70 Fraser Ave, Toronto, ON M6K 3E1, Canada
Chic eatery with industrial decor & 2 patios, serving creative brunch, lunch & dinner, plus drinks.
Came here for a Sunday brunch. We were only 2 people, so we were able to get in without a wait, but any larger groups definitely had to wait a bit. The food here is delicious and the portions are pretty big. We got a chicken and waffles and Synonym Toast, which was very tasty but very sweet. Also split a side of the hash browns, but be aware the Jalapeño sour cream is spicy! However, the service was slow and not particularly friendly or attentive.
Overall good! I recommend the chicken and waffles. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was the service. The service was okay but the tip started at 18% which is definitely high for the service. Also, generally on the pricier side of things as most main dishes were $20+
We had to wait 30 minutes for a table, so plan your time accordingly! The food was amazing—we ordered Chicken and Waffles, blueberry pancakes, apple crumble pancakes, and the ‘Safe Bet,’ which included eggs with potatoes. The portion sizes were generous, and I’d recommend sharing the sweet dishes between two people unless you have a serious sweet tooth.
Wanted to like this place. Food LOOKED good, but it didn't taste very good. Pancakes were too dense and kind of dry. The waffle was soft and ok, but it's only a waffle. The fried chicken was dry and it seemed that only the coated itself had any distinct flavour. Service was fine, atmosphere was kinda cool.
Omg so good! The food it's delicious! I went for the Sunday brunch and was a nice surprise. The plate is huge, but u don't feel stuff, just satisfied. Super recommend you to try ✨️ I already want to come back. The drinks are nice too, i order their ice tea and was very nice with something extra, and my friend order a orange juice with tangerine? And was nice too. Everything was great, the music lil too loud, but maybe this is normal?
What a delight! This place is not going to be for everyone. We wanted brunch for dinner, so it wasn't busy at all. There's lots of tables; it's the type of place where you know the food will be good because the tables are sticky. Our server's dry humor was hilarious. The front opens like a garage and it was a chilly night and we were quite cold - they didn't offer to close the doors. The food was delicious, I can't recommend the crispy crunchy French toast enough, the blueberry pancakes and hashbrowns were yummy as well. Everything was a large portion except the chicken and waffles, which was delicious regardless. My latte was amazing. If you don't like sweet bacon, don't order the sweet bacon. Overall if you want a cheap boring brunch spot where you're catered to like royalty this is not the place for you. We loved it.
The place set up is unique. I found the seating to be a bit crowded though. We waited quite awhile for our food which was the chicken and waffles. The menu is simple but found it to be way over priced. The meal was decent but nothing special. The texture of the waffles and chicken was well executed but flavour was not something I would be craving over and over. It was just ok for me.
Great concept and patio seating is comfortable. We went for lunch and seating in the fully shaded patio area. Food is good but not great. Price is on the high side but presentation is nice. The only complained we have is the bees constantly coming for the food. I see that the resteraunt has put traps but it just not working that well. Our server is friendly and polite. We will definitely go back another time to try other dishes.
School Brunch in Toronto offers a delightful, cozy spot for breakfast and brunch enthusiasts. With a modern, yet nostalgic vibe, the restaurant serves up creative dishes like fluffy pancakes, savory eggs Benedict, and unique avocado toasts. The menu is packed with options, from hearty sandwiches to fresh smoothies and specialty coffees. The attentive staff creates a welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect place to enjoy a leisurely meal. Whether youre in the mood for sweet or savory, School Brunch delivers quality, flavor, and a memorable dining experience that keeps guests coming back for more.
My favourite brunch spot in the city. Besides the food being amazing, the atmosphere and decor of this place is so cool. Every detail was thought out.
Best brunch in Toronto.
Overpriced and overrated
I recently visited this branch, and unfortunately, it was quite disappointing. I ordered pancakes, but they were dry and completely flavorless, as if no effort was put into making them. The service was extremely slow, and I had to wait a long time even though the place wasn t busy. On top of that, the minimum tip option was 20%, which doesn t make sense for an experience like this. Honestly, I don t think I ll be coming back to this location. I hope the management takes a closer look at improving the quality of their food and service.
Fantastic brunch options. You re definitely not coming here for healthy stuff, but the food that s filled with love and carbs. I can t believe I have only gone to this place once, but it won t be my last.
Favourite Brunch spot in the city and I always bring people from out of town here if I can. The chicken and waffles is my go to and the portion sizes are very generous. It s a popular spot so getting a spot is not always eas
This is the third year Ive come for lunch, this restaurant is one of my obligatory visits when Im in Toronto for work :) Food and service are good. The negative point for me was that I had to eat with my winter coat on, it was so cold. I hate being cold, especially in a restaurant, its very uncomfortable and ruins the experience, and the time I came to spend is completely ruined, I just want to go home and warm up. Reassure me that the heating will be on next time?!
A standout brunch spot in the city. Weekend lines can get a bit hectic, but worth the wait in my opinion. They re whipping up some heart food over here. Worth a shot in my opinion!
First time visiting School, and I won t lie, I was a bit sceptical since the reviews aren t super great, but honestly I have a great experience. Food was delicious and they accommodated the way I wanted coffee (which can be out of the ordinary for many ). I had the Safe Bet and it was truly delicious, it was exactly what I was looking for brunch. Perfect dish and reasonably price.
one of my favorite brunch spots in all of Toronto. the fried chicken and waffles are to die for. they also have health salad bowls available and solid coffee and cocktail options. #ContestEntry
Really great food but 7.50 for a chai latte is insane!!!
Inside of the restaurant is spacious and has good ambiance. Staff are friendly and attentive. My favorite is stacked buttermilk pancakes. Each dishes has good portion, so I like to share with friends as well. When my new friends are looking for nice brunch spot in Toronto, I always recommend SCHOOL:)
I had the Safe Bet plate - scrambled eggs were flat and dry, bacon was super fatty and not crispy enough, kale salad was good, hash browns were over salted, and the worst part was the tiny dry cheddar biscuit and doesnt include toast. Coffee was mediocre. Server was awesome. Would not recommend this place, seems the quality of food has gone down, and even at lunch time it wasnt busy. My friend had the French toast and it was mostly unflavoured bread.
