1572 Bloor St W, Toronto, ON M6P 2B2, Canada
This snug, no-frills neighbourhood Chinese eatery boasts an open kitchen & traditional dishes.
Food was sub-par all around. The chicken entree we got was texturally off & had too much sauce & the spring roll was not what I was expecting with a twinge of sweetness to the breading. Won’t be back anytime soon
I got the general tsoa chicken and I am in disbelief... I have never had chicken this good from ANYWHERE. It is literally melt in your mouth. I'm amazed. Number ONE Chinese I've ever had.
Really good shrimp fried rice. I was surprised to find that the chicken pad Thai was tomato based - more like spicy spaghetti so wouldn’t get that again. We only got those two mains so that’s all I can comment on. Lady working there is quite nice. Note - pickup only - No delivery
The owners are such nice people, and they make great comfort food. Their pork fried rice is my fave in Toronto, and I could eat the wonton soup every day. The sweet and sour chicken balls are also super tasty. The restaurant itself isn't fancy, but I couldn't care less about that. It does the job. Great food, great people!
Solid Canadian Chinese food, very fair prices and the portion sizes were enough to feed three people with three dishes and have leftovers. I can't get over how many reviews mention long wait times and terrible service. Had no issue phoning in my order at 7pm on a Friday night, my food was ready in 20 minutes and pickup was a breeze. Recommend the following dishes: Chicken Lo Mein, BBQ Pork Rice, and Beef with mixed vegetables. Spring rolls were fine.
Came here for lunch , and they have an amazing deal for lunch. $8.99 for a selection of food (there was 10 items to choose from), which all comes with soup, egg rolls, and rice. I wasn't a big fan of the rice but everything else was superb. The workers were friendly and very kind.
Family-run restaurant, very cozy and friendly atmosphere. We always order chicken fried rice, hot and sour soup. After 6 PM, street parking is free. Feel comfortable to tell the owners your preference of tastes. They can satisfy your appetites.
Terrific food. A flavourful interpretation of Canadian Chinese cuisine. I highly recommend. We had a pepper and onion beef dish that was super satisfying. The egg rolls ( spring rolls ) have the perfect filling. Service is down to earth and very friendly - a wonderful welcoming experience. We lan to return often.
Ppl want to talk down Chinese food. I had a good spot. Since I moved into the neighborhood I will say this is BY FAR the best Chinese food ever!!!!These are good ppl husband and wife and I m NEVER disappointed
Great takeout spot. The crispy chicken with lemon sauce is amazing.
Food is GOOD
Even thought it s a take out only place, the food has been fresh, made in the moment, tasteful and abundant!
Honestly not great. But not terrible. It s giving cafeteria quality.
You dont need to even see the food to know its good you can tell by the sun bleached menu bord and wall paper its the real deal good people good food hands down best food in Toronto
Its hard ti find old school Chinese Canadian food at decent prices. This is the only one in the area. Food is good and portions are good too
Great food! Terrible service! Waited over an hour for only wonton soup, and they were extremely rude... was told 15 minutes, and they were not busy at 10 pm on a Thursday night. I support local businesses and try my best to be understanding with delayed orders (Ive worked in the food/service industry for a long time myself).. but an hour for wonton soup ?!? Ive been here multiple times before and always got the same delays and rude service... is it really worth the trouble? There are many other great places to go with better service. Also, the lids are not on properly so soup spilled all into the bag looked into the bag and the lids dont even fit the containers. P.s. OVERLY SALTED. WOW! I love salt... but this was OMG! Had to dilute it with water.. disappointed as they usually have great food.
Wonderful family-run restaurant. I dont live in the area but stop by when passing through for classic Canto/Canadian food!
Very bad place
The Beef & Broccoli and Seafood Fried Rice are 2 of my many favourites at China Island. The owners are hard-working good cooks! I highly recommend. Before c-vid you could dine in which is always better than take out! Vegetarian options: There are plenty of Vegetarian options. Tasty home cooked food! Parking: There are a number of paid parking spots in front of China Island and the next block west on both sides of Bloor St W.
