1921 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4S 1Z3, Canada
Hot Black Coffee is an innovative euro-centric cafe on Yonge Street, just north of Davisville on the east side. This tech-savvy cafe aims to bring competition-level quality and consistency to every drink served - sourcing and roasting coffee for their own distinct style. Everything inhouse is made from scratch, using the freshest, most local, organic and natural ingredients wherever possible.
A charming little spot that's nice for a quick stop on a rainy day 🩵 The oat latte was deliciously strong, and the friendly barista made the experience even better. Just a heads-up—they don't accept cash, which is understandable for staff safety and the drinks are on the pricier side for their size. Worth a visit if it’s on your way!
It's a very small and hard-to-see shop that you may easily miss when you are passing it. But in case you didn't، you will taste one of the best coffee in Toronto. There is no place to sit، just grab and go. They also have an egg breakfast sandwich that is worth testing. This is the reason that people say size does not matter. Some people say!!
Unfortunately, they don't accept cash. I don't know how they can refuse to accept cash. The cashier who informed me was nice and friendly but I was shocked that I couldn't get a latte because I didn't have a credit card or debit card with me. 'cash not accepted' How is this allowed?! Since I wasn't able to purchase anything, it led me Three Doors Down to a Cafe that accepted cash and where I enjoyed their lovely latte.
Guess what I got here. I got RIPPED OFF! 10$ for a small cold brew and an oat cookie! Wtf! I guess I just paid for their next As Seen On TV appearance. The coffee too was.... Bleugh. It had a Spice aftertaste and not in the good way. Should have just got a tiny drip coffee and ran away from this literal hole in the wall before they charge for sniffing the aroma.
I was looking for vegan treats after eating vegan Indian meal in the neighbourhood, and noticed that this cute little coffee shop had some. I appreciate that the treats were displayed in the window, where they take your order and give you the food. This is a take-out only coffee shop. So, the vegan treats available at that time were: 1. Strawberry oat bar 2. Beet chocolate loaf 3. Banana bread (vegan & gluten free) 4. Date square I purchased one of each and they were nice. My favourite was the strawberry oat bar. It was chewy, sweet with a bit of tang and ginger flavour. Second favourite was the Beet chocolate bar, it was like a brownie, dense but soft and chocolatey. The banana bread was a a bit dry, due to it being gluten free, and it tasted very mild. It was okay. The date bar was underwhelming. It was not as sweet as I was expecting; it tasted rather flat. The crumbs on the date square were on the saltier side. Overall, I am grateful they have vegan treats options 😊
Tiny little window coffee shop with amazing Raspberry Jam Cookies! Flat white and cappuccino are really nice. I wish there was a place to sit down to actually enjoy all these good things but other than that this is a must try place
We enjoyed stopping by this coffee shop while we were biking around Toronto. We got stuck in the rain, so we had to stand under the overhang, but it was still worth it. Great service—the barista let us try some tasty cold brew!
Momi and her team are amazing, always can count on a yummy cup of coffee and sourdough bread! Stopped by for takeout brunch on the weekend by Gerry and Mandy, also delicious. Able to keep it fancy with the brunch to go meals during these covid times
Staff is very friendly but honestly I don t like their coffee or probably the brew wasn t made properly I don t know.
They have the best cold brew ever!! Please don t add milk or sugar to it, try it black and enjoy the smoothness and fruit notes in it
The coffee itself was ok, the second time I got a Matcha Latte and it was horrible, I paid 10 dollars for it and there seemed to be something not properly solved so Id tasted these little disgusting pieces, not sure what it was, but I that I had to throw it away.
