Very interesting place. The host was an amazing guy. Some live entertainment as well. Pub food but good pub food. The atmosphere is really why you wanna be here. Cozy and friendly
This was the perfect place to spend a cozy Friday evening with a friend! The outdoor patio is the place to be (given some good weather). I was happy with the gnocchi I ordered. Our server was super friendly too.
Popped in on a Saturday afternoon. Hidden oasis of a back beer garden that takes you away from the wall of sound on Bloor West. Service was attentive and friendly. Chicken sandwich was devine, Guinness tasted superb. Will definitely be back.
To respond to the owner: Here is a photo of the food we ate. And the QR code with your menu. My friend had a fried chicken sandwich and I had the burger. You are having a trivia night tonight, correct? We sat on your outdoor seating area which you have to go up the stairs to get to. I am certain I went to your establishment. I live close by. The server that served the back outside area was our server. I have never had a ruder server in the history of my life. She seemed friendly at first. Then she brought us dirty cups for the water. I ignored this fact but I should of left then and there. I told her I wanted a virgin mocktail but something that wasn't sweet; she said she could make me something. She brought me back straight-up ginger beer, which is a very sweet sugar-filled pop. I can't drink something that sweet for health reasons. You would think that she would of at least checked in with me, is ginger beer (AKA POP) okay, but she clearly did not care which is why she is a terrible server. Then I told her hey this is way too sweet I can't drink this, she aggressively stared me down and said nothing and I felt super uncomfortable so I said I will pay for it and it was fine. I was of course expecting her to say no this is my fault let me clear this for you or something. What kind of person brings a pop to someone who has just asked about having a drink that isn't too sweet? Is pop not considered sweet anymore? Also, I make this request at every restaurant I go to and they either say yes we can or no sorry we can't. I have never had someone tell me they can make me a not sweet mocktail and then bring me straight up pop. It's actually laughable. She included the 8 pop on the bill and we wanted to talk to her about it. Please keep in mind when I said we would pay for it I didn't know at that time she had handed me straight up pop. Once I knew that after checking the menu I was understandably upset that someone cared so little for me and my health when it's their literal job. We inquired with her and asked why a pop was given to me in the first place and why it would be charged when I couldn't drink it. She unapologetically looked at me and rudely said "she said she would pay for it" like a teenager and then abruptly left the table and slammed the outside balcony door on us. Never in my life have I dealt with a server that has such poor communication skills or emotional regulation. She couldn't even be bothered to say, "I am sorry there was a misunderstanding but I can't remove it from the bill." If she had of been able to communicate in that manner I wouldn't of written this review. I can afford to pay for the 8 dollar pop, it's the fact that that she walked away from us and slammed a door in our face which was extremely rude. I live close to here and I will never be coming back, and I will be warning all my friends and family not to come here. The fried food is good but it is mostly bar food and very salty and greasy. Don't come here looking to eat anything remotely healthy. The atmosphere would have been nice if the server wasn't so awful. You could tell she asked the other server to bring us our food too after I told her the drink was too sweet and lied and said we were being mean to her, which we certainly were not. We visited Thursday July 25th around 7:40. Don't be fooled by her fake friendliness she was annoyed literally just by us asking questions about the menu.
I was super excited to have my first fish and chips of the summer here, but I think they should change their menu to say mino and chips to be more accurate to what you actually get. The service was nonexistent as well, walking by numerous times without checking on our table. Won’t be returning.
Got a Guiness and fish and chips, both were very good, the Guiness was smooth. Service was great and fast. Was not too busy until 7:30pm ish.
I’m not even a brunch person and they have me hooked. I’ve tried most of their brunch items and I have no idea which is my favourite because they’ve all been truly incredible. Though I highly recommend getting any savoury dish to start, then splitting the french toast (it’s to die for). I think that’s the move.
Bruch here is SPEC-TA-CU-LAR! Officially my new favorite brunch spot... by a landslide. Everything we had was next level. The Eggs Benny was superb - the peameal bacon is cured in-house and was cooked to perfection, not soggy not dry, the perfect thickness. The hollandaise sauce was exquisite - silky, rich, yet light, like a luxurious blanket - nothing soggy, lumpy, overly salty about it. Poached eggs were perfection, not even a hint of lingering vinegary taste you get everywhere that had me almost swear off ordering eggs benny altogether. Home fries were the right amount of crispy and not too salty (miracle). Even that kale side salad was perky and properly dressed. But the excellence just kept coming. Thank gahhhd we ordered that side of bacon and steak - cuz they were friggin amazing. So amazing that I actually asked why the bacon was so good, perfect thickness, excellent taste - and was told it's also made in-house! That piece of steak would hold it's own next to some fries as a dinner item - it's phenomenal. Whatever cut that is, it's moist, flavourful, and gorgeously prepared - a very far cry from the shabby, tasteless, chewy write-offs that you get from most places with 'steak and eggs' on the menu. Whatever you got, get that side steak too! It's not too much. You will not regret it. I can't stop thinking about it. We also got the Cinnamon French Toast - it's bruch after all - which was superb - light, not too sweet, whipped cream was obviously fresh and home made - a very classy touch. Service was super friendly and attentive, and the vibe here was perfect for brunch, and the quality for the price has to be one of the best in the city. Get you some brunch here ASAP!
