Over the past 30 years, I’ve seen many restaurants come and go in Chinatown, but thankfully, spots like House of Gourmet, Rol San, and Swatow have stood the test of time. House of Gourmet (HOG) continues to deliver quick, no-fuss service and a menu packed with casual Cantonese dishes at very affordable prices. On my recent visit, I opted for the lunch special: a plate of BBQ pork and roasted pork served over steamed rice with seasonal greens, plus a Hong Kong-style tea or coffee—all for just $12.99. It was exactly what I needed, with perfectly portioned servings. The BBQ pork was tender with those delicious charred ends, and the roasted pork was meaty, crispy, and thankfully not too fatty. We also shared a larger portion of hot & sour soup so we could take some home. It was tangy, spicy, and numbing in just the right way, with plenty of shrimp and pork. While it wasn’t the most memorable hot & sour soup I’ve had, it was satisfying. Next time, I’m planning to try the specials available from 3–5:30 PM, as the menu includes several dishes I enjoy. The servers here are incredibly efficient—a hallmark of classic Chinese restaurants and a quality I’ll always appreciate in a world where that style of service is becoming increasingly rare.

We got there really late, but the place was super clean and had tons of space, not cramped or smelly. We ordered fried noodles with veggies and seafood (honestly, the best), rib steak with black bean sauce (delicious), and pork belly with pressed veggies (really tender, but just okay). Portions were huge, so you’re definitely not leaving hungry. A must-try spot for late-night Chinese food in Chinatown.

One of most delicious restaurant I have been in Toronto. It was a large group of us and my friend knows what to order. They have delicious meet noodle and egg plant stew. Staff were super friendly. restaurant atmosphere were abit old and super Chinesey. Overall was a good choice for late night dinner with your buzzed friends.

House of Gourmet is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Toronto's Chinatown. I have visited this place several times, and each time I enjoyed their food immensely. They offer a variety of menus featuring seafood, beef, pork, chicken, and vegetables, along with rice, noodles, rice soup, and more. My personal favorites are their beef, chicken, and seafood dishes served with rice or noodles. During my last visit, I tried the Deep-Fried Breaded Fish Fillet with Sweet and Sour Sauce along with chicken noodles. It was delicious and perfect for a seafood lover like me. The portion sizes are generous, and while the appetizers are slightly expensive, they are worth every penny. House of Gourmet is a great spot to dine with family and friends, and it's also suitable for a date. The restaurant is usually crowded, but you can expect to receive your meals within a good 10-15 minutes. The staff is friendly and very quick, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. I will definitely return to try another meal.

(also posted on Yelp) Located in Chinatown, House of Gourmet is probably a staple here. They serve Cantonese-style dishes. I was surprised to see they close at 1 AM. Some reviewers said the servers spoke Cantonese, but actually the 3-4 people I talked to all spoke Mandarin. Food was pretty average. Nothing stood out to me. However, it was also very very difficult to decide what to order. They must have a million things on their menu. I took almost twenty pictures of their menu alone. I only have four pictures of the actual food I ordered. It was too much food, so I did bring home leftovers. I agree with the average sentiments of previous reviewers - they have mediocre food but large portions with good prices. You may have to add your own salt or soy sauce. Definitely get the BBQ pork or roasted duck. I really enjoyed those. Credit card accepted.

“Great spot for late night eats” It may take me my entire life to try everything on this menu and I bet I would be done only half way!! They have two menus with insane options, and possibly more if you look around. It’s almost like an art gallery with chef specials posted all over the place! While the food can be hit or miss at times, the Deep Fry Chicken with Hot Pepper is a must-try. Personally, I'm a fan of their Veg Fried Rice, especially the burst of wok hei from the dish, that stuff really sending me! Overall, portions are generous and prices are reasonable. Don't hesitate to try!

If you're looking for old school Chinatown, this is a great place to try. Definitely is not the most modern interior, but the food is very simple and the value is great. We ordered a couple of their Sunday specials (B and C) - great options available for $12.99, and comes with a drink and soup. They were nice enough to give us a big bowl of soup at the start of the meal instead of small individual bowls. The only thing I didn't like was that the rice dish was mostly rice, but the BBQ meats were still good. Service is what you would expect at a restaurant like this. Quick and efficient.

Atmosphere is not cosy, but the best Cantonese/Hong Kong Chinese food Ive had in my 20 years in Toronto. The fried rice and hot-and-sour soups are my benchmark, and those are top notch. They do Peking Duck, too! Its just three duck courses plus extra, non-duck dishes, but its good.

