First time for Burmese and I was pleasantly surprised. Food was fresh and flavours were not overpowering. The tea leaf salad was surprisingly spicy while the papaya salad was refreshing. Tea leaf fried rice was sublime, delicious and the colours were spring like vibrant, this was my favourite dish (along with the fish curry). Dragon chicken has a kick and the pad Thai was simple but classic, I appreciate that it was not drowning in sauce. Village fish curry mixes well with the coconut jasmine rice. The Thai cheesecake was a bit cold and felt a little too frozen but a nice ending to a memorable first Burmese meal. The various teas paired well with dinner on a cold night. The restaurant was clean, simple table arrangement, and the staff were friendly and courteous. Great value meal given the area it resides in, I highly recommend this restaurant.

The most delicious lunch! The wait staff was so helpful in recommending tea and meal choices. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere was really lovely. It did not feel like this was a mall restaurant.

Overall the food was tasty and our server Jaswon was really courteous. We ordered Chicken Rangoon, Burmese garlic noodle, Paratha and vegetable dishes which we all enjoyed. However we were disappointed with the parathas, it could have been better.

Delicious vegan options and thoughtful allergens consideration in the menu. The vegan khow Suey, Burmese Falafel, tea salad and samuza so well spiced, and each dish was bursting with flavors. Loved the little condiments that khow suey came with and the little sauces as well.

I dined at Popa in August of 2024 along with some colleagues. The restaurant was recommended to me by another colleague, who had thoroughly enjoyed the food. The restaurant is inside the mall and not visible from outside (which may be the only downside, although not a big issue). There was enough seating capacity, the ambience was pleasant and the service good. Everything we ordered was Delish and came rather quickly. The pricing is reasonable and we had a great experience. Looking forward to visiting again with my family.

Delicious food , I had a bowl of NAN GYI THOKE KHOW SUEY and Burmese frid rice. Know suey was similar to Northern Thailand dish called Khao soi (special dish in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai) . It was full of coconut milk flavore in the broth. Broth was thick and yellow. Comes with 6 small dishes with Garnish. Burmese fried rice was so so, disappointed. They used the Jasmine rice, but I don't taste any flavor. Should fried in hot temperature and fired rice should have the Wok Hay . Overall, I recommend this restaurant to experience south east taste. Personal experience in Asia : I do not know the Khow suey is Burmese food, when I go back to Asia, I will ask to my Burmese friends..... I had many Burmese food in south east Asia for last 2 years, authentic Burmese food are very delicious and use lots of vegetables and herbs.

Not bad. The service was good; the waiters came multiple times to refill water. Food was quick (~10 mins) and it tasted okay. The total for the lamb bao, noodles, and egg tarts came to be around $55 + extra for tip. Tables were close to other tables. If you're looking to eat somewhere at Bayview Village, this would not be a bad place to have lunch.

Pōpa is a hidden gem. I wish I would have known about this place sooner. I came here with my family and we all left extremely happy with our experience. The staff were so friendly and made sure we were happy throughout the night. We started with the Platha and that set the tone. The Platha was slightly charred which made the taste more intense while the Chicken Curry that it came with paired nicely together. The momos were filled up where you pretty much had to take two bites to devour one. The Chili Crispy Tofu had a good kick, but not to the point that Denmark would ban it. We really liked the Mango Pickled Lamb as the meat was so tender and the curry was really tasty. Just a heads up that the curries don’t come with rice so you’ll need to add that to your order. The Coconut Rice comes in a large portion and is really aromatic! You can take bites of it without the curry and enjoy it. Our favorite dish of the night may have Burmese Garlic Noodles. If you’re a fan of garlic noodles you have to get it here. The noodles are thin so there was more sauce per bite. We finished off with the Thai Tea Cheesecake which was light and fluffy and not overly sweet. Everything we got was amazing and we will definitely be coming back to try other things on the menu. If y’all haven’t given this place a shot do yourself a favor and try it for yourself!