I doubt there is a person named Whelan that runs this place but I wish there was - regardless, Whelan should know that the two servers that we had were probably the best Ive ever had in Toronto. My tables drinks were never empty and they were super professional. Whelan should know that these guys are making you tons of money and keeping a whole room full of people very happy. Great place, great food but lets be honest all of it suffers if there isnt great service.
Upstairs on Tuesdays is always a lovely time. Check the schedule for livelier fiddle music if thats your thing, it may be posted on the board. Also be here for st. Patricks day =)
What a cozy gem in the west end! It s a classic neighborhood Irish bar with a welcoming, homey vibe. The atmosphere is lively, and the patio is perfect for relaxing on a warm day!
What a gem! Big shout-out to Mike, who provided amazing (and fun!) service. Will be back, and I cant wait!
Great pub with great food and great service
Burgers are delish!
Beautiful local pub in high park and lovely patio upstairs . Staff is very friendly and courteous.
nice little nook, friendly hosts.
HUGE shoutout to the staff today!! A group of 13 of us showed up unannounced this afternoon and the staff immediately worked to accommodate us. The bartender was absolutely fabulous and the food was incredibly tasty. Ill definitely be coming back!!
Lovely pints and people
Would highly recommend this pub. Atmosphere food and customer service was above all. Would definitely return to this pub.
Brussel sprouts are great, lagers pretty good, awesome service
Cozy place. Friendly staff. Live music. 5/5 stars
Tuesday nights live irish music and honestly one of Torontos best burgers and the friiieeeesssss delicious, crisp, salty, yum
Wow, just wow! Whelan s Gate is an absolute gem! From the moment we stepped in, I felt like I was transported straight to the streets of Galway. The live music, the cozy traditional vibes, and those super cheerful bartenders! We ended up spending hours here, completely losing track of time. My hubby surprised me with this spot, and it was love at first sight! Special shoutout to Mike at the bar his friendly banter made it feel like home away from home. Cant wait to make this our regular spot! #IrishInToronto
Wheelchair accessibility: No. Food
Wheelans gate is the best pub in Toronto! The staff are incredible. So friendly, helpful, and prompt. They take great pride in their establishment. I ve had many many items from the menu and everything is delicious! Especially recommend the buffalo wings and burger :)
Didnt eat. Best part of this place is the patio..service was meh. Wouldnt stay inside. But patio is great
Went last night for the first time to their Thursday trivia at 7pm. Was so much fun. They had a beer special and the food was really good. Its a super old fashioned looking pub. I will definitely be going back!
Perfect for a pint
exactly what you want from an Irish pub
Beautiful local spot with good people. Comfortable and cozy. Fresh beers on tap. Highly recommend a visit.
We were in the private upstairs room for a celebration of life. Great room. Quite cozy. Great bar tender. Didnt eat but the food ordered by other guests look good.
Great live music on Tuesday night. Excellent audio system. Nice atmosphere. Decent playlist. Same goes for service.
Some of the best steak in Toronto I said it, also very good service Kid-friendliness: Very kid friendly Food : 5/5 |
Like all the reviews say, service was awesome (shoutout to James for keeping the smile through the New Year s Eve madness!) Food was okayish Food
Great beer and yummy food!
Great place! James was amazing and served us the best cocktails for New Year s!!
Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff.
10/10 would recommend
Nice quiet pub in the neighborhood. The vibe is as close to an authentic English (or Irish) pub as you can get in Toronto these days. The beer selection was good, the service was quick and attentive, and the music wasnt so loud you had to shout. If I had to criticize Id say the wings were unnecessarily saucy, but really thats just nit picking (they still tasted great).
An excellent and atmospheric example of Irish Pub, very cozy :)
The food is really good, try the steak frites, wings, and burger. The Whelan s Lager is great.
first time visiting, on thursday night for dinner and drinks. service was good but i got absolutely ruined with food poisoning. ordered the burger. super unfortunate. update: owner reached out and was really thorough with response and covering all corners. this establishment takes food handling and safety very serious and was just an unfortunate event for me.
fun place great staff
Great place to have a beer and burger. You can tell from the patrons that its an intergenerational place, with a good environment, great music, and friendly staff! Amazing spot for an after hours!
