Dawson Diner (Formerly Sweet G's) in Thunder Bay

This was my first time at Dawson Diner. Im thrilled that it is all one level now. I was able to get in with my walker. We were there on a Friday evening. My husband had the pickerel, my mother in law had the rueben with seafood chowder and I had the liver and onions. The food was delicious. Portions generous and it was hot. I cant wait to go back again. So glad they reopened. Parking: There are stairs at the front of the building, but if you drive around the back of the building, there are handicap parking spots and no stairs.

On my way from Victoria to Toronto, stay here for a night. The cabin was comfortable and the breakfast was amazingly delicious. This is what exactly should be included on a long way road trip. It totally helps you refresh your brain and body. Anyone who is traveling to the eastern coast should definitely come and try their homestyle breakfast.

Dietary restrictions: Vegetarian and gluten-free options available. Parking: Huge parking lot. Always room. Kid-friendliness: High chairs, kids menu, crayons and coloring on back if kids menu. Free drink and $1.50 dessert with kids meal only which is only $8.50.

For typical North American roadside diner food and service this is a great place to stop Wheelchair accessibility: They are a few stairs up to the front entrance but otherwise theres room

My girlfriend and I decided to eat a meal before hitting the road. Because of the reviews, we chose this restaurant. I ordered the Lumberjack and the food was cold. The sausages look pathetic. The eggs are cold when it hits my mouth. The only thing that s justifiable was the price. It s filling. On the other hand, my girlfriend got the s mores Nutella French toast plate. In every breakfast restaurant I ve been to, the plate always comes with hash browns or at least some fruits. But for this, it only came with two slices of French toast, some Nutella and marshmallow fluff. The price was $17.50 or $18.50. Nevertheless, for that price point, it should come with other food. I would not come to this restaurant again if I visit Thunder Bay in the future.

I cant even explain what happened when I went in there was two tables of people one more came in after we got there my daughter and I first of all the other table before she even brought my daughter her coffee my daughter had to go up to ask her she goes well Im busy really rudely we had been sitting there for at least 15 minutes at this point and still no coffee then I ordered the hot turkey mashed potatoes vegetables gravy supposed to come with it says on the sign she finally comes to the table now Ive got hot turkey french fries and coleslaw where is the vegetables she goes am I in the kitchen really rudely I said I would like vegetables like it says on the menu well there is none she says rudely you think she would ask me if I would want something different before just bringing whatever they like why ask me if I want a menu if Im not getting what I order the places disgustingly dirty the whole back corner where she saw us was filthy dirty along the wall was grit that looked like it had been there for months maybe even a year the floor was nasty the bathrooms were nasty the front window and the door was disgusting I cant imagine what the kitchen looks like still my daughter had not got her coffee till she got her food we said were out of here she says do you want to square up we havent even touched the food she almost body slams my daughter with her chest pushing up against her then she insinuates that we have to pay for the food that we did not order thats not what we ordered Im 62 years of age and I felt so embarrassed by her behavior my daughter says mom square up means she wants to punch us out progression was terrible then she comes out and wants to take a picture of my plates which was no problem I would have wrote them down for her my daughter posed for the picture the woman was disgustingly rude and the place was so nasty I definitely am glad I drove another half an hour away to the city to have dinner I would have been very disappointed to stay there if I didnt get sick from eating their from the disgusting food the tables were gritty the food all over the floor I wish I would have had my camera to take pictures if you go there make sure you look at the grit along the Steel part of the tiles and at the bottom and the bathroom I dont know how these people stay in business I definitely will be calling the Health Department it was that bad heres a few other reports of people being there I wouldnt waste your money they dont give you what you order anyway

Wonderful experience with the new ownership. The waitresses were so kind and attentive, and the food was delicious and hot. The atmosphere is relaxing, somewhere you can bring your kids and family. I am excited to see what the new owners have in store for the restaurant.

The best Finnish Pancakes in the area by far. extensive menu while maintaining high food quality. Love the location, and the service is excellent.

