Sharing traditional flavours of Indonesia to the world through Nasi Bungkus Original Warteg by Garam Merica Sydney
The menu is huge and a little bit confusing. Ultimately grateful for all the great choice. I chose the nasi bungkus with tempe orek, tempe kering, sayur nangka, and empal goreng (the names were slightly different, and those four items are from a nice long list of choices). All were quite good but I thought the flavor levels were just under what you might get elsewhere (bumbunya kurang, tapi pedasnya tepat). Partner ordered mie ayam and soto betawi, and we shared a tempe penyet. His dishes were good, and the tempe penyet, I thought, was missing something. Just a very basic presentation with less flavor. If I go back I’m keen to try the rawon and much else besides but we couldn’t order everything!
I visited three times. The second time was when the restaurant is full, and server on the register isn't providing a hospitable service at all. The taste is flavourful. However, the portion is very much controlled, and price is significantly higher than 10 other Indonesian resraurants in the vicinity. Ambience is great, but we needed to clean our own tables and ask for napkins and drinking cups after purchasing a meal and a drink.
It's hidden, and it's literally housed outside a Church yet that doesn't diminish the food that comes out of the kitchen. Puffed tofu, that's crisped up, not greasy with a nice chilli infused sauce. The mi goreng is delivers on the flavour. I also feasted in the nasi bungkus. With the bungkus you can select the proteins and vegetables. I decided on the beef rendang with 3 vegetable selections. The rendang was flaking apart and amazing. The sambal spicy, and the rice perfectly cooked. To wash down the meal, I had an exquisite cendol that really transported to the Malay archipelago. Definitely will be returning to sample more of their extensive menu. One of the best Indonesian meals I have had in Sydney.
Best indo food I’ve had in Sydney! The smashed chicken was delicious, but wow so spicy! They give you water in tiny disposable shots cups so definitely buy a drink. I’ll definitely be back~
Everything is excellent for a local/street food style Indonesian/Malayan restaurant. A wide range of menu options, great taste, quality, and volume at a good price. There are lots of seats and a self-serve style.
The owner is soo enthu about cooking and serving Indonesian food. He wants to put Nasi Bungkus on the global map - “when you think of Indonesian cuisine, you should think Nasi Bungkus”. And in my books he has, I soo loved Nasi Bungkus, we are going back again to try a different combo. Special mention, the black sambal is soo goood 🤤. Warning, the Ayam Geprek (Smashed Spicy Chicken) is very hot! If you are planning to eat, get some sweet drink or dessert or water, you are gonna need it 🔥
I will only eat here in the city now! This is the best, most flavourful food I have had. Wow, just wow. The owners and staff are wonderful too. Only 1 recommendation, I think some ice cream with the banana fritters would take it to the next level. Also help cool the mouth for those of us who don’t do spicy too often! Haha
Recommended by a friend, visted here on my few weeks to Sydney. The food was excellent and portion was huge! The decor and soft songs played gave the place a very peaceful and enjoyable vibe. Kept coming back every week. Highly recommended if you enjoy Indonesian cuisine!
The gado2 is so delicious, I miss my hometown
First time going to this place and it turns out the food is really delicious... it feels like eating in Indonesia... if I go to Sydney again I will definitely stop by here again... the best!
really good food, so authentic
highly recommended so yummy! Kid-friendliness: stroller friendly Food : 5/5 |

