Making “beef cutlet” from Kyoto into the world’s “GYUKATSU”! Join us for a taste of our crispy, juicy & delicious GYUKATSU【牛カツ】- aka. Japanese Beef Cutlet! 勝牛へおいでやす〜🐮
I recently visited Kyoto Katsugyu and tried the Striploin Gyukatsu Guu. The flavors were nice, with a great variety of dipping sauces to enhance the dish. However, I didn’t leave feeling completely full, as the portion was a bit on the lighter side (I ordered the 6oz). Overall, a great spot for a flavorful meal, though you might want to order a bit extra if you're very hungry. Staff were really nice and inside was cute.
TLDR: Gyukatsu (beef katsu) place that offers that as its specialty, but also has specialty beers like matcha or strawberry flavored ones. They do not take reservations after 5:30PM apparently 📝 ✏️ Keep in mind that they recommend their gyukatsu to be best enjoyed medium rare so that is how it will be served -[RIBEYE/TONGUE GYUKATSU ZEN] $27 🥩 The half & half sets allow you try to multiple cuts of beef, and while both cuts here are flavorful, they could be more tender 🥩 Definitely a good introduction set into gyukatsu although the ribeye was definitely the cut that stood out due to how tender it was 🤤 -[GYUKASTU & SALMON ZEN] $28 🐟 I specifically wanted to try the salmon katsu so I lucked out into being able to order it! It was SO well cooked 🐟 The cut of meat served as the other half with the salmon was definitely not as tender as the ribeye but that's to be expected -[KATSUGYU TAKOYAKI - 6 pcs] $7.50 🦑 I love takoyaki so much meaning I had to order this! 🦑 These were delicious, and I wish we ordered the 8 piece version so I could have had more 😶🌫️ -[SESAME SPINACH APPETIZER] $4.50 🌿 This was quite a refreshing dish to have in between bites of fried food 🌿 I loved how clean the spinach with the sesame sauce on it tasted -[MATCHA/STRAWBERRY/MANGO GUAVA BEER] $10 EACH 🍵 This one was pretty good if you like matcha, which I do! 7/10 🍓 Definitely on the sweeter side, and interesting to try 6/10 🥭 Shockingly, this one worked the best out of all three flavors for me even though I'm not usually a fan of guava 9/10 -[KYOTO SIGNATURE KARAAGE] $12 🍗 We were still hungry after all of the above, so we ended the meal by getting this 🍗 As expected, it was well deep fried meaning it retained all of its flavor without being too oily ✨️ 📝 Expect a wait if you come on days that are busier since this place is often busy! 📝 Staff are suuuper friendly, and are happy to answer any concerns/questions/suggestions you have about the menu 😄 📝 The number of sauces/dip they give is super varied but if you like specific ones, you can always pay for more of it
After passing by this place many times after work, finally decided to try it. Not located in the nicest street but not far from Yonge-Dundas square. Ordered two of the half/half gyukatsu which included rib eye, sirloin, chuck flap and beef tongue. All of which had a nicely fried panko crust but the meat itself, which the server said it was going to be medium rare, was definitely not medium rare. Borderline rare to raw but not a nice enough cut to be eaten raw. Almost all the pieces were difficult to chew through, went cold by time I finished everything. Rice was also served somewhat cold. As an app, ordered the golden menchi katsu, which was a nicely fried meat patty. Thought the appetizer was better than the mains. The dishes were nicely presented, staff are nice, restaurant is clean but basic. Overall, was underwhelmed, wouldn't go out of my way to come here, may give it another try if I was nearby.
Came twice in a week traveling for work in Toronto. Friendly staff and good food. They messed up my order the first time but made a new portion right away so I ate double the quantity 😅 but no complaints. The cooking is not consistent, as the ribeye on my second visit was more cooked than the first time. But at this price range and friendly service, I'll absolutely come back again
Kyoto Katsugyu is a must-visit for those craving a delicious and satisfying meal in Kyoto. Specializing in katsu, the restaurant offers a variety of breaded and deep-fried pork and chicken cutlets, as well as exquisite wagyu options. The katsu is cooked to perfection, resulting in a crispy exterior and tender, juicy meat inside, while the wagyu is melt-in-your-mouth tender and full of rich flavor. The quality of the ingredients shines through in every dish. The cozy atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for both casual dining and special occasions. The attentive staff enhances the experience with their friendly service, ensuring you feel welcome. The accompanying rice and miso soup are also noteworthy. If you’re in Kyoto and looking for a delightful meal, Kyoto Katsugyu is definitely worth a visit!
The food was alright, beef is not as fresh as expected. Condiments were given quite stingy and we had to request a minimum of 2 times to get enough for the ordered food. Server can’t speak English well, so hard to communicate. One of the food order was also misplaced for our table. Seating atmosphere, for me, was cold and boring!
The meat quality was not bad and cooked very nicely, maybe a bit more rare than medium rare in my opinion, but still good. The atmosphere of the restaurant felt very authentically Japanese which I really liked because it felt like we were back in Japan. The servers were super friendly and helpful in explaining the best way to pair the dipping sauces. Cabbage refill is free which is a plus! Overall would recommend this place.
Awesome place! Really friendly service, and delicious foods. There was only one server when me and my friend had gone together, and they were working so quickly through all tables but were so efficient and friendly. They would ask our and other tables if we needed refills or anything and all around was great service. Then the food is very good, just from the katsu it was delicious but there was also a variety of sauces that it was great to try all of them. I’d also recommend if you’re getting a drink here to try the Matcha or the Yuzu Beer. Overall really great place with awesome customer service, will go here again!
Good deep fried beef steak. Can choose different parts of the beef (sirloin, tongue, short rib, etc).
Beef was tough. No longer does lunch special
Had a great meal here! The beef tongue was delicious.
