Mercado in Sydney

A simply wonderful dining experience that you will not forget. The best Spanish fare in Sydney bar none, with a great Spanish atmosphere. You could easily imagine you are in a classy tapas bar in the Baric Gottica Barcelona or San Sebastian, except the garlic prawns and seafood bisque are even better! All led by the Diego and his ever attentive magnificent staff! A must when in the Sydney CBD. BRAVO MERCADO! x

Once again, fabulous food, amazing service and excellent wine recommendations at Mercado, this time from our waiter, Diego. He guided us through all our choices with well-informed explanations and suggestions which were all spot on. Mercado is doing everything right in the kitchen, as well as hiring (and training) great wait staff to provide warm, friendly and helpful service that you just dont find anywhere else. We enjoyed all our choices: the Mediterranean Spiced Chicken, Pumpkin & Ricotta Gnudi, Oxheart Tomato, Goats Curd Salad, with sides of Broccolini and the incredible wagyu fat potatoes. Dessert was delicious - basque cheesecake and a Chocolate & Sea Salt Crémeux with poached pear. Super yummy. Was with visitors from out of town - they especially loved the laneway ambience with its awesome people-watching - yet quiet enough to have a conversation. Still my favourite CBD restaurant.

Took my wife here for her birthday and we would definitely go back. We ordered the set menu for two and it was excellent. The staff were very attentive and accommodating of our dietries and there was more than enough food for the two of us. Our server, Diego, was very polite and cheerful and even brought out a complimentary brownie with a candle so we could sing Happy birthday. The stand-out dishes for us were the fried eggplant and the grilled octopus which were delicious. Were both already talking about when well go back again!

I ve always loved this place and previously had an amazing experience with great service and food. However, my visit yesterday was very disappointing. While the food was still excellent, the service from our waitress, Aurelia, completely ruined the experience. She was extremely rude, shoving food we didn t order at us, and when we clarified, she became so aggressive. It was embarrassing, especially since I brought a friend and had highly recommended this restaurant to her. The other waiter was professional and kind, but Aurelia s behavior ruined everything. It s disappointing to see such a decline in service. I hope management addresses this so no one else has the same experience.

Amazing food (complements to chef and team), wonderful friendly atmosphere. Staff were incredible - attentive, happy and accommodating - we had to move table after 1st course when extra guest arrived and was no problem at all to them. Lovely variety of Spanish wines. Our second visit and will continue to return. Being close to the Sydney Recital Hall, they go out of their way to ensure your meals are served in a timely manner to ensure you make your show. And Wow!! The warm baked in-house sourdough . All dishes were perfecta. Gracia....

We dined at Mercado last Saturday evening and found the food and service to be exceptional. Our wait staff were helpful, informative and patient when our guest was late! We could not fault the experience in any way. We will definitely dine with you again when in Sydney, whether attending a show as we were this time or simply for a great meal.

Such a lovely dinner was had this evening. Food was delicious, shared the chacuterrie plate, 650g rib eye with sides of duck fat potatoes and brocollini. Finished off with the basque cheesecake, so light and fluffy. Our evening was made even more special because of the friendly, professional and attentive service by Diego. Its staff like him that honestly make such a beautiful difference. Thank you Mercado and thank you Diego. We look forward to visiting again!

Went with my whole family to farewell my mother. First time, after 20 years, going to a Spanish restaurant in Sydney, (I m Spanish). What a pleasant surprise! Great food with top notch ingredients, something as simple as the butter and salad tasted amazing. What made it better was the amazing service by Diego, with his wit and friendliness, he made our evening x10 better. We will be back!! Gracias

Staff, food, and vibe was excellent. Super friendly staff and they recommended some delicious dishes. We had the prawns, jamon iberico, steak, wagyu fat potatoes and hazelnut semifreddo. All of it was amazing!!

Very good attention in Spanish from Diego and Paola. The food is very good, I recommend the steak and the hazelnut dessert. Highly recommended quality price. They also invited us to a shot of aromatic wine that was incredible.

