We will be Re-opening on Monday March 6! Take-out, Delivery through Uber Eats
We wanted dim sum and decided to go here. We are visiting from the states for the weekend. First impression when we walked in, wow it’s busy! Food must be good! It’s always a plus when we see restaurants filled with Asians. We waited for a bit and sat down. We waited 15-20 minutes before a server finally came over to take our order. We ordered hot and sour soup. The waiter said our hot and sour soup is sweet. Ummm so it’s hot and sweet soup? We should have just stuck to congee. But no we continued to order the soup anyways. It was sweet like he said and we only took a few bites. Definitely do not recommend it. Only if you like your soup sweet. The dim sum we ordered was good! Shrimp dumplings, chicken feet and shrimp rice rolls. There are so many choices of dim sum in Chinatown and we won’t be returning back here in the future.
If you’re looking for large shrimp and large portion dim sum all day, this is your place. Super nice they provide tea on the house and all service was very nice. Unfortunately, not enough space for traditional rolling carts. Know in advance they only accept cash or Visa. Finding parking can be tricky.
This restaurant is an absolute gem for authentic Chinese cuisine! The menu offers a wide variety of dishes; Whether you’re craving dim sum, sizzling plates, or hearty soups, they have it all. The service here is exceptional—servers are always attentive, making sure your water glass is never empty and checking in regularly without being intrusive. They truly go above and beyond to accommodate every need, making you feel valued. Another bonus is that this place stays open later than most other restaurants in the area, making it a perfect spot for late-night cravings. I only gave a 4/5 rating because, on my last visit, the food wasn’t quite as good as it usually is. However, this could be due to various factors, such as a possible chef change or an off day. Regardless, it’s still a fantastic spot with great service, so I will be returning again!
When I first came to Toronto 6 years ago, a friend took me here for dinner and I've been a big fan since. I love love love the food, it's always hot (this is a crucial factor for me) and delicious, the staff is very welcoming and helpful, and the atmosphere is homey. I've tried other restaurants but none beats this one - this is my absolute favorite <3
I've had dim sum from Rol San many times over the last few years. The dim sum is yummy and tastes fresh. The prices are average. Customer service could be better; the waiters are pretty curt and rude. I recommend ordering take out rather than dining in.
We waited 15 mins for a table. The front of the house comes in and out several times to do a headcount but takes ages to get a table. The tables are prepped in an Indian wedding way. They've got sheets of plastic on the table pre-laid. When you're done they pull the sheet down with the remains and the next person sits. The seats are not cleaned if food is spilled. The focus is not on service but on bringing in the maximum number of people. Food is on the expensive side and not value. They slyly drop a kettle of tea which you may think is free but it's $1.50. The dumpling portions are small 4/5 compared to other places. The beef with rice in chef's sauce and the same on Sizzler pricing is insane. Sizzler is $15 more than the same dish on a plate. Not enough napkins, no one tops up water unless asked, the person doesn't come to the table with the machine to pay so you sit there for a while until you walk to the cashier to pay despite paying a service charge automatically. There is a 15% service charge which is nowhere on the menu, entrance or when the order is taken. Overall the restaurant would pull a quick one on you.
Overrated. This dim sum restaurant is definitely catering to a certain clientele. Items are overpriced for a dim sum place, and selection is pretty limited. Value for money isn't there for me. The food was decent. The eggplant and minced pork noodles was the best dish we had (it was delicious), but the dim sum was either on par or worse than most other dim sum places. The rice noodle rolls were good, but the har gow was small and spare ribs too salty. Unlike most the mandatory 15% service charge and $1.50 per person tea charge didn't bother me. They should make it clear at the start for transparency, but 15% isn't really that much compared to the rest of downtown, and tea charge or "sitting fee" is very common for dim sum. Also, while they charged the 15%, they handed the machine with no option to tip more so they aren't trying to trick people. My issue is that our service experience was actually bad. We had to flag people down for everything, from asking for tea refills to asking them to take empty plates away from our small table. Can't charge a mandatory service charge and give sub par service!
Food: 5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Ambience: 5 Stars Value: 5 Stars Overall: 5 Stars Rol San has been one of my favourite dim sum spots in the city for as long as I can remember. I’ve been coming here since I was a baby, and my family has known the owner for such a long time. This long-standing relationship has led to the staff members knowing us by name, always providing an optimal experience with a personal touch. The dim sum at Rol San is always flavourful and delicious. My absolute favourite is the deep-fried squid tentacles paired with their unbeatable in-house hot sauce. Every bite is a delightful burst of flavour that keeps me coming back. The quality of the food here is consistently top-notch, and you can tell that the chefs put a lot of care into each dish. Since Rol San moved to their new location, I’ve noticed a few changes. The dim sum menu has gotten smaller, which was a bit disappointing at first since I loved the variety they used to offer. However, the quality remains excellent, and I’m hopeful that they will expand the menu again in the future. The new location has a modern feel, but I do miss the charm of the old place. Love the new expansions, fixed the seating issues and brought back a lot of the menu items we missed in the past. The combination of fantastic food, familiar faces, and a welcoming atmosphere keeps me coming back time and time again. The staff's attention to detail and the personalized service we receive make every visit special. If you’re looking for a great dim sum experience with consistently delicious food, Rol San is definitely worth a visit. xx kellychan360
The best dim sum Ive had in a long time! Consistently. Owners are wonderful and friendly. Worth the trip!
Food is amazing, dim sum is top notch! Open late, truly one of the best Chinese restaurant.
