Sunnys Chinese is inspired by high energy dining cultures found throughout China. From Shaokao spots in Chengdu and Xi’An to Dai Pai Dongs in Hong Kong, we look to regional traditions to create an experience that’s casual and playful.
Finally made it to Sunnys Chinese for dinner after trying to book for a while – it was worth the wait! We ordered bok choy, Husband and Wife Beef, Twice-Cooked Pork, and the Miami Beef Short Rib, along with a smooth, easy-to-drink sake. Portions were bigger than expected (the server gave us a heads-up), so we felt like we could have done without the Husband and Wife Beef dish. Everything was delicious and full of flavor, but our favorite was definitely the Twice-Cooked Pork. For dessert, we had the Blackbird HK French Toast and the Daily Soft Serve—both delightful. Service was quick, friendly, and informative despite it being a busy Monday night. Highly recommend!
Came here with a friend who is not familiar with Chinese cuisine and she enjoyed half of the food we ordered. As a person that has had Chinese food before, the food here is nothing special. You can probably find better options in Markham with half the price and 10x the flavour. Unsure how they received the Michelin star. The service was alright in the beginning but after all the food has arrived, no one came to check on us anymore. When we finally asked for our server, she came and asked us “what do you want?”, a little bit surprised by her attitude.
i ordered the silver needle noodles - it was okay, not very remarkable. it’s also on the fatter side of noodle and it’s not a thin texture - take note! the orange chicken though was interesting - it doesn’t taste as sweet as other orange chicken outside and retains the spice of the peppers. it’s also more crispy than chewy which is rare for orange chicken. the orange slices provided were also refreshing. the dessert though - WOW. it was so filling. it was very good. the house special soft serve ice cream (soymilk flavour) was great not too sweet and the sesame toast hk style had a really nutty flavour, was so crispy and caramelly flavour. so good. please order this.
The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered Dan Dan noodle, the short ribs, the tiger salad, and the French toast. We would for sure reorder the short ribs, tiger salad, and French toast. Note that the short ribs have Sichuan pepper leaves a tingly feeling in your mouth. The French toast was the best dessert I’ve had in a long time. Crispy and saucy at the same time. Will eat here again for sure! Photos don’t do justice.
Such a hidden gem of Kensington market. Food was delicious, with a large variety of menu options from different regions in China, great for sharing. The Silver Needle Noodle’s wok hei was fantastic, and the Husband & Wife Beef are beautifully flavourful. For desserts, the Black Sesame French Toast is a must-try, but I also loved the soft serve.
Had a great experience at Sunnys Chinese. The place is very cozy with nice decor. It's just a bit confined. Otherwise, it was okay. The foods are great as well. I highly recommend the Orange Chicken. It comes stir-fried with their signature sauce, but the chicken still holds its crisp. As for the portion, I would say 2-3 dishes + rice is enough for 2 people. We ordered the toast for our dessert. However, our order was omitted and only realized after 15 minutes (which was not a big deal). Our server apologized promptly and offered the toast on the house. Overall, it was a great experience and will come back to try other menus.
I had a great experience at Sunny's. Service was excellent and and attentive although we went around the busiest time (around 7:00) so everyone was busy and bar was backed up. We had our drinks comped so I wanted to mention that we were appreciative of that. Other reviews suggest that cheaper Chinese food could be had elsewhere, which is true and understandable. The flavours are authentic and familiar but are slightly pricier. But I feel like, due to the location in the Kensington neighbourhood, your more here for the vibes and drinks. The food is tasty, greasy, good drinking food to be had with friends. The mapo tofu is spicy, with great pepper flavour. The orange chicken was sweet and crispy, easy to eat. Silver noodles had a familiar salty stir fry flavour and the noodles were bouncy. Garlic green beans were okay, quite a small portion, but the vermicelli noodles underneath were flavourful. Overall, enjoyable experience that we'd share with more friends.
Visit for first time in the weekend. The decoration and atmosphere is great, I love the aesthetic of the place, color, illumination and music. Service stared good and strong, they were very nice, refilling our water before we even need to ask, and helping us to order. However as after we were served the food I felt a huge lack of attention to our table. When the food arrived, I asked for a bowl of rice since I notice most of the dishes were too salty and I needed something to balance it. Sadly I was to wait 20 minutes! I was there not eating food trying to make contact with the server to ask about the rice, but no one stopped at our table on that time and our serves just kept walking fast without even looking at the table, so after 20min I had to ask a runner for my rice. And at that point I knew they didn’t even place the order because I waited another five minutes for the rice. For an Asian restaurant I think it is incredible that they did not have rice ready to serve, and took so long to even acknowledge that they forgot. Worst part they did not apologize and they did charge me for the bowl of rice. Other than that, the food was good, best part was the squid and the French toast, the rest of the food was delicious but not that special, specially for the price. Drinks were med, we order 4 different ones and we only like one. Will come back again to see if service gets better.
Sunnys Chinese has really good food in a fun, lovely room. A restaurant must have good food, of course, but it s more than just the food at Sunny s. Amazing experience here
Sunny s is a hidden gem, with a cool retro diner vibe and impeccable food. Some of the best I ve ever had in the city. I m still counting down the days until I have those Dan Dan Noodles again! Huge shout outs to Dee, who was charismatic, outgoing, and so fun to talk to! She made our night so much more special. Her extensive knowledge of the menu turned into one of my favourite meals of all time. I showed her a list of everything we wanted to try, and she curated the perfect tasting menu from start to finish. Thanks again Dee, you re the best. Below is a list of everything we ordered: TO START - Cocktails: Tropics of China, Prescription P - Husband + Wife Beef (cold dish) - Tiger Salad - Jasmine Rice (to share) Take a bit of each dish and put it in a bowl, with beef, rice and salad on your spoon it s the perfect bite! The acidity from the salad balances out the spice from the beef, which makes it pair together really well. MAINS - Dan Dan Noodles - Miami Beef Short Rib DESSERT - Blackbird HK French Toast - Daily Soft Serve (ours tasted like caramel!) Every dish was absolutely unreal. If I had to recommend my top three it would have to be the Dan Dan Noodles, Miami Beef Short Rib and the Blackbird HK French Toast which are a MUST. I would still order everything listed above for the perfect meal. Next time I ll try the Silver Needle Noodle and the Salted Egg Yolk Shrimp too. The Michelin Guide s Bib Gourmand list brought me here and I have to say Sunny s deserves the accolade! Can t wait to go back! 5/5 Highly Recommend
Exceptional service. Delicious meals. My favourites were the Chrysanthemum + Spinach, the Dan Dan Noodles (you can ask for a veg one), the Sea Bass and the Bbq Eggplant.
I had high expectations for their food but food wasn t amazing, Mimi was better
Looked forward for a very long period of time and finally today has a chance to visit this hidden place. Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with the food here. This restaurant is on the Michelin Guide, so we had some expectations before coming. However, when we sit down, we saw zero Chinese chefs (not discrimination, but I expect a Chinese Michelin restaurant should have at least one Chinese chef). We then lowered our expectations. Even still, the dishes were subpar. - Husband and wife beef: not spicy enough and not numbing at all - Rice: undercooked on the outside - Dan Dan noodles: not numbing enough, otherwise not very bad - Water: tap water with mineral taste After looking forward to it for a long time, today I finally had the opportunity to visit this hidden place. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed with the food. This restaurant is on the Michelin guide, so we had certain expectations before coming. However, when we sat down we found there was no Chinese chef at all (not discriminating, but I think a Chinese Michelin restaurant should have at least one Chinese chef), so we lowered our expectations. Even so, the presentation of the dishes was still unsatisfactory. Husband and wife s Fei Pian: not spicy enough and no numbing sensation at all Rice: Undercooked outer layer Dandan noodles: not spicy enough, but otherwise pretty good Water: Tap water, with a mineral taste
Delicious food, good cocktails and nice atmosphere. Great service - the dan dan noodles were our favourite.
The food offered is a delightful mix of unique and traditional dishes. Each item is crafted with care and results in an exceptionally tasty experience. My favourite is the HK toast which is always a great way to end the meal.
