I always enjoy my visits to Sky Dragon. The food is consistently fresh and tasty. Some highlights are the chives and shrimp pancake (#20) and rice noodle roll w/ pork and green onion (#39). It's one of the least expensive dim sum options in Chinatown, but the quality is still good. Great views of the city from the dining room. It's fun taking the elevator or stairs to the top of the Dragon City mall. Are there better dim sum places in the city? Absolutely. But food/atmosphere/staff are great at Sky Dragon, especially given its price point.

Good dim sum, nothing crazy special. Delicious har gow and make sure you get the salted egg yolk custard. Comes in a bun and it’s absolutely delicious, like liquid gold.

Sky Dragon restaurant is located on the top floor of Dragon City mall. I used to come here often with my family when I was a child. Visited here for the first time in 15 years and it was pleasant to see not much has changed (in a good way). If you're looking for a place that has a very traditional chinese feel, this place is it. (The chair covers, plastic tablecloths, red carpet and dragon backdrop). Dim Sum is great but do not expect anything special. Very old school authentic and have all the classic dishes. What I enjoyed most about the food is that, it was light. Most dim sum places I go to, the food feels heavy and I'm thirsty cause of the salt after I eat it. Super underrated and best bang for you buck, in my opinion. Theres only a few dim sum places left here in the Chinatown area and this is probably my favorite. I have now gone a few times since not coming here for 15 years. If you want the best in the general area.. I'd say go to Moon Palace a few blocks down the road the restaurant is very modern. Rol San is place often mentioned down the street, but I personally think its way too hyped and overrated for the quality they serve. Its more of a place you go to if your north american caucasian friend wants to try dim dum for the first time, just to they've tried it. Rosewood one of the ones that has a little bit more modern decor blended with tradition chiense. Has all you can eat which is awesome and a lot more variety on the menu but I feel like their quality has gone down. Dim Sum King on Dundas beside is not bad, very similar to Sky Dragon in atmosphere.. but I got an upset stomach the last time I ate there. Tip: use the elevator instead of stairs. I know security does there best but its a popular place for homeless when its cold. There is often someone sleeping on the staircase levels.

Service took forever. We ordered the taro , claw, and beef ribs with pepper very fatty and gelatinous. I'll probably try again with different dishes. Very authentic

Recommend for classic dim sum dishes. They sell dim sum even in evening. It's a bit hard to find if you go there first time - best to use the elevator. Good price. We went first dinner so there weren't much people. Not sure if they do carts for lunch

Old school dim sum restaurant located in Dragon City. It's been around for a while, lots of locals; a lot of older Chinese people and families, especially on the weekends. It's one of the few dim sum restaurants where they still push the dim sum carts around. You can order from both the dim sum carts and from the menu via your server. The decor is old, probably hasn't been renovated since it opened but works for an old school dim sum spot. They do the classic dim sum dishes like Siu Mai, rice noodles rolls, and congee pretty well. Their ha gow isn't bad either, but the skin is a bit too thick. I would avoid the fried food here, they don't do that very well, the oil isn't hot enough, their fried dishes are on the soggy side, like the squid tentacle and salt and pepper shrimp was underwhelming. The price point is good for dim sum in Chinatown, in comparison to the other dim sum spots nearby. They're definitely more competitively priced. Bill was $120 for 5 people. Overall still a dim sum spot that I would be happy to visit again, but would stick to more classic dishes and avoid the fried ones.

Well known best dim sum restaurant in the heart of China Town. Plenty parkings right in the basement. Spacious and bright. Excellent customer service. The server Tina and the other male server with a blond ponytail were very polite and courteous. They both checked on our table multiple times to make sure everything was good. Dim sums served hot and fast. They tasted pretty good. The hand made rice rolls were soft and delicious. The owners Mr. & Mrs Lam were very friendly and kind. Highly recommend!

A nostalgic classic. Been going here since I was a little girl. Food is the same basic dim sum you would get anywhere. The cart ladies were pretty aggressive in serving food when we already had it (clearly can see it on our table) or our table was full of other dishes. Other than that, its pretty much typical Hong Kong style dim sum.

