Taro ice cream was fantastic

4.5 star: Food was fabulous. Service was friendly, however it seems that we always had to call for water top ups and drink orders. The music overall atmosphere was nice.

I really enjoyed the food here but I dont recommend going here. My wife and I went with another couple and we left because they kicked us out after just over an hour. To be fair, we were 10 minutes late for the reservation. The waiter was pleasant enough (quiet but not rude) until an hour into eating he tells us we have to leave in 15 min for another reservation. We asked if we could stay longer. We wanted to order another 100 dollar of sake and more food. Nope. They needed the space. We werent going to fight. I dont need to spend more money at a place that doesnt want me to eat there. Our bill came to over $360 which we expected with wine. What we didnt expect is to be asked to leave. We werent loud, rude or causing problems. We were finishing up our food and talking, when the eaiter again, very rudely this time tells again we have to leave in 10 minutes. What puzzled me was that when we left, there were two empty tables of four. The reservation they were concerned about didnt even show. If I was the owner, Id be concerned about who is making these decisions on the fly. It is costing them money. And I can guarantee this isnt the first time this has happened to somebody. I would like to come back but I wont with how they handled these issues. Customer service is seemingly non-existent. I wish this restaurant the best and hope they figure things out.

I called to reserved a table today, and there was only counter tables, and when I got there, someone was taken it and the same server in the call told me in face: first come first serve with bad attitude just like in the call. I strongly recommend to fire that server, such bad experience

There was a FLYING INSECT on the miso soup, it was so DISGUSTING but the server never say sorry to me and she was so RUDE. She was not surprised at all and just told me that I will bring another one and took the miso soup like it s not a big deal. It seems like this happens often. and she didn t even add spring onions on my second miso soup. Also the Fisherman s Kaisendon I ordered was NOT FRESH especially the cooked shrimp was really bad. It was very fishy, tasted like stayed in a freezer for a long time. The red tuna was not fresh either. I assume that s why they put sliced lemon on the cooked shrimp to cover the fishy smell. If she said Sorry to me at the time, I would not leave the one star review even if the food was bad. Because I was satisfied with the Negitoro Hotate don for the first visit. Anyways, I will never go back there again. The owner should train their servers how to deal with customers

Very authentic ! Best salmon don I have ever had in Canada ! Japanese server was super nice and chill too !

Finally tried this place and I wasn t disappointed. I tried the platter, tofu with kimchi and the rice bowl with salmon. Everything was delicious and service was great. Definitely recommend the platter as you can try a little bit of everything. Will definitely come back to try the other items on the menu!

We both had the Kingyo Makunouchi Platter. It was a great selection and all the food was fresh and very tasteful. The service was very attentive and it was great to browse the supermarket while waiting for our food.

Epic and Authentic Japanese Experience

Probably my favorite sushi in the city!

Went to this location through a recommendation and it did not disappoint. Food tasted wonderful and the drinks were very creative

Food is okay, but you can either pay the predefined tip rates (which includes tax into the calculation) or nothing, that is very bad.

Overhyped. 90$ meal. One platter. One salmon don. One beer 9$ sapporo. Food was decent. 4 stars. Nothing special. Tiny portions. If you are a big man you will need 2 meals to get full. Service. Maybe they are tired and it is end of the day. But feel zero attention and lack of hospitality. Didn t pay attention. Practically didn t hear us. Plates, cups are dirty. Water is warm. Chopsticks and wooden spoons - maybe add to the mood but not a clean feel. Shop looks neat but place is too small and crowded. Overall v mediocre experience. You can eat better for almost 100$ It was the first time. And the last time. Do not recommend.

A hidden gem in the old Cabbagetown. The Negi Maguro Hotate Don was gorgeous. The Maguro was fresh and sweet...

Highly recommend the two kinds of fish (Yuzu miso salmon cheek and belly & black cod)! (Very fatty and the Yuzu miso sauce is excellent - wanted more of it). Generous portion sizes for food. Their torched hotate and negitoro don is also delicious (soy sauce to your taste & the good wasabi - tastes authentic), and came with a delicious tonjiru soup. Their house made fresh ginger ale is very refreshing. Seafood tartare was good (especially with 3 kinds of tobiko and avocado), though the garlic shokupan it came with was great on its own. Note that some kinds of a la carte sashimi may not be available at times. It gets very busy as the evening progresses on Friday and weekends, so be sure to make a reservation. If waiting or interested, theres also a market/shopping section for Japanese treats, small take home meals, sashimi, drinks, frozen food (ramen, seafood, etc), dining ware, and seasonings.

