Great teppanyaki food, good vibes! Perfect for a weekend dinner. As a vegetarian, I loved this place . We ordered Vegetable dragon roll, teppan rice , tempura veggies, avocado and cucumber roll! Loved everything- on point authentic flavors !

As a regular dining in Yamato since 1998, I have no negative things to say, their food was always up to a standard, however last night’s teppanyaki dinner was good but not great, it seems like portion gone slightly smaller, meat thinner, veggies a bit less, only the delicious fried rice stays the same Service was top notch as usual. The place could get a facelift given it’s fairly old, ventilation getting worn out so it could get extremely smelly while the place is packed with people ordering grills, and a little too dark for a family restaurant

Really enjoyed our experience. We took the whole family including several toddlers. Everyone had an amazing time. The food was very good. The chefs know how to put on a great show. Very reasonably priced. The whole restaurant was full of families so a great place to take kids for a great experience.

If you’re looking to munch with a performance, here it is. Hospitality, ambience, and an amazing teppanyaki experience by Chef Jorlanth in the heart of Yorkville. Albeit slightly overdone, the filet minion was a tender winner. Birthdays are another level here —a startling surprise by the entire staff guarantees I’ll be returning!

Beautiful Yorkville. what happened Yamato? Obviously a great patio. I came for Lunch .The attendant was friendly but it took 40 mins to get my meal. My miso tasted like chicken noodle soup, it was still good but not miso. The photo , Teriyaki shrimp. The picture is exactly seconds after it was given to me, I didn't touch it. The picture speaks for itself . There was hardly anything on my plate. Food was served terribly, everything was very greasy. Like one mushroom, 4 pieces of zucchini the rest was onion. Very bizarre.

Note: The restaurant is separated into two areas - the sushi area and the teppanyaki area. Entrance is at the sushi area! We tried their teppanyaki. Food itself is tasty and fairly priced. Great spot if you are looking to dine with a bit of a culinary show by the chef! They will crack many jokes and gags along the way. Wonderful experience overall, would highly recommend for group gatherings. Seating was comfortable and decently spacious - bathrooms were also nice and private and decently clean. Will be back!

Very very very good fish - with actually somewhat reasonable prices. Service was so-so, and the place feels a bit cramped for what you pay. Nice joint, would go again, but the vibe feels like any other cheaper sushi joint (and this isn’t cheap)

Yamato Japanese is a culinary gem that promises a delightful dining experience. From the moment you step inside, you are transported to a charming space filled with the tantalizing aroma of freshly prepared Japanese dishes. The menu is a symphony of flavors, offering a wide array of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine that caters to every palate. One cannot help but admire the masterful presentation of each dish, showcasing not only the chef Edwin’s impeccable skills but also a deep respect for the art of Japanese culinary tradition. Whether you are indulging in the perfectly crafted sushi rolls, or enjoying the teppanyaki experience, each bite is a culinary masterpiece. The service at Yamato is impeccable, with a warm and attentive staff that ensures every need is met with a smile. The ambiance is serene and inviting, making it the perfect destination for a cozy dinner for two or a gathering of friends and family. They were very accommodating accepting my guests service dog. In conclusion, Yamato is a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable Japanese dining experience. Prepare to be taken on a culinary journey that will leave you craving more.

Dined at the table seating area with my daughters last night. Ordered an assortment of appetizers, sashimi, sushi and Maki. Pleasantly surprised at the quality of the meal. Outside of high end omakase that seems to taking over there are very few good Japanese restaurants left in Toronto.