Dim Sum on a Sat morning The old vibe is gone now food of lower quality, cheaper ingredients and of course higher prices plus now they are into upselling onion/garlic crab dish $43 to get more profit margins I didn t mind the upselling if it genuinely tasted good but it hardly has any flavor what a scam and disappointment as for traditional dim sum (see eggplant photo) just dripping with oil which indicated reused and not well heated oil again disappointment to outrage will not ever return!

delicious! Overall satisfied! The prices are not written on the menu, but they are listed on the official website, so take a look. Meat, vegetables, and fried rice were around 20$, and dim sum and porridge were around 5$. Tea is served immediately and free of charge. If you leave it, you can take it home. There were a lot of people who only did takeout or took Uber. Dim sum with something like yakiniku sauce and orange vinegar? (I was sad that there was no vinegar soy sauce). Everything was delicious, but I especially recommend the beef lib (beef with bone). You can also use credit cards (other than Amex).

So I just want to share, if you go anywhere for Dim Sum and they charge you for tea per person? It s your choice not to tip, and tip if you feel deserved. Here s Grumpy s tip, Do use your CREDIT CARD, in any Restaurant that you feel NICKLE and DIMED YOU . Are customers supposed to bring there own beverage?

Laminated menus with English and photos make it easy to order. You add your choices to a numbered paper cheque. The Har Gow and Sui Mai were great, found the green onion pancakes very greasy and crispy, appearing that they had been reheated by frying (prefer softer, less greasy), the folded rectangular rice noodles with shrimp were good, but not notable (very similar to the Har Gow, and would have preferred a different filling). We also ordered some fried rolls with a pork and shrimp filling that were quite good (cant remember what theyre called!). Prices are reasonable. The staff was attentive and we had great service. The decor reminds me of a wedding banquet hall which has become a bit tired. Large round tables dominate. The chairs have covers which have become a bit beat up. Its not terrible at all, its just a bit blah. The lobby has 5 singing claw machines filled with plush characters, though the instructions are in Chinese. Parking: There is a parking garage in the building, and a Green P lot across the street.

June 22, 2024

I recently visited the restaurant, and unfortunately, my experience was not very pleasant. The food was mediocre at best, lacking any distinctive flavor or presentation. However, the most concerning issue was the excessive amount of oil on the plates. It was clear that the dishes were not properly cleaned, leaving a greasy residue that was quite unappetizing.

Cheap, fast, delicious. Moreover, the atmosphere is retro and nice. Its so Chinese that you feel like youve wandered into China. Credit cards can also be used. But you cant use Amex. It is located on the top 5th floor of the building. Press the T button on the elevator. The three of us ate our fill and leftovers cost around $130. Prices are not listed for each item, but no matter what you order. I think its about 8 dollars.

The food is adequate. The service can be tricky. I prefer Rol San. I have been to Sky Dragon several times. Most of the time because Rol San has a long line up. Food is ok at Sky Dragon but I just dont like to be upsold or asked to get the dish I dont want constantly. I like hot and sour soup and its on their regular menu, but every time I try to order it, the waitress always ends in a panic and has to get someone else to take my order. Not only that, getting the right size of the soup we want is a constant challenge. I usually try to get a small/personal size bowl because there are usually just two of us. Every time I have to double or triple check in both English and Mandarin, so there is no confusion which size I am ordering. The price difference is $6 vs $20.95 for a family size big bowl. I failed that today when I ordered a small size, the family size bowl came and was shocked when we were paying. I had to gently complain to the lady in the front and she gave me a discount of $4 and said next time I should order the small size..... Duh.. lady I did... And triple checked. Lol anyway food is ok. There is usually no wait. I would check the bill carefully. The lady in the front also misread the price on the menu and tried to charge me 29.95 for a family size bowl of hot and sour soup.

It s in this small shopping complex at the very top. But there isn t any signage telling you so. My friend and I asked one of the other stores where to find the restaurant. The food was just okay. Went for dim sum on Chinese New Year Day - year of the dragon. You can order à la carte. The laminated menu has colour photos and items are clearly numbered for easy ordering (tip: order the pai gwat fan). There are also carts with different sim sum that are pushed out of the kitchen. Food is fresh. Service was actually great. We were seated right away, they refilled out tea pot without us having to ask and they cleared dishes quickly. It was sunny out and as the restaurant is on the top floor, the restaurant was filled with sunshine. We enjoyed our food, the service and ambiance. Thank you!