The only Burmese place I know of in the GTA! Located within Bayview Village Mall is this unique restaurant that serves up vibrant flavors thatll get your taste buds dancing. Not Thai, not Lao, not Cambodian, not Indian, definitely Burmese. The Chamucas alone, which are like fried veggie spring rolls taken up a few notches, were excellent as are their lamb dishes. The platha with coconut dip was also tasty and only wished there was more. Also surprised rice wasnt included with the mains even though the menu said it was; rice definitely needed to balance out the flavors. Pricing increased by about 40% from a few months ago but then again they are situated in Bayview Village and with Covid, understandable to survive #supportlocal. Only wish portions sizes were bigger as their food is yummy! Always excellent and friendly service.

Came here for the first time for lunch on a Friday. They have a lunch set either 2 course for $23.99 (appetizer and main) or 3 course (appetizer, main and dessert) for $29.99. There are set choices for that lunch special. Its quite filling and nicely presented. The only thing was the seating arrangement, since it wasnt that busy as we went right when it opened, it was a little odd that they seated another party right beside us when there were lots of other tables free. Wouldve been nicer to have a bit of extra space given the availability of tables for conversation comfort.

Been wanting to try Popa since it opened but never had the chance until today! Came here with a friend for lunch and their lunch 3-course meal caught our eye. We had the tea leaf salad, fish curry and chai tea cheesecake for dessert - the food was alright, nothing spectacular. Seeing other reviews, I see that this is not really authentic Burmese food but rather a Thai/Indian fusion cuisine... My friend seemed to enjoy it more than I did, however. I really wanted to try their golden latte but was told they dont have lattes (not sure if that was just for today or they no longer serve lattes...but it was on their tea menu).

(Updated 2024-11-04) POPA Burmese Kitchen is still remains one of my favourite go-to spot inside Bayview Village Shopping Mall. The food, drinks and service are always amazing! Im been a huge fan since they first opened. 5 stars in my books because they brough Shan Tofu back (they took it off the menu for a long time), and they always have Macau Egg Tarts :D!!! This restaurant deserves more attention and recognition. The food is always delicious. Highly recommend the Shan Tofu, Khow Suey (presentation is beautiful), Rangoon Chicken Curry (not spicy, yayy), and the freshly made Macau Egg Tart. The menu has a lot of Indian, Thai, Malaysian, and Chinese influences; it always excites me to try something new here! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (2021-11-18) Have you guys ever tried Burmese cuisine before? This stylish eatery, POPA Burmese Kitchen inside Bayview Village Mall, offers traditional Burmese flavours fused with Indian & Chinese influences! There are plenty of vegan and gluten-free options on the menu. Recommendations: Pyay Platha Coconut chicken curry with a housemade buttery layered flatbread called platha The curry was hella addictive lol Shan Tofu aka Burmese Polanta SO GOOD, my favourite item on the menu It comes with a tamarind ginger dressing on the side Satay Lilit Bali aka Satay Skewers 2 beef or 2 chicken satays (or one of each) with peanut dipping sauce the beef skewers I ordered were so juicy, tender and flavourful Organic Mohinga This hot and spicy noodle dish is made with red snapper, sautéed lemongrass and a pea broth Served with coriander, boiled egg, homemade pea fritters, and gourd kyaw Rangoon Chicken Curry Burmese chicken curry served with jasmine rice though it says mild spicy, it was not spicy at all, which Im thankful for very tasty dish! Really wish to try their Macau Egg Tart for dessert but they were always SOLD OUT, and now they are out of stock :( 5 stars when they get the Macau Egg Tarts back! Parking: Underground parking also available.

I dont get how this place has majority 5-star reviews tbh. I was willing to overlook the fact that the restaurant is located in a mall (thats always going to bring the vibe down lmao), because the reviews were so good and the food & decor pics looked amazing. If I could, Id give this place a 3.5, because a 3 feels a bit too low. The food is actually really good, a lot of the dishes have a nice unique twist to them, like the samosa-like veg dumpling filling, and filling for the tofu. The vegetable curry was amazing, had a slight sweetness to it, and comes with a fragrant coconut rice. But the ambiance, food presentation, and service (mainly the service) is lacking. The manager seemed polite enough, but our waitress put zero effort into being polite or actually seeming like she wanted to be there. Not sure if she was just having a bad day, or what. I can understand it for sure, having worked in customer service most of my life, but acting like that when you know its someones birthday is crazy. We were a party of 9 there for my fathers birthday, and I kind of felt like I let everyone down by choosing somewhere new, but at least the food was good!