Food was good but not great for the price point. I was hoping for a more succulent steak but it was a bit chewy. I got the Australian Wagyu. The condiments were good though. Staff were good.
The dishes served were not freshly prepared; the katsu was not fried on order and lacked the crispiness, juiciness, and tenderness I would have expected. The rice was dry and not fresh. The staff are pleasant and dishes served fast but I would prefer slower service and food prepared to order. Considering the somewhat high prices, I was expecting better and would not recommend.
Very nice experience and great to sit and partake in authentic GYUKATSU (Japanese style deep-fried beef cutlet). The portion sizes may seem small but its totally misleading how filling it is. Service, food quality and experience was great and would recommend! Its very Japanese inspired in this restaurant. Lots of useful infographic and there is the service call button if you need help. When we arrived, we were introduced to the table and surroundings of the restaurant. The table had sauce (for the salad), sesame seeds and pepper as condiments. They are also pretty up-to-date on online QR code for the menu and even takes it a step further to order directly from their site. (They have internet for those that need it!). However, QR code directs your phone to create an account in order to complete the order. Our table decided to ask the waiter for the order traditionally via notepad as we thought the hassle was a bit too much and minimized on personal information to be shared. The service from the waiter was on-point, kept our cold tea filled and miso soups refills coming! Food-wise, our table ordered the AAA Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen (6oz) and an add-on of Tongue. The order came with the beef cutlet (AAA Sirloin) which came with Barley Rice, Miso Soup, Onsen Egg, Fresh Cabbage Salad (which is amazing with the tables sauce that the waiter recommended). The order also comes with 5 different dipping flavours of dashi soy sauce, Kyoto Sansho Salt, GYUKATSU Worcester Sauce, Negi Miso Sauce and Fresh Wasabi as well. You can also customize the beef to be medium rare or well done and have more add-ons of sides/meat if you prefer. You can also add-on their Kyoto Style Curry as the 6th dipping flavour option as well. The order does come with unlimited refill of miso soup which we definitely asked for refills! Overall, everything was delicious and you need to take the time to appreciate all the dipping methods. We really liked the onsen egg dip along with the different sauce dippings they had. It was quite the experience! Update: Weve been back several times and have ordered their half sets like the Ribeye & Tongue and Chuck & Sirloin. However, the Ribeye is a group favourite that we keep ordering! Rating our options, the chuck was pretty good and worth the value, ribeye was delicious, and the sirloin was last. The tongue is also a good choice. Everything was medium rare by default. We also tried the Karaage which was small in portion size and is one of our top Karaage choices.
I had the rib eye Katsu served in a juu. The Katsu was delicious but I wish there was a bigger portion. Even with the 6oz, I still felt hungry ? The cabbage salad also had no seasoning so it was plain. Nice space overall
Great experience, tasty food. Very good services. The only downside is the rice was dry and a bit chewy. Nonetheless, will recommend.
Good food and atmosphere here as always. Never felt rushed and the quality is worth the value. My only complaint is that I wish they would open a branch uptown so I could visit more often
Got the Wagyu Katsu and still very tough. Couldnt even chew it. I had to spit out some meat cuz its too tough to chew. Gave this place two chances and still didnt like it. Not going back. And for the price, totally not worth it.
Very tasty Gyukatsu restaurant with a very traditional feel. Had their sampler set which had 3oz each of beef tongue, flank, sirloin, and ribeye. Very tasty way to try different cuts of beef! Dietary restrictions: No peanuts or nuts used in this restaurant.
Excellent beef katsu, beautiful presentation and fast service. Near Dundas square. To try.
Very bad food quality given the price. You will find whole piece of fat if you order ribeye. And the waitress will tell you this is so called rib-eye . And the wagyu is very hard to chew as the part include tendon. Don t waste your money any time here. Food
Last full meal in Toronto. Decided to go ahead and try some Kyoto style katsugyu. This was my second time trying katsugyu. The breading on the cutlet was Nicely browned crust. I ve never had an onsen egg, it was good with the side of sauce. I throughly enjoyed this meal.
It was good. But the waitress forgot to punch in my tables orders... so the tables on our left and on our right, whose occupants arrived at least 10mins after we ordered, actually got their food served first. Saving grace from that bad service is the food is actually good. Delicious, even. But they did not even offer any recompense from their mistake. We also tried to reach out through IG for a reservation, but got no response. No automated message from them, or instructions on making a reservation... and yet they still made us wait for 30mins for a table (there were vacant ones, but apparently some were able to reserve)...
Excellent food. A bit of a puzzle for a first-timer but I will return repeatedly.
Their meat is definitely top tier and really fresh. The dessert is not that special though
I have a lot of allergies and the waiter was extremely understanding and accommodating. He took the time to check with the kitchen and allowed me to substitute the miso soup for an onsen egg. He even checked on me at the end of the meal to make sure I didnt have any allergic reactions! The food was good too, and I liked that the cabbage was refillable. The service was definitely a highlight for me!
Not sure if I came at a bad time but went for lunch and the service was horrible. Water was not refilled, wasn t asked if I wanted refill of the rice or salad (which was free with the set). Had to ask for the bill after 15 minutes of waiting. It also wasn t busy. Food itself was ok, nothing special and the meat was chewy.
We came for Premium Wagyu Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen & Japanese Beef Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen . Both set came with rice, salad, Miso Soup & dipping sauce. This was by far one of my favorite meals. The Wagyu was so buttery in texture. The fat to meat ratio was perfect. Service was good. The price was fine for the quality
Authentic to the one I went to Kyoto, shit slaps and is great Id just wish prices were as cheap they were in Japan but exchange rate does that to you Food : 5/5
I eagerly awaited this gyukatsu, but its lukewarm and tough texture turned it into a place I regret suggesting to my friends. That said, I might have been satisfied if I hadn t set my expectations so high.
