Traditional Hungarian restaurant with authentic décor serving stew, schnitzel, dumplings & more.
I went there for a friends birthday, and our reservation was for 6pm and some of our friends were very late, because of the contruction traffic in the highway and the servers were really nice and understanding about it. They had live music which was nice to try the whole hungarian experience. The food was amazing, i had chicken liver soup and it was so good, the traditional wiener schnitzel was a huge portion, like everythinf else. Great value for your money, the only down thing of this place was only one bill on the weekends, so we couldnt split between all of us in that moment of paying.
The Snitzel was the size of a blanket 🤣. It was delicious. We had the Beef Goulash with Dumplings (Spetzel) as well, also great. Dobos torte and Chestnut Pure (the French call it "Mont Blanc") both amazing. We appreciated the friendly, prompt service and the live music entertainment.
Very nice staff , service was prompt and helpful. The beef stew and rice was ok , a little plain but for sure mash potatoes go with the beef stew gravy . I added the hot sauce and it taste better . The pork chops with very garlicky but tender . The home fries was nice and hot and crispy. The sausage was good . Definitely the stars was the crepe with walnuts and apricot jam and raspberry soda . I will definite go back here for dessert .
After my mother mentioned that she felt like having cabbage rolls for dinner, a quick Google search had Budapest as the closest restaurant to us. So we went for dinner on a Saturday. A little mom-n-pop type of restaurant that probably hasn't been redecorated since it opened, but that is fine because it just gives you a homey feel. Ample seating, polite & quick staff. Cabbage rolls were a success with mom and seemed to be a popular choice. I had the Meatloaf and was pleasantly surprised. Bonus was the mashed potatoes were flavoured. All things considered, the food is tasty and they give good portions for the price. Don't know if it's a daily thing or just on weekends, but they also a duet providing live music.
Visited the restaurant twice within a week, the place to go for all Hungarians or people who like our cuisine. Everything tastes like in Hungary, delicious food and perfect service from the kindest staff in Toronto. The only improvement area is your location, please at least a few of you could come to Houston to establish a similar place? ☺️
My favourite restaurant. My mother, the real Hungarian will tell you that you can’t get better in Hungary. 🇭🇺 Photos include Parisian schnitzel (the best), Hunter’s schnitzel (with sauce), cabbage rolls and plum dumplings (awesome). The food is better even than shown in the photos.
If you looking to experience true Hungarian cuisine this is the place for you. We had the wooden platter for two which was perfectly prepared and authentic. Goulash soup was phenomenal along with the cheese cake and Dobos cake for dessert. Highly recommend. Will definitely be back. The young man who served us was very kind and attentive.
Our first time dine in due to our go-to schnitzel place had closed down after the pandemic Ordered Goulash soup as a starter, full of taste. Then the chicken Hunter schnitzel was so delicious, and an apple strudel to end the meal. All satiated and satisfying 6pm prompt the live music started, it’s a one man band but it’s an icing on the cake. The interior is aged and the ambience is out of time, but it doesn’t reduce it’s a pleasant dining experience (They serve breakfast too, but it was an OK quality, nothing special)
The best. I dine in and order all the time from here all the time, food is so homey and comforting. It s the only restaurant I really crave often. We never leave disappointed. Not to mention, service is always attentive and warm
Traditional Hungary foods, big portions and taste good. The staff are very friendly and helpful to recommend the dishes to us. My favourite is their dessert Chestnut Puree and Somloi Galuska (home make tiramisu with whipping cream ). Absolutely will back again.
Nice indoor setting. Service could be improved. Food tasted okay, disappointed when food showed up to my table though and not looking the same as they posted on the menu, and they re identical to the ones you ll get in the food court.
We were looking forward to trying this place for months. My friend who is native to the land and visits every year was also excited. We were so disappointed with the quality, quantity and overall lack of care for the packaging. We were hoping to be repeat customers but never will waste over $120.00 (meal for two for take out) for this type of upsetting experience. Ruined our whole evening and added more stress to the day which was opposite of the purpose of this meal. How unfortunate.
Reliable and authentic Hungarian selections. Lunch specials are amazing !