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food was in a good portion. I find the Pad Thai I ordered was a little too saucy and in a tomato base. Maybe its the Burmese style. The curry fish my husband had was also in a tomato base curry, which is not expected but tasted nice.

The service here was on par with what I would expect. No complaints about the speed at which the food came out, it was speedy. I got the hakka Chilli deep fried chicken which was good, although it wouldve paired well with a side of rice but I wasnt prepared to spend $6 on this. I believe the main dishes should come with a side of rice, or at least not be priced so outrageously. Good experience overall.

Came here for Summerlicious, and was first disappointed with our waiter, Ajay. He wasn t very attentive and seemed to take his time or forget requests (e.g., when I asked about my food allergy, he said he would check with the kitchen and never got back to me before the food arrived; I ordered an iced tea that didn t seem to arrive before the end of my meal until I asked about it and it had no ice. He seemed to miss the main point of the beverage too.). The other waitresses were attentive. We enjoyed the appetizers. Some of the food on the menu - the chicken curry and the dessert, Chai cheesecake, really did not meet our expectations (chicken curry was really bland and the cheesecake had no hint of Chai at all. It should be called a vanilla cheesecake with caramel drizzle instead.). Overall, we were left disappointed.

July 21, 2024

Came for the Summerlicious. Chicken was dry. Curry was so watery. Chai cheesecake was disappointing didn t even take a picture. The staff said tables are so full and rushed me to pay the bill once I finished the dessert. Won t come here again and I don t recommend this restaurant. Food

We came for Summerlicious. The food was disappointing. We had samosas and chicken satay to start, fish curry with rice, chicken curry with rice, chai tea cheesecake and Portuguese egg tart for the prix fixe meal. Chicken satay was very dry but nicely spiced. Samosas looked like an eggroll. The red dipping sauce that went with it was very good. Fish curry was the tastiest dish. It was bland for my taste but overall yummy. Chicken curry was horribly dry and more bland than the fish. Cheesecake was nothing but, we could not taste any chai. Portuguese egg tart was good. It was a proper tart. The wine we had with dinner, a white and a rosé were very good. The servers were attentive. They filled our water regularly and took our used dishes away promptly. Overall, this is a food court restaurant with table service. We really wanted to experience Burmese cuisine. We will continue searching for the Burmese experience because we will not be back to this one.

A new place in town that you should visit! It s @popa.toronto for Burmese, Macanese and Balinese Cuisine located right inside @bvshops. On the menu, a variety of salads, soups, noodles, curries and flatbreads with typical ingredients such as tamarind and coconut milk. ___ My first time trying out Burmese food! This one is a MUST....Tea Leaf Salad, a signature dish with lots of crunch and exotic flavours is blend of chopped fresh lettuce, with fermented tea leaves, tomato, fried yellow beans, garlic, sunflower seed, sesame seed, jalapeño, crushed peanuts and dried shrimp. _____ The Pe Platha made in house served warm, crisp exterior and soft inside melts in your mouth which you can dunk in the creamy Coconut Curry which I couldn t seem to get enough of!! ___ Nan Gyi Thoke served on a wood tray is quite similar to Khao Soi. Rice Noodles served with a chicken curry with a hard boiled egg and a variety of garnishes peanut, cilantro, Chili and garlic flakes. ___ Lots of shareables....Shan Tofu with a tamarind dressing and Pyaa Jo Kaye which are Burmese falafels made of yellow lentils. ___ You should try a few of the curry dishes. The Mango Pickled Lamb in a mango chutney was so tender and delicious. If you prefer a lighter curry, try the Village Fish served in a homemade masala, turmeric and pepper. Loved smothering my Jasmine rice with the curry sauces. ___ Make room for the Patsteis de Nata. I love these Portuguese style egg tarts made popular in Macau. One of the best I had with a creamy egg custard filling, flaky crust and just perfectly torched! - Recently revisited Popa again (May 2024) See new photos. Dishes Tried: Tea Leaf Salad Chicken Khowsuey (fave) Shrimp Kebat Tenderloin with Black Peppers Mango Pickled Curry (fave) Wasabi Truffle Edamme Momo (fave) Shrimp Fried Rice Don t forget to order some refreshing drinks. We really enjoyed the mocktails! ___ For more food adventures follow @hungry.jo on Instagram

We ordered the chili garlic noodles and they tasted like nothing, so we sent it back and apparently the chef had missed adding the sauce. Dynamite shrimp is overrated. We ordered a curry which apparently doesn t come rice, which they added themselves without disclaiming, so there was an extra charge for rice to be served. Overall, pricey for what it is.

