TAO Chinese Restaurant Sydney CBD in Sydney

Food is fine, no surprise, service soso, environment ok. $52 for half duck only included six pieces duck on pancakes and two san choy bau. If you care about food taste and value for money, i dont recommend this place.

The environment is ok, the service is ok, but the food is terrible. I never expected half a roast duck ($52), which is six slices of skin duck with a few side dishes + a little minced lettuce. I ordered a plate of spinach and eggs and found three The taste of insects is generally edible and will not make you feel bad again.

Authentic and good. The wasabi prawns that were served with orange slices were so good and a must try. Friend staff. It was quite smoky there but they said its getting fixed

This restaurant is really a big deal. It has been advertised frequently in Xiaohongshu. It has been a long time since I have eaten in a restaurant where not a single dish is delicious. Jinsha tofu has no taste at all. Seafood fried rice has no taste at all. The wasabi and wagyu beef do not taste like each other. The meat of the meat is not as delicious as the green bamboo shoots inside, which is really a bit disgusting. The thick layer of hard burnt skin on the pomelo duck is hard to understand... The pomelo is also the sauce for making pomelo tea. Not a single dish is appetizing, its a torment to eat The service is also hard to describe, the next dish is just called to you by the name of the dish and then thrown on the table Dont be serious!

Disappointed for the taste of food ( very soso, and all friends agreed), I feel i can cook better at home than this. The cooker need to improve their cooking skills and the tastes... wouldnt recommend at all.

What a stunning restaurant! The food is absolutely delicious. We had a few starters that did not disappoint, then mains that were even more impressive. The staff are so friendly. We will definitely be back when we come back to Sydney.

The best Chinese restaurant in the City with beautiful environment!

Went for a very satisfying meal with friends, perfect for a gathering. The environment of the store is also very good, I especially like its glass roof. Recommended dishes: Pineapple Crispy Shandong Chicken, Black Truffle Shrimp Ball Furong Egg, Hong Kong Style Open Stove Sliced Duck (this one is super good, there are sliced duck rolls and Duck fried noodles).

Stone Pot Chicken with Jinsha Vermicelli and Shrimp King, the name is so long hahaha ~ The shrimp is very big and already in its shell, the vermicelli is not too soft and slightly spicy ~ Typhoon Shelter Wagyu beef cubes, the Wagyu beef is very tender and has enough flavor The green beans are also very delicious. Modern Chinese restaurant in CBD. The food was served very quickly. The food was hot and still steaming when they were served. The portion was generous which was quite surprising because usually the portion was relatively small in the modern Chinese restaurant. The fried rice has a lot of seafood but I wish it could be drier. It needs a bit more wok hei (the smoky flavour). Food in general was delicious. I won t say they were very authentic but overall speaking pretty good. In terms of the portion size, the price was acceptable.

We booked a table, but when we arrived it was not the table we wanted. There is no manager or supervisor on site The food tasted mediocre and we had so much left over that we didnt even want to take it home. Totally not worth the price, but the service was very good. Not worth coming back.

Grapefruit Short Ribs 33 The deep-fried short ribs are wrapped in a sweet and sour soup, a great appetizer to go with your meal! Plum Duck 38 We struggled for a long time between grapefruit duck and plum duck, because everyone wanted to eat it! Later, because the grapefruit was given to the ribs, the plum was given to the duck! As soon as it arrived on the table, it was so shiny that it made my eyes shine. I quickly took a photo and checked in and stuffed a big mouthful into my mouth. The duck skin was crispy and it was not greasy at all when paired with the plum sauce. It was super delicious! I even fought with my sisters over duck skin...hahahaha Jie Jie Slider Chicken 29 It was really too ordinary when it came to the table...nothing to eat...Who knew I would shut up as soon as I took my mouthful...The chicken was really smooth and tender, worthy of its name! In the end, it was sold out... Spinach Soup 34 I forgot the full name of this dish. If you like it, you can look at the picture and order it. The only vegetarian dish on the table, it was a big hit! The soup was very sweet and delicious, and I ate all the vegetables and soup. Fried rice with black truffle and scallops 33 It looks ordinary, but it uses a lot of ingredients! The large scallops and shrimps are really made with no mercy and are worth the price of admission! Foie gras teriyaki wagyu cubes 46 In order to eat beef, we gave up tofu. Fortunately, it lived up to expectations. The beef was very tender and the flavor of foie gras could really be tasted. The side dishes, snow peas and mushrooms were also delicious!

