Mattachioni in Toronto

Have loved Mattachioni for a long time but visited recently and ordered a sandwich to go and was pretty disappointed. I ordered the salmon sandwich which I have had a number of times, but on this last visit there was barely any salmon in my sandwich. It was mostly arugula which I didn t see till I got home and opened it up to put that pepperoncini sauce on it (which has also been minimized to a sad amount). The bread sliced for the sandwiches are also much thinner than they used to be.

Clean and simple pizza flavors with a consistent vibe. The servers were all super friendly, and it was such a chill dining experience. Oh, and don t miss their happy hour! You can get tasty cocktails at a great price totally worth it.

We order from work quite often but I dont think we will agin unfortunately. We ordered 4 sandwiches 4 pizzas and 4 salads and because it was over 200.00 they charge a %20 gratuity. Pretty ridiculous for a pick up order at a 56 dollar tip. You would think that they would be thrilled with larger orders. Its small kitchen but its not like we ordered pizza for 100 people. Until they remove this nonsense we wont be going back which is too bad. I will have to warn my peers who also have photography studios in the area as well.

Delicious food, friendly staff, fast service, no complaints. Had their special pasta and panini options, both were great. Would love to try some of their regular menu items if we were normally closer.

I m obsessed with their lemon olive oil cake and I picked it up just by chance when I saw the glaze glaring at me through the box at the register when picking up a marguerita pizza. I love that they are made fresh there weekly. I think they said mondays is when they make them or fridays. Their pizza is always consistent.

Favourite neighbourhood restaurant. Pizza is amazing, mushroom salad is incredible, and their porchetta sandwich huge and delicious. Family friendly, they are always great with kids. Butter tarts are one of my favourites too.

I dined here for lunch last weekend and waited for more than five minutes to be seated even though there was plenty of seating at 2:30ish. The server looked very strained and overworked. I remember coming here a year ago and there were more servers working. Finally after ordering, the pizzas took very long to come out and were lukewarm. As the cherry on top, near the end of our visit I went to the bathroom and spotted a cockroach behind the toilet Needless to say, I wont be returning and I will be reporting this to public health Toronto.

Foods great, service is fun, atmosphere is a little odd but not anything worth noting because it was still a pleasant experience. You should eat here, its one of those place where I want to return to try the whole menu and, as far as Im concerned, thats what matters.

We ordered a pizza for take out ahead of time with 30 mins to spare. We mentioned the time we would be there according to the gps. However when we came there the pizza was already made sitting there on a silver rack. No effort was made to keep it warm for us. The pizza had already cooled down and the box was cold to touch. Pizza was mediocre at that point.

Very bad customer service, we waited for 20min no body come to serve us. We left because no one come even after 20min they were serving others who come after us.

Walked in for sourdough which is amazing

The first time we visited this restaurant in the summer of 2024, we were so impressed. The food and service were both fantastic. I gave it 5 stars. Our second visit, in the fall of 2024, was such a let down its caused us to question whether well ever return.

I work around the corner and their warm mushroom salad has saved me on many occasions. Their specials always slap. Baked to-go goods immaculate as well.

Fantastic food, rude staff

Ive been coming here for the past 5-7 years & food is consistently on point (great sandos, salads, and their pizza is one of my favs in the city). Sourdough and olive oil cake to-go are amazing. The unexpected star of their desserts is their butter tart. That said, every time I dine in, I leave feeling a bit disappointed and unusually slow (they dont acknowledge you when you walk in often, etc.). Would love for them to re-think a bit how their staff run the resto in the West to really match their great food. Vegetarian options: Plenty of veggie options (salads, sandwiches, and pizzas). Some vegan options. Parking: Park on Dupont (paid) or on the side streets (free)

Finally got the chance to eat here and Im so happy! The pizza is super fresh tasting and light. You CAN eat the whole pizza and not feel super full. I had the Stefano Mistruzzi and the Purple Rain Lavender Lemonade, both superb!!

I really wanted to like this place. I heard good things.. I thought it was very strange that our appetizer came with our dinner, Even though there was ample time. The pizza was just okay. Pizzas are very bland, not enough cheese. Also very stingy with the bread appetizer two slices??

