In the back of Baby Huey, 110 Ossington Ave, Toronto, ON M6J 2Z4, Canada
Tortilleria operating Monday - Saturday (mornings) from the back of Baby Huey Bar. We sell fresh ground masa, tortillas, salsas, and totopos (chips).
I am so impressed and satisfied with this amazing Traditional Mexican dish. This Taco was DELICIOUS and out of this world... the best I've ever had. I really recommend to try Maizal Totopos, Salsas, Tamales, nixtamal masa and Corn Tortillas freshly made in Toronto. Order online at maizal.ca you will thank me later.
Maizal supplies the most authentic tortillas in the city with 100% corn all locally grown here in Ontario, GMO and gluten free with no added preservatives!!!
One of my fav restaurants in liberty because it's still home feeling, fresh, and dedicated to quality and service over pure gains. Wish I took pictures but was busy enjoying the tacos, dips, fish salad wrap, and soup ! They are usually only one for dinner time except Fridays but a nice treat from what's available around the village. They have draft and other drinks to compliment the food! Enjoy!
Excellent mexican restaurant right in the heart of Liberty village. Fast service and a great "mom and pop" feel in such a small restaurant. A well priced menu including many beers and wines. We had their guacamole as an appetizer and it was incredible, highly recommend.
Service was wonderful and the food was really good. Ordered the al pastor fish taco and it was delicious!! I would totally order it again the next time I come in. Also got a mojito (it was okay) and the “all around the world” quesadilla @nomsoftoronto
The place definitely has character & the food is delicious! The downside is that being a pretty small place with a pretty big reputation, they pre-mix all the dishes ingredients/sauces, to keep up with the crowd. So you cannot customize a dish, if you have any allergies (for example to onions). Check the menu before going: if you like it the way it is, go ahead and enjoy a nice dinner in a charming location. I lived their mango margarita. Wheelchair accessible, kids friendly and they take credit/debit cards too.
This is real Mexican food, period. Maizal honours its namesake by elevating the humble tortilla and masa to create really flavourful "miracles" on a plate. No overpriced "dapper" chips and guacamole here, rather you'll find the best traditional Mexican food in town, with a more electrifying menu than hipsters places and tacos truly fit for a king. Don't settle for 7, get all eight quesadillas and enjoy the true "México lindo y querido" on your trip around the world. And don't leave without ordering the "café de olla", it'll warm you up more than a "rebozo" on a cold winter's night.
Authentic Mexican food, very well made. The restaurant loses points for the slow service, this happens due to the lack of servers. Seating is limited so come at 5pm when they open, or be prepared to wait a typical wait of 20-30 minutes. Well worth a visit when in Toronto.
Just amazing and authentic corn tortillas, totopos and masa made from Ontario corn. A true gem of Toronto
Had many fabulous meals in the old Maizal!
The totopos are absolutely amazing as are their tortillas. You can really taste the corn and its sweetness from Maizal s masa, which they nixtamalize and make in house!!
Bad tortillas
The most fresh tortillas on Ossington; Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday.
Order a burritos salad bowl and was disappointed. Didnt come with some items that were mentioned on the menu and we waited too long for our food. Wont be coming back.
Best tortillas and tamales Ive tried in Toronto! Sweet flavor of fresh corn and balance of spices perfect for tamales.
Super friendly small business. Food is definitely fresh and they really care about their product. Support them!
Excelent products, very nice people.
Tortillas are fresh with NO preservative (100% organic), fresh ingredients, and ZERO waste! This place is amazing. Would recommend to visit here any day.
Organic grown locally and tasty what more do you want.
Best organic corn tortillas and totopos
I love it even though I havent tried the food but with the pleasure of buying dough and tortillas Im happy
Tortillas are amazing! Perfect for pickup & making tacos at home!
A word of advice, don t buy the tortillas in this place. I have 5 words to describe my experience: Overpriced, bad quality, bad service There are better alternatives don t waste your time and money here
Terrible food, bad service, Rude staff
GOAT Latin food
A little Mexican Gem in Toronto. I am Mexican, and this place feeds my soul! They are not cheap but it worth the price! (and talks about its quality), You are paying for real corn, made with local organic Non- GMO corn. Something amazing, is that I can get my tortillas and totopos in my own without packaging! :D
Great service, abiding by quarantine rules
Average place
Food was a little dry but the service was very good.
