We came in without a reservation and were seated immediately. The staff here are incredibly friendly and personable, they recognized us despite it being a while since our last visit! The bartender helped suggest and curate a drink for us, which was super thoughtful. The food was splendid, as always, arriving quickly and beautifully presented. The CSB was fantastic, and we stuck to a favorite with the classic R&D fried rice. We also had the lamb chow mein, a newer addition to the menu, and it was excellent—especially after adding a hint of lime. I’ve always had a wonderful time dining here 🍽️

Good food, but frankly don't understand what they were doing in how it was served. The concept is dishes that are app sized, small, and large plates. We were suggested to order around 3-4 plates to share for 2 people, on the basis that we could eat them together (fried rice together with the charsiu and a veg), but the food was brought out one by one, with the fried rice arriving last. Didn't really make any sense, we got the broccolini first which we ended up finishing before the char siu arrived, we slowly started on the char siu and ended up saving half to eat with the rice but by the time the rice came out the char siu was cold. Not really sure if that was an error or if they just bring the food out as it is prepared, but I didn't enjoy this one way or another. Also, tables that arrived and ordered after us were served their fried rice before us. Taste-wise everything was great, just don't understand the concept, and at the price point I'd have expected better. Also, really not sure how I feel about being stared down by a massive mural of Mao Zedong from across the restaurant.

My friend Danny arranged this dinner. He also ordered the duck dish one night before. The service was outstanding by Ray. The food was great. The duck dish was the best duck dish I had anywhere. Cooked to perfection. Was a delight to enjoy every bite. We had other dishes including fried rice which was crunchy and delicious. Was a very nice dinner. Need to visit again.

Their mushroom fried rice is good, the platting is very creative. Their long green beans are very good. The atmosphere is very chill, great to go with friends. Just be aware their food is on the pricier end.

Came here twice once for my birthday (tried the duck) and for the summerlicious. The food was fine to me. Some dishes I find very interesting and creative and some are good but feels quite average. The duck and their fried rice were worth it imo the dumplings are quite overpriced. The vibes are cool though with an open kitchen, the service is okay both times I was there, not outstanding for that price range.

My wife and I were here for our anniversary. We opted for the 3 course meal they offered, all the courses besides the deserts were super average not something of a high rated restaurant as this. I got the chow mein and I really did not like the style I couldn’t even finish it and there was no attempt to offer a different dish. For the price point, I would not recommend this place.

Came with high hopes and ended up being underwhelmed. Food was good with quality ingredients but nothing jumped out as memorable. It is possible that the summerlicious menu is not as good as their regular menu. All in all, with that price point, I expected innovative and memorable flavors.

I’ve been passing by this restaurant for many years and never actually got to visit until now for a Summerlicious dinner meal. Came on a Sunday evening, and the place was fairly crowded. They have their cafe/ desserts at the front, then you pass by the kitchen and then come into the dining room last. The dining room has very tall ceilings and interesting decor with wall murals and these large light fixtures that look like drums. I found the quality of food to be inconsistent throughout the courses. Service was okay. Our server was fairly attentive, but then another staff member will start to clear our table without saying a word and bring this almost gloomy feeling like they’re not happy to be there. So maybe consistency on the front of house as well could be improved. We had the xiao long bao and Viet beef carpaccio for our appetizers. The dumplings were okay. They were piping hot when they came and there was still quite a lot of steam escaping from the bamboo basket when they came to our table. I found the texture and taste to be fine. The carpaccio had a lot of onion and garlic on top and was quite sour. Both appetizers were fine, but I wouldn’t order them again. The fried chicken was the best dish I came across here. The chicken was cooked well, flavourful, and was pretty crunchy. The fried rice had a nice texture and I really liked that it was made with butter. It felt like a well balanced dish altogether. The black pepper beef on the other hand was really quite surprising from the first bite. It was shockingly sweet. It was a strong flavour, and I felt like the pasta wasn’t enough to counterbalance it - like the dish needed something else to round out the taste. Maybe this could have been good as a smaller portion, but to have it be a big bowl of the same strong flavour with nothing but the rigatoni to help tone it down was overwhelming. On the plus side, the meat was tender. We chose the panna cotta for dessert. You have the white panna cotta with blobs of bright red raspberries melting into it, which was maybe not the most elegant or appetizing presentation. Texture and taste were good. Overall, my experience here left me a bit confused and part of that like I mentioned is a consistency thing with the food and the service. I also don’t necessarily get what they were going for with the interior design. As a customer, there’s not a strong cohesive feeling for me to take away from my visit here which was supported by the food, service, and ambience that provides a clear vision.