I heard of this restaurant a few weeks ago, saved this location on my phone, and made a mental note that I wanted to check it out for a while but it hadn t crossed my mind since. Two days ago, I went Christmas shopping with a friend in kensington and found a few thrift stores tucked away inside an indoor alley and decided to explore all the way to the back. Lo and behold, a sign for a restaurant whose name I vaguely recognize glowed on my face as my hunger dawned on me. We stood there contemplating whether we should go in after a discussion about how I totally had intentions to eat there one day. After opening the door, I realized there was an opaque window out of eye s reach that the hostess definitely saw me and my friend s indecisiveness through. We were greeted by her and another host with the most laid back attitudes you d never expect from a restaurant with the Michelin guide sign hung at the front. We didn t have a reservation so they asked for my name and made short banter on how to spell it correctly which was coincidentally topical to me and my friend (earlier that day, my friend and I were talking about how typically only other chinese people know how to spell my name on first try). With no reservation and no plan, we sat at our bar seats with all our gifts hanging from little below-counter hooks. I immediately pointed out the adorable panda chopstick rests and another hostesses whispered the word amazon to me. She gave us a detailed guide of the menu which was much appreciated (insert aforementioned indecisiveness) and we decided on the mapo tofu, the dan dan noodles, and a bowl of rice on the side. The host from earlier returned to us and asks me if I can help settler something. He asked how to spell my name. He then celebrated his victory as he was right all along. After an incredibly brief wait, we were served the two dishes and the noodles were mixed right in front of us. When I tell you this was the best bowl of noodles I had ever put in my mouth, you better believe I am not exaggerating. The nutty aroma clouds your face before filling your nose. The creamy and oily sauce just melts in your mouth. The crunchy pork grits the perfect way between your teeth. You feel as if all of your senses are transcended into a different plane of existence. These dan dan noodles were an experience like no other. The mapo tofu was good too. I implore my friend and I return so that we may have a chance to try to the french toast. If we weren t so restricted on time, I d order half of the menu that day. As we rushed out the door and wished them a good night, the hostess stops me to apologize for getting my name wrong. This was such a pleasant dining experience.
Great food. Olivia was really nice!
All the dishes we tried consistently tasted amazing. Will come back again!
French toast was
Really wanted to try this spot after hearing so much about it and it didn t disappoint. Loved the husband wife beef, orange chicken and their HK style French toast.
I was excited to try this hidden little place, but unfortunately, the service was seriously lacking. The night began with an incredibly unpleasant hostess that was curt and rude to the point we were uncomfortable. Once we sat down, our waiter completely forgot about us. Thankfully, the other waiters were incredibly sweet and were able to take our requests. However, it meant we constantly had to make an effort to flag someone down. I enjoyed the retro diner-styled space. The orange chicken and the Dan Dan noodles were tasty. That said, Im sure you can find some equally good versions at other nearby spots. The grilled chicken was juicy but flavourless. The Banana Candy cocktail was delicious and alcohol forward. Overall, it was a mixed experience and I probably wouldnt return. The food wasnt memorable, and the way we were treated was really disappointing.
I ve eaten here multiple times and the food, service and quality have never been anything other than superb. Everything is perfectly seasoned and served to perfection. It is always such a delight to enjoy a meal here.
Really enjoyed my experience. Food was very good overall. Only a couple of dishes that were just ok and wouldnt order the next time (the cold meat dish, the spinach dish, short ribs). Noodle, orange chicken, bone in pork chop, squid. mapo tofu, twice cooked pork were our favorite. The french toast dessert was fantastic. Warning, its rich. Youll need to share. This is coming from someone who eats a lot! Service was excellent. Well informed. Multiple people came to our table. Water constantly filled. One of us ordered a drink but it came filled to the top with ice and there was barely any actual drink. So that was a little disappointing. Very satisfying meal and prices reasonable with good portions.
Not worth the hype. The food was mediocre, with portions being small. There are so many other Chinese restaurants in Toronto with better food options at half the price. I would recommend this place only to people who are not familiar with Chinese cuisine
We went there and ordered a variety of dishes and they were all fairly great. There were some dishes that made great use of Szechuan peppers that really provide that numbing heat rather then spice, not to say there wasnt any just that there was a perfect balance of it. Some of the dishes here are definitely meant to be ordered family style I.e everyone shares from a plate but there are some that can definitely be meant for individuals like the dan dan noodles. I would however definitely suggest only coming here if your close enough with the people your going to eat it family style.
The food was delicious, and the service was great! I highly recommend the mapo tofu and the dan dan noodles. The manager recommended the chicken on the charcoal menu, and it was a good compliment to our mains. The HK toast and the HK milk tea ice cream was excellent. I would definitely come again.
Modern Chinese restaurant in Kensington neighborhood. Difficult to find the location as it s sort of hidden. Chinese dishes are tasty and with modern twist. Good service and casual atmosphere. Perfect for dining with friends.
Had a great dinner at Sunnys! The orange chicken was delicious. Mapo tofu and Dan Dan noodles had so much flavour and spice. Was pleasantly surprised I loved the toast! Would definitely come back. Cute atmosphere inside
Really glad to be sitting at the bar and have the opportunity to be served by Monique and May. We ordered husband and wife beef, silver noodle and charred chicken, with a glass of tropics of China cocktail each. Everything was yummy but most importantly was Monique s passion on Baijui and her taking that extra mile to share her knowledge with me and my friend. This is truly what made our night so memorable; thanks Monique.
Well priced, high quality dinning. Would highly recommend the Husband & Wife Beef as well as the Orange Chicken. HK toast is also not to be missed.
TLDR: Reserve ASAP and run here. Don t walk. 12/10 and would definitely come back. My wife and I were visiting from NYC and stayed in downtown Toronto (Ace Hotel) during our trip. We heard Toronto has a stellar Asian food scene and this did not disappointment. Everything from location, ambiance, service, the food itself . Where do we even begin? The place is in downtown Toronto by Kensington Market and while I thought initially the speakeasy vibe was gimmicky, it was still pretty cool to find it. Once you enter, you re immediately transported to a blend of small town diner meets Michelin starred restaurant with an open kitchen to top it off! We sat the bar because that was only reservation available, but the service was still impeccable from beginning to end. We ordered a number of dishes and while we had some favorites, each one was delectable and you can t go wrong. - Black Bean White Fish: catch of the day was Seabass and was served filleted/butterfly, so presentation was . Lightly crispy skin, succulent meat, and umami taste. I m an underachieving Asian, so I struggle eating the traditional whole fish with bone in luckily this dish had almost all the bones removed with most of the fish still intact! - Dan Dan Noodle: very solid choice and while heavy handed on the peppercorns/seasoning, this dish was packing so much flavor, it had a carry on, two checked bags, and freight cargo. Mapo Tofu: This was a bit too spicy for me personally, but I also have a weak spice game. The wife on the other hand, LOVES Mapo Tofu, and not only did she finish the plate, she thought it was top5 best mapo tofu ever. Orange Chicken: Thjs was one of our most favorite dishes and also their flagship signature that all the reviews recommend you get. Don t even think, just order it. Salted Egg Yolk Shrimp: Recommended by our server and we were very pleasantly surprised. Although comes shell/head on, the whole shrimp is edible. The taste reminded me a bit of those egg yolk salmon skin chips that costs like $35/bag with the taste profile and texture crunchiness from the crispy shrimp skin. This were DELICIOUS and I was scarfing them down like boneless buffalo wings at a Super Bowl party - Stir Fried Tung Choy: we needed a little vegetable course for decorative purposes, but WOW WOW. This might ve been my favorite dish. Between the distinctive aromas that come from Wok-cooking and the seasoning/sauce, this dish was the perfect combination of light/airy with complex flavor profiles that made each bite addicting - Twice Cooked Pork: perfectly cooked from the Wok and is no wonder this was our server s favorite dish at the restaurant - Dessert (HK Tea Soft Serve + Toast): I m not a fan of sweets so I usually skip the dessert part, but the wife recommended I try a bite of the soft serve. I blacked out from the unique taste and finished the whole thing. Enough said
Had a wonderful time at Sunny s Chinese! The stand out dishes were: typhoon squid, Dan Dan noodles, and the French toast! Need to go back as we didn t try any beef dishes due to food accommodations with our company. Hard to get a reso close to the date but setting an alert on open table worked for us!
I really loved this place. Delicious flavours and incredibly helpful and friendly team. Thanks!
This is easily one of the best restaurants I have ever been to! The food, drinks, service, and atmosphere were all top notch. Vivian walked my friends and I through each menu item, and were immensely thankful because everything we ordered knocked it out of the park. So delicious, definitely coming back for the tasting menu!
À la carte is absolutely the way to go if you re looking for authentic regional fare. Skip the tasting menu.
No sichuan peppercorn in the husband and wife beef
Super tasty and attentive staff!
The food was absolutely amazing. Some of the best Chinese I ve had. The service was also awesome. A staff member literally gave my grandmother one of her own blazers because she was cold.. and they all made her 76th birthday extra special: birthday wishes, a candle with dessert and sang to her
The food was obviously amazing but the service was so bad. Our waitress was so rude. She interrupted us when asking questions about the menu, rolling her eyes. She never once checked on us to see if we were enjoying our meal. I ordered a drink that I ended up not liking and she didn t once come check to see why we weren t drinking it. You d think for a Michelin restaurant they d care about service a bit more. Not worth your time honestly. There s plenty of Chinese restaurants in China town that are just as good as this with friendlier staff.
The Mapo Tofu reigned supreme. New favourite place!
Phenomenal experience! The food is amazing, the atmosphere is superb! HK blackbird french toast is to die for! Food
The shop itself is fairly hidden but the food was great and the service is top tier. The tasting menu is a bit steep for my taste so Id recommend just getting 2-3 dishes each as opposed to the tasting menu. Much more bang for your buck.