I am not sure if we were just not lucky to experience this place the same way as the other reviewers but the place was pretty much empty and the food was mediocre. I was surprised to find no vegetarian options and the server didnt offer any options either. The place is very small and I felt the ambience was just ok compared to other places nearby. Definitely this is not going to make it to my repeat visit list.
Authentic, super tasty and delicious food. Totally worth to visit this place in Toronto.
Having traveled to Mexico backpacking for over 8 months Ive grown to love the flavors that Mexican food has to offer and this place was a huge surprise to me. Upon entry the decor, atmosphere and smells instantly brought me back to the days of my travels. I was greeted with a smile by the staff who were eager to educate me about their ethical ways of procuring their food for the restaurant. I decided I was going to put them to the test and ordered several things from their menu. I was skeptical because never in Canada has a restaurant been able to match up to the flavors of The far away land but this place sure surprised me. Thier tortillas were handmade and Super Fresh, the tacos El Pastor were exactly how I remembered with all the right seasoning. The quesadillas were amazing and oozing with fresh cheese. this place by far is the best place to go to in Liberty Village both in value and for flavor. Dont be silly, dont deny yourself a truly amazing experience
Very small restaurant tucked away in Toronto but amazing Mexican food! Got the Bean and Guac nachos to start, and the bean dip was amazing! Very warm and smooth and easy to dip into. Next up were the ground beef quesadillas. These were super unexpected! They didnt come out looking like the quesadillas I was use to, guess Ive never had authentic Mexican food before? These ones came out looking like tacos, but the shells were soft and a bit thicker. The filling was great! Super flavourful and and just enough so it didnt fall out the other end! Overall, place was very cute! Staff was super attentive, and the overall vibe of the place was very relaxed. Worth checking out if youre in the area!
A little Mexican gem in Toronto, amazing Plastic free tortillas and salsas + they allow you to bring your reusable containers
The Restaurant was closed.
Authentic Mexican cuisine. Just delicious. I highly recommend the cochinita tacos, the delicious guacamole and the horchata water. The place is beautiful and the music perfect.
Very delicious Mexican food .. Tacos is really good ..staff are very friendly and helpful ... The decor of the restaurant is very unique ...this location is in liberty village
great people, great food.
Authentic Mexican food and very delicious !
Great food, not enough seating without the outdoor patio though!
Great authentic Mexican food in a cozy atmosphere.
Maizal is the cream of the crop (figuratively and literally ) in Mexican food in Toronto. Their ethical and sustainable way of growing and serving their patrons is just one consideration, their food is absolutely delicious and will delight any diner. I love their tortilla soup, any of their quesadillas (special mentions are the pescadilla and the mole), their guacamole and bean and cheese dips are amazing and even though they are Mexican their masa makes the best pupusas in the city on their once a month Sunday pupusa brunch days! You cant go wrong with anything on the menu because every dish is wholesome and delicious! And they make every attempt to accommodate my special food considerations, which I really appreciate!
!!!!MARCH HOURS- CLOSED TIL 5PM DAILY!!! WHY DOES GOOGLE MAPS SHOW THIS PLACE OPENS AT NOON? BEEN DYING TO TRY, SO SAD TO MAKE THE TRIP, TRUSTING THE INFO ON GOOGLE MAPS, ONLY TO FIND THE DOOR LOCKED!!!
Friendly staff and delicious food! Highly recommend the mole quesadilla and the Sopa.
Great tacos! Especially their vegetarian taco! Love their guacamole! Must eat here.
You will not find better quality Mexican food anywhere.
Most authentic Mexican food in Toronto! Great food and drinks, everything on the menu is worth trying. The restaurant is using local and organic ingredients, some of them (like corn) they grow themselves. If you havent visited yet - you simply MUST!
This place is 100% Mexican Legit. The service is great (the only downside is that they only deliver through Uber eats). The food is amazing. We ordered a bulk of Around of the World Quesadillas, Chicken Mole, all sorts of tacos (Chorizo, Alambre, etc). The hot sauces are flavoury! I love this place, and I have not been to it in person yet.
Fresh guacamole and good tacos.
Delicious!
The best margaritas. The food is good and affordable. Only downside is its a small joint, and when it busy the service can suffer. Had to go up to the bar to order desert, more drinks and pay the bill when we wanted to leave.
