Kuro Bar & Dining in Sydney

Excellent food and the staff are wonderful. The tantan noodles, Kuro fried chicken, kingfish tartare, snapper and ocean trout ceviche and wagyu were really special. Everything on the set menu came together to create a memorable experience on my wife s birthday.

We had reached the restaurant well before the closing time but the hostess seemed reluctant to seat us. She went in and spoke to someone and only then did she allow us in. The starter of Wagyu Tataki/ Black Garlic/ Egg Jam/ Chives was tender and excellent. Our main of Dry House Aged Duck Breast/ Cacao Red Wine Sauce/ Quince was also superb. The desserts were a let down. They seemed confused. Too many elements on the plate that didnt seem cohesive. We had Pomelo/ Yoghurt Sorbet/ Lemon Curd/ Green Tea Shiso Jelly and Mango Espuma/ Hojicha Granita/ Passion Fruit/ Chocolate Sorbet. All in all it was an excellent meal.

Have only been here for the kakigori week when they have a special guest from Japan. The kakigori on its own is quite filling for one person and is very tasty. Will definitely come back next time they have kakigori week. Food

Ive been visiting Kuro on and off for many years now and this restaurant has always and consistently deliver quality Japanese food at reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

We visited this restaurant to celebrate a friends birthday, and while the atmosphere was lovely with its modern design and great lighting, that s where the positives end. Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment. We left feeling that we could have had a much better experience at any other Japanese restaurant, and for a fraction of the price. The raw fish (possibly bonito) had a noticeably fishy taste and odour and was too chewy to enjoy. The raw scallops were served lukewarm, which made them unappetising, and no one in our group could take a second bite. As for the rest of the dishes, they were mediocre at best nothing memorable. To top it off, the service was below average. It took a long time for them to bring our drinks, clear away plates, and remove empty glasses. When we voiced our concerns, the staff appeared indifferent, which left us feeling frustrated and unheard. Overall, it was not a great dining experience, and I would not recommend this place.

This place is amazing. Kyoka, who we miss already, and Yokai are some of the best mixologists Ive ever seen in my travels. The staff are friendly and super good at what they do!

The beef was too rare snd very fat. Too very long for the dishes to be served and some of the staff members are not fluent in English, it was hard communicating to them. Doesnt t ask for allergies or anything as well.

Had lunch here with the set meal, halfway into the meal they moved my table to a benchtop table so they could make room for another customer even after we booked a time. Ive felt so much shame and regret going to fine dining restaurants after that. Food was decent but I just felt so much shame after that. Its fine if they moved us before the meal but we were mid meal and made a booking.

I haven t had food that impressed me for a long long time! Well done Kuro! Chef Taka San is really showing his passion about food by using his creativity to make something ordinary extraordinary. Kuro in Japanese means Black , so don t be surprised your dish or food are serviced in full black colour and you will be more surprised what is inside taste like. The Kuro Black fried chicken has thin and crispy black batter outside and super tender and juicy chicken (breast maybe) inside, along with Ume (plum) Jam and bonito. It really showed the chef s work on a normal ingredients. XO Soba was nothing near any soba I ever had . Moist, creamy, al Dente are the words. Top with crab meat and thinly cut spring onion. Combinations of Japanese noodle and western cooking with modern twist. Amazing! Miso marinated (guessed)barramundi with balsamic vinegar, burnt lime and olive oil. Fish is so flavoursome but not losing texture after cooking. Balance of sweet sour and umami! I am a picky fish lover and I enjoy it very much. It is really second to none. And it is Kuro black . ;) Their cocktails are highly recommended! Try to count how many types old fashion they have, you will know it should at least be the world class level bar, no kidding! Crystal like Ice block are hand crafted to art piece. There are more amazing bit and piece other than what is mentioned above. Wait for you to discover while you visit.

Very Average to be honest , menu was not explained and if it was we would have ordered different mains. Most of the plates needed more pop of flavour and the last serving of dessert the caramel was so bitter and burnt . The waitresses were very polite and welcoming .