Great neighborhood pub with a fun and welcoming atmosphere and quality selection of beers. The bartender Derek was excellent! Overall great time.
Great drinks, great food. I ve been to Wheelans many times and always leave happy. The burger is genuinely one of the best in the city, the schnitzel is perfect, best I ve ever had outside of Germany and Austria. You can tell everything is made from scratch and in house. Stellar food in such a cozy casual atmosphere with great service. This place is definitely a hidden gem.
Amazing lil pub with great food and a cozy atmosphere. Its a limited menu, but all great selections prepared well. Vegetarian options: Would love to see a few more vegetarian options on the menu.
I spent St. Patricks day here and the service was exceptional during such a busy time. The pints were always perfectly poured, the Fernet was flowing. There was a limited menu for this day which made sense. All of the food was delicious and fast. The staff were very friendly and helpful and were proactive in assisting us.. even the staff at the door kept everything positive as people waited. Highly recommended.
Really exceptional service on St Patrick s day, I wish I could remember our servers name but he was amazing!!
Nice Irish pub. However its pretty small, so expect a long queue on Fridays-Saturdays
Great live music tonight!
Went for st Paddys day. Place was packed. Great true Irish feeling pub. Service was quick and super friendly. Didnt do any eats but damn the burgers looked amazing. Will be back for sure when its not as busy.
Love this BAR, the ambience is wonderful. Love the patio upstairs. Always clean and inviting. The food is amazing, from the Fried Chicken, Falafel Burger, Chicken Wings, etc. Highly recommend having some food and drinks here.
Came here for the trivia and would have been happy with a cold beer and the company but I was blown away by the food. The fried chicken sandwich hit all the right notes and will bring me back even if there isn t trivia going on! (The trivia was great too! Having been to a few different trivia nights in the city over the years, this was a gem! Not too easy, but fun!)
One of my favourite spots in the city. The hamburger and fries are my favourite but all the food is excellent and they may excellent drinks with a great beer selection. The new brunches are great too! Also, the trivia nights on Thursdays are so much fun!
I offered to take this review down if I got a reasonable explanation for what happened. Having exchanged emails with the owner, the explanation provided is that it is very hard to find employees these days. So this review stands. __________________________________________ Just had a really disturbing experience at Whelans. Upon taking our seats, our server came to our table and seemed very talkative and informed....we placed our order, he served us drinks, all was going well. After having a few sips of our beers the waiter returned to check on us and my wife asked why the glass in which the draft beer was served was small, not a full pint. The server provided an explanation, which sounded reasonable, citing overcharging by the big beer companies (Guinness etc.) and how the bar and the employees suffered as a result, and how this required Whelans to serve small glasses of draft beer to cover the cost of the expensive commercial beers they took a loss on. We heartily agreed, thought we bonded, and then ordered locally produced beers, and shortly after, we ordered food. The food arrived and one of the folks at our table told the waiter she thought the fish (of the fish and chips) was overdone. So the server took the plate back, quite brusquely, and returned 15 minutes later with a new order and an explanation. He stated it was the colour of the paprika-spiced batter that made the fish look overdone. Which we all agreed was correct. Problem solved, so we thought. 30 minutes later.....the server arrives at our table again, puts the bill on the table and announces to us that we are no longer welcome at Whelans, that we are to leave, because we have offended him with our abuse and rudeness. And further, that we are examples of entitled people. He made a point of telling me, the only male, that he didnt have an issue with me. Perhaps that lends my comments some credibility. A few minutes later, while two members of our group explained to the waiter that a misunderstanding had occurred, that we had in no way disrespected him or intended to disrespect him, that we in fact agreed with his explanations of the fish batter and the small size of the beers, the server stated loudly, so all the patrons of the bar could hear, that he would be calling the cops if we did not leave immediately. Wow! My opinion is that our server was so wildly oversensitive, that he spun several ordinary, innocent interactions in to a mistaken perception of a personal attack. And then escalated it to the point of calling the cops. Choose your staff carefully is my takeaway.
