The atmosphere was incredible, with remarkable service from the friendly staff who aimed to ensure guests were comfortable. The live entertainers were extremely talented, providing a delightful experience for the mature audience. The food was satisfying and reasonably priced. I highly recommend SugarKane to anyone interested in retro-style cuisine. The owners run the establishment efficiently. Kudos to the staff at SugarKane - you rock! My husband and family were very pleased and we will definitely be returning. We are just a 10-minute walk from Danforth.🥰🥂

Absolutely love this spot and definitely will return. Such a great vibe. Great service. Reasonable pricing and the food was awesome. A friend and I stopped in to celebrate each others birthdays by having a drink and sharing some apps. So happy she introduced me to this place. Renee was very hospitable and our server Faton was a total gem. We enjoyed the Dutty Whine and Dutty White Whine which is their take on a Sangria but tasted way better. We also enjoyed the corn and salt fish cakes with a salad with added shrimp. We even had some breadfruit on the side. Sooo good. Did I mention I’d recommend this place? They have live music but we got there just a bit too early to enjoy that .I will be back to enjoy that and try some of the other meals that looked so tasty as they passed by for other patrons. I was brought to tears when they unexpectedly surprised us with a happy birthday dessert and song. Definitely felt special and all I can say is thank you to them all for adding extra love to our celebrations.

First time eating here and it was great. Forgot to snap a picture of my meal but the burger was delicious. I find the prices to be very economical for the quality of the food being served. I had the pleasure of being served by Thusani. He definitely made the experience worthwhile. Clean bathrooms.

SugarKane is a hidden gem around Bloor and Pape, I’ve come here for both brunch and dinner and both times the food was superb. Amazing flavours and super friendly staff makes for a great dining experience. The happy hour specials are not to be missed, with the surf and turf tacos being a big highlight. The restaurant gets packed so reservations are recommended.

We first discovered SugarKane on TikTok and thought it would be the perfect place to celebrate my Mum’s birthday with our family. And we were absolutely right! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with a vibrant Caribbean flair. The service was exceptional, especially for such a large group. Our server, Soraya, was attentive and friendly, and the restaurant co-owner, Renée, even came out personally to check on us, making sure everything was perfect. As a native of the Caribbean, I’ll admit we were a bit hesitant to try Caribbean Cajun fusion, but the food completely blew us away! We shared several items off the menu, and each dish was better than the last. Some of our favourites included the Taco Sampler Platter (the Jerk Chicken Tacos and Shrimp Tacos were incredible), both the Sticky Tamarind Wings and the Cajun Dry Rub Wings, and of course, the Chicken & Waffles—crispy, flavourful, and the perfect balance of sweet and savoury. We also ordered the Jerk Chicken Alfredo, Cod Fritters, and the Oxtails on rice. And don’t miss out on the Sweet Plantains — they were perfectly caramelized and delicious! The highlight was when the entire staff came over to sing a lively, joyful rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ to my Mum, making her feel truly special. They went above and beyond to make the night memorable. SugarKane exceeded all of our expectations, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique, vibrant dining experience in Toronto. This place is a must-visit for any occasion—five stars all the way!

Excellent food! We ordered the blackened salmon and the oxtail, it was hands down absolutely delicious, especially the salmon! Loved the vibe of the live DJ and everyone seemed to be having a great time. Only comment is, I wish we were checked in with a bit more (i.e how is the food, do you need anything etc.). Outside of that great spot on the Danforth!

We came in on a Sunday morning intending to try the main menu and were pleasantly surprised to see a brunch menu and decided to give it a try! First off, the vibes in this place are absolutely immaculate. On a nice summer day, the windows at the front of the restaurant open up to make a makeshift patio and between the nice breeze and the great music, it really makes you feel like you're at an all inclusive or something. The food was really good, though if im being honest a bit on the pricey side for what you get. We got the saltfish cakes, the breakfast sando, and the spicy oxtail grilled cheese. The food tasted delicious, but value for money wise it's a bit overpriced for what you're getting. Definitely recommend the sando over the oxtail grilled cheese. Would definitely like to come back and try the restaurant's regular menu sometime.

SugarKane in Toronto is a Caribbean and Cajun fusion restaurant offering a lively and laid-back vibe with vibrant décor that showcases Antillean and West Indian culture. Located on Danforth Avenue, the restaurant is known for its creative menu that mixes traditional island flavors with Southern influences. Signature dishes include jerk chicken fettuccine, blackened salmon, salt fish cakes, and Creole jambalaya, all of which balance spicy and savory flavors well. They also serve unique tropical cocktails like the Wray & Ting, made with grapefruit soda and Wray & Nephew rum, and sorrel-infused mojitos for an island twist. The dining experience is enhanced with a mix of reggae, soca, and live DJ sessions on weekends, adding to the festive ambiance. While the service is friendly, it can be slower during peak hours. SugarKane is especially popular among those looking for an authentic yet innovative Caribbean-Cajun fusion experience in Toronto.

