235 Carlton St., Toronto, ON M5A 2L2, Canada
Tiny, unpretentious counter-service restaurant serving up hearty portions of Chinese favorites.
Wonderful family owned Chinese restaurant. The food and service are both great.
Absolutely unprofessional. Accidentally ordered online to this location though Uber eats. Immediately realized it was the wrong location and called and told them to cancel the order. Literally less than 15 seconds of ordering. Then was told it needs to be canceled through Uber eats. Messaged Uber eats immediately and they said that because the restaurant started to prep the order, they can’t refund. Even though we never received any food and there is no way that they started the order within 15 seconds. Found out the restaurant still charged the credit card. Called to fix the problem and was told it’s not their issue, it’s Uber eats. Called Uber eats and they said it’s the restaurant’s issue. So I got charged for food that was never made.
The Chow mein noodles were not even cooked in some areas! It was is they just jumped hot boiling sauce on top of the noodles. The vegetables were not fresh. It went straight to the trash to avoid food poisoning. A sad waste of money. 😢
This place used to serve really good authentic Chinese food. But over the years it's really gone downhill. The sweet & sour sauce for the chicken balls was so watered down that we couldn't eat it. The chicken balls themselves were way over battered with just a tiny bit of chicken in the middle. The rest was ok but pretty much flavorless. We noticed this last year when we ordered and this year was no better if not worse. Sorry china gourmet. I'll be ordering my traditional new years meals elsewhere from now on.
For the Cabbagetown/St. Jamestown/Upper Jarvis/The Village neighborhoods, this is a very good option for Chinese food. Every meal has been consistent, flavourful and prepared well. Large portions are great when sharing or when you save some for another day. Fast service for pick up and delivery. This isn’t fancy or high-brow dining, either delivered or dining in, but it hits the spot when you’re hungry.
Undercooked and over-rated. For $45 I got vegetable chow mein, and the black pepper shrimp delivered. Chow mein was hot, but very very soft, and the vegetables were as if they had been in a soup for a week. I had to re-fry this dish at home and strain it. The shrimp was fine, but the dough it was fried in is raw inside.
Right in my neighborhood. Food is phenomenal. Prices are very reasonable and made to order with large portions. Cozy place to eat in as well. Very clean. Very nice people. This is my GO-TO spot. Eating leftovers as I type. Even better the next day. If I could give 10 stars I would.
There is a fine, fine line in dumpling making, where especially, in pan fried dumplings, one must cook it enough to have a delicate crunch while not over frying or burning the delicate food in the slightest. And this place has found the perfect center. I love trying dim sum, and this place blew it out of the park. I instantly was wooed as I enjoyed the slightly oily, comforting taste of the dumpling in my mouth. More so, the crunch and exquisite taste of the fried elements. It was paired with a simple, delicious sauce. I had the wor tip? I believe. Absolutely amazing. Paired with that, I ate chicken and corn soup. A thick soupy base paired with the light taste of corn, egg and steamed chicken made it feel truly homemade. It was comforting and made me feel at home. Due to skyrocketing inflation, this store has been forced to bring up it's prices. Inflation is rising so quickly it's menus haven't yet changed at the time of this review. But, you are still getting a bargain deal! It breaks my heart to see this store struggling so immensely due to lack of customers and neck breaking rise in costs, especially this this store has been here for so long. So please, check out this store! You won't be displeased!
Prices are rip off also argued that they said menu prices are not the price. Rip off joint Food
bad experience
Great take out, the salt and pepper shrimp, hot and sour soup, and spring rolls are excelent
Good prices, delicious food, and truly excellent service. Kid-friendliness: They dont have high chairs, but were so helpful and found plastic glasses for our two toddlers. We chatted with the woman at the counter about her niece and nephew who are a similar age.
good food with reasonable price!
Absolutely expensive for the amount of food. I ordered dinner for 2 It was barely enough for one person. Compared to other restaurants the prices are NOT REASONABLE POOR QUALITY IN FOO WILL NEVER ORDER AGAIN FROM HERE
Dingy spot, but the food is great
The food here is great. The chefs specials are good. Food is healthy and nutritious.
My local go to place. Recommend.