A seriously good place for some authentic Hungarian food. Fresh and delicious. My only complaint, I suppose, is that there are no sauces served with the schnitzel. A follow-up visit to the table after service would have been great, too. Short of that, I will definitely be back and hope to fill that 5th star :-).
Such a nice place. We had soups nothing much but was totally delicious. Staff were patient and very accommodating. I will return for sure I cant wait to try the schnitzel. Highly recommended. Cheers and bon apetit
Super underrated. Tastes like Hungarian grandmas have descended from heaven to cook with heavenly love.Try the custard Square! You wont regret it
Budapest restaurant is the only place where you can eat Hungarian food in Toronto.
So yummy. We shared the combo plate and it was amazing and we took home 1/3 of it because its huge.
Great food, decent service.
We been ordering food from here a while now but the quality and quantity is keep declining today we order a traditional Wiener Schnitzel and they didn t even Add the Schnitzel to the meal . I mean everyone makes mistakes, but missing the main part of the meal ? Common now .
Ive gone to this place a few times now and have never left disappointed. This us definitely a restaurant worth checking out
Amazing food and very cute interior!
The valet is very bad. We havent eaten the food, but let me bring the straw! The amount of food was small, but it was not enough for 2 people for 4 people. Rantott beef was smelly and small as the palm of your hand. Filippin pincerno is very disrespectful to guests! The 15% extra fee for more than 2 people on the block, when you consume 4 people, you have to pay a 15% fee, this is in the menu. Its all a drag. I do not recommend this place to anyone.
The best Hungarian restaurant in Toronto
Authentic Hungarian cuisine, everything was perfect, and I cant wait to return!!
Really good chicken schnitzel and they were accommodating for a large family
Got there for lunch on a Sunday. Pretty empty, but lots of to-go orders. The waitstaff were friendly and speedy. The food was out within 15min max. Had the goulash and schnitzel with dumplings. Dumplings were handmade, schnitzel was golden and delicious. The goulash was good, but Im use to it being a bit thicker. I would definitely come back to try more on the menu!
It was a good experience. People happy, food good, service good. All in all a nice suprise in a post covid world. Originally the review was done a year ago. Now I have to update it sadly. While the service was ok, the restaurant was understaffed. The servers were friendly. However the quality of the food has fallen off dramatically. Why? Cutbacks, lazy, ? Who knows for sure. But the bad food was off-putting to the point we will likely never return. The food was way too salty to cover up lack of proper spices for Hungarian food. The desert apple strudel had no apple in it at all. It wasnt even strudel, it was some kind of cake. But the management wouldnt acknowledge anything wrong especially at the prices they charge. So that sealed their fate in my opinion. I imagine others will eventually complain about the bad food in due time.
Food delicious service WOW
It was my first time coming into Budapest Restaurant, and I was immediately struck with feelings of home and comfort. The server was decent, a bit confusing at times, but the Hungarian ladies in the BOH did a great job with my meal. Cabbage rolls were delicious. The Sauerkraut was nicely flavoured, and the homefries and nokedli were simplistic yet wonderful. I will definitely come back, and I look forward to bringing friends while trying more of the menu! Vegetarian options: I recommend trying the Langos, Breaded Cheese, Breaded Mushrooms, and Lecsó!
Terrific authentic Hungarian food. Excellent pickled beets and schnitzel.. a lovely cabbage roll!
The Budapest always delivers a great filling meal. A wonderful wait staff and pleasant environment. I highly recommend.
Kid-friendliness: Yes Food
Phenomenal, authentic Hungarian food at a good price. Live gypsy music as well! 5/5 stars, have already planned my return.
The food came out in minutes luke warm. The schnitzel was as hard and dry as cardboard. The over salted potatoes looked and tasted as if they were left over from breakfast hash browns. The plum dumplings heavy and dry. The goulash with sourkraut tasteless. We did not take the chance and order dessert and coffee. My Hungarian mother is 93 and wanted us to all go out and have Hungarian food. What a terrible meal. The noodles and cucumber salad were ok. They serve no vegetables. The servers we very nice. Instead of having a limited menu that they can cook properly they have way too many pages of entrees. I am so upset that they call themselves a Hungarian restaurant. They are not a patch on the country Hungarian restaurant that just closed down after 60 years of good Hungarian cooking or the place that closed down in Yorkville. Go to the sweet gallery for Hungarian goulash soup and dobos cake bc that is all thats left of good Hungarian food. Budapest restaurant you should be ashamed of yourself. I am not a great Hungarian cook like my mom and grandmother but I am Michelin star compared to whoever is doing the cooking at the Budapest restaurant. You are so arrogant to think that people dont know the difference between good healthy food and your greasy unhealthy tasteless food representing Hungary. You should sit down and eat your own food.