I went here five years ago. It was yummy :) I really had to scroll to find this photo
I came here on a hot summery early evening, ~530PM weekday. The restaurant was full. I waited 5 min to be seated. It took a while before the server could take my order. It was busy around the time I visited. I ordered the Chuck Flap (6 oz portion) set at $26. In a set, you get: - gyukatsu (beef katsu) - bowl of rice - shredded cabbage - condiments: onsen egg, miso sauce, seasoned salt, wasabi, gyukatsu sauce, dashi soy sauce Their fridge and AC wasnt working or something, so instead of an onsen egg, they served curry sauce. I loved the variety of sauces they served to keep the meal interesting! I didnt even notice there was wasabi too until I was almost done because it was hidden under the metal. The 3 things I disliked about this meal: 1. Uneven cooking - some of the slices were rare and not all medium rare as they advertise 2. Tough texture - some of the slices were difficult to chew through 3. Value for money - they cant really avoid the small portion size because its beef but it was worse because of 1+2 lol The washrooms are in the basement. The basement had a moist smell, but the washroom itself was well maintained and clean. The seating is 2-person tables that can be grouped together or separated by need, with 1 side being a long bench attached to the wall, and other end is a chair. They also have a few 4-person booth seats. I see their account a lot on instagram. They - as businesses would - believe theyre the best, but they dont have any competition.....so I hope another business with the same concept pops up soon to inspire them to cook their katsu more consistently :). I would recommend this place to others as its a change from the usual katsu spots. I dont plan on coming back unless I visit with friends & family. Parking: Paid parking lots and garages around the area, but the area in general can be kind of sketchy.
I was excited to come to this restaurant because a friend said it was his number one in Toronto, but I was somewhat disappointed. The food didn t taste fresh, which made me feel like it had been cooked ahead of time and reheated.
My husband had the Black Angus Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen while I had the Yakiniku Don. I personally dont want to eat rare beef but my husbands meal did taste great if I could get over the half raw meat. My meal was absolutely delicious. Something about the egg over the meat abd rice mixed in was just the perfect mix of flavor (a little savory a little sweet). My brother who was with us ordered the Golden Ebi Katsu Sando (shrimp) which was also delicious. Great food, and not spicy at all!
Heard about this place from Instagram and was pleasantly surprised to hear they had a Toronto location. I ve been to the one in Asakusa Gyukatsu and little did we know that was the most popular location and waited for an hour and a half. This place wasn t as busy yet even though we went in around 1:30pm. We were seated promptly and our orders were taken right away. I got the AAA beef and it came with all the trimmings. Soo good! I was definitely full! Love their sansho salt and pepper. Will definitely come back when I m in the downtown area.
A great place to get some gyukatsu! It was great to learn that one of my favourite restaurants from Japan had an location in Toronto. This is the place to go for a slice of Japanese dining and cuisine.
Id been wanting to try this place out for a long time, and it was rather underwhelming overall. I had their yokubari set, and the beef tongue was the chewiest thing Ive eaten in a long while. The rest of the cuts, as well as the condiments, were just okay. I got free refills on rice, soup, and cabbage though, so the meal was very filling. Worth trying, but I personally wouldnt go out of my way to come back.
Tried katsugyu for the first time and it was very good. The customer service was also great. Overall a great experience!
I ve been meaning to visit this restaurant from seeing all their TikTok s, and it was worth the trip! I came about 2 hours before closing and still some empty spots for dine-in. The waitress was prompt and friendly during ordering and the meal came out within less than 10 minutes. I ve gotten their AAA Original set and found the katsu crisp and great temperature! I also liked the various sauces and the miso hit on a cold day Overall, worth it
The food was good but portions are small. Servers were very soft spoken but polite, and didn t have any recommendations for us, just essentially explained the two sides of the menu. Was good for the experience but not sure I would return!
Great vibes, great foods, friendly service! Although staffs did not speak english much but tbh at is how you know it is authentic!!
Service was very good; friendly and relatively efficient. Food, however, was very disappointing. Beef tongue was insanely chewy. I ate one piece, and left the rest on my plate. Chuck flap and ribeye were tender but lacking in flavour. Definitely not high quality cuts of beef. Rice was not good. Gummy, cold, and low quality. Miso soup was basic and lukewarm. After having watched their reels on IG for years, I was excited to finally try this place. Lets just say the IG hype is not real. Mediocre at best. Do not recommend.
The food was ! I only had the sandos, but the beef won me over. The staff are attentive and really take care of you.
Lots of options for different cuts of beef on the menu. Fairly pricey but I think is typical for Toronto pricing. We were a party of 11 and most of us ordered medium rare but seems like the rareness was inconsistent. Some were too rare and some were just right. Taste was good with unlimited cabbage, rice and soup. We wish a hotplate would be provided at the table similar to my experience in Japan so the customer can do a final sear. Service was very good and very attentive.
I come here every time Im in toronto. The food, service, and atmosphere are always fantastic even after years have passed. I will continue to come by whenever Im in Toronto.
Needs more katsu sauce please
Been here a few times and always had a great experience. I loved that they provide many condiments upon the arrival of the food to get you to try them out. Personally, the wagyu was okay, I prefer the AAA or the Chuck Flap option. Could be my taste bud not knowing the difference on wagyu vs regular meat quality. Overall, this place is a staple to go to whenever I visit Toronto. Highly recommend!
I wished I could give this place zero stars but I am writing to warn other people so they are not tricked into eating at this establishment or if it can be called that. There is no hot tea and nothing that was hot besides the miso soup. The meat was bad quality and served cold. It was almost like they cooked it ahead of time and reheated it later to serve to customers. Do not come to this place
Highly recommend this place ! The meal set was delicious, very authentic Japanese cuisine. It made me remind my trip to Japan. I will definitively go back for more
One of my favourite options in Toronto for Japanese katsu. The medium rare cook is done really well, and the selection of sauces and flavoured beer is yummy too. One of my friends forgot something after leaving the restaurant, and our waiter ran to give it back to her :)
The food was OK. Everything tasted bland, though. I had to use a lot of sauce on a steak for it to have some taste.