Best wrapped rice in town
Authentic Indonesian restaurant with cozy atmosphere, good price to value. Recommended Definitely comeback for another meal Food : 3/5
Try Nasi Rawon and Nasi Padang, both are delicious and fresh, the place is comfortable and clean.
Enaaaak... it all tastes great, I tried chicken noodles, rice wrap and grilled ribs...
delicious! love the iga penyet so much, the staff and owners are so friendly we will back for sure,.
We were discriminated against here. The person next to us ordered later than us but was already eating and we were still waiting. After waiting for a long time, we complained to the counter. They laughed at us and told us to take our food. It was a really humiliating experience. It ruined my day.
Good food , recommended
good food! good service!
Food was amazing and recommended!!
Authentic indonesian food and the vibe is good.
Great place and delicious halal food!
The menu is all Indonesian. Suitable for those who miss Indonesia
The food is really delicious, Indonesian, really if you want to eat Indonesian food here Vegetarian options: There are lots of veggie options Kid-friendliness: There is a baby chair
Garam Merica is a hidden gem. The food is delicious, the portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable. It s worth a visit if you want to try something different in Sydney.
Good foods and cheap
best indonesian ive had in sydney. delightful. solid vegetarian options. chillis have decent spice.
I love coming here for the nasi bungkus. Conveniently just few minutes walk from town hall station. One of my go to place for Indo food in Sydney cbd
Ordered through Uber Eats. Tiny portion! I paid almost $30 for this? (Photo with receipt for size comparison) I know several other very generous Indo places with tastier food. First and last time ordering from here.
We drive 6 hours just to eat here Its taste good
Amazing rice wrap as always!
I ve been here a few times and the food is always great! I love getting the nasi bungkus as I get to pick my own dishes.
Love the food! So authentic and nostalgic!! Really want to try the indomie geprek next! Food
Yummy authentic food. Wish the portions were bigger for the price.
Love the rawon, really get the Indonesian vibes!!!
I thought I wouldnt find duck rice as delicious as this in Sydney, it turns out my suspicions were refuted by this. Thank you Salt and Pepper Sydney for bringing you this delicious dish.
Delicious, flavourful, authentic Indonesian cuisine. Highly recommend the Nasi bungkus (beef rendang, eggplant, potato, beef tendon) and the Iga Penyet - grilled option (smashed beef ribs with sambal).
Not a great place to sit as most of the tables are extremely dirty and sticky. But the food is fantastic! Tried Mee goreng, Nasi goreng java, smashed chicken and the banana leaf item (with chicken curry, beef rendang and omelette). All tasted amazing. Will definitely go again but might do a takeaway instead.
Its so delicious that I forget its in Sydney, AUTHENTIC TO THE MAX
A lot of choices to choose from. I d recommend Nasi Bungkus. Friendly staff with great service. The place is tidy as well
Great food, business ran by stingy owners. Went to get the two meats and a veg option, only to be told after waiting in line that apparently there is an unwritten rule about not allowing two beef options. Asked for extra sambal when I got about a teaspoons worth, only to be told itll cost more for another teaspoons worth. The servers got the order wrong, and their penny pinching means they scooped out the incorrect component, then placed it in a take away container. I wonder where it all goes later on. Guests are expected to put rubbish away themselves; which is fine. This was just after rush hour, none of the table were clean, and the bins were full. I got dirty looks and remarks when I aggregated other peoples garbage to clear out a table for myself. Was hoping third time lucky, but unfortunately great food alone just isnt going to do it for me. Great food, over priced, no service, not going back again.
Exceptional
The foods are sooo yummy, my fav is Ketoprak!
Uenakkk pol, recommended!
The food was great and delish! Bumbunya medhok!, :D Food
Lovely Dinner, very caring staff!
Good traditional Indo street food. Delicious and good value for money.
Nasi Kapau was very good! Vegetarian options: Plenty of vegetarian options Food : 5/5 |
I will come back. Delicious food
Very relaxing atmosphere, cozy vibe. Food was excellent and exceeded expectations. Staff was nice and respectful. The food is very delicious, please come and eat a lot. . :)
Nice atmosphere, good food and considerate staffs.
Garam Mercia was an unexpected surprise. It was hard to find the store but more than worth it. The food reminds me so much of Indonesia, the place is large and the vibes are nice. The nasi goreng is a great option for newcomers to the Indo cuisine. I tried gado gado and it was nice. People there were welcoming and sweet
nice service n food
The legendary duck is good, but the Madura duck is still my favorite
Yummy
The place is nice but there is rubbish everywhere. 1 person in charge there was very bad customer service, VERY RUDE, his face was bitchy. WE BUY NOT EAT FOR FREE. The food is also not delicious, the Soto Betawi is very salty, the fried noodles have no taste, the chili sauce is bitter. Wont be back again. There was very little rice and side dishes, nothing tasted good.
Delicious dishis, comfortable places
It tastes delicious, fits on the tongue. Great
amazing nasi warteg ever better than cheep field! tried the telor balado, rendang, lodeh, everything was so good
Would not recommend this restaurant after the experience I had today. Overall the food was poor but the main issue was how myself and my friendship group of close to 20 were treated at the restaurant. The lady who was in charge today was completely unprofessional and had a poor attitude when she wasn t willing to accomodate our requests. We had a prior conversation with the owner of the restaurant via Whatsapp who gave us permission to bring our birthday cake to have after lunch. Then at the restaurant, we weren t allowed to have the cake until a per person fee was paid. This was not communicated by the owner in the prior conversations and if this was advised beforehand, we wouldn t have gone ahead with the reservation. It was handle very poorly and the communication was also very bad. Please be aware if choosing to eat at this restaurant as it had left myself and my friends very disappointed.
Lots of various Indo menus, super delicious and make you miss your hometown...
Best indo food in sydney!!
Amazing food! Always love it!
One of the best Indonesian food in Sydney! Definitely worth the try.
The portions are now small... from those who often eat there... and the black sticky rice dessert is too small, not half the size of the container.
Authentic Indonesian food with incredible flavors. Highly recommended! Kid-friendliness: They have kids menu Food : 5/5 |
The fried rice is delicious & the portion is really big. The fried duck is delicious, the sauce is delicious