Great food. Very pricey. Totally new place, noting like the old Rol San. Food
Late night restaurant. Have some stores of this place late at night. Love the food
Great food at very reasonable price if shared amongst multiple people. Dimsums are a must try
Food is mediocre compared to other dim sum restaurants in Toronto downtown. Servers are impatient and not accessible. 15% tip is already added to the bill without prior consent for a table of two.
Tip included without telling
Food and vibe great as always. Service seems to be slipping.
Delicious to the MAX .
This restaurants bill already includes a 15% tip. You do not need to leave an additional tip. We saw reviews mentioning billing errors at this restaurant and decided to double-check our own bill. When we calculated the total for the items we ordered, it didn t match the final amount. They handed us a payment terminal where the total already included a 15% tip, but we still added an extra tip during the payment process. When we asked about it, they claimed the notice was displayed before payment, but we couldn t find it anywhere. If your total seems higher than expected, check if the bill already includes a tip before adding one yourself.
Everything fresh, freshly prepared! Exquisite, unpretentious! The staff is fast and diligent! The fried balls stuffed with black sesame are from another world!
Average Chinese restaurants service and atomsphere but food is above average! I especially enjoyed the all day dim sum so we got dim sum at midnight! Food
They changed the location but it is much more luxurious w better washrooms. They jacked up the prices but still delicious!! It will be around $7.88 for dim sum but larger portions. Keep in mind that they charge you for tea without asking for $1.50 per person and service fee for 15% included and no need to pay extra tips :)
Genuinely worth the hype. It was authentic Cantonese food and dim sum. Everything was flavorful and fresh. The service was quick and super polite and it was a clean and humble environment. Also it s open till super late! Highly recommend!!
One of by go to places. Always go back!
Food was average. Staff pleasant. Not the same vibe as when Rol San was on the east side of Spadina.
Had a late night meal here with friends. Great service, good food.
Good faithful! You know youre gonna wait to be seated (especially large groups) but you know food is gonna be good. Love thier chili oil and overall solid.
Very authentic and great dim sum options, super tasty, fresh, and hot, and it s cheaper than even a lot of options in markham
I often visit this restaurant, but I experienced the worst service. The yellow-haired male server on duty during the day today kept ignoring us and didn t answer. Also, He put water on the table like throwing and the water poured on the table, but he didn t even apologize. I like the food in this restaurant, but he ll have to fix his attitude.
AAA-rated- The Best Chinese food on spadina.everything on the menu and dim sum superb. Quality and taste . Price reasonable, not cheap but it doesn t matter.Staff amazing . I have been coming here since late in the early 90 s and you will keep coming back for more.
Watch out for this double tipping! Great meal overall but the end really just soured the experience. :(
man i didn t even get my food yet but these guys are the nicest guys ive ever met idk there names but there s a guy in a shirt in an apron and a lady bery nice
Moved the store to a smaller place The line at the door is so long you cant even get in on a rainy day The whole eating space is especially unreasonable The tables are full to the point of being crowded. Tipping is also unreasonable and most importantly the food taste is so average its a level I can cook at home ...... after breakfast tea Id rather rush from dt to the north side to eat Translated with DeepL.com (free version) I moved the store to a smaller place. The queue at the door is so long that I cant even get in on a rainy day. The entire dining space is very unreasonable and the tables are so full that its crowded. The tip is unreasonable and the most important thing is that the food tastes so average. I can make it at home... I would rather go north from DT to eat morning tea in the future
Always the best Chinese food when your downtown Toronto
Consistent good food for decent prices
Simply the best dim sum in Toronto. Parking: Located on Spadina Food : 5/5 |
I went twice, but the food condition and service were both different. The tip is already included, so you dont need to give it separately. Credit cards are not accepted.
The food was ok but the service was absolutely terrible. We had been waiting for the bill around 15 minutes but they were still pretending to be busy at something else
Classic dim sum spot. Perfect after a night out. Tripe w ginger is surprisingly good complement to typical siu mai, dumplings, etc
My wife cannot stop dragging me here she loves this place especially their chilli oil, we have got so much at home it never runs out by the time we make another visit here!
Worth restaurant I have ever gone.Bad staff.. Not recommended Food : 1/5
Brings out tea that we never asked for. Didnt have it? Too bad. We got charged over $10 for just tea. Worst dim sum in Toronto. The place is also very dirty..
This restaurant is always a winning choice! I keep coming back because they offer a fantastic variety of Chinese dishes and dim sum. Plus, theyre open late, making it the perfect spot to satisfy those late-night cravings or grab some dim sum after a night out.
This is my second time visiting Rol San. The first time was before COVID, and now were back to try their new location. The taste is still as good as before. Our favourites are the har gow, tentacles, and siomai. Although the sizes of the dim sum are a bit small compared to other dim sum places like in Markham, we may just prefer the bigger portions. Overall, we loved the taste.
It was unbelievably delicious. I don t know if it was because the tip was included, so the waiters were very picky, especially a girl with a round face. When I paid cash, there was a discount and she asked me to pay 60 yuan, and then I gave her a 100 yuan note to pay back. I was given a bunch of coins, so I went to the front desk and asked, Who are you disgusting by throwing the money over without saying anything?
The dim sum is really delicious!!!!!! The fried rice was so large that the two of us couldnt eat it all, so we took it to go. Dim sum is really delicious Fortune cookie so cute
Food is decent but portions are small relative to price. Take out service was horrible and rude - staff overpromises quick take out upon order, but we waited nearly an hour for food.
Food was great. It arrived quickly, and the dim sum portion was decent. The atmosphere was clean and nice. Our server was ok. My only complaint was the 15% tip, which was added automatically.