Ive always wanted to go to this restaurant but never did until now~ I pre-ordered a bottle of AGRAPART & Fils Blanc de Blancs. It wasnt chilled, but with Sydneys weather now, it was quite nice at room temperature. However, the bitterness was a bit amplified, which adjusted as it cooled down over time. Freshly opened oysters with green sauce - indeed very fresh. Caviar with crisps - delicious. Kagoshima Sirloin - impressively done, the fat paired with a sweet and sour taste, yet not greasy at all. Japanese Wagyu is best cooked by the Japanese. I love the tuna tartare styled like beetroot in the picture. Its fresh and elegant taste paired perfectly with the Champagne, instantly releasing fruity aromas. The Wagyu tartare was also very good, though it didnt pair as well with my Champagne. Wine Review: Agrapart & Fils Grand Cru Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut NV Aroma: Crisp green apple, a refreshing bite. Initially, without chilling, at Sydney s room temperature, the yeast flavor was prominent, with notes of baking, biscuits, and toasted bread. The lees character was strong. Taste: Not too acidic, with a well-balanced structure, featuring concentrated flavors of orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, and yeast. The bubbles danced on the tongue with orange peel, followed by roasted cashew, rice, and fresh pomelo. As it warmed, the body became less pronounced. The lees extended into a linear finish, with the fruit aromas less distinct. When not chilled enough, there was a slight bitterness akin to grape skins, but this normalized after a bit of chilling. I think its a very well-made Blanc de Blancs, with half of the wine aged in barrels. Paired with the beetroot-style tuna tartare pictured, it brought out the wines fruit and floral notes, with pear and peach puree.

Kuro s cocktail omakase left a deep impression on me, especially the creativity of using Australian native ingredients to create Japanese flavors. I particularly loved the spring themed cocktail. When the bartender started preparing it in front of me, the aroma immediately took me back to Japan during the sakura season.

came for happy hour enjoyed the: old fashioned (good value) - a small but heavyweight cocktail #like a nugget strawberry fields - champagne with strawberry sorbet dessert cocktail update: finally tried the hyped lunch menu standouts were the: daily sashimi - appreciated the bonito with the pickled and enoki & found the kingfish with and black delish (smoky flavour ) mentaiko udon - rich creamy and umami (small portion more than enough) aged duck - very tender, perfect amount of chew not a fan of the tempura batter (on the heavy side) but thats a personal preference wished the Hokkaido scallops werent tempura-ed as well #a sashimi fan

Came here for a birthday lunch with my wife. Had the $65 set menu. The food was amazing. We must of said Yum! Out loud 15 times each. Would definitely recommend to others. Kid-friendliness: The restaurant slightly altered some of the dish for our 4 year old daughter. Seared the raw scollops which was a nice unexpected touch to our lunch time dinning experience.

We dinned recently for a friends birthday. Great wine selection! We enjoyed various white wines by the glass then we had a wonderful bottle of Folium Pinot Noir. The set menu for $100 per person offered terrific value and exceptional quality. I cant recommend Kuro Bar and Dining enough!! We will be back, thanks Team.

Delicious feast of the body and soul

Reservation made in the morning for dinner at 7:30 p.m. Beautiful room with open kitchen, tables sufficiently spaced to preserve customer privacy and pleasant lighting. We choose two menus at A$100 and wine by the glass: Chardonnay for the aperitif and the fish dishes and Shiraz for the duck. The dishes follow one another with an admirable presentation of the dishes which are, each time, of great inventiveness and exquisite flavors. Refined appetizer, Kingfish sashimi, Tomatoes, feta and ginger, White miso laksa, Trout, caramelized fennel and clam sauce and Rosé duck breast, figs and blackcurrants delight our palates. And for dessert, a delight: caramelized banana with dark chocolate. Smiling welcome, very professional service and attentive chef. A perfect dinner.

This restaurant made my boyfriend birthday absolutely unforgettable! I opted for the set dinner menu, and it was an incredible deal. Every course was fantastic, but the raw fish dishes truly stole the show. The freshness was undeniable, and the taste was simply divine. The oysters deserve a special mention - they were absolutely super delicious! Fresh, plump, and with a perfect briny taste. The staff were exceptional throughout the evening. Id mentioned in my reservation email that I wanted a special message written on the dessert plate, and they went above and beyond. It was a delightful touch that made the night even more special. Speaking of the dessert, it was wonderful, but the true star of the main course was the beef. It was so incredibly flavorful and cooked to absolute perfection. I honestly couldnt believe I only ordered one serving - it was that good! This entire experience was the best birthday celebration I could have wished for. The combination of incredible food, fresh ingredients, and friendly, attentive service made it a night to remember. I cant wait to go back and try more from their menu!