While in the mood for some cheeky late-night snacks, the welcoming visage of wagon wheels was calling our names. With a comfy atmosphere, fun crowd, and cheerful bartenders, we were excited for a fun night out. However, the food was so underwhelming that our enjoyment didn t last longer than the pints in front of us. To be fair, the taps were fully loaded and the tall can selection had better variety than most pubs triple the size. This is the type of place I could see myself, under ordinary circumstances, spending a lot of time at. Though the lighting was bordering on almost-too-dark, it was cozy and jovial what s not to love? The food seemed on the more expensive side, but if it tasted as good as the atmosphere felt, we were in for a home run. We ordered the fish & chips and the wurst, as well a variety of tall cans from the drink menu. The bartender seemed confused about a couple of the drinks and had to double-check with a coworker. The food arrived suspiciously quickly and we dug in. It was too dark to really enjoy the plating of the food which was ultimately the downfall. The sausage plate was under-seasoned. The coleslaw was plain and salty and the fish was undercooked. Completely raw actually. Unfortunately we had eaten a fairly significant portion until something felt fishy and our stomachs dropped. We had to use the flash on our cellphones to determine that the batter was still wet and uncooked inside, and the fish was as raw as sashimi. The staff were quick to send it back and replace it, but by then the damage had been done and our appetites were gone. They were very apologetic every time they returned to the table, spoiling the mood with excuses and explanations, eventually returning with a free round of whiskey shots. They took the fish off the bill, but we paid for everything else and went on our way despite truly intending to spend the whole evening. There were no hard feelings as it seemed like an honest mistake, and maybe someday there can be a glorious second chance. Here s holding out hope.
Very glad to report that my favourite west-end pub now hosts my new favourite weekend brunch! All home-made ingredients, including the smoked salmon in my Lox Benny . Perfect and delicious!
Been here many times over the past few years. Never a bad experience.
Phenomenal caesars and the benny meal was to die for.
Best local!!! Aewsome vibe, the patio is surprisingly good. Food is great, wings are all hot, even mild is really hot, if you dont like spicy, go with bbq jack Daniels, im sure you will love it. Beer is good and cold, service is fantastic.
Was having some drinks with a friend on Friday night when I couldnt help but overhear one of the employees conversations with the bartender. Apparently this employee had some issues with that group of brown guys upstairs. He went on to describe how rude they allegedly were and that they were such lousy tippers that the next time they came in he was just going to ignore them until they left (there was further banter as to how it must be a cultural thing but Ill leave that alone). Sufficed to say I was flabbergasted by this persons entitlement. Imagine a server ignoring a table of patrons because said server didnt feel they were being fairly compensated, in addition to their wages, for doing their job. Whelans used to be such a welcoming, fun and friendly place full of people having a good time. Its been considerably less busy the last few times Ive been in. After reading other poor reviews regarding a particular employee I can only surmise that this person is the one being referred to and I cant help but wonder if the decrease in patronage is a result of this persons lousy attitude. I hope management reads this and can rectify the situation. Do better Whelans!
I hosted a private event a Whelans Gate a few weeks back booking the entire upstairs and patio and it couldnt have gone better! Staff was great, they were really easy to coordinate with and friendly - everyone left happy and the burgers are incredible!
Whelan s makes for a great local, if you re looking for a chill spot with friends, or a cozy date. The old wood panelling makes for a great vibe with friendly regulars and some total gems on staff! Good draft selection and cocktails. Tasty eats. And unexpectedly good live music + trivia.
I love this local. The French fries are to die for. Their taste in beer is spot on. The patio is phenomenally hidden and storybook-like. And the Wednesday night regular band - Peter Graham And The Voyagers is one of my fav mid-week stops. Would also highly recommend the brunch on the weekend!
It may be a surprise, but the wings here are some of the best youll ever have. They serve whole wings, not just flatties and drumsticks. Great sauces to choose from and a decent price for what you get. Its a bit small as a bar, and there arent 100 places to sit, but if you are lucky enough to get a seat, order the wings and thank me later.
Wednesday evenings its buck-a-shuck. Great oysters. All the food is made in-house. Tasty house cocktails. Friendly and attentive service. Food
Love Whelans Gate! Delicious food, great service and cozy atmosphere. I travel from the east end for a pickleback (or two) and cheeseburger!
This was such a great random find. Service was awesome, the food was spectacular! The ribs and mashed potatoes were outstanding. Highly recommend for drinks and dinner.