Celebrated an anniversary and it was so nice. Sat down at our table with a note wishing us a happy anniversary, was a great start. Food was delicious, service excellent and Diego who was looking after us was top tier. The vibe of the place was really good and price wasn t ridiculous. Because we celebrated an anniversary we got a cute little desert and two after dinner drinks on the house which made it very special. Highly recommend for special occasions!

I had the pleasure of dining here a week ago where we were greeted by the hostess, warm with a gentle smile. The interior and the food was well presented with a few imperfections well concealed. Will surely come back to bring friends and guest in the future.

We asked for tap water but the bill said $11 for a bottle of water. I was so shocked. You need to disclose something like that! Not just assume! The staff were nice and food was excellent. They forgot one of our dishes but we were full and the staff did not make a fuss about cancelling the order for that dish.

Poured my sparkling into my partner s glass. Oppsie that wasted about 1/4 of a bottle. Waitress couldn t have cared less.

Love Mercado. We always get a fabulous welcome on arrival. The wait service is always great. Love the menu and wine list! Our dinner on Sat night was no exception. Service was quick (we were pre theatre) and very professional. Looking forward to our next visit. Mercado is my favourite restaurant / wine bar in the Angel Place precinct.

Bad really bad.

Food is okay, most waiter and waitress was polite and nice. Just the one while we ordering food was bit rude. She firmly told us to order the best dishes of the restaurant. While we politely refused to do so. Very awkward experience.

Although the atmosphere is really good there, it ruined my night. This is the most expensive cake open service I ve ever had. They changed me $35 for opening a cake we brought. We only have three people ..It is ridiculous .They didn t even inform us???? And when we were ordering, the waiter was kept pushing us order the food she recommended. Even though we already refused twice We feel really uncomfortable about that.

Delicious beef and fish. However, they charge you extra for the water and the bread, a fact they do not make apparent to you whatsoever until the moment the receipt arrives. We have been charged 100 dollars aud (exactly) for roughly four 1 L bottles of water. Would have been fine if it had been included in the menu from the start... Overall, this has put a small mark of disappointment on my up to that point a very nice experience of the establishment.

Excellent night at Mercado. Great food, wine and atmosphere. 2nd time at restaurant and both experiences have been tremendous. Also situated in a very convenient central Sydney CBD location. Highly recommend.

We had a lovely meal. There was a bit of miscommunication over a gluten free meal and the lovely hostess gave us two sides for free to make up for it. All told it was a lovely experience and I would highly recommend it.

This was my second time at Mercado. First time I went with husband and both were amazed by the amazing service, incredibly delicious food and ambience. This time I went for dinner by myself after a day out shopping + getting caught in the rain. Couldn t have done anything better than treat myself to a nice dinner. What was supposed to be a lonely quiet dinner turned into a much more pleasant experience thanks to Cindy, a lovely staff member who treated me so well that I felt like having dinner with a friend. The wagyu skewers and the pumpkin ravioli were something else - I highly recommend. Will definitely go back next time I am Sydney.

The food in this place is not fine dining! Far from it. Tasteless half baked chicken on the set menu, Nandos is by far a much better place. Where on earth do you have a bowl of chips like KFC as part of a fine dining set menu?? Unbelievable .

I was so very happy to get a last minute booking for a dozen people. The food was great. We got in 30 minutes before the crowds so the food came quickly (set menu). Its our first time dining here and I am thankful for the staff/ host for letting us in without having booking. We order starter duck patties and Wagyu Tartare and its really good and when we had the steak to share $44 and Brussel sprouts it made so cold so i ask the staff to reheat since we sit closer to the kitchen we saw it our food and its been waiting in the pass for about 5mins and no one running it. It seems they understaff and when we had it its still the same it was cold and disgusting specially for what u paid. The staff are friendly and apologising but they should have more staff so that u will not get cold food specially your paying expensive dish.