Lots of textures and lots of spice. Which is generally the food style from Burma. Definitely recommend the mohinga noodle soup and the shrimp kebat. Very tasty. Service was great. She even informed us of the spice level in the dishes we ordered. I visited for a lunch sitting, for which there was ample room at the opening and first seating. I ordered their 2 recommended dishes from the menu, the tea leaf rice and lamb Bao. Food service is slow, as its probably due to there being only one chef in the small kitchen. As he cooks food as it is ordered, so cooking one dish at a time. So the food comes out on waves, and if youre at a table where other people ordered something else, prepare to expect for a wait until the next dish comes out. Basically, dont expect to start eating at the same time as your other table mates or if you do eat at the same time, expect some peoples food to be cold. The tea leaf rice is just that....tea leaves and rice with a garnish of peanuts. I would consider this as more of an appetizer dish a main dish as the placement in the menu is wrong. There are no protein or sufficient proteins in this dish to be called a dish. The tea leaf aroma is absent, the flavours from the tea leaf are absent. Other than the name, this is not worth the price or spectacle. The 2nd dish was the lamb bao which is classed as an appetizer on the menu and only 2-3$ cheaper than the tea leaf rice which I found strange. This item only came as 2 baos which would equate to about 7$ a Bao which would put it price wise close to a fast food burger. For which the burger is substantially more filling. The lamb was dry. The lamb filling was sparse, the greens that accompanied the baos were lettuce and not of the freshest sort. The lettuce was browning which indicates that it is aged. In terms of flavour, there is an absence of the flavour of lamb. Other table mates had curry which at other restaurants include rice (here you side order this and the rice is a large order), the chili chicken is overly salted. It was good for water service for which we were always topped up as there were 4 wait staff milling about. This restaurant is not a return option.

The baos with the lamb, well, the lamb good the actual bao was chewy. The cheesecake infused with chai, well, not much chai it seems, as we barely feel the flavour. Nice experience to try some new cuisine, we wont go back. Service was pretty bad, nobody came to the table, we had to be calling the waiters to get service and they mention they are very busy. We had to ask 3 times to get sparkling water.

Tried out this restaurant for Winterlicious! Overall I would say the food is fine. Not amazing but not bad! The server we had so so sweet. One of our items ended up not coming out but he was very quick to rectify the situation on our bill. I had the Steak Kebat. Our server said that it was EXTREMELY spicey. I found it to be mild at best and my partner who can t really handle spice at all also found it mild. If you can handle spice it is definitely not spicey. Overall would I come back here? Probably not. But it was definitely nice to try for the first time!

We had dinner here upon the recommendation of a friend. It was our first experience with Burmese cuisine, and we were not disappointed. We were there on the final day of Winterlicious 2024 and availed ourselves of the $35 Prix Frixe menu (starter, main, and desert). All the food was delicious and the hot items arrived physically hot. The spicy food had a pleasant approachable heat, even for people who dont like spicy food. The fried lentil condiment was fantastic. Service was friendly, attentive, and quick. We were there at 5:30 so we were the only diners at the start. The ambience was nice, and the music was quiet enough for easy conversation. We would eat here again. (Hopefully, next time, theyll have the Burmese beer. Thankfully, the other tap selections were local craft beers: Steam Whisle Pillsner and Mill Street organic, both good pairings for the food. The wine list was decent, too.) Parking: Shopping mall parking. Wheelchair accessibility: Bayview Village Shopping Centre is entirely accessible.