A friend recommended this restaurant, and I tried their Set Menu. It exceeded my expectations, especially the various sashimi dishes, which were incredibly delightful! Definitely deserving of a five-star rating. If I were to suggest anything, I believe improving the lighting would enhance the overall experience even further!

We came here because one of our friend recommended. And the food really surprised us. We went for a 100set menu. The sashimi is fresh and tasted great. Actually every dish is wonderful. The service also are great. They always filled up the cup when needed. We got a beautiful night at Kuro. I definitely recommend this restaurant and would come back again.

Excellent food

Cant fault the food, lighting was to be commended, staff were attentive too. Pacing of dishes could be improved upon, I think we waited for the duck pies for over 30min. The bell calls from the kitchen were also somewhat disruptive, especially every call was a double ding, which I personally felt were unnecessary.

So, I may have a new favourite restaurant in Sydney. Everything about Kuro was wonderful; the food, the service and the atmosphere. We dined for lunch, and had the $100 set menu, with the $40 add-on for A5 wagyu. An absolute steal for the price, and even the $45 menu looked lovely (but hey, we were celebrating). Every dish was excellent, but there were two stand-outs. The beetroot tuna was not only visually stunning, but had a wonderful balance of both flavours and textures - we felt honoured to be among the first to be served it, and I am sure it will be a favourite. But when I thought that could not be topped, the decadence of the A5 wagyu coated our mouths, and was perfectly paired with wasabi. Two dishes I will dream about for a while. The service was both appropriately professional for a restaurant of its quality, but refreshingly friendly at the same time. The staff were attentive to us, warm in demeanour, and explained every dish well, and it was clear they were invested in making our dining experience the best it could be. And a final note, the atmosphere was beautiful. The historical architecture has been made into something special with the lighting and design choices, and small touches like the kintsugi on some of the tableware only elevated an already exceptional experience. A big thank you to the team at Kuro for such a special way to celebrate our anniversary.

The best service, in traditional Jap style. The food was delicious and well priced, the cocktails as well (I had the Yuzu sour) and the sake our waiter recommended was so easy to drink, nothing like other sakes I had in the past. We will be back!

Disappointing dishes. Flavours were disjointed and bland. $42 for a plate of rice with a bit of ikura and foam is a bit too much, in my opinion.

Not sure if the standard has gone down but I left disappointed. The quality of the food was high however I found some of the dishes heavy, needing something fresh. The steak was also unevenly cooked. One plate was medium whilst anothers was borderline blue. Maybe a la carte is better than the set menu. The cocktails however were 5/5, definitely the best thing from the night.

Have been to this restaurant a few times now. Most recently for a special pop-up shaved ice event (set menu with a special dessert). Everytime Ive been, the food has been really good, service with a smile and there is easy parking across the road if needed (pre book to save $).

Went for the Azuki to Kouri pop-up. My partner had the snacks and duck ramen. He liked it. I had the Wagyu don which was superb! There were three different Wagyu in my bowl. Please bring this back! Ill be waiting! The main reason why we booked is so we can try Azuki to Kouris Kakigoris. We both had Matcha/ Azuki/ Mochi one. Was delicious! Cant wait to go to Japan and eat the strawberry one. I ate it too fast it gave me a brain freeze. Haha. Matcha pina colada was the best! Will come back for it. It was our engagement and they surprised us with a candle. Very sweet. The service was impeccable. Very fast and had attention to detail.

After having a dinner that cost $150 per person, I was utterly disappointed. The special menu was lacking; it would have been better not to show it at all. The waiter told me that half of the items on the special menu were already unavailable. The cocktail I wanted to order was also not available, probably because they ran out of the necessary ingredients to make it. Instead of spending money on paid articles and promotions, it would be better to invest more in ensuring the availability of ingredients for the dishes listed on your menu. The rice in the fish dish was so sour that I initially suspected it might be spoiled. It was only after tasting the beef rice, which had no off taste, that I thought the fish rice might have just had too much vinegar added. The beef rice was passable but not worth the price. The matcha kakigori was okay, but the black truffle one was an absolute disaster, the worst kakigori I ve ever had in my life.