This was my second time coming, First was Saturday night And the second time was Friday night, I speaking on my experience of both nights, the food was simply exceptional. Wagu beef tartare and octopus especially.. Non pretentious food, simple ingredients full of flavours. The service was incredibly attentive without being invasive. I wouldn t usually leave a negative review but I can t recommend mercado for a pre-show meal, though maybe they were having an off night. The food we had was good, the service was slow despite flagging we had a deadline. Four times we were brought drinks we didn t order and one of our mains didn t arrive at all (first we were told it was coming, then that the kitchen was starting on it five minutes before we had to leave, then that we hadn t ordered it at all - perhaps the waitress who took our order was too busy pushing other menu items to listen to what we did want). There were other small issues. Largely miscommunication, but I felt responsible for bringing others here.

Mercado was a lovely change in city service offering a professional and warm hospitality. Food is delicious. Extraordinary wine list including sherry. Great for tapas snacks or a full meal. Laneway dining or snug inside. Did want dessert but wasnt inspired by the choices. One of the best steak tartares I have had in Sydney in recent years. Would definitely choose again for pretheatre at City Recital Hall. This venue offers a value set pretheatre menu and is conscious of show times.

We really enjoyed the experience. We were looking for something different and so looked for a Spanish restaurant. The Spanish Riesling and Chardonnay we tried were recommended by their staff and were good selections, as well as the signature cocktail we were offered at the end of our meal. Happy to recommend Mercado as a place to dine

Food was great, the octopus was excellent, but the service, while friendly, was slow and we had to ask a second time for a few things. Overall still a nice dinner, but probably wouldnt go there if youre in a rush! Also - they dont accept the TCN restaurant gift cards (despite what it says on the TCN website).

First the waitress told us our order wasn t sent through until 20 mins after ordering which made us 15 mins late to our 1 hour show. Then our kind prawn dish looks nothing like the Instagram dish, instead looks like a $20/kg supermarket prawn as attached. When we split the bill, three of us were charged 240 in total for a 214 bills without advising any explanation.

Loved it. Our waiter was excellent. Friendly and also very helpful about how much to order. The steak tartare is one of the best Ive ever had. The steak was to die for.

Had the most gorgeous dinner at Mercado! Felt fancy yet inviting. Highlights of the evening: Wagyu Steak, Oysters, Garlic Prawns, amazing wine and stunning front of house service from all staff. Lovely restaurant with excellent ambiance and tasty share plates to have with friends and family. The service is great and staff are keen to share their knowledge of the Mediterranean/Spanish menu. Easy walk from the tram or Wynyard station.

We did the $90 chefs menu. Food was good without being knockout. Portions were a bit on the lighter side...2 fish and 2 steak (4 mains) between 7 people which they probably do for 6 people. Service was a bit rushed considering we went with a tasting menu...the place was empty by 9:45pm...we were the last table there and our booking was for 815pm so a 1.5 hr turnaround...it didnt feel very relaxed!

Service was more towards 3.5/5. It wasnt bad, but there was only 1 server on the floor. But when we had the staffs attention, it was very friendly and helpful. Food was good. We basically ordered most of the stuff that was recommended to us: bread with butter, pâté, octopus skewer, roasted pig. And the dessert were delectable. Everyone loved the Spanish turon almomd semifreddo.

Four friends had dinner at Mercado last night before the Australian Chamber Orchestra concert at Angel Place. What a beautiful meal! The food was unusual and delicious, and the Spanish white wine we chose to accompany the meal was, too. Our wait staff were informed and very helpful. They were well aware of our need to dine before the concert and to get out in time. We all enjoyed the experience very much and will return before the next concert! Dietary restrictions: I have a peanut allergy and staff appeared well informed and helpful in menu choices.