Winterlicious 2024. Overall, I was a little disappointed with my experience. The service was fine, but I felt the portions and flavours were a bit lacking. I got the Steamed Lamb Leg Bao to start. I thought the lamb itself was tasty, but the ratio of filling to bao was off. Namely, there was not enough filling in relation to the size of the bao. Since the bao relies on the sauce and filling for flavour, it fell short and ended up tasting a bit dry/bland. For the main, I got the Chicken Khowsuey, and this was probably the best of the three dishes. It came with ~7 different toppings, and I appreciated the small trays they were placed in, so you could add/omit the toppings as you d like. I felt this dish was the standout in terms of the flavours and textures. That being said, the chicken was quite dry and the portion size was too small for a main. The dessert was the most underwhelming of the three courses. I got the Chai Tea Cheesecake, and I could not make out any Chai flavour whatsoever it tasted like a regular cheesecake. Moreover, the slice was tiny and it was made on top of the thinnest layer of cake crust , which ended up tasting soggy. A different choice of crust (i.e., graham cracker crust) could have elevated the cake. For something that costs $8 on their normal menu, I would advise against ordering this. All in all, I am curious about their other dishes, but I likely won t return anytime soon. For the price, I expected a bit more in terms of flavour and portion, and I was underwhelmed.

Kohsuey is basically Thai khao soi. Flavor was good. So the main problem is that you pretty much end up with the same food as a Thai restaurant but for $84 after tip for 2 dishes+ 1 starter.

The staff was so lovely and accommodating, asking about allergies and offering tea leaves to smell before ordering. They have a large tea menu of many beautiful favorites that all have a small description of the history associated. The food was quite good, we got the tea rice and the mohinga. Was excited to visit the restaurant as it is known for its fine dining experience. Food was good ... but the appetizer was just as normal as an Indian based stuffed potato fillings samosa... whereas this was in a spring roll shaped. The chicken stir fried Burmese style was good and also the Burmese fried vegetable rice was good too. The ambience was really good... but one lack of attention upseted our mood to the fullest. With not much tables to be served, the staff at the restaurant had not paid attention to the crockery in which they were serving their guests. We were served in a chipped bowl, which isnt a great sign of authenticity on the restaurants part and leaves a bad impression towards the restaurant. This needs to be taken care of .... We did notify the same to the server and he casually just said that we know about it and we just got a Casual Sorry. (If they knew about it then why serve in such crockery only??!) Lastly, I would just mention that the restaurant shall take care and check in their kitchen fr the crockery etc. And keep up to their restaurants standards!! For which its known in particular.

I found this restaurant on Google Maps. The prices seemed reasonable, and I ve never had Burmese food before, so I decided to try it out and boy was it a great decision! The restaurant was a bit darker than what I would have liked, which contrasted with the bright mall interior, but the service was very welcoming and efficient from the start. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there was a three-course prix fixe dinner for just $33 per person, but we only had an hour so we decided to order from the regular menu. A note here upon hearing that we had limited time, the manager shared the information with the waitress, who ensured that we were well taken care of in that short amount of time. Fantastic attention to customers! We tried the khow suey noodles and the mango pickled lamb curry, along with a bowl of coconut rice. The two mains tasted amazing! I loved the coconut flavour of the noodle curry and the way it was presented with little bowls of additional things you could add to the curry, altogether on a wooden tray. The mango lamb curry was mild, and I personally really liked how it was not as tangy as typical Indian or Thai curry. When dining out, I typically place high importance on the portion relative to the cost and I was happy with the portions of not just the mains, but also the rice (plus, the coconut rice was presented with thought and tasted better than regular steamed rice). The food was brought to us in a short amount of time after we ordered and the waitress came frequently during the short meal to check on us, add water or bring things as needed. After the meal, the waitress (or manager, I forgot who it was) remarked that we had a rushed meal due to time limits and hoped that we come back. I definitely will!!