Incredible Chinese food service was amazing. Staff was lovely. The vibes are great. Loved everything we ordered! Farmed eggs, Dan, Dan, noodles and French toast are a must try! Can t wait to go back. Vegetarian options: Ordered the Dan Dan noodles with tofu instead of pork, and it was great.
Legit.
Amazing experience. Worth the hype. Service was fantastic and the vibe was great. Food was delicious - especially the Dan Dan noodles (tofu version) and the squid. Would recommend and will be returning.
i really enjoyed most of the dishes we ordered here. i grew up on chinese food, and have had twice cooked pork before, so i was surprised and impressed by how elevated their version is. it had a good amount of spice, the pork was tasty, and even the vegetables were so so good. i also really enjoyed the tiger salad which was tangy, fresh, and the perfect blend of vegetables. the soft serve was creamy and hk milk tea flavoured which i love, and paired really well with the crunchy coffee bits. our waitress was super friendly and attentive as well ! i was a little disappointed with the dan dan noodles, as i couldnt taste much spice and the noodles werent as chewy as id have liked. however, the rest of the dishes, nice atmosphere and decor, and great service more than made up for it and id definitely come back again
Fantastic (kinda hidden) Chinese restaurant in Toronto! Went there for a date with the girlfriend and we both really liked it. Got to try some foods I never tried before but enjoyed them all. The service was fantastic too, the waitress made conversation, we got our dishes explained to us, glasses of water were never empty and candle never not lit. Highly recommend the tiger salad and twice cooked pork, soft serve was also awesome!
Went to Sunnys for an anniversary dinner. Got the chefs choice courses. We were advised that it was not available for vegetarians, but that they would try to accommodate us (I eat eggs, and will have a bite of seafood occasionally). I loved that they had an option to do the dan dan noodles with tofu. They were delicious. Many creative vegetable dishes were included (loved the squash with lotus root). Im sure I dont need to repeat the rave reviews about the desserts here. Unfortunately, our tiger salad had a piece of beef in it, which I indicated to our server. Also, there were multiple fruit flies sitting on the walls around us, which put a damper on the ambience. Overall we found the service to be lacking. Our table was often cluttered with empty plates, which made for an awkward shuffle when new dishes arrived. Not sure it was all worth the 275$ we paid.
The food was exquisite, varied and balanced. Portion sizes were great, and the atmosphere is so cute. All the food was unbelievable, I wanted to eat everything. I highly recommend the short ribs and the silver noodles! Our servers were so friendly, it was such a special night for our anniversary dinner! Thank you to the chef, kitchen staff and servers for everything.
Sunnys has been on my radar for a while, but for my first visit I actually went for just dessert - and man was it worth it. The daily soft serve was Hong Kong milk tea with coffee crumble, which was amazing - the creaminess of the soft serve with the strong black tea tones made for a not-too-sweet treat. While the soft serve was good, the real superstar was the Blackbird HK French Toast. The nearly-crunchy exterior of the toast plays perfectly with the luxurious mouthfeel of the oolong condensed milk, making every bite a wonderfully decadent experience. On top of all that is the black sesame jam, which elevates the entire dish. It provides the nuttiness of the classic peanut butter filling while adding a smooth and slightly crunchy texture to the dessert. Overall, it is one of the best, if not the best, desserts I have ever had. I look forward to eating it again, as well as trying out their actual dinner menu
The worst service received from any restaurant in Toronto. When asking our waitress when our dessert which we ve waited for 30+ minutes will come, she replied rudely with a series ok s, and never once followed up or went to check on our food. The manager was also unapologetic and condescending when we approached her about the situation. It s a shame that such a highly rated restaurant has such horrible service and staff lacking basic respect.
The typhoon shelter squid was the best calamari I ve had in my life so far. First bite I went wow. ..No dip/sauce needed. Shoutout our server Justin for the recommendation. We even saved the toppings and peppers to mix in with our jasmine rice, that s how good it was. The orange chicken was AMAZING. Crispy and just the right amount of sauce. I ve been craving it since. The French toast was really good too. The yibin noodles were good but nothing worth bragging about and the short ribs had an interesting flavour that really opened up your palette. Wouldn t order again but definitely worth a try. I appreciated that it tasted different from what I ve had before. Going to try the lamb ribs and sea bass next. Ambience was dimly lit and candlelit as well. I like that the kitchen is open facing. Music is at the perfect volume to hear one another, but also can pickup on the beat in the background. Set a nice vibe. Service was the best I ve had in a Toronto restaurant. Didn t even have to ask for a thing, they were quick and extremely attentive without being disruptive. Very cool and friendly staff. Shoutout Justin again for making our first visit memorable.
Full-on hospitality from the get-go. Great buzz in the room. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Food was outstanding. We were made to feel comfortable from the moment we arrived. Don t miss the Ma-Po Tofu!
Food is good for pricing range, the restaurant is clean and nicely decorated. Seating comfortable and doesn t feel congested. Definitely worth the money if going with group, also cheaper. Servers are very kind and charismatic. Overall a very good experience, will return again someday to try the tasting menu.
Great food. Very delicious and strong flavours from each of the various did hard that were tried. Would highly recommend the dandan noodles and HK toast! Atmosphere was very nice as well. The reason for the low review is service. Both our waiters were pushy and condescending. Young asian man with tattoos and young curly haired girl. Made my group feel uncomfortable.
Nothing special about this place, not worth the hype imo. Go to New Ho King or any other spot right beside on Chinatown and you ll be much more pleased with flavours and textures. Only 5* rating will be for the French Toast dessert item. Only reason why I d come back. Reminded me of an elevated funnel cake!
Heard so much hype about Sunny s, we were stoked to finally try it! It s slightly hidden away like a speak easy, was so so fun finding it. Service was brilliant and food tasted very authentic.
Insanely over salted, and overpriced food. Restaurant was so understaffed. Drinks took 20+ minutes, couldn t find the server to ask for the check so had to go wondering around the place to find someone. Save your money and go literally anywhere in Chinatown. Complete rip off.
Food was phenomenal, especially the HK French toast and the soft serve that week was a not so sweet corn
Very unique fusion dishes. The husband + wife beef, typhoon shelter squid, and blackbird HK French toast are absolutely must tries. You may have eaten these dishes in their traditional Chinese and HK form before, but Sunnys rendition of them is truly something else. My fiancé and I couldn t stop eating these appetizer and dessert dishes. The orange chicken is decidedly average. Nothing special at all. Skip it. The silver needle noodles are also great. My fiancé is normally not a fan of this type of noodle, but even she was full of praise for Sunnys version. That said, this dish was not mindblowingly good in the same way as the first three dishes mentioned. Sunnys is not cheap. We got five dishes and two drinks, which after taxes and tips came to almost $200. It s not what I usually expect to pay for this relatively small amount of Chinese food, but Sunnys is no ordinary Chinese food.
Loved the Dan Dan noodles, chicken, greens, and HK French toast!
Blown away. Walking in there from Kensington at 945pm felt adventurous but added to the allure. We sat at the bar and will forever more. Our bartender was on point. Drinks perfect, consistent and exactly as described. I feel like a jerk for not getting your name. Anyway, thank you for all of the suggestions. Who would have thought green beans would be amazing? Twice cooked pork, perfectly seasoned. And while I never do dessert, the French toast was like nothing Ive ever had. Well cross an international border again just for this place... again. Oh and thanks for salvaging my late night cocktail plans.
Had tasting menu. Very disappointing. The pork chop was 50% fat ended up not eating any of it . Of the 8 course none were memorable. Servers were not sure what the dishes were as it was a special tasting menù. Hungry at the end of the meal as left half of each dish uneaten.
this place! Umami in every bite! They are indeed a Michelin-recommended joint, and they very well deserved it Would have loved to try the Chefs platter, but the server warned us that thered be a LOT of food for just the two of us, in which we were not mentally and physically prepared for As some of the previous comments mentioned, reserve some space in your tummy for the HK french toast, THIS IS A MUST! Would definitely go back for more!
Amazing experience! The flavors, the service , everything was amazing! I liked the way it is hidden in plain view in an ugly building at Kensington market!
the service was amazing they ll tell you to get more than you ll need though! I went with 4 girlfriends and we ordered 7 dishes and it was waaaaay too much food. it was al super salty. and towards the end it all started tasting similar. standout dish was the calamari. would go back only for that dish!
I ve always wanted to try this place, and I finally got the chance to make a reservation. I really enjoyed the design and vibe, but it did get a bit loud once all the tables were filled. The dishes I tried were fantastic. Everything was well-seasoned and packed with flavor. They also have a nice selection of Baijiu, which is a good addition. The only downside was the service. It started off well when I sat down and got some recommendations, but things slowed down after I ordered. I had to double check if my request was taken correctly because it seemed like it got missed. Another staff had to come over to get me a dessert menu when they saw me waiting way too long. Maybe I just happened to visit on a busy day, so I d definitely give this place another shot!
Very good experience! We went on a Friday at 5 pm and it was very busy (we had a reservation). Service was nice and fast. Food was excellent. We ordered the squid, pork and shrimp, all very good. The desert was our favorite!! We would go again.