3.5. These fusion places basically take really good Chinese dishes and turn them into something random + 5x the price. For example, taking a perfectly good dumpling and then shaving a truffle on top. Groundbreaking. They had a couple good takes but overall food was mid.

Nov 6th, 7PM, the 4 of us went in and got seated. Impressed by the menu and atmosphere at first, but quickly got turned down because of the service and (partly) of the food later. We ordered 4 items: Crab&Pork Siu Mai, Lamb Spiducci, Lamb Chow Mein, and R&D fried rice. I gotta say the Spiducci was amazing, Siu Mai has too much of ginger-ish taste to it. Chow Mein was rather spicy but we weren t given any notice about it. Waited for 40 mins, never got the fried rice and my friend had to leave early. Not a single apology from the chefs nor the servers and managers. We had to tell them not to make it just so we could get out. Bill total came around $90. Not a critique nor a chef but I feel like the menu is being stuffed with premium ingredients rather than trying to stick to a Asian-based fusion restaurant. None of us left full nor happy so we had to grab food at House of Gourmet. Would not recommend.

October 22, 2024

The 1 star is for the overall bad experience. I feel like I need to write about this negative experience tonight. We flew into Toronto from NYC excited to try the famous peking duck at this restaurant. We had booked the Peking duck experience for Friday. I modified the reservation by to the day and for some reason there was a glitch in the open table system and the Peking duck experience portion of the reservation got removed without any knowledge to the one making the reservation. This is an internal glitch of the system that the restaurant knows about. Even though the restaurant and server knew about our disappointment we didn t have an opportunity to come back another day without the getting penalized with the $50 per person cancellation fee. We proceeded to order other items on the menu. Everything was fine but we would have expected something comped or an apology as we were obviously disappointed by not having the opportunity to have the duck. We received dirty plates, and we had various servers serving the dishes. We had to ask for new sets of plates. Pacing of the dishes needed improvement as we felt rushed. Overall we did nothing wrong yet we didn t really have the experience we had hoped. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Rudest customer service ever. Whoever handles the phone needs has zero etiquette

September 22, 2024

Food was very strong-flavoured with a weird mix. It seems that they are trying too hard to be unique , yet forgetting all the basics. The fried rice was good, but the eggplant dish made me wonder if the chef ever learned cooking. The music was loud in an open space but I could not hear anything because everyone was screaming just to talk. The servers were kind. For the amount and quality of food, it is insane how much they charge.

Note these photos are taken after we started eating and not indicative of their presentation. We were looking forward to trying this restaurant having watched MasterChef 1) Siu Mai. The sauce is so overwhelming and spicy we couldnt taste anything else. 2) long beans. Perhaps they are still ok, but the almost yellow color was off putting. The sauce was good but beans quality questionable. 3) cavatelli. Im not sure what the sauce was doing. I apologized that I ordered this dish the second I smelled the sauce. 4) fried rice. Different, crunchy I guess. 5) char Siu Bao. Was good but nothing special. We got there at 6pm. Atmosphere was good. Service was ok. Now the restaurant was pretty full on a Wednesday night at 7pm so perhaps its just not for us.

Pretty damn disappointing. Aside from the few classics (duck/fried rice - definitely delicious), the menu is a confusing nightmare of horribly executed dishes. Also, a bar staff member that is downright uncalled for on the potential prejudice of asking the only coloured person at the table you good sir? Do you have a reservation? overly assertively when getting up to go to the bathroom. The weirdest part is beginning to approach them until its said Ive already been dining here for an hour. Followed by the bartenders awkward silence after their oh in reply. Ive been thinking about this interaction for a couple days now, and yall really need to check the guy at the front bar if hes going to racially single out customers. Two caucasian people at our table got up to the bathroom during dinner but were never berated by staff. Even if its an oversight, who trains their people to interact with patrons in that way? Kind of just shows how out of touch everything at R&D is. I ate here once when it opened many years ago, and regrettably recently again, really wondering how this place was even awarded a Bib. But, most importantly, dont be a racist whether you intend to be or not.