I would suggest to stay away from this place its cheaper yes then most places, but thats for a reason I order General Tao chicken, all I got was fried breaded pieces with no meat and the best part she throw in chicken balls has substitute for real chicken meat. STAY AWAY !! FROM THIS PLACE Then my Cantonese noodles had barely any noddles and was full of celery only, when I paid for mixed meats and shrimp. I got one piece of each meat pork, chicken , shrimp it was sad man to see how she robbed me, this was the worst Chinese food I ever had in Toronto.
Take out only.
You have three choices here, 1) late 2)burnt 3) sick Been going here for years, but she is just so. rude. One time, I was told 40min for pickup. showed up after 50min, and she didnt even start cooking! I asked how much longer, and she said some of her customers wait 1.5 hours, and wouldnt give me an ETA. The last time I got food poisoning.
I just called to place an order she was very rude when I asked for delivery. When I called back to place my order for pickup she hung up òn me after I asked why the order was so much. She is very rude. She should not be taking calls with an attitude like that. I wouldve taken the food regardless of the cost but she hung up on me. Very unprofessional
Great food an portions very good
Bruh
Best Chinese food in town
Hands down the best home cooked Chinese food there ever was. You dont go to sit inside these days but this is there most amazing take out food youll ever get. Thank you for this gem! Highly recommend and highly appreciate!
Without question the best Chinese food Ive had in the city. Amazing variety, quality is bang on every time, and the owners are lovely. Its the only place I trust for consistency!
Great service and great food
Would have loved to order and judge food/service correctly. Google says they deliver. I just called and was briskly told pick-up only. I cant offer that as an edit on google though so review it is apparently.
Ordered a chicken fried rice and wings. The wings were ok - were saltier than dried fish but they were ok. The fried rice was the worst ever I had. I literally had to throw it away due to the stink!
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant. Food is delicious. If you like hot and sour soup you must try theirs its the best I have ever tasted
They are a classic chinese restaurant with all the dishes you would expect - and theyre fantastic! HOWEVER - the only dish I recommend you skip would be the General Tsao. It was basically breaded chicken in the chicken ball sauce - bright red and sweet just like chicken ball sauce lol. Overall, great food !
Best takeout Chinese at affordable prices
Nice food at low price.
My Chinese restaurant for 40 years. Food is wonderful, and service is great. Same people. Eating in very basic, but dont be put off by decor.
The food is ok, but could be better.
I found it. The worst Chinese in Toronto? Paid 25 cad for soup and general Tao chicken. The chicken felt like it immediately hurt my stomach and the soup was simply enidble.
Best chicken wonton soup! Order every single weekly for my family and I soo good
I like their taste, rices is very good really
Classic Chinese Canadian food. Super comforting and delicious. Not alot of spots like this in Toronto let alone Southern Ontario anymore. A gem.
Good food, large portions, and fast pick-up times. However, prices more expensive than regular Canadian Chinese food. This definitely has to do with Covid-19 and inflation. I will still order from them because the quality and portion size of food far outweighs the prices.
My go to place. I ve been going here for 25+ years. Always made fresh and the owners are lovely.
I just had what I can honestly categorize as the worst food ever. The general Tao chicken had literally no chicken it it. There were some pieces that were just fried dough and other pieces that had the texture of something that had been deep fried about 5 times and then microwaved for 15 minutes on high. The beef with Chinese vegetables lo main had mushy noodles, celery as the only vegetable, and some sort of protein that I cannot guarantee with beef. I didn t expect some world class dinner, but please don t just throw absolute garbage into a container and charge people for it. If I wasn t so tired from a long week I would have returned all the food out of principle. Instead I ll be throwing it in the garbage and never going back to this place.