Great little Mexican place in Liberty Village. Delicious homemade tortillas and the gauc is amazing! Will definitely be back!
Great food and service.
Quaint and clean.fast and friendly service. Good selection of mezcal. Look forward to trying the food next time.
My wife and I love this place, owner is super nice. The food is fresh and made from scratch.
Good food
Wow what a delicious difference of food to experience. The staff recommended what we should experience for newbies. The soup contained new spices and pleasant taste. We had sandwitches on homemade corn bread and loved so much i bought whole loaf for home. Its a quaint comfortable place with a latin ambience. Loved the food, the friendly staff and the cleanliness.
AUTHENTIC! The food tastes so good and fresh that I eat it too fast and end up eating more than I should. I completely fell asleep as soon as I got home!
Best. Mexican. Food. Ever!!!!!!!
Great ambience, nice staff and mediocre price
This is probably one of my favourite Mexican restaurants in the city. First of all the ambience; Everything is just so colourful and vibrant, and authentic. The staff, especially Yvan, are always so welcoming. The food is amazing! They grow their vegetables locally, grind their own corn, and make their own tortillas. I literally salivate just thinking of the cactus quesadillas. They have a pretty good drink menu too, my personal fave is their horchatas.
Yum.
Its a good little restaurant. Good food and good service
I had a delicious salad with Mexican flavour!! Amazing!!
Im not even done my dinner and I felt compelled to write this review. Maizal is incredible. The poblano pepper and Oaxaca cheese quesadilla is the best quesadilla Ive ever had. Come here. Youll thank me.
Excellent Mexican food. Small menu but exquisitely created. Most dishes have a spice to them but all are delicious. Really cannot say enough good things. I was there with my indecisive son and they took their time with us and got him introduced to the great food.
Fantastic food, great service, cozy atmosphere and vibe and great value. This place is an absolute gem, everytime we come here we wonder why we arent visiting more often! By far my favorite place to eat in Liberty Village.
Delicious tacos! Try the platter.
Tinga beef with Oaxaca cheese quesadilla was incredible
Incredible
The best food in Liberty village. The food can take a while sometimes, but the made-in-house tortillas are worth all the wait in the world.
Always a friendly and happy atmosphere. Delicious, fresh quesadillas and refreshing margaritas. We relish a chance to be in the neighborhood and stop by.
Everything authentic...too authentic. The food tasted very healthy, but earthy, bland tortillas were not very tasty.
Finally got a chance to try this place after anxiously waiting for them to re-open after their February temporary closure. Its a very small restaurant and they dont take reservations for 2 people, and it was fully packed that night but luckily we got a table right as we got in. Its a very cozy restaurant and well decorated, with cultural drawings and descriptions all over. We started off with their tortillas chips with guacamole. This consisted of blue corn chips that tasted homemade for sure. They were so good! The texture was firm, the taste of corn stood out, and they werent greasy at all. My friend and I ended up getting the vegetarian quesadillas. The way they make their quesadillas are different from any other place, since their version is basically a larger version of a taco. I definitely prefer this version more as it allowed me to try different options rather than the typical quesadillas which are so large that you can only order one kind. Also, this way there is more filling inside and less greasiness that would result from cooking it on a skillet. I chose 3 different types: roasted pepper, mushroom, and cactus. I chose to have the first 2 without cheese. This was served with a tiny amount of refried beans (which I wish was a larger serving size) and a small side of salad. My first bit literally got me speechless! The cactus one was amazing! Which may be due to the cheese. But the mushroom one, despite not even containing cheese was the best! I dont know how they made it so flavourful! But the highlight of it all was the tortilla. That fresh corn taste is unbeatable. This is what you would call an authentic Mexican restaurant. There are no football sized burritos, hard taco shells, and foods doused in cheese! After this experience I ended up back there the following weekend...its pretty addictive! So far this would be the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Worth going for sure!
Delicious wholesome food that tastes like it was made by the Mexican Grandma you never had
Possibly the best Mexican food you ll find in the city. That s no hyperbole. The ingredients are fresh and grown on their own farm. The tortillas are thick and homemade from beautiful multicoloured corn. The recipes are simple but absolutely delicious, really bringing out the flavours of the main ingredients. The best red and green salsas in town. And it s not too expensive, either! Delivery is always great, but their small restaurant space is so pretty it s definitely worth a visit. They also make a really refreshing margarita. One of my favourite restaurants in Toronto.
