245 Augusta Ave, Toronto, ON M5T 1M5, Canada
Simple Chilean eatery offering meat & vegetable empanadas plus corn pies & sidewalk seating.
The most delicious empanadas, paired with Inka Cola!!! Thank you, Chopsticks and Forks, for taking us there. William was an amazing host.
The menu was available for take out only when we visited. Since my friend was vegetarian, we decided on the vegetable empanada and humita. Both were too light on flavor. Despite being made of ground corn, the humita did not taste enough of the star ingredient (if I'm being generous, some of that could be because I'm used to the flavorful sweetness of Jersey corn, a characteristic that wasn't present in this item). The empanada was hefty and the dough was tasty, but the filling, made mostly of spinach leaves and sliced mushrooms) left a lot to be desired. The spinach inside released quite a bit of liquid that quickly made the dough soggy. Both the leaves and the mushrooms could've used more cooking and seasoning before being wrapped in dough and baked. The vinegary tomato salsa served on the side helped to brighten up the empanada just a little. I'd come back to try the beef empanada since I imagine that one would be richer in flavor.
Good spot in Kensington market, especially if you're looking to do a food-run. Extremely filling empanada: definitely worth the money! Beef empanada is a must-try.
Compared to the empanadas I’ve had in Chile, these are pretty good, I’d rate them (by comparison) a 7/10. They need to figure out how to reheat these properly though. Middle of the beef wasn’t hot but the pastry was very. Worth trying but judging by the review pictures I also think they are raising their prices too often.
I went here in 2019, but my old account got deleted since it was affiliated with a university email address (and I graduated). Nonetheless, I suggested this spot to a coworker who went to Toronto in 2022, and she loved it. So, I know the food is still good.
Follow @bredgyeats for yummy food pictures! You can truly get a jumbo empanada, filled generously with ground beef, onions and olives. The pastry was crisp and not too dry, where you can also douse it in a spicy and tangy tomato salsa.
It was referred to me by a friend from Chile and it did not disappoint. I picked the chicken empanada and 2 of the 3 desserts to take home. The empanada was 1/2 lb and filled with lots of meat and 1 black olive and 1/2 hard boiled egg. Very tasty and filling. Desert was fabulous and gave the other to my friend. Will return very soon to try different dishes. Prices were great!
Really wanted to LOVE this, but the cheese empanadas were just alright for us. Definitely tasty (the crust was good), but was expecting more flavour in the cheese. We also ordered the veggie empanada which was alright - the spinach and mushrooms inside could’ve used more flavour. Otherwise, very friendly staff and cozy decor!
Empanada very average. Was asked if I wanted salsa, I said yes and 50 cents was added to the order. Hard to eat the salsa when walking but it didn t add much. Wouldn t get again
Yummy beef emanadas. The bathrooms are so clean. Appreciate that they take time to make sure they are clean and fresh.
Delicious beef empanadas! Please come and support this local gem
Good empanadas.
Excellent place to get some Chilean food, I love it, It s like being back home for a while.
Unique Chilean Empanadas! Sooo delicious, big portions for the price, excellent service
Excellent food, low prices, informal environment Vegetarian options: Enpanada without meat
Went there, we grabbed a seat and everything looked really good! but had to wait for 10 minutes to order, only for the cashier to slowly walk towards the counter and put a giant only takeout sign in front of me.
100% recommended. Very good service.
A lovely, casual restaurant selling Chilean delights. It was my first time trying Inca Cola and it reminded me of Scottish Iron bru. The empanadas were fresh and hot. I wished Id asked for some salsa, to try it, but also to explore with the empanadas. I enjoyed myself
The empanadas were very fresh and delicious. Great prices and service, definitely will come back!
Great food, friendly staff amazing value. Get many, many cheese empanadas. You will want them. The chicken empanadas are amazing and they have excellent veggie empanadas as well.
Thank you got having chilean food available!!
I eat the cheese empanadas everyday and I seen there was a for sale sign in the front, please do not close my favourite shop down!!!
this place is usually okay but today s cashier was so slow i can t believe i had to wait 10 minutes for one empanada.
Great and very clean especial the bathroom.