The best Chinese food ever tasted in Toronto. 100% authentic flavors. The place is pretty clean, and you can feel like in China since its attended by their owners in a very friendly and familiar way. As well, you can place orders for take out, and depend on how busy they are in 10 min you will be able to pick it up. Last but not least, the BBQ pork fried rice and the beef and broccoli are my favorite dishes in the restaurant, 100% recommend. The cherry of the cake is that the spring roll costs $1
This place is a gem!
The food is dry and the person there has an awful attitude.
Food was DISGUSTING!!! Stop boosting a truly horribly tasting Chinese Food Restaurant that should not even be in business!!! Im sure your ancestors are turning in their grave!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!
The food is delicious and worth the wait when theyre busy.
Fast fresh. Good old fashioned Chinese food.
Great Fried Rice
The star is in the fakeness of the owner but the food is 5 star. The owner is not real for real. Yoi know what I mean?
Good food at reasonable prices. Old school Chinese- Canadian hits the spot.
Love China island ! Always great service & great food , highly recommend :)
We are house-sitting for the month and decided to give this place a try. An excellent experience, in particular I want to highlight the Ginger Beef which was so perfectly crispy and I loved how they separated the sauce from the beef for takeout. I cant overstate how much we appreciated that choice!
Psa they open 3 to 10.their hours arent updated and avoid the broccoli nd beef dish unless you really like broccoli and minimal beef
What a total waste of my money! Everything tasted like burnt oil, EVERYTHING! never ever eating here again. We threw everything in the garbage what a rip off dont believe the reviews people.
Worst lemon chicken ever, burnt chicken balls and prices on menu do not match in store prices, terrible experience
Solid always average Canadian Chinese food. If you like the buffet at Mandarin this is the same style. Its always a solid average. Nothing has blown me away but its always been good canadian chinese style. 3 stars but 1 extra for the owners who are always very nice. Open for takeout. If you like it spicy ask and they will spice it up for you.
Love China Island. The food is delicious, and the owners are so nice! The restaurant itself is definitely no frills, but it doesnt bother me because the food is awesome.
Been ordering from here for years- they have very good Chinese food. Always fresh and hot for take-out, and everything tastes very clean - way less greasy and very good meats. Highly recommend to anyone in the area!
That old school Chinese takeout vibe and food to match! China Island has a broad menu, with loads of options. Getting takeout from them has been great, and weve enjoyed everything weve had from there and definitely have our favourites. The owners are very nice and friendly too!
Good quality food for parties.
Amazing place! The food is consistently hot and high quality. Veggies are always fresh, and portions are big! The couple who runs it make the experience pleasant. No need to go downtown to get Chinese food when you have China Island in the neighbourhood. Mushroom fried rice, spring rolls and tofu+veggies are must orders!
Awesome couple running the restaurant. Good food.
Really like a group dinner from China Island. Been going there since the 80s and Ive never been disappointed.
As inauthentic a Chinese restaurant as you will ever find. Pretty sure they just pretended pork was beef.
Ordered take out dinner for 2. Beef with vegetables and Kung Pao chicken. The meat was almost non existent compared to the amount of vegetables. Seeing all the good reviews, maybe this was just a bad night
This place has been here for at least 30 years, and its because their food is legit delicious and on-point. Their physical restaurant even has an old-timey vibe! If youre looking to get some of the best, old-fashioned North-American style Chinese food, this is your go-to in this area. My favs are their Pork fried rice, Chicken balls and Wonton soup!
Went in to grab some general Tao chicken and came out with a sweet and sour chicken. The general Tao they serve is not spicy at all and came with pineapples which I ve never seen. Food was good but not getting general Tao again as was the fast threat thing from it.
Amazing food
Best wonton soup or vegetarian hot and sour soup in the city. The reason it only gets 3 stars is due to the consistently rude owner and extremely poor customer service she delivers. I used to be a regular but as she refuses to pay for a delivery service I can only bare to be be in her company as little as possible and so don t frequent the place to often. Very sad cuz the food is awesome
I just called to order takeout, and asked about the menu since they don t have a website. But the lady hung up on me, and refused to answer my calls anymore!