Came in for a catered event during dimsum hours. Food was alright, but the service was a bit slow and they were pushy is getting our table to order extra food. There are definitely better places in Toronto for dimsum, but Sky Dragon is one of the few dimsum restaurants with push carts rather ordering everything a la cart. Some may like the latter, but I find the former more nostalgic even if its less efficient.

The reason to come here is the atmosphere. There are certainly tastier dim sum spots, but, Sky Dragon is fun. From the elevator ride up in the sky to the vast open space with cute carts coming by with dim sum. It s also family friendly and my friends will bring their baby no problem in her stroller. Everything is decent and yummy but not out of this world. The dumplings were good, sticky rice was good, shui mai was also good. Sometimes the food is not as fresh as it ideally should be. Service for certain things could be a little more timely and it affects food quality. For instance, we ordered a drink and it was very hard to get it. I think we asked two people before it came near the end of the meal. I d take a star off elsewhere, but you come here knowing there may be a language barrier issue and that may affect the service. I d definitely come back.

December 22, 2023

This was probably the worst restaurant I have ever been to. Very chaotic and the staff had a hard time understanding English native speakers. I showed up with a group of 30 and are tables were not ready which I made reservations a month before. They were surprise that we showed up. It was La cart where people walk around yelling types of food at you which you didnt know what you were getting and they never had enough for a full table with a big group. It was not clear if we had a server or not or if we could order off the menu. The person in our group who spoke Mandarin was able to help but they just rushed buy without asking if we wanted anything on the menu. We never got any drinks. Nothing was clearly explained how everything worked. I just left as it was clearly not for those that want more of a sit down style restaurant. Just imagine being in a English speaking country and not being able to be understood in a restaurant? Thank goodness we had someone that could help with understanding what we were being served.i never eat anything and left the group as it was to much and overwhelming and not very inclusive place to go.

The staff is very friendly even if they dont all speak English The food is solid 8/10 You will not leave hungry Price is good The less good: Since covid, they have been severely understaffed. It sometimes takes a long time to get food Ordering from a waiter can be unreliable A few of the items that made this place extra special like the sweet tofu or the lady grilling dumplings in the back of the dining room are missing I come there regularly, a couple of times a month. I went this weekend for new year and the understaffing issue was quite bad. We ordered from a very overworked waitress and after an hour, not a single item had arrived. We did get plenty from the carts though. My advise to management, is hire more staff.

I dont often give 1 star reviews, but this was some of the worst Chinese food Ive ever had. My parents were visiting and they wanted Chinese food so we ordered from her. We ordered noodles with bean sprouts. Not only were the noodles burnt, there were no bean sprouts. We also ordered Cantonese onion pancakes. They were so thin and all grease. It was the consistency of a grease soaked paper towel. It also said it came with 2 and we only got 1. We asked for duck or plum sauce but received neither. The chicken balls were quite dry, and came with what I think was supposed to be sweet and sour sauce, but it was basically vinegar dyed red, and we got very little at that. Very disappointed with the flavour and attention to detail.

Pretty mediocre dimsum. Chicken feet and black bean spare ribs were decent, but other dishes were all quite bland. The dumpling skin for the har gow and rice rolls were too thick. We took some leftovers home and only noticed then that one of the BBQ pork buns was actually a ginger chicken bun. Otherwise, their service is quite polite and efficient. We didnt order from the menu but carts came by relatively often - selection is more limited but they had everything we wanted anyway. There are better spots for dimsum in other parts of Toronto but if youre downtown and dont want to wait for a table, this will do the job I suppose. Clean bathrooms too which is a slight plus.