We came for a night out for my wife s bday. It was loud, but what can you expect for a bustling dinner on Saturday night. (Mentioning more if you re after a quiet intimate place, this isn t it) There was 17 of us with short notice which was great they could accomodate. We ordered banquet for 8 people and few servings of dumplings, rice and an extra couple dishes for the kids. we got the $68pp banquet (8 people) so we spent $544 on food. There was 6 items on the banquet, of which we got 2 dishes of each. So 8 people sharing 2 plates of each dish. This was slightly ridiculous considering the first dish was 8 spring rolls to which the average cost was $90 we paid for 8 spring rolls yeah We were better just ordering al carte as obviously either the chefs were told not to put any more food or they stuffed up. Initially one plate of food came out to which I spoke up. Not much changed except we got 2 dishes of each.. for 8 people, I was done arguing and tried to just enjoy my night. Everyone was still hungry so we ordered another 2 dishes which we paid for. I understand it s hard to run a business in the city but if logic says we get more food ordering al a carte, then just tell us so. Normally a banquet you leave full with a variety of food. we also got 6 rice bowls for the kids which were tiny and $4 each.. $24 total.. Our bill came to $1000 and they decided to add 10% because we are a big group. So $1100 for people who were still hungry. We have been before but this is our last we will be there. It was a memorable night, both for good company and for the terrible amount of food provided. also no candle or cake for wife s bday. Just missed the mark on many levels (to which over the phone when I booked said would be done) I wish Tao all the best, I hope they survive but also in the future consider the customers when they are paying $544 just for a banquet only for food.

Very standard restaurant cuisine. You can see that each dish is made with precision, and the environment is also good. There was no one there when I went there, so it feels very suitable for an informal business banquet that does not require a private room. Of course, the price is also business-friendly. The price of the banquet The scallion chicken is made with good ingredients, the heat is right, and it s boneless. The beef cubes are useless but they are very comfortable to eat. The rapeseed at the bottom of the tofu can be chopped into finer pieces, the kind suitable for two bites is best. The water was refilled in a timely manner and there was no over-service that made people nervous. This is a good comment. The menu states that there will be an additional 10% service charge for more than 10 people, and 15% for public holidays. In addition, there is a surcharge of about 1.5 for credit card payments.

I booked a table for 4 on a Saturday night when we were visiting Sydney from Port Macquarie. It is always a bit of a worry when you are the one making the choice for a group, particularly when one of those people is not particularly keen on Asian food. However, from the moment we arrived at the door all doubt disappeared. The welcome we got, even though we were early, made us all feel relaxed straight away. This wondeful service continued all night from every member of staff that we had contact with. The food? Well I think it is fair to say that it has spoilt all future Asian meals for me - it was just that good. We had the middle banquet which came with a simply amazing selection of food. Some of the highlights included the vegetable dumplings (the pumpkin one was like eating a sweet custard and could be a dessert), the sweet & sour barramundi and the worlds best fried ice cream balls (no sauce required). We will be back and if this restuarant isnt awarded a Good Food Guide Hat in 2022 then something is wrong.

Booked a table for an early dinner with friends. We went for the banquet as it catered for all and proved to be the most value for money. We had a few dietary requirements; but they were able to cater for us and provide alternatives. The service was great. Manager was personable and engaging. Food flowed and portions were huge! I had a great time catching up with a colleague at Tao. It was a rainy Thursday evening and the place was very busy. We got the steamed pork and chives dumplings; the tempura salt and pepper silver fish; the wok fried soft shell crabs with garlic, chilli, salt and pepper; the fried rice with black truffle, king prawns, scallops and scrambled eggs; and the prawn curry with veggies. All the dishes were delicious. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and warmly lit, just perfect for 2 people or small groups. The ambience was very nice and the service was very friendly and attentive. I had a great time and would recommend this place.