Loved it.. fresh crunchy spicy goodness
I ordered from China Island for the first time this week and will again! The owners-cooks are friendly and know how to make tasty food!
I love China Island. It is some of the most delicious Chinese food Ive found in Toronto. I was so happy to find a hole in the wall restaurant of this quality. The family that owns it are charming and always friendly. Highly recommend.
Love there sweet and sour pork. Looking forward for more great meal. Highly recommended.
Very good food
My parents took me here as a kid and Im a customer for life. Amazing food always super fresh and very nice people who own it!
Only eat here if you want to taste the most DELICIOUS Chinese food!!! Ive been eating their food for over a decade now and nothing else compares. The owner and staff are always super nice and friendly. The wonton soup, chicken balls, spring rolls, lo mein, general tao, and basically everything else is to die for. Its a great hole in the wall restaurant but I cant recommend it enough.
This has been a staple spot for my partner and I ever since we moved into the neighbourhood. There is no better lo mein and fried rice! Thank you for your great service and good prices.
The food is delicious
Went here for the first time. I went to pick it up and my wife was watching Downton Abbey (she loves that show) when I got home so we finished watching the episode. the servants were getting a party from the rich people. There was an affair too and everyone was all flustered. probably not going to watch that show again, not my thing.
Ive never been yelled at or talked so rudely to by someone in my life. The lady that runs this place has a serious problem. Food may be good but i would never give them a dollar after being spoken to the way i was when i arrived there.
Stood at their counter for 30 minutes right now, was not even acknowledged. One person in front of me has his order taken and filled, and then they proceed to ignore me and all the customers behind me for HALF AN HOUR. I am literally typing this on the sidewalk outside after walking out. 2 people on staff just cooking and ignoring customers. No, please wait a moment or anything. Just completely ignore you.
Food is very good
Great Food! Loved Chinese broccoli with beef and steamed rice.
The place is very clean, food is delicious and tastes like homemade.
Basic food prepared by wonderful people
Cost effective and decent quality
Went here twice since I was craving for some chinese food. The first time I went here I ordered Yang Chow Fried Rice and General Tsos Chicken. Made a mistake of not asking to put the sauce on the side which left me with soggy breaded meat. The fried rice was okay but could use a little less oil. The second time I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork this time sauce on the side. I got home all excited but when I opened package it was deep fried flour with half an inch cubed pork inside and the sauce is no different than General Tsos from taste to texture and color.
Good food and better price. Very happy with there service.
Ok Chinese food
Amazing food, always friendly staff! Might look bad from outside, but its a hidden gem
Very good
Friendly, relaxed atmosphere and great food for cheap. Fast service too. Will definitely be coming back.
Clean and kind
Nice food! Great prices. Ill come back.
This is a hidden gem. The people who run this restaurant are so kind and welcoming. The food is absolutely beautiful and very generous portions. Not to mention how reasonably priced it is also. Ill be back
Lo Mein had very little flavour. Was expecting garlic or chilli or anything remotely Szechuan . Water chestnut was the most forward (only) flavour Nice people though. Maybe I will buy them a spice rack for Christmas
Had a bad experience. Ruined my Chinese food experience. Served rice cold and old chicken. Service is so rude and not responsive.
Bad
Was trying to order takeout -- super rude and cut my line
Service was good. Food was not exceptional. But good enough. I may visit again. I had the Yung Chong Fried rice that was a bit dry. Chicken wings were a bit oily, but the mixed vegetables were great ... I may visit again and give it a second shot.
Small local place, very hole in the wall vibe. Good portion, most of what Ive had had been good, some has just been okay. Black bean was one that was just okay.
Had the Cantonese style noodles and beef. This place is amazing, had been here for over 10 plus years. They serve late and walk ins fairly quick.
