El Catrin Destileria in Toronto

Im so glad that I made a reservation at this charming spot! The food was great and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was very nice and the decor was excellent. I really liked the speak-easy vibe. Our main server was fairly slow, disappeared after our order was taken and he didnt return until it was time to settle up, but Laya stepped up and helped out when we had some requests. She was a pleasure to deal with and even came over with an extra container for our leftovers to prevent the tortillas from getting soggy (a nice touch)! I requested the tip go to her, but unfortunately it couldnt be helped. If she was our main server, the service would have been a five out of five. Overall though, it was a nice experience and Im looking forward to returning. Be sure to make a reservation though as many people were turned away when they tried to walk-in.

Always a great time and even better experience at El Catrin! Food and Margarita flight was outstanding. And arguably one of the best tequila and Mezcal menus in the city...Our server, Mehal, was tremendous!

I came here for drinks with friends. While I m didn t eat any food, my friends were absolutely pleased with the portion, taste and presentation of the food. I enjoyed a nice glass of wine and a Spicy Mayan, had the most friendly and bubbly service despite the busy time of night. I ll definitely be back for atmosphere alone, not to mention it s a great place to get a margarita.

This is my go to restaurant if I m close to the distillery district- always a vibe & the margaritas are my favourite.

I was disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. When I requested a few simple modifications to my meal leaving off some toppings the waitress informed me that the chef would not accommodate any changes. Feeling that this restaurant wasn t the right fit for me, I chose to leave politely and wished the waitress a good day. Unfortunately, her curt response of yeah, thanks left me with an even worse impression. I hope the restaurant considers being more flexible in the future to accommodate picky eaters or customers with dietary restrictions. It would make for a much more welcoming experience.

Yikes. I hate to give bad reviews but I ll start with what I liked. The aesthetic and atmosphere was great. Seats were comfy and spacious. HOWEVER, the food was mid. For $34, I got the short ribs. It was literally one rib and only meat - with a side of cold corn tortillas? Um idk. It would ve been nicer with a side of dirty rice or potatoes, anything else. I could ve just ordered tacos if I wanted meat and tortillas Judging by the menu, most of the food are stand alone items that I don t feel are worth the price. Service was fine. Our server was very chatty and constantly interrupted our group conversations with random unwarranted facts about food and/or the restaurant - in which we found a bit annoying. I don t recommend unless you re just going for cocktails. The margaritas are yummy. Follow me on here for more honest reviews and on IG for more content @goforjunitta

We had the misfortune of dining at this place for my wife s birthday. I am genuinely thinking of anything +ve to say about this place but there isn t. The food is mediocre to put it mildly and the service is even worse. We reached earlier than our reservation and despite it being empty they weren t willing to allocate a table to us. The server s attitude was poor and despite indicating we were there to celebrate an occasion no effort was made to make the experience special. Save your money, time and appetite on this one.

What a joke. I put my name for a table of 4 on the wait list at 2:19 PM. I call at 6:30 pm saying where is my spot? They said that the resteraunt removed me at 5:30 from the wait list! How do you remover from the wait list while I am waiting for 5 hours in the cold for this place. What a joke! Trash service from the host and the place.

Amazing atmosphere and staff , must try place !

Service was ok. But the food overpriced for the quality. Not coming back and not recommend. Not happy with our experience at all.

The vibe is really nice. Service is slow. The birria tacos were really good and have a good portion of meat. The nachos with beans was also good. The guacamole tasted abit bland. However, there are wait times to sit inside and is pricey for what you get.

We had dinner and had to sit outside on Friday night Nov 29 and Vinny was our server. He made this cold evening a wonderful pleasant experience. I have been there many times and this was by far the most authentic, pleasant and fun service I have ever had. Vinny deserve acknowledgment even a raise or a promotion. Thank you for your advice and suggestion and for being you. You made me and my friend visiting from NB s day! Thank you Merci Vinny Je vais revenir avec la famille cette fois ci! Fabulous place for a drink and tapas by the fire, listening to great music. Extra special at Christmas.