Best Chinese food around, lemon chicken is awesome
Fried rice and hot and sour soup are the best. They are what I order most. We are regulars. Vegetarian options: praise! Very delicious
By far the BEST Chinese food I ve had in the city! I have ordered from them every time I have a Chinese food craving over the past 7 years and always have enjoyed their amazing food and fast service. I highly recommend China Gourmet
This is a family owned business, please support them! I ve been a regular here for 7 years and never had a bad meal. Service is so fast, food is always tasty.
Best restaurant and very and I mean very good people and the family is awesome
worst service
Terrible food and service, dont go. Salty food
This place needs a customer service cleaning. Whoever the owner needs to take recollection of their store
Best Chinese takeout in Toronto! Been eating here for 10+ years!!
This is my go-to for take out Chinese. I am always happy with what I get from there. Especially love the Singapore noodles.
Horrible place to get Chinese food. Absolutely most mushy disgusting rice Ive ever had, everything else is subpar almost taste like the actually cooked at the day before and they are saving food to be able to save on money. Absolutely horrible food do not buy anything from this restaurant it is not fresh whatsoever horrible horrible food
The food is great and well priced, I went back for seconds and found that the second time was better than first time. Location is the limitation unfortunately much like my no frills review Dietary restrictions: I noticed some dishes suitable for those with dietary restrictions, although I cant explain in detail as I never ordered those Kid-friendliness: Has good seats, not much traffic in and out and friendly staff
Ordered the chicken cashew veg w/ a side of rice. The cashew chicken was good but the rice was overcooked and glutinous. Ive eaten here over several decades and has been a hit or a miss.
Good food fast!
Used to be great. They ve changed all of their products for something cheaper - while raising the prices. Nothing is good anymore and they d rather give away the food for free than let you have a set of chopsticks. Do not waste your money. Literally every other Chinese restaurant is better.
Great prices, great service.
I love this place, fresh food, very quick, I dont think anything could be better!
Ordered cantonese chow mein from here. My experience was bad. Chicken not cooked properly, veggies like brocolli peppers and all are raw not boiled properly. Too soupy. I am a regular customer of yorkmills branch , expected the same taste but this branch is horrible in taste.
The food was delicious, I ordered, chicken ho fon with soya, chicken vegetables & noodles
Great service good food
Good food. Fast and reliable. Im a regular.
Ate here a few times as its by my work. They have amazing food for a really good price. The lady who works at the front is super nice as well.
My favourite Chinese food place in the area. The person operating front cash is very friendly too :)
One of my best places to eat
Good food
This used to be my go to Chinese delivery when I lived in the neighbourhood. I always miss it when Im in the mood for chinese. The portions are big, and the prices are cheap. We would regularly order the lemon chicken (so crispy), chicken balls (great chicken to batter ratio! so many places have way too much breading), pork fried rice, beef lo mein, wonton soup, spring rolls and egg rolls. Their food was always delicious and consistent. The only thing I wish they had is onion pancakes.
Love this place, however its closed due to COVID.
This place has a great selection of delicious foods. The peanut chicken or tofu are especially good. Great portions and quality.
Food was burned and the sauce lid was not put on properly. Bag was full of sauce on the bottom that had leaked out.
For what it is, it isnt bad. I got take-out. Large amount of food for the price. But my vegetable fried rice seemed somewhat stale & reheated. There was also not a lot of meat in the BBQ Pork Chop Suey. I will try again next time I am craving Chinese, but you get what you pay for and it isnt always possible to go all the way to Chinatown.
Lack of Choice in Cabbagetown for good Chinese.
China Gourmet. More like a bunch of Chinese that dont know how to cook good Chinese food. Dont waste your money . Buy something better. Also they dont know how to treat their drivers and customers. Bland food with no good taste. Sorry your rated a 0 star. I tasted better Chinese food around my corner will never order from here again.
the quality of the food for the price is outstanding would recommend for a quick spot to sit down to eat or call and pick up
Great food and quick service!
Nice local restaurant.
Excellent prices
My goto place for Chinese food. Fast, fresh, tasty, affordable.
Im giving China Gourmet takeout 4 stars because it delivers in quantity and flavour. The service was efficient, fast and its a nothing fancy place. Food was good.