They have pretty large portions which is great for your money. Very delicious. Had the Cantonese chow mein, general tao chicken and bbq pork fried rice. Would buy again.
Good food cheap eats
Lady was so nice to us and meals come in huge portions! Ask not to use MSG for your health
Great food! Been going here for about 17 years. We drive down from Maple just for the awesome hot and sour soup. The owner is also very pleasant!
Alright food for a decent price
Great food, long wait
good food .. I like it.. i will come back
Best Chinese restaurant in Toronto.
The food is fantastic. What more do you need?
I have been going there for years ,iam a very picky eater it is the best food in toronto, you must try the hot and sour soup it is amazing , everything i have tried there is so good
Cant say much about the place. I was in the area and went there, scared off by the look of the place
I mean, for Chinese food its good and cheap.
A neighbourhood gem. Chinese food made from fresh ingredients. Great prices, A friendly place. I noticed a few negative reviews about the service. If the place is busy, take your time. This is not a fast food restaurant. It is worth the wait.
The best!
Great food! Nice people! Casual environment! A neighborhood treasure!
Right on the bloor
Huge portions for very reasonable prices. Some dishes are delicious, some are ok. You have to know what you order.
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. The restaurant itself is smell and hasnt had a decore update for 30 years, but its quaint and a testimony to how good their food is but theyve lasted this long. Personally, I like highly recommend the chicken wings - they are so much more flavorful than any other Chinese chicken wings Ive had before. Also, the wonton soup is out of this world. The wontons I have a large portion of deliciously flavored pork insides, almost like a small meatball, and they add fresh napa cabbage leaves each time you order. The owners are amazing people and always take care to make delicious food and the kitchen is in full view of the dining area. You can actually see the fresh ingredients being put into your order. If you havent check this place out before, I really think that he would enjoy it. It has delivery now, which makes it even easier to give it a shot. Again, get the chicken wings.
amazing dishes
They have the most incredible wonton soup. Big pork meatballs in the wontons and fresh shredded cabbage. Youll have to try it.
One if my fav places in our hood!!!
Our fav Chinese food. No delivery, but totally worth struggling past the Dundas and Bloor intersection to get to.
Great place
Most favourite in the neighbourhood
Great Chinese food!
I had the Lemon chicken lunch special with rice and soup . The rice tasted burnt and the Lemon chicken was overdone. The service was poor from the owners. Large portions of food
Hidden gem near Dundas West station. A must try if your in the area
This mom and pop restaurant is a little gem. If your craving great Chinese food, and your near Dundas West Station make it a point to try this hidden gem
Have eaten here twice and was thoroughly disappointed both the times. Thought I d give some benefit of the doubt and try the place again , however the food was of very low quality ! The general Taos chicken was quite literally fried pieces of chicken in heaps of corn flour and added to some pre made canned sauce. I am not a fussy person, but having given the place two chances I am quite certain I would never eat there again or even recommend this place. I m quite surprised with the reviews here. May be I ordered wrong both the times. However theres a difference between bad tasking food and low quality of food!
$10 includes tax tips. Cheap Fast tasty
Best Chinese food in the area.
Love the chicken wings!
Got beef and broccoli. 6 pieces of thin beef, not coming back.
Nice place.very friendly helpful accommodating. Asked for no pork. Excellant. Lunch special.
Food is always fresh and tasty. Staff are pleasant and down to earth.
Hot and sour soup is awesome!
Best Canadian Chinese in West end by far!
Best lunch deal in all of Toronto!
Good food and service
Great food, great portions, pretty quick.
This place does not look the nicest. I order my food and was very impressed. If you want good food and are willing to overlook the plain looking tables, this spot is great.
My favorite neighborhood restaurant. Delicious food, plenty and at affordable prices. Not a fancy nor trendy restaurant, just a place to get plain good food.
