About

Shoushin is a luxe Japanese sushi bar located in Toronto’s affluent north end. Helmed by owner and head chef Jackie Lin, Shoushin specializes in carefully crafted, authentic Edomae sushi. We craft sushi that is pure, fusion-free and extraordinarily authentic. Expect seasonal, sometimes rare, ingredients on our omakase tasting menus. All in a luxe atmosphere that is both stunning and intimate at the same time. Shoushin’s sushi bar is fashioned from hinoki wood, a Japanese cypress revered for its fragrance and rarity. Because we believe that perfect sushi is best enjoyed in as perfect a setting as possible.

I have been lucky enough to have experienced a lot of omakase meals and Michelin locations. This restaurant has blown all of my other experiences out of the water. You can tell Chef Lin loves what he is doing and loves the experience he gives his guests. The staff is ON TOP of everything. Tiny things, like I started eating my sushi left handed, (I am right handed), and so they reset my wet towel placement, something I never would have noticed or thought about. The fish was tasty, and someone at our table loved the soy sauce so much, he drank it 🫣 Will go back when I visit Toronto again!

As a “sushi holic lover” ,I haven’t tried any restaurants contain the BEST quality of「sea urchin 」satisfied so far,to tell the truth,I was afraid it’s gonna be disappointed .BUT!! Authentic Japanese Restaurant-Shoushin(匠心) gives me a 120% superior taste. 😋 I especially want to know why sea urchins taste neither pungent nor fishy at all? They answered the sea urchins are collected in Russia, processed in Japan, and then returned to Canada. In terms of details, the silky, delicate and dense eel and the ingenuity of using sea salt to restore simulated sea water🌊 allows each ingredient to bring out the best in taste details.Non of dishes made me disappointed. They specialized in Edomae(江戶)style sushi and I really like how they named the shop-Shoushin (匠心)means ‘craftsman heart’. Overall, it’s an excellent restaurant . It costs $400+/person, although I still feeling hungry when left,I still highly recommend it.👍🏻

Food is amazing, season omakase that is authentic. Get the private room with Jackie for the best experience. 10/10 would 100% do it again and again and again. The wasabi and fish is better than anywhere else in Toronto. Jackie travels to personally inspect and acquire rare ingredients that bring out flavors we have never tasted before. It was an immaculate experience. Great presentation and amazing service. Friendly and worth it.

An unbelievable experience. My wife and I visited Shoushin for our wedding anniversary and we were not disappointed. On the day we went, the restaurant had just recently received a Michelin Star and rightfully so... The quality of fish, the presentation, the flavors, the service and the overall atmosphere were second to none. We tasted things that we have never tasted before and Shoushin just blew ours minds! There were things that my wife and I normally don't eat at any other Japanese restaurants (I usually don't like squid and she does not like Uni)... but here... the taste and quality had us enjoying absolutely everything (even the slice of melon at the end of the meal was like nothing we ever tasted before)! All of the staff were extremely friendly, courteous and knowledgeable in each of their roles and I must say that this restaurant offered some of the best service we have ever received at any restaurant. We will definitely be back to enjoy another incredible meal with all the wonderful people at Shoushin!

This place is a scam, came here for my birthday but disappointed. I ordered the fixed course which is $500+ per person but after they said that s what they prepared for us today we were not full. They added a few more pieces but we were not notified that the pieces will cost extra, they also charge over $100 for the dessert melon. This place is not operated by Japanese either.

Michelin starred omakase experience, and well deserving of it. Shousin is definitely worth trying. Every little detail in this cozy little restaurant will wow you. Chef Jackie is a master of his craft, and is very engaging with his guests. If you have questions, hell go into great detail to explain the mastery of the dish and the ecology of the fish. It just makes the experience so much more enjoyable knowing every bite is hand-crafted by a master who is super knowledgeable in every small detail of every individual ingredient. Ive dined at other expensive omakase restaurants in the city, and none can compare to Shousin. The service here is just top-notch. Just not having a tea pot in front of me and having to refill my own cup, already speaks volumes about Shousins service standards. Make sure to check out the washrooms too. They have some next level Japanese bidets. You dont see a lot of these in Toronto, and you definitely wont see the ones from Shousin anywhere else either. If youve been to Japan, you know there is a huge difference in the level of the bidets. I just needed to pee, but sat down and enjoyed myself for a bit (get your mind out of the gutter ) Not to mention, theyre washrooms smell like that 5-star hotel hallways, I dont know what theyre spraying into their vents, but it works. 10/10 recommend. But dont take it from me, its Michelin rated for a reason.