This review is in the context of gyukatsu in Canada as there are better places in Japan but a 20-minute walk downtown is much more feasible than a 13-hour flight (and cheaper too). Anyway I got the standard cut medium-rare and it was great. Unfortunately the beef is cooked for you and the end pieces were well done rather than medium-rare. However, I liked the sauces especially the Worcestershire. I also got the mango guava beer (a house-made fruit mix in Sapporo) which was a bit too sweet but delicious nonetheless. Id definitely pencil in a stop here the next time I come to Toronto
I was really excited to try the katsu here but its just ok. They offer a nice selection of meats and different ways to dip and flavour the katsu but its hard to distinguish the difference between some of the cuts of meat. I got the sirloin and beef tongue half and half. The tongue was good, had a good texture and was not too chewy. But the overall katsu didnt taste very crispy and it cools quickly. I was excited to try it once but dont think I will come again.
Great service, arrived right before last call for lunch. I think the food was quite good, the reason for the 4/5 stars is because the food itself was very good but not quite 5/5. Tried the Australian Wagyu $40 and Tajima Wagyu $45. Unlimited cabbage and many methods to try when eating to see what you prefer. Worth a visit.
The owner cashier was very friendly and helpful.
Food was great. I was stuffed with delicious food but the bill was $188.
Randomly stopped in 2 years ago with my partner and it is still the best restaurant we have been to together. I m writing this review because I want to go back.
Half and half portion WAYYY too small
Good pork loin katsu.
What I disappointed that was the dish of meat I had which was totally like reheated from the earlier prepared/leftover, means the meat were waiting to be ordered, rather than it has to be prepared/cooked while the customer order. I placed the katsu order, then the next table s customer came after me and they ordered the same food order as what I did , what they had was the portion was bigger than the under plate, and it looks freshly crispy, I still could see the deep-fried Crispy look, but my ordered dishes be served later than theirs, too bad to see the katsu beef was dry ( I requested medium -rare), the meat was one-third size cut out less than the usual portion size, and not hot, means not from the Deep-fried cooking. and the rice were semi-hard just like left over and not reheated enough and served. Will never go again, if you guys do, make sure go in the day time .
Overall great experience. Food was good, and would definitely recommend trying the strawberry beer.
Really satisfied with the food. It s hard to enjoy medium rare beef Katsu in Canada.
Well seasoned, perfectly cooked striploin. I could never get sick of all the dipping combinations that pairs with the meat. The washroom in the basement is vile though, definitely needs a deep clean and renovation.
Ive been to the Nagoya store several times, but being able to eat it in Toronto was a nice break and I was grateful!
First of all, the service was amazing! Our server was helpful in explaining the menu, giving recommendations, and checking in with us. They also have us a refill on the cabbage and miso sauce (which was amazing). The steak katsu itself was good but not anything special in comparison to pork or chicken katsu. It was a great restaurant to try though!
Ive been there a couple of times. They always recommend medium rare for the beef katsus, but they dont always come medium rare, sometimes close to well done even. The beef katsus, however, are not oily nor heaty. A big factor for me to go again. There are a lot sauces that come with it. My personal favourite is soy sauce with wasabi or the onsen egg. Dip the beef slices into the onsen egg and you can a creamy like bite. For the price, you get good amount of meat. Its worth the money.
Food is pretty good, especially the beef. The different special flavour beer is also amazing.
If youre craving Gyukatsu (Japanese deep-fried steak cutlet), this is definitely the place for you! The restaurant has friendly staff and atmosphere. Food was absolutely delicious. I chose the Katsugyu Signature Zen and was not disappointed. Meal was beautifully presented and steak was cooked to my preference. Great value if youre looking for a place to enjoy some premium Japanese dishes!
THE SHRIMP SANDO WAS SO GOOD and I only paid $35 for me and my mom, we got two soft drinks, a bowl of rice, shrimp sando, cabbage salad and fried chicken $35 is a really great deal, and we were very satisfied!! Service was great but the area... . Other than that everything was amazing!!
We ordered the Gyukatsu set, once the AAA, once the black angus sirloin. We ordered medium-rare. Medium-rare was closer to rare than medium, so for people who are sensitive to blood, medium may be a better choice. Food tasted good and we believe that the overall value is fair. One note on service: we came to dine at 2030 (0830PM), the last orders are due at 9PM and the shop technically closes at that time. We had our food served at around 2045. 4 tables were dining. At 2050, we were advised of last orders being taken soon. The 3 tables left at around 2055-2100 as they had been here before us. We were finishing our dishes but felt really rushed by the staff. Even though they didnt ask us to eat faster, the way they were already closing down the shop (putting chairs on tables, mopping the floor, asking us to pay), gave us the feeling that we had to leave ASAP, and that was barely past 2100 (around 2107). Even if this may have been unvoluntary by the staff, this is something management may want to keep in mind as this is not what I recall Japanese hospitality to be like. Other than that, food is good and if you crave for Katsu, I recommend to try this shop out if close by. Wheelchair accessibility: Tight entrance. Probably too tight for a wheelchair.
10/10 rec
Delicious gyukatsu. The best place to go in Toronto for a unique food experience.
food is great, atmosphere is amazing. the miso soup really surprised me, definitely give it a try!
Love gyukatsu, Ive been to Japan and can say this is quite comparable! Only note is you cannot cook yourself compared to Japan
Good food, good service!
