1116 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1H9, Canada
A non-nonsense local diner, featuring traditional Canadian breakfasts, as well as an array of Chinese dishes.
They forgot to include part of my order and I didn’t notice until I was home, so everything was cold. The most dry, tasteless general tao chicken I’ve ever had.
The place is not busy which initially turned me away but I found the courage to try and was very happy that I did. Second time eating here, the food is good. the prices are fair in my opinion. It's nice to have a good Chinese restaurant nearby.
Omg. Overcooked, Chicken Balls, dry, overcooked egg rolls, hard as a rock. Containers not full.Food was not hot. 2hours to deliver. At $83.00. Plus $3.00 delivery charge. I had company, I was embarrassed. Worse order I've ever had. They are located 5 blocks away, and it takes them 2 hrs.to dliver!!
Classic, well made diner breakfast, classic prices, love the mom and pop vibe. In 2023 Toronto where everything is overpriced and overhyped, it is nice to be able to go out for a decent breakfast without breaking the bank.
So far, this is the best place for a weekend brunch. Why spend so much money on fancy restaurants when it's so chill and comfortable here? The staff is incredibly nice and always smiling.
What a delightful little diner! Strong mom and pop vibe. I was skeptical about ordering but my friends had eaten here before and said the food is good. The adventure down to the bathroom was a bit on the creepy side but the food was wonderful and reaaonably priced. My stomach was upset so I ended up boxing up my breakfast, so I hope if the owners read this they know it's not because it wasn't good. I would eat here again.
This Chinese/Canadian-fare diner is nestled in on Queen St west amongst a nice walking area filled with shops, butcher, baker and more. We ate from the Chinese menu- dinners for 1 plus some wontons and soup. The wonton soup was good, fried wontons were not bad but I prefer a less hard and crunchy wrap. Unfortunately, using the deep fryer meant the smell of fried food permeated the restaurant, and wasn’t terribly pleasant.
This is what I got for $6.50: 4 eggs scrambled, home fries, 3 sausages, 4 pieces of toast your choice and a coffe/tea. Like, how do you even beat that. Sure, it wasn’t fancy or any quality food, but it’s not bad. Came back for a second time as well, got the same thing, didn’t let me down. If you’re looking for some cheap brunch, like cheap like no other places, this is your spot!
Great chicken fried rice!
Orange chicken is bad. It seems like they fried some nuggets and then threw some orange juice on it. Tasteless, Bitter, soggy Food : 1/5
Best Breakfast in Toronto!
Hidden gem!
Ive eaten here a few times and each time I leave thinking why dont I come here more often?!
Proper classic diner atmosphere and you can get a large, delicious meal and a beer for under $20! In 2024! This place is a treasure.
Don t let the looks scare you. The food was fantastic.
Love this lil greasy-spoon diner. Its a perfect spot for a basic breakfast/brunch
Foods so good - I really dont care about the cockroaches everywhere, i go back.. lol! Place is infested with them, but hey - so is Toronto right?? I go every Saturday morning (id be upset if i didnt see a cockroach) it would almost take away from the vibe.
Never disappoints! One of my favourite spots on Queen West!
If you want a cheap but delicious breakfast, come here. It feels like like an old family diner. Family owned, very friendly and yummy food that is super affordable. Breakfast for two with coffe and orange juices was $20!
Tried their sweet and sour pork today, it is really good !
Small and unassuming. No fancy decorations or showmanship, the food SPEAKS for itself. This keeps the price good and the quality great. I had a big lunch with a side order and a pop and it came to under $20. Thats incredible for 2024.
Great owners. Food is amazing. Value is spectacular. Support good local small businesess
Banquet Burger
Want great food, at a great place, served to you by genuinely kind people? This is the place. Don t get confused - this isn t your typical Queen Street fancy or glamorous 5 star restaurant, with a 5 star atmosphere. It is in fact a no-nonsense local eatery, ran by a couple will openly admit that they haven t renovated since they opened the place in 1999. They re very humble, and they make excellent food for the price. I dunno what the guy who reviewed before me is on about, but the man and his wife who own this place work crazy hard to try and make a living, and are both great chefs for the prices they charge. I can t think of many places in the city that offer a $9 combo dinner, a $5 wonton soup or a $10 big breakfast anymore, but those dishes and everything else on the menu is seriously GOOD for what you re paying. My girlfriend and I come here often, and we re always treated well. I d understand leaving a bad review if you were paying $30 for eggs and bacon, but at these prices and with such kind people who clearly run this as a family business, if they re even above average and good quality (as they are) then there s no reason why anyone should be riled up about it. I always recommend this place to my friends, and I always will. Definitely worth the price of admission, and a hidden gem in the crazy expensive area that is Queen and Ossington. Don t ignore it just cause it isn t glammed up like its neighbours. This is the real thing, and the very definition of quality over quantity.