I ve been a loyal customer at House of Gourmet for almost 20 years. The last there are week tha Tim there lunch and dinner as their food always consistency and yummy but the last couple of months the food it s not the same as it used to be. Especially the house fried rice, it s doesn t have that wok hei it s more like fried rice from the mall food court which they cook eveything in a pot. Fried pork chop with salt and pepper - now it s coated in batter Deep fried squid- used to so tender and melted in your mouth, now it s hard and chewy like eating rubber band Deep Fried Stuffed Bean Curd Mixed Sausage & Meat - basically it s glutinous ball with soft tofu and chopped up Chinese sausage and fried up with sauce Perhaps they have changed the chef, Anna should look into it as it was one of the best place to eat in china town

December 1, 2024

The servers were very rude, they push customer in the walkway and almost burned our hand when bringing the dishes. We waited 20 minutes to get the bill and servers just ignored us, they also strongly pushed for tipping when we payed. The food tasted very uncooked and meat quality was bad, we feel sick after.

One of the best spots in Toronto for Cantonese food! Our server, Cindy was attentive and welcoming. She helped us with substitutions for our meal and made our dining experience enjoyable. The Fish Maw and Crab Soup was a great starter. The Sweet and Sour Pork Chops were juicy and tender. The Yin Yang Fried Rice is best for those who love creamy sauces. Lobster was fried perfectly, allowing us to easily remove the meat. Looking forward to the next meal here!

Lots of popular traditional Chinese comfortable food options, like rice rolls, congee, noodles soups. Tasty but we found everything not quite hot enough (temperature wise), including the tea. The dinner bowls that the server put down for us were so cold. Rice rolls were just warm, very low on soy sauce. We ordered veg with oyster sauce, it was comical how few drops of oyster sauce they put on. If only the food was served HOT enough. I think all our food came from the kitchen by the restaurants Front door made a difference.

Delicious shrimp wonton noodle soup! The broth was light yet flavourful. We ordered some garlic baby bok choy and shrimp rice rolls as well to share. The rice rolls were okay, not as soft and fresh like we re used to. Can t blame them though they re not a dim sum house. But the other dishes were yummy. They also serve some chilli crisps but you have to request for it because it s not available at the tables. It s probably one of the best chilli crisps I ve had. Quite a flavour bomb, spicy and they re available for purchase as well. We regret not grabbing a jar of it when we were there. Welp, time to plan for another visit!

Dietary restrictions: If people have any restrictions need to inform the waiter. Kid-friendliness: This place is Kid friendly because families with kids can come here.

I paid the part in debit but didn t tip, the waitress asked why I didn t tip ?!? I said I would tip in cash. I paid the rest of my bill I m cash and left a $5 tip. One the service was not good Two it was slow and we weren t tented to unless I made the first move. And three I don t tip naturally. So when the tip the lady put her hand over the bill tray and asked for more money??? She said more more 10% tip more money now I said no that s it only $5. I know tipping it supposed to be common when going out to eat but if the service is not good then you won t get a tip and you sure won t get anything else with that attitude!! This is a late night Chinese food restaurant. Food came to the table pretty fast and was delicious (flavours and sauces). There were 2 menus so a lot of options and variety. We ordered double lobster, shrimp with thousand island sauce, congee, and cantonese chow mein. We came in around 10:30pm, it was pretty busy, but we were lucky and got seated right away.

In business, customer service is crucial; treating each person well is essential, as poor treatment can drive customers away. As for the food, it didn t leave a strong impression. There are many Chinese restaurants with outstanding customer service and better-tasting food. not recommended.......

Ordered Baby BBQ pork. Supposed to be something special as its $19.99/plate for about 7 or 8 pieces. It came cold, even the fat is solid. Spoke with the waiter who dressed differently that looks like the owner. She didnt care much, and said its cold like that or its not crispy. I just never had such cold BBQ pork in a restaurant where the fat is solid. Also, its not the regular BBQ pork, its baby BBQ pork, supposed to be premium. I left the entire plate there untouched except the first bite but pay for it anyway to really tell them the food is really bad. Upsad no action was taken to show some care by the seem to be Manager or owner. I also ordered their Chicken Fried Rice and Soup, appears to be good. Just the baby BBQ pork which pissed me quite a bit. A restaurant at this standard shouldnt be this way. Hope the owner takes this comment and improve.

This is the most horrible Chinese restaurant I have ever visited, even counting China mainland. Service is nasty, the food was hard to identify, the waitresses were yelling throughout the restaurant, walking around with a supermarket cart with dangling dishes. It was so noisy just from the staff. So many customers, and the only noise you heard was dishes and women yelling. The tea was yellow, I bet there was not a shred of red tea inside. When I asked for a napkin, after 3 times I got up from my chair, the waitress was waving at me with the napkins yelling at me take it. Skip this one.

Who would want to eat in a restaurant with a rude staff??? Food took so long to arrive too.