The quality of the beef cutlets at this restaurant is the same as what you can eat in Japan. They were incredibly delicious. I also appreciated being able to choose from two different types of beef cutlets. The service was attentive, and very nice. I will definitely be coming back soon. I was able to eat beef cutlet of the same quality as the beef cutlet I eat in Japan. It was very delicious. It was also nice to be able to choose between two types of beef cutlet. The service was also very good and it felt like being in Japan. I would definitely like to go eat there again.
I would like to try this restaurant for a long period of time. Finally, the AAA original chuck flap Gyukatsu is well made with medium rare and it is tasty. The pepper salt is not that special. The steak and soya sauces are better matching. Next time I would like to try other dishes.
TL;DR: Great Katsu Place! Might seem expensive but meat was tender and tasty (and imo portion was large). Will be back in the future! Came here around 1pm on a weekday and it was not that busy, so the food came out relatively fast (approximately 5~7 mins )! I got the 6oz Sirloin Gyukatsu Juu (which was the steak served on top of rice that was covered with the Rich Umami Soy Base) and it was really tender and flavorful. Also, dipping the steak into the onsen egg definitely elevated the overall meal experience (so highly recommend you try that)! Although the price might seem steep, I d definitely say it s worth the price since you don t often find places (in Toronto) that sells good-quality steak for $24~$26 and I was pretty full after the meal (portion was large imo)!
Awful smell of dirty dishrag or musty mop bucket. Stinky restaurant. It overpowers the experience. Be warned. Beef is chewy.
Got food poisoning from here, had to go to ER and suffered for the whole week
I liked it. Pretty pricey for a katsu, I guess its the cut of beef that is expensive. Get the ribeye or the tenderloin, the other ones tend to be on the chewier side
Very disappointed to the food, never come again.
The food is amazing good, soft, yummy. Matcha beer is kinda weird, not a fan, but funny to try lol. Update: we have Kyoto almost every month, and they are good as alway. However you guys may need to check on the re-fried , it may be too much which made the outside a little hard and not crispy. Beside that, I love the refills just got updated and thats why we came back twice this month . I would love and if servers clear up my table, I dont mind and happy to be served like that (I saw a lot complains these day for no reason, so each person may have different personal idea, the base you did great, so dont worry or keep things in mind). Also, I was the one got charged twice and got solved nicely by emails and we keep coming back forever with friends and family from then .
Its really gooooooood!
Great service and great food!
Shrimp Sando + shrimp and rice were both next level. Best Katsu experience in the city
1st update: 2 -> 4 Most of the problem was fixed. Although the portion is slightly smaller, the katsu is served hot and cooked evenly now. ---------------------------- FOOD: expected more from a $50 meal. Although the meal looks fancy, the quality of it doesnt meet the pricing. I ordered appetizer (chicken karage) and it takes 25 minutes to be served. The chicken is unevenly seasoned, some pieces are very salty and some are bland. The main dish (prime ribeye 7oz) supposed to be medium rare. However, its well done around 1/3 of the entire steak and very rare in the middle (some pieces are bloody rare). Its served cold and not crispy at all. The fat in the steak is cold and hard like a piece of fat pulled out from refrigerator. The sauce amount is very limited, only enough for half amount of meat on the plate (even after I order extra sauce). The rice is pretty bad and cold (made from low quality rice). And my poached egg is bathed in half a bowl of water, also came out cold. All the premium meat is always marked as sold out, feels like they only exist on the menu for marketing purposes. Drinks: Very limited choices of drink. INSIDE: Large tables, bright and cozy area, most of the time is empty. Very friendly customer service.
Great friendly staff members and the best beef I ever tasted. Thank you Food
Not a bad experience, just one that advertises itself as more than it is. The food is alright, none of the meats are particularly rich or flavorful, the portion sizes are miniscule, at least the presentation is nice. Friendly staff at least helps the experience.
Always exceptional quality and lovely service! The beef tongue is fantastic.
The reviews are overrated... Average taste at best, presentations were great. Portions were small for the price of the meals. As for the servers, they barely spoke English and they werent pleasant to chat. The experience felt authentic, but left the restaurant hungry after 80+ meal. Food
Too lazy to type so you read by the stars.
The restaurant is so busy. It is okay but at least be honest to your customers. We are told to wait 30min for a table but it is almost an hour without any table. Meanwhile I saw 2 empty tables that has been seated by 1 guest while other area are available. Just be organized then you can fit a party of 3.
Ive been wanting to try this place but its tuck away in a quiet not so friendly area. I was surprised they have a lunch special because the prices is a bit on the pricer side for the amount of quality you get. I was expecting the food to standout and justify the cost but when the food arrived, I was speechless. The meat was just alright but the sauce that it came with it help made the experience more pleasant.
Oh My God...its so good
Amazing quality at a very reasonable price. Depending on the cut of meat you choose, the price range varies too. It can go from 25$ to 48$ for the Tajima Wagyu. We were 4 and got a different cut of meat each. The tonkatsu came medium rare, their recommended temperature with a bowl of rice, miso soup, salad, an Onsen egg and 4 kinds of sauces. You can get refills for the rice, soup and salad. We got the Tajima Wagyu and the Australian one to compare. For only 8$ difference, go with the Tajima Wagyu it is so much tender and the taste more elegant. Even if the meat was fried, it didnt taste oily nor did it have blood seeping out. It was perfect. Highly recommended and will come back!
Not worth the price. Based on how dark the breading was, you could easily tell they haven t changed the oil for a long time. Beef itself has no flavor at all, and the meat quality is not good enough for making it medium rare.
Sushi definitely not the best. Tastes cheap and overall not good. Toronto has some fantastic sushi places, so this definitely was not to my expectations of Toronto sushi. Also, for two people paying all you can eat sushi, definitely should have been offered two little serving plates of Wasabi and Ginger. Not one to share. Staff not friendly. Kitchen looks disgusting. Bathrooms cold and dirty.