Too bad, only foreigners go there to eat, and only Indian guys deliver it
They didn t tell me the tip is included on bill and intends me to pay double tipping. Question is if you include tip on bill why would you still have tip option on card machine? Really sad that I lost one of my favourite dim sum place. DO NOT COME AND EAT HERE
No wonder this is Drakes favorite restaurant
Food was fantastic, service was great, and the price was good. Came out to $30 per person for 9 people and we were stuffed. Would 100% come here again
I went there with concerns because the reviews on the service were so poor, but the person was more friendly than I expected, especially the man. The taste of the food was so delicious. Especially the fried shrimp dim sum was so delicious that I ordered it twice. The price is cheap compared to Canadian prices and I am 100% willing to visit again. Parking: Park in a nearby public parking lot. If you park, you can park for CAD$15 from 9:00 to 18:00. It is close to the public parking lot.
We ordered all food items together when we were seated. 15 minutes after we were done eating, we said our spring rolls have not come, so we don t want them anymore. Another 10 minutes later we ask for the bill and he says your spring rolls are coming and we said we don t want them, then he said they re in the fryer, and then we reiterated that we still do not want them as our stomachs have settled. He walked away, and showed up with the spring rolls another 5-10 minutes later. They said we had to pay for them since they were already in the fryer. This is toxic service. It was their mistake to forget about them, and malicious to make us still pay for them when they came over an hour after ordering them, especially after saying we don t want them anymore twice. It doesn t take 35 minutes to fry spring rolls, so you cannot say it s was already in the fryer 35 minutes later when they come to our table piping hot. Absolute foolishness! Never coming here again and they include a pre tip and then expect more tip after that. Greedy little buggers you are.
I ve been coming here for years and it never disappoints. they went through some renovations recently which look incredible now that it is complete - atmosphere is very clean, aesthetic , gorgeous food is amazing. so many dishes that I would recommend so i d say just to be adventurous and try things
Absolutely not recommended. This place is over-hyped. Food is on the expensive side and not value. There is a 15% service charge which is nowhere on the menu, entrance or when the order is taken. We had a General Tso chicken which was mentioned to be spicy, and ended up being sweet chunks of chicken (felt like ketchup sauce) and szechuan rice which was dry. We only liked some dim sums but the mains were disappointing as it was just a sweet sauce. Worst experience ever. Will never come again!
Totally disappointing. We tried Rol San for the first time. It was a really disappointing experience. We also came across some bad practices which were realized later. Firstly, we sat down and just few seconds later a Tea pot was put on the table which we didnt even ask for. We thought it is complementary, only to find out it was charged later. Coming to food, Dim sums were good. I wish we hadnt ordered mains. They really need to check their taste buds. If you have mentioned something spicy on the menu then please dont serve it sweet. I ordered Tso Chicken as I thought it would be different and spicy or have some hint of spiciness. It was just a big chunk of fried chicken served in a sweet sauce. It tasted like a mix of ketchup and vinegar. Also ordered a rice which had a dry sauteed chicken on top and again sweetish. Another bad practice is they add 15% service charge, not mentioned anywhere. And then again prompts a tip option on the machine. Its a basic service. We paid a premium price of $99 for 2 people which was totally over priced.
From the perspective of someone who has tried many Dim Sum and Cantonese restaurants, automatically charging the tea fee feels quite authentic. Some classic Dim Sum dishes are good. Stir-fried rice noodles with beef is delicious. However, this rice with pork ribs in hotpot is kinda ridiculous. First crime, not in a clay pot. Second crime, thicken the sauce with cornstarch.
10/10 everytime, this food never seems to disappoint me. It has gone up in price since I first starting coming here years ago but still my go to place for dimsum, day or night!! I miss the old hole-in-the-wall location where it still felt homey. The dinning place now looks much fancier
Food is good! But no longer considered cheap eats, as each dim sum is more than 6$+ and depending on which they are either 3pcs or 4pcs. Service is good, and keep in mind that an automatic 15% tip is applied as well as 1.50$ for tea.
Overrated... The restaurant itself is nice and clean, and the dim sum foods were decent, but the service wasnt great nor the surprise charges on the bill (i.e., charging 15% tip regardless of the group size, bringing tea upon arrival and then charging for it per person). They are pricier than some of the other dim sum places Ive been to in Toronto, and not the best. It seems clear to me that they were aiming for the tourists who are unfamiliar with Canadian customs.. Upon seated, the server brought out tea without even asking whether we wanted it or not, but then later I found out from the dim sum order form that they charge $1.50/person for tea. What a scam and how unpleasant to find out that you are served tea and they charge you for it. One of the servers was rude and unpleasant as well. When we asked for an extra spoon for the wonton soup (they brought out only one spoon for the table of two. Why??), the server brought two large serving spoons to the table and didnt even apologize that she brought the wrong ones. And shed loudly place the plates and cups. Hopefully she was just having a bad day. Upon payment, the server informed me that the 15% gratuity was already added to my bill (for the party of two people?) and that they only accepted Visa, debit or cash... Wtf. Thankfully I had cash but no visa nor debit. That shouldve been clearly noted at the entrance. Anyways, overall, I wont be going back to this place again even though it was newly renovated. Left a bad taste in my mouth after such experience. Also, why no change table in the bathroom when theres space??
Came to try the curry chicken to compare to another local Chinese restaurants curry chicken. Surprisingly, this was Thai style, very plain, just red curry paste and coconut milk. Disappointing for sure.
Very good Chinese food especially a go to place after hours. Opens late.
Complete menu with great taste
while the food was decent, the service made whole brunch experience quite unpleasant.