We ordered Fried mixed vegetables noodles. The portions were huge. It could easily be shared among 2 persons. I asked them to replace the fried noodles with rice noodles. I found the dish to be bit bland. Though it was good after mixing soy sauce. The iced milk tea was great. The restaurant is quite spacious from inside. They accept all forms of payment. The service is excellent. Their menu is very extensive. Ambience is also great. I ve heard a lot about this restaurant but found it bit overhyped. Vegetarian options: Fried mixed vegetables noodles

I used to love this restaurant and their roasted duck legs were good. But I ordered a dish of roasted pork with rice today and the quality was not very good. I paid 15 CAD and the meat was dry and not very appetizing and I left half of the pork untouched. I hope they will do better next time.

June 22, 2024

We shared five dishes and I could not recommend a single one. Every one was extremely BLAND. It was a bummer the portions were so huge because we could barely eat any of it - we gave our leftovers to a homeless man on Spadina. 1. The steamed broccoli with oyster sauce was disappointing with zero flavour. 2. Wonton soup was more like wontons in plain water cause I think they forgot the broth 3. The sweet & sour pork was the most edible part and even that was 4/10 4. Braised duck with mixed veg. Where was the duck? Completely drowned in freezer veggies and the small amount of duck was mostly skin. Again super bland. 5. House special fried noodles. This was gross. Some of the noodles were not cooked at all. It was like eating raw Mr Noodles. I could not understand how this place was as busy as it was. This might be the worst meal out I ve had in Toronto.

DO NOT COME HERE. I don t know how this place has a 4 star rating. I swear everyone in this restaurant is a paid actor. My fiancé and I thought we would try something new and opted for House of Gourmet. We ordered the Wonton Soup, Chinese Broccoli, House Special Fried Noodles, Braised Duck with Mixed Vegetables and Sweet and Sour Pork. The only thing that was half edible was the Sweet and Sour Pork (which was still underwhelming and I d give it a 4/10). The Chinese Broccoli was served to us first and it was all downhill from there. It was disgustingly wet, basically floating in liquid and tasted like stale water. Next we had the Wonton Soup which had absolutely no flavour, the broth was soooo watered down and the noodles and pork were flavourless! I wish we took pictures of the braised duck . There was quite literally 0 duck served on our plate. The entire plate was a bag of frozen vegetables absolutely drowning sauce. It was essentially frozen vegetable soup with no duck! This restaurant is absolutely scamming people, charging almost $30 for a dish that is comprised of only frozen bagged veg. Our noodles were also undercooked and rock hard, and again drowning in flavourless sauce with frozen veg, 100% suspect looking seafood and undercooked pork. I would absolutely NOT recommend coming here. This restaurant has to be in the top 5 worst meals I ve ever had. Everything we ordered was a complete miss. Nothing was fresh, dishes were either grossly watered down or drowning in flavourless sauce.

This is my go-to when ordering Chinese. Consistently good every time. Portions are generous and come well packed. Food is always fresh, clean (not too greasy or salty) and delicious. Our favourites to order is the Deep-Fried Japanese Bean Curd with Pepper Salt, Beef with Vegetable Fried Noodle (I always order two as my kids devour it), and Spicy Deep-Fried Pork Chop with Salt and Pepper. Recently went to visit as a group of 8 and had the Peking Duck dinner, which lets you pick additional dishes to round it out, very reasonable. Food was excellent, where can you go for a big dinner for $200? (We didn t drink). The duck was well presented, crispy slices of skin, plus meat and skin together. Pancakes are nice and thin, but you ll need to order more. Wish they would include extra in their original order. I don t have photos of the Peking Duck dinner, but next time I go I will update, because I know I ll be back! They do take reservations, pay by cash or debit.

If youre looking for truly authentic Cantonese Chinese food and experience, this is the place to go. This is the best restaurant in Chinatown and I cannot believe I didnt discover this place earlier. The food is absolutely BOMB and the WOK HEI is FIRE. We ordered a bunch of dishes and each dish made my taste buds very happy. This restaurant reminds me of Hong Kong where when it gets super busy, they ask customers if they want to share a table with another group. I get it can be an uncomfortable practice and that is how it is in Hong Kong - there is absolutely no pressure to share a table with another group. Its loud, its busy and its the authentic vibe. Dont be afraid of coming here. Youll be blown away by their mouthwatering dishes. I cannot wait to eat here again.

It was summer 1997 when I first dined in, and instantly became their regular Due to there are so many other Asian restaurant selection in this city, I have not been able to dine in since last Christmas. Tonight I ordered my favorite dishes - soy chicken (world class yummy), beef stir fried broccoli with satay sauce, garlic Chinese broccoli, ma-po tofu, XO sauce garoupa, egg white fried rice with dried scallops, e-fu noodles with crab meat. Service was friendly (unlike most Cantonese places in Chinatown that waiters were often being rude without apologizing), they are well trained and fast If you ask me what s the downside, I will have to say parking and the restaurant s ambiance. Pay parking on the streets in the neighborhood or an old low ceiling garage across the street. The restaurant decor (if there s any) is what I would suggest you to forget it, never mind just focus on the food.