Great restaurant option in the heart of downtown. We booked with a large group of 7 people, which requires pre-ordering our food. The staff sent a sample preset menu, taking into account dietary restrictions that we were then able to modify as we liked. Everything was great from start to finish. All of the dishes were delicious and we left very full for a reasonable price. The duck is definitely worth ordering ahead! This was our first visit and what a wonderful experience! We love Chinese cuisine and R&D brought us to the next level. Beginning with the service, I called prior to see if there was any availability on a Saturday night of a long weekend and thankfully we were welcomed graciously both on the phone and when we arrived. The decor is modern and interesting. We loved the open kitchen and countertop dining. We sat at a comfortable booth table for three. Drinks were delicious but the dishes we ordered were the stars of the night. Our server kindly recommended some of her favourites so it was easy for our first visit. Nothing disappointed. We ordered the popcorn shrimp, the shrimp toast, fried rice, brussel sprouts, fried chicken, and the Iberco pork. Everything was fabulous. The three favourites, as we each had to choose from all of these delicious dishes, were the brussel sprouts, the rice and the chicken. We will be returning to try more and rave again.

Came here for the set menu for a date night, but ended up feeling disappointed by the main. I got a pineapple cocktail, which was good, recommended by the server. For appetizers, we had their pan fried dumplings, grandpas fun guo, and xiao long bao. I think that all the appetizers were pretty good but very basic, as you could get pan fried dumplings and xiao long bao for WAY CHEAPER and for a better taste too. Favourite was grandpas fun guo. However, when our mains came out, the experience changed. I had a pasta (dont remember the exact name but contained beef) and it was EXTREMELY SALTY. Like i tried to finish it but i seriously couldnt. My boyfriend got the fried chicken but there was way too much numbing, which may be a personal preference, but it was a bit too much, and also nothing that special either, just rice, a load of chili and numbing spices, and some friend chicken. Desert was good, we got the brownie which was nothing special but good, and the panna cotta which my bf really liked. However, the bill came out to be 170 ~ before tip and that is around $85 per person which I believed is definitely not worth for that price point, in my opinion. We went to get a fried chicken burger after this. 2 stars for service and atmosphere, but food was very disappointing for how much it was and the taste.

This should really have a $$$ pricing instead of $$. So misleading. Paid $30 for a small plate of their signature fried rice. It was nice, but quite expensive for fried rice lol. We also had the green beans, which traditionally are supposed to be stir fried until its closed to charred (the Chinese way) for the extra flavour, but we were disappointed that it was only cooked. Maybe because it was Asian fusion. But overall a disappointment because its an awkward blend of western and Asian cooking. We also had the CSB which was a watered down version of an actual CSB, with some crusty thing on top and were 2 small buns. The CSB, beans, rice, and one dessert came to almost $90. Portions were tapas size (small). Nice presentation though. Although I did feel like it was a slap in the face to take the best parts of Chinese cuisine because how dumbed down it was. Probably a nice place if youre bougie and want to introduce someone with 0 experience to Asian food.

I had a really enjoyable dinner here. The food was a definite highlight! We opted for a selection of sharable dishes, which gave us a nice variety of flavors and textures opposed to getting the duck as we were only a party size of 2. Heres what we had: Char Siu Bau Popcorn shrimp Shrimp Toast Beef Tartare GRANDPA S FUN GUO Finally our star of the meal was the WOK LOBSTER, I thoroughly enjoyed that dish. Our only slight disappointment was that our drinks were delayed, arriving only with our third dish. It could be that the restaurant was particularly busy, but the timing did throw off the flow a bit. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Despite the minor service issue, we still enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. While we skipped the duck this time (it probably would have been too much for two!), wed definitely return to try it with a larger group.

R&D, just south of Chinatown, has a lot of competition. They offer bao, fun gao, Peking duck, tteokbokki all next door to other restaurants that also serve bao and fun gao and duck. Of all the things we ordered, we didnt find anything that stood out. We got the tteokbokki and found it tasty but similar to what wed had elsewhere. The Peking duck was nothing special; Delicacy Kitchen on Dufferin does one better at half the price. The brussel sprouts, an inventive take on the deep fried then stir fried vegetables normally done with green beans or eggplant, were worse than the originals. They dripped with oil and sugar and tasted a little burned. We didnt find anything we wanted to have again. I think the worst part was the loudness of it all. The restaurant is in a warehouse-conversion-looking space; there is a trendy exposure of beams and brick. The music is loud. The kitchen is open. The next table is nearby. You can hear the table next to you struggle to understand the conversation theyre having because, well, theyre screaming it to one another to be heard. The brick and the beams just echo all that noise back to you.