food was good but the price point is quite high for the amount of fish to rice ratio for the rolls and the bowl. don t get me wrong, they tasted good but not sure if it s worth the price point. we had a good time and the service was great :) all of the staff were lovely. the seating time was perfect (1h30min) as we were finishing up right on the cusp of our time. we had the monthly special sake- i can t remember the name of it but it had citrus notes and was the 1st option of the two bottles. it was very sweet and not very cold- so maybe ask for extra ice if you like sweet sake. we didn t end up finishing it but it was still good, just a bit sweeter than we thought. we had the marinated kaisen don which was tasty (but maybe not worth the price point?) it was nice to share and try each sashimi together as it came with 2x of each; salmon, tuna, sea bream and scallop. the scallop was lovely and the sea bream also stood out. we are salmon lovers too so we ll always love that. the tamago in the rice was a great touch- i loved it. we also got the torched salmon and the ikura salmon roll. both were delicious. the torched was my favourite however, as it was melt in the mouth. we ended up ordering delivery at around 10pm though since we got hungry again but i do think that is due to the rice (carb) to fish (protein) ratio since we were stuffed at the restaurant and couldn t finish all the rice. it the food was a bit more reasonably priced or had a bit more fish to rice ratio the food would get 4 the atmosphere was beautiful in appearance but the tables were uncomfortably close. when people had to pass by they would brush the table, it would be better to have 1 less table in the line of seated tables for slightly more comfort at this level of priced dining. it felt like a fast food ramen restaurant with how cramped it was, everyone was just slightly too close for comfort- which again, would be alright if the price point reflected that but it is a bit of a higher end style sushi resto. 2 the servers were clear about our seating time and we stayed within it so we did not feel rushed. they were incredibly kind, sweet and efficient. lovely s experience with them: 5 tldr; it felt like higher mid ranged sushi priced at lower high end prices, staff were lovely, atmosphere is not great for the price point of dining they are trying to achieve. we had a good experience, im not saying we didn t but it wasn t amazing or anything extraordinary from what i d read and heard

The fresh seafood tartare is something we keep coming back for! Definitely an amazing spot to grab a lunch and explore Cabbagetown!

No Air conditioning, 2 hours of long wait for food as the server forgot about our order, Not great experience.

It doesn t have AC and it was extremely hot. Waited 2 hours for food, they forgot our order. Food was not great.

Got a take out fisherman kaisen don($50 after tax). Had 6 - 7 different types of thick and fresh sashimi. Slightly pricy but great quality and delicious. Would visit again and try their other dons

Probably my favorite Japanese restaurant in Toronto. I love the food in the restaurant (not so much in the Bento section). Service has been awesome (had a small issue with the food one time and they gave a very satisfying response). I also really enjoyed the market section. You can find lots of great Japanese condiments and food there. Limited seats.

Food was good but a bit pricey

A very homie Japanese restaurant/market with a 90s vibe. Food was great! Especially the kids meal! Kid-friendliness: They have high-chair and kids friendly cutlery. A very high quality kid s bento box and the servers even gave my son a little toy.

One of my best restaurants in Canada! I took the platter and everything on it was great. The tiramisu was delicate and tasteful. The decor looks unique. The service was perfect. The shop inside is a bonus. Also they have Japanese washrooms... A real gem!

Although this restaurant is on the pricier side, its definitely worth visiting at least once, especially for seafood lovers. My friends ordered the Kingyo Makunouchi platter, which comes with 12 different tasting dishes, and the Sea Urchin Bibimbap. I chose the Vegan Tantan Ramen, and although it was slightly saltier than what I personally perfer, it was still delicious. It was creamy and filling, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. I also tried the Kingyo Dead Chicken Karage from their rotating features menu. This was hands down the best karage Ive tried anywhere so far. Incrediblely moist and flavourful, without any of that fried heaviness you get at some places.

There was mold on the strawberries in the dessert. Besides that, the dishes are too minimalistic - an egg wrap with just rice? Seriously? But thats fine, I wouldnt give a bad review just because of that, but mold is definitely unacceptable.

Discriminating service. My wife and I got there first but the male server seated other group of women who came after us. Then he assigned a large table to us when there was a small table for 2 available. We asked if the platter is enough for 2 people and the female server said no. So we ordered another dish. Turns out the platter is enough for 2 people. Bad experience all around.

There isn t many sushi spots in Toronto that has great quality fish but this place definitely on the top list. Highly recommend checking out if you appreciate good quality fish like I do.

The marinated kaisen bowl here is outstanding, with fresh sashimi and perfectly marinated rice that enhances the flavors. The scallops, in particular, stood out as incredibly delicate and buttery. The addition of tobiko and fresh seaweed added great texture. While slightly pricey, the quality of the ingredients makes it worth it. Portions are generous and satisfying. Highly recommend for sashimi lovers, especially those who appreciate premium scallops.