I went for dinner here with my daughter as I was going to see Riverdance afterwards, and they were very attentive. The waittress ordered our dumplings as soon as we told her. Our food came out quickly, and it was tasty.. We had the steamed prawn and chives Har Gau,, deep fried pork chops with Tasmanian honey. Angus beef, and Yang Zhou rice. This gorgeous restaurant has such a nice airy atmosphere. Great venue for any occasion, whether for catch up with friends & family, or dates. Located conveniently near Town Hall/QVB. They have plenty of dumplings & mains on their menu, as well classic dessert like Deep Fried Ice Cream! Their dishes are solid, my faves were Truffle Xiao Long Bao & King Prawn Vermicelli. They have delicious cocktails & mocktails. And super lovely service too.

Haven t written a review in a while but was blown away at how amazing the food was here and one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to in a while ! Ordered dumplings, duck pancakes and Angus beef, noodles and Boneless chicken - everything was well priced, fragrant full of flavour and so fresh Staff was also so lovely will definitely becoming back with a bigger group of people to try more items on the menu

The food was delicious, very much Hong Kong style. I especially liked the duck pancakes. The very dirty synthetic flowers on the table and a dirty wall were off-putting though. I tried to look away as all the dirt was rather nauseating.

We had dumplings, the fish which I really recommend, and the crispy noodles with duck. The serving is quite big. For the mains, one plate can cater to 4 people. Staff were friendly and accomodating. I pass by this restaurant everyday, finally got a chance to have dinner there. We ordered prawn with wasabi, steamed squid dumpling, black angus with black pepper sauce, green bean with xo sauce, fried rice, crispy tofu with salted egg yolk, prawn toast and truffle xio long bao. What i like the most was black angus with black pepper sauce, the meat was so soft also prawn wasabi was nice as well. I wish their tofu with salted egg had more flavour. However everything was nice. I will come back to try more.

Unfortunately I had booked this place to try the truffle lobster efu noodles and that night they said they didnt do it because there were doing a two course lobster special for 6 times the price. Waiters were nice but not attentive. They walk by avoiding eye contact so hard to get attention! Fried rice was delicious though

The food came out fast, but the food was very overpriced and not worth the portions we got. We ordered the pork and chive dumplings and all of our dumplings had raw meat inside, service wasnt the best and our order got mixed up and the workers didnt seem too pleasant when trying to fix the mishap. Near the Grace hotel we were able to get a table as we walked by. Amongst a few restaurants in a row Started with seafood san chow boy. Tasty and filling seafood-on crunchy lettuce. Then to choose from very extensive menu. Modern asian twist. Lamb cutlets and orange roughy fish sweet and sour. Boiled rice. A popular choice of place with youngChinese locals, so had to be good. Its too salty, and the little black flies keep flying when the food is served. After eating half of it, he kept telling us to leave. Never go to Hot Chicken again.

Good Cantonese food in Sydney. The menu is simple to understand and the staff are more than happy to provide recommendations. Reasonable prices and large potions.

Really good food but significantly more expensive than what you might expect (spent ~$110 per person for lunch). Perhaps a special occasion treat rather than a regular Cantonese restaurant option.

It was a little late, but the service staff kept pushing, pushing to order, pushing to check out. I didnt have a good meal. Wagyu beef tastes terrible. Its like a kids steak at the supermarket.

Food is on the pricier side. My friend is vego and we had the steamed vegetarian dimsum platter (6pcs), not amazing, there were some cloves laying around under the dimsum sheets (?) not sure why. Avoid the golden crispy tofu with yellow egg yolk, not worth $32, very bland. Overall experience was very underwhelming.