We had 2 completely different experiences. Will not be going there again. Short version is service was horrible the 2nd time, food was stale (frozen veggies!) & highly overpriced. Too much focus on the looks vs actual quality of food + service. 1st time was great - Sandya (server) was amazing & food was good. We had only the veg Khou Suey (totally different experience 2nd time though). 2nd time Service - Terrible. Another server (male with glasses) messed up our order. He got us 2 curries instead of a curry & rice like we ordered. Who orders 2 curries & no noodles/rice? We pointed it out & by the time the rice was made, other food was cold, which then had to be reheated & brought. Another server started helping us & the man with glasses disappeared. We also ordered Khou Suey & spring rolls. The server with glasses never bothered to apologize, instead hanging around showing memes to other servers (??) Food - Stale & overpriced. Bizarrely, the veggies they used this time were frozen Costco veggies (not fresh), & I had to ask them to fill up the condiments (they gave 1 small sliver of lime, literally bare minimum of other condiments for a $30 Khou Suey?). Small portion too for $30 approx ($22 plus tax plus tip) & skimping on condiments? not worth it at all. They are selling 3 spring rolls filled with potato for over $15 ($13 plus tax plus tip). What a joke. Never going there. 2 stars instead of 1 only because of the server Sandya who served us well the 1st time. Avoid this place.

Village Fish Curry: this one is more spicy but they did very well handling the fishy smell in this dish. 10/10 Oh No Khowsuey: This is my most favorite on the table. The portion is huge. Very creamy and nutty, comes with a bunch of crunchy or crispy toppings to balance out the flavor. Tea leaf salad: not recommend, it tastes weird DRINKS: I was shocked with the huge selection of tea they have. Dont know much about tea so their White Peony Tea taste ok, quite bland and lack of fragance. SERVICE: the waiter was super nice and professional, hes very patient explained to me everything. Great food and service! They had a pre-fixe menu option for lunch $25 which has a good selection of choices to choose from. Also tried a few of their other dishes from the main menu and it was good too such as their famous noodles and kebabs. Dietary restrictions: Gluten friendly and vegetarian options available Parking: Located inside Bayview Mall

First time trying Burmese food and we enjoyed it very much! Chicken and beef were halal, not to mention the taste and presentation was great. The Khaowsuey was definitely the highlight of our order. The only thing I would recommend is adding the rice with the Rangoon curry instead of us having to order it separately. Now a days a lot of places that offer curry include rice with it since its not really something you can enjoy without a bit of rice (imo) The place was inside Bayview village and had a very nice interior. They close from 4-5pm (probably in preparation for dinner?) But the atmosphere was great. It looked very aesthetic. The staff was great too. They didnt rush us at all and gave us recommendations when asked. Though they did ask us how we wanted to split the bill as soon as they took our order. Not a negative point but definitely a first since we usually get asked when it is time to pay. All in all it was great food and would definitely come again when in the area! The pricing seemed reasonable too! Dietary restrictions: Halal Parking: The restaurant is inside Bayview village

This was my first time trying Burmese Food. I really enjoyed the Katsu Chicken Bao and Pasteis de Nata. The bao bun was soft and fresh which was a nice contrast to the crispy chicken. The pasteis was warm right from the oven. We also enjoyed the Rangoon chicken and Mohinga. I would definitely come back to try more dishes.

This is my second visit. My kids love the food as its to their liking and taste. Platha with coconut chicken curry was the star among my kids. Rangoon spring rolls were mostly potato based. China town noodles were a little greasy but okay for the kids. The noodles potion was good for four of us after devouring on starters. Lastly, the Macau egg tart was great to finish off the dinner. We are strongly recommend and encourage eating healthy and eating to enjoy. We don t order more food ending up wasting or carrying it home for next meal.

Glad to finally find a Burmese restaurant in GTA. This place is inside Bayview Mall. I love Burmese Platha with coconut chicken curry combo and this place didn t disappoint me. We ordered extra platha to share. Apart of that tried bunch of other dishes such as Lamb Bao, Rangoon curry, kousheuy. Please be advised when it comes to their curry based dishes they more or less tend to taste from a similar palette. Thus, recommended to mix and match. We will come back for their Platha.

Its not bad food, but its definately not authentic Burmese food, like not even close. Unfortunately there are no other Burmese restaurants in the GTA in 2023.