Lettuce in stale chicken fried rice . Chicken with vegetables equals 90% fake vegetables like celery, bean sprouts and a ridiculous amount of the white daikon radish bs. Just call the dish vegetables with a hint of chicken
The food is overrated, and they also automatically charge a 15% tip for the poor service they offer. Will not be going back.
ShrimpSquid & scallop 28.95$ contains only shrimp, dont waste your money. Be aware that tea and tips fees are included in the bill.
Just felt like we were an inconvenience the entire time we were there. My wife and I placed an order for spring roll appetizer, waiter said okay and walked off with no other comments. We were served one roll for the table. Okay no big thing just order one more. We placed our dinner order for General Tso s chicken for two and an order of fried rice for two. They brought the chicken, which was good not great but we had to ask about the rice. A different waitress returned to question us about what rice we ordered. Simple fried rice to split with the chicken. I don t feel like we were ever disrespectful in asking about our order. We weren t in a hurry so there wasn t a rush but after that no one returned to our table. We finally asked for the check and a box. The check was brought over at which time we were informed of the pre-added 15% gratuity. Didn t know that would be added when we ordered but appreciated being told before paying the bill. We waited for the box before asking again. Upon asking for the box, we were asked if we d paid our check. We shared that we had. She kindly brought the box and asked again if we d paid the check. I again responded yes and showed her the receipt. She took the receipt and without saying a word balled up the receipt and walked away. So ends our experience with a disappointed ending.
A very, very bad experience. Five people ordered seven or eight dishes, and within five minutes of sitting down, all the dishes were served... It turned out that all the dishes were cooked and prepared in advance, and they were washed with water. It was served. None of the seafood and vegetables were warmed. The Chinese-style beef fillet was too old to bite, and the lobster had no taste at all. The Yangzhou fried rice clearly felt that the cold water added had not yet dried up. Each dish cost nearly 30 yuan. Yuan, Longsheng Inn is definitely a deceiving place! ! ! ! ! ! I sincerely hope that friends who like food can avoid this pit after reading this information! Horrible experience, nothing is good!!!!!!!
Its a little far away from the lively neighborhood of Torontos Chinatown, but closer to the business district of Kensington. Morning tea starts quite late, it only opens at 10 am. As the first customer of the day, I ordered shrimp dumplings, siomai and carrot cakes as soon as I walked in and took my seat. Someone on the Internet mentioned that the portions of the snacks served in this restaurants morning tea are too small. Personally, I think its okay and the portions are quite decent. Although the skin of the radish cake was not crispy enough, it tasted great and there was a lot of radish that was too big to be called shredded radish. The siomai is not small in size and the pork filling is plump and solid. The shrimp dumplings were a little too small, and the shrimp meat was pureed, making it a bit empty in the mouth. Three courses of tea, plus $1.50 for tea, the total after tax and service charge is $31.05. The price is a bit higher if you come alone to enjoy it, but it is more practical to have company to chat with and share food and bills while eating and drinking tea.
No taste of noodles very hard to eat an abused taste of vinegar they did not prepare from the heart it was a thing quickly done
The best dim sum in Toronto
Best in the city! Can t go wrong with anything on this menu but fried squid is a MUST!
Over priced, waited forever, not impressed.
Great food. Good atmosphere. Be aware that they don t necessarily accept Mastercard (& insisted we went to go and get cash to pay for the food instead of looking at alternatives such as a Visa)
Surprised that we were charged $1.50 each for service tea that was given without us requesting for it. I will not suggest the hot and sour soup, tasted more like sweet and sour soup. The salt and pepper squid was overcooked, tough as rubber. Dimsum was alright though. At the end, a 15% service charge was on the bill outright and there were only 3 of us.
A Toronto Classic! I remember going here a lot as a child before it switched its location and I loved its menu, my family will always order items such as har goi shrimp, shui mei, sticky rice and steamed pork buns. Its still delicious to this very day. I very much enjoy their mushroom and bamboo dumplings. It would even better if it had more vegetarian options. The service is friendly and cheerful. The restaurant does get very crowded (which is normal with it being a popular location), I dont recommend coming here if youre carrying anything big (shopping bags, backpacks) because of how crowded it can be. Highly recommend. Vegetarian options: I very much enjoy their mushroom and bamboo dumplings.
some of the best dim sum I ve ever eaten. I live in the area and have tried the different places in Chinatown and I travel to Hong Kong and China for work. So my palate is accustom to finding good places outside the motherland. If you are looking for value, this is not the place, and you will get what you pay for at other restaurants. It s like eating a steak at Kelsey s or eating a steak at the Keg. You pay a bit more and the food at Rol San is consistently good. I always feel satiated and happy after weekend brunch there. My boyfriend and I will run up a tab of $58 which includes tip and tea service. But that s about the bill to go out for brunch anywhere in Toronto. Service is the usual busy Chinese restaurant and all the wait staff are courteous when you flag them down. But you need to flag them down or you will sit there for a while until someone notices. Alternately, If you want to save and have great food, I d suggest take out from there. They do not charge the gratuity. No line ups or waiting for tables. And You can choose to tip or not. Kid-friendliness: It s a casual place, served family style and small dishes. Wheelchair accessibility: Big enough for wheelchair accessability
We ordered Siu mai, chicken and mushroom rice roll, sticky rice and pork spare rib with black bean sauce. It was really expensive for the quality and quantity and hence this 2 star review is based on that. We came to try it due to the number of people inside the restaurant but it was not that good.
I have tried dumplings all over Toronto, but nothing compares to the shrimp and pork dumplings at Rol San! Hands down, the best Ive ever had. The filling was so flavorful, juicy, and perfectly seasoned, wrapped in a delicate, soft skin that just melts in your mouth. If youre a dumpling lover, this place is an absolute must-visit. Cant wait to come back!