Dumpling soup tastes like Gom Tang, peppery , gamey and salty. EeFu noodles were overcooked, 3/5 at most . Saving grace was nice Pu-Er. Not a 4.5 restaurant!

The food is so delicious and unique. Love the diamonds clams dish. The wasabi king prawns was equally very good. The waitress was so polite and extremely friendly. It s great to see a modern Chinese doing well in Sydney and we had a pleasant experience. The decor is nice but the atmosphere was chaotic. Seats are tightly packed and diners were sitting too close to the next table. The food was nice but the flavours wasn t really hitting the spot. The Salt & Pepper Prawn & Squid and the Dried Tossed Green Beans with XO Sauce were fine. As with the Crispy Skin Shandong Chicken with Pineapple, we thought it was interesting when we ordered, but the execution was a miss the pineapple did not go well with the black vinegar and added heavy handed sweetness to the dish. We much prefer the original ginger and shallots version. The service was friendly and nice from the lady who served us but wasn t from the one greeting us at the door. Definitely worth a try but I hope they improve in time.

This is my first time leaving a review for a restaurant after I lived in Sydney for 7 years. Before my birthday, I was searching for a restaurant with private rooms and contacted Tao and other restaurants. And TAO assured me they had private rooms available,100%, which I double checked. However, upon arrival, we were seated in the noisy central area, and looks like the only private rooms were given to other customers without prior notice to me .. Despite this setback, the quality of the dishes was decent. However, the loud atmosphere prevented us from enjoying a leisurely meal, and we couldnt even hear each other speak. We had planned to order drinks before came but ended up quickly finishing our meal and moving elsewhere to continued for celebrate and cut the cake. Considering the price point of around $80+ per person (excluding drinks) after discount, I would prefer going to Braza or YX, where the service staff does not casually hand over plates and are responsive when my friend repeatedly raised their hand for a minute and called for assistance but was ignored. In summary, I hope the restaurant can at least inform their customers in advance if they are unable to provide the requested service. When youre in the ct of SYD on a Sunday evening, its difficult to make a big group alternative reservations, right?and it feels like being cornered into accepting the only option available. I appreciate the quality of the food, even though Im thanks for the 10% discount, but what can I say on this birthday s evening .. Regards,

Very unsatisfied with my experience at this restaurant, where the only positive i can say is that my hunger was satiated by the end of it. When we were eventually seated, we were prompted by the server for any drinks, in which it never arrived even after multiple dishes had come through. This was only the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of more problems that we faced. I ordered the Wasabi Wagyu Beef, and when it arrived it look starkly different to what was expected from the photos ive seen, i was certain that i received a completely different dish instead. I asked the waitress about it and she was extremely adamant that it was absolutely the dish i ordered, which turned out to be a blatant lie, as after receiving a second opinion from a different waiter, they confirm med that it was not the dish i ordered, and apologised for the mistake. They took the dish away, 5 minutes pass by, and they bring out the presumable dish that i had initially ordered. It looked as if the contents of the first dish was simply recooked, then topped with fancy-looking asparagus to hide whatever malice it had. It was like adding a gorgeously umami-rich piece of A5 wagyu between two 1.5cm slices of homebrand bread, except the food here was nothing more than average. It felt like a half done job, and at this point, my experience was already ruined and left a taste of disdain in my mouth. A very unfortunate first experience as I was very much looking forward to dining here. The service ive received here makes fast food workers look like saints

Great food, however it can be a little slow coming out but if youre patient its worth it.

Initially thought this place would be more of a western take of Cantonese cuisines, but evidently not. The dishes are authentic and very tasty and approved by my cantonese friends. The menu offers a good variety of meat, seafood and vegetarian selections, which showcases some of the most iconic cantonese dishes. The plum duck is a must-try, really rich in flavour and roasted to perfection, the plum sauce uplifted the taste to next level. The wagyu beef with black truffle, pumpkin and wild mushroom is also one of our favourites. And of course, the fried rice would never be a disappointment and merits a visit alone. Serving portion is quite generous and good for sharing, very friendly owner and staff. Great place for family or friends gathering overall. There are about six vegetarian dishes, and I highly recommend Baby Spinach for its ultra smooth, silky texture. Staff are friendly with great atmosphere. Close to QVB. Booking recommended.