Was looking forward to dining at Kuro for a birthday celebration; unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. The food was mostly nice quality, however nothing memorable. Most of the mains require an additional supplementary payment. We chose the Kagoshima Wagu which was an additional $40 on top of the $150 fixed price. For this type of money, I expect perfection. Unfortunately we received a piece of Wagu that was cooked nicely, unfortunately the piece of meat had pieces of gristle, couldn t be chewed and was inedible. The person we were celebrating did not have a main meal because of this. The chef kindly offered to re-cook the meal, however it was after 10pm and the first piece of beef turned them off. The waitstaff offered a free drink to make up for the meal, however the free drink never arrived. When we asked for the bill we were shocked to see that we had been charged the $40 supplement for the Wagu that was inedible. We raised this to the waiter who spoke to the manager who decided we would be charged a $15 supplement, for the meal that was inedible. Again, we advised that this was unreasonable and they finally decided that we would not pay the supplement. We understand that things can happen, and it is not the end of the world. While this is the case, the manner in which the restaurant manager handled this matter was unacceptable. You expect premium service and product when paying a premium. Terrible experience, cannot recommend this restaurant.

The food served were quite interesting and the flavours are very delicate. We really liked the refreshing ponzu sauce used with the kingfish and the Kuro fried chicken was tender and juicy. The tempura prawns weren t too special but were light and crispy. For mains, we had both types of wagyu to compare, the Kagoshima wagyu was more tender but was more mild in flavour while the David Blackmore wagyu had more bite (still tender but just more firm) and a stronger beef flavour. The potatoes were alright, I feel like it needed a lot more salt because it s mostly just carbs. If the chef was worried about guest thinking it was too salty maybe they could provide a small dish of salt that guest can sprinkle on the potatoes themselves. The desserts tasted very floral/herbal and is definitely an acquired taste. Most of the sweetness came from the fruit used (mango/pineapple), you can taste very strong jasmine in the jasmine milk dessert. The service from the waiter and two waitresses were very good. They weren t chatty or aggressive like a lot of western servers. They do their job efficiently, frequently refilling our water and checking to make sure we had our orders or informing them if there were any changes and they were polite and that s really all we want so I give them 5 stars. The payment system was via QR code which was okay. Lots of things use QR codes these days so we were familiar with it. I m just glad they still had a paper menu. The thing we were a bit weirded by was that if you ordered a la carte instead of their set menu, they expect you to order $100 per person at the table (so for 3 people you had to have an order totalling up to $300) which we found ridiculous) Parking: Park at the QVB car park and walk over. It s not far but it gets difficult to find parking during peak hours. Kid-friendliness: Serves alcohol so no kids during alcohol trading hours. Wheelchair accessibility: Sort of accessible. They had a portable ramp that you can go up on, set on 2-steps and 3-steps stairs and is quite steep. I am not a very large person and I had two people assist me (one pushing from the back and one pulling from the front). I can t imagine larger people or people with powered wheelchairs being able to get up (and more dangerously get down the steps) very easily. I think they could really do with some sort of small lift system instead for the safety of the customers.

Booked the chefs table for the second time and brought a guest from London. Amazing food drinks and atmosphere again and our guest was thoroughly impressed too! The menu is so thoughtful in the way it is crafted and curated.

Our first experience at Kuro was several years ago the weekend my husband proposed to me. We have been wanting to come back as the first experience was unforgettable. Today didnt disappoint, delicious food, beautiful presentation and casual yet professional service. Kuro is a hidden gem that allows everyday people to have an exceptional dining experience. Looking forward to returning again soon.

Had the 150 set menu last night and it was amazing. They offered to substitute the seafood courses for my dietary. And I see the extra effort on the substitutions I got, fried chicken, lamb ribs and dandan noodles. We tried the +40 optional Japanese Wagyu, I think it s really good quality and cooked perfectly. It s good for sharing (still too fatty for me after one piece) The cocktail and mocktail list are all interesting and good. In general, this is the best meal in Sydney I ve had for a long time. And the set menu can easily be 220 pp or more. Parking available across the street. Really recommend this place.