Great prices and great portions. Staff is very friendly, dine in and take out are both very exceptional. Have been multiple times and is one of my favourite restaurants around.
Really good and decent prices on Chinese food.
Delicious food. Friendly staff. Great prices.
The worst Chinese food Ive ever eaten. Their szenchuan chicken is a breaded and mushy porridge that is stuck together. There was no peanuts and it is not spicy at all. The food is really really bad.
Never order their Szechuan chicken. I shouldnt even be calling it chicken.
The lady there she is great
Good food reasonable prices
Chicken was crispy and fresh. They even had fresh mangos for the dish.
Their food is great, really the healing kind for this time of the year!!!
I eat here on the regular. Its cheap and close to work. The food is some of the best budget chinese food Ive tasted. I wish they delivered to my house. Cant go wrong with any of the combo dishes. The hot and sour soup is more brown than id like but the wonton soup is excellent. The ambience could use a touch of paint and a little more of a vibe but it does the trick for a quick hot meal. If youre in Cabbagetown and want a decent meal at a decent price, this is the place.
Love this place
So great food was on point
Really rude driver tainted my experience with this place, and I think its been my go to Chinese delivery for about 6 years. Opened the door and immediately out of his mouth, are you not going to tip the driver? There was confusion on our part as we had ordered off Just Eat. This selfishness is appalling. Tipping is not a given - pay your drivers.
I would hardly say gourmet. Average stuff not naw dropping love at first bite food. But will fill a hungry belly....
The last time i ordered food from this restaurant.. i was extremely disappointed. I usually order the same manu so i know the different. Since then i stopped buying anything from there. It was about the chicken wings. I called to address my concern then they treated it as trash. So thats it.
They have an old price shown
Over charge the food and unwilling to pay back. They didnt change the price at the counter and expect us to know they have increase the price. Pretty bad attitude. Food is just average.
Good
China Gourmet gave me FOOD POISONING! When I called to tell them and try to get a refund, they refused to acknowledge that it was their food that gave me food poisoning even though that was the only food I had had today and at all since 3pm yesterday. I was vomiting and had diarrhea splayed all over my bathroom. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!
My fav Canadian style Chinese meals, free delivery. Dinner for 2 is our go to when we are lazy!
your food is great and the service is very friendly and fast.
Very friendly staff and great food . Also very fast delivery.
The chicken balls, cantonese lo mein noodle, chicken fried rice, 7 egg rolls, chicken wings and fried shrimp was excellent. And well priced. Beverages not bad.
Went in with 3 friends for takeout. Was standing at the counter looking at the menu and deciding what to order for take out and one of us went to use the washroom only to be told bathroom only for paying customers ... what do you think we were doing?
Great Food AND good service
Perfectly good takeout for a lazy night in! The Schezuan sesame beef is amazing, the Cantonese chow mein is delicious; chicken balls and chicken-fried rice are good staples. The spring rolls werent very good, but I dont care enough about those to take off any points.
Great portions!
Good North American Chinese cuisine. Family run business. Both takeout and dine in available.
Fast, classic dishes, adept staff
They dont deliver 20 mins away from the Carlton location. LOL. Better service when i lived closer to the Yorkmills location and i was still 20 mins away from that one. Oh well good thing there are plenty Chinese Restaurants to choose from. ;)
u get what u expect, maybe...
Clearly under new management and its not a change for the better. My goto is S&S Chicken Balls. They are still good but the accompaniments have gone downhill. The Egg roll is much smaller, with less filling and a bland taste. The rice was actually hard (undercooked? old?) either way difficult and unpleasant to eat. I even found a swirl of metal in the bean sprouts. Sorry to say this local spot that was always know for good, affordable, typical Chinese food is no longer any of those things. :(
It has good food and reasonable prices. Friendly staff.
CAUTION: Food quality is nothing like the York Mills location. That location is fresh, plentiful portions and tastes good. Ive been here 3 times, gave it 2 chances thinking it was just a bad day. Wrong will never go back the foot quality is bad and horrible small portions.
Food is delicious and portion sizes are generous. Prices have risen a bit over the last few years, but the quality of the food is great. Crispy ginger chicken is awesome.
Fast and a good price. Pretty average Chinese food but its a great little place for take-away if you live in the neighborhood.