The tortillas were a little too thick for my taste and kinda tasted a bit undercooked. Didnt have a chance to try the tacos but will definitely be back. Overall the taste was perfect but the texture of the tortillas wasnt perfect.
First of all, can I say, wow! ? Small but clean and really has a Mexican feel. Servers are polite and efficient. Food is simple but fresh and soooo delicious. Tried the pico de gallo and guacamole with chips, which was devoured quickly, as it was so fresh and yummy. Chicken tacos and tostadas were incredible. Cannot say how much I recommend this place if you enjoy authentic Mexican food. Will definitely go back again and will certainlly recommend to friends!
Nice tacos. Drinks a bit watered down.
Customer service needs to be better and more consistent. And everyone knows customer service can make or break your experience. Ordered soup to go. When it was ready, the bartender (whose overall demeanour was unfriendly) says here u go and plops it on the counter (no spoon, napkins, or bag - just the soup in a container). I ask him for a spoon, and he responds nonchalantly, Mmm we re negative on a spoon . When I express it won t be possible to eat it without a spoon given I don t live closeby, he pulls one out from somewhere underneath the counter. Then I say can I also get napkins, a bag - the regular? , he goes well we don t give them out unless asked . Cool story, you really should have ALL types of cutlery when you provide a take-out option. And you should also undergo training on courtesy and manners. A rude attitude when providing service to others is not cool. I won t be eating there again, nor will I be suggesting it to family and friends.
Second time here. Great authentic traditional Mexican food. Had the best guacamole and tortillas in Toronto. A rare find.
This local, family-owned restaurant is an inspiration! They offer the most authentic Mexican food one can find anywhere in Toronto, even having dishes and ingredients not commonly found elsewhere like nopal and cochinita pibil. They are very eco-conscious, achieving zero-waste (HARD to do for a restaurant) and literal farm-to-table produce (they own multiple farms outside the city). As the name implies, the restaurant honours the great influence corn has/has had on Mexican culture and cuisine, and it comes through in spades. The people and service is great. Welcoming and courteous but definitely leaving you to savour your food and the environment. Couldnt recommend more! Oh, last thing: if you went to this place a few years ago and havent been back, give it another try. They changed up the menu and it improved 10-fold.
Some of the best Mexican food Ive had in Toronto. House made tortillas are definitely the best Ive tasted here!
It is exactly what it claims to be. Excellent fresh Mexican food (or at least regional). Nice decor, cool bathrooms. Simple menu that has all the things you want. Try all the apps and the poblano quesadilla is amazing. Gluten free except for desserts so that is great since my wife has Celiacs. The traditional Margherita is perfect and not short on tequila. About 25 seats inside and a nice patio with another 12-13 seats. Great location as well with parking at Lamport Stadium ( 1 min) or on the street if you come early and get lucky. Highly recommend.
Friendly service, fresh food, great tacos! Thanks again! :)
Delicious and unique food. Great mexican IPA on tap.
Fantastic food and servers and great authenticity
Amazing local spot
Love this place. Great service, nice bartender (Jake), reasonably priced high quality food.
Fantastic!
No A/C, or is run sparingly.
Authentic food. Cramped space. Service was just ok.
I got the the mushroom and the nopales quesadilla as well as the nachos. I could do without the quesadillas but the nachos were very very good. Even though Maizal is a bit away from me, the nachos + dips are good enough for me to make the trip back just to have them again
Authentic Mexican food.
Love it, food is delicious at a good price. More that worth it!
Small and pleasant atmosphere, good food, reasonable drinks and a difficulty in splitting the bill that I couldnt understand: they only make individual orders when there are at least 6 people at the table.
Hidden gem in Liberty village! One of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in the city! Amazing staff, great food and even better prices!
Uniquely authentic faire using imported corn to capture the signature flavours of Mexican cuisine.
Food is fantastic and never stops from being the best. My wife and I go when we can... and the service is superb. Recommend this place to anyone... celebrating birthdays, wedding anniversary, or just a casual dinner with either friends and family.. or with the one you love.
Omg hands down best Mexican food ever.