Overpriced drinks, chaotic service, and bland food. We visited El Catrin Destileria expecting authentic Mexican cuisine and great service, but our experience fell far short of expectations. The evening began with confusion: despite the restaurant being more than half empty, we were told there would be a 10-15 minute wait before being seated. Once seated, things went downhill quickly. After placing our order with one server, we were asked to move tables, which put us in a different servers zone. This led to visible tension among the staff, and we ended up in no-man s land no server ever returned to our table. We eventually had to go inside to find someone just to explain the situation so we could pay and leave. Frankly, it would have been easier to walk out. As for the food, we ordered the Frijoles Maneados, described as refried black beans with chorizo, chicharrón, chipotle, and chile serrano. What we received was a bland bean paste topped with what resembled feta cheese crumbs. None of the promised flavors chorizo, chicharrón, chipotle, or chile were present. There was no spice, no salt, no complexity. Just flavourless bean paste. To top it all off, the bill was a staggering $70 for two drinks and the chips. While the ambiance is nice, it doesn t make up for the poor experience. We cannot recommend this restaurant.

0 bad things to say about this beautiful place! It s definitely more than just a restaurant, the atmosphere takes you to another world! I am so glad we stumbled upon this restaurant, it was the decor that got us at first and the concept of the restaurant being outdoors. The service was great, and everyone we spoke to was happy, helpful and seemed happy to be there and passionate about the restaurant. The food, was incredible. We both got Birria tacos and they do not skimp out on the amount of meat, they were delicious and very filling. For drinks we got the margarita flight which was SOOO good, and an actual decent amount of drinks for the price. I cannnotttt wait to come back!

The food was delicious, I had the fish tacos. They have a childrens menu (I did not know this, but was grateful for my daughter to have child appropriate options). The seats were comfortable. Food came out quickly. I highly recommend this restaurant.

What an amazing experience today. Went for a Christmas lunch with colleagues. I have some health related dietary restrictions. Our server, Vinny, well, he went above and beyond to make sure I was able to get a meal, paying attention to exactly what allergies were and then accommodating them. He also recommended mean margarita All staff were great, but the will say again, Vinny was awesome and a reason I will return and recommend.

I was there with my boss and my colleague, food was very good and the girl who was serving us, Tania, was so nice and taking care of us well.

Gross the taco had a vein in it the size of a finger careless prep by kitchen the duck Jamaica taste and had texture more like liver drink were good atmosphere was ok absolutely disappointed in this place . Stick to tacos and enchiladas don t try to reinvent the wheel this is not cuisine

Visited this restaurant a few days back. If youre looking for authentic Mexican food, this is not the place based on my numerous experiences eating at authentic Mexican restaurants. Food is fusion style. Drinks are very good, pricey. Nice decor, but I found the place very loud for my liking.The waiter was very good though. Likely will not visit again.

In good restaurants they bring all the food at the same time. Here we had to wait about 20 minutes for each diner to get their order. The octopus with chorizo was more chorizo and potatoes than octopus.

Amazing experience, we went for my birthday as a family and our server ( Ece) was simply amazing. She was knowledgeable, customer service drive but not in an overwhelming way, very pleasant. She definitely needs to be recognized. The food was also very good and approved by our picky 4 year old. We will definitely visit again.

Had dinner at this amazing restaurant as part of Agave club with the tequila tasting and this place is my favourite Mexican restaurant. The vibe in this restaurant cannot be matched. The decor is truly unique with a Mexican rustic yet modern style. The tequila tasting is the best experience. The food was impeccable. The chef comes out and explains each dish and the authentic Mexican ingredients and history of each dish. That personal touch contributes to the vibe and appreciation for each dish. Doug and Pam heads up the tequila tasting and their knowledge and passion for tequila is infectious. The best service from the whole team at El Catrin. Grab your friends and book the tequila tasting. Truly an experience that will make this place one your favourite places.

Had an amazing experience at El Catrin with our tremendous server Ece, who ensured we had a lovely time. She explained the menu very well and even added her personal favourites in there and went above and beyond to make our dinning experience memorable. All to find out it was her first server shift, like wow! I can t recommend her enough and the food and drinks were delicious! A personal favourite were the margarita flight and birra tacos! Will definitely be coming back! Vegetarian options: My date who was vegetarian said she enjoyed the variety of options they had which included the mushroom tacos.