Also we wouldve ordered more if we were in a bigger group setting but if you have 6 or more, you need to preorder at least a day prior but it was a birthday surprise so it was difficult to order without informing the birthday boy. It also had a minimum $65 requirement per person which did not include drinks with 20% gratuity.

Really great experience here the other night. Service was very helpful and diligent. The food was delicious! The CSB, French onion spring rolls, the fried rice and the Iberico charged siu were outstanding. Wouldn t order the crispy squid again. That dish needs a sauce. The n the end we left so full I almost needed to call an Uber. Really enjoyed coming here, look forward to trying more dishes next time.

Service was good; so were the signature cocktails. However, the dishes were disappointing: 1. Vegetables (whether broccolini or wok-fried long bean or Brussels sprouts) were smothered in heavy sauce that was loaded with salt and sugar. The Brussels sprouts were deep fried beyond recognition and looked like charcoals with the heavy sauce. 2. The dim sum needs improvement as well: the beef was chewy in the kalbi beef bao, and one can hardly taste the crab in the pork & crab siu mai as the curry was overpowering and had a soapy taste. 3. The fried chicken was tasty and tender, but the lamb spiducci was extremely fatty. 4. The greatest disappointment had to be the so-called best duck in the city. Nowhere is it mentioned in the menu that the whole roasted pekin duck is the chef s own creative spiel. It s not fair to charge a customer $120 without fair warning that it s not going to be anything like what one will expect of a traditional roast duck: it was undercooked and tasted like smoked meat. Other than a few presentable slices, the rest of the duck was not even properly carved; it could only be best described as being chopped up. Overall speaking, I would not recommend this restaurant, especially if you care about your health, both physically and financially. One would think that $525 would ensure a scrumptious meal for two, but alas! That was not to be.

The Best Duck in the City (Peking Duck) was absolutely phenomenal and was incredibly tender. It deviates a bit from the traditional Chinese duck that I am used to, and I find the duck flavour to be a bit more subtle. The skin also isnt super crispy, but the flavour when paired with the bao, hoisin sauce, cucumers, and leeks is like a beautiful marriage. This is not a conventional Pekin Duck that you would get for takeout at a Chinese BBQ. R&D does it differently, and it is delicious. The Brussels Sprouts were the most delicious I have ever had, and are served beautifully browned and in a delicious glaze. The R&D Fried Rice and Persimmon Bavarois were both delicious. Flavour meets textures, and these dishes bring a delightful crunch to your palate. The Shrimp Toast, French Onion Spring Roll, Grandpas Fun Guo, and Pork & Crab Siu Mai were all good to okay, though not something I would probably reorder. My only regret is that my stomach was too full to try the other things on the menu.

This has been on my list ever since I found out that it was opened by an award winning chef. The place is in a nice location with a nice area to wait before being seated. The atmosphere is not as fancy as youd expect. It is more of a casual vibe with nice artwork. As for the food, we had the shrimp toast to start which was unique. Not really my taste but a few others at the table really liked it. We also got the brussel sprouts as well based on a recommendation. It was good but I found it a little burnt. As for the mains, these were my favourites as the fried chicken and the fried rice were absolutely amazing. They had a different taste and made it unique compared to other places. We also got the dandan Mian which was another table favourite. For dessert, we got the sticky toffee pudding which was probably the best thing even after the mains. This was just the perfect mix of everything with the apples being a nice touch. I would come here again just for this dessert, it was that good. Overall, the restaurant was a great experience and not too expensive either for what you get. I definitely recommend going as a group as its more of a sharing menu. Dietary restrictions: We told the waiter about peanut allergies

Despite the Masterchef fame, our experience here was disappointing. Dim sum dishes were expensive but not particularly remarkable. The green bean dish was drowned in sauce. I was looking forward to the mushroom fried rice but it turned out to be very oily and had a strange flavour. The overall atmosphere was not very comfortable, as it was loud and tables were placed closed together.

The crispy squid and cocktails were the star of the show. Service is good but the R&D fried rice took way too long to come out. Shrimp toast was was too rich/oily, and the siu mai wasnt what wed expected. The fun guo was a bit disappointing on both taste and presentation when you consider the price tag of $25 for 3 steamed dumplings. The only cocktail I didnt enjoy was the lavender haze. It was very bitter and tasted like soap. All in all, we spent about $326. The service was excellent and very friendly, which is the majority of these stars.