Wack.
A very real and high quality ingredients of the food, and good coffee (cafe de olla)!
The truth is very cool
I just dont understand why there is not a line up out the door here. Great food and friendly staff
The food is really quite good and flavorful, although the portions sizes are a bit on the small side. Very unique decor, it is quite striking and brings the place to life. A cozy place to enjoy a meal, weve been back more than once!
Went before a show at the Amphitheater and loved it. Pretty authentic mex food. Enjoy. Ole.
The food was tasteless, the toast was old, we asked for guacamole separately and it was not fresh, it had rusty parts and the black toast tasted horrible.
Came in with high hopes based on other reviews but food was only ok. Had a half and half of guacamole and frijoles dip which was good, mushroom and cheese quesadilla was not bad. Also tried the tacos dorados pollo but we werent able to finish them because they were hard and tasted burnt. Chili brownie was really delicious, service was great.
Wonderful and interesting flavours. House salsas are delicious.
Cozy place, very tasty food and authentic Mexican flavours. Reasonable prices. Nice cocktail menu also. Loved the Michelada and next time will try the margarita, which looked delicious.
The food was amazing the first time we went!!!! The beef taco was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a nice semi kick after words! The best taco I ve ever eaten! ....then we went a 2nd time and it wasn t as good sadly and the service was a little off but maybe it was a stressful day for everyone so 5 stars still stands and we will definitely try eating here again on a different day.
Great tacos and guacamole 10/10 would eat here again
Amazing food and service
Very nice and cozy Mexican restaurant. Generous portions, all the typical Mexican food you can expect, great quality and taste, very nice servers. Price is medium/high but you wont think about it because it is such an enjoyable experience. One of my favourite Mexican restaurants in Toronto!
Some of Torontos best tacos.
I didnt think this restaurant was great. The steak taco was very good and so were the sauces on the table (salsa verde y rojo) but everything else was ok; except for the tortilla chips which had a distinct musty basement taste. It could be from where they were being stored. I think there are many other mexican places in Toronto that are much better value and quality. I wouldnt bother eating here again, nor would I recommend it to others.
Great tasting food. Really loved their salsa and chips. Got the steak taco and chicken taco. Both meats were super tender and juicy. All the flavours were there.
One of the best places to have Mexican food
Super!!! Better than expectations Never a dull experience
cathy, if your reading this.. call me
Delicious! Traditional Mexican food done right - if youre looking for an authentic experience, go here!
If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, this is the right place, high quality ingredientes. Excellent customer service. The decoration Is pretty good. Makes me feel in Mexico
I had a wonderful experience. The chorizo and steak tacos were delicious. Good portions and tasty. I enjoyed the chocolate cake for dessert. Will be back.
As always, Maizal is soooo good. I live the service! Vary patient with my son. The food is simply delicious.
Super yummy and authentic Mexican food. Service is great and food comes out quickly.
Enjoyed vegan sopes.
Great atmosphere. Authentic Mexican Flavours. Prices and portions are friendly to all people. Organic and clean food at its finest.
Great place, authentic Mexican food, affordable prices, excellent service and you can definitely feel the Mexican atmosphere they really made me feel at home. If you are looking for a Mexican gastronomic experience you are on the right place ! .
An overwhelming experience. Every dish was absolutely fantastic!! Very homey atmosphere and staff was super friendly.
Mmmm Mmmm good. Discovered tortilla soup here. Are you kidding me... My new favorite. Food was amazing, service was amazing and cocktails were so good. Loved my experience here. Will definitely visit again
Good spot, not the best mexican food around but definitely good.
holy mother of indigestion, this place has excellent, authentic Mexican fare. friendly service, good beer selection... perfect for a quick bite at lunch for sure and likely also great for a bigger meal.
I didnt like the taste of the food too much
Great little Mexican restaurant!
very nice place - perfect for a date night
OMG you need to go here for the sunday Brunch. You will need to call ahead and ask when they do it as it is not every Sunday but it is so delicious! Its just too bad that the service is rather slow. Take your time here, enjoy the food and you will see how amazing this place really is!
Great experience. The tortillas are made in house and were something else. You can tell they take pride in the food.
Got take out. Food was excellent. Delicious and with sustainable practices. Liked the frijoles and the cactus and oxacan cheese quesadilla.