Came here for a snack had the salmon aburi! A little loosely packed but so delicious. I loved that they used a fatty part of the salmon and barbecue flavor. Total bonus that they had our favourite Japanese drink!

Average for raw food and below average for cooked. Not as good as restaurant bearing the same name in Vancouver. However, these days, for the low price, one cannot expect above average quality.

The food was ok (would give the restaurant 3/5 but gave another star because their market in the restaurant is stellar!). Maybe we ordered the wrong items but from the 6 dishes we ordered only 2 of them was something we found decent. The drinks on the other hand were great!

Unassuming place with bar and restaurant seating area. The restaurant can get really hot! There s also a grocery / shop area as well. The staff were attentive and dishes came out reasonably quickly. The sushi was also a bit fragile and doesn t hold well. The food is well presented and almost everything else we ate was good, from the tasting platter (has 13 different items to try) to the ebimayo (recommend), the tartar and tataki. The beef tsukiyaki was refreshing and clean. Some of the food was and some dishes were really salty (the tan tan ramen, miso soup) or a bit bland (pressed and torched sushi). The salmon lover don was really filling and was pretty good. Overall, it wasn t as good as I remember it, but still a pretty good spot in the city for Japanese food.

Strong 4.5/5. Portions are relatively big so would recommend maybe 3 dishes for two peeps. We ordered one lobster udon, one Kaisen don, one salmon ikura sushi and one 12 item platter - we were super stuffed. We still wanted to try the pudding dessert and it was as good as expected. The seasoning is a bit salty for the platter as well as the udon so I had to drink a lot to water it down. Staff are very friendly and the tea is the prettiest tea I have seen :)

I had the karaage don (which includes a small side dish and miso soup). It s much lighter than I expected and easy on the palate. The miso soup is chock full of goodies. A hint of burdock and there are plenty of daikon radish and lotus root floating around. I also ordered the parfait, which is probably a two-person dessert in hindsight, especially after a proper meal set. Nevertheless, the strawberries are fresh, the flan/pudding is homemade and the cornflakes adds texture to the dish. The service is top notch and attentive. The waitress noticed that I was prepping to leave and swiftly came with the bill and machine, wasting no time at all. Overall, great restaurant! I enjoyed my time here.

If you come here, you have to get the platter. It s well worth the money. Every item taste fantastic and what a tasty experience to have all these selection you can nibble on at the same time. Im definitely coming back for this.

If possible I d order (almost) everything on the menu. First time visit and I m pleased with my every order. First the Blooming jasmine tea (yes it s delulu of me on a hot summer day but) blew me away. It is fascinating to witness the jasmine slowly rehydrates in hot water and descends from atop to the bottom. Let the water cool slowly so you get to witness the picturesque full bloom under water. Agedashi tofu and pressed Saba (mackerel) sushi are both excellent with modern twists. The tofu is seasoned with spices and lightly heated (spiciness). Pressed Saba sushi is uniquely dressed with flying fish roe, green onion, persimmon leaves, and seasoning dressing. Will return with friends and family. Reservation recommended for large parties.

This place is a nice little gem and has amazing food! Don t know why there s not more hype around this resto. We ordered the torched hotate negitoro don and the tasting platter (Makunouchi platter). Both dishes were so fresh and amazing. Considering the quality, i was surprised how affordable the dishes were. The hotate negitoro don had a generous amount of seafood and was very fresh! The tasting platter had a good variety of different items. Everything was well executed however nothing blew me away but having the variety was nice. The service was also very friendly and fast. Would still recommend both dishes however! They have a small supermarket in the back where you can buy Japanese snacks, condiments, alcohol, pre prepared meals and frozen ramen!

I really wanted to love this place but fundamentally this is B sushi pretending to be A- sushi. Great decor and vibes, nice presentation, cool menu. Feels super authentic. Just wish the sushi were either a bit cheaper or sourced better. You can get cheaper and better dons in the downtown core - Jabistro (much better) or Zen Kyoto (cheaper and probably better) come to mind. Ramen was solid and maybe the non-fish dishes are the move. But they called it a Fishermans Market. The market section is super cute and good variety but priced more aggressively than Sanko.

I would never ever come back here again for the sushi. Point blank, it was the worst I have ever had in my life. The salt level was off the charts to the point where I tossed half of it in the garbage after paying $$$ for it. I also was shocked to find that they gatekeep the wasabi and ginger to where just a few slices would cost you $0.50 even if you have spent $$$$ (I was feeding 6 adults, to give you an idea). What kind of establishment does this? The only saving grace was the supermarket. You can buy things there like puddings, homewares, skincare items, or frozen things to bring home. But I would 100% avoid eating here. The hype and all these fake reviews are not worth it.