The pacing of dishes in terms of flavour profiles and texture was nicely structured - nothing felt like too much where you had to push to continue eating for the sake of it. Portions were ample and best shared in subgroups of 3-4. The food itself was not overly complicated but executed well. Overall a pleasant experience if you have the capacity to splash a bit of coin together with friends or family. The bill incl. a few drinks came to ~$180pp.

It s nice to look at, but the taste is a bit meh Came across this place on other social media and decided to give it a try as it was reviewed as some of the best valued fine dining restaurants in Sydney .hmmm I struggled to agree .tbh Had the $100 pp degustation menu, all courses were nicely presented visually but the freshness of the ingredients and combination of flavouring require more work. Some of the meant-to-be warm courses were served cold, making me doubt if everything was pre-made in a batch. Sure there are way better choices in Sydney you could do with a $100 pp price tag. Price paid: over $500 Food: overall is good, but don t like the fried chicken and dessert. Kids not welcome although I called before said there is kids menu ( lunch menu) for $45+ $15 dessert. Only 2 options but no suit for my 5 years old kid. Service: terrible service. The waitress and manager are very arrogant with fake smile. Especially the waitress. When I talk to her, I probably only can see her chin though she s not that tall. Service is more important than food, otherwise WHY not takeaway?

The food is absolutely delicious! Each dish was packed with flavor and presented beautifully. The cocktails are highly recommended. The service is attentive and the staff were all very polite and lovely. This restaurant is now one of our favorites. Can t wait to return. Dietary restrictions: They catered to our dietary requirements and we really appreciated it.

Good food, good service who can complain? Was seated immediately when we arrived and the staff were very accommodating. We had the premium seafood chef s selection. Highly recommend. The ambient lighting set the mood for a nice dinner.

Awesome food and service

Went to try their ramen pop up I had the scallop & clams ramen The broth were lacking of depth even with the help of the compound butter and had weird bitter after taste to it especially paired with watercress it s way too bitter in one bite together. Noodle were great and love the charred bamboo shoot, wish they to the same touch with the scallops.

Delious food, friendly staff , great atmosphere and chef has put his heart in creating a thoughtful menu.. tips: truffle ice-cream is a must-have! (even when you re 200% full ). But be quick, truffle season is almost over !

Cant recommend this restaurant enough! We came on a Sat lunch time and went for the $100 per head menu. The amount of food we got was very impressive. All of the flavours were fantastic. Super fresh and exciting. The menu had a good amount of variety and looked beautiful. The restaurant is decorated exquisitely - bright and airy with an elegance. The staff were also incredible - super friendly, attentive and helpful. They were constantly filling up our waters and talked through the menu. Our main server also took the time to show us some of the special sake we had in our cocktails and opened the door for us as well left. Really enjoyed our visit and will absolutely be back!

[Sept 2023] Returned here with a party of 6 and opted for the dinner degustation and was disappointed. Service this time around was very uncoordinated which was a let down from previous experience. There had been no update on the dinner menu from previous dinners which is quite boring tbh. Everything was rather basic, nothing exciting like you would expect. Added two portions of Blue Fin Tuna where the otoro was extremely stringly :( The deconstructed tataki was poor. I commend the calamari&caulifower dish which was the best thing they served. I wouldnt be busting to return any time soon. [May 2023] This was not a planned visit, however, called ahead and they were able to fit us in with very short notice. Very authentic staff, patron I dined with advised this is right up your alley and it certainly did not disappoint. 3 choices of lunch set menus and seasonal additions. Opted for the 40g uni and a couple of drinks. Flavours were vibrant and tasty. 4 stars for the following reasons: Oysters were not shucked properly resulting in a overly shelly experience but the flavours were beautiful. Beef jus was a bit bland, heavy in beef but could add a touch of salt. Everything else was great, texture wise and display. Service was lovely; authentic Japanese staff which is a nice touch.