I could not believe how rude the chef Jackie Lin was to the person dining with me who was struggling with extremely large pieces of nigiri. He also butted into another couples private, quiet conversation about the food, rudely disagreeing with their opinion. This guy is too cocky for his craft. It is unfortunate that he did not pick up Japanese hospitality and avoidance of putting people (especially guests and customers!) in an awkward situation with ones actions and words, when he was learning Japanese cuisine. He does a good simulation of Japanese food but the hospitality is missing and so the experience is incomplete.

★★
July 22, 2024

Gorgeous space. Very good sushi. Chef is too aggressive in correcting customers. Bro, your nigiri is too big. Like extremely uncomfortable to eat. That s why I took a bite. Don t yell at me. Look inwardly at your own craft and why you are creating this awkward situation for your guest. And don t be rude to your guests. Not acceptable.

I went there for a date not too long ago, and unfortunately I cannot recommend it. The experience was... for lack of better words, highly pretentious. It would be hard to find a place that greater exemplifies paying for appearances over substance. The entire place just exudes an aura of snobbiness. And its reflected in the attitude of the Chef, who seemed to go out of his way to listen into our conversation, and even make unsolicited comments and corrections about our opinions of the dishes. Yet at the same time, the dishes were really in no way memorable... Im not a Toronto resident, so I cant draw any local comparisons, but having dined at several upscale sushi restaurants in NYC (non-omakase), this was honestly barely keeping up with the quality level that I would consider standard for an upscale restaurant and could get at NYC restaurants for $100 (USD) per person. However, the final bill here was over $1,000 CAD for two people. It did not feel justified at all. The best thing about the experience for me was the sake pairing which was delightful, diverse, and generously portioned.

Stunning intimate restaurant with interaction with the chefs, the food is made in front of you and you can see the care an attention that is taken in preparation. We had the tasting menu pared with saki, what an exquisite combination that has to be tried. The many saki options was a new eye opening delight to be taught new tastes and pairing options. Highly recommend this restaurant and well deserving of the Michelin star. Love it . One of our pictures shows what real Wasabi looks like before being grated on this special device which is a replica of the sharkskin grates used in Japan. New fun fact!

The appetizer and sushi served were fresh and tasted very good, with lots of uncommon variety of seafood. My wife and I dined here with 2 other friends. As there were many dishes/courses being served, my wife eventually felt full and took smaller bites with the sushi to not risk gagging or puking. The chef serving us did not seem to be fond of her eating it in smaller multiple bites and asked if she wanted less pieces but she declined as she still wanted to try the dishes and offer up the rest of the dish/piece to myself to further enjoy. The chef kept looking at her to monitor if she was eating it properly which was uncomfortable. During one of the courses, the chef stopped serving my wife and only provided dishes to our 2 friends and myself. This left her to feel ousted whilst already feeling uncomfortable. The servers were very attentive and kind, and also ensured our dining area was always clean and beverages were topped off. We would ve liked the chef to be more understanding and provided a more comfortable dining experience.

Hands down the best restaurant I have ever been to. It was a very special treat. Every course of the Sakura Omakase dinner was incredible. We got to try so many things we have never had before. Every flavour was interesting and amazing. The texture and taste of the fish was unbelievable. It s certainly not a meal that we could enjoy frequently, but well worth the cost for an extra special night out. We sat at the bar, which I would really recommend. We got to watch the chefs at work, they were ready and willing to answer our questions. The service was incredible. It felt like they knew what I wanted before I did. I do not drink, but my husband got the Sake pairing. He really enjoyed all of the options and we all enjoyed learning about the different types of sake and how to pair them with the various courses. When we went, we told ourselves this is a once in a lifetime meal . Now we can t wait to be able to visit again.

I am beyond thrilled to have stumbled upon this amazing Japanese restaurant, and I just cant recommend it enough! A few things really made this dining experience stand out for me, and I have to share them. First off, their sushi game is seriously on point! Theyve taken care of every little detail, from the sauce and fish to the rice, everything was paired to perfection. I didnt even need to add anything - this is hands down the best sushi Ive ever had in the GTA! Now, let me tell you about the delightful surprise I encountered. There was this soup, which honestly looked like a noodle dish at first glance. But guess what? Those noodles were actually delicate, transparent baby eels! Such an inventive and tasty creation! And finally, the sea urchin - oh, the sea urchin! It was so sweet and completely free of any bitterness, making it an absolute treat to savor. In conclusion, if you havent been to this Japanese restaurant yet, youre seriously missing out! Trust me, you wont regret giving it a try.