We were so cold ended up getting all udon!! next time i want to try teppenyaki

December 7, 2024

I was excited to try this place out for a friend s birthday and appreciated the inviting atmosphere and good service from the chefs and the servers. They first serve you fried rice which is good followed by veggies. I was eating my fried rice and thought some got on the table, so I was going to wipe it away, but when I got a closer look I realized it was a brown bug (pretty sure it was a cockroach) that was crawling on my table and then went under the table. The chef noticed I shrieked and he said what happened and I said I saw a bug and he just laughed it off That experience pretty much did it for me. I immediately lost my appetite and could not enjoy the rest of my food. When we told one of the staff what I had seen, they just said I m sorry and walked away. I would have expected a bit more of a concern in his voice or a bit of a follow up, but they seemed to not care? Will not be coming here or recommending this place to anybody else given my experience. The food overall is also subpar considering the price. You re really just paying for the show that is teppanyaki

First time going there for chefs table. The food, in my case (tempura, sashimi , teriyaki etc.:)) was really good. However, as a first time customer, no one, no one, explained how the whole chefs table works. I was looked upon by the stuff to place my order of 5 pages long menu to get it placed without having any time to go through it. And the worst part, no one explaines to you what from the menu is actually cooked in front of you by the chef. So after ordering food, which is casually delivered to you by the staff, chef has nothing to cook... Its really ridiculous and the service doesnt care to explain anything. Can you please put more effort in educating your customers when they enter the place!. Otherwise it feels very, very awkward.

The chef was great. Cooked for 8 of us, and worked hard. The food was ok, not worth what they are charging. The wait staff was busy so a bit curt. But, when we went to pay the $500 bill, the cashier was VERY aggressive about leaving a tip (which we did) and was yelling at us to do so. He had to be asked to leave by a colleague, who was then more polite about it. We will never go there again.

So we went to get a tempura udon and a sashimi dinner. I understand it might be a japanese thing, but I didn t expect the tempura to come totally soaked already. I expect it to be just a little bit crunchy instead of totally wet And the rice that came with the sashimi was not sushi rice at all, it s just regular white rice With the price that they mark, it is pretty disappointed.

The food was just ok for the price. Our hibachi chef was funny and personable but our SERVER WAS EXTREMELY RUDE. She had a condescending demeanour from the moment we sat down. Ordered wine and asked if we could get a glass of water. She proceeds to bring the family beside us all water but must have forgot ours. When I asked again politely mid way through our meal she rolls her eyes and walks away we never ended up getting those glasses of water. Even when I asked for another glass of wine for both my girlfriend and I (clearly both our glasses were empty) she brings my girlfriends wine and and stares at me with disgust when I asked if I could also have another glass of wine please. Not sure if she thought a couple in their mid-20s wouldn t tip her well but I still tipped her 20% despite her horrible service.

Very disappointed that this very special restaurant has gone down hill. The experience is great but the quality of the food is disappointing. When you order lobster teppanyaki 100% of the time it comes on the grill as a full tail ( irrespective of the size) and they detach it, grill it. and serve. Last night that took a plate of lobster meat (probably from a can) and flipped it on the grill. The most expensive menu item is just cooked and served. No show, no tail. Shrimp were small, scallops tasteless. The staff should also be trained that you do not start removing dishes until the last guest has put down their chopsticks. This was a high end restaurant that is now just average. Too bad

My 3-star review is a combination of perhaps 25 visits to the restaurant (mainly for lunch) over a few years. The food is generally very good (I mainly eat the sushi/nigiri/maki). My latest visit was very disappointing. My guest ordered a salmon sushi pizza, and did not like it. He tried two of the 6(?) triangular pieces to be sure that he was not judging too quickly. He has had many similar dishes elsewhere, and simply did not enjoy the way the rice was prepared (ie. very dense/heavy). He ordered something else instead. Our bill showed all items, including the $15 sushi pizza. We inquired about why this item was charged, and the immediate answer was you ate most of it, which was simply not true. Then it was suggested that the manager cannot remove it. I said, ok, I have been here around 25 times, and will not come back. Just bad business in my opnion.