Overall was really happy with the experience. Ordered six starter/mains for four (plus two desserts), which was plenty if not too much. The service was diligent and attentive. Top dishes were the husband and wife beef, typhoon squid, french toast and soft serve. The dan dan was overrated imo. With drinks (for three of us), came out to around $80 per person, so if you re looking for value chinese you can find better options in chinatown, but worth it for something different.
Best Chinese food in the city along with some of the best service as well. Interior was great and the vibe was awesome.
I really enjoyed Sunnys Chinese! It has a very relaxed but upscale feeling, amazing service, and incredibley unique food. We tried the specials and the servers recommendations. Loved the cocktails too! Make a reservation beforehand because it gets very busy for good reason. Sidenote: Its a little hard to find because its not right off the street. You have to walk into side of the building and find the door.
Had beans, stir fried pork, orange chicken & squid. Food is overall tasty but very salty even with rice. Willing to visit again if saltiness is customizable. Our server was almost very hard to catch attention. Took forever for one bill. Otherwise good experience.
Great place nice atmosphere , food and service are good. The best was the blackbird HongKong French toast! Husband +wife Beef Typhoon shelter squid Tung Choy Speckle park hanger steak Milk tea soft serve Blackbird Hong Kong French toast And we witnessed them getting MICHELIN 2024 While we were there
Came here purely because of its Michelin recommendation, and similar to other Michelin restaurants in general in Toronto, it s nothing spectacular. You can find these exact dishes at other Chinese restaurants at a much cheaper price point. Although, the lamb ribs were extremely good and that was its only saving grace. It doesn t seem to be on the regular menu, but you can ask if they have it that day. The drinks were mediocre but tasted kind of strong which isn t my personal preference but it was fine. The blackbird french toast had a black sesame filling which paired pretty well with the soft serve. I liked how the soft serve had a crunchy topping. Probably wouldn t return but glad I tried.
The dan dan noodles and typhoon shelter squid were both delicious. The blackbird HK French toast was incredible too. The atmosphere was cozy, although slightly loud. The patio is much quieter although the menu seems different than the one provided when seated indoors. Overall, a great experience! Staff were friendly too.
A very solid Chinese restaurant discreetly located in the heart of Kensington Market. Great service, unique menu, and good food. Came here for a friends birthday as a party of 6. We ordered the silver needle noodles ($20), stir fried a-choy ($16), some cocktails (about $18 each), orange chicken (~$25), squid ($23), and their take on Sichuan chicken ($33). Total came to about ~$60 per person including tax and tip. I really liked that each menu item came from a different province in China, along with their own twist. The cocktails were solid, all the meat dishes were succulent and flavorful, the a-choy was a great pairing to the meal (as any Asian dinner should), and the silver needle noodles were very intriguing yet delicious. Our server was also very helpful and kind, going to tables very often and explaining the dishes in-depth. I think the only downside I have, along with every other Michelin guide/star rated restaurant, is that the portion sizes left me very unfulfilled for what it was worth. Despite spending $60, I was still pretty hungry after dinner. Overall, Id highly recommend giving this place a try for a special occasion. Very creative menu and great ambiance.
Loved it! The vibe inside is so cute, it looks like a retro restaurant. It was busy and fully booked, but not too loud. Ambience was great, service was great, food was delicious! We got the hot lamb dish (soooo good but definitely spicy), the silver noodles (delicious) and the french toast dessert (SOOOO GOOD!! I dont usually even bother ordering dessert but this was delectable). Highly recommend, and I love that the location looks so sketchy and unassuming, but is actually really lit. The fact they have a Michelin 2023 Gourmand award says alot. Make sure you make a reservation! Update (end of july): went here with a group of friends and unfortunately it seems that they decreased the portions. The green beans also looked completely different from photos posted in previous reviews. Kinda disappointed, as I really loved this place the first time around. You can see the difference in the portions and food in the photos (last 3 photos). Even the desert looked sad (not sure if thats because it was end of night or quality just decreased overall). Overall it was still a good experience, but its disappointing seeing one of your favorite spots start reducing their portions and changing up the quality of the menu items
Was super excited to try Sunny s Chinese as we loved Mimi Chinese and wanted to try its more casual cousin. I am sorry to say that we were quite disappointed and will not return. We had the tasting menu for 2 people with the pescatarian option. Almost every dish is extremely salty, to the point of almost inedible (eg the spinach dish). We were seated at the kitchen counter and saw how much salt one of the chefs was putting in all the sauces! We were secretly hoping that it wasn t salt, but it was! When the server dropped off the noodle dish, she suggested eating it with the salad to cut the heat of the noodles. I believe that each dish should stand on its own, and should not rely on another dish to balance its flavor! I was really looking forward to the milk toast as that was my favourite as a kid in HK, and with all the positive review. This is a case of trying too hard to elevate a simple dish. Milk toast is yummy because the condensed milk is gooey and sticky and super sweet. The thin, scant sesame sauce just doesn t cut it! All in all, I find all the dishes quite forgettable with tastes that are meh and similar to one another. I love the variation and vibrancy of true HK street food. And this is not it!
Impeccable food & service! Would highly recommend their orange chicken and black sesame french toast!
The food was very average. Didn t click pictures of everything we ordered. Don t order the French toast. It was so bad.
Really enjoyed the experience at Sunny s. The orange chicken is a must-try. A few of the other noodle dishes were also quite good, but a bit on the greasier side. The spicy dishes are pretty spicy so may not be for everyone. For a hole in the wall type restaurant located in an alley, the inside looks great and is definitely worth a visit.
I have always appreciated sunnys exceptional cuisine and welcoming atmosphere. Unfortunately, my recent visit left much to be desired, marking a noticeable decline in both food quality and service. The experience began on a disappointing note when our request to sit in the booth on the patio was denied by the waitress. She stated it was reserved for parties of more than four, yet, shortly after, a party of two was seated there. This inconsistency was frustrating and set a negative tone for the evening. We ordered three dishes, but to our dismay, one was exceedingly spicy a detail the waitress failed to mention. Additionally, as we placed our order, she suggested, I will add a side of rice with that to share, making it sound complimentary. However, we were surprised to find it added to our bill. Overall, the service was lackluster, and the food did not meet the usual high standards weve come to expect from Sunnys Chinese. The entire experience was disappointing, and I hope they can address these issues to restore the quality and enjoyment of dining there.
Our server Chanel was incredible, smart, and knew what she was doing. one of the dishes came out with something our friend was allergic too, she rectified the situation and made it worth our while before it was too late lol. I would say this place ISINT a cocktail spot as we were all more satisfied with the bottle of wine we shared rather than any of the four cocktails we tried (we all constantly order cocktails regularly and feel we know whats good). food is king at sunnys <3 Vegetarian options: that a choy is legendary Dietary restrictions: my sister is celiac and vegetarian
Great restaurant can t wait to go back
Went to Sunny s last night for the second time and the food was so good that I had to leave a review. I had gotten the Twice Cooked Pork before, so I already knew that was good (and it wasn t too salty like some people are saying, it was perfect with rice) but yesterday we ordered the Typhoon Shelter Squid, and I m not exaggerating when I say it was the best squid I ve ever had. I m not a foodie but this was definitely the best bite of 2024! Loved the ambience and atmosphere, although it was a little noisy (but that might have been because of nearby tables). For those of you that know, this used to be where Cold Tea was before. The path to get there is hidden through an old mall, but that s part of the fun and a good conversation starter! Because it s an old building though, it can get a little stuffy. Our hostess and our server were nice, but the waitress who we paid with looked like she didn t want to be there and was incredibly rude, even though I was smiling and in a good mood. But overall love Sunny s!
I usually don t give restaurants low ratings. But this was quite interesting . Very pretentious, overpriced and not the best tasting Chinese food. Definitely better, cheaper, bigger portions and more authentic down the street in Chinatown. The hostess was not friendly at all. Not welcoming and made it seem like we were inconveniencing her. Highlight was our nice server who was kind, funny, patient and attentive. I can see the fancy vibe of the small plates and low key location. The interior layout was cute and aesthetic. Maybe just a fun one time thing!
Finally had a chance to pop into Sunny s trading all the great reviews, being a foodie this place deserves all the hype. Our server Jen with her warm smile and attentiveness , the chill vibe on the patio, made for a very enjoyable evening. The squid had a hint of heat which added just enough presence for a wonderful take on traditional calamari and took this dish to a new level. The king stir fry combination of dry and fresh shrimp was equally as good with the greens adding depth and texture Well done Sunny s certainly deserving of all your favourable reviews
Shalalae was incredible. It s not every day that the service can rival the food at a restaurant where the food is of this caliber. I ve been coming annually for my birthday for a couple of years now. Won t stop anytime soon. If you haven t, try Sunny s.
Delicious food, drinks, friendly staff. They offered to swap out pork for tofu for the noodle bowl (Chongqing) since Im vegetarian and I cant believe how good it was. Partner got the orange chicken which was great. Fun atmosphere on the patio. Loved it! Vegetarian options: There are some vegetarian options on the menu and they are very accommodating around modifications.