Bad experience. Bad manners from the lady who works at the cash register. The empanadas are the worse empanadas that I ever ate. They do not look neither taste as a chilean empanadas. I will not recomend this place to nobody
I went and bought corn cake. Terrible, dry and flavorless, lack of seasonings. In addition, the cashiers attention was very discordant and unprofessional. My first and last experience. I dont know how to recommend it to anyone.
Cashier was super nice, I went there to buy some empanadas for a friend as I was visiting Toronto. Bought empanadas for my friend and was suprised to see a Veggie empanada which I tried and it was so sosososoos good haha. Im travelling away so I gotta find out how to make my own Edit: not good anymore tastes bland
Great Kid-friendliness: Si, puedes ir con niños Food : 5/5 |
Had the corn pie, it was delicious + the empanadas have been delicious Everytime I get it
The worst empanada ever ! Over price and the customer service a joke.
Classic and always tasty. Beef is the way to go.
The beef empanada is full of flavour and portion was decent. Service wasn t the best, the lady working didn t have a smile and I asked her to help cut the empanada in half and then she just told us to do it ourselves. there s also no AC so I would suggest getting takeout and not dining in
Oh maaaaaan I don t know how I haven t reviewed this place yet. Hands down- the best empanadas in the city and they re the sweetest people ever. I always stock my freezer with the chicken and beef empanadas- and get a large container of their salsa because it s also the best. They thaw perfectly and I pop them in the oven to crisp it up and it s perfect.
Before 2020 would go once a month or so Decided to visit since in town, service was awful, food quality has gone downhill, not even real chilean pino (stuffing). Pebre is just pico de gallo (mexican) Would not bother going back for a while. Shame used to be my favorite place in toronto.
Authentic Chilean food made with love! The owner is so sweet and friendly. They have been open for a long time and truly a staple to Kensington. I d recommend the Cheese or beef empanadas, Sopaipillas with the pebre, and the Corn pie (pastel de choclo). It s a must try when stopping by Kensington market!
Amazing Authentic Chilean Empanadas
Not sure what the hype is about? We got the beef and the veggie empanadas, but they were just dry, thick pastries without any flavour.
Visited this place on a food tour and was amazed by how delicious the food was!
Ive been coming to Jumbo Empanadas for over a decade, and it never disappoints. I was at the Salsa in Toronto street festival and wanted some empanadas; however, when I saw the size of the empanadas, I was disappointed. I walked from there straight to Jumbo Empanadas and got a beef empanada with salsa. It was crispy and delicious.
The chicken empanada tasted like yesterdays chicken and vegetable soup sapped out of all its flavour, combined with Pizza Pizza crust. Anyone putting over a 2 only be eating freezer burned pizza pockets 3x a day
It was a bit of a rainy day when we visited so the patio wasn t open, but there would be plenty of seating if it was. Tried the beef empanada and it was great! Note they don t take credit for anything less than $10.
So yummy!!
Ive made it a point to stop in here on every visit to Toronto for the past 25 years. The empanadas are always big, hot, and delicious, and the Chilean salad is always fresh with a generous portion of avocado. Prices are still great after all these years.
Tried for the first time. Found the empenada to be quite tasty. Will visit again.
The spicy salsa is delicious. The dough is soft with a perfect crust. This place has been delivering delicious for over 20 years. An absolute gem if in the market. Grab a cheese and small salsa for just a taste or a beef plus 2 cheese for a lunch.
Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible. Food
Absolutely lovely find for a kiwi looking for pies.. these were traditional and delicious in Kensington market.. really good flavour and value..
delicious empanada, super kind service!! $10 card minimum Food
Small place, The food was warm on outside and cold and tasteless inside. We order : Chicken Empanadas Vegetable Empanadas Cheese Empanadas that one was fine
Love this cute little restaurant, its amazing service, and its delicious food. I would definitely recommend the salad and the chicken empanadas!
The taste wasnt what I expected of a chilean empanada. Very disappointed.
A small empanada spot with some seating areas. They are pretty strict about no outside food and drinks, which is fair. We got the veggie and chicken empanadas to share. Served with salsa, the empanadas are pretty good. The fillings aren t too heavy (mushroom, spinach, tomatos for the veggie and chicken with boiled egg for the other), it s a nice light meal to enjoy while you re out and about at Kensington market.