One of the best sushi restaurants in town. Fresh and authentic.

What a scam! If you are an ant, this place is a feast for you. The portion size here is incredibly small and its super expensive. Is the food worth it? No, its probably 30% worth the money you pay for. Youre looking at spending at least $80 per person for a decently filling meal. And moreover, there is no custom tipping option. You either pay 0 tip or you pay at least 15%.

I dont even know how long Ive had this place saved on my Want to go list Im so glad I got to try it with my friends, bc we were able to share two sampling platters plus two pressed sushi. We probably couldve done without the pressed sushi, as we were all way too full at the end, but people with larger appetites will find this good enough. Overall the food was just so delicious and fresh. I cant believe they give hotate sashimi as part of the sashimi sample (scallops are my all time fave). I also recommend the torched pressed sushi. Both saba and salmon were delicious, but because they put soya sauce in it already, they were hard to pick up and were disintegrating on the board . I definitely recommend making a reservation. Our group goofed and accidentally made a reso for the next day, so when we arrived we had to wait over 45 minutes lol, and we were seated at the narrow bar which was kind of hard for 4 people, but still the food made it worth it. Apart from the resto itself, they have a small market/grocery store that offers things from beauty and hair products to snacks and frozen ramen and sake. This was the first place Ive seen selling Kaki no tane, so they have a lot of some of the rarer Japanese items that you might not see stocked at the typical Asian supermarkets (but they might have at J-town)

The best sushi Ive had in Toronto! They charge premium prices justified by the high quality of their fish. Their tasting platter was fun to try and their dons were truly delicious. The decor is cute and their market has all sorts of fresh seafood, snacks, and drinks.

I went to the market three days ago, and bought some snacks and beverages, in total six items. But when I open it today, I suddenly found that three of them are expired (half of the goods I purchased are expired). And it s already expired one month I m really disappointed about this market, hope you can give me appropriate feedback. Thank you.

Very nice

Kingyo sampler was an easy and great choice. Broth was incredibly earthy and full of umami. Everything was beautifully presented and the sampler was enough for two people. The store also has unique candy picks that I miss from my childhood. Definitely coming back for the small gems and exploring more of the menu

We got the vegan tantan ramen, the karaage chiken and the deep fried tofu with kimchi and every dish was delicious! Also their home made beer was amazing! This place is a hidden gem in Toronto. Food : 5/5

Very cool concept of a small Japanese market combined with a restaurant. Their fish is great quality considering the very reasonable prices. This is pretty authentic Japanese food. You ll see some menu items you won t see at lower end Japanese restaurants - I.e. the tasting platter, which was fantastic. You get such an incredible mix of textures and flavours and you ll probably get to try at least a few items you won t see at any other Japanese restaurant in Toronto. The tonkatsu set is quite authentic, all the way down to the crushed sesame seeds. It was also really nice to see that the accompanying miso soup wasn t the basic variety and came loaded with ingredients.

Such good food!!! They have a gluten free menu too!! Cutest little market/restaurant. Kid friendly and very reasonably priced. They were very accommodating with our party and arranging the table to fit our baby stroller. Freshest sashimi Ive ever had. Other people in our party really enjoyed the tempura shrimp appetizer. Nice experience, definitely worth it

Honestly, this place is a hidden gem! On my second visit, and guess what? The food and service are still flawless.

This is such a hidden gem in the city! Located in a not so busy neighborhood with very small signs on the outside, this restaurant is definitely worth trying out if you are a fan of fresh sashimi. The portion is great, slightly expensive but very worth given the freshness of the seafood. I ordered the salmon lover, it came with both fresh and torched salmon sashimi, topped on rice and avocados. Amazing texture and super flavourful. Also have a small market inside the store where you can buy $4 handroll sushi and varieties of Japanese drinks and snacks.

Very close to the real thing. The fish is fresh, the dishes are tasty. Appetizers are great. Servers are all nice. The toilet is very authentic here. The gift store is really fun and priced fairly. Kingyo is a great spot for friends and lovers alike.

I Loved the tasting platter. First of all, considering the quality of all the dishes, it is really cheap. None of these got me disappointed. Each dishes had a bit of Japanese touch to it, and those small details made the plate even more flavorful. I was fully satisfied with the flavor and portion. There are more dishes to try, and I m so excited to come back for another meal.