Not for me!
Love the food, but staff is nice only if you tip, even when you are doing a take out they expect you to tip them Vegetarian options: I tried vegetarian dumplings and veg fried rice
At 2:30am on a Friday night this place was pumping out dishes and every table was full. Food is great, service is amazing, always will go here when craving wonton soup and get a large only thing I ll say is it does add up sneaky fast.
I mean! The dishes are just wow! The old-fashioned style, quality of the food, fast preparation time, the tea, everything about this place was great! But this is not for everyone! I personally love the place! Food
Love this spot. Snowpea tips slap. Short ribs slay. The sesame dessert goes hard. Toronto essential.
Pricy here. Bland foods.
Absolutely not recommended. Avoid at ALL costs. One of the dishes we ordered was forgotten and NEVER brought to the table. The waiter seemed very ARROGANT and RUDE. They don t care their customers as they forced tips (see below) They forced a 15% tips that they don t deserve at all. There was no indication beforehand. Worst experience ever. Will never come again
Best dim sum in town hands down
The dim sum selection was so good! Definitely stop by if you re looking for some good quality, authentic Chinese food!
This restaurant is awful. 15% tip added automatically, so beware. Food quality mostly tastes like heated up frozen food with a little char. Food
I called in to place an order for takeout, and it still wasnt ready yet. I was told it would be done in a couple of minutes. I was asked to be seated in the front lobby area, as they didnt want me to wait by the checkout. They ended up forgetting about my order, and my food sat out there for the entire time!! I had to check in with one of the waitresses to see if my order was ready. They wasted 15 minutes of my time, and the food was cold! I do not recommend this restaurant. Extremely poor customer service, and the staff are lazy. They did not even apologize or make any acknowledgment of the issue. Also, the food quality is just terrible! The BBQ pork bun tasted off and was very fishy, and the dimsum was undercooked and with more filler than meat. They also changed their hot sauce. Overall, there is too much msg and salt. It will leave you feeling very thirsty.
The food was good, and I would go back for it. But what I did not like was that we were not told about the extra charges for the tea served (that we did not ask for), and the 15% forced tip. I should have checked the reviews before going here.
Order via Uber but often direct - food is great but they always forget Sulis spice and hot sauce so the food might as well be average. For the money it costs it is ridiculous not to add something that is so important to the enjoyment of the food
Mandatory tipping is disgusting and no service
A fun dim sum spot to bring out-of-town guests. The menu is extensive and the service is impressively efficient! A great China town experience
This place is a shadow of its former incarnation down the road. Dim sum menu has about 40 items on it with a good 10-20% blacked out. There are no alcoholic drinks. There is only water, tea, Coke or Diet Coke in a can. Three of us ordered from the menu, ate, and they automatically added a 15% tip with no notice. I actually have no problem with this if its stated in the menu or on a sign, but nope. They also dont take MasterCard. Now, the food is excellent. No complaints there. If youre getting take-out or delivery go for it. Dining in however? Pass.
I have been a customer since 2002. Im never going back. They were so busy and obviously short staffed. The dishes arrived super slow. The turnip cakes arrived super late (I think they forgot about us and had them on the side for a long time) and was all cooled off. Since the dishes were slow, we kept drinking tea and the teapot was empty. It was very difficult to find waiter to get it filled up. Service was poor and guess what, 15% tip was automatically added. Im super disappointed with this experience.
This place serve the best tasting food
The food is fantastic. Ive loved them for over 30 years. Unfortunately I was sick all night when my Singapore Noodles no shrimp had shrimp in it. They need to step up their allergy responsibilities.
Waiter got annoyed at me for not tipping high enough... Left a very rude impression and will not be back.
The service is hit-and-miss; Some servers are pleasant and some, quite unpleasant. (So the mandatory tip of 15% pinches.) The wait for dimsum was excruciating. The taste however was delicious, especially with the chili oil. Food
I ve been coming here for years and I actually like this place however, the last time I went, I believe it will be my last. I m getting kind of exhausted dealing with waiters who are charging you for things that is not their right to do so they put complementary tea on your table before you have even asked for anything and then they go ahead and try to charge you on the receipt for it Last time we were only two people and they charge gratuity on our receipt without even letting us know. I have noticed that a lot of Chinese restaurants they are now charging top price for bottom of the barrel foods we used to go to these restaurants to eat a good meal for a cheap price because all you re getting is the cheapest food out there, but now not only are they overcharging on their meals, but they are forcing a tip and they are charging you for items you never asked For , this is not cool at all go to restaurant and pay the exact amount of food and have a classy dinner with a classy atmosphere
Good, but won t come back. Wouldn t have been a problem if what we had to end up paying was transparent from the start. I get it, it s a cheap dim sum place thats open late and with being sightly better than the next best open option at 1am, maybe they should get a bit of leniency. 2 things: 1, t s horrible to feel you re being duped into paying for the tea that s set up to be complimentary. Already ready on the table before we came and all, plus since it would ve still just been 1 teapot for 1 person or 2 or 3 (assuming no refills) how does it make sense to charge per person? Cost is negligible at 1.5$ per person btw, but why have it set up to cause undue annoyance for the customer. 2, aside from the fact that tips are given based on the level of service and that i usually tip based on the suggested amount anyway, one would reasonably only expect mandatory gratuity on big parties in Canada. So although the 15% tip that was automatically added onto the bill is a reasonable amount, i still felt blind-sighted into paying it. Maybe this is the norm for restaurants in chinatown and maybe I ve only been to ones that don t have mandatory surcharges, but i stand to be corrected. It s a shame because food was good, service was quite good our glasses of water were never empty and they were attentive and all around positive. Atmosphere was nice and bright. Everything pointed to a 4 star review and maybe its unfair to bring it down to a 2 just for my emotions towards the undisclosed mandatory charges, but unfortunately the quality of the restaurant does get overshadowed by its deceptive practices. It s a shame because they just lost another customer.