Having parked at the Blue P north of here last week, I walked out of the lot heading south immediately seeing a billboard proclaiming Best Coffee Ever, which also claims CNN, CP24 and many other such TV sources. As a coffee lover, having travelled all over the world, Ive had some really fine coffee, so I was definitely up to trying this. On recommendation after having asked about the choices, I ordered up an Americano, which is made from their HotBlack Blend and the rest is history as they say. The coffee lived up to the claim. Its a really good cup. Equal to the varieties I bring in from the USA and Italy. So much so, when heading back, I bought a bag of the HotBlack Blend beans, to have it at home, as this is not an area I tend to frequent, as in years can go by infrequent. The beans made the same exact wonderful coffee. (Ive bought two more bags today). And being back in the area today, grabbed another cup...and still as perfect as the first one. The service is exceptional, the barista answers questions with a smile, and made the wonderful coffee I had on both visits. Dont be tempted to go to Tim Hortons or Second Cup nearby. This beats them both. And same price or less. Up until this, I bought coffee from Italy and the USA (having it shipped in). Yes, expensive, but now I have a local favorite. Oh, and on occasion, I tend to make a latte with some Cinnamon at home. Cinnamon loves this blend and enhances the overall flavor, which I was pleasantly surprised by, as the cinnamon isnt really a good mix with many other coffees I buy. So yet another bonus. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!! Parking: Blue P immediately north of the shop.
Amazing coffee and service. Isabelle is the sweetest barista ever!
Cute little cafe! I loved the jam cookie and the latte
Espresso (single origin, columbia) Texture: 9.1 Aroma: 9.3 Flavour: 10.0 Balance: 9.8 Tasting Notes: Red Licorice, Guava, Mint, Walnut Final Score: 9.6/10
Brew Coffee is okay, but nice spot to stop by
Simply NOT the best coffee ever!
Dont believe the hype - marginally better than average coffee. Service without a smile - Pass
Best coffee in the city. I commute from London once per week and always leave with a bag of beans to bring home.
It s ironic this place is called hot black coffee when my latte was cold and they didn t even have regular coffee for my husband ! This was my 2nd time there. My first latte was legit cold the first time so I politely asked the barista to please make sure it s hot this time I took a sip and it was barely warm again! I had to say something, she offered to make a new one but I m not down to waste over a cup of almond milk as it takes a lot of energy to make almond milk I just wanted her to microwave it or something, I don t have one at home. I walked away with my 8$ Luke warm latte it would also be nice if the staff came off a little bit more friendly especially because it s luxury prices waste of money and poor experience
Such pleasant staff!! Everything handled with such care!
Really expensive, they only carry almond milk which doesnt mix in with coffee and the coffee is very bitter.
Great coffee, tasty treats and always quick service. Just be sure to bring your card as they are cashless.
We ordered iced decaf latte and cold brew with almond milk. Both drinks tasted sour, as if something had gone bad. Also, it was very pricey! Do not recommend this place.
I asked for an Americano with a little bit of ice to cool it down and I was handed a completely cold coffee that wasnt even freshly brewed (didnt taste fresh at all). I regret my tip. To be clear, I actually explained that its a hot Americano with a little ice so ....
Almond milk is the only alt milk and they use a watery brand, really affects the taste. Was made too hot so burnt the beans. Had to pour it out :(
Friendly staff, a great dark cappuccino and a tasty walnut butter square. Not the cheapest, but was worth the stop.
Got a black drip coffee which tasted really sour. It was undrinkably vile and tasted like sour milk.
Finally, a smooth coffee thats not loaded with sugar.
Seriously one of the best coffee s I ve ever had
Once you get hooked to it no other coffee will make sense! Although their store timings keep changing; the coffee flavour makes up for all the inconvenience
Dont get the hot chocolate
Probably the best coffee in Toronto
The coffee is consistently good and perfect temperature, and the baristas are very friendly and knowledgeable.
Had cappuccino, americano and bourbon chocolate chip cookie. The coffee was bitter so it was better as a cappuccino than americano. There is no complexity in the coffee after the roasting so in the americano, it just tastes bitter. Rather like an instant coffee. The cookie was dry, possibly over baked to get the crunchy edge. Don t waste money on the bourbon if you cannot taste it.
Coffee is ok, To-go only. But more expensive than other coffee places
Ive gone to this location several times now since the coffee tastes great, unfortunately more recently I get luke warm coffee every time so for $4 is not worth it in my opinion.