I waited for 2 weeks in anticipation of dinner with my husband. I ordered a banana cabana. Made with Baileys and banana. Tasted none of those. I had the oxtail bowl too much sauce in the oxtail and tasteless. The dining chairs are most uncomfortable. The cooks three Indian men no hair cover and one playing with his beard in the kitchen. The only person of the 10 or so persons in the kitchen with hair cover was the dish washer. Very unprofessional place they stand around in the kitchen eating. I was so disappointed I did not leave a tip. The flies sealed the deal for me. If you want a cook shop vibe Sugar Kane is ur place. My y husband had something with shrimp that he liked. His beer could have been in a glass. Guess my standards are a bit too high.

We were a group of 7 (3 kids). First thing, the manager or person in charge looked pissed the entire night. She wasn t approachable what s so ever. Everyone working just looked cranky. I don t like when I go into a restaurant and not greeted with a little politeness; hi, how are you -nothing Anyway, no one owes me nothing, so it s all good. The waitress asked how I wanted the bill split, told her in two and pointed out who should be on what bill, she ended up giving us 3 bills. Super annoying, at this point whatever. You clearly don t care. Another thing was, they added the gratuity, but didn t say anything to let us know it would be added to the bill. We were not a big group. Furthermore, let us know prior-the service was lacking. The food was an experience for sure, being from Jamaica, my expectations may be too high but I could tell they are catering to a diverse demographic, for sure. I ordered the oxtail bowl, it could have had a little more flavour but I didn t not enjoy it. The meat was tender, the rice was flavourful. My daughter s chicken strips were a little over cooked. My friend ordered the jerk bowl and he didn t enjoy it. The other orders weren t too bad if I m being honest. The plantain was a bit dry as well. I will say the drinks were great, they definitely had a generous hand with the liquor. I tried the sorrel mojito, the rum punch was great I heard and the guava mocktail. But overall we were not disappointed, I ve definitely had worse. I was with great people so the vibe was nice, I honestly would go back because my friend told me to try the spinach dip. What makes me hesitant is the service. But I say give it a shot for sure.

Did a spontaneous celebratory late night dinner with my 10yrs old daughter the other day. We spotted Sugar Kane and I told her it was a sign for us to dine. Small, intimate cozy vibe with Caribbean music blaring upon entry! Wasnt too crowded so seated quickly. Server was friendly and allowed us time to make our food choices. Fish cakes are a MUST starter! The kiddie menu was giving as they offered mini Chicken and Waffle sliders as an entrée... got 2 thumbs up for the child. I decided on the Jerk Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo and wasnt disappointed. Hearty sized bowl with the softest garlic bread (with a portion to take home). Another MUST try! Prices were reasonable, too... Would definitely return to explore the menu further - Parking: Go closer to 9pm Saturdays to ENJOY FREE street parking. Just one catch - construction is happening so gotta really scan for an open spot! Kid-friendliness: Menu options were limited - three entrée choices.. maybe images would help a child to visualize the menu options better. Dessert was a highlight as they gave my daughter a snack bag of mini OREOs vs. ice cream sundae with hot sauce! Flexibility is key when dealing with the public, so thank you to the hostess,

The food and music was fire! Amazing oxtail and sorel lemonade. Some opportunities...the servers were just waking around taking videos of themselves and ignoring customers. Yelling across the restaurant at each other. We called to say we would be 30mins late and they said that was ok but when we sat down our waiter said they have a reservation at our table at 730 and will we be done by then instead of trying to solve the issue themselves as we assumed by calling to say wed be late that they would have shuffled us around or told us wed have a time limit.

Table was not ready upon arrival for reservation. Once seated it took another 10 mins to be greeted. The waitress was not nice and you be honest it seemed like she had an attitude. Mains were decent. The spinach dip was the best thing we ordered. The came out to sing happy birthday and my birthday treat had hair in it. I returned it to the lady whom I believe to be the owner or at least the manager; she simply said oh no a hair? Would you like another one? At that point the entire experience was terrible and we just wanted to go. Idk if I could give them another chance upon visiting especially for something as important as my birthday. I hope they do better. Perhaps it was just an off night. But all in all they truly didn t seem to care much about my table and it felt like they didn t want us there.