Such a great place! We went for the Dia de los Muertos special celebration and it was amazing!! The pan de muerto and hot choc were 11/10 - so well presented and tasty! Food had no taste whatsoever. The quesadillas that usually are filled with melted cheese had only some tasteless shredded old chicken and very little grated cheese. The other dishes were just as uninspiring. The target of the service was to incite customers to order more drinks and even after requesting a couple of times for the drink menus to be removed due to lack of space, they were not. The ridiculously high prices for the type of food being served did not help. Avoid!

We visited El Catrin for a birthday and sat on the patio. Our server, Victoria, was so friendly and helpful. She had excellent knowledge of the menu, provided perfect recommendations, and made us feel welcome and relaxed. Our dishes were delicious especially the Costilla Carrara.

Was told there was a 3 hour wait and kept pushing for outside seating. Got a table at the bar, our bartender/server was super friendly but the smell of the bar was bad. Smelled like old spilled beer. Ordered guacamole plus tacos. Guac was really bland honestly, but portion size was good. The Al pastor tacos were overcooked and dry but the fish tacos were great. Overall I think the food is mediocre and wouldn t go again.

The decor is great! I had brunch today with my friends and we loved the restaurant design but the food was just okay, nothing special tbh (especially for the price, its too expensive for what you get). This place is awesome. Started with a couple or drinks and then got the Guac & Chips and also the Salsa. Guacamole was excellent and the number of chips you get is perfect. Then we got the Fish Tacos and the Pork Tacos. Both very good, and since there was 4 each we were able to share. Alyssa (sp) our server took really good care of us, it was busy but there was never a rush to get us out of there and the food timing was perfect. Definitely going back!

I am a taco connoisseur and I have always wanted to come here for many years because how lovely it looks (the patio is gorgeous). However I was sooooooo disappointed in the tacos, they did not have that authentic Mexican taste and they lacked in flavor, even the tortillas they were on were off. I wont come back but I did really enjoy their churros.

Amazing atmosphere, great spot for people watching

As someone in the industry I always want to give others the benefit of the doubt, especially when it s busy. It s not about your mistakes it s about how you handle them and I wish our experience was handled with a little more grace and consideration.The hostesses at the front gave our table away by accident and waited an extended amount of time to ask if we were waiting for something after telling us the table was almost ready about 15 mins prior. I talked to them and they let me know it was an honest mistake. Our server Kiera was short with us from the start, saying that she was really busy as we sat down. I appreciate the transparency but it made us seem like a burden or something for being there. We were given a relatively snarky attitude and comments about how busy the kitchen was and that the chef was picky. When there was some confusion on one of the menu items ordered she hit us with a well that s what you ordered and kind of threw the (super sweet) food runner under the bus for explaining the dish wrong. She didn t ask if it was suitable, or ask if we wanted anything instead. We would have ordered an additional dish if asked. She did not check on us and didn t ask how things were at the end of the meal. It was incredibly awkward and hopefully just an off day for the restaurant as I really hate giving a bad review I just genuinely had the worst service I ve had in years and would hate to have someone ruin a special occasion or something here :-( sorry :-(

Sad to share that we had a less than pleasant experience with our server Kierra. She was rude, unprofessional, and inattentive during our entire experience. All five of us in our party are either currently working in the restaurant industry or have extensive past experience working within the industry so we understand that things can go off track sometimes. That being said, our entire experience was extremely disappointing and unsatisfactory. Our reservation was mistakenly given to another party; which is totally okay, we just had to wait longer than we expected. We asked Kierra for a vegetarian menu and was told she was too busy. One of our party retrieved the menu herself. Our server took orders in a very cursory fashion. She disclosed such things as the chef is too picky so we couldnt order a certain item. When something arrived that was different than we thought, she was rude, dismissive and unwilling to help problem solve. After the food-runner attempted to explain the menu item to us, she was critical and blaming of her co-worker. She did not give us the opportunity to re-order another item to replace; we would have happily ordered and paid for something else. The overall service was very inattentive and very unfriendly. The whole experience that was to be a nice family reunion was adversely affected. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. Sad to say this as we have been here before and very much enjoyed our experience in the past.