Very simple delicious dishes that wont break the bank. Not fancy and doesnt need to be.
Good food great prices.
Queen Star is one of the neighbourhoods hidden gems. Im there for breakfast every weekend I get a chance. Friendly, fast, confusingly inexpensive. I always leave full, happy, and caffeinated.
Good classic diner breakfast for a good price! Ill be back to try the rest of the menu soon.
Delicious food, classic style of small restaurant cafeteria of my homecountry, nothing pretentious with annoying locals xD
Good breakfast options, good value
I have friends that order from Queen star, so I thought I should check it out, I have ordered there for takeout 3 times now and got Chinese food items. was so delicious! And such a large variety of other kinds of food there that I will definitly try someday.
Nice food! Nice people! Best general Tao and chow mein in town!
Loveeeee it, gem spot underestimated
Been going here for over 15 years , nice family run business and very tasty food . My favorite is Philly steak sandwich .
Really great mom and pop diner - the owners clearly work hard to please their guests. They serve very solid traditional breakfast fare and the Cantonese dishes are authentic and flavourful. Everything is affordable and delicious. Also love the quaint and classic diner feel.
My first time trying this restaurant, ordered house fried rice without shrimp and beef with mushroom. The takeout was tasty, well balanced and happy with the food quality. Will order from here again.
i really love coming here! the food is very reasonably priced and delicious. i usually get honey garlic chicken with french toast, and that combination is so good!!! the owners are so lovely and sweet as well. im trying to get all my friends to come here because i genuinely love this place so much. show them support!!!!!
What a cute and kind place! The food was so tasty, reasonably priced and great portions :D Can tell how much the owners put work into it, will be back again for cheap tasty food~
Very good family business run all day breakfast and Chinese food. The first time here, I am amazed how their food is good with AMAZING prices. Very good service and clean. The potato was so delicious, too roasted with onion. Yummy. So I ordered the special with bacon as my friend did I normally not big fan of bacon I gave it to friend but was well done cooked and nice test I had one. The table beside us ordered Chinese food, and it looks amazing . Please give them a good tip as their prices are too low to compensate for it. Thank you for your wonderful service and food.
Really quaint diner, hole in the wall atmosphere. Had the 2-egg breakfast special, solid classic meal at a geat price.
Great food made by great chefs.
Amazing family run business! Great service and really delicious food. Definitely recommend. Thank you!
In 2023 expensive Toronto, this is 1 of the amazing places you can get a good breakfast for 7$ 3 eggs 3 bacon potatoes and bread Parking: Street parking
Pretty good breakfast for $7.95; i like their egg rolls and salad
Amazing family run place. Enjoyed the all day breakfast which was delicious and with an unbeatable value for only 7.95
Food is standard issue breakfast food, cooked well, fresh and solid portions. Come here for exceptional value for money...if you want a full brunch with avocado toast, etc this isnt the place for you. Old school basic food and the prices reflect that. Suggestion: because the prices are so low, dont tip based on percentage but instead leave a $$$ amount.
I love this place so much. Feels like a time capsule to when the neighbourhood was warehouses and lumber yards. Inexpensive and tasty.
Best diner around, love love love this place. The food is so yummy, owners are massive sweethearts. Definitely most frequented place in the neighborhood - amazing prices too.
Ive only been Once to have a meal. I eat from them often, Ive usually had Take-Out delivered. I Love the Fried Chicken Wings I recommend them, Definitely 1one of the Best Places in the City and the Best Prices too.
Not the best clean restaurant, good price, good food.
Friendly service , breakfast was very tasty and prices are very reasonable.
Place could use a redecoration but everything else from the food to to the price is immaculate. Dragon boater approved.