This restaurant is the best one in town for dumplings, noodles and Fried rice! Hands down! Their menu is awesome and the service is really really good. I highly recommend!
Great food and service as usual.
My partner and I eat a fair bit of dim sum and I have to say the low reviews of this space have me a little shocked. We finally got down to the new location on a holiday Monday and frankly we expected bad things given the nature of the so many poor reviews. We can confidently say that the reviews are not accurate. The food was extremely well portioned, very fresh and tasty. It s probably under priced for how much of each item and the quality. The service was speedy and efficient. The decor updated and clean. The staff quite friendly and helpful. What seems to be the issue is people saying the tea isn t free - it hasn t been at most dim sum spots for years and they also tell you it s not free, it s clearly stated on the menu. The second major complaint was the automatic added tip. We understand why they did this. There is a lot of people working here and dim sum is fairly cheap. They do this to ensure that it s fair because all the staff are serving everyone all the time we had food on our table less than 13 minutes after we sat down. They serve food hot and fresh and bodies need to deliver that food. This is a sit down service restaurant with fast service, the tip is warranted. If you don t want to tip, get takeout. Overall this reviews are ridiculous and you should come here. It s the best dim sum we have had in a long time. They offer an extensive take out menu and Uber eats menu. The food was the best dim sum in the area and five items were more than enough for two people.
Weve been going to Roll San for over 28 years since it first opened. I am glad it has stayed open in its new location and my cousins and I from the States had dinner there in April and the food was amazing. Everything was delicious. The relatives were very impressed. Going again soon with old friends from L.A. who we used to go to the old location for Dim Sum with. Highly recommended, Ive been eating Chinese food in Chinatown since I was five years old.
We went to the new location which was just across the street for a block. Havent been here for awhile but we always love to dine here. Service is fast and quick. Never disappoint us.
Expensive. Service is not good anymore. Charge 15 % tip automatically and it is not worth it. Dont even mention about automatic tip charges. BE CAREFUL. At least, old location service was good and staff friendly. Many of the servers Dont even acknowledge you and dont seem to care at all. Like we are bothering them. Use to go regularly but NO more.
The food is tasty It would be better if they paid a bit more attention to the service Food
Went on a Saturday morning around 11:30am, only waited 5 minutes to get seated. Always good and fresh Dim Sum, and wide variety of other other Chinese foods like fried rice, noodles, stir fries, etc... been going here for over 10 years, would go back!
I really enjoyed the dim sum and food here today. I havent been back for years so this is the first time I dined at the new location. It was very busy for a Tuesday lunch but the food was very good, not too salty. The stir fried beef rice noodle was the star of the show, the wok-hei was something I cant find in a lot of restaurants now and the amount of meat and veggies is absolutely amazing. I would definitely be back. Yes - they have an automatic tip but the servers work hard as they are servicing 8-10 tables at a time and clean up after us, I think its justified and also takes the pressure off of how much to tip.
15% service charge bothered me, and they didnt tell us beforehand either. Management comes off as dishonest. Compared to other places, we sit in a very cramped table and the food (dim sum) is very overrated and overpriced. Food
Portion was small, food was so-so and did not taste fresh, waited long time for service, would not recommend
A spot that has long roots and many fans, its not the classical dim sum option with roving carts. Likely due to space inside the restaurant but that is not bad because all dishes come freshly made. We grabbed a few dishes and drank our way through a good amount of tea. They do a great rendering of many of the classic selections and I must say their version of my favorite dumpling was the best Ive had. That would be their Hom Sui Gok, glutinous rice dumplings. The key is a nice crispy crust and soft/warm internals. Having it fresh and excellently made was wonderful. I will say pricing is higher than many will consider for dim sum, but the place was full so something is going right.
This place had some of the most delicious food during our trip to Toronto. Good enough portions for the price so you got to try a lot of different foods. The bbq buns were my personal favorite, along with the fried squid and custard buns. They do charge an automatic 15% tip however that wasnt an issue for us as the service was great. Will definitely be back!
Whose spicy soup you have? Put ketchup in it? What is the chef thinking? It smells like ketchup. The tomatoes are mixed with scrambled eggs, right?
Probably the most pleasant dimsum place Ive ever been to.
love their shrimp dumpling and egg plant dish. its just so good.
Waiter was too busy talking, not paying attention to customers waiting to order. Deserve -10 stars!
15% tip is automatically included to your bill. Service is bad with sour faces. So so food (I am chinese sea, my name is deceiving), reviews that saying this is the best food they tried definitely never tried good asian restaurants before. Try to Go somewhere else
Yumm! Brought my sister here for the first time (she doesn t live here) and she loved it too. We ordered 2 dishes and both were freshly made. Nice atmosphere and service was great. It was a hot day and our water glasses were always filled.
Let me preface this by saying the food is not the issue. Siu Mai and spare pork ribs with black bean sauce were good but the pan-fried bean curd rolls were just odd. Service was basically nonexistent. A waitress came up right after we were seated, asked if we wanted tea, gave us tea, and that was the last we saw of her. Afterwards, no one ever came to our table or looked in our direction. I had to physically walk up and find a waitress to place in our order. Also, a 15% tip is automatically included in the bill. For the disappointing service and charging us extra, that forced tip was not deserved. We had seen other people complaining about this place cheating customers from their money, so we double checked our bill when it came. Surprise, they charged the siu mai an extra dollar more than it was priced on their menu. We brought this to their attention, they apologized and said the menus are old and they would go fix it, and then came back and told us they dont have time to fix it. The waitress said if we came back next week the menu would be updated with new items. Not that I would ever come back to this place again after what we experienced.