The food was bland and uninspired. Starters were either too spicy or lacked flavour. All the dishes were undersalted. Not at all worth the $250 cost for 4 ppl. Servers were very nice but will not be returning.

Might be the sneaky best pizza in the city pair that with the mushroom salad and a sandwich of your choice. What a combo! One of my 5 star Toronto spots.

Fantastic everything

Probably amongst the best Italian Ive eaten in this city (After famiglia baldassare). Their paninis are just made with the freshest ingredients possible. Id have loved if they had more natural wine options, but maybe its a rotating menu and I might have visited them on a wrong day. But hoping to visit again!

Their bread is amazing and focaccia is pure heaven.

Overpriced in our opinion. Mixed meats dish with olives ,came with 3 olives uner some bread.Pizza was nothing special . About sums the place up, looks good on paper but doesnt deliver. Beer was expensive too.

Super yummy pizza up in here. You can taste the legitness of the flour and the oven in every bite. The salads are also super fantastic. Something with fluffed ricotta was mind blowing. Def coming back.

A server has 2 things they need to do, take the order and deliver the order, actually one more thing, give the order to the kitchen. Our server forgot to place our order and the only other 2 tables in the place were served before us, even though we had ordered before they entered the restaurant. I understand people make mistakes but in this case the server made a half baked and very lame excuse. If she had just apologized that would have been the best thing to do. At any rate this place has so many terrific revues one 1 star wont hurt it but we wont be back. FYI this we was west location friday night...

Alex helped us cater sandwiches for our 1 year old s birthday party. The value for the quality and quantity of the sandwiches was incredible. I am craving one right now. Alex was communicative and patient in answering all the questions I had to ensure we had a great experience which we did. Thank you!!! Highly recommend.

A bustling small cafe with vibrant and busy lunch hours. Pizzas are thin crust with fresh cheese. Nice flavour and fresh toppings. Beef sandwich was tasty but the outer crust of the bread was tough and hard. Overall good service and recommended for quick bites in the area.

Incredible food and service! The only thing that needs to be improved here is the seating. They use very small tables and church benches for seating. Its very difficult to eat comfortably without fearing that your arms are going to knock things off the table.

*update* went back for the mortadella sandwich and it was surreal. Made on fresh, pillowy focaccia with perfectly thinly sliced mortadella, layered 8 deep. Massive portion, ate half, took rest home. The server was very thoughtful and offered pepperoncini sauce to go with. Delicious and such an enjoyable sandwich and service was great. I bought a focaccia to go too* Sourdough bread is fantastic. Go early in the day because they do sell out.. The round seeded sourdough had good heft and weight, a 2pounder for sure. The bread is best cut into thick slices slathered with butter, lol. Came for dinner and my friend and I shared a sandwich, pizza and salad. It was all very fresh and delicious! They offer free sourdough starter to take home and since then Ive been making my own sourdough.

I have come here for years and will continue to come here. The food is always incredible and full of flavour, the staff is always so nice and friendly and we always have a good time here. Shoutout to head chef Gio, he kills it everytime!

Went here to have lunch and meet up with an old friend I hadnt seen in a long time, we ended up staying for many hours and the wait staff didnt pressure us or make us feel unwelcome after a few hours. In fact the service was brilliant. The atmosphere and aesthetic was unpretentious and homey, and the food was good, although only a few vegetarian options Great service tho! Thank you!

the food is pretty good, but the service is very disappointing. very unfriendly and unwelcoming.

We had a party the other night and we ordered 11 pizzas. When I showed up to get them we discovered that I had accidentally ordered from the Gerrard Street location. The staff was very accommodating, and they somehow rallied to make 11 pizzas in 30 minutes for me and my dinner party was not ruined. In addition to this, they didn t give me any hassles whatsoever about not going to pick up or pay for the 11 pizzas at the other location. I thought this was tremendous customer service and I am very impressed with them!