I am a local and I m a huge believer of supporting local business. My first visit was fair. The second time there was this lady who was indirectly racist. She literally asked me to step aside to serve a Caucasian girl behind me in the queue. I would never visit them again.
My wife and I always love going here. Whether it is a small snack or matcha lattes, we are always please with our food. The staff are incredibly kind and courteous as well. Would highly recommend!
Have been struggling to find a decent coffee spot since moving to Toronto, this one definitely matches to Australian coffee standards
Mediocre
Seen this place often while on the bus to St. Clair (hurry up already, Eglinton Crosstown LRT!) and decided to grab a coffee. Got the drip coffee which was pretty flavourful and I really enjoyed the raspberry shortbread cookie - will definitely go back for this combo!
Walking by here this morning was totally worth it. From when I finally chose what I wanted, the service was excellent, the carrot cake got devoured before I even got my drink it was that good; Moist, soft, the icing on top was just beautifully complimenting to the cake. I decided on the chocolate mint latte cause it sounded fancy but I still wanted that coffee kick, and it did indeed deliver~ Highly recommend as I definitely will be coming back~ <3
Great location to grab a coffee!
It was just perfect on a rainy day!
It s convenient if you have a dog. However I went here once and had an iced latte that was mediocre and more expensive than Starbucks. I went again thinking I ll get an iced coffee instead, I was asking the girl about it and she seemed quite annoyed I was even asking if they had iced coffee, anyway they don t have ice coffee at all. Just espresso n water for 8$ And I d rather not, especially i felt quite uncomfortable just for asking about the coffee and options considering first time I went and didn t even love the coffee but i found it convenient, because of the rudeness and over priced mediocre coffee I won t be back.
I love a good flat white and Hot Black delivers, but doesn t quite nail it for me. I prefer more zing in my roast therefore I deduct one star. If you prefer a more balanced flavour that doesn t stand out in any particular direction you will be pleased.
Very tasty fresh brewed coffee
I used to love this place but I haven t been back in a year or so. I just ordered an iced matcha latte for $8.39!! That s really absurd. And guess what? It was actually so bad and it was 8 ounces. I will not be going back there
Delicious coffee and friendly staff. I always stop here when I m in the area
Its a cute little coffee shop. Tried coffee for the first time, took normal filter coffee. Yes its different from the other cafes. It has more strong taste of coffee. Definitely loved It and will try again.
Easy to miss this spot there s just a small window for ordering, but definitely worth a try, i love their cold brew with Éthiopien Guji Shakiso, very similar to my favorite Harrar, nice blueberry notes, very refreshing and tasty
I have tried their hot chocolate, coffee, a couple of different of cookies and i have never been disappointed. Everything I have tried from this spot is delicious and the staff is super friendly. Love it :)
Good spot
Excellent customer service with some amazing offers for hot beverages and pastries. Definitely worth a visit and more.
Delicious coffee and great staff
Not sure who made the claim this place has the best coffee in Toronto. Perhaps I got an off pot, and am off put. Coffee is okay.
This place has an amazing coffee! I have tried almost everything here and its really good! Also, the stuff is super friendly
Good coffee, great service. Like the take window, I wish more places did it.
Hot Black is an excellent Midtown staple. I buy coffee and beans here and sometimes food.
Friendly staff and coffee is second to none.
Thank you for opening one uptown! The best coffee and friendly service is what they are known for. It s a pickup booth for now but I hope they could open a proper coffee shop when our lives go back to normal.
Always good with friendly service.
I am a bit addicted to their raspberry cookie - its amazing paired with their -also delicious- cappuccino. I thought I was coffee blind but Hot Blacks my first choice now when I want a coffee before 5 (I have to settle for others later because I am a bit of a night owl). Their coffee really does taste different and better than other places Ive tried. Super recommend!
Incredible coffee and friendly service!
Beyond amazing coffee, super friendly staff and tasty brunch on weekends! Highly recommend!
Truly some of the best coffee Ive ever had! Love the addition of breakfast on the weekends (and the wine selection).
Best cappuccino I ve had in a long time!