August 21, 2024

Terrible food

August 21, 2024

Been here multiple times but will never return again. Ordered a simple $11 spicy tuna maki right off the menu and got another spicy tuna dish instead for $40. Brought this up with the waitress and management and they sided with the waitress and made a huge deal about it, not to mention took the pieces that I already ate just so I couldn t take them home because I refused to pay for something I didn t order aha. Disgusting service for Yorkville.

I have been to Yamato 10+ times over the past year and it was fast becoming my favourite Japanese restaurant in Yorkville (until today). However, the experience today was far from satisfactory. For full disclosure, I was 30 minutes late to my reservation and would have been fine to re-queue for a table. What happened was that when I arrived, a young fellow named Osaki behaved in an extremely unprofessional manner, looked at his watch aggressively, proceeded to make me wait for my table (the restaurant was 80+% empty at the time) and demanded I must sit down in the waiting area (standing was not an option). The lack of civility, tone and body language displayed by the young fellow transformed what would have been a simple situation to one that was intolerable and demanded this Google review. Having been to the restaurant many times, my family and I were shocked, disappointed and voiced to the senior restaurant manager how badly this situation has been handled. Though the food and other staff members were up to their usual par (and they seemed extra attentive perhaps to make up for the saga), I am having second thoughts if I will revisit Yamato in near future.

The Indian-looking or latina-looking older lady server was extremely unprofessional and unpleasant today. She made me feel like I was being rushed the whole time... (And I burnt my tongue!) For example, while I was still eating and swallowing my nabe she asked me, Are you finished? trying to snatch the nabe bowl. (Nabe is a dish that you enjoy slowly including its broth to the very last drop. Just because you finished your noodle and solid ingredients does not mean you are finished.) I burned my mouth a bit as I was trying to protect my nabe by saying no in the midst of still swallowing the hot soup. No server should talk to a diner while he is actively eating. Very basic server stuff. Im not asking much here but just for the very basic, very minimum. Common sense, please!!!!! Also, her tone was a bit off the whole time, her overall mood/vibe also unpleasant as if she was holding some grudges against me... I was not asked how my food was by any server including her. Every time I thanked her for filling my water cup while trying to have an eye contact (me being polite), she would say nothing but would just maintain her stoic look. (No reciprocation? Honestly... shouldnt it be the other way around?) In short, she does not belong here! A Japanese restaurant is expected to be polite, not rushing its patrons. Plus, this is Yorkville... not some... Ill just stop here.

This restaurant uses too much butter for everything. I couldn t eat 60% of the food as it only tastes like butter and soy sauce. Japanese cuisine is generally prepared in a way that makes the most of its ingredients. However this place adds too much soy sauce and butter to every single teppanyaki ingredients. Steak meat was really good quality but it was ruined by soy sauce and butter nightmare. Needs improvement really. You don t need to add flavour or at least ask customers preference. Service was mediocre and felt too busy as all teppanyaki tables are close to each other. Good part: Teppanyaki chef is skilled and very entertaining

We dined at Yamato on Wednesday, June 5th, 2024. Yamato Japanese Restaurant in Yorkville, Toronto, has been a staple of the area since 1983, making it one of the oldest teppanyaki-style restaurants in Canada. The restaurant s commitment to authenticity and the engaging dining experience it offers are key factors that make it special and a long-lasting stalwart of Toronto s dining scene. We bypassed the authentic sushi dining experience and sat at a teppanyaki table. For those who don t know, teppanyaki is a style of Japanese cuisine that uses an iron griddle to cook food in front of the customers. From the menu, we chose the Tori, which was tender boneless chicken dark meat glazed with teriyaki sauce, and the Daimyo, which included prime ribeye steak, scallops, and Caribbean lobster meat. Our young chef prepared the food in front of us using entertaining elements such as slicing, dicing, and setting the food on fire. Our chef also incorporated comedic elements that made us laugh. We sipped on our warm sake and ate our salad and very tasty soup while we watched and waited for our food choices to finish cooking. The freshly prepared food was excellent, perfectly blending the savory, sweet, and umami flavors that make this type of Japanese cuisine so unique. This was my second time at Yamato in twenty years, and they were as good as I remembered. The teppanyaki experience at Yamato is great for special occasions and groups of friends or family, or if you and your significant other feel like splurging. Vegetarian options: There a vegetarian choices. Kid-friendliness: Kids were welcomed.