Came here for dinner Friday night with a group of friends. One friend had already been here a couple of times and said it was good so we finally made the trip to check it out. We had a reservation for 8pm however when we arrived our table wasnt ready until 47 mins later. I wasnt impressed because thats the point of booking a reservation so you dont have to wait. We finally get seated and it took the server about 15mins before he came to the table to take our drink orders. We waited about 20-30mins before we actually received our drinks which I thought was an unacceptable amount of time for drinks. The water didnt even come to the table until over 1hr of us sitting at the table. After ordering the drinks it took the server quite some time to actually take our food order. Food I think took a reasonable time to come out. I ordered the blackened Salmon with mashed potatoes which I somewhat enjoyed the salmon not too much the mashed potatoes. We ordered another round of drinks which again took a significant amount of time to come. A lady which I believed is the owner came over and asked how was everything I said it was ok and she asked why just ok and my friend jumped in and started explaining everything. The lady was saying they were short staffed and other things and apologized. They tried to make up for it by offering us drinks on the house. Overall I would say the staff were nice the atmosphere was great as there was a D.J playing and he was playing some great music but as far as the food and service it could have been better. The fact that we booked a reservation and wasnt seated until 47mins later really already turned me off. While I appreciated the staff trying to make it up in the end I most likely wouldnt visit this restaurant again. I also didnt like that our bill came with the gratuity added when it said 8 guests when we were only a group of 6.

First time visit to Sugar Kane over the weekend. The vibe and atmosphere was very nice. There was a live performance by a singer during a portion of our dinner, who had a wonderful voice. After she was done there was Soca and Afrobeats playing which I love! In terms of food we had the corn and jerk chicken tacos for starters. The corn was well seasoned and had a nice kick to it. The tacos were also very tasty. For the main I had the salmon with mash and string beans. I was disappointed, the flavour wasnt great due to the oil that they use in the dish instead of a gravy or sauce. And the oil was pretty much all throughout the dish. The mash itself was a bit underwhelming. The dish as a whole just wasnt for me. I also tried the Sorrel Mojito which i really liked. And our server was attentive and friendly! Although the main wasnt great everything else was good. I would go back to try a different dish.

I had an amazing experience at this restaurant for the first time with my sisters. We visited on Saturday, April 13, 2024, to celebrate one of my sisters birthdays. The ambiance and the vibe were on point. There was no negativity, just all positiveness. The waiters and waitresses were very sweet, polite, and kind. Now on to the food, Im a big foodie and it was finger licking good. I ordered the curry goat bowl, and it was very good and tasty. The chicken and waffle sliders are absolute must try. That is probably the best (this is my opinion now) that Ive had. That sauce on the side ( I dont know what it was called) was really good. It went well together. Also, the sugarcane sundae, let me just say I want a box of it so I can stick it in my freezer. That ish was lit lit . Final thoughts, the service may not be the fastest, but the food, environment, and entertainment trumps it all. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone.

Beautiful warm intimate spot to have dinner or just a drink. Live bands on Saturdays and a live DJ on some of the days of the week. You have to reserve a table, or you could walk in and sit at the bar. The staff are amazing and friendly. The food was decent. The Soul Bowls coconut rice was a little watery and had little taste, but the rest of the dish was flavourful. The saltfish cakes were nice and a tad spicy (thumbs up), but I wish it had small chucks of fish to add a burst of flavor to the dough. The Sorrel Mojito was great, I ended up getting two. They have an on street patio in the summer with paid parking on the street. Wheelchair accessibility: There are no steps to enter the restaurant. But the washrooms are downstairs.