Good Chinese restaurant in Toronto downtown. It is offered a regular amount and variety of traditional Chinese dishes. Quality of food here is not excellent but good enough for a casual night out. Beef baos and buns are tasty and very well cooked, good options to start with. Unfortunately, popcorn shrimps are not as good as they seem to be when you read the menu. They have no tasting unless dip them into the sauce that comes with. One remarkable starter that surprised me was the spring rolls. They are filled with kind of an onion bechamel, which reminded me a bit to spanish croquettes. They are worth a try. As mains, I would recommend the fried chicken and the mushroom fried rice. They were both delicious, very well seasoned and prepared for the table. The menu is designed to be shared to have the chance to try more plates, and quantities served are according to the price. As a reference, for a group of four people I would recommend ordering 6-7 plates (2-3 starters, 2 small plates and 2 mains). Desserts here are nothing special. Sticky toffee pudding has a strong taste which is not the best way to finish a meal, but other than that the cooking point was achieved .

r&d is kind of a difficult place for me to rate. im usually someone who doesnt mind spending a little more in regards to food if i know its going to be a quality meal, but something about this experience is leading me to believe its a little bit overrated on a positive note, not taking into account the food, i can confidently say r&d is a great dining experience! i have some severe allergies, and the staff was extremely accommodating and assured me that i wouldnt have to worry about anything. it was one of the few dining experiences where i wasnt anxious or on the fence about eating anything. everyone was also super attentive, kind, and overall great at service. i highly recommend getting bar seating if its just 2 of you so you can watch the kitchen staff cook! now this is the hard part. im trying not to over-inflate my rating, but i do want to give credit where credit is due for the rest of the place. but for a restaurant, the food itself? i wasnt exactly the biggest fan of, which should be the most integral part of a dining experience. i understand that this is supposed to be a shared tapas experience, but even ordering 5 meals between the two of us (~$200 total for the meal for reference) i felt underwhelmed. i dont even want to begin to think about how much you would have to order for a larger party if you wanted to get a proper taste of everything. portion sizes werent crazy, so be prepared to spend a lot when coming here as in regards to taste in quality.. i only really enjoyed 2 out of the 5 dishes we got. i do highly recommend getting both the kalbi beef bao and iberico char siu though! the bao was super fluffy and tangy, and the char siu just melted in your mouth. i couldve gone without the pork & crab siu mai and popcorn shrimp however. i found the former to have a combination of really clashing textures which was uncomfortable to eat, and the latter had a flavour profile i didnt enjoy + i felt as though it was lacking in actual shrimp the whole menu is an interesting, but confusing approach to asian fusion. you get a lot of chinese and korean dishes with some other combinations sprinkled in there, but its all done so in a way that lacks authenticity and is more so catered to the western/white palette all in all, its something you pay for if you want the cool experience of eating at a canada masterchef winners place, but i wouldnt really go into this expected spectacular food (surprisingly enough). i think given its price, i dont see myself recommending this to anyone visiting the city, as you can get a lot more quality for a lot less money in tandem. it fits the bill of one of the many fancy, overpriced, restaurants in this city that seem to lack substance in the actual food department

The food was generally very good. CSB: The char siu puff is made in pineapple bun way, a bit salty. Pork & Carb Siu Mai: Thai-style siu mai with a curry seafood flavor, very unique and well-blended. I really liked it. Grandpas Fun Guo: We didnt order this dish; it was served to us by mistake, but it was really delicious. The truffle flavor complemented the crystal dumplings perfectly, very fresh and fantastic! Foie Gras Sou: The star of the show, even better than the dishes we ordered, truly excellent! The tangy sweetness of the jam and the fresh taste of foie gras were perfectly balanced without any off-putting organ taste. Kale Caesar: Just an ordinary kale salad, nothing special. Best duck in the city: Emmm, not to my taste. The aged duck meat is more like char siu, but the fat lacks the sweet complexity, so its greasier than char siu. The lotus leaf bun makes it even greasier. Its very much like the salted duck my family used to make when I was a child, but eating it like Peking duck reduces the sweet bean sauces aroma and saltiness, and you cant taste the ducks flavor. Vegetarian options: Do provide veggie choice Dietary restrictions: Do ask dietary restrictions Parking: Limited green p