Good food Good people work there
Whelans Gate, nestled near High Park, presents itself as an Irish pub and whisky bar with a promising selection of whisky and a lineup of special events every night. From music on Mondays to Wednesdays, to trivia nights on Thursdays, it certainly aims to keep its patrons entertained. With Irelands strong affinity for fish and chips, arguably even more so than in England, my curiosity was piqued. I wondered if there was a chippy out there that could rival the likes of Oxley, the best fish and chips in Toronto in my opinion. My initial impression, however, was a bit underwhelming. Whelans Gate chose an unconventional fish for their fish and chips: tilapia. Typically, haddock, cod, or halibut are favored for their mild and flaky textures. Nonetheless, I was open to embracing something different, as uniqueness can often lead to delightful surprises if executed well. The fish itself was remarkably well-seasoned. A single bite revealed a delightful blend of black pepper and salt beneath the batter. The fries, though slightly too thin for a classic fish and chips pairing and only half crispy, still managed to hold their own. Its worth noting that the fries might be better suited as a side for their acclaimed burgers, as per numerous rave reviews. Unfortunately, the positives end there. The batter was, in all honesty, quite disappointing. It possessed a rubbery texture, lacking the coveted crispiness that defines great fish and chips. It almost felt as if the batter had been prepared the day before and reheated, resulting in a consistency reminiscent of a rubber slipper. That is the only way that would be possible. Perhaps my next visit will see me opting for their burger, as it seems to have garnered more favorable reviews. Fish and chips enthusiasts may want to look elsewhere for their fix, as this dish might not be Whelans Gates strong suit.
A pub in the most classic sense with food drinks and atnosphere galore! Live music!
We just love this place! My friends and I were looking for a place to play Dungeons and Dragons on the weekend and Whelans Gate had exactly what we needed. They offered us a room set off the main area and the space we needed to play. They were so friendly and accommodating. It was the perfect place to play! And their burgers and fries are AMAZING!
The food, service and atmosphere are top notch here. But if you like good Irish sessions, skip the Tuesday night live music. They are not friendly to newcomers and they sing the same songs every week.
What a great experience. We came here for a birthday celebration. The staff was so nice. And the atmosphere was so inviting. The food was so good. Try the chicken wings! So crispy and nice. We got the space totally for ourselves intimate and private event. It fit 30 guest comfortably. The drink tab was decent too. Thank you so much! Cheers!
Nice local Irish pub. We only had beer and appetizers, but they know how to pour Guinness!
Nice small bar until you see the rest of it, then its a nice BIG bar.
This place had been on my list for a while after the amazing reviews. It was OK, the service is what makes this place great. The food was passable - we had the falafel burger (returned cause it was so dry) and then fish n chips (without tartar sauce?). The drinks were amazing! The live musics started quite late, so maybe caters to a late crowd.
What great atmosphere! I love how cozy this pub makes me feel, the staff are super friendly, and I love their trivia night. Too bad the food is so bad. Ive tried a lot of their menu items. Its all so bland, or super salty, the wings are so soupy. Honestly, this pub is a hair away from being a five out of five, but they gotta do something about the quality of the food.
Really cozy spot near keele subway station with a huge second floor. They run various activities like quiz night and even have live music! They clean their taps very well and have some pretty good snacks and food.
Ive never had the same experience twice here, doesnt help that theyve got such a deep connection to their community I keep coming back for the experiences, the staff, the drinks, the food.
Wow! What a gem! We were looking for an event venue in the area that served great food, drinks, and vibes and boy did we get it all. Threw my birthday party here a couple weekends ago and couldn t have been happier with the kind and cool people that work there (looking at you Jay and Carrie!) and the kitchen staff pumping out hot and delicious food for my guests. Had some of the best whisky sours all night long! We ll be back just for the burgers and we ll be sure to bring company.
Really good chicken sandwich!
Whelans Gate is always our favourite place to go for great pub food, a cosy atmosphere, great service and a wide selection of beer and whiskey. The menu changes seasonally. Just in time for Lent they have introduced fish and chips to their menu with homemade slaw and tartar sauce. The fish portions are just the right size with a crisp coating that doesnt overwhelm the fish or leave you with an oily taste in your mouth like I find of so many pub fish and chips. It is light and flaky. Im not a fan of tartar sauce, but this sauce has made me a convert! It is tangy, creamy and delicious! Also good to dip your fries in! Steve and his awesome crew have come up with another winner on their menu. We cant wait to come back again!
I like the ambiance and beer but main floor was cold for sitting
Such a cozy place to hang out and have a drink.
Best patio in Toronto. Nicest staff too. My fave watering hole in the neighbourhood. If this review makes this place so popular that I cant get in, then Ill be really sad.
This was my first visit to this bar and I was very impressed! The two servers at our table were excellent. Service was extremely quick (I would order a drink with a sip left in my current one and the new one would arrive before I was done) and they were both very helpful. I will definitely be returning!