Really good healthy food. Don t be afraid for the look. I took fried rice (not so fried and not fat at all) with vegetables and eggs. Like Nasi Goreng in Bali. Totally recommended.
House special fried was yumm and good customer service.
Small place at Gerrard and Broadview but its unique BBQ combos makes it a place to go...and best of all...affordable prices...
Was wondering why it had a 4.3 star rating and I get it!!!! Super underrated, affordable prices and feels like when your family cooks you your favourite food.
Pretty good, cheap as heck
Don t let the exterior confuse you- this spot has AMAZING food, prices, and service. They have been open for 24 years and are a staple in the neighbourhood. Food
Excellent food and warm welcome!
I come here fairly often for the bacon and egg breakfast. Solid food and you can t beat the price.
This is a great gem! Been coming here for years. The atmosphere is like a real great family atmosphere... Real gem ! Breakfast is affordable And there chickens are amazing!
Keep your expectations low.
Its my hangover dining spot, feels like eating at and the staff its very friendly
Little place, nothing fancy, but the food and the service wax great.
Honestly idk what you are doing if you rate this less than 5 stars. A parkdale staple , an example of the simpler times and nostalgia that is long lost in our modern day. Breakfast for a steal , always good always consistent and always a pleasure. I hope we never lose this place
This place is a wonderful cozy spot that still has an old neighbourhood diner vibe. It serves really good breakfast for a great price and the owners are super kind!
Really hard to order over the phone for delivery
We ordered delivery and our food came promptly! It was delicious and I even had to call the resturant after to thank them!
Simple English breakfast, just what I wanted. You dont pay extra for fuss & decor. The mom & pop vibe is nice.
I really dont know how this place has such a high rating. Maybe it s the burgers and eggs, but I ve ordered a Chinese dish twice from this place and both times the food was meh. The first time the food arrived about an hour after my order, which is not unexpected. But tonight was my 2nd time ordering. i put in an order for a single meal, as i am a single person living alone. The lady on the phone told me i should order more food next time, it s too little food. I reminded her that i am paying for delivery, this isnt free. So she shut up. She seemed to take offence to this because after taking my order and telling me the total, she immediately hung up on me in the middle of asking her a question of when to expect the food. I called back immediately and she didnt answer my call. I had to call 2 more times for her to pick up and tell me it would be an hour. Yeah that was a lie. The food came 2hrs late. Yes, 2 hours. I called at 522pm and the delivery man called my buzzer at 721pm. And the food was room temp, not even warm. So i called just now to speak to a manager, just so the manager is aware what is going on in their store. the lady pretended she doesn t know when manager will be in and hung up on me. Twice. Also, she charged me $11.50 for my meal, which was Dinner for One No. 10. The menu uploaded by the owners on the FB page says it is $10.50. She even said $10.50 initially but then corrected herself and said $11.50. That menu on FB was uploaded in 2022, so it s possibly prices have gone up. But then why havent the owners uploaded the new menu prices? Makes me wonder if she purposely upcharged me because i ordered too little food . It s a shame that one of the few Chinese restaurants in Parkdale with delivery has such a high rating, yet this lady is ruining their star rating with this abysmal customer service and attitude that we should order more because it s not worth her driver delivering such little food. Reader, you have been warned.
Absolutely fantastic place! The food is always delicious with amazing prices. Staff is so friendly and accommodating. The vibe is very retro diner style which I love. Anytime someone visits me in Toronto it s a must go to place. Absolutely love it here
Very good breakfast. The bacon is amazing . 100% recommend!
cheeseburger and fries were just right, perfect
Bad customer service and food was not good. Also the food was very overpriced
Solid place, nice people. We had breakfast and chicken balls.
Gotta love supporting local restaurants!!! YES YES YES!!!
$3 delivery charge, then $2 credit card charge makes this kinda expensive n the food isnt that good - no amount for FREE delivery - sad - ill look for a different place for chinese food - if they are going to charge me $5 extra then the food should be very good
Lady serving was very nice, but place isnt the cleanest. Cans of soft drinks from fridge were filthy, chest freezer is filthy when opened.
Im usually not big on chinese food but this place actually blew my mind; loved everything we ordered for a quick and easy well priced dinner. The lady serving was super nice and sweet and the service itself was fast; Ill definitely go back to it.