I have a friend who told me they have never had empanadas before so I took them here because every single empanada Ive had from Jumbo has been delicious. We got 2 beef empanadas with a side of pebre each to go. Service was friendly, the wait was short and the food was amazing. I would highly recommend Jumbo as a must try when in Kensington Market!
Love the empanadas here. Usually take some to go as well and dont forget about the salsa.
Delicious homemade Latino food
The $7 beef empanada was definitely jumbo sized! The dough was great! It had a crisp outside and soft inside, which we liked. The contents were just ok. It couldve used more flavour, and there was only one chunk of boiled egg and olive each, and I prefer smaller pieces that are more dispersed. We also wanted to try the cheese empanada, but they ran out since it was near closing time.
Nice family owned business. Small spot with what seems to be their cultural food. I was looking for empanadas and decided to try this spot out. I tried the beef empanada. I like the pastry, the filling was a bit sweet for my taste but was well done overall.
Lovely staff. And yes, the Empanadas are very jumbo!
Love this place. The interior is cozy and the staff are lovely. Plus the food is bomb. The empanadas are of course delicious and I think itd be crime to come in and not get a little (or the large) tub of their salsa to take home cause its that good.
Delicious product, if you havent tried it, I highly suggest it.
Their empanadas & Corn Pies (Pastel de choclo) are delish - the latter being quite rare to find in any menu. Was told they can make a vegetarian version of their Pastel de choclo if we call in advance, would love to see it as an option in their menu
If you can make it past the weed smell that engulfs Kensington Market you can visit this place for some great Chilean empanadas. A little bit on the pricey side so its a treat every now and then.
It is so delicious and they are so nice I m in love
Delicious
A hole in the wall empanada place with huge empanadas... truly jumbo ... And try their spicy salsa...too good I tried and loved their chicken empanada... Had heard great reviews about cheese empanadas but it wasnt great for the ones l got. Vegetarian options: Veggie empanada, cheese empanada
My sister in law says that Toronto has some great chilean food(my husband is Chilean)... our kids love empanadas, so checked it out...took a cab but when we arrived there were like 6 fire trucks(not sure what happened) but we found the place... its located in Kensington market, cool area... its a very small establishment, with like 4-5 tables... the lady at the front was very nice. The empanadas were very good(personally I prefer my sister-in-laws better) the pebre or salsa was a little too sour but still good.
Everytime I come to Toronto we stop there for corn pie and empanadas. And take some back. So worth the extra drive.
Ive been going to Jumbo for over 5 years and the Empanadas are great but recently, the woman placing the order got it wrong. I ordered 2 beef and 1 chicken for takeout and was billed for this but when I got home and opened the order I received 2 beef and 1 cheese. I guess it was partly my fault for not verifying the order while I was there but we were being rushed since the store was 30mins to closing and we also dined in. I wanted to use the restroom after I finished eating and was told it was closed without even being informed they were closing the restroom in advance. So in summary, I felt the service could have been better.
Every time I visit Jumbo Empanadas, Im amazed by the high quality, love, and care they put into every dish. I would recommend the cheese empanada and humitas (personal preference), but the sopaipillas and beef empanada are above and beyond, according to my Canadian family. If you want to try a piece of Chile, please go and have an incredible time in Jumbo Empanadas Vegetarian options: Vegetarian empanada Kid-friendliness: Super friendly environment
sooo good! we came in right before closing but the woman was super kind and accommodating will definitely be back, earlier this time!
Really great authentic Chilean empanadas. Had the beef, chicken, and cheese empanadas. Each one was better than the next. Fair prices and friendly service, right in the heart of Kensington market.
Flavors were kinda weird, not sure if the food was sitting in their kitchen for too long. Regular empanadas were good and regular drinks as well. Staff was very friendly and Spanish speaker as well Food
Amazing, authentic Chilean empanadas
I tried a few different empanadas - cheese, chicken and vegetable ones. Theyre all freshly made and adding salsa makes them taste better
Delicious beef and cheese empanadas! Served hot and fresh!
Really bad empanadas! Flavorless ground beef in a bread bag! Fix the mix! not even taste like a Chilean Flavor.