I visited RD for my partners birthday and really enjoyed the Peking duck we preordered. Sadly I will not recommend this restaurant or visit again because the service we received really ruined the experience. We had ordered cocktails at the same time as we ordered our small plates of food that did not arrive by the time we finished the plates. I spent a long time trying to get our server s attention. eventually it became obvious that they were avoiding looking in the direction of our table as they were only a few feet away from us as I had a hand in the air for several minutes. When I got their attention finally, I asked about the cocktails and they said they would go check with the bar without any apology. Our cocktails came as we ate our duck, while I had hoped to order a bottle of wine with it. Our server did not check in with us once as we ate. I had noted we were celebrating a birthday in my reservation and the host wished my boyfriend a happy birthday when they seated us. I watched as complimentary desserts were brought out to 2 other tables. We were not offered anything. The server hardly mumbled a thank you as they processed our payment.

Overall is quite disappointing make me lose faith on Asian fusion food again The best dish is the calamari pao, nice balance of spice and texture. Lamb skewers are too sweet that you cannot even tell it is lamb - the texture is too chewy. Duck fried rice is alright but the duck is covered in sauce and see no point of it. Salmon is smelly and the rice noodles sauce is sour - probably Thai fusion based but just do not see they go together. The desserts: mango pudding tastes good but the texture is nothing close to pudding more like some mousse. The matcha in tearamsu tastes artificial and low quality, and the soybean powder does not add to it at all. Came here for the Winterlicious menu and not sure if it is good deal..have no intention of coming back for regular dishes

Dropped in for Winterlicious. The great - tom ka. The good - chocolate mousse, tea-ramisu and the calamari bao, the OK - the duck confit fried rice (dry), the ugly - the spicy fried chicken (ridiculously over salted) and garlic rice (dry, almost dessicated). The service was top notch.

The two stars in this review is for service and drinks. NOT FOOD. Food: Not sure why Winterlicious menu food items did not look 50% the same as the R&D website Winterlicious page. The starter - Calamari bao is 10/10 - then the rest of our dinner was very disappointed Disappointed food items are: The duck fried rice - 0/10 because the rice is not cooked fully. I asked our server why the rice is very hard and crunchy (just too hard for us to chew) She answered us that there are alot of ingredients in it lie salted egg, garlic So it was not cooked enough for sure i took the left over home to try again i usually not challenged any fried rice for rawness. Because that can be happened al dente like paella rice for example. TEAramisu - 0/10 because it looks very ugly, I never expect a Michelin restaurant did it this way for the pastry. No tea taste on the cake, green looks like green food colouring, not green tea powder like the one on website kinako powder all over the plate. Drinks: 10/10 Drinks are very nice, so definitely recommend for drinks. Service: Very good service. Our server answered all my food questions. Appreciated her explanations bot not helping our disappointment because it is my birthday celebration dinner. Atmosphere: The interiors and decors are beautiful and hoping the food is the same. We thought we try the winterlicious and come back for the regular a la carte menu in future, now i am not sure. :(

Very excited to try the Demon chefs restaurant! Service was friendly and quick. The decor seems to be a bit all over the place. A tad loud but not terrible. I love the walk by open kitchen concept. We went to try the winterlicious menu. I tried the passion fruit mojito. It was very sour. Like having a sour ball in your mouth. Too sour for my taste. Lamb spiducci was so tender. A bit of spice to it. That was our favorite app. The calamari in the po boy was delicious and crispy. I feel like its missing something to freshen it up like lemon. The bao itself was a bit spongey. Ive had better baos but the filling was very good. The duck fried rice was the star for me. So flavorful. I love the sweet tanginess from what I think was the oyster sauce in the duck. Good salty balance in the rice and I loved the crispy bits and the crunchy green onions for texture. The fried chicken was very flavorful as well. I think it could be crispier. I like how the rice seemed more tone downed in this dish to balance the strong flavors from the chicken. The chocolate mousse itself was delicious. I liked that it was different from a standard chocolate mousse. It seemed more cakey, with more texture than a kind of gooey mousse usually has. The flavor was so good as well. I did not like the orange sabayon though. Too sour for my taste. Overall a good experience. Would love to come back and try different dishes. And I got to see Eric Chong from Master chef Canada in his element and just chatting it up with diners. Very cool!