What happened, friends! The food here used to be great. Went today and got weak coffee, dry food, and mediocre service from folks who didnt feel overly excited or inspired to be there. Really disappointed and honestly, its overpriced for what you get now.
Limited menu items Quite pricey Food
We had the best brunch here. Fantastic food, beautiful and really well crafted atmosphere, our server Nico was hilarious and attentive. Would definitely recommend! Very busy so make a reservation. But the most fun brunch atmosphere. Food
I looked at my food had a few bites and left
We had a very good brunch at School. For me the atmosphere stood out in first place this time - I loved a lot of details and books around we had a French toast with raspberry jam and The Safe Bet. Scrambled eggs and bacon were just as they should be, 10/10 to my taste! For the French toast it was really sweet, exceeded my expectations. So, if you try to control sugar intake - maybe choose other dish:) Overall, very satisfied with the experience, and the good 90 s music!
Probably some of the best French toast I have ever had.
The food was disappointing. Tried the blueberry pancakes and chicken waffles, both were overrated and lacked any standout flavor. The patio had a lot of bird poop, which made for an unpleasant dining experience. Service was inattentive, and it took a while to get anyone s attention. Not worth the visit.
Good food and vibe. Ordered soup and salad combo with side of fried chicken and it was exactly what I wanted and needed for dinner before concert. Absolutely delicious. Also drank black cherry lemonade with bourbon and ready to start my weekend. Will definitely come back for brunch.
Had a great experience at SCHOOL! Brunch and coffee were both amazing,
It was quick to get a table on a Sunday afternoon and the decor was accordance to their theme. But the food was very disappointing. Everyone at my table got something different and everyone was disappointed with their food. It was either under cooked or overcooked with small portions for the price or did not match the menu description. I got the golden hasbrown poutine that came to the table cold and with an under cooked egg. It came straight from the kitchen but tasted like it sat in a to go box for 30 mins and reheated. I didn t get a chance to pretend like I enjoyed my food because the server never came to check up on us.
Just OK. Too many bees, birds and insects inside. Food and coffee got too cold with the open concept seating area. Ratings would be higher without the above happening. Food
Food was okay. Egg portion was very small and they don t offer eggs on the side. The hot chocolate was very good. Birds, bugs, bees flying in our face even while side. Service waiter was a little cold towards
Pancake was good, definitely my favourite. I was surprised they don t let you purchase a side of eggs? I just finished a run and was hoping for more protein. Bacon was too sweet, not my thing. Lastly hot chocolate for $7.25 is quite pricey
I went for brunch and the music was as loud and as appropriate for a club. The server also misunderstood my coffee instructions twice so I ended up with less than a full glass. The french toast was delicious tho.
Was super hyped to finally try this place with my friend but was a bit disappointed. I will start off with the good, the cheesy french toast was so cheesy and so thick! The candied bacon was literally to die for! I could eat that everyday. The salad it came with was nothing extraordinary and was hard to pick up with a fork because it was almost like a chopped salad? The drinks were not bad, presentation was nice but I expected it to taste better for being $15-20 dollars. The apple crumble pancakes now .they were stodgy and gummy. The flavour and presentation were okay but the texture was a huge disappointment. Service was okay, it was busy but they were still nice. It did take awhile to find a server to help us get more water and the bill. In the middle of our meal, they opened the garage door which meant our indoor restaurant was now outdoor. It s the middle of october so it was kinda cold and our food got cold faster. Not to mention the bees kept trying to eat our food! The music was so loud too, I was trying to catch up with a friend and we were literally yelling over the music. Lastly, when we were paying, I felt really awkward because the server was just standing there and watching me click how much tip to give. I felt pressured to tap on their lowest option (20%!!) instead of customizing the amount to a more reasonable amount. I prefer if they turn away or even walk away and come back later. But also why is the lowest tip option 20%? Toronto is insaneeee
We had an awful experience the first and last time I went to this place. The service is horrible, their staff is one of the most unfriendly people I have met at a restaurant.
The staff are unfriendly, they don t appreciate their clients. Horrible service
Poor customer service, unfriendly staff, long waiting time. I asked a question to the server and he ignored me.
The people who work there are completely rude to customers, the food is good but the way you are treated is sad. We took some friends there and we were embarrassed by how they treated us.
Terrible staff. I asked for a table for 8 people, and the host said the wait would be 25 to 30 minutes and that he would send a message when the table was ready. Given the wait time, I asked to put my name on the list. After an hour and a half, we went to check on our table, and the host said there was nothing he could do because we were walk-in customers. He was completely rude and disrespectful. Long story short: I never received the message, and I ve never seen a restaurant do this. Total lack of respect for the customer.
Seldom will I talk poorly about an eating experience, but this was truly an off-putting experience. For a Sunday, they were either woefully understaffed or are simply just not interested in doing their jobs. We got seated in about 15 minutes, and despite being ready for 20 minutes, it took a while for the server to take our orders. We had two servers moving/handling our food, which was odd. We had ordered a side, never received it. My wife asked for cream for her coffee repeatedly before getting it. At no point did any of the staff try to check in or ask how the meal was going, but it felt like they actively avoided eye-contact. Had we been able to speak to them we could flag the issues with our food and items not being delivered. As for the food, we ordered the Synonym Toast, Golden Hashbrown Poutine and Mango Tangerine juice. The toast was nothing to write home about and despite being with two sweet breakfast lovers, we had to get it packed. It was a 6.5/10. The poutine was unnecessarily salty and overpowering. It felt as though they had not correctly measured the salt on every item and combined them with gravy that added additional salt. There was no layers of flavour, there was nothing to write home. Both poutine had about 40% of the plate left. 3/10. The juice was out of a minute maid carton, it was nothing special and not worth the $7.50. Overall, for nearly $100, I actually regret spending my money. Skip SCHOOL and go to OEB or Mildreds for a considerably better experience.