I really enjoyed the experience. we were welcomed to the place. the servers were aware of the menu and provided recommendations. I enjoyed the food and drink. I would highly recommend the restaurant.
The place is neatly tucked away in the hallway on Kensington Avenue , good food, good atmosphere! Don t worry about the spooky entrance, it s worth it!
The typhoon shelter squid was incredible! Service was also impeccable.
Tasty and refreshing takes on classic and novel dishes. We liked the chrysanthemum spinach, typhoon shelter squid, and HK milk tea soft serve in particular, great flavours and textures. Also tried silver needle noodle, lamb stir fry, and tiger salad. I think tiger salad may be overhyped on these reviews; it wasnt bad, but it was kinda straightforward with a lot of onion, raw cilantro, hence structurally a bit... airy. Visual vibe was fun but the interior needs some major sound dampening. The music felt super loud combined with the conversations, and it wasnt that big of a space.
My expectations had been raised too high by the Michelin review and I was a bit disappointed. Fast, friendly service. Food came out extremely quickly - a little too fast. The Chrysanthemum and spinach salad was good; a nicely balanced cold salad but nothing to write home about. Soft tofu looked good but bland; and the Typhoon Shelter squid is just competent calamari. Looking at the menu now with the Charcoal section; I now realize this is elevated American Chinese food. Steaks anyone? Pork chops? Orange Chicken? My parents would love it. Any chance of a seniors discount?
This place is 5 stars for the Hong Kong French toast, but the rest wasn t as good of an experience anymore as a vegetarian. To start with the good: the HK French toast is incredible, my favorite dessert in Toronto. Pure heaven. I have come here just for the dessert and it was so worth it, and I will definitely be back for it. Skip the soft serve, I personally find it s never that good and the toast doesn t need anything. The vibe is also nice, it s kind of a speakeasy with an unmarked entrance but cool, dark, retro vibes inside. The cocktails are great and interesting too with a large drinks menu. However, there were almost no vegetarian options when I came last night. I came a year ago and they were willing to modify most of the menu to vegetarian, however last night their only modification was for 2 noodle dishes. I don t know if our waiter just didn t know, but this was very limiting and resulted in a poor experience for me. In total there were around 3 cold apps and 2-3 noodle dishes I could order that were vegetarian. I wasn t particularly impressed with the taste of anything we ordered. The cold spinach was surprisingly good but not something I would seek out again. The soft tofu was super bland, I don t recommend. The chongqing noodle (modified with tofu) was so incredibly spicy it was actually inedible. And the waiter didn t warn us at all!! The silver needle noodle was decent however it had egg which was not written on the menu and again the waiter didn t warn us - I don t eat eggs so this was extremely disappointing. And that was everything I could eat save for the salad and a-choy noodles which we didn t order. Again I remember a year ago they were willing to modify a lot more (I think the mapo tofu, the husband and wife beef, more of the noodles) but this time that was not the case. I don t know if the policies changed or our waiter was clueless, but I feel the waiter did a really bad job helping us navigate the menu by also not mentioning how spicy the noodles were or that one of them had egg. Based on this, personally I wouldn t come back for the food only dessert and/or drinks.
Overall good experience. Interesting mixed of cuisine from different Chinese areas, decent portion to share food. Desserts are so good
The atmosphere is good, I enjoyed the interior aesthetic, dark lighting, super busy and crowded with servers running all over the place. Got the Tea Eggs which for 10$ were plain and cold, tasted like regular boiled eggs. We also got the Chongqing Noodles (left) which tasted of soy paste and nothing else. It had a TON of chickpeas, like my bowl had a mountain of leftover chickpeas. The sauce on the noodles tasted as if you just put soy paste and soy sauce together, no creativity, just basic flavours with nothing elevating them (which I am expecting for a MICHELIN RESTAURANT.) The noodles on the right might not be on the menu anymore, but they re most similar to Silver Needle Noodles on the menu. The noodle portion was not enough and not equal to the ratio of stir fried vegetables. I enjoyed this dish more than the other as the noodles where in a more tear-drop shape which made them bouncier to eat but there just wasn t enough of them compared to the oily plain stir fried vegetables portion. Service was good even though it was super busy, it took a while for us to get our bill at the end though and servers would occasionally check in which is surprising for a restaurant of this density.
We are the following items: Beverly creek lamb stir fry (our favourite!!) Orange chicken (our second favourite) Silver needle (close third) Garlic and vermicelli arapargus Chrysanthemum and spinach Xxx tel la spicy jerky Husband and wife beef French toast - this is very black sesame forward, and sweet Strawberry soft serve (rich and delicious) Cold tea Overall great experience!
Service is spot on from the moment we walked in. Regularly checked on, offering plentiful information to help make decisions and ensured that we enjoyed the food. We had the silver noodles, shrimp andthe Hong Kong toast.
This was a great restaurant experience. You get to China Town and need to walk your way through a commercial passage until you find the neon sign at the end of the hallway. When you walk in a completely different and nice environment. I tried different dishes in half portions to enjoy more variety. My favorites were: The Chrisantemus and spinach dish , this is a must! the Silver needle noodles with mushrooms had great taste and texture, and the Blackbird HK french toast was incredible: crispy yet soft , the black sesame seed filling with the condensed milk just made it amazing!!! I tried the squid which was just ok, also the twice cooked pork, however very salty for my preference. I didnt even touch the Jazmine rice that was suggested to have with the food, with the amount of overall food you get, you do not need it imo. Despite the half portions I had to pack some to go, keep in mind the sizes as it can be a lot of food. Service was also very good and food was quick to arrive. The waitress explained everything with detail. Make sure to arrive hungry here!
Ordered Husband + Wife Beef, Mapo Tofu, and Twice Cooked Pork. As a Chinese person, I am deeply disappointed by the food for it is very overrated. The food is very salty and lots of the spicy dishes taste the same, with very little distinct flavor other than the sichuan spice and mala. The food is nothing special and can be found anywhere in Chinatown, but better and at a cheaper price point. The husband + wife dish was ok, but it s no different from one of those side beef dishes at T&T dumped with cooled chili oil. The twice cooked pork, the pork was cooked well but the dish only had 5 thinly sliced pieces of pork and the rest was green onion and leeks drowned in oil. The mapo tofu was also overly salted and drowned in oil, nothing special. I ve heard so much about it and so many good things but it was such a huge let down. Very small portions. The restaurant is hard to find and I wish the sign was bigger. I have no clue how they made it on the Michelin Guide. The best thing was either the rice, the little panda chopstick stand, or the sparkling water we ordered.
Delicious cuisine that emphasizes creative regional Chinese dishes from varying provinces. We loved the Sichuan husband wife beef and Guangdong silver needle noodles. Soft serve paired with French toast is a great finisher.
We went here for my birthday which they wouldn t have known if they didn t ask us if we were celebrating something, love that they do this with every table. Our server, Kate was super nice and took good care of us by asking us about allergies and if it was our first time trying Asian food. We ordered one dish each but the highlight was definitely the dessert, the Black Sesame Toast! Loved every bite of it. Vegetarian options: Loads of vegetarian options on the menu
Amazing food. Found this on recommendation. The best restaurant we tried in Toronto Food
Late post: Visited from New York and a friend recommended to try Sunny Chinese. Really good! I got the pre fix and that made my dinner a lot easier. From the apps to main dishes, everything was good. Altho, I was so full by the third course. Tip: drink less water I sat by the kitchen so I can enjoy the ambience. Must do. The French toast and soft serve is a great way to end dinner.
Best Chinese food in the city. Definitely recommend the Husband & Wife beef and the Orange Chicken!
Almost turned around before we made it to the door. Glad we didnt. Chonqing noodles, mapo tofu both yummy. clean washrooms, stylish speakeasy type ambience. Soft serve and HK french toast desserts were the star!
Finally find time and a reservation time that was convenient to come here. Was super excited. The service and atmosphere was stellar. Trying to find it was tougher (good luck!). Perhaps it was my high expectations from various reviews, but I was expected a the food to be bit more elevated. The dishes we got where the stir fry lamb, the squid and the spinach appetizer. They all tasted amazing, but I think when I think about food like this, the heat from the food drives a lot of the appeal of eating the food, however greasy. Definitely a place to (find) come, and eat at least once. Its fun, youll feel somehow that youre taken care of.
kind and fast service! favs were the soft tofu, a-choy, silver needle noodles, and the HK french toast. if you are vegetarian, the a-choy, vermicelli asparagus, the chongqing noodles, and i think the mapo tofu can be made vegetarian upon request :) Food
Great food and good potions too! Everything we had was delicious!
Sunnys is an absolutely phenomenal restaurant. We went here this week for my birthday dinner and it was exceptional. The food was delicious and so varied, the service was prompt and kind, and the vibes. Oh, man, the vibes in this place are sooooo well assembled. Its so fresh and vibrant. Will be recommending Sunnys! Dietary restrictions: Very wide selection of dairy and nut free dishes!!