Just perfect perfect and perfect. I love this small cute place. Beef and cheese are my favorites.
Underwhelmed.... its so so for me.
Best beef filled empanadas in Toronto
I threw it in the garbage. Waste of money
A longtime favourite of mine.. graet staff, delicious Chilean food.. patio is terrific to dine on, and watch the people of Kensington market go by.. I have had and highly recommend EVERYTHING on the menu! a glass of Chilean wine to hydrate is also a treat!
Ordered catering for our office - quality was amazing and service was very friendly. Empanadas were a big hit!
We went on a food tour in Toronto, and Jumbo Empanadas was one of the stops, and oh my, what a yummy empanada the meat one was just on point and the cheese one oh my with a little bit of sugar which we learned is a customary way of enjoying it. With some of our favorite Inca cola to wet our whistle. I would definitely recommend both visiting Jumbo Empanada and taking a Kensington Market Food Tour
Ive been coming to this place for almost 15 years, and is always great
Authentic Chilean empañadas. The chicken empañadas are my absolute favourite. I buy at least 4 when I get a chance to visit.
Huge empanadas for the price! The name of the store doesnt lie.
Small space with big Chilean flavors! We also enjoy the meat empanadas!
Delicious meat and chicken empanadas
All empanadas we had were delicious, we especially loved the beef one & cheese one.
Love it
Very disappointed that now they charge you for the salsa picante
Great jumbo empanadas. They were soft and very tasty. Two should be enough to feed most hungry folks.
Fantastic authentic Chilean empanadas & delicious food! Cant wait to go back :)
Empanadas look great and really are jumbo sized. We ordered a chicken empanada. It wasnt warmed properly. The inside was cold. Good for take out though.
Great place for empanadas.
Cool place for a snack.
Small place but cheese empanadas with salsa are theee best!
Really good food and a deceit size and good value
Have been coming to this place for years. Always consistently great. The food is delicious and fresh and the service is friendly and quick.
This place was recommended by a few forums, but it was very underwhelming. The portions are very generous, but beef empanadas were cold inside. The cheese one was okay, nothing special. Cheap and nice cozy spot, but food is not so great.
Excellent empanadas, keep coming back, very delicious.
Still love them. I loved these empanadas 25 years ago when I lived in Kensington. Im not in Toronto anymore but I go back all the time to taste that nostalgic flavor. They are always delicious. Never disappointed. Its a great sign that they have been in business all these years. I love the hot salsa. I always ask for extra haha.
Was really excited to try this place. The cheese empanadas were good. Greasy and sweet, but good. Got two jumbo empanadas (beef & veggie), by the time we got to the park across the street they had leaked through the paper bag and down both our legs. One soaked through and fell out of the bottom of the bag completely and onto the ground because of the grease/oil. We tried to salvage the second one but would have needed a bowl/spoon and unfortunately had to throw it out. My legs are still sticky. Really disappointed.
Recommended by my Chilean friend a while ago. Came with a friend visited from Mtl and he loves the corn pie! I did too XD
Rico
I got the Beef Empanada. Agree with other reviews, it was very bland. It s like they forgot to add the flavour. Also the addition of olives and boiled eggs was weird and did not work. I didn t enjoy it, and at $8+ for a bland pasty I felt conned. Don t understand hype, maybe the cheese one is better?
Tasty empanadas, nice and friendly service
I love the food at this restaurant but I ordered like 50 dollars worth of empanadas and they didn t give me any salsa to eat with them. And I was disappointed. However the food is great.
Best Chilean empanadas in Toronto
Good small local spot in trendy Kensington Market area. Empanadas were nice, partner got the beef which was tasty; the vegetable one was good but a lot of mushroom!
Rich, but nothing spectacular Very friendly Although the vdd are at a very good price and chubby
Great service. Food was fresh and authentic.
Great taste
I love the empanadas and the salsa is fantastic. Great customer service from very friendly people. This shop is an iconic part of the legendary Kensington Market. You must try it out.