The brunch isnt bad at all, although the lemonade special they had was awful. There were a lot of wasps on the patio and in the restaurant which was a bit annoying but the reason I wont return is that the minimum tip prompt is 20%. They made a decision to get rid of the 18% option so Im making the decision not to go back.
Food was alright, the steak wasnt medium rare though it was like well done lol and seemed smaller than 6oz it still tasted good. Lemonade was really good and so was the french toast main concern was no air conditioning in the 30 degree weather and its basically like an outdoor restaurant. Service was good though
Come here if you just want to wait forever to get seated. Waited for the host to get the table ready for 20 mins with no people waiting ahead of us(with empty tables in the patio). The host just wandered around, not doing anything, clearly showing no interest in what s going on around him. After we asked once again what exactly were waiting waiting for he said we need to wipe the table, and yes, it takes time, so just wait (I guess it takes half an hour to do that, so we just left) Maybe you need some other person to greet people and have them feel a bit more welcome.
Good food and presentation and the concept is fun! Definitely not for summers; we battled bees and insects the whole meal and finally a bee literally came into our food and we had to be asked to be moved. Plus it was too hot with no fans.
A very good restaurant with pleasant staff and delicious food. Their Safe Bet is really safe and worth the cost. Dietary restrictions: The waiter asked me if I had any allergies or dietary restrictions, which means they really consider this detail. Parking: Its usually easy to find a spot.
The place is cool. Lots of patio area, one of them seems to be inside a garden which is beautiful. I thought they don t quite have a lots of options to order, but they seem to care for creativity and flavour. The portions are from medium to big, apparently depending on what you order. I had their chicken with waffles and it was a medium portion. The chicken was very good and the sauce on the side made a diference as well. Good place for a date I would say or to go with friends and family. Location is far from me, but I would recommend for anyone that want to try something different specially if you are in the area. Service is good. Lots of parking available either on the street or the big parking lot on from of it. Parking: You can park on the street in front of it. And in front of the place there is a big paid parking lot as well. Could not find free parking anywhere close by.
Chill vibes... If youre working here. If youre a customer, be prepared to wait - even if there are empty tables. We waited 30 mins only to be seated at an empty patio table which was occupied by a larger group waiting for a table. The back of the establishment had tables but was kept closed... for Im not sure what reason... especially when there were multiple groups waiting. The host literally made himself a coffee and walked around nonchalant, while you could see people getting impatient (including us). If you can get past that, then the food is actually decent. The safe bet is really good - especially the crispy potatoes. Unfortunately, the poor experience and service could not be overlooked. To management: its all about perception. Staff need to be trained better from a customer service perspective... Unless its not something you value.
So expensive and simple food ...just fancy place!
Cool place to visit and the food was delicious!
Fun theming of a brunch restaurant. The beakers for cups/water pitchers was a cool touch. Got a side of potato hash and they were great! Crispy and seasoned well. The small chunks of potato in the hash crisped up to the perfect texture. The tuna melt was a bit surprising, as it was more of an open face sandwich style. The whole grain mustard layered within and large diced chunks of crunchy pickles balanced the richness of the tuna and cheese. I think a bit smaller dice on the pickles and onion mixed in the tuna mixture would further improve the texture of the sandwich. Vanilla latte was extremely sweet - I was unable to finish as it was too overwhelming. They could ve cut the sweetness by half.
Consistent food, great service, recommendations and great taste
Walked in and was waiting to be seated for a few minutes but it seemed as though there were no staff around. After seeing a cockroach walk across the bar counter we left. After reading many other reviews it looks like there is a trend of poor customer service. Whoever operates this place needs to look into replacing the hostess and servers, as well as having an inspection done before being shut down by dinesafe. Avoid this establishment before paying for parking folks.
10/10 Definitely coming back again! OH my heart felt every bite lol, food was amazing
Had dinner before a concert an Ontario Place. Food was great fried chicken sandwich and cauliflower bowl. Service was good and very cool vibe in the restaurant.
Great food and lovely atmosphere!
Had brunch here, got the chicken and waffles. They were so good! Cool little restaurant, nice atmosphere, definitely recommended to many others.
Really bad service, staff do not communicate, they just plopped the menu on the table and left, and whenever they were asking people how the food is and if they needed anything , the waitress stopped and looked at our table then left, she did not even ask.i dont know if they are being racist towards us or all the staff are having a bad day but they ruined the experience. The food was good, but not worth it if the service is bad . I dont recommend. Also their cups were gross , full of stains and was flipped on a dirty table..
I dont know where to begin. This place is so awkward. First there is edm music, Im not sure if they realize that most people are at Sunday brunch because they are hungover or to chat with family and friends, loud edm at breakfast isnt it. You dont get acknowledged at the host stand until they are done chatting with coworkers and come to you. The server lets us know that theres no modifications allowed, that you should be eating their chefs intended creation. Ok fine, but theres so much put into your dishes thats not ingredients listed on the menu. Be sure to tell them everything you dont like because there will be hidden ingredients like onions and A LOAD of black pepper in the eggs, Tomato on the mixed greens etc. Our table was woobly by a good inch or more, it was very woobly. We asked a random server for napkins to put under as we didnt see our own server. This server says ok but goes to do a few other things acting like he just ignored our request. So I grab the napkin from the table next to me and made the table stable. Then after were happy with the table the server comes and goes Im going to fix it, I said its good like this, he says no let me do it. He made it back to woobly and the waters went all over the table when he switched it back to woobly. Side plates. We asked for side plates as we were going to share. The plates brought to us were nothing less than a joke. Ive never seen any other restaurant give me plates this scratched up and unpleasant in my life. I have attached a photo. I asked the server if the manager was aware these plates were being sent to customers and he said yes, its just a few scratch marks. This is just bad business when its $25 a plate for breakfast. Even 50s diners dont serve you plates like that. Food: my chive biscuit was tiny and so burnt, I asked if it was normal as I wanted a different one and he said yes this is how they are. I honestly wish I took a picture of the food but I didnt. The apple pancakes were the worst Ive ever had. They were a rock. Couldnt even cut them. We didnt eat most of that entire dish. Do NOT order pancakes here. Just wow. And please stop dumping an entire black pepper shaker into your eggs, it was an overpowering amount. I was eyeing the bacon grilled cheese but its such an awkward place, I wont be back to try it. I went on google reviews and noticed theres tons of people who had a similar experience to me. So I guess its a management issue overall as these similar reviews have been saying this for years. I guess in good news, we left here laughing because we just couldnt believe how weird our experience was, we laughed the whole walk home.