My partner and I are huge fans of dim sum. We have been to most of Torontos most noteworthy establishments. We have to say, this one isn t it. Our experience here was, well it was uncomfortable. We arrived at about 1pm which is usually cart service time. They informed us they don t do cart service. We were led to a table but a very curt women who tossed us a menu, a sheet to fill things out and a pen. Our table was crooked and basically 100 sheets of plastic on top of each other. Which is fine. She then went to a table and gathered up all the dishes on this loud crashing motion and threw the bag into a bin not far from us. It took 20 minutes to see her again after we tried flagging her down, to get drinks. We gave back the sheets. The first item came out cold. The next were fine. The potions were smaller than we had thought they would be. We ordered 7 items and got 5 of them. They just never brought the rest. The decor is dated and it s not the cleanest place. It s like stepping back into the 1970s and just watching a beautiful space - they have outdoor roof patios all around. Just be left to fall apart. We cashed out and we re charged more then the menu prices, by like as much as $4. Overall. We were sad. We wanted to love this place. The solid reputation they had/have must be from a long long time ago. Today this restaurant is a very unpleasant place to visit, with few options and what they do offer, what we tried was very poor quality. The decor is dated and the cleanliness is an issue. Perhaps with time they can restore this restaurant to its former glory. For now it s a relic that s been poorly cared for in one of the coolest physical spaces in Toronto. With views of Toronto skyline, it s a shame that what is outside is more interesting than what is happening in the restaurant. Rooting for this business to get it together and hoping the poor experience is temporary. We won t be visiting again as there is Rosewood and Dim Sum King that simply are up to the task of being some of Torontos best dim sum spots and are steps away.

Its a bit dated, but reasonably priced food and enough space not to feel super cramped made it a decent spot for lunch. Wasnt busy at all when we ate during a weekday at lunch time. Kid-friendliness: Offered high chair for our baby. It did need a clean/wipe down before use as it wasnt that clean.

Definitely really different from dim sum I have back at home (NYC). The food was good but service was very lacking. The lack of carts being rolled around and servers taking 10-15 minutes to refill your tea was a bit frustrating.

Keep going all the way up to the top floor to find this unexpectedly nice restaurant in the otherwise shabby Chinatown mall. Their prices are very reasonable and the dimsum staples of crystal shrimp dumplings (har gow) and turnip cakes (lobogao) are tasty and substantial. Tea is $1.50 per person, and theres also a charge for water.

Sky Dragon Chinese Restaurant is a lively dim sum go-to eatery located on the 4th floor of the Dragon City Mall, serving traditional Chinese food options with a patio overlooking the beautiful city views. This restaurant has been in business for many many years, I always heard about its existence but just never got the chance to go all the way up to the 4th floor to try it. I came here for my 1st time after getting regular blood test on the 3rd floor lab, may as well check this resto out. Moment I walked in, I have to say, you could tell the building and the restaurant is aging, things seem old including the table cloth and the chairs. But it does its job I guess. I really find it fascinating that this resto has a nice patio overlooking our beautiful skyline. You could even spot the CN Tower from here. They have a few tables for those who wants to dine outside. The service here was good though, the staff were friendly to me. They asked me for my choice of Chinese tea and then provided me with a big Dim Sum menu that shows pics of each dish. I ordered my favourite Har Gao (steam shrimp dumplings), Shui Mai (steam pork dumplings) + a bowl of shredded pork century egg congee + a stir fry bean sprouts ho fun. When the dishes arrived at my table, they were big portion and I couldnt finish them and had to ask for take out boxes. They were tasty and delicious. I really enjoyed the congee in particular as it provided some crunchy fried stuff on the top with chopped green onions. Prices were decent as well as they charged you Dim Sum based on small, medium, large, extra large or special. Most Dim Sum items are reasonable at medium or large or extra large. NOTE: Whenever you go to Dim Sum, they normally charge you for the tea per person. I know many wouldnt notice until the bill arrives. But that makes sense as they specially provide a Chinese tea that you asked for and a teapot specially for you. When you go to a regular restaurant, they do charge you for a tea/coffee, same deal. Normally, they charge between $1.50 CDN/person to $2.00 CDN/person for Chinese tea at Chinese restaurants, which is reasonable. Parking: There is a paid parking garage right underneath the basement of this shopping mall and where the restaurant is located. There is a slow aging elevator that will lift you from the parking garage to the 4th floor of this restaurant.

1. I booked a table by the window 7 days ago by phone. When our group got to there, there was no table prepared for us, even though it was not full. We waited for about 10 minutes standing at the very center of the room and no single one came to us to talk. 2. Price was more than doubled than 4 years ago and 3 orders of dim sum cost us CAD75. 3. Food taste is very so so.