Amazing Japanese Katsu place! We tried both the chuck flap and angus sirloin, the chuck was a little more beefy and the angus was more mild and tender. Both the beef was really well cooked. Portions were large, all the sauces were tasty, and the food came out so fast I was impressed at how quick they cooked it. Really cute Japanese interior and they were playing Japanese music which really set the vibe. People in the reviews complaining the portions are small for the price, where else can you get a steak of this quality and this well cooked for $25 in downtown?? This isn t Japan this is Toronto, and it s absolutely fantastic for Japanese food in Toronto.
The service was good but the beef was totally not worth the price.
Very unique take on katsu. Their sirloin, rib eye, and chuck flap are all great options.
This was so good and so unexpected. I never ate this when I was in Kyoto now I want to go back!
If you have this kind of money, you might as well have a steak. The waiter is urging you to remove the plates. The people who go here are all money-giving boys.
I just came out from the store after dine in, There was a hair in my AAA well done food dish. I totally understand its happens sometimes However, when i asked about situation, sever didnt understand, so i was waiting for their react but they were noting happend. Oh actually i didnt heard apology about get hair in my food from them So i expained everything another server Thats when she asked what do you want? ??????? Excuse me????? Before i asked they are giving some resolve this situation. Its not my first time for vising them , its worst experience. And i dont want to go this place any more
I visited for lunch this past weekend, and had the AAA Original Chuck Flap Gyukatsu Zen ($26). The set comes with an onsen egg, miso sauce, miso soup, and rice. Some pieces of beef were juicy and tender but some were impossibly chewy and I felt embarassed that I couldnt eat it. The bowl in which my miso soup was served was really damaged, like the red lacquer on the inside was visibly peeling off halfway down the bowl exposing the black colour underneath. I wish I took a picture of it but I didnt want to appear fussy in front of my date, and just didnt drink the soup. Im not heartbroken over not drinking miso soup for one time, but please buy new bowls!
Good and service were great, I recommend the New York striploin I believe it was called. The accompanying sauces and egg were also nice.
Super good food and lots of variety in the sauces and the meats I got the Chuck and the Tounge half and half and really enjoyed the tounge Food : 5/5
I really like the food. The music in the restaurant not so much - would prefer slower songs than vocaloid while eating.
Great food! Unique dish from Japan! Wasn t able to tell a big difference between the more expensive cuts of beef. Curry sauce is extra but very much worth it!
Charming cozy little Japanese Katsu restaurant, I tried the combo set last time it was pretty good. The only thing that needs to be reconsidered is the portion of the meal. I understand is a Japanese restaurant so it should be following the authentic Japanese portion, but tbh as a customer here in Canada who paid $40-$50 (tax+tip) for a meal apparently expecting more rice and bigger steaks !! Looking for a Canadian special combo, then i will definitely be back again!
It was really yummy here! I tried the Menchi and it was quick to come out. The staff were really nice and attentive. My friends got the regular beef items and even though it was advertised as medium rare, it looked reallllyyy rare. Still good but just a heads up for anyone s first time here!
It was so unpalatable that I couldn t even chew the beef and had to spit it out. The side dishes also had no taste. It was simply such a painful meal that I left after just two bites.
Must try beef tongue! Just a little disappointed in the temperature of the foods served, not hot enough.
Great selection of steaks to choose from for your Katsugyu (beef Katsu) experience! Meat is served at a default medium rare and softest, melt-in-your-mouth steak Ive ever had!
The Katsu was so tender! I dont think I have eaten anything so fast. Every bite was delicious. My favourite dipping sauce was the dashi soy sauce with wasabi, followed by the sansho salt.
Underrated!
We waited for over an hour for a delivery of food for three people. They sent us the sauces and three soups - no food. The restaurant was completely unhelpful when I called. Will not order again.
Food is great. Japanese steak!!!!!
The beef was cold, unseasoned, and not juicy at all. The rice was barely warm. I am not expecting high quality beef or 100% authenticity here, but if a place is serving deep-fried food as their signature dish, they should at least serve them HOT. Service was good tho.
Its Matcha beer and Katsugyu pairing are one of the best in the town. Considering there is no other decent katsugyu place in GTA, its value is super. I highly recommend trying here thou I dont want it to be too crowded.
Beef is delicious, despite there are some hard-to- chew tendons. Mine meat was not medium cooked but they served another whole plate beef for me. Excellent service.
Tonight was my first time trying this restaurant and I couldn t have made a better choice of restaurant. The food was delicious (ordered a second round of everything). If you re thinking of stopping in just go and you won t be disappointed!
Normally great food, but the beef was a little chewy the last time that I went and the server got my order wrong and even when I asked to confirm if my order was still arriving, he responded with yes but it never came! Poor service!
the fried beef is not eatable, so stiff and a bad cut of meat. The quality of their ingredients have gone down hill. Stay away!
Decided to try something new today and made a reservation for my friends, sister and I. The staff that greeted us was extremely friendly (I wish I got her name to mention her specifically) but she was very helpful, made great suggestions, and explain the best way to eat The food was INCREDIBLE, amazing flavours, great meat, and notably the wasabi and the soy sauce was delicious. Everyone loved their meals and this will become a weekly spot for me and my partner I think
The food was great! I ordered the Zen set half and half since I wanted to try the beef tongue with chuck as well. They had several dips that paired well with the meat. I was fond of the in-house miso curry dipping. However, the onsen egg was a bit overcooked, with egg yolk wasnt runny. More of an egg benedict than an onsen egg. Now onto the main part: Tipping. My total bill was around 37. I didnt check before tapping my card and now looking back, my bill should be around 30-ish (27 before tax). When the server came with the payment terminal, it was definitely pre-input with 20% tips. This is outright stealing and taking advantage of a rushed customer. As a warning for future foodies, please be aware before paying. For me, this would be the last time I visit this place.