Beautiful design, amazing atmosphere, very good staff .. but food is not good for that high price point. Portions are small too I recommend this place maybe for drinks only and for enjoying the design and atmosphere, but for food never ever .. i won t come back for food We had GUACAMOLE EN LA MESA for starter , BIRRA taco , BAJA taco ( big portion ones with 4 taco each ) , 4 different beers , our bill end up 195$ ( before tip ) which was crazy for 8 tacos , a small bowl of guacamole and 4 beers !!!!!

the margaritas, guacamole they made at the table, and my tacos were all A+, 5 stars, all of the things. we loved it here!

Although the atmosphere of the restaurant is incredible and the service is great, as a lover of Mexican food and having been to many restaurants, I can clearly say that this restaurant is extremely overpriced for the quality and quantity of the food they offer! The dishes are overly gourmet, with small portions, and they claim that some dishes serve up to 4 people, which is impossible. The Bulldog drink is almost $30 and much smaller than other restaurants where I pay $15-17 for much larger drinks! Unfortunately, I won t be coming back. At other restaurants, I eat much better for a much fairer price.

Tania was an amazing server and took time to explain everything to people who never had been to this establishment before. The duck dish was phenomenal in appearance as it was taste. The combination of thinly sliced pear coated in hibiscus powder with the duck and the thin crunchy potato strips was just mind blowing. The carne asada came cooked perfect medium rare with a beautiful whipped avacado creme, and chilli butter. The meat was tender and executed with great effort. The fish tacos are a full hit. Alot of places have fish tacos, but these fish tacos wont be found at alot of places. The fish batter crunchy light and airy with each taco dressed to perfection. Got the tuna watermelon ceviche and to be completely honest this was the star of the show. Although i believe the little bowl the ceviche is served in should be criminal. The ceviche itself just melted in your mouth without much effort, the flavours unanimously blended - complimenting each other making the watermelon flavour most smooth and rich. Real cane sugar coca cola available here. The vegetarian mushroom burger was surprisingly a really really good tasting option. The bread is just right, the closest you can get to meat without all these weird substitute options out currently. If youre not keen on a sandwich i believe they also do the same style mushrooms in a main plate with fresh hot tortillas waiting to be dressed to your liking We had reservations for 10:30 and they take last seatings at 11. We thought we would be rushed or in a pinchy situation. Not at all. Last call for kitchen is at 11. We stayed past 12 and didnt get cut off by any sort of attention from staff even though we were nearly the last few people inside. Really honestly for a date this place would be great for a date or a get together as they have a whole tasting experience for the entire table at 75$/head. Id say budget per person 50-80 bucks alcohol excluded. Waiters also be knowing their stuff, attentive and well informed. Vegetarian options: Entirely separate menu for vegetarians. The mushroom burger slapped and i eat meat

Delicious food! & Mason was a wonderful server

The size of the dishes has decreased a lot and the flavours were just ok. After waiting for more than half an hour for food we had to ask for the bill. The waitress explained that there are lots of new hire as an excuse for the delay but sincerely in terms of portions, flavours, service = prices, it could do a lot lot better. Not excited to be back

We are from Ottawa and this was our second visit to this restaurant. We found it by chance this past February. This time our waiter was Vinnie. He was excellent. The woman we had the first time was terrific as well. We love Mexican food and this is the best Mexican food we have found in Canada. The fish tacos are to die for. The corn appetizer is Devine. Tuna Tostitos were just ok. You have to have the guacamole!! Our first visit we had chicken Gorditas, again very good. We ve had the Churros last time with all the dips, also very good. This time we had the ice cream with Mexican cookies and fresh lime-amazing, refreshing and lite. And I haven t mentioned the alcohol beverages: the marg flight is wonderful, mohitos amazing, not as keen on their red wine sangria. A bit bland, lacking flavour. A bit expensive but an amazing treat. And the atmosphere I again terrific. Can t say enough about this place. And private decorative bathroom stalls, very nice touch.