WARNING..Do not go if you like fresh wasabi! You will be charged for extra wasabi $10 each time when your average bill is already over $700 per head? This is unheard of in any REAL Hi CLass Sushi restaurant. Do not be fooled by the michelin ONE star that was mis awarded to this restaurant!..Operated by a CHINESE chef owner Jackie Lin (Ex-apprentice from Zen)! OVERALL very disappointed. Service is very good, But my assigned sushi chef is really bad.(A Canadian Korean Boy). Fish are fresh but no surprises...very ordinary. Overpriced and overrated overall. $480 for omakase dinner plus extra and comes to $700 per person. For this $$$, go Sushi Saito.....(a different leaque) 100 times better. I visited this restaurant last month with my wife a two friends. When we walked in, we were asked to wait in the tiny reception area for 15 minutes even though we showed up right on time for our reservation. We were tired of just standing there so we finally asked if we could have a drink and they allowed us to order drinks at the bar while the chefs were preparing the meals. We were finally taken to our seats around 20-25 minutes later. We travel extensively and going to restaurants is what we do 3-4 times a week. I am at awe as to how this restaurant was awarded a Michelin star. First, for four people, our bill was around $2,500 including drinks (beers and a few bottles of Sake at around $200 each). This is around double what we usually pay at similar restaurants, with half of the attention from the chef and nowhere near the quality that we have experienced elsewhere at similar restaurants in Toronto. The Chefs have an attitude problem. Interaction with guests is next to zero, unlike their competitors who take the time to interact and explain things to their guests. Plus, most places the chef at the very least introduced him/herself to everyone and explains the servings, even if s/he has supporting chefs assisting with the food preparation. At Shoushin, this is not how it works. You may, or may not, be served by the main chef. For us, he spent the night serving his group of friends. If you have tried the food at their competitors restaurants, you can easily distinguish one from the other (i.e. the superior quality and craftsmanship of their competitors over Shoushin). Overall, we should have accepted the negative reviews on Google and skipped this restaurant. The $2,500 that we paid would have gotten us better food at their competitors restaurants and we would not have had to deal with subpar food and a chef who has forgotten how modesty and humility is so deeply rooted in Japanese culture. Save your money for better food and better chefs who do not have an attitude problem at other restaurants. If people are giving this 5 stars, they clearly have not experienced what their competitors have to offer.

The best seat in the house? A seat in front of Chef Lin at the counter. The restaurant has a presence of its own, notable in its clean minimalism. The staff are friendly as ever and seemingly never in a hurry, the chef approachable, prepares the fish with an art, and keeps his nigiri traditional with little more adornment than a brushing of nikiri. Other dishes that bookend the Omakase meal flex far more creativity. At the end of the meal, we left appreciative of the clean flavors, that were amazingly both simple and complex at the same time. A very memorable anniversary dinner. We definitely wont wait that long before we return.

Shoushin has really matured since my last visit - granted this last visit was in 2017, a time frame approaching five years. We had plans to go back in 2019, but we all know why that didn t happen. It s a restaurant that is more sure of itself: there s only two menus to choose from with the omakase at $300 or a more personalized experience, the obsession perfection, priced at $450+ depending on the selection. Their staff are more knowledgeable - about the restaurant, alcohol selection, and the ingredients used and operates with a synchronized precision that would make Henry Ford happy. Right after the menus are whisked away, a hot hand towel arrives, followed by cold drinks, and an amuse bouche - a bite of spinach boiled in kelp broth and topped with dried rich tuna flakes. For the winter, the kelp broth seemed to be a cornerstone of their appetizers, a comforting staple like chicken soup. This is followed by another warming dish, a piece of smoked king fish sitting in a puréed daikon broth. The accompanying cutlery was difficult to use. Although pretty to look at, the wooden spoon combined with a shallow dish made reaching the broth difficult (unless you pick up the vessel and drink from it). From what I manage to get into the spoon, the savoury silky soup went well with the lightly scented meaty fish. The fish was described as quickly deep fried, but there wasn t a crunchy element, which if they could have managed a bit of crispiness would have made the dish even more interesting Sashimi arrives next, served over three dishes to ensure we enjoyed each one as intended. My favourite dish of the night was the fatty tuna simmered in plum broth. The rich savouriness of the fish balanced nicely with the slightly sweet tartness of the fruit, sort of like having pork chops with apple sauce. It s fragrant, flavourful, and warming, something I could have had an entire steak of surely. And before the sushi, a cup of miso soup made with red and aged miso, which was so light on the salt that I wouldn t be surprised was not seasoned at all. Nonetheless, it s surprisingly flavourful with an umami acidic property to it. The finely chopped shallots were an interesting choice, maybe for the slightly crunchy texture, but a bit overpowering given the under seasoned soup.