Terrible experience. We arrived for dinner late (before 22pm) because according to Google they close at 11pm. However, in less than 10 minutes, they brought us the bill. Five minutes later they asked us while we were having dinner if we wanted the food to go!!! We were not told at any time that we would have to have dinner and leave the restaurant in 20 minutes. Disappointing

Responsive service. However I m very unsatisfied with the pricing and the food quality. We got charged 10 dollars for still water, steamed fish fillet was not fresh, beef had no flavour besides peppercorns.

The place is clean, the ingredients are good and the taste isnt strong. Average but delicious and quality Melt-in-your-mouth pork belly The stir-fried meat is very soft and delicious. Shrimp cream sauce was well seasoned. Not too sweet, enjoyable to eat, firm and fresh shrimp, fragrant pan-fried rice that is crumbly in the style of Chinese fried rice. The food portion is not very big. Contemporary decoration shop There are Thai employees. Reservations are required.

Excellent Cantonese Cuisine in the heart of Sydney CBD. I ordered the Pot stickers and the three cup chicken hot pot. The pot stickers were excellent- freshly cooked, crunchy base, and juicy. The hot pot was also very tasty. The service was fast polite and attentive. Would definitely come again.

Food was delicious, but you have to put up with the wait staff who got the nerve kept asking are you ready to order 3 times in 15 mins even though we have told her we are still waiting for a friend to join us. Very pushy.....

I had a wonderful experience at Tao Restaurant. The service was incredibly welcoming, and the food was truly outstanding. Im definitely planning to visit again soon!

Were a family of four with two children and have stumbled upon Tao when a nearby restaurant we booked for dinner messed up our reservation. We went to Tao without a booking and the lady was kind enough to accommodate us on one of the reserved tables with the condition of finishing our dinner within an hour, we were happy to accept. The food is good and authentic. Service tip top and price reasonable. It has a lovely ambience although it gets a bit noisy when the crowd gets in but overall we enjoyed our dinner and felt truly welcomed there.

We got the banquet and the food was ok but the serving size was small for the high prices we paid. I suggest be a little more generous in your servings as it wont cost you that much to increase the portions. You charge like a fine dining restaurant but the experience is far from it.

I have great experience in this restaurant. The decor inside is pretty cool with some tradition Chinese characters and poetry hanging on the wall. The foods are delicious. Ordered the Jade Tofu, Wagyu beef, seafood fried rice and fish maw soup, they are all well cooked. The service is excellent and manager is regularly checking in to gather feedback and engage with you. Will definitely come back again!

The place is clean and the foods were nice, one of my favourite dishes is Australian Wagyu Beef, Braised Foie Gras Paste . They also offered a fortune cookie after your meal, very cute.

Really loved this Cantonese/Asian fusion style restaurant with lovely decor and very pleasant staff. We had a very early dinner but they were quite busy by the time we left. All of our chosen dishes were delicious especially the pork belly, tofu eggplant, wood ears with chilled cucumber. Amazing flavours. The perch with ginger and shallot is a dish I often order at similar style restaurants and I found the fish a little tough and not quite as good as I have had before. Nevertheless I highly recommend this restaurant for a delightful and tasty meal with lots of interesting and fresh flavours. 4.6 Returned to this restaurant with my running buddy the evening of the Sydney marathon and we were not disappointed. The eggplant starter was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed our scallops with fois gras and mushrooms and scallops with peas and asparagus. Deliciously tasty and healthy. The staff were very attentive and friendly. I will definitely return yet again.