Used to order here every week but they recently increased their prices AND decreased their portions. The negitoro and marinated kaisen are tiny now and prices went up as well. Make it make sense.

After the renovations, this restaurant came back even better and with more delicious items than before! I really appreciate the effort they put into the new menu. You know, sometimes simplicity is key quality over quantity, right? The platter and poke bowl are still absolutely top-notch. Yeah, they might be a tad pricey, but its clear that they are using top-notch ingredients. Just a friendly reminder to the management: Dont cut corners! Us loyal customers can always tell ;)

Ordered an obscene amount of food and everything was great. The surprise was the tartare starter which was ridiculously good and I would recommend to anyone and everyone. Will 100% go back to try anything else I missed (such as dessert)

Fish is not fatty enough like toro, as well as the texture is not tender enough.

Love the interior decoration of this place! Very retro and fun. I got their specialty of the day - ocean udon, and it s amazing. Both quality and portion exceeded my expectations. I also got a yuzu tea drink that was refreshing as well. Definitely visit this market if you can!

Always consistent. Ive been dining at Kingyo for years. The ebi mayo and chicken karaage are especially recommended. Great service and atmosphere. A real gem in Cabbagetown.

The food is super tasty and reasonably priced for the quality. The grocery store is also super cute and the decor gives a nice Japanese retro vibe.

Edited because apparently kingyo needs more info. Went for dinner on January 28 at 6:30pm. Sat alongside the wall on the same side as the front door (not sure how much more specific I could be here). Ordered salmon lover don and marinated kaisen don. Fish was fresh, a good amount of rice in the bowl. My issue isn t so much with the bowl, but rather the service. The waitress tried to clear our table twice too early. The first time, clearly there s still half the miso soup in the bowl, but she tried to take it away while we were still eating. There was no lineup or anything. We ate everything and left within 45 minutes. Please stop rushing your customers so necessarily. Food and experience was not really all that spectacular. Would not return

Food is delicious, and staff is welcoming. I m not sure I like the market, I saw very few people actually buying from it.

We ve been here a bunch of times because we love the food and atmosphere. We have a baby now and the restaurant accommodates families with high chairs which is great! However, I m giving a three star because I was disappointed and surprised they didn t have a change table in the bathroom. We needed one and it made our experience stressful with baby. Kingyo please provide one for all the families coming in. Thank you.

I went to the store today to pick up tgtg. The surprise bag is really surprise me with one expired drink and one package cookie expired as well.The value for both less than $5. One piece of cake not sure how fresh it is. This is not the whole idea of tgtg to give people garbage.

Pretty cool hybrid space, the food and service is great I enjoyed the deep fried corn and brussels sprouts the flavour it something to like, salmon lover was also fresh and delicious but the star of the night for me was the earl grey hazelnut tart not only beautiful but taste amazing and creamy Food

Delicious dinner. Very fresh fish and the bento tray was very good value and had unique dishes. Not pictured but was very well made and tasty was the torched salmon sushi. Highly recommend to visit this restaurant.

The price of their fish sashimi in the little market is a lot more higher than usual sashimi fish market like yuzuki & taro s, but they carry more lovely Japanese stuffs than those two. Eg, ~ $20 for salmon/scallop per unit while yuzuki & taros usually cost ~10 for same amount. Not sure about their freshness but, their prices are the same with dine in restaurants

Got the course for 2 and what a trip it takes you on. Different textures, flavours, temperatures, and presentations. I ll admit we didn t love every dish but glad we tried it for the first time. The fish was very fresh though! A perfect date night spot or special occasion.

Amazing quality, whether you are taking out or dining in. Presentation is great. Usually go into the store just to browse, but always end up buying something :) they usually have new snacks all the time

The kingyo makunouchi platter was phenomenal, lots of thought and care put into each little dish (we were 4 people and it was really fun to split two of these platters as appetizers for the table). The deluxe maguro fisherman bowl is decadent and the fatty tuna belly melts in your mouth. The pressed sushi options were also excellent! Ginger highball drink was delicious, plus they have a great beer selection (try the hitachino white ale, super tasty)! I ve spent a decent amount of time in Japan and this restaurant really impressed me, will be back to try more of your dishes!

Overall is good the food tastes delicious and fresh. The service could be better, like checking up on us a bit more often and come by to pour us drinks instead of us asking for water and cutleries.

Really enjoyed the sampling menu. The assorted sashimi was one of the best items in my opinion but enjoyed all other plates that came along. The additional market space is the cherry on top. Especially the Japanese craft beers! Highly recommend this place.