I love the atmosphere, the music, and the fact that the owners will actually come out and check on patrons. I met one of them and she was lovely and gracious. Really wanted to love this place as I heard such good things about it but I probably won t be going back. Sat down to join friends that had arrived earlier and was immediately pressured to order because our table was needed for a following reservation at 7 pm. I arrived to the table about 5:50pm. The waiter made it seem like I didn t have time to order anything and eat it if I didn t order in the next two mins. So I asked how long it would take to prepare a main and he said 20mins so I said cool that s plenty of time. Regardless I ordered a main, app to go, and a drink. We were also repeatedly asked if we needed anything else in very curt and hustled tone because it had to be in now. Mind you the other guest had long ordered and meals were arriving. We were also pressured to give dessert orders due to time. We were rushed for or dessert order only for the waiter to come back 35mins later and tell us they had no more of their special monthly dessert at 6:30pm for your dinner service on a Saturday! Why rush us if you weren t going to put it in right away. Tbh I think he just wanted us up and lied. My food came I had plenty of time to eat. Salmon with green beans and honey sriracha wings were tasty. Didn t enjoy the mash potatoes they were cold. At 6:50 he came with bills and rushing us with urgency. I ve been to many restaurants who are up front with seating limits and have never had any issue. I can respect it. There is a way to provide quick service that is timely and not dismissive. We paid and I asked to sit at the bar to finish our drinks and free up the the table that was so urgently needed. I really wish I had not tipped by the end of the night. We sat down the with drinks and our take away boxes. Mind you I asked to sit here since the table was needed with such urgency. The bartender asked if we moved from a table or just arrived. I ll give her the benefit of the doubt that she didn t see us sitting right across from her before but again the tone was great you moved from the table and are taking up my bar seats. I saw you pay your bill and I won t be making tips off of you. I answered politely they needed our table and we are sitting here to free it up. She brought us a drink menu and never came back we had intended to order more but hey. While we were at the bar many side conversations about our transition to the bar were taking place but no one said anything to us directly. It s about 7:30pm now and our table which were rushed through ordering and service is still empty. Instead of speaking directly to us a table he just served. Our waiter went to one of the owners to let her know that people wanted to sit at the bar to eat. Again, talk to us don t have conversations about people in front of people. Our table is still sitting empty. Someone then came over to ask us to get up and say we could go back to the table we were just swiftly vacated from. I said no thanks we will be leaving. The vibe was gone and it was just disrespectful. We didn t need to move or rush in the first place. We spoke briefly to one of the owners. She looked up the table and there wasn t a reservation on that table till 8pm so we were rushed, dismissed, and served poorly for no reason. Our waiter lied to us about the following reservation timing. She didn t understand why we were moved but also seemed quite indifferent and did not offer an apology. I made note to our waiter on the way out how disappointed it was for us to be moved, when our table then sat empty for over 45mins, we ask to sit a the bar and now your asking us to get up from here instead of seating these new customers at the empty table . He smiled Said a quick sorry and rushed off. Again dismissive and insincere. We paid our bills so we were dispensable. Not a fan of this type of service environment. It is not welcoming nor does it generate repeat customers. We spent hundreds of dollars on this place for mediocre beverages and terrible service. My friends and I are not coming back

March 22, 2024

Make no mistake, the food is damn good. But for me, good SERVICE trumps good food everytime!! I arrived at 7, I waited over half an hour for my food to arrive, which honestly was not a problem. Only to be promptly kicked out at 9:15. I think they should take into consideration the time you have to wait on your food. I think they know the food is good, so they figure to hell with etiquette, compassion, and just good ole fashioned KINDNESS. Lemme make mention that we were a group of 16 people. I have never EVER been kicked out of ANYWHERE in my entire life, and I didn t even do anything. I made this reservation in good faith, wasn t expecting to be treated like that. If you re looking to hang and kick back, this is NOT the place for you.

What a gem at the Danforth! This Caribbean style place has it all! It is run by a magnificent sisters trio: Donna, Renee and Nicole, who are always around welcoming everyone with a big smile on their faces. The food is delicious, getting you back to those caribbean places with their legit flavors. Cocktails are also really fresh and caribbean. The honey-sriracha signature chicken wings are simply the best! Love that they usually have live music during the weekends. It amazes me how everyone that comes in here shares the same vibes as the owners, so it would not be a surprise if they play a song everyone likes and all the people at the place (ALL THE PEOPLE) will come together singing and dancing. Its such a unique atmosphere! Loved this place for every single aspect. As all good things, youll have to wait since everything is freshly made at the moment, but its worth it. It tends to be busy during the weekends so its better to make a reservation! It also offers outdoor seating.

Just a quick review about my sour experience at Sugar Kane. I cant give an opinion about the food, but I can do the same re: service (or lack thereof). We had reseverations for 8:15pm but didnt get asked to sit by the bar until 8:45, while our table was being cleaned. They finally sat us in a tiny corner, where all the unseated people gathered (needless to say that the space was very cramped). When I simply pointed out a table that had been empty since 8:00, one of the three owners snarled at me (unacceptable). An hour wasted here with out even out a glass of water to show for it. Absolute dross.

Id like to share my recent experience at Sugar Kane on December 1st, around 9pm. I visited for the first time on December 8th, excited as I had heard positive reviews about the place. Upon arrival, I was promptly greeted and waited about 10 minutes for my reserved seating area to be prepared. During this time, I ran into a friend and had a pleasant conversation at the bar with the welcoming owners, who also crafted great drinks. Once my table was ready, my friend and I ordered a few appetizers, specifically the Fish fritters and shrimp tacos. While enjoying the fritters, I unexpectedly found what seemed to be a bone in my mouth. To my surprise, it turned out to be a whole 5-cent nickel in the middle of my fritter. Both the restaurant management and the waitress promptly addressed the matter, expressing the same shock and confusion as my table guests and me. The owners were attentive and asked how they could make amends. Unsure how to respond, I remained silent. They then offered to remove the cost of our main meals. However, when the bill arrived, only my main meal had been deducted, prompting me to remind the waitress that her meal should also be included. Unfortunately, her hospitality seemed to change after this interaction. I paid for all other appetizers and numerous drinks ordered. Reflecting on the situation at home, I felt that a different approach should have been taken. In hindsight, a more appropriate response might have been to comp the entire meal. While the food was enjoyable, the incident left me with a lingering discomfort. I found myself torn between leaving quietly, requesting a complimentary meal, or addressing the mistake without creating a scene. Despite the initial kindness, I believe covering the entire bill would have been a more fitting resolution considering the unusual unsanitary circumstance.