The Sky Dragon restaurant has been one of the most formative experiences of my life. From the moment you step in, the way time flows disconnects from the outside world. The atmosphere is like that of the biblical purgatory, envoking a simultabious feeling of beloning and the discomfort of an omnipotent being silently watching you. Half way through the meal at four pm, I looked out the window, and it was suddenly night. The pictures on the menu are seemingly randomly selected, and do not even attempt to match the description of the food. This keeps the diner on their toes. Some of the food is delicious, and some seemingly from an alien planet where carrots cannot be cooked through. The portions are massive, and everything is affordable. The price is almost completely irrelevant though, as when you leave, you will find that 20 years have passed you by. Everyone you know has left you for dead. There are two contrasting forms that I have taken throughout my life: me before, and me after Sky Dragon. Nothing will ever be the same. This all being said if I could go back in time, I would go here again.

Best dim sum place that I know of in Spadina Chinatown (and Ive been to a lot of them). Been going here since the 90s, and while it did have an era where the decor went down hill, the magic is back. A great place for an event, small or large. The food has always been amazing, and I cant recommend this place enough. A must go. Vegetarian options: There are quite a few vegetarian options. I have not checked about vegan though.

Food wasnt all that great. Service was even worse than that. Asked for cutleries and chilli 2 times and the waitress did not pass it to us. We walked to their waiters station and helped ourselves to it. The restaurant wasnt that busy too but the waitress were constantly rushing about everywhere. All that rushing but no service quality. However, when a white couple and child showed up, the waitress was suddenly so observant and caring for the customer even initiating to ask if the couple wanted a high seat for their child.

Came here for dim sum. The fried food is soggy, their chili oil tastes old and we found a weird hair (beard hair?) embedded in a dish. The food was overpriced for what we had. Do not recommend at all.

The Sky Dragon Restaurant is an old-school dim sum classic. This eatery has been cemented into the foundation of Torontos China Town for decades. Here they push the carts of food around in traditional fashion but you can also order from the comic oversized picture laminated menu card of accurate image representation. This restaurant is typically busy during peak times so waiting for a table is sometimes in the cards but often worth it. The decor is a mostly stark white-like walls and ceiling with limited decoration. The slip covered chairs and white linen table cloths covered in plastic offer an authentic dim sum setting. Located on the fifth floor of the Dragon City Mall in the heart of China Town, the plated glass windows offer an interesting view of Toronto and part of its skyline. The unassuming decor is trapped in the later part of the past century and could use an injection of life and spirit. It would seem this dragon has long since lost its fire and wings yet it lives on like a dragon should, for a very long time. The food is traditional and should present few surprises to any person familiar with dim sum though it is a bit hit and miss. Some dishes may not be as hot as others when the cart is being pushed around for an extended period but you can order from the menu and avoid the cart service if you really wanted to. Across the board the food is average or below expectation. No single food item stands out to me here and a few items were hardly worth eating. There is no life in the food here. There is no joy in the kitchen. I can not critique individual menu options as the entire offering came from the same approach. For a lively dining location during a peak lunch hour on a Sunday, the food was boring and uninspired yet there are lots of options for meat eaters and vegetarians. The Dragon is also kid friendly. The service was muted and lackluster, not what you would expect during a peak lunch hour. Ordering additional drinks and napkins etc. was slow and occasionally fell on deaf ears as we had to request things repeatedly in order to get them to the table. Even at the tail end of the rush, as patrons departed, the service was lacking and uninspired. The bathroom was in good order and obviously looked after and attended to. Too bad the Dragon City elevator had a mild stench of urine inside of it. The Dragon City Mall itself is a faded remnant and the last time I recall it in full function would be in the 1990s. The central atrium holiday decorations are a clear status indicator the Dragon City Mall is in poor standing. Both the restaurant and mall are wheelchair accessible and there are multiple Green P parking locations and municipal parking locations in the near vicinity. The best feature of the Dragon City Restaurant is the bill. This is likely to be the most significant aspect to maintain attendance. Mediocre food and second-rate service has a functional rate and the old Dragon is relying on it. You will be hard pressed to find dim sum cart service downtown in a big city at this price point. A table of five hungry adults can stuff themselves with tremendous amounts of food at the Dragon for a mere amount of money. Overall I give the Dragon City institution at 280 Spadina 3.5 out of 5. I even suggest you try it at least once.