Great diner breakfast spot.
I use to eat from Queen Star Restaurant frequently, the good ole university days, when classes ran late and you wanted something to fill your belly and was convenient. However, with the recent price increase, I can not justify frozen chicken bits, bagged veggies and pre-mixed white rice in soy sauce. Saigon Flower Restaurant down the street is much better!
I appreciate a diner such as this still standing strong in a place like West Queen West. The food is familiar, filling and cheap which makes it satisfying on a soul level. The family that runs this place makes it feel very homey like you were dropping into a home of your Chinese immigrant friend and their mom was obliged to offer you food.
Humble mom-and-pop joint surrounded by soulless fast food chains and franchises. The big portions and cheap price makes it a great place for take out. Call in to place your order so you dont have to wait too long. I recommend the vegetable lo mein.
Fantastic spot and really captures the essence of the Old School Queen West. You know, before it got all trendy? I came here when I first moved to the city in the fall of 2006(they were located down the street) and enjoy their breakfast special just as much today. A really great, mom-and-pop operation and an important part of the neighbourhood. The food is great and the owners are hard working, honest and fair. They have been serving our community for many years and Im so happy they still are.
We ordered Chinese food. Food was great and freshly made with large portions, however I suggest doing take out only
Great location, delicious food, great prices. Family business. If you live in the area, definitely go support their business. They are working hard to maintain good quality for a great price. Try their breakfast menu!
I dont think Im willing to find out if their Canadian food is better than their Chinese food.
Absolutely charming place. Cheap but good breakfast/brunch. Family owned and operated. I would recommend this place 100 times over
Cheap and cheerful, old-school vibe, mix of Chinese food and diner fair, I had a club sandwich my partner had Shanghai noodles, nice variety. All day breakfast. Friendly owners/staff
Neighbourhood divey, diner. Huge portions at reasonable prices. The husband and wife do everything on their own and work really hard. Very casual place so whatever you imagine for service and atmosphere at a divey diner is what you will get but its great because no one bothers you :)
I love the food here but dont let the old school look of the place discourage you from buying. You can get Chinese food, all day breakfast and sports bar food.
Don t let the stuck in the 90s vibe fool you. This local family owned business knows how to make breakfast. The pancakes are thick and fluffy, the eggs are always perfectly cooked and the potatoes are crispy and full of flavour. So far they cannot be beat. Owned by a kind and caring couple - I urge you to continue to support local businesses. During the pandemic they continue to do take-out
Pretty good food. Nice and affordable.. They come pretty fast too
This place is great. It is affordable and the food is great. Dont be fooled by the bad reviews. The bad reviews are all from yuppie drips that live in the nearby condos and should probably be eating at Jack Astors and Subway, because they dont possess an actual palette for food, because they are too basic.
Amazing flavors and great price. Im allergic to tree nuts and peanuts and feel safe eating here.
The food was tasty and the prices were amazing! This is a great greasy spoon diner thats definitely under the radar. Its a family owned business with a lot of heart. Hope you will eat here
Very delicious food! Portion is huge and price is very reasonable
Love the food here. Old school divey place but the family owned diner has great food at great value. Yummy Chinese combos, beef and broccoli and crispy wings beef chop suey some of my faves and great banquet burgers. Try the breakfast yum!
SO GOOOOOD! the portion is BIG! delish! definitely coming back again!
Incredible, hot, mouth-watering Chinese food with gracious and friendly service. I always get take out here and I m never disappointed!!
Family owned restaurant. Not the fanciest food you will get to eat in Toronto but this one hit the spot and it s very reasonably priced.
First and LAST time buying from here. I ordered general tso chicken and fried rice, they put Litterly a tea spoon of the sweet sauce on the chicken. Such a waste of time and money for a simple grub .
Stumbled upon this place and wasn t sure about it. The other lady waiting for her order said it s actually super good and she goes all the time and gets the beef and broccoli with fried rice. I tried the combo number 2 and it came with beef & veggie, chicken balls, fried rive and a spring roll. All this for $10! Have to say, it s also delicious! Definitely going back :) highly recommend!
So good
Authentic Chinese food, made right before your eyes. I totally recommend it althought its not as fancy on the inside the food and loveable service more than makes up for it.