Had schnitzel, pork chop, cabbage rolls. All were pretty good. Reasonably priced. Place wasnt fancy but homey family style. We wanted to get dessert elsewhere on the Danforth but nothing was open within reasonable walking distance so we came back. Had the freshly made apple strudel. Was expecting a pastry with chunks of apple but it was more like mincemeat. a bit disappointing. Would return in the future but not order this dessert.
With colleagues 8+ hungry souls. We all sat down and had a fantastic lunch. We have to do this more often!!! Bravo.
My favourite restaurant. Big portions, great value, attentive staff. Worth commuting from the other end of the city.
LAURIE. WHATever your name is that you wanna call yo urself the owner speaking to me like that today like I said on the phone. Go back home or go back and learn Canadian etiquette & ethics and I m sure you will do better. Other than that calling me 6 times after I told you not to call me because you re harassing me trying to do what ? You didn t solve the problem after 4 days so now I ll deal with it myself. Soup isn t supposed to be served white plastic bag you send for Uber. Your staff is horrible at communication and dealing with situations. I have no idea how you are running a business with your boy Christian when he doesn t even know how to deal with situations or can solve them. on the phone today and your staff yesterday was clearly a circus show. This is what happen with a legit 30.00 order. My Uber arrived with my order that was actually a bag of soup you will see in this picture. So I called the staff yesterday in the afternoon when I got my order and asked them what the hell is going on. Why is my order in the plastic bag and not properly packed. She said she would call me back. Funny enough the girl calls me back and says hey so we actually packaged your order properly and the girls said it was the driver because he was on a bike. Funny enough. My Uber was not on a bike he was driving a silver HOnda. So lies already. I can see that this was not packaged properly. Or they put it in way too damn hot and the packaging was damaged. I have no clue that s what it looked like to me. They said the magnet isn t there today she s going in and out and she ll deal with it. Okay never called me or delt with it. Today I call and some Christian guy goes back and forth back and forth says he can t do anything about it. It s Uber fault. The girl who working yesterday said that didn t happen. Blah blah blah then proceeded to tell me he doesn t care about my order either. And says well I said it because of you like Learn customer service Christian and I think the magager had to do a better job at dealing with the situations at hand then passing it on to employees that can t do anything but ruin the resultant s credibility.
By far the most authentic Hungarian restaurant in the city. The vibe is identical to an eastern European taverna found in Budapest. The schnitzel with peppers is my #1 pick.
Very generous servings, plus a good dark lager on tap.
Fantastic Period Food
Saw the food truck in front of my work and decided to give it a try. Yummy!! Tried the beef goulash with dumpling and added a side of sour cream. The chestnut puree was interesting too, perfect for a little after meal treat and not too sweet. Had that homemade taste that I like, had a lot of flavour. Will go back to try more dishes.
Fresh
it was not busy at 12 pm lunch time. Parking: Road side Parking with Meters close by. Food : 4/5 |
If u are Eastern European and ur family cooks just eat at home this is a complete disappointment. Seems like this might have once been a good authentic restaurant but was sold to someone with no passion for food culture. The atmosphere is dead and no one in the restaurant seems to be European I wonder why lmfao
Ordered from their food truck on University Ave. Amazingly good schnitzel on a bun.
A very nice and very authentic Hungarian experience. We had a platter for 2 to try everything out, and it was great. There was lots left to take home. We were in on a Saturday evening, it was busy and there was live music.
Ive come here in the past & the food was excellent, but today the food was garbage, salty like crazy. I will never come back here again because the replacement was smaller. The deserts were even worse. I cant believe how bad it all was & they didnt want to fix any of it. They make Hungary look bad. The singer was excellent. Parking: Street parking & also a parking lot close by. Wheelchair accessibility: Large door opening.
We order take out from Budapest regularly. Always tasty!