Food its good, but the staff is so rude and not in patient to handle customers!! All my friends said the same things! Please do it better for the staff to get more patient and be kind to customers!!!

Great
Perfect place for casual or even special occasion dinings Vegetarian options: Many vegs options as well Food : 5/5 |

Delicious food and comfortable atmosphere, very good service
Great food and atmosphere. Authentic Indonesian food. Will come back again Food : 5/5
Enjoyable authentic Indonesian food. Enjoyed visiting
Had lunch here with a few workmates. The food was good and servings are sufficient. I like the fact that there is no loud background music so we had some good chats while enjoying our meals. We had Nasi Goreng Mawut and Satay Chicken to name a few of the food we ordered.
Super recommended
very delicious
Very nice and good
Very delicious
Discovered a little gem for Indo food in the city located within the Wesley Mission building near Townhall station. Good selection of Indo dishes on offer. Food is tasty. Peaceful and clean surroundings and very friendly staff. Will be back again.
Best servicess
Generous food portion & spacious, clean place.

We ducked into Garam Merica for lunch on a recommendation from a friend, and we werent disappointed! Delicious food and excellent friendly service, would definitely come again! Five stars :)
Excellent service with a combined delicious food and a friendly environment especially the lovely owner.
Ordered the famous rice wrap and fish in sour sauce. The taste doesnt disappoint
Mie ayam is very delicious
In short: Avoid this place at all costs if you only have 30 mins time to spare. Overrated, Slow service, Filthy wooden tables, Not cheap eats, Inconsistent food Long review: Service is outrageously slow. I visited the place after the lunch time peak hours around 2:30PM on Saturday. The restaurant is not even half full, yet I waited for more than 10 minutes just to get my order taken, and another 10 for the food to arrive. That is way too long for just 1 order of nasi bungkus where the server can just grab the meats from the ready to serve trays. The restaurant is severely understaffed, there is only 1 person to both act as a cashier and and as a server for the entire place. The worst part, if you need tissues or the paper glass for the self serve tap water, you have to ask the cashier. Imagine having to wait another 10 mins for that. The tables, particularly the wooden ones are filthy, it is sticky and you can even clearly see the food leftovers and the dirt stick and become part of the table. The only thing that is saving this place is the food, the portion is okay, the taste is also okay, but not consistent. Some of the beef rendang I ate is tender and taste good, but some others are hard and dry as a rock. Now, when it comes to the price, this place is not cheap as well. Comparing the price of nasi bungkus and 4 choices elsewhere, the nasi bungkus here is more expensive than the majority of 4 choices elsewhere. Overall, this restaurant is so overrated.
Would recommend ot!
Amazing food, service, and very nice atmosphere. One of the best Indo resto in Sydney
Peak food