Sultry and sophisticated restaurant Perfect for a romantic dinner complete with moody lighting. Decor of restaurant very alluring. Good for 4 s and 2 s. It doesn t have the charm of lane dining as it is set below lane height. This does give it a hidden and secretive feel. Food good and wine list extensive. Cocktails choice good too. Service a bit ordinary. Bathrooms good. Location- easy walk from Wynyard train station. I would have liked to give this restaurant 3.5 but no option to do so. Worth a visit with your secret love. Delicious food with an excellent selection of dishes. Vegetarian options: The carrot & goats cheese tart was excellent as was the charred broccolini and pumpkin ravioli. One of our party was vegetarian and she had plenty of choices.

Came here a few weeks ago with a couple of friends, service was excellent. Food was nice as well. It was classified as a Tapas restaurant, the plating wasnt set as Tapas. Price wise on the steep side.

Dined here with a group and had the Deluxe banquet. Overall experience was good - delicious food, cocktails, wine, ambience and service. The minor things that kinda missed the mark were the salty chips (as the fish was already salty - to achieve that crispy skin) and the sorbet dessert.

Very average - overpriced and underwhelming. A disappointing experience. We soon realised why we could get a table here and not at several other restaurants we tried booking.

Fantastic food! I just love every dish we ordered. The service is good and you can tell they have been very well trained. The staff gave very nice suggestions for the food and wine. Definitely will recommend to friends.

We were greeted by a very friendly host and bartender as we walked by to our seats but unfortunately the food and service did not match this initial experience. Food was extremely average, we had the banquet menu, which underwhelmed, none of the dishes stood out sadly. Our waiter was efficient, filled our glasses well but not warm at all, didnt welcome us, say hello or make conversation and dropped food off without a word about what any of the food was which shouldnt be the case especially for a banquet menu. I was most excited for the chefs grill expecting flavoursome grilled meats but unfortunately the chicken from the chefs grill was rubbery and a bit bland. To finish up the mousse had a way too much cocoa ontop which dried your mouth while you were trying to enjoy the mousse which from what I could tell tasted good?

Foods are generally palatable and services overall acceptable EXCEPT the man took the orders for us was terribly flout and over assertive to dictate what we had to order. When we ordered the set menu for $180 pp + wine) his response was it is too much for you guys within 2 hours and you must give up the dessert etc....! Are you first day in your job to judge your customers as glutton eaters? His words had a cruel bite to us which my wife and I felt keenly and had ruined my 38 years of marriage anniversary celebration. We can survive almost anything except his dogmatic and officious attitude. Perhaps we are so naive to get the false impression that we as Asians will welcome here.

The food was to die for. Amazing flavours. Every element on every dish was outstanding. Wine equally well matched. The atmosphere in the precinct is what I would expect from dining in a little place in Europe. Will be back.

Firstly, the steak was fantastic! But thats where it ended unfortunately. The rest of the food did not wow us. The sharing plates are really for one person. And the waitstaff were inexperienced (I understand they need to start somewhere, so maybe people should be allocated to support them!) We wont be returning in a hurry.

Delicious simple and pricey Spanish food. It ll taste amazing, no surprises but it s probably not amazing value so save it for special occasions.

Fabulous Food, Fabulous Service. We had Dietary requirements for one guest and they did not miss one part of the Mercado experience - everyone was blown away by the food! Vegetarian options: They were fantastic options and not just a secondary choice as some restaurants provide.

My partner and I came here for Valentines Day, deciding to go somewhere special to celebrate. Overall, the food was delicious and the staff were relatively friendly and quick. The only disappointing thing I would say is the portion sizes - they were too small and at times random for the prices they were charging.

The restaurant was really nice, the staff was friendly, helpful and professional! We ordered small portions to share. Oyster with jalapeño was really nice. Chorizo sausage was really tasty and unique. Beef tartare with pesto was also my favourite. I ordered 2 cocktails but I didn t really like them. Overall a nice experience. Recommended

Wow... is the only word that comes to mind. Amazing wine selection and the best tapas in Sydney. We had a selection of small share plates and they were both exceptionally flavored and exquisitely cooked.