Took them sometime to greet or even acknowledge us; once they did, service was a breeze! Food was good but for the price, the portions were small. Asked for a blended drink, came with ice ...un-blended and the girl was a bit pissy because I didnt want it...overal, it was a cool birthday breakfast!!!
Friendly service but it s an open air restaurant so be prepared to withstand the heat on a hot day. Was disappointed we could order the sliders they were serving to a private party.
The service was disappointing. We had to repeatedly ask for things, and the waiter often forgot our requests. He didnt check up on us, and when we tried to get his attention, he didnt respond. Overall, he seemed unhappy and unwelcoming.the pancakes were not good at all over cooked pancakes and the glass cups and table were all dirty don t recommend at all
Worst pancakes I have had till date! We ordered the Chicken Waffles, hashbrowns and pancakes. They were all highly disappointing! We had gone there seeing pictures on Instagram and some reviews online, but sad to say the pancakes were very dry and rubbery (opposite of how pancakes should be!) waffle chicken was a 6/10. Place is not worth the hype. We conveyed our disappointment to the waitress about the pancakes and she didn t do anything about it.
Must go place in Toronto. Food is always good, great atmosphere and service never disappoints. If it s your first time, either get the Tuna Melt, Flapjacks or the Chicken & Waffles, you will not be disappointed.
Not a bad stop for a weekday brunch. No wait, we got seated right away on a Friday morning around 1130. Cheesy french toast is quite cheesy, theyre not kidding. Latte was good as well. The side salad was a tad on the bitter side. Not a bad spot.
Service was not great, we had a large party so tip was automatically included, that s probably why. When it was my turn to order a drink she just said no drink here little weird since I was waiting my turn to order a cider. Food looked good except for the poutine I ordered, the hash browns were mashed potato, pretty bland. Finally flagged someone down for hot sauce when people were half done.
Food was delicious, service was quick and friendly and the atmosphere was great.
Food was good, but burger was burnt and sweet dishes are very sweet. No AC, but cool venue. Service was below par
What a delightful restaurant ( the outdoor patio is exquisite with the gardens and plants!) The staff was kind and laid back staff who were very pleasant in answering our questions regarding the menu, serving the food etc. The food was delicious...
Delicious food with generous portions! Came here for a birthday dinner the service was excellent and the atmosphere was delightful! who doesn t love all-day brunch?
Excellent food
It was a good experience; the place was cozy, and we enjoyed a great brunch. We will definitely visit this place again.
Just dropped in for a quick visit and bite, service was excellent but food was a tad salty and salad was sad
Hup Holland Hup! Incredible & fabulous experience for all things Dutch & celebrations!!! Wonderful ambiance with equally matched customer service and hospitality! Enjoy the indoor seating with an array of tables to enjoy views of the several TV screens & covered outside patio or opt for the backyard tented seating area with outdoor TV screens, barbecues & picnic table all under the magical outdoor lighting. Want to chill? Check out the bar area with a quaint nook to watch a game on their private TV screen. And be ready to be enticed with their menu and the food delights! Shout out to the chef for his stellar dishes! Everything looked delicious but my war fries were amazing! Public parking across the street and easily accessible. Hope to be part of the fun again on Wednesday! Hup Holland Hup!
Final Grade: A Walking in, seeing little details of a class room in a restaurant is always a fun way to catch peoples attention. Especially each and every table had a small metal plate with a fresh apple, nostalgic. Their portions are massive which is always a plus! We ordered Super Cheesy French toast and chicken and waffles. One thing we wished they would accommodate was the temperature. It was heat wave and we wanted to go into a restaurant that had the option of sitting inside (to get away from the heat) or patio. The time we came, the restaurant opened up all the windows so it very hot and humid. Other than that, I will definitely be back and try their blueberry pancakes !
Overall was really good, the only thing I didn t understand is why they can t do changes or add things to orders like add two extra eggs to the safe bet.
We enjoyed our brunch here. Drinks are kinda expensive. But pancakes, bacon, French toast, fried chicken and hashbrown poutine were all a hit. And sangria was delicious!
Don t look at the cook while they are making your food. Food was dropping everywhere and the guy was just putting it back on the plate. I guess little dirty make the food tasty Las Vegas chicken waffle is 10x better I guess for Toronto it s ok. Not a bad place for brunch. Again don t look at the kitchen area. lol
My go to place for chicken and waffles. The pancakes slap
Apparently loud music is part of their brand. I prefer hearing my friend across the table. Dietary restrictions: No substitutions allowed
School has so many wins. Best caesar cocktail in the city (comes with bacon). Amazing sweet and savoury brunch options. Unreal vibes. Dog friendly patio.
Poor menu, you can t do any customization, no wonder why not busy on sundays for brunch
Great everything except the noise level. They are really doing the food a disservice by blasting 2010s pop hits at a volume that makes conversation impossible without yelling.
I have been here a few times and suggested this place to a friend whos visiting. Well she went and took her daughter who has dietary restrictions. They had a horrendous experience, service was meh and they served the daughter a gluten free burger.... without the gluten free bun and tried to charge them for it. Im so disappointed in the 1st impression made. Dietary restrictions: Asked for a gluten-free bun for burger and was given a bun-less burger ....doesnt compute #disappointed
This restaurant was a good experience. The place itself is a bit small and your tables are close to others, but they make what they have work. The wait can be a bit long if you dont get there at a good time, but the food is worth it, great brunch spot, high quality food. Would definitely go back. If you drive it can be hard to find parking, but if you plan well, you will have a good experience. Staff is great and polite, and the coffee is good as well.