All staff were friendly and great service. Love the large arch windows and decor. Had the (Genmaicha) high ball, went well with the drinks recommended by staff. Had the $150 set menu and everything was delicious and beautiful. They all came out in a timely manner. A lovely atmosphere. You get two desserts as well! I had the Matcha tiramisu and the mochi/jasmine tea icecream/.

Loved Kuro! We went there for Mothers Day and had a very pleasant dinner, food was delicious, fresh, and full of variety. We had the set menu and enjoyed the mixed sashimi dish and 3 Wagyu course the most. Thank you for making it an enjoyable experience.

We had the seafood chefs menu and the best dish of the whole night is the sparkling water. *EDIT* Please take note that we did not finish all the food. I am grateful for the prompt response when you texted me - and I have responded accordingly. I do hope that the restaurant can improve.

We dined at Kuro last night, choosing the Chef s meat degustation menu. I was surprised when we arrived that the atmosphere and appearance of the restaurant was very casual, definitely not in line with what I d expect for the price. I certainly didn t think I d be eating a $240 per head set menu with a set of disposable bamboo chopsticks. The food was good, though not good enough for the price. The chef came by at the beginning to show the meats he would be cooking and again to deliver the cooked meats, but otherwise there was nothing to make this experience feel special. The cocktails were very bland and lacked much flavour at all. Probably a good place for a quick work lunch, but below par for anything more.

28/01/2022: Personally, I think its a great value for money Japanese fine dining restaurant that caters to Asian tastes and has a warm and welcoming environment, I would consider hitting up the new menu again :) 14/10/2023: I ve tried new menu, it was also nice but the cocktail (Jasmine Silk) I ordered was small portion :(

I have been to Kuro three times now- I am from Perth and Kuro is the treat I most enjoy when I come to Sydney. Kuro is my favourite restaurant in Australia and top 3 in the world. Every time we come here it is new and exciting.

Love the place, amazing food and service

Best dining experience I have had in a while, great experience with amazingly friendly staff. My son had been wanting to come here for a very long time and was more than pleased. Enjoyed both chef selections, the tuna special etc. We were blessed to be able to sample both the Chefs Seafood and Chefs Meat selection menu. Definitely worth trying this restaurant. Thank you to both Chef Taka Teramoto and the amazing team.

The most beautiful Japanese I have been to, Sydney and Melbourne. The ambience, food and service were just wonderful. And the bathroom is Oscar worthy!!!

I work at a bar from 5pm under the name Kahi, but from morning until 5pm I work at a coffee shop under the name Kuro. The chi cocktail was really delicious. I cant get the Kyoto slippers (last photo) out of my head. Its coffee shop, bar, and dining. You still can drink coffee on the evening in here. And their tea cocktail was awesome. Tokyo slipper really nailed it for me.

Ordered $150 set and 6 drinks. Four of us are not satisfied cause the serving size of dishes are not enough. Drinks are good though.

One of my favourite places in Sydney. The chefs table offers high quality dishes that always surprise me for each visit. Every friend I have brought here loved it.

My wife and I went in shortly before closing time of the establishment; after the kitchen was closed already. We talked the waiter into doing something simple for us, because we were hungry and we had nowhere else to go. Amazing that they even considered our request and helped us out! BUT, more importantly, the food that came out of that non-working kitchen was unbelievably delicious- king fish sashimi, scallop sashimi and oysters, made in such creative, delicious way that we were blown away. Their cocktails were international high-end level also. Everything was rounded up by a friendly service with a personal, human touch. We were simply delighted!

Amazing dessert,great fish I prefer Mochi Rice. We have a wonderful lunch in Kuro.

Warmly lit restaurant with exceptionally friendly and accommodating service. Each course is coupled with a novel twist that will always be memorable. Without divulging in detail each course, the food quality and freshness is amongst the best. This restaurant outstandingly celebrates traditional japanese flavors contemporarily. Would definitely be coming again and I would love to recommend this place to friends.

Had the lunch menu a couple of days ago. Good price and good quality. Whilst the food was amazing, the service we received from a particular lady wasn t great from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. From leading us to the table, taking our orders, clearing our plates and giving us the bill, there were no smiles and the tone of voice was unwelcoming. The experience only improved as we were leaving. A male staff helped us with the door and said good bye to us with a smile. Not sure if I ll recommend or come back.