I have been coming here for over 10 Years! but it only takes one time to never want to come back......I came in today to get some food to eat it inside. Walked inside the place and there are limited seats, also the girl in the front advised me that they are on Limited Capacity, which does not make any sense. A family comes in with their abnoxious kids and takes over the few remaining seats and chairs. Instead of having them sit at all around table and MAXIMIZING the seating space they spread out and leave no seats for anyone else when they could have PERFECTLY sat using their double tables. Waitress comes back to toss me the empanadas in bag saying there is no seating space and to wait outside. Instead of arranging for the guest to sit efficiently like every other restaurant does she just looks at my clueless.Establishment has gone downhill, lazy staff that wont even put chairs or table on the patio...
-Bad Service today, -Server was not able to organize the guest to sit them efficiently inside the restaurant. -Said they are at limited capacity! -Patio has no chairs and tables.
I NEVER thought I would have to write a bad review about this place. Was not able to sit inside today because the girl working the restaurant was not able to have the guest sit together. She insisted about a capacity limit but its just an incompetence of the place. This kind if business would not survive anywhere else with the level or service. Its just that its in kensignton.
Place is mismanage and has gone downhill from its earlier days. Staff is not able to organize the guests in the establishement. There are like a total of 5 chairs in the place. Its April 9th 2022 and the girl told me they are running on limted capacity. What kind of business chooses to run at limited capacity? Its mind boggling. This is something that they choose to do not something that is mandated.
You cant go to Kensington market without eating at Jumbo Empanadas. Love this place so much! The staff are lovely and the food....everything is delicious!!
Real deal Chilean empañadas. Family operation. Great place to grab a bite and go for a walk in Kensington Market.
This place is always great. Love their Chillian empanadas.
Good empanadas and friendly staff
Great restaurant
Incredible authentic empanadas, and always friendly service.
Ordered the chicken and the beef empanadas and loved them. The whole olive was an unexpected, pleasant surprise. We had fussy eaters in our group who surprisingly ate the whole empanada and now we all want more. Loved the salsa too, layers of flavour sour, spicy and tangy but not overwhelming. Can t wait to go back. I see a few comments about limited seating/capacity restrictions and all I can say is we ve all had different experiences these last two years so let s be kind and patient with each other while we come to terms with it.
My go to place for Empanadas, I cannot recommend it enough. Definitely don t skip on the salsa!
Excellent empanadas our favorite is the jumbo beef, chicken and cheese. Service is always friendly and you can dine in. Check it out!
Not my type. Very diff from what we had in Mexico. Worth a try. The cheese ones are really nice.
I had the jumbo chicken empanada and my wife got the jumbo veggie empanada and they were both amazing! The staff was very polite and the restaurant had a nice vibe.
I highly do not recommend this restaurant their is a young lady , her is Cathy who works there . She is extremely rude and lacks education and morals. Just by her vibe I just didn t even want to buy anything by the way she spoke to me .
I had the chicken empanada and it was really good, the breading was fresh and crispy, and the chicken was flavored nicely! The best part was the price, an empanada (with spicy salsa dip) and a drink for just over 10 bucks
This is one of my favourite places in the city! The service is amazing and the food is always outstanding. Love the empanadas and the salsa. I ll be sure to come back soon
Very busy place, very long wait for dining in or food to go (really no difference). Empanadas are definitely jumbo but the taste was nothing to write home about. Cheese empanadas do not come in jumbo size.
This is a uniquely wonderful Chilean empanada restaurant is a family business Ive been going to since it was up the block in a basement in the 90s and the young woman who served me there on Thursday was in her mothers arms as a newborn. Great business. Great family. I no longer live anywhere near this place, but I go back to the market just for these.
Amazing empanadas! What sets them apart are their excellent portions and great tasting fillings! Pairs really well with their in-house salsa. Friendly staff as well. Vegetarian options: One vegetarian jumbo empanada option, and one small cheese empanada option.
Nice place and staff. The empanada itself we got the vegetarian one and felt it missed flavour, it was really flat. Dough was flavourful, but we got takeaway and it started leaking at the bottom, so not that easy to eat.
One of my go-to favourites. I love the chicken and beef empanadas with the Pico de gallo, as well as the corn pie.
The empanadas are delicious. You cant eat just one. Meat and cheese are my favorites. It was busy but the owner served us with a smile all the time. Thank you very much I cant wait to return.