Nice food, wonderful service and options

I see on Google Map that it closes at 9:30, but why did the waiters start mopping the floor and moving tables in advance at 8:40? It took about 20 minutes after we came in to dine, and not long after the food was served, the waiters had already started cleaning up and moving the tables around. The harsh sound makes it difficult to hear clearly when chatting with friends, which makes the experience unpleasant.

Went there for dinner time as walk ins to try and got a table and was greeted by our waiter Betty right away and explained the menu to us. She was excellent at looking after us the whole time through our dinner. There are plenty of varieties of dishes and each dish we had was absolutely delicious. We had the Xiao long bao, Seafood san choy bao and mains king Prawn Wasabi, Black Truffle Wagyu Beef, and Yan Zhou fr. Highly recommend will be returning to Tao. The worst service ever!

You cant force me to tip, nor can you hint at it. Why should I pay extra after already paying for my meal? The food in your restaurant isnt as good as a regular place like Eastwood, and it seems like youre just trying to scam foreigners. The ambiance is average and not upscale, and its noisy. Using the restroom is very difficult. I dislike the fake good service just for tips.

Wonderful food with nice staff! Especially like their spice is mild for every food, perfect for my taste :) Definitely worth visit If you are tired of the strong Australian food that Koreans eat, this is a place I highly recommend! Enjoy the Xiaolongbao seafood fried rice, rich sweet and sour pork, and shrimp wontons! There is also chili sauce to complement the spiciness!

I feel that this place is horrible. When we just finished our dish and still drinking water and chatting, we were pushed to leave. I booked a table for 4 from 6:30pm, and were pushed to leave at around 7:10pm, less than 45mins minutes and the staff told me other people have reservation. I never knew any restaurant can limit guests eating time within 45 minutes very rude service and dishes are pricey.

This is a modern but yet traditional Cantonese restaurant in its cooking and taste. I ordered two dishes, Yang Zhou Fried Rice and Roast Duck Pan Cake cum Pao Cai Bao. Both dishes are tasty and not too oily and not salty, it is very Cantonese cook style. Definitely a place to visit when you are in Sydney.

Such a nice restaurant with pretty decoration. We ordered the truffle tofu, the Peking duck(with fried noodle) and sweet and sour pork. I would say all of them are tasty with good portion. Last but not least, the service is very good. Highly recommend!

It was really terrible. I have never had such a terrible meal. The fish roe fried rice was bland and tasted like rice. The meat of the beef foie gras tasted very stale! I don t know where such high ratings come from. Not to mention the taste of wine, it has nothing to do with drinking.

It is said that it has been soaked in cumin and black pepper and marinated for a year. It has a disgusting taste. The chef does not know what he added to the dish. Logically speaking, it has a umami taste. But if the fish maw is missing, it will not taste like boiled water. It would be more appropriate to change the name to yellow pimple soup. actual.

We came with a group of 16. We ordered $88 set, not worth it at all. We had been waiting for an hour for the first dish. The foods are too salty, the foods are not enough! Also, the quality of the service was very bad! We will not coming back again and highly NOT recommended!! Very bad experience!

Its so hard to eat. All the dishes have the same taste... Theres no level of taste. Its like the kind of fast food where seasoning packets are poured in and cooked... I really dont understand how you dare to pay this price. First of all, the shrimps cooked in the vermicelli pot are quick-frozen shrimps and not fresh. I won t talk about this, but the tofu is actually not tender at all. The outer layer of skin ruins the tender texture. And the beef cubes have the texture of beef with a lot of cornstarch added... Is this price reasonable for this level? What is it? How much money do you need for publicity? Please use this money to hire some good chefs. The restaurant is also very small and the environment is just like that. The most fatal thing is that there is a smell coming from nowhere... It feels like the floor has not been mopped, and the smell comes in waves. I am speechless. I will not come here again or recommend it. The food really needs a lot of improvement

Terrible service, almost had drinks spilled on us two times. They did not charge us the price on the menu for our drinks and instead charged us more. When we asked about it they did not subtract any money from our bill. For only three dishes and three drinks it felt overpriced.