Excellent food. Fresh, tasty and nice presentation. The staff was attentive and pleasant. The owner came to our table to ask about our experience. Food
The place is good for dimsums, pork buns and beef ribs. General T Sos chicken was decent pretty average tasting. Had the Cantonese fried noodles which was a very weird and mediocre tasting. Overall a one time visit place just for the dimsums , pork buns and the beef ribs
The service here is terrible. I havent finished the meal yet. The waiter asked me if I would take the wrapped food home or if you would continue eating because he had customers coming into the shop and he didnt have a table for new customers to sit. He tried to kick me out of that table even though I wasnt sitting for less than 20 minutes. The food was still not finished. And whats more, in the bill, the store charges a 15% service fee, I think its not fair at all. Even though the service is very bad. The taste of the food is not delicious at all.
This restaurant has a long history and serves very traditional Cantonese dim sum and Cantonese cuisine. Compared to some more modern dim sum eateries, their variety may be less, but the flavors are closer to the traditional tastes of dim sum and Cantonese dishes, making it suitable for those who want to experience authentic tastes. Additionally, the ambiance and service are very much in the Chinese style, making diners feel as though they have stepped back into old Guangdong.
This is what you come to toronto for
Good food ... Reasonably priced
Best food I ve had in a while. Very authentic. Delicious. Bonus points for being open till 3am
Great place for dim sum in Chinatown. A bit on the expensive I thought but the good was great!
Pretty good spot for dim sum.
Food was good, and we enjoyed the dim sum lunch. Very unimpressed with a 15% gratuity being automatically added (three were only 2 of us). Besides being illegal as it was not indicated anywhere on the menu or table, I will NEVER go back. Tipping culture is out of control in Toronto, and this is an example of a terrible practice that will end up with them losing customers.
Rol San Restaurant is a staple in the heart of Toronto s Chinatown, renowned for its authentic and delicious dim sum. From the moment you step inside, the bustling atmosphere and the tantalizing aromas set the stage for a memorable dining experience. The menu is extensive, offering a wide variety of dim sum classics such as har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai (pork dumplings), and BBQ pork buns. Each dish is prepared with precision and care, ensuring that every bite is packed with flavor. The freshness of the ingredients is evident, making every dish a standout. One of the highlights of Rol San is its efficient and friendly service. Despite the restaurant often being crowded, the staff manages to keep the orders flowing smoothly, ensuring that customers do not have to wait long for their food. The traditional pushcart service adds to the authentic experience, allowing diners to select dishes as they are freshly prepared and brought around the dining area. The ambiance of Rol San is lively and vibrant, reflecting the cultural richness of its cuisine. The décor is simple yet charming, providing a comfortable setting for both small gatherings and larger groups.
Attitude is rude, food sucks
Perhaps one of the worst dining experiences of my life. Food was inedible and overpriced.
I use to go to this Restaurant for years until they moved across the street so I thought I would start going again. Its nothing like the old Restaurant. The price has gone up significantly. In fact it seems to have doubled. The service was not that great. Took long for food to come then 2 dishes I had ordered did not show up but it showed up on my bill. You have lost a a few old customers today Rol San.
A well known old Chinatown Dim Sum restaurant that was crowded even on a Monday during lunchtime.
I Always come here for dim sum. This place is great if you are looking for a casual yummy experience and they are open until 3 am. Nothing fancy but overall the new location looks updated and clean.
Amazing food, okay prices, but messy seating and adequate service. The food is great and absolutely delicious. However, rather than an optional tip (which most people would give since most servers are quite nice) they give a mandatory 15% service charge. It feels quite rude knowing that even if the service was slow and sometimes messy, you are required to tip.
4 stars . The food is consistently hot and delicious. The service has become much friendlier. But look at your bill. Theyve add a 15% gratuity to EVERY check.
This seems to be one of the most famous restaurants in China Town. I think its because of their unbeatable pricing. For really cheap, you can get a lot of good food here. But its definitely not the best tasting food in my opinion but bad surely worth trying once. Their steamed custard buns were excellent and so was their service. The servers were lovely and the restaurant is very clean and efficiently run.
The absolute WORST SERVICE possible, yet they get away it s it because their food is so good. Their prices have more than doubled in the last 10 years and they add mandatory tip on to your bill now. Before they used to just scream at you if you didn t tip or tip enough, so I guess they decided to bypass that and just add it in the bill. lol I don t understand how the city doesn t get more complaints about this business more often and fine them for bad practices.
Dim sum is reasonably priced, delicious, and the food comes out quickly. The food was really satisfying, so I think Ill go there often. I also pressed the tip directly and the only card I had was a MasterCard, but only Visa cards were accepted;,, so I paid $50 in cash. I felt good while eating the food, but I was a little upset when I paid the bill. There arent many restaurants like this, so Ill go again. Its the same,,,
We dined here one night very late, around 2 am, with some friends who are dim sum lovers, and they were thoroughly impressed. Everything was fresh and tasty. The restaurant is clean, family-friendly and suitable for groups. Good choice for a satisfying dim sum experience!
Good real Chinese food.
Amazing calimari and super quick service
They make a great hot and sour soup.
10/10 would recommend!