The food was good, but it wasnt a real Chilean empanada. Also, the people there didnt speak Spanish to recreate the Chilean culture. The location and settings were great, but they need to consider more elements from the Chilean culture as language, and popular beliefs.
My go to when I go to Kensington, have been coming here for years Love their empanadas. I get the beef and cheese ones!
Delicious
Have been coming to this place for yearssss and is always good to see that they maintain the quality of the empanadas......year after year there are delicious.....as like the first time I tried
They are delicious Chilean empanadas, the people are very friendly and helpful. My husband has known this place for years and says it still has the same good flavor, for me it was the first time and I loved it.
an all-time favourite!
Best empanadas in Toronto other then my abuelitas!
These empanadas are no joke. Inflation and gentrification have ruined some things in Kensington, but this place still goes hard. It truly lives up to its name. For about $8 or $9 (after tax/tip), you can get a big, phat empanada with fresh salsa on the side. The shell is baked to perfection and the filling is fresh and tasty. The way they bake them makes them look ~30% more puffed up then what they actually contain (is that just how they do it in Chile?), but I assure you youll still be full after eating one of these monster-sized empanadas. The food is delicious and reasonably priced and the service is fast and friendly. You cant go wrong. This is one of my go-to cheap eats places in Kensington and, once you try it, itll be one of yours too! Grade: A.
Ive been coming here since the very beginning and have always loved all the food on their menu. I had a veggie empanada today - and it was way better than I ever remember! They added some extra special ingredients that made the flavour pop. I love that this place is a staple in Kensington Market - that theyre always fresh, tasty and provide fast, friendly service.
They really are massive (and delicious), dont let their price (absurdly good value) fool you into thinking theyre small. You probably cant eat two in one sitting, but youll want to try
Terrible experience! We called in an order the day before and when we got to the place there was nowhere to park close by so we had to walk to get there but this isn t their fault. However, once there we paid $70 for 13 cheese and pino (meat) empanadas! Now if they were all the same size (about 6 x 4 ) then it would have been acceptable but the 6 cheese empanadas were about 3 x 2 and gone in about 2 bites! Then to top it all off they gave part of our order away because they thought we weren t going to show. I highly recommend going elsewhere for your empanadas because you ll way over pay for very small empanadas and they will give away part of your order. Now, because today is the 18th (Chile s Independence Day) we don t have enough empanadas for the guests we have invited over for dinner and a party! Thanks very much JUMBO Empanadas (what a joke for a name) for ruing what was suppose to be a traditional 18 of September party!
Been so many times and we re never disappointed. So kind and amazing food
First time having it. I got the beef. Very very disappointed. Jumbo dry dough with barely any meat inside and zero flavor.
Very good
Decent vegetarian empanada, but not my favourite. I went here years ago before going veg and remember the meat ones being awesome. I liked the cheese one I had too. Good salsa. Nice staff. Not the best space.
A perfect grab-&-go snack. The cheese empanad is a 10/10 guilty pleasure ... and that salsa . Veggie & Beef empanadas were HUGE! I found the mushroom/spinach combo in the veggie option held too much liquid, but still a solid 7.5/10. My partner loved the Beef!! 100% reccomened -cant be the price!
nothing special
Good place, the best is the corn cake!!
Best empanadas ever.Nice place and people are very friendly and kind
Love this place. The empanadas de pino (beef) take me back to my childhood. The humitas and pastel de choclo are to die for
Empanadas for a good price. Accidentally stepped on a mouse trap in their bathroom
Been going here for 15 years, and its consistently been one of the best places to get a bite in Kensington market. Is a must try!
The Empanadas here are AMAZING! I had the chicken jumbo empanada and the cheese empanada. The Jumbo was stuffed full with deliciously seasoned chicken. The cheese was on another level. Definitely recommend.
I have been coming here off and on for a few years now. I absolutely love this place! When i cant make empanadas I come here! They have amazing tasting food from back home! The food is full of flavors and smells remind me of all the great food back home! Great portions! Will keep coming back!!! :D
Salsa is A+++ Cheese empanadas are a guilty pleasure. Staff are very kind. Food : 5/5
The cheese empanadas with the salsa is so seriously good wow wow no notes
Always a favourite! Great for take home or eat in!