Loved their food and presentation. Service was great and the servers were very welcoming. Especially the lady server was so kind and helpful. All the dishes had such detailed touches. Especially the toro and scallops don was great! One thing that bothered our group (11) was the smell of the marijuana/weed. The smell kept coming from somewhere and when i asked about it to the server she suspected the weed shop near by.. a very unfortunate situation for the restaurant. Hopefully something will be done about this. We had a pregnant friend in our group and her husband seemed to be a bit worried. And yes i was too :( and myself also hate weed smell..

Such a terrible service! We had reservation and arrived on time. first the server did not lead us to the seat, and when we were seated, we waited at least 15min. NOBODY was coming over and taking our orders! I had to go to bar counter to ask a server to take orders. And she only give me a head nod. We waited another 10min. Still NO ONE came over!! We chose to left this terrible place!

Started our meal off with the sampler platter! Nice to have a bit of everything on the appetizer on the menu! The Hamachi Grilled Kama cheek was delicious! I wouldnt have minded some extra seasoning salt on the side for the pieces outside of the teriyaki soy sauce and lemon. Last the Torched Hotate and Tuna don was delicious! Having the the scallop torched changed the texture of the scallop. In my opinion, I would have prefered it not torched. Overall experience was very nice!

Had a delightful dining experience here, particularly impressed by the fresh and tasty seafood selection that truly stood out. The ginger highball cocktail was a highlight, boasting a strong ginger flavor that I personally love. Service was friendly and attentive, making the meal even more enjoyable. However, its worth noting that the seating space is somewhat limited, and tables are quite close to each other, which might not appeal to everyone.

Good experience! Their bowl tasted amazing with fresh otoro. I didnt even taste or smell any fishy. I love the platter since we have everything a little bit to try! The server was really nice, he refilled our water quickly. The restaurant also has a small Japanese convenient shop selling snacks, skincare, and much more Highly recommend their bowl series! My gf tried beef shukiyaki and it was so so. But the fish bowl is absolutely a must try.

Very special place indeed that doubles as a Japanese delicatessen and shop.

Extremely fresh sashimi, great food. Very unique Japanese restaurant. And the atmosphere is great. The supermarket offer variety of products, coolest one in my opinion is the pre-cooked ramen. I would personally recommend the uni, one of best I have found in Toronto. Parking: Parking could be problematic during busy hours, you can park on the road just fine if it is not too busy.

UPDATE The restaurant gave a generic response without clarifying their seating policy. This lack of transparency leads me to conclude that no such policy exists, and the server was just trying to kick us out. 1 start deserved. -- What happened -- We arrived at 5:30 PM on March 8th, everything went well until 6:50 PM when a male server told us to leave at 7:00 because our table is reserved by another group. We still had 3 dishes untouched on the table. Nobody mentioned a time limit when we sat down. At 7:00, hes back with takeout boxes and our bill super rushed. I didnt argue because my friend wife is pregnant, but definitely annoyed. The first time payment didnt went through because it exceeds tap limit. When he saw me didnt gave any tip, he then mentioned that he had spoken to the manager and offered us an alternative table until 7:30 PM. Still left no tip after that generosity. -- Some of my thoughts -- The first possibility is that the restaurant has a 90-minute seating policy we werent made aware of. Normally, wed expect to be informed about such policies upon arrival, sometimes a heads-up on any last call for food orders. Its also possible that there wasnt any seating policy in place, and we were just the unlucky table chosen by our server to be asked to leave. Regardless, the lack of communication from the staff about their policies is unacceptable, especially for a place costing $100 per person. -- Result -- Ill post an update here if the restaurant reaches out to me. Im hoping they will, if they truly value their business

Kingyo has quality food AND grocery items. You can find unique Japanese snacks and some of Tsuchi Cafe items as well. It s a nice restaurant/grocery store I like to visit Food

Such a wonderful experience stopping by Kingyo Fisherman s Market for a weekday lunch. We didn t have reservations and were lucky enough to be the only ones at the store when we visited, but cant wait to go back! Delicious, fresh fish (get the platter!). Impeccable service and care.

Decent food but a bit underwhelming. Quite expensive for the quality and portions. The vibe felt a bit gimmicky. Some of the ingredients on the dishes were not mentioned on the menu. Enjoyed the spicy tuna maki, but wouldnt order some of the other dishes again. Karaage was mid..

Absolutely love this place. Great food that felt like I was back in Japan. The presentation is great and food tasted fantastic. Only wish they had a couple more vegetarian items or listed items that can be made vegetarian because its hard to convince my spouse to come when there is only one item on the menu that she can eat. In any case its so worth the trip out. The platter was worth it!