The wait time for a reheated porchetta sandwich was over 45 minutes. I m Italian & know what a porchetta sandwich should taste like, this one was reheated shaved pieces of over-salted pork. The couple next to us got up & walked out since the server was busy at doing nothing. My partner s sandwich was quite good but again it took over 45 minutes to arrive. I always thought that restaurants wanted to get as many customers served as possible not in this place, in some cases they forget you re there. My advice is to hire competent staff who understand the concept of time.

Incredible food

Come for the pizza, stay for a second pizza. The vibe is great, the pizza is great, the salad is also great. Cute neighbourhood spot, intimate, friendly. Good simple cocktails and good service. Also they make great bread and foccacia for take-away.

Now Ive tried a lot of pizza and bad pizza is still good but the care they take from the dough to the proper selection of topplings makes there pizza for me the best in Toronto! A little lacking on atmosphere is the only thing that brings them down slightly. And if there are butter tarts available have one, another cant miss!

Popped in for lunch as we were seeing rentals in the area. Delicious food and staff were accommodating when we were short on time. Would eat here again!

The soup arrived hot but was slow in getting to the table. The grilled cheese sandwich had good bread but was light on filling. Service was fine.

Looks like a friendly little restaurant, which it is, but with amazing food! Excellent quality ingredients, very relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff. Cant wait to go back.

Took a chance on this humble-looking Italian canteen and we were delighted with how that turned out! The bread is just TO DIE FOR. We shared a panini and a pizza and both were excellent, as were the starters. Tip for winter diners: its a bit colder next to the window, so consider sitting in a bit if youre not warmly dressed.

I wished I lived closer to a Mattachioni coz Id eat my every meal at this amazing restaurant. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and my friend and I had a wonderful time. Tried the porchetta, their specials pesto pizza topped with prosciutto and tiramisu. Im a big fan of their peperoncino (hope I spelled this right) Will definitely go back to try their other offerings!

That dough is just so good

Where to even start. Probably one of the places I visit most frequent in Toronto. Sourdough Bread is unrivalled. Pizza is always a 10/10. Coffee in the morning with a sandwich or Pizza and wine in the evening. Staff is super friendly and you can tell they like being there. I will continue to come back time and time again.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto. So far Ive tried from their menu the prosciutto panini (comes with fresh mozzarella, grape tomatoes, arugula, red wine vinegar, and prosciutto crudo on sourdough), the panino salmone affumicato (comes with smoked salmon, mascarpone, lemon, arugula, capers, and pickled red onion on sourdough), and the napoli pizza (comes with tomato, fresh mozzarella, marinated olives, sicilian anchovies, and basil). While the prosciutto panini is my favourite, everything Ive had here tasted absolutely delicious. The portions are large and the ingredients that they use are clearly fresh. All of the staff members that Ive interacted with are incredibly friendly. I intend to come back here many times in the future to try other items on the menu. I highly recommend Mattachioni.

One of the most underrated spots in the city. I swear the porchetta sandwich is one of the best sandwiches Ive ever had in my life. They heat it up under the pizza oven...ugh heavenly. The salads are also AMAZING. The portion size is great - you can share a bunch of things and eat like a king and queen without breaking the bank.

Unfortunately the crew on today at lunch were a bit scattered. The restaurant was not busy when we were seated, but It took a while to place our order of a pizza and a salad, and then a very long time to receive our order...Not entering our meal is a big no no. With four staff on in a small space they should do better. Food was delicious and they comped our beverages which helped.

Best sandwich Ive had in my life. On the pricier side ($15) but it was huge and had the softest freshest bread Ive ever experienced. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for an excellent takeout lunch, and I will certainly be back to try the sit-down dinner foods in the future!

Got four pizzas to go. Tasty, but unfortunately two of them had large holes burnt right through the middle.

My husband and I took my sister here for dinner. We were all very impressed with the quality of the food, and with the staff, who were all really friendly, patient, and super knowledgeable about food! Will definitely be frequenting from now on.

Really delicious pizza! Ingredients are very fresh and you can taste the difference. The Napoli one was my favourite with the anchovy fish. Would revisit if I was in the area. The lavender lemonade was also quite a treat!