Im so sad to post this 1 star and truth be told if I can post 0 stars I would. My family of 4 are loyal customers to SugarKane. When we have friends/family visiting we recommend SugarKane. Im always boasting and promoting your resautant. I am big on supporting local stores. I came to SugarKane on Taste of Danforth (Aug. 12) and asked for plantain and the host, in a belitting manner tapped her finger on the table insinuating the menu on the table was what was being served. Now not being served the plantain wasnt the issue what the issue was, was being disrespected when the host was talking about me behind my back to her co workers. She said some lady came in asking for plaintain and i had to tap the menu. So she was aware of her rudeness and proudly was telling her co workers and one of the co owners was present to this situation. They didnt know I was still there and I notified them that they were talking about me. This was disrespectful and unprofessional. They defended themselves saying theyre doing their job. Yes youre doing your job and I politely said oh sorry and walked away. Your job is also to offer great customer service but turned around and was disrespectful and it wasnt called for. Even in the belitting manner I was polite about it and apologized as I sensed her annoyance. But to be proud of how you disrespected a loyal customer and one who sends alot of customers your way, leaves such a bad taste in my mouth. I will no longer be going to your restaurant and no longer will recommend or suggest going here. Customer service is so vital and networking is so essential to businesses. If you want to complain or make mockery of your customers maybe do it off duty not when your customers can hear!

It was our first time dining at sugarkane. Our reservation was 6pm. Our server seemed flustered and apologized for being short staffed. We ordered the fish cakes as an app and our mains. The sever didnt even offer us some water. After waiting an hour our food had not arrived and during this time our server had not even checked back with us after taking our order. We got the bartenders attention and asked him to follow up with the kitchen regarding our appetizer. He quickly returned with apologies, apparently our mains had been sitting in the back but they had missed our app order. Our food was brought out. The app was good but our mains were extremely salty, specifically the Cajun chicken, salmon and jerk. The pasta was gummy and stuck together probably because it had been sitting in the back of so long. We called our server over to convey our concerns and we asked for an audience with the owner. The owner attended our table and stated that she had sampled all the items in question and they were not salty to her palate. She also added that there had been no complaints during the week about those items. So Im assuming the items arent prepared fresh. (However we did not ask for clarification of this). The owner comped the jerk meal and discounted the other 2 meals. I ordered a replacement salmon because I hadnt eaten all day and was quite hungry, but the replacement was just as salty on the top so I scraped it off and ate the bottom because I didnt want to complain again. The other 2 guest didnt wish for any replacement because at that point we had already waited 1 hour to be served. We didnt even have dessert as we had planned. We wanted to support small black owned business so this experience was not what we expected. The main issue was that the owner invalidated our complaints by saying that no other customers had complained. My throat burned from the amount of salt that was on my meat just after a few bites. We had to call the waiter for water to guzzle. The ambiance of the place was nice overall but we were sweating...not sure if the ac was on but the door was open to the patio so that could have been a contributing factor. The open door meant that we had to battle quite a few flies as well. The bartender was the redeeming factor in all of this, his humor was appreciated. I drove 90mins to the restaurant so it was a bit of a let down. But I would give it a second chance if I were in the neighborhood just to be fair as I know that it could have been a one off.

Much to our dismay, we discovered that our west-end Cajun restaurant shut down, so off we went to Google to find an alternative. And let me just say, SugarKane is WELL worth the excursion to the east end! We dont normally get an appetizer, but the selection was so enticing, we had no choice... and were we ever thrilled that we did. Presentation and flavour were both off the charts fantastic. Oh, and then came the main course... holy foodgasm!! They also make a mean hurricane... even better than anything from New Orleans! The service is top notch, and the environment is cozy, yet lively. And best of, after we finished our incredible meal, one of the owners came around from table to table and chatted with us for quite some time. As fellow foodies, we found her engaging, infectious and someone who truly loves what she does. A very nice touch having the owner do that, not that we needed further convincing to come back here and also recommend it to our fellow west-end neighbours. Well definitely be back soon and are looking forward to trying the Gumbo Ya Ya we discussed!