Went for St. Pattys, Arrived at 5pm didnt get seated till 8pm, didnt make a stink it was a night out and I had opened a tab while we waited. Drinks ordered were 2 whiskey sours and beer, as they started to get busier they said they couldnt make the whiskey sours anymore bc it takes too much time .....AT A BAR??? for the sake of just forcing the evening to move along, I ordered dbl Hendricks, clearly that was not too hard to make. However when my daughter ordered RUM & COKE....Gin and tonic came out, must have have been hard to make that one too. Then in no place, be it online, on their voicemail or anywhere did it indicate they would not offer what is on their menu. The QR CODE for the menu is on the table. SO we chose what we wanted, HOURS later to take the order , we are informed they have 4 options, a Falafel burger, reg burger and chicken burger all of which did not come with the basic fries as a aside, all sides ordered as an add on. To make matters worse when the food actually came out 10:30ish, no plate no cutlery no napkins, EVEN A FOOD TRUCK offers better service. Its obvious a tip was not due as per all of the above. AS A CHERRY on top the bartender got offended over a low tip, asked was there something wrong with the service?!!!!! WHAT service?! follows us outside as we leave b/c he didnt like the answer and wants to FIGHT?!! in 2022 a 40 year old bartender wants to fight over a bad tip. Dont be upset at me because of your station in life. The staff, i will say was overwhelmed. I think 2 years in pandemy and being closed had this local bar, ill prepared for a St. Patricks Day celebration. Better luck next time. Buy a bartender How to Book
Very cozy bar, short menu, with the food being well prepared and tasty.
Played a gig and thought the staff were beyond exceptional.
This a nice little spot near high park, the drinks were good and the burgers were one of the best Ive had in toronto!
Cool spot, good food and drinks, cute patio upstairs
Interior of the place is aesthetically beautiful with earthy colours. Staff here are super friendly, and they have a wide selection of drinks and food. Would come here again.
Steve and the guys are super. Incredible food. Beautifully crafted drinks
Love the vibe of this place, which is much bigger than it looks from the outside. A bit of a ramshackle layout that gives it a legit Irish pub vibe. Decent beer selection beyond Guinness. Only knock against it is there isnt much (hardly anything) for vegetarians to eat.
Great food and atmosphere, I would recommend the steak frites here.
Best jerk chicken Ive had since Jamaica
Great pub with awesome live music on Tuesdays. Staff and patrons are super friendly. Good place to hang out. :)
Burger was decent, but lacked flavour. If you re looking for a burger that showcases beef and nothing else then you ll enjoy. Caesar salad deserves -1 rating. Mayo on lettuce - but somehow without any salt, tang, or flavour. Gross.
Fantastic place. Cute patio up top. Great beer selection but you gotta try the Fried Chicken Sandy...its bonkers good
Great ambiance and amazing service. Unfortunately, I had a bad experience with my food order. The fries were over cooked, and the chicken wings were over sauced with what tasted like franks. It was a huge mess, and was an overwhelming flavour. I would suggest ordering sauce on the side. Something that is uncommon was the fact that the wing tip was still attached to the chicken wings. I don t know what that part is called exactly, but it s inedible and usually removed when preparing chicken wings at a restaurant. It just seems like there was an inexperienced cook on the line, or they were having an off night. Either way, I want to frequent this place because it s just down the street from me and has such lovely vibes, hopefully this was a one-off!
I loved this pub so much I got married here! We had a small ceremony (20 people) on the dreamy back patio and a medium reception (55 people) on the upper floors. Steve and his staff were a dream to work with. I wont get into all the details but it was like working with a proper wedding planning team with the benefit (and cost!) of a casual, cozy pub wedding. Everyone raved about the food and the staff. Its so cliche but it was the best night of my life. These are just some snaps from friends phones. I may update when I get the professional photos.
Meh. Its what you expect.
The servers are incredibly friendly. Its across the street from my condo, Ive gone a few times with my partner and had great experiences. The last few times Ive ordered take out for the steak frites, the fries have been great and plentiful. But Ive asked for rare or medium rare and Ive gotten it fully cooked all the way through with what looks like half the serving or less of steak from what Ive gotten in the past from here. Pretty disappointing with what the price is after taxes and tip. I wont be ordering this anymore and probably frequent less often. Photo was taken about 5 minutes after I received it.
Disappointing food. Good selection of draft beers. Live music some nights.
This is one of my favourite spots in the neighbourhood! The bar is cozy, and the patio is lovely in the summer. The staff are amazing here - everyone is super friendly and they very clearly take pride in what they do. The food is also excellent - the burger is probably my favourite in the city, and the fried chicken sandwich is spectacular! They have a great beer list also - I cannot recommend this place enough!
This ones a personal favourite of mine. Amazing staff, killer food, great atmosphere, they just nailed it all.