Overall an ok experience. We went for the winterlicious experience. All the dishes tasted way strong for us. The calamari bao was my favorite. We could tell the chef is very skilled in making it crunchy but not overcooked. Tom kha gai tasted like Tom yum but it s way too sour. Similarly, the fried chicken and cold noodle with salmon king were overpowering in flavor, requiring ample water consumption to temper the intensity. On a positive note, the desserts were a highlight, particularly the mango pudding which boasted genuine fruit flavor, albeit with a dense texture. Perhaps a bit more milk would make it more like mango pomelo sago.

Even though the items were brought, and introduced as creative and certainly they are of quality ingredients however, craving food that s Asian inspired was not at all what this restaurant delivered to. Be prepared to make a reservation ahead of time if you plan to come during the long weekends, or weekends in general. R&D has been one of the restaurants I wanted to visit when I first heard of them, and it was definitely not a disappointing night. When you come in, the hostess will help settle you in (there is no coat check). R&D is pretty spacious inside, and features an open concept kitchen where you ll see the chefs in action - including the owner Eric (I wish I got a chance to ask for a photo!) They have a variety of Asian fusion dishes to choose from, including their own variation of dim sum! One of their most popular dishes is the R&D Fried Rice, and yes, it was very tasty! I loved the crunch it has which I believe were called Singapore crunch, and had the wok hay taste I enjoy. Another popular dish is their own variation of the peanut pecking duck called The Best Duck in The City, and it has to be preordered at least 24 hrs - so be sure to include it in your reservation!! The skin was crispy, and I love how they smoke the duck meat. It comes with buns instead of the thin traditional wrap. For two people, the portion was a lot, and we had to do take out. I was really full, but overall satisfied with the dishes. The only reason it wasn t 5 stars for me is the service. I felt our server wasn t as welcoming if I had to describe it, and it felt he was kind of rushing us. I ll definitely be back to try their other dishes in the future! IG: Ayeween

Good food and service but nothing wowed us. Fried chicken was juicy but the sauce was a bit much. The actual bao bun was great. Loved the tartar and green beans. Tequila cocktail was okay. Good music but dead. It was a very cold weekday.

Make reservations on the weekends because is packed. The service was great, everyone very attentive and friendly. I loved the french onion spring rolls. The Brussels sprouts are super tasty but the flavour is strong to eat it alone so we eat it with our fried rice (best fried rice on earth) and made our own baos with the ibérico char siu. I didn t like the sauce of the ibérico but that s a personal taste, so I just put it on the brussels sprouts sauce and was perfect for my bao. For desert I didn t care for the sticky toffee pudding (very sweet for my personal taste, but the cake was delicious). I really loved the kalamansi tart (perfect crispy, sweet and citric) can t wait to come back and have it again :)

Fantastic dinner at R&D. Every single dish was outstanding, including the Emotional Damage cocktail that I now have emotional damage from because I will want one everyday. This isn t a cheap dinner, it s a taste experience. Loved the decor too.

I would recommend the R&D fried rice and shrimp toast. It was Chinese food with a twist, and everything had a great balance of flavour, texture, smell, and presentation.

Wasn t as good as I expected. The Peking duck was definitely a let down in comparison to other Chinese restaurant Peking ducks. After all the process done, I expected it to have a lot more depth of flavour, which wasn t the case. The skin was not as crispy either. It was nice to try but rather sub par. The R&D fried rice was phenomenal though. Best dish of the night. Everything else was pretty decent.

We made a booking for 2 at 5:30 pm for a bday dinner and arrived on time but were given a very tight space seating while there were many two seater vacancies available (at least 6-7 tables). We finally chose a table less congested but without much privacy. We observed other a party of 2 customers who arrived later were given the so called reserved tables. I wonder why our standard reservation were different . The food we picked were mostly recommended by the restaurant but not particularly impressive except for the hiramasa sashimi starter. It was refreshing and tasted delicious. The shrimp toast was also nice but one of the them was a bit burnt. The cha shui boa was a bit overated as a must try. The fried rice was very different from conventional ones and tasted ok but on the oily side. The wok fried green beans were too hard. The services were mediocre. Despite there was complimentary ice cream desert, the overall satisfaction was below average for a supposedly special bday dinner ( specified at booking).

A really cute place for elevated Asian plates! Came here with my family and order 4 apps and 2 mains. We started with the Char Siu Bao, Siu Mai, shrimp toast, and fois gras. The fois gras and shrimp toast were really impressive! The other two were good too but not as memorable. We then got the hainan chicken rice and the wok lobster named after the chef s IG handle. The chicken was quite forgettable but the lobster was amazing! Overall great service and atmosphere as well. And everything was beautifully picturesque.