The only thing was that our waiter was really hard to track down. After our dinner, we all wanted dessert but were unable to get any before they closed because our waiter never came back after clearing our plates. This was around 8, and they closed at 9. December 22, 2023

Last night, my two close colleagues from school, who I havent seen in a while decided to book reservations at Sugar Kane. It was our first time attending this restaurant and we were all very excited to see one another and share a meal to celebrate our successes together. Unfortunately our experience was very unpleasant and I certainly wont forget it, nor will I be coming back here ever again. The evening was going quite well up until one of my friends received her food. She took one fork full (first and only bite) of her meal and was instantly turned off by the flavor. The rice tasted burnt and had really no flavor at all. Immediately we requested that the server come back to the table. Upon arrival to the table, she politely indicated to him (server) that she wasnt pleased with the meal at all and would like to have it sent back and removed from the bill. The server said he would get the manager as he believed she (my friend) would have to still cover 30% of this meal even though she did not want it. When the owner/manager attended our table, she proceeded to tell my friend that she has to charge 30% for the meal because of the products that were used to prepare it in the kitchen. My friend indicated that she wasnt sure why she would have to pay percentage of the price if she had not consumed the meal, and that she had only taken one bite before sending it back. The owner then said Well, you can take it home and let someone else eat it if you dont want it. For very obvious reasons, if my friend didnt think the meal was worthy of eating, why would she want to bring it home for someone else to eat? Realistically speaking, why pass off a horrible meal to someone in her family? My friend decided to take the high road and accept that she would have no choice but to pay the 30% for the meal. She also decided that she still wanted to eat and ordered something else on the menu that she would obviously have to pay for in full. After this simple interaction with the owner, the initial meal was brought to the back and was left there. The energy towards my friends and I shifted completely, as the owner of this establishment went to the back to let her staff know what had happened. We were then given dirty looks by the entire staff, they were talking about us and made it very obvious because of the awkward stares at us when walking by and watching us from the back of the restaurant. After a while, the server eventually came back to ask if we wanted the bill while we werent even finished eating, which gave the sense they wanted us to leave. He brought a plastic bag with the meal my friend didnt want to the table. My friend told him she did not want it and that he can take it back. When he brought it back, the employee with the flower in her hair laughed out loud, I guess it was the professional and ethical thing for her to do in this establishment. I looked at her and gave me a dirty look, rolled her eyes and turned around to whisper to the owner. This entire time, servers walked past our table, staring at my friends plate to see if she was eating the food she replaced with the other one. The owner made it a priority to make us feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed in this establishment all because my friend did not like the meal she was served. The owner sat with her back towards us as she spoke about us with her staff, made us the laughing stock of the evening, and didnt have the decency to come back to us (paying customers) and apologize or try to rectify the situation. To completely ignore customers and turn staff against us because of a simple complaint about food quality, is beyond unprofessional, unethical, and to be quite frank, absolutely disgusting. This type of behavior is unacceptable and immature. The 3 of us are all legal justice professionals, and were quite disturbed by the discrimination that was placed on us, especially by an owner who is black, just like us. We attended the establishment to be supportive of black businesses and to enjoy a moment together, but we were disrespected completely

My two work/school colleagues and I went there on Sept 14, 2023 for dinner. It was our first time at this restaurant, so needless to say, we were excited. My friends arrived after I did so we proceeded to order drinks, appetizers and our entrees. I had the Strawberry Pineapple Mojito... $13. it had very little alcohol in it, but I let it slide and drank it. The appetizers were good Cod Fish Cakes $15, and the Pimento Spinach Dip $18. (We couldnt taste any Pimento, it was ok to eat.) We were enjoying each others company as we hadnt seen each other in a long while. Our Entrees arrived, Jambalaya with rice (mine), Oxtail fusion, and Blackened Salmon were my friends orders. I took one full fork seving of my Jambalaya and immediately I said oh my gosh, something is not right wth this. Its not tasty at all, blandish, a little burnt taste. My friend tried a little of it and felt the same as I. I called our male server and told him that I Could not eat this as it had no taste, something was missing. He told me that I may be charged a 30% charge of the meal because of the ingredients in the food. I said to him, what ingredients? I asked him to get the manager. The manager/owner arrived several minutes later. She didnt even tell us her name. I explained that my meal was inedible and it had no taste, and I couldnt eat it at all. She said sorry, but I will have to charge you a 30% of the cost of the meal ($26×30%). I asked her why, she simply stated that when the food leaves the kitchen that was it. Of course, I took the high road after realizing that she wouldnt budge and was showing us a bit of attitude. Incidentally, I noticed that she paid more attention to other non-black clientele than she did to the black clientele. I know what I am saying because I was there a little while before my friends arrived. My friends and I are legal justice professionals. She, the manager, then proceeded to tell me that I can take Home the not tasty, slightly burnt, bland Jambalaya. Why would I do that if I couldnt even eat two forks full. They took it back to the kitchen. So I ordered the currygoat. It was ok, but yet again, not tasty at all. Wasnt this a Caribbean and Cajun cuisine restaurant? Where were the spices, taste and ummm effect after eating Caribbean food? It was disappointing. At this point another male server/bartender walked by at least twice and specifically looked at my bowl to see if I was eating. All during this time, the other servers at the back of the room by the kitchen were looking at us and talking, laughing as the manager was talking to them about our interaction and disappointment with my meal. I ate 2 pieces of the plantains, and coleslaw and basically picked at my tasteless currygoat. After about 10-15 mins our original male server came by wth the Jambalaya in a plastic bag. I told him to, take it back to the kitchen, I dont want it. I asked him to bring me a paper bag as I noticed that every other person that had take away containers were provided with a nice handled paper bag. I mean, the rudeness and lack of customer service skills! The server did not come at any point while we were eating the appetizers to inquire how we were, seeing that he knew it was our first time there. Seeing as how I was given the bag, we took it we were being told to leave. We obliged because the atmosphere was quite Unprofessional and Toxic. They showed no ethics or professionalism. It was intolerable as one of the female worker in the back snickered and laughed when I told the male server to take back the plastic bag with the Jambalaya in it. I have been to high, and middle end restaurants and I have Never been required to pay a 30% charge if my food was not palatable. They simply took it back and acted with class. The lack of customer service skills, or professional ethics are missing in this establishment when they are challenged about the taste of their food. I am so upset at the treatment we received. It was so disconcerting at our treatment there. Disgusted to say the least.