My first time at Sunny s. The food was exceptional! Creative, yet not over the top, chinese dishes ranging from Sichuan spicy to mild. Something for everyone from vegans to carnivores. My faves: spinach and chrysanthemum, lamb ribs, grilled trout and the black sesame french toast. Bring a friend, come hungry and try the Chef s menu - you will be amazed. The cocktails. Wow! Generous pours and super tasty. The wait staff were friendly, explained dishes well, attentive but not crowding you. Loved the vibe there - cute patio out back, inside had open kitchen and great atmosphere inside (not too loud). I will go again and again. Vegetarian options: My vegan friend found lots to enjoy Dietary restrictions: Wait staff asked about allergies and restrictions for both food and drink orders. Had options available
Fantastic spot for Chinese cuisine. I finally feel like Ive found some quality chinese food. The staff was amazing and really helped us out. Thanks to them! The atmosphere is also great, as it feels like youve been transported out of Kensington market.
Great food, great service, great ambience.
Gave away our table despite leaving a voicemail an hour before our reservation stating we would be late
Enjoyed the tasting menu, good amount of food. Favorites were the dan dan noodles, beef steak, and salad. The BBQ Eggplant was also good coming from someone who does not like eggplant.
Staff were lovely and very attentive. Food was delicious, although portion sizes were quite small.
The intention to detail is crazy. Such a good experience overall..
Now that Ive tasted this french toast, I crave it on the regular.
Its OK Chinese food, with high quality western service. Had to make a reservation 2 weeks in advance and show up at 9pm. If you are non-asian and want an introduction to Chinese food with cocktail pairings this is a good spot. If you already eat a lot of Chinese food Id recommend going to Congee Queen (casual but high value), R&D on Spadina (foodie), or Lees restaurant (upscale)
Everything was exceptional! Kate was lovely & Jorge was super kind walking us through the kitchen setup.
We had a special family get together and wanted someplace exceptional. The prices are up there but so is the experience. Different people had different favorites but the chefs choice was quite a hit overall. The Bar Manager Monique is excellent and makes Cocktails that you will not regret trying! If you arent sure, read the reviews and find something you will like at Sunnys Chinese.
When I m feeling Sunny I share! When I m feeling like Chinese, I go to Sunny s Chinese at the back of Kensington Market Mall. 5 stars all around! Get the tripe and squid. The chefs are also babely.
I came here with my family for an anniversary and had the most incredible experience. Both the food and the service were outstanding. Highly recommend!!!
I went to Sunnys for a family celebration, and everything--the cocktails, dishes, and service--was FABULOUS. The mixologist and chefs infused every inventive and perfectly prepared dish with a heavenly variety of flavours that complemented each and every ingredient. Truly the bests meal I have eaten in my entire life!!! Kudos to the entire kitchen and waitstaff for making everyone in our party feel utterly welcome and comfortable. A truly unforgettable evening. Thank you!!! Vegetarian options: I highly recommend the asparagus, eggplant and vege noodle dish for vegetarians. The chefs know their way around vegetables and knocked these dishes out of the park!
Overall, the experience was not great, and I am unlikely to return. There are many restaurants in the city at the same or similar price points that offer superior food and service I will break this review into sections: - Service - Ambience; - Food Service No matter how good a restaurant is, you can tell much about it from the service. The people are your brand. Ultimately, Sunny s is disappointing when it comes to service. First, the hostess/manager was very off-putting and unfriendly. Some service staff seemed to be trying to appease her rather than attending to tables. This effectively drove the experience and made it uncomfortable at times. Our server was friendly and well-versed in the menu. However, she tended to direct the conversation to one person to the exclusion of others. At other times, she was inauthentic and insincere in her comments. Id rather she had reserved her comments Second, we were asked how we wanted the bill prior to dessert service admittedly, under ordinary circumstances, this would not have bothered me so much but in light of the overall experience. Since dinner was my treat, when the machine prompted me to tip 18%-25%, I hesitated on whether the service was worth % of gratuity I ultimately tipped 18% out of (what I felt was) obligation. On a positive note, I will say what the server did well was ensure all the plates and cutlery were changed between course. She was also much more personable towards the end of the meal. Last, other service staff was incredibly kind, but overall, the environment felt very anxious (and not because it was busy - which, in my opinion, it was not). Ambience Ambience is important. Ambience is good minus the aforementioned. The decor is not pretentious and the colour scheme was unusual but something we loved. Food Food was good; not great. Some of the dishes had robust flavours while others were bland and left more to be desired. At the prix fix price point, I would have expected more. Perhaps the biggest ball drop was that one of the items we were most excited for (the pappardelle noodles) was not served notwithstanding the server saying something to the contrary. Dessert was the best course by far but there were a number of vegetable courses that we loved. I left feeling that the restaurant was undeserving of the Bib accolade. We intend to try the sister restaurant (Mimi) in the future but may rethink this in light of this experience. Other Comments We were attending that venue to celebrate. Although not expected, given the nature of the celebrations, and informed by our experiences at other restaurants, some of which are far less pricey and rated, I would have thought theyd have done a bit more to ensure we felt celebrated. Again, this wasnt an expectation but does elevate the service.
A good example of modern application of Chinese kitchen. Noodles , orange chicken and cilantro salad are very good. Not too sweet deserts are perfect final touches for the delicious food. Food
A hole in the wall/hidden entrance through the building to get to this Michelin recommended place. There were 7 of us so we tried almost all of the menu. The absolute favourites have to be both the desserts- the HK French Toast and the egg custard soft serve made with soy milk and toffee drizzle. Followed by the Dan Dan Noodles with pork for a great balance of flavours and the Chrysanthemum Spinach as a cold appetiser worth trying. The Typhoon squid and orange chicken were great as well. As for the rest there were dishes like the Red Island Rhode chicken that were lacking in terms of flavour or could have been better such as the rack of lamb ribs (which was supposed to fall of the bone - not quite there). Definitely skip the beef jerky - far too dry and chewy.
An incredible dinner service at Sunnys! Tucked away from sight of the street, this is a lovely cant miss gem. The sunchokes were beyond delicious, crispy, savoury and just perfectly sweet. The long beans and spinach were also very tasty!! Great suggestion for the Mom and Dad beef, its a house classic for a reason. Interesting and very tasty drink menu!! Wheelchair accessibility: All one level
Visited here on a Monday night and tried out the chefs menu for $80 per person. Given that its Michelin star, I had higher expectations coming in. Coming from someone who grew up eating Chinese food, there are definitely other spots where you can get the same quality food. Side note, the chefs menu was little spicy but manageable. Lamb ribs came out cold when we expected it to be hot. We liked the dessert and the menu set was definitely filling. Perhaps it was because we ordered cocktails on the side as well. This was worth a try but will not return. For the price we paid, it wouldve been a nice dinner set at Chinese restaurants.
Every time here , food tasted good.
Hidden in an unassuming spot lies a restaurant with delicious fusion/chinese dishes. I personally liked the orange chicken the most! It was so crispy, savory and sweet. The staff were also incredibly nice, attentive and made sure we were doing well. Atmosphere was small, but homey.
Wow! I didnt know that traditional Chinese flavours could taste this good! Well deserved Michelin recognition.
We had a wonderful experience at Sunny s Chinese for my friends birthday. We tried the traditional Chinese shot but it was super strong so I d reco to add the alcohol % to the menu lol Cocktails were great! We also ordered the fixed menu and enjoyed every single bite Interior design is so cute and love that this place is the old location of Cold Tea! Love that this place is the old location of Cold Tea! Favourites dishes: Dan Dan noddles & ice cream
Slapper after slapper. Everything was perfectly seasoned. Space is cool, staff is attentive and genuine. Location is cool and even edgy if your like a tourist or above 35 or something with kids like me. Braden and David and the rest of the team are Goats plain and simple. Eat here and live your life
Restaurant was superrrr loud but the food was good and the cook in kitchen was friendly
First off, I love the speakeasy vibe of this restaurant - the entrance is so unassuming, and then when you open the door its like youve been transported back to a 50s diner. Our server, May, was super friendly and engaging! She was helpful when it came to making menu recommendations. We ended up getting the orange chicken (crispy but a little too salty) and the silver needle noodles (good flavour). Overall, the food was good but I would not recommend coming here if youre looking for authentic Chinese - there are plenty of other options in this area. If you come here without the expectation that it will be authentic, however, then you will definitely enjoy your experience! I would recommend to try it at least once :)
Beautiful space, delicious food, exceptional service!
Everything was 10/10. Service was so on point, every food item we got was delicious, lots of vegetarian options and modifications, and the vibe was fantastic. Definitely lived up to the hype!
A friend recommended to come here. Glad he did because we never would have found this spot. The restaurant is located in a hallway between vintage boutiques, invisible for people strolling by. It s a hidden gem! Good food, loved the variety. Easygoing ambiance. We had a kitchenbar spot. Not the most spacious table but with view on the (super friendly) kitchen crew. Go Check this place out for yourself.