Delicious food, excellent service, and a comfortable atmosphere with a lot of fun school details.
Absolutely unacceptable to sell a mediocre tuna melt for 27.00 PLUS tip to go. With a side salad that would fit in the palm of your hand. ONE piece open faced with a tiny salad for 35.00 bucks. Shame on this place. I would not eat it. I let them take my money and said I would rather eat my 35 bucks.
Food is a 5, Atmosphere is a 1. You cant hear yourself think because of the loud music, let alone talk to your friends...which you presumably want to do when you go for brunch. Every time I go, I ask them to lower the music slightly. They never do. It is infuriating.
Absolutely my favorite! Travelled from the other part of the city because I was craving their blueberry pancakes! Very friendly staff. From experience I knew weekends have really long wait lines and no reservations is possible so I went during week days. Their patio is really nice! Oh! Before pouring maple syrup all over the pancakes try for sweetness because the blueberry compote is already very sweet
Food is ok, vibe ok, washrooms absolutely disgusting.
Delicious food and great friendly service. We tried the peach and raspberry French toast, super cheesy with bacon french toast and the chicken and waffles. They were all perfect, the sauce for the chicken and waffles made it 5 times better. Recommend this place for a quick bite to eat for brunch and would love to try it for dinner!
I would say the food and atmosphere is exceptional. I ordered the chicken & waffles - the protein was cooked perfectly, waffles delicious, and the hot honey sauce very tasty. They also provided me with a shot of maple syrup at no extra charge. Portion sizes are what you d predict for a quaint café/bakery style Toronto brunch spot: on the smaller side but still reasonable given the prime location. The prices are quite steep (nearly $7 for a little cappuccino) but honestly for Liberty Village, what do you expect Only negative I could say is the service could have been a bit more prompt - the food came fast but I would have liked the water glasses to be replenished quicker but all around it was a fantastic experience. Would highly reccommend. 4/5 stars
for a Sunday, the music is very loud. we asked them to reduce the volume but they said no. the staff is unpleasant and refuses any request from us.
My favorite brunch location in Toronto.
Excellent food, fun atmosphere, not a long wait, and ther services is good overall. Definitely worth it. I plan to go again and highly recommend. The chicken and waffles are a must try. Some vegan and vegetarian options available as well. Check out my IG @ryanfics for detailed reviews, pictures, and excellent suggestions about places to eat in and around the GTA.
Just left School and it was chef kiss ! love a man who can cook delicious food
Great service plus delicious food
Fantastic food, nice servers and I liked the vibe of the place. I would love to come back!
Everything was wonderful!!
As reflected by other reviews, the food is delicious. However, they are oddly rigid with customization requests. More flexibility would be appreciated with the exorbitant prices. $8 for a hot chocolate is substantially higher than nearby restaurants, and $21 for two eggs and hashbrowns is insane. For these prices you might expect resounding service. Yet, overall, the service was cold and indifferent.
26$ before tax or tip for 3/4 of a waffle and 3 pieces of dry chicken. And then they suggest a 20,25 or 30% tip. Over priced mediocre food.
Last week my friend and I thought wed try School as we heard good things about it. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet expectations. I ordered the stacked flapjacks. The blueberry compote was beyond sweet. It tasted like a mouthful of powdered sugar. Which was also dusted on top. I was hoping to balance it out with some savoury bacon. But thats not an option since they only have candied bacon. Wonderful, sugar on top of sugar. The music was so loud I barely heard what the hostess said to me. When I asked if there were any chance lowering it she said unlikely, but shell ask her manager. I watched her speak to the manager, who looked my way and simply shook his head and laughed. Apparently I went clubbing at 11am instead of brunch. Hostess didnt bother to come back to us and avoided eye contact with me for the rest of my time there. I was only able to finish half of my food before my teeth felt like it needed a dental cleaning. We left with our ears ringing, still hungry, and never to return. Ive already told my group of friends not to bother with School if they want a nice atmosphere to meet up for brunch and catch up. This place may be called School, but it seems like they need lessons on customer service and how to balance a dietary palate.
Food amazing the salad was so delicious. I really recommend this place
Stopped by School to meet friends for a weekend brunch. This place is a staple in Liberty Village with its industrial interior and charming greenery patio with red tables. The service was efficient and friendly. We had the Super Cheesy Bacon French Toast and the Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Waffles. The French toast was indeed super cheesy, making it very savoury. The chicken and waffles, mixed with maple syrup, created a delightful sweet and savoury combo. A latte rounded out the meal perfectly. Overall, a great brunch spot in Liberty Village. Highly recommended!
Finally went here for the first time, was not disappointed at all, great food and great service wish they were open longer though:)
The music was way too loud and not good with the atmosphere. The food quantity was small portions and basic for the prices. Service was slow service and not attentive.
The theme for this place is cute, but I was not impressed with the food. We got the warm cauliflower bowl (one of the only 3 vegan options) and the rice was flavourless, chickpeas were flavourless, pickled cabbage was just chopped dry cabbage. The hashbrowns we got on the side were fine but there were lots of charred bits hidden at the bottom. There was only one server working that day so service was very sparse. Felt like I had to wait for him to not be busy just to ask for my bill. Not really his fault at all, just should have staffed more people for how busy it was at the time. Probably won t be coming back. Please take that cauliflower bowl off the menu.
Had an excellent brunch at SCHOOL. The interior is very cute and has a really relaxed atmosphere. We had the black and blue pancakes and they were absolutely delicious. Some of the best weve ever had. All the servers were very friendly and overall it was a very positive experience.
Great atmosphere and food was good! Would recommend if you like good music, good food and a fun time.
Got seated in about 30 minutes during afternoon brunch hour BUTTTTT. It was welll worth it ! Amazing menu, staff, atmosphere ! Can t go wrong with this restaurant. Cool/hip / 90s theme.