Friendly staff. Great food. Vegetarian options: Breaded veggie dish with dumplings is great and reccomended Food : 5/5 |
Everything was very good! The taste is very special and I really like the attention in the place, I really recommend it!
Had a delicious dinner & will definitely go back for dessert!
The food, the vibe, - everything is perfect! My first experience went to my core memory a trip to Hungary in Toronto.
Great restaurant. Good value and amazing food. Sausage and dumplings are on top. Has live music some evenings.
Outstanding dishes and a very friendly owner (and great staff)! Would strongly recommend. Here are the real home flavors! I recommend trying the Hortobágy pancakes.
Very good food. We enjoyed our visit.
Great food! Like being transported back to the old country!
cute little joint. The food and service are great
This is a long established restaurant in the east end of Toronto that specializes in Hungarian cuisine. I have both dined in and ordered take out here a multitude of times over the years. Each time my meal was fresh, delicious and generous in portion size. In particular, the Weiner schnitzel and beef goulash (stew) are wonderful. The service staff is courteous and efficient. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor (summertime) seating. The bathroom facilities were well maintained. There is metered street parking available along the Danforth. I will continue to dine here when craving Hungarian specialties.
Decent Food.
I love Budapest. Its one of my go-to choices. Always tasty and authentic. A great place for the neighborhood.
Bought at the food truck today at hungarofest. Waited an hour (which isnt their fault). Got the schnitzel no condiments came with it. My friend and I both ordered the sausage and she got 2 small ones because she ordered with fries but they split a tiny one because I ordered it in a bun. How does that make any sense? Also again no condiments. So 10 for one plain baby sausage split in 2. Both were average.
Got the Budapest Platter for Two and it was really good! So much meat and good price for the amount of food.
Its good food bit upsetting how cheap they are. Not asking side with the cabbage roll and asking for bread on side.. they send 2 paper thin slice of bread with 2 meal! Common guys! I paid almost 40bucks and cant send bread??? At least food is okay but definitely overpriced
This was so disappointing, the chicken was overcooked dried out, and had no flavour. Just being honest
Generous portions at a fair price. Attentive service. Will definitely visit again.
Surprised by their beef tripe. Parisian schnitzel was good as well.
Always live going here...the food is great!
Hungarian as it gets! Hungary!
Family restaurant. Good.food and decently priced
Excellent schnitzels. Pork cotlet melts in your mouth. Mouth watering side dishes. Flour dumplings. Red cabbage. Beets. Cucumber salad etc. All I havd tried (except maybe the cabbage rolls) has been excellent. Been coming here for years and it never disappoints .
Very good! We wanted to try some Hungarian food that we cant make at home (two people with different tastes :-) and went to Budapest. The food was great, my wife had the cabbage roll (I hate cabbage) appetizer and again I goulash variation (with sauerkraut) and loved both. I had the stew with sausage. All very good. Slivovitz afterwards :-)
Food was half done, bad customers service, and the owner was rude. Never ever i gonna come back. This is not hungariqn restaurant.
Great weiner schnitzel. Great custard squares. Refreshing cucumber salad. The service was great, the portions were large. The décor is outdated, But it makes you feel like youre visiting a friends Grandmas house. Will definitely be coming back. Food : 5/5
Wow amazing flavors
it s good! we got the meal for two, and the fried food was a little tasteless, but all the sides + those cabbage rolls are to die for. i d go back just for those. a bit pricy, but a lot nice unfussy place to enjoy a meal.
Delectable, just add a little more salt to the schnitzel. Liver soup is delicious, so is the cabbage roll and mashed potatoes. Thank you!