We had a nice dinner at Sunnys, the food has some unique fusion elements that you dont find in your typical Chinese restaurants. The atmosphere was great, dimly lit and busy but felt cozy at the same time. We were seated at the bar which was pretty uncomfortable so I would recommend getting a reservation for a real table. Service was quick and friendly though like most restaurants these days, we felt a bit rushed when they would sweep away our plates while were still chewing. My favourite things were the orange chicken and spinach & Chrysanthemum salad. Portions were on the smaller side. Overall I would say its good to try once, especially for date night. Unfortunately no particular dish stood out and I dont think it is worth returning given the value for your money. Parking: Large Green P lot nearby, expensive
the food was super delicious and fun! our favourites were the asparagus, orange chicken, and silver needle noodle. we had some non-alcoholic drinks that were excellent, i got the one with hibiscus and it was very good and refreshing. the service was top tier. they were very attentive and helpful with the menu. we shared a bunch of plates and the server staggered the dishes that arrived with dishes that paired well together. the restaurant itself is beautiful. walking through the mall to get to the spot felt like i was back in 2010 going to cold tea. everything was very thoughtful and professional and delicious. highly recommend.
Wow! So fun and Fab! Sunny s is a 10/10! Our server Shalalae was excellent. With wonderful menu recommendations and perfect food ingredient descriptions. We Loved the atmosphere! Can t wait to go back! Food
Sunny s Chinese presents an inviting atmosphere with its charming tableware. The Orange Chicken was the highlight with a perfect balance of crispy texture and flavorful sauce, definitely a dish to return for. On the other hand, the noodles were adequate but didn t stand out. Unfortunately, the French Toast disappointed with an overpowering sesame taste that detracted from the expected sweetness. In all, Sunny s offers a pleasant dining experience with a few standout items on the menu.
Delicious food, amazing atmosphere and friendly welcoming staff! The Tea Eggs were delicious and the perfect way to start a meal, Chou Chow Long Beans were delicious and Silver Needle Noodles were some of the best noodles I ve had in the city! To finish your meal you have to get the French Toast!! Can t wait to come back again soon. Vegetarian options: We dined with a vegetarian in our group and there was a very good selection of vegetarian dishes! Vegetarians won t leave hungry!!
Interesting take on Chinese fusion food. I felt that the portions were okay and shareables were quite small. I really liked the Dan Dan noodles , but didn t need to have my waiter mix it for me as we waited for them to finish mixing - and it just gets a bit awkward. The HK French toast at the end is pretty good!
The service was good, and most of the food was enjoyable. However, the husband + wife beef dish didnt quite hit the mark for me. While the initial taste was pleasant, the chili oil became overpowering after a few bites, making it a little difficult to fully taste the other dishes afterwards. On a brighter note, I thoroughly enjoyed the Silver Needle Noodle.
Let me introduce you to your new favourite restaurant. Lucy worked her magic and so we lucked out as early walk-ins (but don t take your chances). She made our dreams come true. The food, service, staff and clientele were all fantastic. There was even a celebrity amongst us.
Completely overrated. All dishes we had were sub par. Service was excellent.
HUSBAND + WIFE BEEF 24 chili oil, tripe, shank, peanut BBQ EGGPLANT 14 garlic scape, big leek SILVER NEEDLE NOODLE 19 black mushroom, scallion, soy sauce RHODE ISLAND RED CHICKEN 32 sand ginger, flat chive BLACKBIRD HK FRENCH TOAST 14 black sesame jam, oolong condensed milk, butter
Follow @bredgyeats for delicious food posts! They say that good food is well hidden, and Sunnys is indeed tucked away inside a humble bazaar in Kensington Market. I was pleasantly surprised by the tasty, authentic chinese fare combined with a western atmosphere. To start, the Husband + Wife is the ultimate rice monster, as its strong, punchy flavours benefit from a bowl of steamed rice. The combines the perfect amount of spicy numbing chilli oil that makes your mouth dance with the fragrance of the peanuts and cilantro. The mix of beef shank and tripe create a contrast of textures where eat bite releases more of those chilli aromas. Knowing me, I couldnt resist ordering Lamb Ribs, dry rubbed with a sichuan pepper blend and cooked to tender perfection on charcoal to impart a delightful smoky flavour. The meat itself falls off the bone with ease as the fat is charred to a slight crisp that melts in your mouth, blasting your face with a spicy, lamby aroma. The onions layered on the bottom act as sponge to soak up the lamb drippings and are not to be ignored either. These silver needle noodles are a blast in the past for my parents, but a revolutionary novel experience for me. It has this addicting chewy QQ texture while acting as a vessel to contain the smoky wok hei, the umami soy sauce and the fragrance of the egg. The contrast of textures and aromatics provided by the gai lan, mushrooms and scallions make each bite as addicting as the previous one. Problem is, I couldnt stop thinking about the ultimate finale of the night. The quintessential Hong Kong French Toast elevated to new heights, three pieces of crispy yet fluffy toast are saturated with sweet and rich combination of condensed milk and a slab of butter. I could be satisfied there but the fragrant and generous filling of roasted black sesame filling makes it the highlight of my night.
The food was pretty good but nothing special. I prefer my local spot but it s pretty good modern Asian cuisine. I like that each dish is inspired by different regions in China. Got the Dan Dan noodles and they were a bit spicy. The theming of the restaurant is very cute although finding it was a bit scary cause it s in the middle of an indoor alley with a cardboard sign on an unmarked door. Overall food was good but a bit pricey and salty but most Chinese places are regardless.
Loved the food, everything is perfect. Have went about 5x and it is alwaysss good. The hosts are amazing too.
Great vibe and atmosphere! The bartenders are super nice and helpful with the menu. Got the tasting menu and it was good but not amazing. The best thing was the dessert!! The toast was amazing. Id come back for drinks and dessert.
Sunnys is one of a kind and has quickly become a favourite for those looking for elevated, yet delicious Chinese food. With the majority of the menu set up for sharing, make sure to come with a large group so you can sample a variety of their dishes. The garlicky green beans and orange chicken are two of my favourites!
I had a wonderful time here. The food is delicious. I would recommend ordering rice on the side, it pairs well with the dishes here. The service is excellent as well. The hostess and servers were very friendly! I will be back!
It s cute but definitely just some mid overpriced Chinese food. You can get similar stuff down the street that costs less than half but won t be in a cute restaurant.
A hidden gem of Chinese cuisine! Wow, every dish we ordered was amazingly delicious! The service was excellent. The pricing was very reasonable! You will want to return with friends that do not know Kensington Market very well, as it is an experience of finding a hidden gem in the market.
I ve heard a lot about Sunny s, and after deciding to visit this place for dinner, we arrived on site, it was a little difficult to find since we don t go to Kensington often. Service was okay, food was also okay. I feel it was just over hyped restaurants. We had an okay experience might come back another time and hopefully have a better experience.
Great food. Cool atmosphere for Chinese food
Exceeded our expectations. Food, atmosphere, service, were all 10/10 and it has become an instant favourite for us. If nothing else, go for the vibes & the dessert
Finding the restaurant was a really fun experience and the ambiance & decor was beautiful. Great place to hang for a small group of friends. The food was very average, we got the beef jerky, orange chicken, hot and sour potatoes, needle noodles, and hk french toast. The portions are on the smaller side, and would recommend to order a couple to share.
Great atmosphere for a Chinese restaurant. You don t have to shout over ea ch other. The ambiance was on point for an intimate get together. Food was decently priced. Service was superb. I would skip the alcohol as it can get expensive quick but if you go and just have food, fairly priced for the food/space.
Cute, intimate and vibey. Great food and service
Nestled inside the Exile building and down the hall from the OG Cold Tea bar is Sunny s Chinese. This gem features soft pink and hunter green walls enticing you to taste local dishes from different cities. Each one with its own character and story. Def a blast for dates, or a night with your girls.
Such a cute restaurant! Cozy and classy. The Chinese food was delicious. Speakeasy style vibes in Kensington Market.
One of the best modern Chinese restaurants in Toronto. Well deserve Michelin star
This place was delish. It s very random to find down a little hallway but the girl that was working at the front door was amazing and so helpful. The food was all good, a bit pricey for what you get but it was worth the trip. Not sure I d go back, but it was definitely a good meal to try Food : 4/5
The French toast reminds me of the happiness I can get from eating
PSA: Jiuniang (fermented rice) contains alcohol. Fermented rice is a byproduct of rice wine making. It is the flavour of the current daily soft serve in their chef s menu. They served it to me when I told them that I am pregnant and cannot have alcohol. When I asked the server what was the flavour of the soft serve, I didn t understand what she said - fair enough because the word is a bit hard to pronounce. After almost finishing the soft serve, I recognized the taste of Jiuniang, and immediately regretted not seeking clarification earlier. Please educate your staff of what really goes into the ingredients of your dishes!
Delicious food and fun location! Has great 70s/ diner decor and a good atmosphere. Dining is family style, I would highly recommend the orange chicken and Dan Dan noodles. Only qualm is that the server suggested we didnt order enough dishes for 4 people (ordered 6 and she insisted 8+) and 6 was more than enough.