I went to SK to have dinner with my two classmates from college who I hadnt seen in a while, it was so exciting to finally meet and celebrate together. It was our first time visiting the restaurant. When we arrived it had a nice vibe and the environment seemed welcoming. After catching up for a while we decided to place our orders. We ordered appetizers, drinks, and our main dishes. I ordered the oxtail with rice and peas, Apple slaw, and fried plantain. Blackened salmon and jambalaya were what my other friends ordered. After my friend took a fork from her Jambalaya she mentioned she did not like the taste of her food because it had a burnish and bland taste. We called our server and mentioned to him the food was not tasting right and if she could change her dish to the curry goat instead, he told her she would have to pay 30% for the dish that did not taste good. She asked to speak with the manager/owner. The manager came over and told her about the food she told her she had to pay 30% for the food because of the ingredients they used to prepare the meal. I never heard of such a travesty in any restaurant. She also mentioned that she can take it home and give it to a family member, if youre not enjoying something such as food why would you give it to someone to eat? My friend decided to pay for the food. After all the interaction about the food the manager went back to her staff and started discussing the situation which in turn they started to give us attitude and make the environment uncomfortable as if we were not paying customers. Our experience was so disappointing and uncomfortable. I will never go back to SK to give my support. The staff are very unprofessional, lack professional ethics, good customer service, and disrespectful. From our experience, I would not recommend anyone to visit SK.

Suga Kane - please do better. Sunday Brunch-Sep 17, 2023 Let me start off by staying the atmosphere is beautiful and the staff is lovely however I had the weirdest experience this past Sunday. Keep in mind this is my second time coming to this restaurant (1st time was okay, I had a little issue with a dirty cup but it was quickly taken care off). Let s get back to this past Sunday, I was telling my friends how great the music was and the chicken and waffles I had a few weeks prior, so I did an impromptu met up with a few of my friends (4 black professional women). Anyway, we order our food and everything looked great, until I bit into the doubles remix, it was the most disgusting thing I have every eaten in my life, I automatically spit it out into my napkin (trying not to make a scene) the tamarind sauce was sour and the curry was very strong on the chickpeas and it all tasted quite bitter. Anyways, when the owner came to the table I told her right away about the dish and she apologized and said that weird and took my meal away, she did ask if I wanted a different item I just reorder another serving of fish cakes, however my friend then took that opportunity to tell her about her horrible meal she had the time before the owner apologized to her as well. A few minutes later, she then came back to say yes the meal I had was actually horrible (her words) and they gave me the wrong tamarind sauce and it wasn t fully cooked and she then thanked me for telling her. She even said she has to go around the restaurant and take a few customer s orders back. She then came back to the table and offered my friend who had a bad experience the following week a 25% discount. So I thought she must be covering my appetizer that I got instead of the meal.. NOPE that wasn t the case, nothing was done for me NOT even a free coffee I just saved your restaurant from other customers having bad experience and I bought 2 new customers to your restaurant. Also there wasn t live music this Sunday as advertised. I even gave a good tip to the waiter cause it wasn t his fault and he was lovely. will I go back? Probably not, but I will keep looking for a nice black owned restaurant to do brunch/social events.. do better

Food was soo flavourful I felt like I didnt even need the meat but glad I did anyway because it was delicious. I had the curry goat bowl with the curry chickpea add on and it was amazing. Great flavors paired with one another to give the food a harmonious taste. Nice cozy atmosphere and make sure you pre book a table before you come or you might have to wait a while to get a seat. Live entertainment only on Saturdays. Great vibes and friendly staff. Thumbs up for the visit and I definitely will be returning. Parking: Alot of street parking around.