Fantastic food: excellent sourdough bread, sandwiches & superlative pizza

I rarely write negative reviews, but I felt it necessary to share my experience at Mattachioni. This place came highly recommended by my friend, so we walked over for lunch. We shared the mushroom salad to start, which was delicious. She ordered the Carlo&Giulia pizza and I ordered the Goldbergio pasta. The pasta had no taste at all. I had to ask the server for salt in order to eat it. Along with that my friend took about 3 bites of her pizza before realizing there was a cheese on it very similar to gorgonzola and she was unable to eat anymore. We were both very unsatisfied with our food, so called the server over to request our bill and take away the uneaten pizza. We also explained our experience with the food and she apologized and gave us the impression they would take care of it . When the bill came it included both the pizza and pasta, which surprised us. We explained the pizza wasn t what was expected, nor did we eat it. The server proceeded to tell us the manager was unwilling to remove it from our bill. On top of that the manager didn t even come over to chat with us about it. My friend and I do not like confrontation, so we quickly paid the bill and left. Needless to say, the food was below pare, and the customer service was more than disappointing. I am still in shock the restaurant was not more accommodating to us. We will not be returning to this restaurant - $75 wasted.

Extremely slow service at lunch hour on a weekday. No explanation from the server on why a sandwich was taking 35 minutes to arrive. Expect to wait a long time for orders. Tasty, large portion sandwiches. Reasonably priced.

Such a quaint Italian spot in a quiet neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. Their insalata burrata was so fresh and the peach pizza, which is their special right now was refreshing and different. There s also a little pantry shopping area for pastas, bread and other cooking items. It does get busy around lunch time so call in to make reservations or just head down a little earlier.

Food is 11/10 - You really need to try one of everything. I highly recommend the butter tarts, Apollonia pizza and bread.

I m a semi-regular patron here, and while, yes, sometimes the service is a bit slower than desired, the staff is always great. We come here for a slower afternoon start or evening, so the pace is perfect. The food though. We stumbled across this establishment during a hunt for a loaf of sourdough and it has been the best we ve ever had (and we ve tried a wide assortment of places). Of course, this translates in their panini offerings and pizza dough. Combined with very fresh tasting ingredients, with the unexpected addition of a more-than-simply-competent baker, you ll find something that delights the tongue no matter what mood you re in.

We buy their sourdough loafs all the time cuz they re great. But we have tried making pizza with their pizza dough 3 times now and it always disintegrates, as if it had no gluten. Does anyone else have this issue? This doesn t happen to us with dough from any other place.

The bread here has to be the best in the city. The pizza dough is so handy!! Tiramisu was awesome!!

Best sourdough in Toronto. Dont sleep on the biscotti either (lemon or Nutella, doesnt matter, theyre both amazing), and the focaccia is like a pillowy cloud.

pizza was tasty and staff were friendly, but the dining experience left a bit to be desired. it seemed like they were understaffed even though its a pretty small place, and if youre sitting in the area near the bar it gets quite crowded when people come in to buy pantry items or pick up takeout. felt a bit hectic. will give it another go sometime at an off-hour :)

Great food and service!

This used to be our go-to pizza place in the neighborhood. Recently, we ordered 3 pizzas for takeout - and they came with more crust than middle (see picture). We contacted Mattachioni and just never heard back. We will be switching to north of Brooklyn as our go-to after this.

I made a $400 order with gratuity in October for pickup. The 2 large salumi in the order were unfortunately 40mins late and despite being the same cost each, only one order came with bread. I reached out to understand what exactly happened and Ive been waiting for a response from Alex Draper-Millan since Nov 7. All I asked was what the large salumi order is supposed to be to understand why only one salumi had bread and why it was late. Im extremely disappointed with the service.

Food: The pizzas are small and they skimp on tomato sauce and cheese. The sourdough bread was good. (2/5) Service: People routinely came in and out picking up takeout and other items. I saw only one server running like a chicken without a head. (1/5) Atmosphere: The dining room smells almost like a dead rat and the tables are reminiscent of middle school cafeteria. (0/5) There are far better pizzeria, bakery in this neighbourhood.