We always enjoyed dining at Kingyo pre-Covid. They have since reopened with a market area and a seating area. We were tempted by the special menu for 2, but decided to order a la carte. The grilled yellowtail cheek/collar was delicious, extremely tender. We also enjoyed the Kingyo 12 item Platter, spicy Negitoro pressed sushi, Porkloin cutlet and Sea urchin bibimbap. Visited Kingyo as one of the top Japanese restaurants in the city. The restaurant is a unique hybrid restaurant and market, where you can order food and purchase imported Japanese goods at the same time. The atmosphere has elements of Japanese culture such as pachinko machines mounted on the walls as displays and showing old Japanese commercials on a projection. The Makunouchi Platter is one of the best offerings, with 12 different tasting dishes and is the best way to experience the various flavours of Japanese food. The platter changes daily so each day has a different mix, but is representative of the dishes offered on menu. The restaurant also has offers various sushi, sashimi and various rice (donburi) and noodle dishes. For the market, they sell a mix of imported Japanese goods and prepared food from the restaurant. Best to go when they have discounts on their prepared food which is later in the day. Overall, it s a recommended visit as one of the more highly rated Japanese restaurants in the city.

Got the salmon lovers bowl and got food poisoning the next day. It got so bad I to go to the hospital. Will never be dining here again.

They are a Japanese restaurant/market where you can grab fresh food and also Japanese takeaway or local goodies. Very fresh sashimi and tasty salad dressing. I grabbed 2 packs of frozen ramen on the way out to try at home (Garlic Shoyu and Tan Tan) and they were both very delicious! Highly recommended :)

Food here is amazing- we got the winterlicious menu as well as karaage and a salmon lovers entree. Service was a bit slow- forgot to fill water until the very end- but other than that a wonderful night :)

came for the unagi don and was pleasantly surprised that they actually had an unagi hitsumabushi on special. Great food and flavour, will need to try more of the menu before its a 5/5 for me.

The service here is probably the worst i ve seen in years. The food is good, but not great and definitely not worth the rude experience. The hostess is the most unpleasant and unprofessional worker, she purposefully ignored us twice when we waited at the front and tried to get her attention. The waittress initially tried to seat us after we came early for our reservation, but her coworker (the hostess) stopped her and told us the table wasn t ready yet but they were eating dessert and finishing up. 40 minutes later, she came by and said the same thing to us. Even during dinner, we asked for the dessert menu and she either forgot or didn t cqre to get us one. She was openly scolding the waittress too, and just seemed to be an overall unhappy person. I wouldn t recommend this place to anyone. The waittress with the bangs was the only polite one there.

My third time visiting the new Kingyo and it never disappoints. I came on a Monday and it was pretty busy. Luckily we had a reservation for 4, so didnt have to wait. Service is consistently good and my glass of water was always full. I usually get something with fish, but I was feeling adventurous and ordered the pork tan tan ramen. I didnt expect much, but it was really good! Its definitely top 3 in the city in my books. Ive also tried the uni cream udon, fishermans kaisen don and salmon pressed sushi. Everything on the menu is solid. Highly recommend trying the Kingyo Makunouchi platter so get to sample all the apps and always down to come back.

One of the more underrated Japanese spots in Toronto ever since they renovated. They have a store where you can buy Japanese imported goodies. In terms of food, their sampler appetizers is a great way to try a bunch of appetizers. Their sushi rolls especially the torched salmon one was delicious. Also ordered a ramen which was surprisingly very close to flavors from Japan. Would recommend making reservations as it could be busy.

Great place for authentic Japanese food! We ordered their appetizer platter and were soooo happy with the choice! I can t recommend their shrimp tempura (ebi mayo) enough, best I ve ever had! The fish bowls were both amazingly fresh and perfectly flavoured, highly recommend this place. Their seating is limited so having a reservation would be helpful.

I got the Salmon Lovers Don which was $27 before tax. It was delicious for sure, the rice was perfect and the salmon was fatty. You would definitely be paying for the quality here

Loved our experience here. Servers were very nice and friendly. We strut thinking wet had a reservation but for some reason, the booking was not made. But they were quick to offer us the bar area and did not make us wait. Good service for sure. Food was fresh and had enough variety, from classics to more creative fares. Worth a try. Also don t forget to check out their grocery section. We bought some frozen ramen and they too were very good.

Return the first time after they changed to market style. I am glad that they still keep 1/3 of the space for dine-in. We ordered their tasting menu. Seafood is fresh and great service!

Kingyo always slaps! Their don bowls are amazing, and the sashimi salad is to die for (it s topped with jello ponzu?! Sounds weird but it s super tasty). The waitresses are always really sweet, and you can grab a drink or Japanese snacks at the market that s attached! The prices are pretty reasonable for what you get.