A sharing delight. Well absolutely try the set menu next time. A charming, intimate venue. I almost missed it when looking from the laneway. Perfect for pre concert meals or just a catch up with someone who loves good food. Outstanding, mouthwatering flavours. From the theatre of having the steaks explained at the table to the surprise of plate after plate arriving. Matched with cold, crisp French Rose. The waiters were friendly and knowledgeable. The black rice I could have eaten another plate on my own. I could taste the crunchy socarrat. Well done Chefs. A labneh and cucumber salad was a lovely counterbalance to the fish and meats. Oh! if only wed had time for the dessert and coffee. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this joya.

We come to Mercado for a friends 60th and loved the idea of sharing our meals. We selected the $90 banquet menu and it did not disappoint. The food was creative, delicious, and plentiful. We were attended to by the waiter Jonathon and his service made the night extra special. We were not rushed, yet attended to perfectly. The ambience of this restaurant was great. Can t wait to return.

I was expecting a lot more from Mercado - more authenticity and better service. Unfortunately, for the price we paid and the buzz we heard, it was not quite there. Traditional Spanish dishes were not on the menu, both Spanish beers we wanted were not available, there was a confusion with our wine order (if I wasn t too attentive we would have opened the wrong bottle) Our waiter was doing his best, he was new as well (it seemed) which in a compound effect added to our frustrated experience.

Overall was a lovely experience. The starter pasta was our favourite.

The service is terrific, atmosphere really nice but the food did let it down a bit. The octopus was burnt on one side and we also ordered bread to go with the pâté which was burnt also, non burnt bits and sauce were really good and pate was awesome. Wagyu I thought was a bit off, and the lamb special was undercooked, the fat wasn t rendered and it just needed a few more minutes. I don t want this to be a negative review though as service was brilliant and atmosphere was brilliant. Food was good, just not great.

We had our 2nd annual corporate function for 30 people in the dining space under the stairs. The service and the food were absolutely sensational. Sam was incredible with the service and Emilio prepared the food to perfection. Emilio designed the menu using produce from Craig Cooks Prime Quality Meats and Argyle Farm. Emilio worked with the sommelier to match the food perfectly with the produce. The dry aged kingfish crudo, the Tova Stud prime rib and the Southern Highlands Wiltipol lamb were the standouts. For a 2nd year at Mercado, people commented that it was the best function they have ever been to. We had a number of speakers and this space was perfect. I cannot thank the team enough for the great work and would highly recommend the restaurant. I will be back, again!

The wait staff were brilliant, engaging and informative. Food was fantastic .. the Duck Liver parfait definitely my favourite. We will be back and will be spreading the word.

The food we ordered was delicious except the steak plates were not warmed. And the service was not that I paid. Waiters never came until we called out and one of the staff did not understand what we said. For this level of restaurant, our experience was quite disappointing. Especially I took my friend to celebrate on this day. I would probably not go back to this restaurant.

Service this time was not good. We have been several times and the service was great. It seems to have gone off.

Tapas was delicious, Jamón was fantastic. Highly recommend.

We have been here many times and the food is great . Been as a couple, with other couples , celebrated family dinners for my sons 18th birthday etc and the food has always been superb. Went with another couple last saturday night and whilst the food was again great, and our waitress was well versed and attentive , the evening ended really poorly. Another waiter came up late in our meal and asked if we wanted another bottle of wine to which we advised no as we already had a couple. Not long after, he proceeded to advise us that he was closing up and then proceeded to clean and upend all of the chairs of the surrounding tables while we finsihed our desserts. We ended up finsihing our meals in a forest of upended chairs. Wait until your diners are finished - it only takes a few minutes. We tilted $700 into the place and were basically pushed out the door - poor finish to a great meal.