Whelan s Gate is wonderful, full of lots of friendly staff, and the food is absolutely delicious! I brought some friends here and they liked it so much it turned into our regular spot!
Such a cute spot, the service is always so friendly, and their food is really good, get the wings!! also they have a really cute patio in the summer
Ive been there for food and drinks a few times and the food has always blown me away. Cozy place and a great rooftop patio.
Cozy Irish pub with good food, ambience and a patio with lush green. Had cider, Guinness and fish and chips. The servers were really attentive and will suggest you about food and drink if you ask them to recommend. Not too crowdy and had a great play list.
Super cozy pub, with a great vibe and secret-like upper patio. Service and food were awesome. Moscow mule kicked a$$ and we were visited by a friendly local kitty :)
The food is amazing. It is better than at most restaurants. A welcome change from a lot of pubs, where the food feel like an afterthought.
Best burger in the city!! Chicken sandwich is also fantastic. Hand cut fries are not to be missed. Staff are welcoming and the bar has everything you would need. My favorite place to meet up with friends in the city
5 stars for the atmosphere and service I really like this little pub I was only up stairs yet I only tried the chips and dip but iam definitely going back to try the steak fritz I seen u few orders and it looked and smells amazing
Big fan of Whelans! The place is cozy and located in a great spot. I appreciate the selection of drinks they offer and if you need advice, the staff are incredibly knowledgeable. Ive ordered a variety of food from the menu and loved it all - always fresh and tastes delightful. Highly recommend the burger if youre looking for a place to start! Theres a variety of events too - Trivia Thursdays are such a fun time.
Went to see a friends band perform here recently. Great bar, good prices, wonderful staff. Really enjoyed hanging out in the back patio area upstairs as well.
Whelans is my favorite spot in the area. Their back rooftop patio is one of the best in the city, and gives a Secret Garden vibe. Their food is fantastic. The menu has evolved and improved since we started frequenting Whelans in 2014, so if you havent tried it in recent years its worth going again. Everything they offer is great, but I particularly like their chicken sandwich and their burger. The chicken sandwich has a delicious sauce, and the chicken has the perfect amount of batter. The burger is simple but high quality, it doesnt need gimmicks and odd toppings to make it good. We get takeout from Whelans frequently, and its well packaged so the food quality stays high. Vegetarian options: The menu at Whelans changes by the season, but theres always at least something vegetarian like falafel or good salads. Kid-friendliness: Whelans is accommodating for kids, but Ive only ever seen them there in the early evening or on off-peak nights. Its not disruptive to anyone who doesnt want to be in environment full of kid sounds.
Quaint pub. Very much enjoyed the ambience and service. The upstairs is quite cozy. Unfortunately, our meals were not great. We both ordered the burger, and both were heavily pink on the inside. The burgers were replaced, but lacked flavour. The fries were alright, nothing special though.
I had lots of fun when we came in for a Thursday evening trivia night. I arrived some time between 6 and 6:30 PM and managed to reserve a table at the back of the 2nd floor common area. It does seem to fill in fast, so anyone wanting to join the trivia game should arrive way early before 7PM. The waiters or servers were all very nice and helpful. I ordered the Falafel Burger and it came with fries. The serving size was a good amount for an individual. The price, however, was a little bit much. I understand that the pricing premium maybe due to all the other entertainment present and provided by the establishment. There was trivia night during Thursdays, and I believe there was also an Irish night announced, and other days when there is some music being played. I was really impressed with the trivia night items and the format. A lot of thought was put into the narrative and overall theming of all the questions. My only complain was that I wished they did not spend too long in between question sets and rounds. The game show started at 7 and finished sometime closer to 9. If it was a Friday, there will be no issue about the ending time; but considering that it was a Thursday evening some people may have work the following day.
Cozy historic joint.
Excellent fish n chips great service.
BEST. BURGER. EVER! When I tell you I CLEANED MY PLATE, you best believe it! Great service, great vibes and overall such a fun time!
The cheeseburger is something to write home about. Guinness is as good as it gets.
I love this place. Cozy, little neighborhood joint with great music, good prices, chill vibes, and perhaps the best burger in town. The staff and owner are down-to-earth folk who have real personalities (withtout even a hint of pretense) and actually provide attentive service. I think *all* of their food is made in-house, too! NOT traditional, previously frozen bar bites. There s board games on hand, weekly trivia night (virtually now that it s the pandemic!), and a great selection of wines considering this is an Irish pub. The patio out back is adorable, too. One of my favourite places in the Junction/Bloor West hood.
Wed 2021 Apr 21 Very disappointed with the order of Buffalo wings and Falafel salad. Probably too much vinegar => Tooth enamel in pain after the 1st bite
The medium rare steak tasted like a shoe but the place looks really nice. Id order something else next time.