Was quite excited to try this restaurant, but to me it didn t really live up to the hype. The brussels sprouts were easily my favourite dish, I could have eaten multiple servings of these alone. The mains on the other hand, both the R&D fried rice and the Iberico Char Siu, were overly salty and quite underwhelming for the price point.

I ve had my eye on R&D for a while and finally chose it for my birthday dinner. No regrets! With a combination of dim sum, small plates and mains, we got a good sample of their offering. Each plate was delicious, some more than others. My favourites were the French onion spring rolls, lamb skewers and the fried rice - trust me and try them. The atmosphere was moody and casual, great for a range of experiences from work events to casual dinners to celebrations. Our server was excellent and we appreciated his knowledgeable recommendations and approachable demeanor. There are a few minor things that kept me from giving 5 stars: - the price: we spent over $300 on our meal and while it was delicious it did feel overpriced for what it was (we didn t order drinks) - the plating: some of the dishes left something to be desired. For the price they lacked a bit of wow factor Overall, if price is not an issue for you, I think R&D is worth a visit because you won t leave hungry or disappointed. The dishes really are so tasty and I ll be thinking about the fried rice and spring rolls for a long time to come!

Overly expensive for above average tier food at best. The portions are small and not filling. Example: the siu mais are better than your average Chinatown ones, but its 18$ compared to 5$. Its definitely not 3X better taste, so the value per bite is low. If youre willing to spend hundreds of dollars for food thats good, but not worth it, then this is the place for you.

Been treated to the first winner Canadian Michelin stars restaurant serving fusion Chinese cuisine. For me, an Asian mom, surely surprised in everything here. Wow! Can t distinct what authentic Chinese food from this modern innovation of my favourite Peking duck. Taste is really but compare with price, I still prefer my authentic Peking duck ..big portion,so crispy like eating cracker. Juicy and tender meat with free compliment fries rice with duck meat. Menu list is very simple, not much selection with a combination of dim sum, small & main plates, and dessert. But the service staffs here are amazing, all handsomeness guys, so energetic and attentive.

I love love love R&D! This was my third time here and this time, I got to try the Peking Duck and the Minced Wagyu DanDan Noodles. I ve also tried their Fun Guo, R&D Fried Rice, Lobster Wok, Spring Rolls. I m making it my mission to try everything here. While the food is on the pricier side it s super worth it. The Duck with the bao buns was AMAZING! Definitely up there in terms of best Peking duck in the city. The Wagyu noodles were a pretty small portion but I savoured every bite. I m definitely coming back again and am going to be a long time customer of R&D

Best meal Ive had for a long time! The service was attentive without being overbearing and the menu is set out in a really nice way so you can have a larger main course or a selection of smaller plates. Highly recommend this restaurant if you have a special occasion or are meeting with a group of 6-10 people

Cocktails: unique and delicious. A good start. Appetizers: - Foie Gras parfait was awesome. What a delight. The Foie Gras kept its flavour amidst the sweetness of the current jam filling. - Lamb Skewers with peanut sauce. Nothing special in my opinion - felt similar to most satay sticks but perhaps more tender. it was on the salty side as well. At this point, we ordered a glass of wine each. One red and one white to try food pairing. Starch: The Dian Dian mein. Pasty more than saucy which made it quite salty. It felt like eating pasta with peanut butter if you can imagine that texture. I wouldve enjoyed it slightly saucier as that dryness, without an alternative texture or flavor just was overpowering for the palette. Protein: Iberico Char Siu was the showstopper and boy did it not disappoint. Delicious, tender, juicy all the way through. The sauce was sweet and the julienne scallions on top just perfected it. Given the amount of meat, if it accompanied a fresh bao, wrap or jasmine rice bowl, wouldve been extra good. Atmosphere: We sat closest to the entrance doors which wasnt bad. Comfy couches but the bar felt like it wasnt refined and had half of it for storage or something. Like a bubble tea service stand by day, and storage / unused by the evening. The action was in the back with the open bar kitchen, so it felt like two restaurants. Service was attentive, pleasant and informative. Overall, a delicious meal but just lacked a special something / surprise & delight factor that I would come to expect from a Bib Gourmand restaurant.