When I say this restaurant is INCREDIBLE, I truly mean it. We had the fish cakes, the corn, and the waffle slides for apps and Im drooling just thinking about it. I had the jerk bowl, and my two family members had the cajun pasta and we were all raving. Our server was amazing - perfect balance of making sure we had what we needed and giving us space to chat. Everything came out so hot and fresh. The drinks were unique and delicious. Will be back 10000 times. Highly recommend. Didnt grab photos because we were so focused on the food haha.

It was my first visit. I am not sure if I will return. The atmosphere is cool. Once we sat down that where things went downhill. We sat down and ordered out drinks. I had the guava mojito. My party that I was with ordered something else. Their drinks came fairly quick. I had to wait for a long while for mine. The server said I had to wait as they are training someone? By the time I got my drink. It was underwhelming. It was watered down. I told the server she just said the mojito was mostly club soda. I understand that but you still should have the hint of rum which I didn t taste. Eventually she switch my drink for another one. When I ordered something else. Now when it came down to ordering out apps. We placed our orders. Once we are through she asked if we wanted to order our mains.. we said we were still deciding. She made a comment telling us that we basically have to hurry up and order because they re a reservation after us. I was happy with the apps. As for the food. I wasn t happy with my main. It was the jerk chicken fettuccine. I found it very salty and spicy. I didn t finish my meal. I didn t bother sent it back. Our sever gave the impression that she didn t care if we were happy. We asked for our bill. It took her forever to bring the bill. This is the reason as to why I said I am not sure if I will return .

We shared the Spinach Dip appetizer, I got the Jerk Shrimp Pasta and my friend got the Salmon and Cajun Shrimp. You get large portions for the price. The shrimp and pasta were great along with a Guava Raspberry Mojito and for dessert I got the SugarKane Sunday. Will definitely be back.

This place is a vibe. The cocktails were great. So was dinner (we had the oxtail with rice and peas, blackened salmon and mashed potatoes, and I substituted jerk chicken pasta for jerk shrimp pasta. Everything was great in addition to the salted caramel bread pudding for dessert. The in-house DJ played a great selection of soca, reggae, hip hop and r&b while we had dinner. The owner came to our table to check in on us as well. Great experience.

Sugar Kane is a gem in Greektown. I was here meeting the owners for a campaign they were a part of and was blown away by how delicious the food was. I have a low tolerance for food with a lot of heat, and their jerk spice was the perfect blend of heat and incredible flavour. Do yourself a favour and try SugarKane, Ill be back may times. Vegetarian options: The soul bowl is an incredibly tasty dish. I almost prefer it to the jerk chicken bowl.

Our dinner experience at this restaurant was unsatisfactory. Upon arrival, the waiter informed us there was no room for us. After I pointed out the two available small tables, the waiter committed to consulting the owner about seating but failed to return, leaving us waiting for an extended period. Its important to note that we didnt have reservations, but the lack of effective communication and unresolved seating issues made our visit less than enjoyable.

Came here after a friend highly recommended it, and now I know why! As soon as you walk in, it feels like youve stepped into a piece of the Caribbean! Our waitress Sabrina, took very good care of us, and best of all, every single thing we ordered was fresh, cooked to perfection, and uniquely delicious! Plus, as a bonus, from Wednesday to Friday, all appetizers are 25% off from 4 to 6 pm! Honestly, the only downsides this place has are that its closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and is almost always busy, so I strongly suggest that you book a reservation if you want to make sure you have a table, whether youre by yourself or with a group. Otherwise, try to get there as soon as they open at 4, so that you can eat in relative peace and quiet. But with lively music, a tropical atmosphere, and exceptional service, dont expect it to stay too quiet for too long! Oh, and they offer free menstrual pads in their womens washroom!

We were so excited to try this place but unfortunately it absolutely did not live up to the hype. I can definitely give points for the atmosphere and the service was good, but the food really did not meet our standards for the price point. We ordered the jerk fettuccine and the braised oxtail bowl, which the server said were the two most popular dishes. My jerk chicken was dry and the whole dish was just underwhelming for a $26 price point. The braised oxtail was okay but nothing extraordinary especially for $28. Nothing we ate felt elevated or worthy of the hype and the price. We ordered two cocktails, the guava mojito tasted like it didn t have a drop of alcohol in it. The banana cabana was pretty good but not good enough to make us forget everything else. Not sure if I ll be back again as I m feeling extremely underwhelmed. Based on the food I would put two stars but the server was kind and helpful, making suggestions and answering our questions, she checked in with us throughout the meal but we didn t have the heart to tell her how disappointed we were.