Fantastic food, friendly staff - great place!
Just had an amazing patio date dinner with my puppy. The chicken wings are in my top three for sure, the Greek fries sounded like a great idea and they were even better ...never had to ask for salt and pepper, taste was dead on and the staff are very friendly, welcoming and you can tell they care about the establishment...Akoni and i will be back for sure . Thanks guys and see you soon!
The back patio is incredibly cozy, the food was great, and the drinks were cheap. Nothing not to love at this place
Burgers are amazing
Great little bar with lots of character. Lovely patio at the back. Menu was small, but good and well prepared. Had the steak frites and my partner had the burger. Would have both again. Staff friendly and welcoming. I think Ive my new local :)
Cute bar. Good service. Great food. So damn expensive though.
Great drinks, food, and service. A definite step up from standard pub fair in terms of quality of ingredients and cooking.
Great spot with tons of character! You have to get the fried chicken sandwich, it is to die for; perfect size for a filling meal without dragging you down, and deliciously buffalod. If you are into cocktails the staff is super knowledgeable and with only a couple notes will whip you up something tasty. And if you are into bar trivia then head down on Thursdays for some tough tough questions =)
This place was such a pleasant surprise. Great vibes, wonderful drinks, and DELICIOUS home made burger (one of the best I ve had this year). Thank you!
Pretty good food, nice patio
Best bar in the city and also my favorite burger. Staff is awesome and Ive never felt so at home in any other pub Ive been to
Beautiful place, excellent beers and food.
It s got a very cute patio on second floor!
This place is the absolute best. The patio is like sitting in your best friend s backyard, the inside is quaint, the chicken burger is delicious, fries are some of the best in the city, and the service is wonderful. I don t know what more you d need for a bar.
Wings are great as is the smash burger. Kids are welcome.
Awesome food and good service.
Good drinks and ambience
Nice local pub in the High Park area
Great Thursday night trivia with beer specials. Food is excellent too
The fried Chicken Sandwich made my scalp sweat! The vinegar based buffalo sauce, had nice heat and tons of flavor, slaw was on the sandwich as per a proper fried chicken sandwich. Highly recommend!
So hipster it would probably get offended that you called it hipster...Cute little place
Awesome spot! Owner is friendly and they serve a great variety of local beers.
A friend and I hosted a party of 30-40 people here last night. The service was top notch, with the bartender keeping everyones tabs separate and tables clean. I would highly recommend for a birthday party or gathering. Thanks for taking care of us!
Great neighbourhood place, sometimes it smells like cleaning product but that s okay
Honestly just a great local spot. Go there often for their Thursday trivia and its outstanding. Staff and service are solid and pricing is great. $5 Ontario craft tall cans.
Small but delicious menu. Havent found a bad item on it yet.
Awesome intimate atmosphere. Its not an ordinary pub. Great staff!
The perfect pub with a small and real menu.
Good
Good food, very cozy location. The patio is very nice in the spring and summer.
This bar is cute. My buddy rented out the main floor for his bday. The food is really good and there is a good variety of beverages.
Cozy patio at back, great spot for a pint on a hot summer day!
Good food, good service. Will be back.
You just dont find old Irish pubs like this anymore. Talented musicians sitting around a table playing amazing tunes (pre-Covid Tuesdays I think), fantastic atmosphere, delicious beer. Dont let Covid times shape your opinion, this bar is about community. Its been here for ages for a good reason. Also, cozy back patio with a beautiful surrounding garden is nice on a warm summer night.
Been coming here for years. Been awhile and today we went to sit on the patio amd even tho exempt would not walk us to a table without a mask. Very disappointing. Wont be going back. Its sad that people have been so brainwashed to bypass the science and knowledge we have around how immunology biology and masks work and dont work.
Great spot!
I ve never been here but I m glad they told that anti-mask weirdo to kick rocks
The burger is so good I would want it for my last meal. Service is friendly and personal. Beer selection is excellent!
This spot is great for after a walk through High Park. Great food and friendly service. Feels like a community.
An amazing burger and chicken sandwich... I eat here often, so its clearly a go to. Ill miss eating on the patio...but its getting cold. Lets help them get through lockdown #2.
Sweet upstairs back patio. Food is from scratch and yummy and the beverages are tasty too. Update: 3 years later I love these folks even more. The service is always stellar, the takeout during COVID is always from scratch and super delicious as well as reasonably priced. When they had their patio going out front and up top it was a relaxing place to chill with a great selection of taps. Amazing. Please support this great restaurant.