Good food. Just about adequate service. Borderline rude waitress. Insane tipping expectations. The machine options were 20% 25% 30%. The French toast was pillowy & soft. The hash brown poutine very flavorful. Make sure to get some hot sauce extra with the Chicken & Waffles. Orange & Grapefruit juice were fresh, but were a small serve. Insanely rigid. All that I wanted was bacon to be served on the side of the Safe Bet. I was told we can either substitute or take it off. Cant serve it on the side deconstructed. It was not like I was asking for a different recipe, just put it on a side plate instead of the main plate. Insanely loud music. As loud as a nightclub. When asked about it, was told its our vibe. What is ? Being loud & obnoxious ?
Comfort food, good vibe
I recently booked out the entire space for a birthday celebration. I paid thousands of dollars to ensure 80 people were fed. The vegetable platter that was made available was in the centre of the room and felt like it was made for a small group, hardly any finger foods were passed around by wait staff (it was clear that they did not properly staff the function), and several of my guests shared that they did not receive any of the mains (pad thai and fish and chips). With respect to drinks, several of my guests do not drink alcohol including myself and so, in advance of the party, I ordered and paid for a signature mocktail to be made; for my part, I had one of the mocktails only because they ran out of mix and had to therefore resort to gingerale for the remainder of the evening. There were several other issues, and not enough hours in the day for me to write them out. Finally, the event planner that the venue used and/or uses--Lets Party Consultants--I would not recommend. Attempts to connect with the planner about the various issues following the event was met with absolute silence. All this tells me is they got the money and felt it was okay to ignore my follow-up. All very disappointing and put a cloud over what was supposed to be a joyous occasion!
Arrived at 1pm on a stat holiday and waited for about 30 mins before being seated. Heads-up, there s nowhere to put down your name, you just line up. There s also no signage of this procedure, so if you walk right in to even take a peek, people will just give you the death glare *shrug* Hot tip: There s limited space to wait indoors. Good luck if the weather is yucky. Because we waited so long, we always knew what we wanted to order. But the server said she ll come back to take our order even though we were ready. Food takes about 20 mins to arrive after ordering. We got: Coffee -meh, nothing special. Almond or soy milk +$1. Raw sugar on the side. Lemonade -got Lychee Pear flavoured. Flavour was good, but portion was not. Not worth $7 in my opinion. Buttermilk fried chicken and waffles: 4.5/5 -chicken was tender yet crispy, waffles were soft but not soggy. Sauce was great! Wish it came with a small side of salad or something green. Golden Hashbrown Poutine: 4.5/5 doesn t come with any meat, gotta add/pay extra if you want. It was VERY cheesy, flavour was awesome, wish it had more of the tomato - needed more acidity to help cut the cheesiness and salty gravy. Bacon Cheddar Burger: 4/5 -a good burger, nothing special but it wasn t terrible. Super Cheesy Bacon French Toast: 4/5 -dish name is true, it was veryyy cheesy. It was already really flavourful without the maple syrup, so taste before just drowning it! Be prepared to be shouting your conversation. Saying the music is LOUD is an understatement - especially in the farther/smaller room. When they bring the POS machine for payment, the three default options for tips are 20%, 25%, 30%. HA HA! No. *clicks other* 15% is plenty. Server didn t even check on us to ask if the food was alright. May or may not be back in the future. We ll have to wait and see. Parking: There s some street parking in front of the restaurant entrance (Fraser St). Or down the street is $4/hr
Food was decent and portions were good but serving staff were very curt and rude. The music was also much too loud. Had to yell over the table just to have a conversation.
Decent food. Though breakfast options are limited. No omelette! Service is ok but dry. The crew is perhaps unfriendly. No smiles. No welcoming attitude. All business like. They could loosen up a bit. Paid parking is the only option. Food : 4/5
I ordered veggie burger and it had no salt.. , didnt like the food.fries were burnt and without salt.
The vibe is unique and amazing. Staff are very nice even though they are absolutely busy. The menu is very limited but great taste and portion size. There are not much cafes with identity in Downtown Toronto but this is one of the spots that you will always remember!
Food is really tasty but the drink portion is abysmal. The super cheesy bacon french toast was really decadent, though I wish it came with more bacon. I liked that it came with a side salad to balance out the greasiness. The pancakes are also super decadent and great if youre into pancakes. I got a pear lychee lemonade and was super disappointed by how tiny it was for $7.50! Its literally less than 250ml. Flavour was just ok. Also dont bother with the cocktail version of this lemonade - its much more expensive for a similar or even smaller portion (I saw another table order it). Service was fine. Tip options start at 20% which is just silly. Im not tipping 20% unless someone does an amazing job.
A solid breakfast place. Their pancakes and coffee are my favourites. The chicken and waffles are a close second. A bit busy on the weekends but that s a good sign. Just make sure you get there close to opening time to get seated quickly.
Highly recommend the buttermilk fried chicken and waffles w/ house hot honey sauce...so good!
School was recommended to me by a local and boy am I glad it was. The place was so inviting. Someone was very witty and clever with the decorating and naming of the menu choices which is something I absolutely enjoy, respect and appreciate. I loved the quiet sit down environment with the outstanding customer service. And as if that wasnt enough to give cudos about, the food was heavenly. I was so thankful that this was suggested to me while in town.
Love this place.
The atmosphere is good. I always eat waffle chicken and blueberry pancakes. Its delicious and the service is also good.
Ive been to School quite a few times. I have no issues with their food. Its all very tasty and I would come back just for that. My issue this time around is that they have music BLASTING to the point you cant even hear the guests youre there with unless youre yelling. In addition, I asked the for the music to be turned down just a SMIDGE because one of my guest is deaf in one ear and I dont want them to be isolated from a group convo. As a person with no hearing issues, even I had trouble hearing the people across from me and my ears were ringing from how loud the music was. They declined my request to turn it down a knotch because the loud blasting music is a part of their brand. Youre still a restaurant at the end of the day, not a night club. You customer come as a group to eat and socialize. Im sure most would like to hear each other especially during brunch time. I was not asking for unreasonable accommodation and something about turning down this request when my guest has a hearing disability seems not right. Overall this put a damper on a perfectly sufficient service.