I loved Kingyo before it became refurbished -customer since I d say around 2017! Here s what I liked: the matcha crème brûlée, karaage, frozen ramen Here s what not to order: the sushi, I bought a party tray of assorted sushi and it was the worst and costly decision ever. My friend and I had to dump most of it because the taste was like too « earthly », it was like they used leftovers of what didn t sell. I m glad they added this fisherman s market and I get the frozen ramen all the time. Everything else is overpriced and u can buy cheaper items in Spadina, even the sashimi

Nice gem hidden in a neighborhood not expected to find such a satisfying Japanese dining experience. Went here for early dinner and ordered the chef choice plate which includes a wide variety of small dishes most of which hit the right notes for me. I especially like the torched searched fish and another fish that texture is somewhat more solid like nothing I tried before. Their shrimp and karage are good if you are into fried stuff. Their sizzling tofu is not something available at most Japanese restaurants and is a good mixture of soft and Krispy with deep flavours. Their pork ramen is solid with tasty broth, well seasoned meats and noodles that are near perfect.

Authentic Japanese Seafood Restaurant/Shop with fish flown in from Japan available at Market Price. I dined here with a group of 8 during lunch time on a weekday. Ambiance is reminiscent of an older era in Japan, maybe close to a fishing village of some sort. The restaurant truly is a hidden gem (And I hope to gatekeep but I guess I cant) We ordered a variety of sushi on the menu (SPICY NEGITORO PRESSED SUSHI, TORCHED SALMON PRESSED SUSHI, TORCHED SABA PRESSED SUSHI, SALMON IKURA PRESSED SUSHI) Also did some chicken karaage, the steamed egg custard, the sizzling agadashi tofu, and the beef shabu shabu. Food did not disappoint. Quality was fresh and the care and presentation given into each dish is definitely noteworthy. Service was exceptional, hostesses were attentive and ensured each person got what they wanted/needed. Some folks were still hungry and we ended up getting some of their dons and katsus... and those also did not disappoint. The quality of fish and ingredients at this shop is insane to say the least. Street parking available.. Come here and be ready to eat if you want a taste as close to fresh as you can without paying omakase pricing.

Service is attentive and friendly. The food is fine, but not particularly remarkable. Good variety of dishes not typically found in so-called Japanese restaurants. The food here is obviously authentic and prepared with care. The fried chicken is a tad dry though, and the katsu pork can be a bit more juicy. Overall, very good food. Small restaurant, and busy, so I highly recommend a reservation. They also have a market where they sell some Japanese products as well as some of the items they serve at the restaurant. Interesting place. If I could give half points, Id give this a 4.5 out of five.

I had been wanting to try this place out for a while. I really liked the ambiance and the fish was very fresh. Great presentation and service. I also enjoyed the jasmine cream roll cake and will likely be back to buy their to-go version!

Very high quality food at an affordable price. The service was excellent - they were incredibly attentive especially in terms of refilling water. Loved the pachinko machines lit up along the walls in the dining area and their little shopping area next to the restaurant. They stock a lot of Japanese snacks, beauty products, drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic), and food.

The food was okay, but for the price, it wasnt worth it for me. The cheap sushi place down the road from me does better sushi for half the price. The staff was also a bit slow and disorganized.

I got the marinated kaisen don, it was good! Not amazing, and for the price point there are alternatives. I was disappointed with the uni and toro hand roll. The uni was fishy and slimy, very likely it was not that fresh. Ive had good uni before where the flavour was more sweet, subtle fishiness, and a smooth soft silky texture. It definitely isnt supposed to be gooey. For 22$ hand roll I would not come again. I wanted to like this place and its not bad but its not the hype that people have made it to be unfortunately! My friends who got the pork belly rice bowl did not get the spicy cod roe so that sucked! Maybe worth trying other dishes but its so expensive I dont see how it stands out amongst other Japanese chirashi don places.

This place is no joke. The food quality is top-notch. There are so many options on the menu that you cant possibly try everything in one seating you have to come back again. That said, a few favorites were the brussel sprouts appetizer, any sashimi and the braised pork belly don. But again, you cant go wrong with any other options, everything is good. Would recommend ideally for groups of 2-6!

I got the tantan ramen and it was really good! the addition of roasted sesame seeds makes it reallly good and adds a really nice nutty flavour. Nonetheless since i love my spicy, i wish it was spicy. the portion size is really good. nonetheless the ramen wasn t special compared to other ramen shops in toronto, especially since it s pricier here. coming here, i probably wouldn t get ramen again. i mean i probably should ve gotten something fish related coming to a place called fisherman market.