I ordered rib steak medium rare and lobster tail. the show was great but the food was tough, boot tough I could not even eat it, everything tasted the same we could not believe it one taste and hard to eat, no sooner were the plates removed the server came with the bill and no smile? First of all, there are two sides to the restaurant, and the entrance is on the Sushi side. If you are coming for Teppanyaki and have no reservation, you need to specifically tell them that you are there for Teppanyaki. I still highly recommend that you make reservation. Next, as expected in the Bloor-Yonge area, parking is extremely limited. You can either try your luck and drive around, or just go straight to the Green P in Yorkville Ave. Once you are seated (but your group is not big enough), you kind of have to wait a little until your table is full, and again for the chef. Now, the service was amazing, and the food was pretty good. It was very interesting that (almost) everything has Wasabi Icecream in it. The fried rice was quite a bit more expensive, $8 extra I believe, but I would recommend that at least one person in the group try it.

March 21, 2024

Let me start by saying that Ive been here several times with my family, and that the food is quite good. I was making reservation to come here for my birthday. I called in and set a date/time which was for later that week. I called in again a day before to confirm my reservation... sorry we dont have you in the system. Ok fine, Ill make it again. Now comes the day (my birthday by the way), I live about 40 minutes away. It was raining, so there was more traffic than usual (I dont drive downtown that often). My friends and I ended up being about 10 minutes late. I go in only to find out that they gave my reservation away to a Walk In. After arguing with the guy at the front, who was very rude, I didnt get 1 single sorry out of him, it was clear they werent going to help me out. So I wasted almost an hour driving each way for nothing. I was 10 minutes late, not 20, not 30... 10, and on top of that it was my birthday. I guess because they are always very busy their customer service isnt really there. Yes their food is good, but that ruined my entire night... thanks.

I am not sure what has happened to the service. In the past, the atmosphere was calm and relaxed. Lately, the staff rush you out the door. Very nice beautiful restaurant with delicious food and friendly staff , specially our chef who was making our dishes was very nice and entertaining , I really enjoyed it ... and I ordered Filet mignon , it was delicious, fresh and tender ... I gave 4 stars just because of my drink ... it was so expensive and not that special, just a shot of whiskey... other than that highly recommend

We try to get a date night as often as we can and decided to check out my favorite restaurant. I always go for teppanyaki. It did not disappoint and delivered a little show and lots of good food. She liked it and could not stop talking about it. I ordered the beef roll and she the sirloin. This day it was packed and we got in right on time for our reservation. Definitely a nice place for a nice interesting delicious dinner. The staff are ALL nice, everyone said hello as we entered and goodbye as we left. If you dont check it out youre missing out. Dinner for 2, one glass of wine (I was driving so water for me) came to 150 tip in.

Excellent food, great atmosphere. Not inexpensive, but given the quality Ill accept the prices on food. HOWEVER, soft drinks ... complete ripoff, first off they are fountain drinks, SERVED in the smallest of wine goblets WITH ICE ... my kids were offered refills ... which we were charged for AT $5 a glass. Absolutely, ludicrous pricing on those drinks. Highway robbery. Not cool Yamato.

A high-quality Japanese restaurant that is worth the price. The sashimi lunch is fresh, varied, and has a good portion. My beef and rice dish is nothing extraordinary but good enough. Irish coffee is a little bit too strong. Lovely staff. They have sashimi chef and seafood showcase right in the dining area.

Extremely expensive for basic sushi.