My wife and I came here for dinner to enjoy some Hungarian food. As I have a half Hungarian background she was very interested in trying the kind of food my mother and grandmother would make when I was younger. I hate to say it .. It was a very mixed bag. The restaurant itself was nice and had nice big windows letting in a lot of natural light. The overall décor was not subtle about letting you know that this place was a Hungarian Restaurant, but not in a tacky way. They even had a gentleman on a keyboard playing music which was very nice. The staff was nice and friendly and never once made us feel anything else but welcome and comfortable. We got some starters and my wife got some Perogies & Sausage with sautéed onions, sour cream, and coleslaw topped with half debreceni sausage and it was great. The perogies were cooked well and tasted great and the sausage was full of flavor, so very satisfying. I had the cold cherry soup, something that I used to have on Christmas Eve dinner with my grandmother and I was very happy with the flavor. It was not exactly what my grandmother made, but it was great nevertheless. With how this all started, we were both really looking forward to the rest of the meal.... but ended up disappointed. My wife got the Wiener Schnitzel on a bed of rice and I got the Chicken Paprikash with Hungarian dumplings as that was a staple when I was growing up. The schnitzel was dry and breading had very little seasoning to it and the rice was bland, which was very surprising. This was something that my mother made from time to time and it was always full of flavor, especially the rice. The Paprikash was a very mixed bag. The dumplings were great and so was the sauce, but the chicken was dry and over cooked. It was like they took a few pieces of chicken from something else and just covered it in the sauce. I was expecting for the chicken to be full of flavor from cooking in the sauce and absorbing all that seasoning, not what I ended up getting. This place was overall a good experience and I hope we just showed up on a bad day, as this is definitely not how I want to introduce my wife to Hungarian food. But, we both agree that we will come and try this place again in the hopes of having a better meal. Wheelchair accessibility: The place has a ramp to allow people with mobility devices or wheel-chairs access to the restaurant. There was also space at the table to accommodate wheel-chairs and other devices. This was very nice to see.
I used to go to The Budapest Restaurant when it was at Bathurst/ Bloor area. So now, its on the Danforth. Love it.
Amazing food, service and live music to set the atmosphere. I m an west-ender but will be back to the east-end just for this!
As a Hungarian if I could give this place 0 stars I would. The dobos cake has a nasty aftertaste and the butter tastes spoiled and sour. The cherry strudel had a seed and I nearly broke my teeth. The whole place smells like booze and gives more of a bar vibe than an actual restaurant. The workers aren t that friendly and you feel like you are judged as soon as you walk in.
One of our favourite local restaurants. Staff are super friendly, and theres such a rich variety of Hungarian (and other) dishes. Prices are incredibly reasonable. They have an excellent breakfast selection, too.
Superb schnitzel and cabbage roll. I am coming back. They also deliver and the food is warm still when it arrives.
Delicious food and lively atmosphere. We even had live music! Ordered the platter for 2 but it could have fed 3 or 4 easily
The food was very good. The staff was very nice. Large portions are very tasty. I left stuffed. We ordered a player for two, and it was enough for 3 or 4
The food and the service were both exceptional. Traditional Hungarian dishes not only for Hungarians
Worst restaurant. Is it fight club or restaurant?
Outstanding in every way
Since Budapest opened weve been going there for breakfast lunch and dinner. I havent had a bad meal yet. I usually stick to the schnitzel (all sides are good) but every thing Ive tried I like (with the exception of the breaded pork cutlet....I wont be trying that again).
Mediocre schnitzel (pork, not veal for the Austrians out there). Lame potatoes and cabbage salad. Very bland paprikash. Nice people but I would not spend my money here again.
If you re looking for authentic Hungarian food look no further. The Qoulash was delicious. They even had the plum dumplings.
Very delicious food, excellent service
Great Hungarian food. Paprikash, Goulash, Dumplings, Schnitzel. all the hits - as well as a bunch of other Old Country favourites. I always get the Budapest Platter. Its a sampler of most of the meats on the menu. It says it serves two but could easily feed three. Great staff! They serve breakfast, too. Food
Too bad none of the servers speak hungarian, food is ok
Authentic Hungarian cuisine! It s a great spot I love coming here.
Great Hungarian food. Wheelchair accessibility: Ramp at the front door. Food : 4/5 |
Not a fancy place on the outside of the restaurant, but intrigued to try Hungarian food. The place is a lot bigger than you think it is. Service was good, came often enough to make sure we are okay. We ordered the Budapest platter for 4 for three adults because we wanted to try it. It was huge! Picked 2 sides which were rice and roasted potatoes. Upgraded one of the salads to a Greek salad and got a regular Cucumber salad. The meats all tasted flavourful and differently from each other. The schnitzel, porkchops and sausages were so good! Portions are massive and had lots of leftovers to take home. Would recommend to try with family, friends or casual date night. Id go back because I want to try other dishes. Kid-friendliness: Seemed to have lots of kids come in and out of the place when we were there.