Really excellent dim sum, and the serving staff is very quick and kind. Beware, the food comes out piping hot, which is terrific, but make sure to let it cool before you scald your tongue Food : 5/5
Food was amazing. Very busy here so expect a wait. Get the garlic green beans.
Bad bad , and 15% service mandatory, or else!
LOVE the food here. Dim Sum is top notch and they have great Chinese dishes. Usual service where they kinda ignore you lol gratuity is built into the bill at 15% FYI
Really good dim sum. The servers were nice, fast and efficient. I can understand why they have such long line ups. Tip is already included in the bill which to me is a plus but some might not agree. Only downside is that the seating is very tight. Would recommend/ would come back again
So we drove from Kitchener to Toronto just to eat at Rol San. Everything about this place is first quality....the service, the food, the vibe of the place. Of course I forgot to take photos, so I can only say that you wont be disappointed if you go here. Amazing food!!!
Had take out and instead of 2 items received 1 but payed for 2. the package looked small that s why I asked the waiter who once again told me that it s 2 items. But he lied :( Double check your order, do not trust the service here. Especially for take out. Food was good tho, unfortunately this ruined it for me.
We have ordered delivery of dinner and dined in on numerous occasions for dim sum. Presently Rol San is operating in half the intended space as renovations are continuing in the building next door. Happy that the current small dining room is available, but does make peak dining hours a challenge. The line-up out the door can become chaotic if the staff do not keep patrons orderly. When staff are not paying attention, there remains some patrons who linger at tables during peak hours. Highly recommend the dim sum, everything was top notch in flavours. The shu mei are huge and topped with roe, the rice rolls were perfectly steamed and incredibly tasty with the sweet soya sauce, the rice in lotus leaf had great texture and was very filling. Noted soup dumplings are dumplings in a soup broth, we thought we ordered dumplings filled with soup. Nevertheless the soup dumplings arrived filled with vegetables and meat and were super delicious. The fried shrimp wontons were huge and so crispy. NOTE the 15% automatic tip added to the bill, as well there is a charge for tea. Service is ok once you get past the line up. Will be returning for dim sum again for sure, as for the dinner delivery we had, it was not the level of taste we anticipated, but will order delivery again before further comment. There is a close Green P parking lot around the corner in Kensington market. Parking: Green P paid parking lot around the corner
Got ripped of, payed for two but got one
Great place to go with a big group. It s cheap but still high quality
I ve been going to Rol San for almost a decade; last night was my first time going to their new location. For a long time Rol San s crispy beef was my favourite of all the crispy beef in all of Chinatown. Last night it was so crispy I could barely bite into it. The deep fried egglplant with shrimp had oil dripping out it, so it tasted only of oil. It was a huge disappoint and WASTE Of $60. I m not sure I ll go back :(
Rol San is to be considered synonymous with quality Cantonese Cuisine. Though you may have to wait for a table, same is worth every minute. From the Chinese broccoli and snow pea leaves with garlic to the har gao, siu mai, and squid tentacles, everything was succulent and delicious. Go with an appetite and a couple of friends to be able to order a good spread. You ll be happy you did!
Fantastic food at resonance prices
One of my go to dim sum spots in Toronto. Great service and delicious food!
Why are there boards in front of Rol San?
Tastiest dim sum. Hot, fresh deliciousness. This place is sooo busy because its great - theres always a lineup Sunday mornings, so we get there right for 10 am when they open. Thisll ease up when they expand into the building next door. If you havent tried it yet, you really should.
So awful now compared to a few years ago. Foods are super expensive with little amount of food. Some dim sum I believe are NOT house made, seriously! Foods used to be so good and most of them with mushrooms but so different now!Not recommended!
Love it here! Never had a problem with the food. Never had a service issue either. Dined in person, takeout, and delivery. Always good. Same quality every time. Dim sum all day everyday. They also have a regular menu too. Both options are good. Super affordable and they let you take home after if you cant finish.
A pretty decent spot for dim sum downtown. The food comes out piping hot and tastes fresh. The space is a bit small and crowded though and there will probably be a line on the weekends.
Almost everything is good. Food is fresh. Just don t order shrimp wrap. You will lucky to get a shrimp or baby shrimp in the wrap. Stay away from that and everything will be good. Oh food was little on salty side. Food
Food was fresh and good but they have system to put clients on the table more than service mindset. (skip the line which I was waiting for 40 minutes and they take someone arrived after me skipping the line for a few times )
I really enjoyed the sweet and sour pork, shu mai, and the shrimp dumplings. the beef egg noodles is okay the mmmmm taste is missing and the sticky rice in the lotus leaf is not a rebuy for me. over all, the experience was amazing! great and fast service. and just on the note, i am not sure if this is a thing, but we were served with a tea as we sat, and it was billed to us. ( i thought it was complimentary because we didnt order it ) other than that, we are very happy and will definitely recommend this place,
Small and a bit cramped but quick service and good food
I barely go to any other dimsum places ever since I started going here. Most places stop selling dimsum after 3PM but this place has it even at midnight. Really great food with short time wait and reasonably cheaper than most restaurants. Parking is kinda limited but I understand since it s in downtown. Parking are available at Kensington Market FYI!
A staple for us for more than 25 years. It s a timeless place my friends and I come to heal and enjoy good, fresh, tasty food.
Great dim sum but I wish they didnt force a 15% tip on you. Such a cheap practice
Best dishes are all their dim sum menue
Fabulous food, comes out hot and full of flavour. Perfect atmosphere for busy dim sum weekend lunch.
Was told waiting time is 30 mins. I waited for 2 hours. Tip is included in your bill, whether you like to pay or not.