I enjoyed the food at Queen Star Restaurant. Theyre quick and have reasonably priced food, which is so rare to find in that part of Toronto.
One of the very few places that originally left. Try place while back food was good as being old school. A rare find in the time of corporatization.
Great diner breakfast at a great price. Can t complain!
Authentic Chinese Canada foods old school settings.. Prices gone up understandable Recommend Mom& Pops small business need help try it out
Extremely nice people, who serve good food at very good prices! I love this place.
Love this place
Great breakfast deal. Good greasy spoon mom and pop type restaurant
Had the Combo 2, was really good. Was happy to find a neighborhood Chinese Food restaurant.
Don t expect gourmet or a decent ambience but the staff know what s up and the food is bomb. I m travelling across the city during quarantine just to take advantage of their cuisine. You get more for what you pay for. This restaurant is a Toronto staple. I ll always return. You will not be upset.
Best Veggy fried rice, lots of veg! Their poutine is great as well!
Best all day breakfast in the west! Great Chinese food as well. Best value!!
Cant beat the price for the huge portions of breakfast here! Their Chinese options arent bad either. Dont go in expecting ambience and gourmet food. But at this price, I can guarantee youll come out happy and your stomach full!
I wanted to like it because it s so close by, but unfortunately it sucked. My beef & broccoli dish was very salty. My shrimp fried rice was burnt... like, black pieces & smelled from the bag!!! The spicy shrimp was nothing to rave about. The only good thing was the plain noodles I ordered. Disappointed. Everything was leaking out the bags.
The worst customer service ever! I get that their Chinese but it took 15 minutes to explain we live in Liberty Village only for them to cancel the order because I wanted to pay with a card. They only take cash. Brutal.
Terrible, not sure how this place has good reviews. Food came hot thats about it. Flavour was strange, egg rolls were stale, rice was terribly burnt. Couldnt finish the meal.
All day breakfast! All day breakfast is definitely my favourite and its great to have one place that does it good nearby. I just had the typical standard Breakfast and the potatoes are really delicious!
Worse Chinese food ever . Food was so dry the breaded chicken soo guy had to send back first order.then thay wanted me to get soo guy the next time I order said thay were to busy. Well there well never be a next time.
foods good, staffs amazing. no complaints whatsoever !
Classic family run Chinese Canadian restaurant with huge portions and prices you can t beat! Many options to choose from but my favourite is the all day breakfast. Small gem of downtown Toronto!
Greasy spoon Chinese food that will satisfy a hankering at a cheap price. Closest to a food court Chinese food at First Markham place one can get from Queen West.
The fact that I was able to add 3 pancakes for 2 dollars is like, the best.
Awful food. The fightingin the background really tied it all together.
Good old no BS Canadian Chinese food. My friends got breakfast. Love the classic diner decor. Dont ever change.
Where else can you get four eggs for this price downtown, all day? Where else serves the sunny D style orange juice? Everything about this place is perfect. If Heaven is sitting at queen star with unlimited coffee refills then Im a believer.
I used to live across from this restaraunt. The food is easily an 8/10 and the portions are 10/10. The owners of this restaraunt are from China and have owned this restaraunt since 2000 or 2001 and worked every single day except Christmas day!! This restaraunt is honestly one of my favorites in the city. Go and say Hi to Tommy!!
The only scientifically proven cure for a hangover is eggs & sesame chicken
Great quality food. Fair price. Wonderful people.
I liked this placed
Food quality and customer service are sadly not that good :-/
Best all day breakfast
Very basic Canadian Chinese like you would find in a small town...except its in the heart of the Queen West strip around the Drake. No air conditioning.
I spent $67 on my first visit and I regret nothing. The burger alone is stunning. Like, no question, the most underrated burger Ive had since burger fighter closed up.
I ordered Chinese take out a couple of days ago, and was very happy with the food! We had spicy Szechuan beef noodles, sweet & sour chicken balls, pork fried rice and steamed and pan fried dumplings (which are home made). I recommend this great family run business.
Great food great prices wonderful place to sit down. Very chill and casual
This is where you go after a joint for a decent meal
Food is great here. Its a Queen st staple
Pretty cheap and good food .