Weve been wanting to try this place for ages. Finally popped in today. A little snafu with my steak sandwich, which was fixed by the super adorable waitress immediately. Hubbys burger was tasty. A sample of their Finn pancakes was a treat! They were pretty wonderful. All in all worth a visit.

Borscht! Raisin Pie! Home made everything! Skip the nachos. Wonderful service.

Very disappointing on our last visit...club house sandwich looked like chicken salad in the bread little tiny pieces clumped together with way too much mayo. Bread was hard and stale. Definitely not to their usual standards. Just a terrible experience this trip....never had such an awful meal there. Usually the drive there is worth the visit. I may go there again for breakfast but not for dinner.

Amazing, you have to take the family. The food was the best Ive had since moving to Thunder Bay two years ago. FINALLY a place I can take my family for breakfast that doesnt leave a weird taste in your mouth after the meal. The portions are worth the price which also is fair. The interior needs some updating but that is the only con I can come up with. The service was above and beyond and incredibly friendly and attentive. The food came to our table at lightning speed. I only wish I could give them more stars. Keep up the good work guys.

Decent priced and quality food!

Took the kids out for our daughters birthday dinner. Fun was had by all. Great prices. Awesome service. The food was amazing and I cant speak enough about the portion size. I even bought some hot sauce. Wings were top notch!

Our family loves the pancakes and sandwiches. Every time the food is hot when it comes and delicious .

Prices were higher but in line with home cooked meals. Wait staff were friendly and efficient. Seating is comfortably and varied. The hot Turkey sandwich had slim pickings for meat. They wanted to charge extra for white meat- there is less dark on a bird. Found bone chips in the meat. For this reason, we ll pass on a return visit.

I had an omelette here several years ago when passing through, that was one of the best Ive had. Finally got to stop in again and the everything omelette was just as good as I remembered. Service was exceptional also.

Good food, great service. Classic NWO Diner food, that brings back a sense of nostalgia. Some the the waitress even call you hun.

The food was okay. In my opinion, it isnt worth the money, but inflation is hard these days. The service was great and the people were nice. The hot sauce provided at the tables tasted kind of weird but I wouldnt say its bad. I felt like I was in an episode of the show Supernatural and I was about to get murdered by a ghost. That part is because I am mentally ill and not because the restaurant is bad. Overall, I would give it a 4.7. Would recommend friend meet-ups. (On second thought, the hot sauce was really good)

My family stopped by here on our way to NB. Everyone was so kind, food was delicious and hot. We had to stop by a second time on our way home. Highly recommend. My children loved it

I would suggest finding elsewhere to eat if you have a large group of friends. The staff has no concept of timing meals. Half our table were almost done before the rest recieved their food. Also, other patrons who ordered after us were recieving sporadic meals as we sat and watched our party eat. Highly unprofessional staff that never offered an apology. Would not recommend

Can t tell you about the food, after 1 hour we just left. I know it was busy, but the waitress told us our plates were ready, 10 minutes later still no plates and as our food was cooling the waitress too busy talking and counting her change after a big tip. So never again. We were not the only ones that felt this way.

Our waitress Lauri was very friendly and always had a smile for each and every customer. The restaurant was quite full, but the 2 waitresses were very fast and efficient, staying on top of everything. Food is always delicious and a good selection. The front outside of the restaurant needs work as its dark and looks like its closed.

A bit dated, but the most amazing food every single time. Very nice to have a sit-down place this close to Lappe!

With the new ownership I was excited to return as I used to go to Sweet G s on a regular basis before they closed, but I was unimpressed with how dingy the place looks. Plain grey walls, no decorations to liven up the atmosphere, and I had a mozza burger with half a slice of Kraft mozzarella cheese. Unfortunately I don t plan on coming back again.

Home fries was not hot other than that they were good

Hot turkey sandwich, hot hamburger sandwich, and Finn pancakes. All totally delicious.