The best Chinese food I had ever. I always make sure to eat here when I visit!
Would not recommend, even if youre in the mood for mall-quality Chinese food.
yes this place is outdated looking but the food has always been delicious. Service is ok, just a typical Chinese restaurant service, not good but not bad. Since the food has always been very good, they have earned the full five stars from me. I would have given them more stars if I had more :)
Awesome food, friendly staff, quick service. Great for dine in or take out.
Our favourite homestyle chinese food restaurant in our hood! The owners are amazing!
Great food, super value and nice people
Had high hopes after I checked the reviews. But wife and I agreed, our first trip would also be our last. Food was crap.
Some of the best Chinese food Ive ever had. Their sweet and sour sauce and honey garlic sauce is delicious. Everything is made fresh right before your eyes. I have had the breaded shrimps, chicken balls, wonton soup, chicken with mixed vegetables, and lo mein. You can customize your order. Like ordering the chicken lo mein with mixed vegetables which is not on the menu. Good prices and good quantity for the price. I will be a regular for a long time.
Very horrible service, no caring, no nothing. And took forever to make in an empty placem Washroom is untidy
Fresh, simple, delicious, and generous; pretty much everything you want and need in your staple takeout restaurant.
Lady owner has no manners. Just rude. Like a robot. Smile at least especially to your regular customers
the food was great
A few things. A mixed experience First off Horrible hours Who opens at noon for lunch ?!?!? Secondly not the cleanest place as saw someone bring back a takeout dish that had OBVIOUS MOLD IN THE SAUCE and the owners response was that you should be happy that she threw it out as opposed to serving it as many Chinese food places would. Her words not mine. Also try not to order off the menu or youll be ASKED TO LEAVE. not kidding as seen it happen more than once. The food is good though.
Ordered three dishes for delivery . It was all disappointing. End up eating something else.
Parents have been going here for 20 years and Ive been coming for a while too. Never fail to feed me my favorite food!!!
The Wok Hei effect is strong in this place. Crispy and bursting with flavour. The sweet and sour pork is unlike any other Ive ever tried. Sweet, tangy and all crunch. Think pork crisps. Completely different but I really liked it. The service was friendly and efficient. The entire look of the place suggests otherwise, but the food was incredible.
Everything is great food, dining and service very clean
China Island has the best Chinese food in the west end of Toronto. Thus family wined business puts love and care into all of their dishes. They will customize any order as EVERY THING is freshly made. Portions are huge and quality ingredients are used. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. Their wonton soup is delicious and makes you feel cozy on a cold day.The prices are great I have never tried anything I didnt love. I have a friend who lives in Kingston and takes this food home every time she visits Toronto. Try China Island if your looking for great quality, freshly made food, huge portions and friendly service.
Weve been eating here for about 20 years. Awesome food, wonderful people!
Really bad experience. The food taste was awful. Too much fat, even for american chinese foods stands.
Good food good people running the pkace
good. homey. simple. very clean with open kitchen.
Great food, food prices. They even accommodated an of the menu request for some traditional dishes that we. Very friendly pickup service.
This is our favourite Chinese restaurant in Toronto. The food is consistently good. It takes no time for them to prepare orders. And the pricing is fantastic! By choosing China Island, youre also supporting a small family business!
The food was ok, but customer service is quite back. Im a frequent customer and I place many phone orders. The lady (who i think is the owner) always seems to rushed. Though she knows I order quite a bit from her, she has snapped at me a few times. She usually says I can pick up the food in 10-15 minutes. The last time she told me that it would take at least 30 minutes. I pondered over that for a second. And she happily recommended that I should cancel my order. I was not happy with that. So much for the loyal customers!
Its nice that their kitchen is out in the open and you can see everything being cooked. The food is a little expensive but is usually fresh and tastes really good. My favorite things to get are their Chicken and Broccoli or Pork with Mixed Vegetables & Cashew Nuts in a Hot Sauce.