This is a great restaurant, with delicious Hungarian food!
Traditional wiener schnitzel with dumplings was surprisingly bland. Sauerkraut was better, but I wasnt wowed. So maybe I dont appreciate Hungarian cuisine, or maybe Budapest could spice things up a bit.
I fully understand that people mostly come here for dinner for the massive meaty platters, I do agree that theyre excellent and Ive had one in the past, loved it. This place actually has a breakfast menu, a very unassuming one at that. Let me tell you though, at the price point offered, this might be one of the absolute best breakfast spots in the city. Everything is seasoned and cooked so well and with care, the home fries and breakfast sandwich I had both tasted fantastic and unique to the usual fare found at breakfast spots, didnt need much ketchup at all as the meal was already full of flavor - and filling as well. I cleaned that plate UP today like no ones business and will probably come back specifically for breakfast again. I highly HIGHLY suggest you do the same if youre reading this! We were the only ones seated eating brunch on a Sunday and its an undocumented crime. Please give this place a try for breakfast, its a gem. Great service too, both for dinner and breakfast :)
Food came out fast, large portions. Musician was a little loud would be my only comment but conversation still audible
A lot of fun. Great food, interesting menu. Live music too.
Delicious food - friendly service. Reasonable value for money. But the desserts could be better. Food : 4/5
Fantastic traditional food!!!
Amazing food and service!
Food is fine, wish I could say the same about the service. Sorry, will take my business elsewhere.
They have GREAT food here. Ive dined in and taken out. The goulash, chicken schnitzel and cabbage rolls are amazing. Oh and their dumplings with sauce. Mmmm so yummy. Thank you for serving my feel good food. See you again very soon!
The worst meal that I have ever had.
Nicely prepared and great tasting schnitzel! A little light on the veggies.
Really enjoyed the stew with dumplings.
All we had was great! And prices were not bad at all. Will come back
Amazingly delicious! And absolute comfort food for central Europeans, Hungarian, German and Slavic. I had delivery and it was precisely as offered. And the delivery person was super nice and personable. Not the first time Ive ordered from the restaurant, and certainly wont be the last.
We met Hungarian staff (chef and waiter), the service was nice, and the food was really delicious. Unfortunately, we were unable to meet the owner, but maybe it will be possible another time. Thank You -:)
My husband is Hungarian, we really enjoyed the stay at Budapest restaurant. We will come back definitely.
This is a Hungarian place so of course they serve Hungarian food. The food is good, the service is good, and they have an outside dining area. It is street parking only. I recommend the cold cherry soup if it is available.
Food and service were top shelf.
Good food. Stupid service. Won t come again.
Server has communication issues.Borderline rude.
The Budapest restaurant was great! The portions were large and the menu has lots of choices! I loved the service and decor!
First time at a Hungarian restaurant. Fast service, good portions, delicious food! We had dinner on the patio.
Food was very tasty and reasonably priced.
Great food and service for a big group.
Went for dinner with two Friends. Two out of the three meals were satisfactory, although I dont get the tiny plates for dinner with the food hanging off. We each had the breaded chicken schnitzel with fries and a small side of vinegary coleslaw, each. Unfortunately the third person ordered some kind of pork chop come tenderloin, with a bone and it was disgusting. It looked like it had been heated up. Even the colour looked gross. He refused to eat it. They took it off our bill. He then requested what we ordered, but they did not bring anything else for him. Would have been willing to pay for it. Some garbled excuse that the manager was not in. Not good, so we will not be retuning and do not recommend. Service from the era of communism !
Everything I ve ever eaten here is excellent. Love the Hunter Schnitzel, cabbage rolls, beef stew, goulash, etc. This restaurant is my go to when I want to be transported back to Budapest.
Schnitzel and dumpling were great! (5/5 stars). The schnitzel had the perfect amount of crunch and tenderness. And you can t go wrong with Hungarian dumplings. Chicken paprikash and mashed potatoes were bad. The paprikash sauce had a skin over it as if it had been sitting for a long time. The chicken was barely warm and tasted like it had been sitting out for a long time and then microwaved for 30 seconds? The mashed potatos had potential but were quite dry. Service was good. For the quality of the food, I thought the meals were overpriced. Would come back, but only for the schnitzel.