We were passing Tbay during our road trip. we ordered for a Alfredo pasta, wings, perogies and salads. The food was awesome. The behaviour of the staffs are exemplary. They are polite, professional, helpful. Awesome experience overall

If youre heading west out of Thunder Bay, hit this spot. The food is great, the service friendly, and the prices are a throw back to the 90s. Finnish pancakes were a highlight.

Server was either very new or really inexperienced and was not very friendly. Messed up my husbands entire order and when I told her she slapped her leg and let out a huge sigh!! Table was covered in sticky syrup and I had to go grab paper towel and water myself to wash as the server seemed frustrated with what she was doing already. Food tasted alright but won t be returning.

Tip these fine hard working people. Ive been there once and I already feel like family.

The restaurant was okay but they used scotch tape to tape the menus to the table which felt unsanitary. The cabins were a nightmare to stay in. DO NOT STAY AT THE CABINS. There are dead bugs everywhere and there was no heat coming from the furnace at all. The first night I got there it was snowing so I slept in the car to avoid freezing to death. During the day I had to turn the oven on and blast hot water to not freeze to death. I didnt dnt shower at all during my stay because with my hair wet, there was no way I would be able to warm back up again. 0/10. Do not recommend.

My sister and I went Saturday morning for breakfast, we got our drinks right away but no one took our order. We waited and other tables got thier food. We did flag down a very busy waitress and she got put food to us so fast. We really didnt mind waiting as we were enjoying each others company and knew they were busy. Our waitress would not take any money no matter how hard I tried to pay her. She just said make sure to come back again. Of course we will, we have been in her shoes, we both understood how she was feeling. Amazing service and food, we will be back again and again!

A million restaurants have lived and died there,but Sweet Gs seems likes its here to stay! With wonderful, cheerful staff, and food that is actually quite yummy for any restaurant thats ever been there! I love it. My mother and I go there all the time and we just adore it! Its so cozy and the food so comforting. The staff so welcoming. Always just a very nice experience! Its also close to home!

Nice place. Clean. Staff very friendly. Bathrooms very clean. I had the turkey rice soup. Tasted homemade, with a couple slices fresh baked white bread...delicious! I added a toasted western on fresh made rye. Excellent!

Brought the wife and kid. Wife had fish and fries with gravy.. Gravy was pretty much brown floured water gross. Kid and I shared chicken wings and nachos.. Nachos not much flavor and chicken wings were absolutly horrible.. #1 ordered medium wings which tasted like a litle hot sauce mixed with ketchup.. Not really edible on top of wings which were obviously pre-cooked and then reheated...meat was very tough and hard to chew.. Horrible experience and will never return!

Food was good. Service at our table was good. Did observe one waitress at a booth bringing a drink with her hand around the lip of the cup. Discusting, the cup had a handle. I wouldnt have let her serve our drinks. That should be common sense and not gave to be taught

Nothing wrong with the food here but the young blond girl (owners daughter) had such an attitude After someone at my table mentioned that 2/4 of our orders were wrong to the waitress but that he will eat it anyways, she said why would you complain about it then. Because obviously there is something going on. She was not sworen at, or mistreated. but all 4 of us were kicked out and told to never come back and even threatened with the police. (All other staff here has been great.. one rotten tomato in the bunch ~ and her mother has no choice but to believe her BS) I eat at restaurants all over town and have NEVER had an issue. Let alone kicked out of a restaurant and threatened with the cops. So much for the customer is always right.

Stayed at the cabin here. The best part of it was the amazing breakfast in the morning! Best coffee and pancakes for miles!!

Our group go up every year for our annual moose hunt, we always drop in on the way up and on the way back. Great food, friendly fast service. The best!

Came here after a random google search of breakfast and I have 0 regrets of checking it out. Great Breakfast selection, food and kind service. Would bet that youll enjoy here too. Was here with my wife and with her family. Very happy with this place.

Stopped here while passing by on a long trip, asked if they could do take out and the lovely server rushed our order to the kitchen so we could get back on our way quickly. The food was really good and very reasonably priced and good portions.