Good affordable all day breakfast
I really enjoy this place, it s reminds me of another Chinese restaurant that is now closed down. I order here almost once a week my usual order of beef mixed vegetables and fried rice. i emphasize on the fried rice as I know it comes with steam rice, if I m going to pay extra for the fried rice I expect to get fried rice when my order gets home. Please take down the orders correctly as I don t want to have to walk back. Thank you for your service.
Wonderful price for good quality and quantity. Vegan options make this place a repeat go-to for me - the tofu and veggies with rice dish is filling, well-priced and delicious. I am very grateful to find this place in usually-overpriced Toronto!
This place is so unassuming, has delicious food, extremely cheap prices, friendly staff. This is everything I want in a local establishment. Highly recommend the breakfast.
Food is delicious and cheap. The only complaint I have is that visa transactions cost you $1. Other than that its a great place to grab whatever food you crave as they serve anything from breakfast food of all sorts, to burgers and sandwiches and chineese food.
Great breakfast and even better service. For lack of better terms, a delicious, cooked to perfection meal and one of the best tequila sunrises.
Great food for the price
One of the few authentic greasy spoon diners left in the area. Decent chinese food, but I find I go for breakfasts or cheeseburgers even more. Cheap, easy, no-nonsense. Surprisingly spacious inside.
Good food good price. Typical greasy spoon
One of the only places you can get a cheap (but still good!) meal in the neighborhood! Coffee is decent, food is good, and the fact that I can have a hearty breakfast with coffee and only pay $10 (including taxes and a good tip) is unbeatable for this area.
This place is a no-nonsense diner with good, cheap food. No need for ambiance or music when you just want a quick bite for when youre hungry. Most of the menu is under $10 and will fill you up. Amazing assortment of food from all day breakfast, to burgers and souvlaki, to Chinese cuisine. Service was quick, food was good and its location is convenient. Will definitely be returning soon.
A full breakfast (coffee, toast, eggs, sausage, home fries) was only $5.50 !! Can t beat that
Quick Greasy cheap breakfast and friendly staff. 2 eggs, sausage, toast, home fries and tea for 5.50. Will come again!
Good food for the price. It would be nice if they had mixed greens with their breakfast or other dishes.
Coming here is like wrapping myself in a blanket full of my mom s cuddles and kisses. So cozy and yummy and such a hard working staff. Regular joes coming in for a fresh and well made meal with a coffee. My favourite place in the area. Oh, and did I mention the time-encapsulated prices?! Amazing.
Great breakfast. Good service!
Super cheap and delicious!
Pretty good for the low prices.
Wow. So happy to find this hidden gem. All the good/great reviews of this place and menu is bang on correct. Breakfast menu starts at $5.50. Thats unheard of in 2018!
Egg roll over cooked. A little on the dirty side but the worse thing is how the 2 younger people spoke to their elders Im assuming their parents. Will not return!!!
I have eaten here many times, but today was shocked and disheartened, as the place was empty on a Sunday brunch time. I ordered an omelette, no toast no potatoes and the owner( the female) charged me $2 more for less food! I guess this is her way of making up sales in an empty restaurant.. needless to say I will not be patronizing the Queen Star ever again, and make sure you know the price when you order... Boo Queen Star
Great food..good prices...mom & pop shop..hard working..could use an update..but then prices go up..so leafs it alone..and eat all the good foods here
An amazing price for food that is just okay.
Burgers are amazing(great price huge burger) menu extensive the chinese food very good all day breakfast. Liquor license, owners very nice people
I love this place. Totally unpretentious, cheap as hell, service thats friendly but not unctuous. I only ever order the breakfast, and its basically what youd expect. Standard greasy spoon breakfast made to spec. Very good hash browns.
Cute little family dinner with great prices.
Not the BEST Chinese food but for the price its really good!!! I got number 5. Egg roll, lemon chicken, beef with bean sprouts, and egg fried rice The price came to $10.10
The CHEAPEST and surprisingly delicious meal you could get in the area. At the cost of ambience, you can get a meal for two, taxes and tip for under $20, and leave absolutely satisfied. Dont be discouraged by its appearance--definitely a hole-in-the-wall diner I am relieved to have given a chance. Owners are so sweet, its really a home cooked meal, no whistles or bells. Love it.