Overrated and overpriced for the quality. Servers were running around here and there even the table was not full. Too busy and very unkind except one new server. So bad.

Absolutely fabulous lunch. We ordered and shared 3 salads and 2 pizzas. Ive never had such delicious food in such an UNPRETENTIOUS location. Sourdough bread was great. Also visited the market at the back. Service was perfect...our server was lovely. Will definitely return and recommend.

Ordered a sandwich for takeout. Took an hour and still waiting. They should be transparent about wait times. Not worth the wait.

Customer service is slow but very friendly. The food when you dine in is always fantastic! I cant say the same for take out. I can order the exact same items and the portions for take out is always smaller and less fresh. I have ordered the prosciutto sandwich for take out multiple times and the size and colour of the meat is super inconsistent.

I am a bit hesitant to write this review because this place is such a hidden gem, and I d like it to stay that way. Relaxed environment and incredible food. Options for vegetarians and vegans. Huge portions, great for family style.

Best place ever!

My sister and her boyfriend took us to this lovely little restaurant last evening. It s intimate - only about 8-10 tables. The menu is simple, some apps, salads, samdwiches and pizza. But the quality is unbeatable. So good, but I forgot to take pictures . I recommend the crostini app - the combo of Gorgonzola, prosciutto, honey and pecans is divine. The salads are large. One salad is a meal, or a very generous app for two. Try the fungi or the cannelloni. I can also strongly recommend the roast beef. The in-house baked sourdough bread is unbeatable. Finally pizza . Their crust is probably the closest I ve had to true neopolitan pizza outside of Naples. Thin, yet bubbly and crispy all at the same time. Finally dessert . Try their panacotta and the butter tarts. Heavenly! Can t wait to go back again!

I cant say enough good things about this restaurant. The food is fantastic and of the highest quality. The warm mushroom salad is a must, as is the beet salad. The pizza, well they are all absolutely delicious. And to top it all off, the service is excellent.

A few weeks ago my partner and I went out for dinner at Mattachioni. The atmosphere was casual and not pretentious, a big yes in my books. Friendly staff; they all smiled and greeted us as soon as we arrived. Right away I noticed that there were quite a few tables placed in its small dining area. Please note, if you want to have a private and intimate conversation; sitting at any of the tables that uses a long bench is not it! Ask to be seated at a table with stand alone chairs. We were seated at one of tables that uses the bench; my elbows were practically touching the lady sitting next to me. It was uncomfortable. To make more room for everyone, I was asked to place my jacket on a hook located at the back of the dining area, quite far from where I was sitting. Im not a big fan of doing this, having had bad experiences in the past with this kind of arrangement (people mistaking my very nondescript jacket for theirs, etc.) I did end up placing my jacket back there though, but held on to my purse (with no place to hang it close to my table, it was on my lap the whole night -- at least it wasnt a big purse) On to the food; we ordered a pizza and salad. The salad was good considering it had some ingredients that are not found fresh anywhere in Ontario this time of the year (i.e. the tomatoes didnt have any flavour.) The salad was big enough to share between two people. It was also supposed to have some type of seafood but these bits were sparse. The pizza had a thin crust, and was a bit too well-done. I looked underneath it and half of it was burnt-- OK, thats a bit more than well-done! I didnt want to ask for it to be taken back because Im shy, and by that point we had eaten the other half already (the part that wasnt burnt.) Generally though, the pizza tasted good, too bad about the burnt parts. The dessert: really amazing! Best cannelloni Ive had in Toronto. :D To summarize: The menu is simple a back-to-basics type of thing, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is casual. Too bad the food was just OK. Again, the sitting arrangement could use less tables for a lot more comfort and privacy for dinner guests. I personally would try other places before going back there, but I would go back to see if the second time is better. :)

Always high quality food for good prices. Great to pick up a few treats for your pantry like their pepperoncini

The flood was excellent, the prices were reasonable for the quality and the staff and service were excellent. Do yourself a favour and head down to this place for an afternoon and enjoy yourself