El catrin is one of my favorite spots in toronto! Their guac is amazing and I thought my birria tacos were pretty good as well! We did think the chicken quesadilla was sort of plain, although still good. Our server, Mehul, was wonderful and took great care of us!

Went to the Agave Club dinner - what an experience. It was fabulous. We had so many courses including - guacamole, mussels, shrimp, tacitos, cajeta cake, and of course tequila. The service was amazing, and the atmosphere fabulous. Cant wait to attend another dinner. Highly recommend.

Amazing food! The atmosphere is so cool, but honestly it was a bit loud. Music could have been turned down just a touch. Had the Tacos Barria and the Chicken Flautas. Phenomenal! The freshly made salsa also delicious.

Overall an enjoyable dining experience! A big thank you to our server, Barok, who was pleasant, playful and attentive throughout. As a Mexican, we can say the food was pretty darn delicious!

The patio and our server were nice enough. The thing is that a of couple days later, I am still nausous just thinking about the Tlayuda Oaxaca (mexican pizza). Its probably on me for ordering it, but despite knowing the ingredients, I did not anticipate the ratios...it was so much onion and cactus...and so salty. Just know what youre getting into - maybe a nice time or maybe dinner PTSD. Given the price, would expect things to be a smidge better.

Burak was an excellent server/bartender. He made my experience, birthday extra special. I loved his knowledge on tequila!

We came here to celebrate my friend s birthday, and we had a wonderful experience, food drinks atmosphere everything was perfect, they even had more than enough options for vegetarians like us, our server Michelle young helped us through the menu.To make our night even better they decorated the Tres leches like a birthday cake and sang birthday song, even the manager (Earl Bryan) joined the celebration. We enjoyed a lot and they made my friend s birthday memorable. Vegetarian options: They have are more the enough options for vegetarians like us.

DO NOT BOOK WORK FUNCTIONS HERE! Go literally anywhere else! Based on the reviews, perhaps we had an off night. I was attending El Catrin for a work dinner. The issues started right away when my colleague asked if she could store her heavy bag for 20 minutes - the response was unfriendly. OK then, lets just have a drink at the bar I guess... Work had reserved a table in a semi private area. We were told nope not available. After some debate ok it is available but ONLY until 730. We were given drinks but not asked about food and had to track down a waitress around 610. To be fair to the waitress it was busy... However, we were barely able to get an order in for food in before we were promptly told to leave around 7:25. I left hungry. I think the food was good but hardly had a chance to taste it. The drink was 90% ice without a straw so hard to drink it. All together a bad experience from beginning to end.

Small and very expensive portions. Duck breast served with spicy sauce really bad idea! And dessert was just disgusting! Food : 1/5

Overall experience was amazing. Especially our server, Michelle Young, was fantastic with her helpful and jolly nature. The manager-earl even took personal care to ensure we have a pleasant evening as it was. They even provided free desert as a birthday treat!!

They re policies are crazy

Food was good, not great but better than okay, and the ambiance is pretty good. After that it was downhill: while the waiter was quick to respond, the food took an incredibly long time to arrive, with quite a while between starters and mains. It was 50 minutes between sitting and getting out mains. It was also quite expensive for what you get. I will avoid, in the future.

Service is tragically slow. We had to wait an hour for a table (no reservation) when there were obviously tables available. I could see people being waitlisted while we were sitting with several tables available at the patio and no obvious reservation. The table next to us left when we sat down, remaining empty and wasnt bussed and cleaned until we paid the bill 1.5 hrs later. For a 30 mins period (we timed it) no food came out of the kitchen, just guacamole. Food was ok, a bit overpriced but standard for the distillery. Birria tacos were tasty but the tortillas couldnt hold the filling and broke. The flan was really good.

Food is ok, average at best but service is not very good, also we waited over 40 min to be seated but almost half the tables were empty.

I liked it a lot, their drinks are really delicious, but Mexican food has nothing to do with the real thing.

Britt our server was excellent & Willis who prepared our guacamole the most entertaining way ever! They were both outstanding, food was delicious and the chef here is executing everything perfectly. We will be back 100%