December 21, 2023

Worst teppanyaki Ive ever had. Guy didnt clean the table between types of food, so my lobster and scallops tasted like the meat he cooked beforehand. The steak, which I ordered medium rare, came well done by the time he served me. I expected much better for a high end Yorkville place.

I was looking for a Hibachi place around the Toronto area and came across this place. I read about this place and I saw it is one of the first hibachi places and has been in business for such a while. While entering I was welcome and greater with the best. The show and the sushi was prepared with the absolute best. The chef was truly nice and the customer service was top notch always looking after every detail.

We were so sick from dinning here!! Beware! We had dinner the other night with our parents, but we didnt even order anything special or raw. Both me and my husband were so sick we could barely move the next day. I am not sure what was the problem, but we have been going for years!! Unfortunately, we wouldnt be returning anymore

December 21, 2023

Got so ill from eating the sushi from Yamato yesterday!! The fish smelled a little fishy, but didnt think much of it at the time. 3 out of the 4 of us were so sick the next day. Be careful if you plan on going there, this is not the first time we heard Yamato is going downhill since covid started. Having a couple of our friends, whom also are regular dinners, gets sick is truly scary. Wish our health inspector can go visit and see where the problem is!

I m writing to express my deep disappointment regarding my recent experience at your establishment. As a vegan individual, I believe it is important to support and patronize restaurants that cater to a variety of dietary preferences and requirements. Unfortunately, my visit to your restaurant left me feeling disheartened and excluded. Upon calling to make a reservation for two vegan guests, I was met with a rude and dismissive response from the receptionist. When I inquired about the availability of vegan options, I was told bluntly that your restaurant does not offer any vegan dishes. This response baffled me, as I found it hard to believe that a restaurant in this day and age would have absolutely no vegetable or tofu-based options to accommodate vegan customers. In a time when concerns about the environment and sustainability are at the forefront of societal discussions, it is disheartening to witness such a lack of consideration for those who adhere to a vegan diet. Veganism has become more than just a trend; it is a conscious choice made by individuals for ethical, health, and environmental reasons. As a responsible restaurant owner, it is crucial to acknowledge the growing demand for plant-based options and make an effort to meet the needs of all customers. I urge you, as the manager, to seriously reconsider your menu offerings and prioritize the inclusion of vegan options. By doing so, you will not only attract a wider customer base but also demonstrate your commitment to the changing culinary landscape. Many restaurants have successfully incorporated delicious and innovative vegan dishes into their menus, proving that it is entirely feasible to cater to all dietary preferences without compromising on taste or quality.

From the moment we stepped in until the time we left, we were thoroughly impressed with the overall experience this establishment had to offer. One of the highlights of our visit to Yamato was the incredibly talented and fun-loving chef. From the get-go, he charmed us with his warm smile and witty sense of humor. Watching him expertly cook our food while engaging us in playful banter added an extra layer of enjoyment to our dining experience. The quality of the food at Yamato surpassed our expectations. This used to be a great place but I guess like most establishments in the city, it is a trap now . For a yorkvillle establishment, the service and ambiance felt like I was in Vegas. Loud, crass, joggers everywhere with the noise being ridiculous. However decent food portions even though scallops and lobster were overdone. The service was really good too! Would love to come back to sit at the tables and try the sushi.

Noticed on my bill that a number of extra changes were made. On the menu the scallop dinner is 41 but they entered 41 and added a dollar. I ve been here twice now. Both times the food was very good, but watching our food cook was like watching paint dry. They hype you up at the beginning with a nice setup and appetizers, the chef comes on and flips his blades in a badass fashion, he throws some eggs, and literally everything else was like going to a regular teriyaki place. No tricks, no entertainment, no talking, and no interaction. I don t know if this is the norm and my expectations are too high, or if I ve just been extremely unlucky with the experiences I ve gotten. But if this is the norm, and you want an entertaining experience, go elsewhere. You will be disappointed.