A little sanctuary haven in the middle of the bustling city. Mercado has always been my go-to for a never failing good night out and dinner. With friends coming together after five years, it was already going to be a memorable night. The night was made even more enjoyable with delicious food, wine and impeccable service. Our sever, Uni, was charming, attentive and patient. Being a group of ladies who were constantly distracted with chatting and catching up instead of deciding on food, Uni came back several times but we never felt hurried. She was all smiles, and we loved having a personable conversation and a few laughs with her. Our group also had numerous allergies, and both Uni and the manager last night made sure we were all catered for, and no one missed out on the dining experience. It was so welcoming and no trouble for them at all. A unanimous decision that we really couldnt pick a favourite dish, as they were all morish, and just right for grazing, and sips of wine. My personal highlight was the duck liver parfait. Thank you for a great night, and of course we will be back time and time again.

Totally impressed by Mercados service, food, and atmosphere! Id never been before but went off google reviews and we had an incredible evening with excellent service. I think what impressed me the most was as part of my group booking I hadnt informed Mercado until that very afternoon, that one of my group was a vegan. So when I arrived, I mentioned it and assumed itd be too hard, but no - they knew, they addressed it and the food that came out for that guest, was impressive! Well done as most places dont do vegan very well. The restaurant manager was also so personable and awesome .. made us feel very at home and wanted as guests. I was impressed by his service to us. Would go back anytime for those special ocassions as its a place worth visiting. Everyone loved the food. We had the $115 menu.

Sadly, they have taken the vegetarian fare off the menu.

Most of the meals we ordered had too much citrus or too much vinaigrette. The braised beef needed some salt. The food was good not great.

I went there for dinner because I thought they could make good Spanish food and being from Spain I missed their food. We ordered a menu for 70 dollars per person and they gave us two pieces of dry bread with butter, 6 slices of sausage, a tartar that was good, two pieces of octopus with chistorras (a terrible combination) the octopus was good but it was literally three pieces . A salad that was just lettuce with vinegar, some frozen fries with aioli and a baked chicken that was super dry and for dessert three scoops of ice cream that tasted of nothing. In short, a lot of food to fill the stomach but poor quality. I was very excited regardless of the price of the menu and left highly disappointed.

Came here with a group of friends for my birthday party last night. Service was really great, especially from Jerome (hope I didnt misspell his name.) Jerome has done an amazing job taking care of us. We had the $90 set menu. Food was amazing, especially the steak. Restaurant was accomodating to people who are vegetarians/pescatarians too so kudos to you. I would definitely be back again but this time going for the Ala carte options.

We all loved the food. Only suggestion is that if that octopus dish had more. 2 piece wasn t enough.

Upon entering the establishment we greeted warmly by the host. The ambience was intimate and dimly lit which was perfect for our girls night out. Our waiter was friendly, funny, knowledgeable and attentive toward our needs. The wine and food was delicious and offered a sensory experience for the palate. The only critique would be with the pumpkin ravioli - there was quite a lot of filling in comparison to the pasta. The filling also had an unappealing texture for a pumpkin ravioli. Other than this, the Balmain Bugs were delectable and the hommus was to die for. Will definitely be back for another wonderful dining experience!

I absolutely love this restaurant. The food is thoughtfully curated yet uncomplicated. The staff are very professional and friendly. I ve been here for lunch and dinner ( multiple times) and always had an excellent experience.

I realize I give a lot of 5 stars but that is only because we research and find restaurants that service chef inspired and fresh foods. Never go past this place. The effort this chef goes to is amazing and every bite a delight. The setting and service add to the delight. The chef is bound for heaven as Jesus will want his skills up there

On arrival, we were escorted to our table and was offered water for the table. We then waited 20min until someone acknowledged us, and we then ordered the water again, drinks and our meals. Not the best start, however from then the service was ok. The food was excellent and the wine list very good.

Simply outstanding. Dined here on a busy Saturday night and had the deluxe banquet menu, food was incredible. Wait staff and bar staff went above and beyond. Highly recommended and will be back here soon. Try the Vanilla Martini cocktail. Great atmosphere also.

Amazing food, the ravioli is the best I ve ever had, hands down. The staff are warm, friendly and accommodating. This was our second visit and we ll be back again.