The waiter deliberately lied to me. I wanted noodle soup with stewed beef. I forgot to tell him I wanted vermicelli instead of the regular noodles. When I asked to change from regular noodles to vermicelli, he rudely yelled that they were out of vermicelli. His tone was unacceptable. He did not even check with the kitchen. He could have just said that the order had gone through and I would have been okay. I knew he lied as someone else at the next table got vermicelli soon after my order came. Also, since I had dined many times there before, and knew the routine, I could tell he lied. Therefore while food was okay, service was terrible. I am not sure if I will return to the restaurant as it has gone downhill in recent months.

April 22, 2024

I went to buy takeout. The cashiers had such a bad attitude that they were like begging. Their food was totally substandard and the food was not necessarily good or very ordinary. Dont buy food here again. We are customers. We are here to buy things, not to see you. Please think about your complexion. What is your identity? How dare you show such shameless people that the management is also turning a blind eye and is really a failure

April 22, 2024

I have always been a regular customer of this restaurant. I have always thought that the service and food in this restaurant are good. However, in recent years, every time I go to buy takeout, whether it is two portions, three portions or countless portions, when I ask for two more boxes of chili oil, The little cashier (lady) always made a lot of noise when she arrived. She also said: This is what the boss told me. No matter how many takeaways you buy, the maximum is only 2 small boxes of chili oil. You are not allowed to take more? And most importantly, the female cashier actually asked me, why do I have to eat it so spicy? If you want spicy food, just buy a box of chili oil for 5 yuan! Never heard of such a service? When customers buy 5 takeaways, they can only take out one box of chili oil! If you ask for more, it will cause quarrels! Its really scary. I originally wanted to happily buy takeout and enjoy it at home, but now it makes me feel depressed! I believe I will never go to this restaurant again! Save yourself the trouble!

Thank you to Derrick for the good service. The cashier lady on the other hand, threw both my receipt and condiments container in my face (their attitude was horrid). I really wouldnt want to return here. Last night I ordered five portions of stir-fried dishes at Man Ting Fang. I separated two bags when I wanted to. When I got the Tie Tiao, the cashier had a very bad attitude. When he threw the receipt at me, he said something that made me very annoyed and angry. Take it back to file tax return. Is this what you said to the customers? I bought five takeaways. I asked if I could give you a few boxes of chili oil. Can the pretty girl give it to you? She only threw a small box on the cashier table. What my friend said If five portions are not enough, we can add more. She didn t reply. I said excuse me again. Do you understand Chinese? We need more because five portions of stir-fries and one are not enough. She said that no matter how many takeaways the boss lady ordered, the maximum number was two. I asked her to ask the proprietress to talk to her face to face. She threw out a cup of chili oil. You don t want such an attitude in the catering industry. I hope the boss and the proprietress know the cause of this matter. As a customer, I come here often to eat and give it to everyone every time. A $5 tip per person and a big tip on top of the bill. If Tiao Ba Po (short and thin) continues to have this attitude in service, please go home and don t cause all the good employees in Man Ting Fang to lose their jobs. Also, she placed the wrong order. I ll order, Stir-fried beef with broccoli and beef, she gave me beef with broccoli. I was so angry, if anyone can tolerate such a service attitude, will you suffer the loss of dignity one more time? This cashier needs to learn more about respecting others and being polite.

From its bustling round tables to the ducks hanging in the window, House of Gourmet is the best restaurant in Chinatown without a doubt. The food is tasty, prices reasonable, and service fast. They have an endless supply of dishes, but I personally recommend the Singapore Noodles and Black Pepper Spaghetti (it may sound weird to order spaghetti at a Chinese restaurant but trust me). Tea is included in the meal, and is of an incredibly soothing variety, but they also have numerous other drinks, most importantly Ovaltine. If youre seeking a classic spot for Chinese, look no further.

I miss the authentic style of egg noodles soup in Hongkong and this place did not disappoint. We ordered the shrimp wonton egg noodles soup and deep fried shrimp wonton rolls. The noodle soup was very filling and can feed 2 people priced at 10.99 CAD. the wonton itself was very satisfying. shrimp inside was compact and flavorful. So is the shrimp roll. The roll is overpriced at 2.75 each. It could have been bigger. I wished they had chili oil to be partnered with everything. Service is so-so. They just forgot to serve the rolls to us but the noodle soup came in quick. Vegetarian options: there are a number of veggie options.