Im really sad and disappointed about my experience at Shoushin. I was so excited for this meal and had been looking forward to it for a while (since it costs $400+/person). When you walk in and throughout the meal, service is fantastic. But thats the most I can say about it. In fact, I cant say the same about the chefs. They were extremely distracted talking with each other and would glare at us if we asked what a dish was. For how much this meal cost, I was expecting to be served innovative dishes using the freshest seafood. Instead, the majority of the dishes were just sushi - rice with a slice of fish. There was nothing special about what they made. Most of the fish that we got we could get at other, much cheaper, omakase restaurants. I was expecting to be wowed, but instead we left still feeling hungry, even after purchasing an additional 2 dishes. Overall, not worth the price or the hype at all and will be choosing a different omakase experience in the future.

Great omakase where we get a little chance to choose the kind of fish/sushi we would prefer. We went with the overall more fatty fish theme but then we did not get to try the other things they were offering tonight like snow crab or ikura. Wish they could have a list of offerings tonight to let you choose from it or get a chance to try everything.

Truly one of the most disappointing visit and menu I ever had. I came before covid, it was amazing and super dream worthy experience but this time around it was a complete joke. Picked the $480 menu. I was expecting a lot more for what Im paying but nothing was special, thought it was super basic. Between every nigiri, too much wasabi couldnt taste the freshness of the fish. Also told the staff I was allergic to the melon dessert, didnt get a replacement dessert. Not only was the owner giving us dirty/judgemental looks, other chef was rude.

A world class experience in every way... the interiors - the exquisitely-crafted wood sushi bar, the knowledgeable and polished staff, the interaction with the owner behind the bar. Weve been to Michelin starred restaurants and spent less - its VERY expensive, but this is a one-of-a -kind venue in Toronto of uncompromising quality. I only wish they had a more casual takeout menu (especially during the pandemic) because other than Soushin, quality sushi at Yonge and Lawrence does not exist.

Had dinner there. Everything is good. The place is clean. The staff is polite and ready to serve customers. The décor is pleasant. The food are good, however there is no wow to surprise me. The price is very expensive comparing to other Japanese restaurants where you can eat for similar food and service. I could pay for less than half elsewhere in the city and also get good service.

Went with my husband. When I saw the menu it shook me to the core, because they serve at risk and endangered seafood. Do your research before supporting such a place and in the least do not buy the food that is nearing extinction (osetra caviar) or endangered (bluefin tuna).

Shoushin is probably the best overall omakase sushi place in Canada (maybe Masaki Saito is better, but the price tag is roughly more than double for an already expensive meal). The ambience is comforting and elegant, and the service matches. Chef Jackie endeavours to procure great and sometimes esoteric (at least for Canada) ingredients such as Kohada while giving them the loving preparation they need to become incredible pieces of nigiri. His sushi rice, perhaps the most important element of sushi, is extremely well calibrated and still ever improving with the right amount of acidity and just the mildest subtle hint of sweetness. It pairs great with all the different neta, and he has one of the greatest varieties of seafood available (last time I went, he had 5-6 different variations of sea urchin alone).

December 22, 2020

Such a disappointing experience. Nothing special, nothing creative. When I pay 400+/person, I d expect to be wowed . The fish and dishes were very ordinary - toro, uni, shrimp...I can have it at many other places so why Shoushin, why this price point when this place doesn t strike a difference? Omakase is supposed to work along with the seasons; the ingredients, fish and even the cooking methods should reflect that for the best tastes. Also the rice was not made right, by that I mean it was loose! Some rice dropped from the sushi, some was stuck on my finger! Making sushi rice is the most basic but critical skill for any sushi chef. Overall not worth the price!