Good food and good lemonade :) I loved tasting different berries from the lemonade. The cheese bread and salad was amazing
Went for a Saturday morning brunch. Food overall was really good and unique. However, the music was so loud that we could not speak to each other at the table. We heard multiple other tables ask to have it turned down slightly and the server said it is the standard volume. We also made the request and heard the the same thing. Overall, the atmosphere was ruined by the music.
School restaurant offers a distinctive old-school atmosphere, but the food could be better overall. The Health 101 bowl stands out as a good, healthy option on the menu.
Visited here with no particular expectations, drawn by the allure of Liberty Village. Took a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood and serendipitously found this gem. The ambiance captivated me instantly; however, the service was nearly absent, though it afforded me ample space to savor my meal. Opted for the pancakes, and they unequivocally stood out as some of the finest Ive ever tasted. Delightfully light, irresistibly fluffy, yet bursting with flavor. Without a doubt, Ill be returning.
Cozy atmosphere, friendly and fast service - and the best pancakes I have ever had....I will be dreaming about these.
We were lucky enough to get in without having to wait. It was our first time during our fast weekend visit to a relative and I cant wait to go again.
Came here on a Sunday for brunch and was relieved we didn t have to wait. Service was excellent, but food was underwhelming. Had the chicken and waffles but it was very bland. Food
Great brunch place. Not many options for kids and their policy of no substitutions is a little exagerated.
One of the best brekky spots in all of Toronto
Love the cheesy french toast
Loved the French toast! Highly recommended. Definitely sweet enough without syrup if you get the compote.
Very good vibe, good coffee and food. The chicken and waffles were great, soft waffles, crispy well cooked and seasoned chicken. The hashbrowns were great. The only thing I was kind of disappointed about was the pancakes. They looked soooo good but honestly they were too thick and cakey instead of light and fluffy. They looked great but the texture was just off. Also the toppings were way too sweet. It definitely needed something acidic. I hope they fix the batter and maybe add a Raspberry sauce to balance the sweetness. Or something similar. Service was great, our waitress so very helpful. Place was clean and we were very fortunate we got there just before the rush so no wait.
The coffee was not great and I got the blueberry pancakes which were quite dense and kind of bland overall. The atmosphere was cool and my friend said the breakfast poutine was good.
Best school
Love coming here. The food is fresh and delicious. The staff also adds to the overall experience, in a good way!
Good food, great service but very overpriced. $25 for a breakfast egg and salad dish is a stretch
My first visit to School was for the Fried Chicken and Waffle and boy was it good, but my second trip was for the Blueberry Flapjacks and brunch mimosas. I took my family here during the Winter holidays. I love how School is always ready with a seasonal menu that changes. Trendy area with lots of young people and visitors from out of town. Lots of seating options for big parties up to 8 and small couples of two. The kitchen is fast and the service is excellent. A must visit brunch when youre in Liberty Village during Winter Parking: Street Parking is free on Sundays before 1PM. Kid-friendliness: Kid friendly inside.
My wife had originally wanted to go to School months ago. This Sunday, we took the train in and made our way to a restaurant in the area. The wait time was well over an area. As we sat there, I noticed that School was nearby. Hey, isnt that where you wanted to go before? Its only an eight minute walk from here. Want to go there, instead? We did, and boy am I glad. Though we had to wait there, too, it was worth it. The food was decadent, their maple latte is unbelievable and Amy, our server, was great even though she was busy. We absolutely have to go back because there are other things we want to try, but we need to give our waistline a break. So you at School!
I saw the pancakes on IG and definitely I had to go to try it !! omg !!! Are delicious .. but in other things their menu is very American, they dont have much variety on it, but I definitely come back for the blueberry pancakes!
Delicious food and very friendly service!
Been here many times and the food never disappoints! Their fried chicken is the best I ve had in the city. Their sweeter options on the menu are an absolute delight as well!
I appreciated the quality of the food at the school restaurant; however, Id like to share an observation regarding the service. While enjoying our coffee, the server began cleaning our table without a polite acknowledgment or excuse me. A bit more courtesy in such situations would enhance the overall dining experience. Despite this, the delicious food remains a highlight of our visit.
Amazing foods! Very yummy
Little loud, but the safe bet was a good portion size, and delicious.
Where to begin...music is extremely loud, especially for a brunch place at 11am. We asked if they could turn it down and the response was its our brand, we cant?? Its your brand to make people yell to have a conversation? The food options are very limited and nothing is appealing. I had a burger and fries since its difficult to mess that up... But they found a way lol. The fries were hard and stiff. The burger was edible at best. First and last time Ill come here. The server saw my fries were barely touched and didnt question why...clearly nobody cares. For some reason its a busy place. Not sure why. Very disappointed
Amazing breakfast place. Its been around for years, and its always held up. My favorite spot in Toronto.
Love this place great food and great vibe, great variety of food , favorite thing on the menu is chicken and waffles and you definitely have to try their spicy caesar
Been going here a lot for the past few months and the food is great, but the last time we went here is a bit disappointing. We didn t finish our food and ask for a to go box, after we left we forgot our food after realizing we went back right away it s less than five minutes when we ask about the food they said they already threw out the food. What a waste of food and money.
The chicken and waffles were off the charts. Super friendly servers and a very comfortable and stylish decor and vibe. Just in Toronto for a long weekend, but of all the great places I ate, this was by far my favourite.
Food was over priced and portions were small. Tipping options shouldn t be 25 and 30% for mediocre service. Won t be coming back.
As the name suggests, the palate of the menu is catered to youth. Unfortunately, the food is not fresh, making it overpriced. If you re a fan of sugar for breakfast, I recommend having a bowl of Fruit Loops, save your $.
Amazing food! The only problem is the waiting line. I waited for 1 full hour to get a table. Its 2033, start taking reservations please.
The breakfast was good, service was pretty quick and the waitress was kind. I had the French toast and they were tasty. The prices are a bit high for the food but overall still good
Kale ceaser, fried chicken, and hot sauce. Cant beat it.