The important things such as taste and Dim Sum options are great. Also on the top floor so if you get a window seat you can have a nice view of Toronto. Servers can be friendly and make some great recommendations sometimes. Only cons would be the slower service when busy (understandable), dated decor and water spots where repairs were made due to the old building. IMO these types of cons are how you know the food will be good.

I tried dimsum for brunch. Food flavor is just acceptable. Most of the dimsum tastes so subtle. Need more flavor. The service is the worst. You cant order from menu. Whatever available on the carts pushing around is what you get. If your table is abit far, the carts will never reach you. You end up eating what you dont want to. Asked them to refill tea, the pot came back empty. There is no dimsum sauce (Soya sauce, vinegar, hot sauce) available. After asking, the soya sauce came but not other things and not even small bowl to put the sauce. The place isnt hygiene enough. Washroom doesnt have paper. No sanitizer around. Bill cant be split. Never go there again and not recommend to even try. Very disappointing!!!

Dim sum food was pretty good except I felt we got overcharged. My arithmetic estimate and the waitress who actually wrote up the bill had very large disparities in what the final bill was. I had tallied up the approximate cost ahead of time but I felt like they overcharged us by $20. The waitress scribbled the bill in undecipherable chicken scratch writing that is impossible to read with the only thing I could actually understand being the final cost at the bottom of the bill. This seemed deliberate. I wish I took a picture of the bill to post here now. If your entire group is asian, then you should have no problems and you should absolutely dine here but the old Chinese grannies that wheel the dim sum carts out will dismiss you with a look of disdain or disapproval if your girlfriend happens to be black as was my situation. I felt they pretended not to hear us when I wanted to ask a question. We didnt feel very welcome and the service felt poor for us specifically even though they seem to treat all their other all-asian customer groups (mostly older asian couples and a few all asian families) with laughter and conversation. This didnt feel like a place where we were their ideal customer. Im sure this restaurant serves authentic dim sum because something similar happened at a really authentic Indian restaurant in Brampton called Tandoori Flame (its not the casual strip mall butter chicken roti take out but the kind of authentic Indian food restaurant that only Indians know about). They clearly have more than enough customers to sustain their business for the next century so they wont need our business. We do not plan to return. If youve been their loyal customer for 30 years regardless of your ethnicity or if you are asian and speak a very fluent Hong Kong dialect of Cantonese (none of that CBC Cantonese that will make their staff roll their eyes and start speaking to you in English), by all means eat at Sky Dragon. If not, then save yourself from disappointment. There are several other dim sum restaurants within 100 meters of Sky Dragon that is staffed by both younger English and Chinese speaking asian and caucasian serving staff that treat each and every customer like gold with equally good food that Ive tried where the bill is clearly stated and correctly calculated.

Scam artists check your bill - they purposely overcharge you. We were overcharged but their writing and calculations are so messy it confuses you. Service was also awful. Great when putting in order but when we asked for fork and spoon, we had to ask 3 times before they got it for us. This place was good pre-pandemic, but I feel like they are overcharging AND miscalculating to recoup what they lost during the pandemic. We got charged $100 for what used to cost us $50. Never going back again. It does not feel good to be blatantly taken advantage of I get it if business is rough and you need to increase prices, but don t purposely calculate things wrong - that is called stealing. But I did t want to make a scene in front of our kids and ruin the rest of our day so I let it go but never going back again.

The meat of rice rolls must be mashed or added with pork liver, so that it tastes delicious.

Sky Dragon has been a pillar of the downtown Toronto Chinatown scene for over 30 years. Its like stepping back in time going here, the decor has a classic Hong Kong restaurant feel that I find very special especially in contrast to the sleek modern look most restaurants go for today. Many Chinese Canadian immigrants at one point or another have passed through Sky Dragon, often a taste of home during a very tumultuous first few weeks in a new world. I know some people reading this think this is all irrelevant and just want to know if the food is good (I thought it was, though this relies heavily on your ability to know what to order). I however do think this is extremely relevant to how I review a restaurant. Food to me is a form of communication, it can be an expression of culture. It is for this reason that Sky Dragons place in GTA Chinese Canadian history is deeply interlinked to my experience eating there as a whole. As such, it is an easy 5/5 for me, although Id like to reiterate that the food is very yummy too!