If you want to feel like visiting hungarian culture and taste, this is the only restaurant you need to go, I tried the other Hungarian restaurant in bloor west, this one by far the best taste and atmosphere, with great service, Definetly Visit Again !!!! Best Gulash Soup In Toronto.
Met friends at this little hideaway for dinner on Canada Day. A Hungarian restaraunt in the middle of Greektown, Not exactly a modern take, but roomy and comfortable...even had live music. Good european beer to wet the whistle before digging into some fanatastic goulash...the kind my grandfather use to make. Then on to some perogie and sausage appetizers that also brought back good memories, before starting into the pork paprikash (with dumplings and gravy of course). My grandfather would make the large dumplings while here they served the mini dumplings. The flavour was still great though. Desserts are locally made by true artisans. I had what was called the Hungarian form of tiramisu....it was light and delicious!...the perfect finisher. Out of the way, comfortable adn delicious....what more do you want?
As an Hungarian-American who now lives in Toronto, I can honestly say its a blessing that if Im craving Hungarian foods, I can actually go somewhere to get it rather than cook it myself (sometimes you know, we just dont want to cook after a long day!). The food here is authentic, delicious, and comes in huge portions (if thats your thing). The service is always friendly and Im assuming that if one goes and doesnt really know Hungarian food, theyd be knowledgeable as well to walk you through the menu. Go there and make sure to get the langos!
I order takeout and delivery from them often - ultimate comfort food. My favourites are their schnitzel (obviously), mashed potatoes, rice, and their chicken noodle soup. Has saved me many a time when I m sick and it is perfect with angel hair pasta. Consistently large portions. Absolute must
Excellent dinner for two. Best option to try a variety of Hungarian food. The cabbage rolls are amazing, and I dont typically like cabbage rolls. The cucumber salad is a must try. The classic pork Schnitzel is better than most of the top rated Schnitzel houses in Vienna.
Had a great time celebrating my Apas 75th birthday here! Thanks! Food was great.
The food is very good...mostly. Ive been several times and have had chicken schnitzel, hunters schnitzel, pork paprikash, chicken paprikash, fried veggie appetizer. All were good except the chicken paprikash. You can tell its reheated - each time Ive had it, the texture of the chicken is dry, very firm and tough and not heated through. Its not good but the rest is. Cook/heat the chicken paprikash longer, guys. The pork paprikash is great and always tender! Their dumplings are lovely with nice texture - not mushy. The perfect side for paprikash. The mashed potatos are meh. The schnitzel is reliably great! Generous portions and tasty....did I mention it was generous? The size of the dinner plate, generous. Bravo! Theyre proud of the apple strudel but I found it bland with mushy dough. The service is basic but when they are busy, the wait staff can be heard yelling instructions at each other. There is definitely a mother hen on the floor. They make a racket clearing tables with clanging dishes and dragging chairs. Its a jarring occurrence during dinner, especially if its the table next to yours....but its not as bad as their yelling. They also walk around as if the place is burning down and theyre in a panic - definitely not conducive to a pleasant dining experience. Lets call it bustling. Theyre very nice and polite when interacting with guests, so I guess theres that. Adjust your expectations accordingly and youll have a great time. The food is the star here.
We went there for lunch. The food was delicious, we got a huge portion for two with a bit of everything. We like it. The service is not bad, they really worry if you are enjoying. We arrived a bit early so left we could see that they were preparing for a live music. Just the atmosphere that need a bit effort to be more inviting.
Attila the best chef in the town!
Delicious Hungarian food, large portions for the money, and a friendly, family-style environment.
We found the portion size average - not large as some reviews stated. Even when we mentioned we drove all across the city as the reviews called us to a very delicious and large schnitzel. Bread should have been offered with meal. Left still hungry. Staff were welcoming and did ask how the food tasted.
Great schnitzel,.best strudel Ive had in a long time
Food was really good. Loved the Hungarian singer they had performing, he wasnt too loud or too quiet, just a the perfect level.
I was really impressed with the food The service and the people. The place was clean I highly recommend a European Restaurant On the Danforth this is I. Thanks to everyone and the cook.I will definitely come back in the future
Everything was delicious.