This is our second visit ! The Original Chunk Flap is very tender ! The Grass fed Beef Tongue texture is great! The waitress refill our miso soup a few times. Katsugyu Takoyaki Is a must try ! Parking: There are metre parking next to the restaurant. $4.00 per half an hour.
It s not my first time here, but this time I called in advance to reserve a seat at 8:30. The clerk said there were no seats available at 8:30 and asked me if it was available at 9. I also confirmed it again because I remembered it closed at 9:00. After getting a positive reply, I arrived at the restaurant before 9 oclock and was told that they were already off work. The service and experience were very disappointing. The front desk kept repeating that we were overtime for 15 minutes as if they didnt understand English.
The food is great. Bit on the expensive side but definitely worth going once. The steak is well cooked and delicious Also great seating option if you re going alone. Food
Very delicious, mouth watering beef katsu, very reasonably price as well... I love the wasabi with dashi soy sauce the most.
Rice is cold....
Good value
Decently priced food Japanese steak but the value cuts are a bit tough. I would not recommend the AAA Original Chuck Flap as some pieces were tough. Maybe spend a bit more for a better cut of beef. I would not recommend their Sake Highballs.
We didnt have a reservation so we had to wait 30 minutes cause it was busy. Definitely worth the wait. Ive never had Wagyu served as katsu with the freshly grated wasabi and it did not disappoint. Also ordered the shrimp sandwich which was another hit. Gonna have to visit again the next time we come to Toronto.
Why did I only find out about this delicious Gyukatsu restaurant now? It was meat with the good taste of Wagyu! It was a little tough because it was served in that state, but the combination of sauces, raw egg, and miso soup went really well with the gyu-katsu. I also had a strawberry sake highball, but it was just fresh strawberries and sake, and the sake was strong, so it didnt feel like it was mixed with anything haha. I enjoyed it. I will come again
Service was outstanding. Food was pretty good but orders were hit or miss. Golden Menchi Katsu was mediocre. Sirloin was good. Karaage was great. Price was reasonable. More distinct sauce options would have improved the meal. 3.5/5
Just okay for the price.
3.8/5 Authentic Japanese restaurant! The servers are pleasant and the restaurant is a clean and bright place. The food is good. Katsu is typically made from pork but this is an all-beef restaurant. There is a selection of various cuts of beef and other items (chicken/fish) one can choose from as a main. We chose the Sirloin Juu. The meat has a good bite and was crispy on the outside. The sides of miso soup and salad were nice. The Onsen egg was great to dip the katsu in and also to pour over the rice. It was a pretty decent meal especially for the price ($25) and was quite filling. The ground sesame is a must on the rice! The Aji Fry was crispy and a good option for non-meat eaters. The one detractor was the quality of the rice. It was dry and not the best I wish they had the option of Japanese rice here. Overall, a great restaurant to visit! FYI the area is a bit sketchy so may not be ideal after dark.
I LOVED IT!!! I was really excited to try this place since they advertise that they believe beef should be cooked medium-rare and thats how I love my beef too, though I do think theirs was more on the rare side. I got the chuck flap and it was delicious, though a bit chewy. Id like to try the sirloin next time. I love all the different sauces they give you and all the variety of textures. It was fun and exciting for my taste buds to try all the different combinations. I especially loved eating it with wasabi and I ended up just slurping up the remains of the onsen egg, lol. I tried the matcha beer since it sounded different, but I dont think I would get that again. It tasted a bit sweet, and there were matcha chunks left at the bottom. Ill try yuzu beer next. Highly recommend this place!
Super yummy, tasty and enjoyable! This is the spot to checkout for something different :-) really enjoyed the GyuKatsu
The atmosphere was nice and Japanese, but the meat was cold... and the rice was too dry. I dont think Ill pay this money to eat again...
Beef cutlet is the best.
I ordered the Black Angus Sirloin Gyukatsu Zen, which came with severeal options of sauces, bowl of rice, and miso soup. The gyukatsu has that firm and fine texture, and it was very rich in flavour. I do recomend this! The staff was very nice, and they were quick in my requests!
I finally made it here, the last time I came they were doing renovations. This is their lunch special its very delicious. The atmosphere transport you back to Japan. The only thing I was sad about is that theyre out of bread for the sandwiches. Wheelchair accessibility: Flat and narrow entry, small wheelchairs and walkers will fit. If you use a cane it is a good entrance way.
We ordered fried beef. The dish that came out looked exquisite. I felt it was crispy and delicious when I first chewed it, which was due to the deep-fried beef, fat and flour. However, after further tasting, I felt that the middle part of the beef was only medium-done. I couldn t tear it open quickly with my teeth, which makes it a bit like fighting beef tendons, which affects the taste. Others are pretty good. However, we do not agree with the preparation method of the above-mentioned staple food.
I haven t had deep fried beef before but if you re going to do it this is the place to get it
Enjoyed me some Katsu! Oishi!
Great prices for what they offer. Our food was a bit cold. All the staff were really nice and quick with their service.
Not as good as the one in Kyoto
Kyu katsu is good. If you would like your bed to be more cooked, let them know!
I had a flashback, it felt like I was in Asia again. The quality of food was good and even my brother, who is not that much into Asian food loved it. The staff was very respectful and friendly. Steak was on point!
Fabulous food. I really dont get the other comment. First, they have options for all price points from budget to boutique restaurant level, so one cannot really say that this place is overpriced or overhyped. Second, the meat is nowhere near chewy, instead one hardly needs to chew. They actually maintain an impressive rare that looks raw but is actually not oozing with juice. And the service is impeccable. I would say this place is underrated for having such good deals.
Portion is not very big but tastes good.