Its ok for price to portion size ratio compared to other places around the area. Food tastes ok, average
This used to be my favourite restaurant for take out but, the cooking has gone down hill. I am allergic to MSG (OK, I know dont order Chinese), but they have in the past prepared dishes for me, this is NO LONGER TRUE.They PROMISED no MSG in the Cantonese Chow Mein it was dripping in it, the Egg Fu Yung was under cooked on the inside and burned on the outside, Ho Lee Chow you have a new customer!
Ordered delivery. Great quality, tasty and good portion sizes. I had expected tiny bits of meat you get from some takeaway Chinese, but was surprised with lots of juicy chicken and beef. 10/10 will order again
DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE!!! Ordered chicken ball,s general Tao tofu, 2 egg rolls, 4 spring rolls and an order of vegetable fried rice. Clearly stated each order over the phone along with the associated menu number. We received steam vegetable instead of the fried rice and the food was stale and not very appetizing. The chicken balls were so hard in certain areas it was difficult to cut through them with a steak knife. Eating them were out of the question. I called the back to let them know of the error, they proceeded to tell me I must have said it wrong and reluctantly agreed to send the fried rice (25 min later after our meal was done). When the rice finally arrived it was not the vegetable steam rice we requested but one with chicken and beef and shrimp. Unfortunately my fiancée is vegetarian and the rice was for her. When we called a second time they were incredibly rude, telling us again that we said the order wrong. My fiancée and I were both present each time we told them we wanted the vegetable fried rice with the corresponding order number. They then told us well were not doing anything else. I can understand mistakes happen but it was the completely unprofessional and horrendous customer service that will ensure I will never order from here again.
Large and cheap portions, great for some quick take out. Staff always friendly.
Very good
Love the food. Love the lady that works the counter. Never had a problem. My FAVOURITE dish is the Buddhist Delight and of course Dim Sum whenever I want? Best. Place. Ever.
Terrifyingly poor service - the driver was rude, slow, and incompetent. Not only could he not follow very clear instructions to find an apartment unit, he later screamed at me, claiming that he had called me many times before flashing some obscene gestures. I immediately went to check that I had provided the correct information. I did, and I received no calls in that time... Cultural relativism is one thing, but if you choose to join the service industry in a city like Toronto, please learn some manners. Food was OK tho.
Update. Third order review**** Ordered again while having guests over and waited over an hour for the food. When I called to see if it was on the way, I was told they didnt have any recollection of my order so when I repeated my order again to them, some new woman said it was now on the way. When I asked if she was lying to me and they were just NOW making the food, she responded with an extremely rude and abrupt No and hung up. The order then arrived 30 mins after the second phone conversation. Judging by the number of mistakes this restaurant makes according to these reviews, this company needs to find a better system because there is constant lack of communication. First order review******Just ordered from them and was told it would arrive in 45 minutes. Took less than 30 and the food is delicious + cheap. Highly recommended them.
Always hot n fresh
OK food! Service OK!
food came on time, the food was enjoyable.
Food is always served hot - daily special General tso chicken $7.95
Love the food. Still dont understand why we werent able to use our credit card at the desk when its clearly marked VISA and MASTERCARD on their take-out menus. (But for some reason we could use our credit card over the phone.) They were pretty rude about it especially when I pointed it out. Weird.
Very friendly staff. They agreed to deliver even though we were quite a way away. The food came quickly and was delicious. After some disgusting food from a different establishment, I was trying to find a go to chinese take away...... well......... Ive just found it. Thank you guys. Oh, and the portions are huge, well be having it for dinner tomorrow night as well.
Honestly the best Chinese food Ive had while living in Toronto. Their spicy wings are the best....that is when they make them.
great! always fast, hot, really cheap and big portions - love the place
Good food. Easy and fast for take out or delivery.
Hey sent order, 2 weeks ago for Dai Dop Woy,-Cantonese Chow Mein,- & wings,- delivered,-cost 40$ was garbage. Overcooked, old even the wings were dry, overcooked, pork was like leather totally inedible. Overcooked, too many onions, not even chopped properly! They were once really good & fair now its just left overs.
Cheap. Consistently yummy and big portions. Id eat here every day!