Lovely food, good service, friendly staff - a good place for good Indonesian food! I highly recommend getting the beef rendang and corn fritters here, it s addicting. Vegetarian options: They have a wide option for vegetarians - really good as well :)

This is my first time eating Indonesian food in Sydney, it s a great experience! ! It tastes delicious! . Chinese people don t lie to Chinese people!
first time trying indonesian food it was really good and yummy! will come again
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Indonesia Restau in Sydney, and it was a fantastic experience! The restaurant offers a wide variety of authentic Indonesian dishes, each packed with rich flavors and traditional spices that instantly transport you to Indonesia. The menu features classics like Nasi Goreng, Rendang, and Gado-Gado, all prepared with high-quality ingredients and a perfect balance of taste. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with décor that gives a cozy yet vibrant Indonesian vibe. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready to offer recommendations and ensure we were well taken care of throughout the meal.

Best Nasi Bungkus ever. I feel like Im taken to my hometown, Bandung.
very friendly n nice staff, good location n good food as well. recommended!
Very nice restaurant, good food and clean
Very good authentic Indonesian food. I would recommend the nasi wrap. Very delicious!!
Good Food, always remind me of hometown flavour
Really good food, and the people working here are friendly as well!
Yum!
Food was exceptional! Staff was also really warm and welcoming.
$20 for 4 choices of food is not worth it because of the portion size is so little. and the most ridiculous thing is that $5 just for hot tea with no sugar and when I wanted to ask just for hot water to refill, they said that it would be $2 per refill. How could you charge $2 just for hot water??? Very disappointing, never ever again will I come back. Not worth of the money at all as the food quality is standard and the service is very poor. what a waste of time and money.
Very delicious
Good food.
good service
Recommended Indonesian Food!
Lovely service, good food, authentic indonesian cuisine Dietary restrictions: Has halal option Wheelchair accessibility: Have good space for people with wheelchair
We decided to try this place see the reviews and we re not disappointed. We order the 2 veg 2 meat combo in banana leaf. I ordered the green jackfruit and stewed squid and was blown away away by the flavour.. I wish I could order more but the portion was quite good. We be back!!
Amazing, not a single food is waisted
Sorry in advance, but Im very disappointed today because the rawon pincuk tastes like it lacks taste (bland) and my husbands seafood fried rice is also bitter, maybe too burnt and also lacks taste (bland), like its not seasoned enough. Theres really no feeling. Delicious rissoles. Even though I was enthusiastic about going to town to eat at Garam Merica, it turned out to be very disappointing. The price really doesnt match the quality and reviews. Super disappointed.
One of the best indo cuisine in CBD :)
Very good food, fast and friendly service, polite staff. Would recommend for sure! But what I didnt appreciate is the option of paying with cash - only the owner operates the cash register, which means when they are not around (which is quite often), we are forced to pay with our cards which incurs a surcharge. As customers, we should have the freedom to choose our means of payment. Dietary restrictions: Good variety of options available.
A very friendly Vivian helped us with what to order. We got a vegetarian nasi bungkus, ayam penyat (smashed chicken) and es cendol drink. We loved the flavours. Would definitely come back again. Food : 5/5
Super good place to have Indonesian food Vegetarian options: There are interesting vegetarian options
best padang rice in town

Food was good. I always regular customer in this place.
Amazing food and customer service. Thank you :) Kid-friendliness: great and friendly staff. Thanks :) Food : 5/5 |
first of all ... the tables were sticky.. yes it was confusing with the menus... I picked the nasi bungkus, a little disappointed. cause I didnt get my selected dishes. seriously the value of a Bangkus can get better value at other places. Nasi bungkus in Indonesia is a humble dish for the main stream .
Loved the bungkus. My friend had the Nasi goreng Jawa. Very authentic, service was quick.
The food was goooood