Expensive omakase but food is not worth that price. I have had many experience trying out Japanese food in Japan, Asia and here in Toronto. I am quite impressed of a few restaurants in the GTA area so I had high hope for this place. The menu has 3 Omakase options, lowest is close to 200/head, then 300 to 400 each. I picked the middle to try out. I have to say, the first few appertizers were highly disappointing because the taste of the food was... too simple, no detail of Japanese cuisine arts, not perfectionate( ) at all! The batter from fried shrimp was not fried till crisp, and it was served cold. Portion was also tiny, not small, but tiny. One signature appertizer that was mixed with caviar, uni and minced toro. That to me was very weired. The toro taste was not that pronounced (not the best toro) which was supposed to be, sturgeon caviar kinda bring up the taste of the toro but also kind of wasted the caviar... then you mix these with uni and it then covers more the toro taste. Overall it is a fatty, luxury mix of all 3 kinds of seafood delicacies with their unique tastes, but now they are ovverriding each other. The middle price Omakase comes with the Wagyu beef with 2 options of cooking to pick. I picked the fried version... but I was again very disappointed. They used bread crumb to coat the beef for frying as last step, after frying process with bread crumb it would cover the true taste of the beef. They also give you 3 condiments for the beef... salt, mustard and sweet red miso. You can simply forget abt the miso, it will strongly override the beef. Not need to say, i believe Ive got 3 tiny pcs total maybe 20 grams of beef. Sashimi plate...when they say premium, it is not high end fishes or nice seafood that you would expect, but rather using cheaper seafood, some marinated, some well cut, placed on nice dishes for presentation. Again, tiny portion. For sushi... supposingly the famous spot light of the restaurant. The Chinese Chef (tell by his last name) seems to have good nigiri skill because rice is cooked and marinated to good taste and texture, but rather not warm enough. The fishes are not premuim, out of 10 pcs, I find 3 pcs were happy ones and the rest were just so-so. Its still lack of surprise taste and freshness of each bite compare to those very good Japanese sushi places in GTA. Dont even compare those in Japan. I am writting this review because I paid $300 but I dont think that was worth the price.

Service = 5 Food and Experience = 3.5 Overall = 4 Having been to Yazu (see my other review), I was comparing our Shoushins experience to it. From the first step until the end, the service was fantastic! We felt like we had someone serving us the whole time as our teas were topped off constantly, table was cleaned whenever a drop of soy sauce touched the table, and the staff there pushed our chairs in and out whenever we needed to get up. Foodwise, it was good and fresh. My favourite was the O-Toro as the fattiness of the fish literally melted in my mouth. The wife loved the scallops and clam and we both loved the uni! However, we werent big fans of the duck and the winter melon appetizer was just ok. They had four choices of dessert and by far, the creme brulee was the preferred dessert (by the waitress and between the two we had). While we were dining tonight, there were 4-5 different couples, mainly situated around the bar (highly recommend requesting a spot there when making resos). There seemed to be quite a few regulars (surprising as the dinner wasnt exactly cheap) as the chef addressed them by their names. This was the part that was most disappointing for us as it seemed like the chef was more attentive to these customers. He didnt even really make a point to get to know us unfortunately. Overall, it was a good experience but it wasnt exactly spectacular. The service was excellent and it did satisfy our cravings for good sushi but will most likely try other places in the future.

For the finest Japanese / sushi experience you must visit Shoushin. The experience end-to-end was phenomenal. The wait staff meticulously attend to every detail like wiping up a tiny drop of sauce that ended up on the table after one of the courses. We sat at the bar which is made of a stunning solid piece of Japanese wood. Its a fixed menu format with the option of adding a-la-carte items near the end of the service. Each course was exquisite and showcased a different style with deep layers of flavour. The sake pairing is a must try experience as well - each type served is perfectly paired with the food and had a real distinctive taste. The price is not for the faint of heart - by far the most expensive Japanese/sushi meal Ive ever had, but worth every penny.

I could totally appreciate the quality of the seafood and the idea behind it however it s overpriced. If you are not interested in different textures and flavours don t ever go here but if you love a good culinary experience it might just be your favourite. For me personally I can appreciate everything but it was not for me. & the $600 bill for 2 people didn t help. The wagyu was amazing, the thing i liked best. They just need to make it more a la carte in my opinion, it can still have the same feeling.

Its a very good high-end Japanese food restaurant. The decoration in the store gives people an elegant atmosphere. The menu is divided into three levels, which are respectively 200 dollars, 300 dollars and 400 dollars +. After tax and tip, you basically have to pay more. The ingredients for this 100-dollar sushi are very fresh. I like the sea urchin sushi that melts in your mouth.