Incredible tasting food for a fantastic price, I didnt feel like I was tipping enough but I will keep coming back for more! A great first stop for friends who havent indulged in international palates to break them in with great tasting food, or alternatively someone like me looking to try a new favourite! See you again soon!
The staffs are so polite and efficient, but the food really sucks the beef is in poor quality and it is not as crunchy as imagined. Not worth spending the money there.
Nice place for a dinner!! Service was nice
I tried the Gillette beef shoulder rice, and you can choose different sauces on the rice. [AA Tenderloin] The medium rare appearance is very attractive, the texture is relatively soft, and the beef flavor is super strong! [Original Chuck Flap] Beef shoulder steak has a harder texture than AA beef fillet, and I chose the Well Done which is more cooked, suitable for foodies who like chewy texture. The soulful egg sauce of the fried steak rice is a great contribution. When the steak is dipped in the egg sauce, the taste is upgraded. It s so magical! Their miso soup is also delicious, and you can refill it for free. Overall, I think this Japanese-style fried steak is more delicious than expected. I always thought that steak is delicious when cooked in Western style, but I didn t expect that Japanese-style steak is also very good. And because it s fried to order for 60 seconds, the meal is served very quickly. The Japanese-style decoration environment feels like you are in Kyoto. You can enjoy Japanese food anytime without leaving Toronto. How happy! !
Delicious food. First time trying this. More than the food, staff and service are outstanding. Would come here 100 times over.
Meat is way too raw, could still hear it mooing
Really tasty food and great service! Would recommend to anyone who loves Japanese food!
It was niceeeee!!
I saw recommendations for this place on multiple platforms and decided to try. I was very disappointed by the hygiene of this place. After I sat down, I noticed a very bad stink, it was kind of similar to the smell of damp dirty dishcloth that was not cleaned for a long while. My guess was the smell came from the table and the menu. The whole time I have to consciously try to breathe in as little air as possible because the smell was really bad. I also found an unknown white debris the size of a lentil in the bottom of my cup after the waitress refilled my water. I used their washroom, which was dirty and stinks real bad. Not what I would usually expect for this kind of restaurants. One of the worst restaurant bathrooms I have been to. Didn t enjoy the food because I just wanna finish everything asap and leave. It was not a pleasant experience for me. I am highly skeptical of this place s hygiene
One of my fav restaurants. We splurged on the Wagyu set for a special occasion. I got the unagi and strip loin special. Unagi Katsu is tasty. The strip loin is good. Though tough when you re given a piece of Wagyu to taste. Added a Menchi which is always good. Service is awesome! Nice simple decor. Have been here multiple times and will definitely be back! Second time since the last review. Still a fan favourite. Ordered the half and half sirloin and angus. Sirloin and tongue. Sirloin and salmon, which was a seasonal special. Plus the menchi and takiyaki. All great!
If you want to eat raw meat, come to this restaurant, theres blood on the breadcrumbs, and it tastes disgusting, and Ive been here many times before and its never been like this. After eating twice in a row is like this, reflecting the problem, the waiter also did not respond to any, very disappointing service.
Great food great service
The restaurant is okay, but the food is really.... embarassing. They only use just water to cook everything done, then nothing else. As shown in the photos, they dont add any sauce, even salt, (The BBQ sauce is added by myself). The $20 meal includes only cooked meet and raw sliced cabbage (no sauce at all). The miso soup only fills 20% of the plastic bowl. I gave them a second chance but it failed again. Wont come to this restaurant in the future.
Got the sirloin, tongue and karaage. Loved the food and despite being busy with only 2 waitresses, service was good. Plus free refills on miso wud definately go back
I enjoyed my meal and the service was great. They asked me how I like my katsu cooked. I prefer medium rare. There is a variety of sauces to try. I like the Wasabi with Dashi Soya Sauce. Currently they have their fall salmon katsu. Overall, the people here are kind and the food is unique.
We came here for dinner a while back and got the AAA original and tajima Wagyu sets. Each set comes with a variety of sauces/dips, rice, onsen egg, salad, and miso soup. Personally loved the original however I wasnt a fan of the wagyu as the fat bits were too chewy for my liking.
Get there early! The meal is quite substantial as a package deal. Ideal for couples. They have a simple menu, but the food comes hot, fast, and fresh. I have now been twice. Get the steak medium rare.
5 stars, simply 5 stars. Ordered Yokubari Gozen set, which is not on the menu in store but you can find it on the menu online, it s basically a set where you can enjoy 4 different cuts (chuck flap, sirloin, ribeye and tongue) at one time, and I go with medium rare as recommended. I absolutely love the tongue, the texture is just fabulous, my second favorite will be their signature chuck flap, thick yet tender and juicy, actually all 4 cuts are tender and juicy, because the way they cook the meat is to coat the beef with a thin layer of panko and fry the meat for a very short duration, so yes it s gonna be pretty rare and if you cannot handle this then ask for prehaps medium or even medium well. The set includes a bunch of sauces that you can dip the katsyu into, for different flavors, the whole set costs over 70 with tax and tips, but I think it s totally worth it, especially for the first timer it allows you to try different cuts at once, for me prehaps i will stick with the tongue and chuck flap in the future, or go with the 120 dollars wagyu set.
I will never trust Youtuber or Google reviews again. I thought the Japanese food industry would have a high standard in their food down to an art. You guys recommended medium rare which I prefer but there was blood dripping onto my salad. I had to eat around it the salad that had no blood. Half the Gyukatsu was medium rare and half was well done. Your takeout menu should include the regular menu items. The sesame spinach salad was very bland. If i knew i could take away my left overs i would order extra and take home the rest. Luckily i did not have bring this meal for my family. Very disappointing please improve your food presentation and preparation. The saving grace was the Gyutan which was acceptable.