We were so excited to check this place out given its Michelin star. I would say the dishes were good, but nothing was outstanding that made it rise above some other Chinese spots in the city. If youre looking for good Chinese comfort food, there are a ton of other places that serve the same quality foods that dont require a strict reservation and for a much lower price point. We dont care about prices for food as long as the food warrants it. In this case, the service was outstanding but not sure the food stood up to the price point
The buzz is legit. One of the best Chinese food experiences Ive had in Toronto. And Im super critical on that specific cuisine due to lifetime experience. I love that they aint afraid of garlic, spices, herbs or crossing the streams of cultures. We did the Chefs Choice set meal which is a great sampling of a lot of the popular dishes, which is great for your first time. Each dish was done exceptionally well. Standouts for me were the Dan Dan Noodles, the Typhoon Shelter Squid, Roast Pork with Plum Sauce, the Gai Lan, and both the Blackbird Hong Kong French Toast and the daily Soft Serve ice cream that was apple and Indian spices when we went. The Husband and Wife Beef also gets a shout out. All in all, a fantastic experience. Definitely recommend going! Reserving two weeks ahead was us starting dinner at 930pm, so I recommend reserving earlier if possible. Also, dont worry about the murder hallway to get there. The figure at the end of the corridor has no ill intent.
10/10 experience the moment I walked through the door. The food was exceptional, service was attentive and the vibes were immaculate. Perfect date night spot and I appreciated the nod to Cold Tea.
If you are looking for authentic Chinese food this is not the place for you. If you are Chinese you will not like this place. Especially on the doorstep of Chinatown. Small portions, oily cooking, oversalted. The typhoon shelter squid is a great Hong Kong dish that if done right is crispy garlicky and spicy. What we got was doughy underseasoned panko. Silver Needle Noodle was on the menu as having black mushrooms but there were none in sight. Sunny s is the want to be hip version of white people shopping mall Chinese food, just pricier and benefitting from social media hype. Dear Michelin Guide - are there no Chinese restaurants in Toronto owned by Chinese chefs, that you could have recommended? If you don t think so, you need to seriously diversify your guide. Very disappointed. Save your money and go to the many wonderful authentic Chinese restaurants all over Toronto.
What a gem of a spot!!! Walking in is a journey... you might find the sign on the door but you may not believe that you have. Down the hall and through the door, the decor is old-school, no effort Chinese chic haha Honestly, so nostalgic. The food is outstanding! Very creative dishes for certain and having ordered the chefs choice was the greatest decision Ive made in a while. The eggplant was unreal and I dont usually like eggplant. The Dan Dan noodles, the calamari, the salads, the, the, the... Everything was phenomenal. I can t wait to eat here again. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Ample parking is nearby, though getting a table is not so easy. Youll certainly wait a couple of weeks, so make the call today and just go and eat here. Parking: Parking is close but paid Wheelchair accessibility: Certainly accessible
Super fun spot, perfect for a night out! The food and drinks are unreal too
tucked away in the heart of kensington market, sunnys delivers delicious food while providing attentive service. however, i thought it was overall too pricy for what you get. fine dining prices without the fine dining ambiance. everything was great but it was lacking the it factor. would come back again but not in a hurry. gunpowder: fun drink that combines beer, shot and cocktail. do it for the vibes, not the taste husband and wife beef: one of my fav dishes, must try. great texture layers and flavor. meat was well marinated. soft tofu: liked the youtiao but everything else was bland. skip. long beans: highly recommend. one of the better long bean dishes i ve ever tried. loved the flavor and cooked well. not too oily. lamb ribs: really enjoyed this. lamb perfectly tender and fell off the bone. strong cumin flavor. silver needle noodle: no frills well made noodle dish. wasn t a standout dish but still greatly enjoyed it. hk french toast: black sesame and condensed milk combo hit the spot. loved the crunchy toast. could become a little too rich towards the end. milo soft serve: good to pair with the french toast but way too expensive for what it is
Amazing service with a cozy interior. We really enjoyed our dinner here and would come back! Warning for those who can t handle spice very well: we noticed that the chili oil used in their dishes are spicier than normal so keep that in mind. We started off with the Typhoon Shelter Squid which was delicious - it was crispy and very flavourful. The Husband and Wife Beef is similar to the traditional Chinese FuqiFeiPian dish, which in my opinion, is not very special and can be skipped (if you ve never tried this before I would recommend it). Afterwards, we got the Dan Dan Noodles, Orange Chicken and Green Beans. The green beans were very ordinary. We were very impressed by the Orange Chicken as it was our first time trying the dish outside of fast food setting - it was very crispy and the sauce was more mild compared to your average orange chicken dish which we appreciated. The Dan Dan Noodles were also great but on the spicier side. We wrapped up our dinner with the iconic HK Toast which was layered with black sesame paste. It was delightful and we very much enjoyed it. Note: the location of the restaurant is difficult to find as it s inside a building and not directly accessible from outside.
So much fun. Get at least one gunpowder slap.
The French toast is everything it s made out to be! Everything else was also great but this was the standout for us.
Awful service.
I wouldnt recommend coming here if you are Chinese/of Chinese descent/have experience with Chinese food. Shame because I was really looking forward to finally checking out this place out - a literal hole in the wall. Everything here was overly salty with no subtleties or wok hei flavour as others have mentioned. Food was colder than expected and portions were tiny even for upscale Toronto dining standards. A far cry from what you can get for the fraction of the price in Markham/Richmond Hill. I do not understand how this of all places got recognized by Michelin - totally undeserved. Cabbage: 1/5 - quite boring and tiny pieces of lap yuk, they definitely should have used lap cheung instead for balanced sweetness Silver Needle Noodle: 2/5 - this was OK, but the portion size was the smallest of all for no reason. Literally felt like one serving compared to the orange chicken which was 3. The saltiest dish of the night and it felt like a first attempt of what I would make at home Orange Chicken: 1/5 - did not taste any orange, the same quality if not worse than food court chinese food Blackbird HK French Toast: 3/5 - I get what they are trying to do here, and the sesame was abundant, but it just wasnt satisfying as an HK french toast should be due to how thinly the bread was sliced Drinks were trying way too hard to be different and ethnic. Overly spiced with cumin and soy, to the point it felt like you were drinking some kind of meat sauce marinade. The iced tea one was particularly hard to drink (possibly the worst cocktail Ive had in my life) and I had to send it back. On the positive side: the service as great, and the whole entrance has a very speakeasy vibe. Overall thoughts can be summarized by saying: this is just elevated Panda Express / Shanghai 360. If I got served this in a styrofoam takeout box without knowing where it came from, I would not bat an eye.
A little hard to find, but once you figure it out and get in there, it has a great atmosphere. Really cozy, good energy and soft lighting. Really hit it out of the park there. Service was outstanding, very attentive and professional servers. Paid attention to the small details. Food... okay so maybe it was an off night? It is a 3/5 for me: Their tofu appetizer was excellent, as was their eggplant appetizer. Probably the best tofu appetizer I have ever had, a perfect and complete dish. Everything else fell short. The twice cooked pork had very little pork and the little amount it had, was overly salted. The hangar steak was nothing extraordinary, the cook was spot on medium rare, but the dish lacked a cohesiveness between the protein and veggies. Also unless I misinterpreted the menu, it was cooked over charcoal but literally zero of that charcoal flavor came through, besides a little bitterness. The orange chicken was oversalted... again. This is coming from someone that loves salt, so no fear of me being overly sensitive. Normally this would be bordering a 2/5 for me from a food perspective, mainly because any restaurant that is missing the mark in terms of basic seasoning, should be concerning. Perhaps the food wasnt tasted prior to service or it was overlooked accidentally. I would recommend for people to go there, it was overall a great experience. A great date night or romantic dinner spot, but not a place I would go to twice (might order the tofu for takeout though).
Then though they have a star now but they still maintain a very approachable atmosphere and price point. The plates are reminiscent of all the classic Hong Kong flavors but in more unique combinations. If the choices are R&D and Sunnys, pick Sunnys.
it was ok. the atmosphere is cool but the food is mediocre. definitely still palatable but it just makes me lose faith in the Michelin guide
Overall, this is a nice spot to hang out with good dessert, but I would not recommend it for the food (not authentic, way too salty), especially not to other Chinese people. Highlights: - Nice ambiance - Excellent service - Dessert is really great, loved their take on HK French toast and soft serve. Lowlights: - Seasoning on most of the food was completely off. Almost every dish was too salty. - Noodles were served with chopsticks sticking in the food/bowl. In Chinese culture, this is disrespectful or even offensive. Please be less ignorant of the culture you are borrowing from.
Everything we ordered had great flavour. So well-balanced and impactful. I was honestly shocked by the flavour of the beef jerky, it tasted so authentic! I never had anything like that in Canada where I was immediately taken back home by the flavour. Really great job with the food. The desserts were unfortunately underwhelming. The toast was too oily and the soft serve was kind of tasteless. Mixed together made them better but one their own they were probably 3 out of 5.