Tried a couple of pastries right when they opened, I was disappointed. Just to respond to the owners, I posted the review right after my visit, but it seems like the page was reset and my review was deleted so I reposted. That being said I finally went back and got a date square, it was really good
Always very friendly staff and flavorful drinks recommend anyone looking for a nice shot of espresso while exploring Midtown also has outdoor seating
Probably the best coffee in town and the jam biscuits are yummy.
capochino was okay. Not the best in Toronto.
Their raspberry cookie is very good.
Love love love their coffee, so glad theyre expanding.
Best coffee in midtown.
Honestly I find this place very overrated, the food is decent but you dont get much for how expensive it is. The egg toast is alright and the sourdough is nice but it gets soggy quick. I got a iced cortado and my partner got the cold brew, the cortado was ok but the cold brew was just gross. It was weirdly fruity tasting, like strawberries. Would definitely not get again.
Loved their iced latte with coffee jelly!
I reallyyyy like their mocha lattes even though they are very pricey. For an 8oz I pay over $6.50 with tax + a small tip. I also wish they had indoor dining. :(
Definitely one of the smoothest cappuccinos I ve had! I enjoyed it but not the price, $7 for a small 8oz cappuccino is a bit much. I ve been wanting to try this place for a while, but the cost definitely threw me off. I get that you re also paying for quality and this place certainly delivered on that front. Definitely worth trying once, but I don t think I can justify regular visits :( I get that it s fairly standard to charge extra for non dairy milk, but it s very disheartening for those of us who cannot consume dairy without being violently ill. This is more a comment on coffee places in general, but I did feel like this surcharge was bit more than other small coffee shops in the area.
Great coffee, friendly staff
Unfortunately I cannot make peace with $6.15 for an Americano with almond milk. This is close to $2 more than anywhere else in the city. :(. And it s just not THAT great of coffee to warrant the price. Response to owner s reply: yes, it s because you charged $1.00 extra for the almond milk.
Work in the area over two years I can say it is THE Best Coffee Ever- Matcha Latte, Smooth, with enough matcha flavor combines with the foam milk aroma, finish a large size in 5 mins. Would recommend everyone have a try Con: little bit pricey but worth it!
Love the coffee, the Staff is nice too!
Sorry but I dont understand all the praises.. jam cookie was good but banana hazelnut loaf was very dry and tasted almost rancid.. ice coffee was decent. So when you put the price in perspective..
American champs.
Great coffee, even better service!
It was my first time trying their coffee to see what the hype and good reviews are about. I got a medium drip coffee for more than 3 dollars and unfortunately the taste didn t have any kick, nothing special going for it. I d rather tall pike from Starbucks.
Im a bit picky with the way I take my Americano. They followed the instructions to the T. Delicious coffee! We also tried a GF/Vegan Banana loaf, a brownie and my personal favourite: beet/chocolate loaf. All were fresh and delicious! Thank you!
The Ethiopian drip coffee is to die for. So delicious. Cute cups to boot.
One of the best coffee shops in Toronto. And they have a pop up restaurant that works in at the same location as well.
Great coffee and treats, amazing service. Have to go back for their lunch menu.
This coffee shop embodies everything I love about living in the city! I love how theyve adapted to the pandemic by having customers order from the window. The coffee is always delicious, but I see they also sell VQA wines, local cheeses, delicious-looking brunch, and even a local produce bag to-go. I highly recommend anyone in the area to support this local gem.
Best coffee beans Ive tried in toronto and make amazing iced coffee drinks
Thank you for my morning coffee! It tastes great and the lady that was making it was very helpful and friendly :)
A must try is their avocado toast! The freshly baked bread with avocado and cherry tomatoes is enough to already wake you up. I go for their ice americano or the cappuccino. Both very good choices!
Good coffee but a bit too pricey for what you get.
Bar none, best coffee in the city. So glad to have this nearby; I am hooked on the jam cookies, and the coffee is perfect. The staff are super friendly, the prices are reasonable. Hope this location is here to stay in Midtown for a long, long time to come.
Amazing coffee and even better cookies. The fact that you opened a place in midtown is just wonderful.