Started ordering here during lockdown and now dine in from time to time. Haven t been disappointed yet. Great portions, tasty food, pretty fast turn around. Worth a try if you haven t tried Hungarian food or are looking for familiar comfort food.
Great place and tasty food.
Excellent food
Fantastic menu, great portions consistently a great place to go with friends and family. Live music on the weekend combined with the decor- so Eastern European! Love this place!
Really nice experience. A friend and I had a delicious lunch with soup and schnitzel. He had the traditional Veiner Schnitzel, which was a huge portion that he had leftovers to have for dinner later. I had the pork cutlet with mushroom sauce - it was the spicy version but wasnt very spicy (IMO), so added siracha and that kicked it up to nirvana! The service was warm, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive - props to Christian. Looking forward to our next visit.
Love it, veey good food with the best prices
What a surprise this place was. Dropped in on a Friday evening for the first time. They had live music. Super pleasant service. Tired the Wiener schnitzel with dumplings and cucumber salad. Very tasty and good portions. And it was so reasonably priced. Will return.
Ordered chicken schnitzel sandwich and parisian chicken schnitzel sandwich. One sandwich had two portions served with fried potatoes. This could serve two people (depends on the consumption level and it varies with people). Interiors are quite classy, and the view from restaurant is scenic . They also serve drinks
Amazing food, just like my grandmother used to make The live music was also a nice touch and enjoyable. Food was delicious and hit the table hot! A+++++ all round.
Excellent food. Chicken schnitzel is great. Dumplings are very tasty.
Take out food was exceptional.
The food was excellent. The prices were very very good and the portion size was amazing.
Fast and fresh we always get the platter for two with coleslaw, roast potatoes and dumplings excellent portions with enough for another dinner to take home. The goulash deserves mention as well. Only negative is the inconsistent music. Sometimes theres music sometimes there isnt and they need to play dinner music maybe Hungarian or something. Another sensor light before you go downstairs for the washroom as well. Overall always a great experience and always great food. Adios amigos!
The food was very good, and the service was fairly quick, polite and friendly despite having a group of 20 to serve. The restaurant decor is tired however the food made a difference and Ill go there again.
This is a great neighborhood restaurant, the goulash was fantastic
My wife ordered the schnitzel, it was very good. I had the cabbage rolls, I was very happy with it. The gesztenye puré was not to our liking. All in all; the meal, the service, the atmosphere was correct. We will return.
Phenomenal schnitzels, great beat, & cucumber salads, as well hearty soups.
This feels like a hidden gem on Danforth -- if youre looking for Hungarian food then dont miss out on Budapest Restaurant! The food was fresh and delicious and portions were great. The best part was the homemade custard squares, they arent always available but make sure you get one if they are. We went on a Sunday for lunch and it wasnt too busy, and the service was lovely. Highly recommend!
Love the Hungarian feeling of this place! The service is also great in every way! Really great representation of Budapest. Loved this place

Too noisy with loud music. Chicken paprikash was bland but dumplings were good.
We have dined at this neighborhood restaurant a few times. Favorite menu item is the Goulash, rich broth with beef and vegetables. The dumplings (a side dish for main menu items of beef, chicken, tripe) are delicious with accompanying sauce. I had planned to order the Natur Schnitzel (without breadcrumbs) but decided to try the Gypsi Steak (pan fried pork chops) with onions, sausage and a side. Very tasty but pork chops over cooked, with part of it very hard. Service is friendly but need to be very specific when ordering. I had ordered the the Gypsi steak and dumplings, with sauce on the side. What came out was the Gypsi steak on a plate, with sauce in a bowl. Way too much sauce, which we barely touched. Did not realize server added it as a side order $5.50 plus tax plus tip. Instead of making a fuss, we paid the bill and left.
Delicious food at excellent prices staff extremely friendly
Im giving this place an overall 4/5 even though my last experience was more a 3/5. I ve had better food at this place, but last time was just okay. It may have been an off day for everyone including our server. Hopefully better days to come.
Such a lovely and cozy place to dine in . It has all the traditional hungarian meals and they are delicious . The service is exelent as well . I highly reccomend to visit this traditional restaurant or they offer take out and catering