Weve been twice, and both times, food and overall service (so polite, and attentive) was excellent. If you want to know why I therefore removed a star, just skip to the bottom paragraph. So far, weve tried the Mohinga (excellent) Mango Pickled Lamb Curry (delicious and well-cooked, but not spicy despite what they told me, and not sure Im getting any pickled mango which is why I ordered it!), Khowsuey (vegetarian version), coconut rice (not sweet or sticky, so perfect for the curries). We shared a delicious potato appetizer (not on posted online menu as of the time of this review), which was deep fried potato pieces tossed in dry seasoning of chilli, green onion and peanuts. The chilli/garlic street noodles (also not on posted online menu despite it being available for many months on the menu in the restaurant) was enjoyed on both occasions; we added chicken to it and asked for it spicy (they didnt really make it too spicy, so ask for extra chilli flakes on the side if you want it very spicy). Portions are a good size for sharing family-style, and I still definitely had enough for 2 meals, at least. Curries dont come with rice, so you have to order rice separately. Both times weve been, we ordered from their extensive tea menu. As a tea connoisseur or at least being willing to pay for better quality/more unusual teas/attuned to subtleties in the flavours/know the difference between oolong and milk oolong tea for example (no, one doesnt come with milk!), I expected the servers to be able to answer questions and know the correct preparation of different teas. Ive taken off one star solely because of my latest experience in which I ordered white needle tea which is an uncommon, delicate variety (white referring to the immature tea leaves, low oxidation). (If tea is not important to you, you can stop reading now because everything else was top notch and Im picky about tea!) The tea menu specifically says this tea should be enjoyed in multiple steepings to experience the changing flavours - and this is one of my favourite things about drinking tea. At home, I usually do a 1 minute steeping for my first cup of white tea, then 2-3 min, not exceeding 4-5 min ever for white tea! The cups they provide are the small traditional Eastern tea cups, which lend themselves specifically to small and multiple steepings/tastings. The tea arrived already steeping in a 4-cup size teapot and the server recommended steeping for 7 mins (?!?!) and provided a timer. I told him that even the menu suggests multiple steepings for white tea and that I wanted to do shorter steepings. He seemed confused and just reiterated the 7 mins is what is recommended for all teas. It didnt make any sense to me and I was concerned white tea may become bitter in 7 mins...but decided to trust his recommendation. I did pour a cup at the almost 2 min mark (I used my watch since he didnt bring the 2 min timer) which was delicious (lighly grassy/floral as white tea should be), but it was so hot I could not finish it in time to pour another cup (or track him down to ask for another cup) until the 6 min mark! I managed to ask him to bring another cup at 7 mins. The 6 min cup was tinged with bitterness and the 7 min cup (his recommended steeping time) was ruined. For me, being so concerned, rightfully so, that my tea was going to be ruined took me out of being able to enjoy the company I was with. So, I suggest you ask for several cups if you actually want to try the multiple steepings the menu recommends/cant drink a boiling hot cup within 2 mins. Youd need to be ok with later cups having cooled. Or, when you place the order, ask that you control the amount and timing of water poured into teapot - they dont seem to be set up for that by default. Servers need training on different teas and preparation nuances if rare teas continue to be a big menu feature.

Burmese food is pretty rare in Toronto so I was excited to try this place out. The food didn t wow me in anyway, though it is pretty competent. Burmese food is similar to Thai and this place has a bit of fusion going on so it s interesting.

You know how people say Cuban food tastes better outside of Cuba. Having been to Burma (tho almost over a decade ago) I thought that might be true too for Burmese food. We were in the neighborhood to see a friend and ended up coming here coz the BF wanted to try this place. Surely, why not? Like I said, my food experience in Burma was kinda meh so its not like I had anything good to compared this with. At $20+, the Rangoon Chicken Curry was rather watery and the chicken breast dried and blend - and it didnt even come with rice, which was another $6, and was cooked with so much water it was excessively goo-y and sticky, and not in a good way. I honestly dont understand why the place got so busy. We didnt have a reservation and so was put to the table on the outside (part of the mall area) and I had that odd chair that was different than every other one they used in the restaurant which was super uncomfortable, that you could feel the metal bar of the back and seat. I dont really usually care for staff coming around checking on you hows it going? Is everything OK? But as a side note, for a restaurant of this the nature they wish to set themselves up as, there was none of that also. And we also had to ask for water refill multiple times. All in all, I found the whole experience pretty meh...