1) Great interior design/ ambience/ atmosphere 2) pancakes were just okay 3) honey glazed bacon was on fire, arguably the best part of the meal Food : 3/5
The School is nice place to go on date or for a casual dining experience. The buttermilk chicken was well seasoned and tasty, the waffles was great. The chickpea veggie burger was good taste freshly made. It is definitely worth going back again.
I love School Restaurant in Liberty. The staff is always friendly, and the food is consistently delicious. Their pancakes are a must-try for brunch. Its my go-to spot for a great brunch in the area.
Horrible experience! We waited over an hour to get a table (thats still fine as we knew from before that the place would be super busy). However, the brunch was NOT AT ALL worth the wait. Pancakes were super, super dry! Food
Great place for breakfast/ brunch! Love the service, vibe and the food. We love the blueberry pancakes and the cheese and bacon Frenchtoast. A little overpriced and a long wait if you visit on the weekend.
our go to brunch spot in liberty. Usually busy so come early, but its deff worth it and the chicken and waffles are to die for. They also have good weekday brunch options and its usually less busy.
Today we visited the restaurant, since we arrived it took about 15 minutes to give us a table and the restaurant was empty, there were only 2 tables occupied, so I dont know why it took so long, then the service was terrible, the waiter took a while to take the order, I asked for a coffee and they didnt even offer us sugar, the food took too long and there was no one else in the restaurant, it was my first time visiting the place based on a recommendation, but I wont go again. The food was ok, it wasnt wonderful, to compensate for the bad service
Went there on Sunday Nov 19 at 1pm. They had a show starting at 1.45 pm and told us that we have to leave by then. Took them 30 min to get our food. When we weren t done eating by 1.45 pm we wanted the leftovers for take away, but when I got back from the bathroom a pretty rude waiter had thrown away my box with the leftovers. He offered to redo my food but we would have to wait outside in the cold. Pretty bizarre and unpleasant experience.
I ordered The Safe Bet but left unsatisfied and hungry. The portion size was absurdly small; and that s coming from someone that is a light eater. The eggs were only half the size of my palm, and the hash browns amounted to about 1/8 of a cup essentially deep-fried air. When I asked for more, I was informed there would be an extra charge. I wont be returning soon, but if I do, I would only choose one of their sweet breakfast items for better value and a fuller meal. Our waitress made a very weird comment about allergies. When we said we didn t have any allergies she replied saying, I guess we ll see! in a non-sarcastic way. Giving 3 stars solely for the delicious pancakes.
Honestly, the best breakfast I ve ever had and I m a French toast and pancake gal.. let me tell you, this is next level! I also liked that they have different movies playing like Jurassic park the menu is 11/10, vibes all the same.
Tables could be a bit more clean... Food takes 20 to 25 minutes to arrive. I might give another shot there... Food : 4/5
The place looks very cool and gives you a nice industrial vibe. But there is nothing special about the food and service. It is good! (no wow moment). Prep yourself to stand in a long line up :).
Service was perfect but the place wasn t as good as expected. We saw this place in some list of best Toronto s brunch restaurants but it was not enough. The menu has not too many options and somenthing really disappoointing was the fact of not being able to order Eggs as a side when it is supposed that Eggs are usually a main ingredient in brunch s menus.
Called over 10 times to make an order for pickup for my girlfriend s surprise birthday brunch and they never answer their phones :( very disappointed
Walked in, sat down, and left because their one and only server (also serving us), was visibly quite sick. Its disrespectful to the people youre serving to allow staff to be coughing and sneezing all over everything in the restaurant. Have we learned nothing from the pandemic? If youre sick, stay home.
WORST brunch place I ve ever been. The blueberry pancakes were doughy and artificially sweet. The chicken waffle was dry and lack flavor. Our waitress Chyna did not provide any service at all (didn t even come add water once). When she saw that I only tipped her 10%, she didn t even say goodbye or thank you. We also waited 5 mins for a table when there were several tables empty and available. Overall the employees lack passion and do not seem to wanna serve their customers. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Overpriced and overrated.
Rather disappointing experience here. This place is seriously overhyped as the wait time was around 40 minutes and people continued to pour in for this Saturday brunch. This restaurant has more of a bar vibe than it does a classic dining spot. Decor and concept is cool but the music is blaring so loud I ended up with a pulsing headache by the end of my meal (it didn t help that we were sat directly under a speaker). Whoever was in charge of this playlist clearly lacked taste in music as they had 2010s club songs from the likes of Pitbull, Kesha, LMFAO on a cycle (the worst era of music in recent memory). Food came out rather subpar. I ordered the hashbrown poutine which was served with a side of salsa and fried egg. The texture of the potatoes were wildly inconsistent; some bites felt like mash, others runny from the gravy and the rest were hard solid chunks. It was served with low quality cheese that tasted store bought.. with an artificial rubbery chewy texture I did not enjoy. However, my wife ordered the blueberry flapjacks that were quite nice. In terms of menu offering, if you re looking for classic brunch items like eggs bennys or hash browns, you won t find that here. Price is also on the expensive side considering the quality of food we had this day. The hashbrown poutine is essentially a protein-less all potato dish costing $23 (this is without meat!). All in all we probably waited in line longer than we were dining, as again the loud music was truly excruciating. I m sounding like a grumpy old man at this point but really who needs to hear party rock first thing on a calm December Saturday morning. Lean into the Christmas vibes, not frosh week circa 2010 lol.
Food is good but don t see the value for its price. Service can definitely be improved; because of the demand and small capacity, I can see why the staff can be overwhelmed, but when you are charging that much, you definitely expect more.
I went for a business breakfast, and the food and service and location were truly excellent, the only small criticism I have is that inside the restaurant itself with just a tiny little bit cold. But everything else was outstanding Vegetarian options: My associate had vegetarian considerations and was quite happy with the selection available
Great local business! The food was awesome, I got a Krampus Burger. Nice attention to detail and the server was very pleasant. One of the little things that I enjoyed was the cloth napkins instead of paper ones.
