I went with a friend and would never go back Don t waste your time at this place. Service wasn t good and we never got our food. We waited 45 min before our server asked how we were doing

Generally love this resto but apparently reduced the amount of food on one of their standard combo platters to accommodate the Uber charge. This wasnt clear when ordering. $90 for half the expected food was a shocking disappointment. Please go back to your equitable menu or just stop offering uber.

this place is so cute, the staff are incredibly nice, and it s some of the best mexican food with toronto. i would highly recommend the flan, it s some of the best i ve ever had.

We walked in not knowing what to expect, and admittedly this place definitely isnt everyones cup of tea at a glance, but what we loved about it was how genuine, down to earth and delicious the food was. Everything was fresh, tasted truly home-made, authentic, no fluff, no bull, clean and wholesome. The flavors converted my husband who usually has zero interest in mexican food. He was raving and our bellies were so happy. 10/10 would bring a friend and come again. The service was lovely. It felt like a family business, run and decorated by the family which was so sweet and the niece Izzy has her paintings on the wall and the work is so interesting, it captivated me, I kept thinking about it after I left. The space is a bit dark, but dont let that deter you. Overall, a unique time, incredible food, nice people. We need to keep more gems like this alive in this economy.

Omg the food here is amazing. Service is very friendly and attentive. Can be a little slower if the restaurant is very busy. But the flavours are well worth any wait. Highly recommend. Tons of GF options for those w Celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Prob my fave Mexican restaurant in Toronto for taste alone. Dietary restrictions: Accommodate gluten-free Kid-friendliness: Kind to kids. No kids menu, but side cheese quesadilla is an option.

Wow what a lovely ( albeit slightly strange) place with the most delicious authentic mexican cuisine that totally transports you into Mexico. It feels almost spiritual. The ancient Mayan ingredients, down to the presentation. I dont know who the owners are but they seem magic. You can hear a woman in the kitchen, and the host is a handsome older gentleman. The decor makes you feel you are in a mexican souviner shop, so at first, I didnt know what I stepped into but I went on a mexican trip through that delicious mayan/mexican food, right on the Danforth. Totally worth the visit!

Pricy, but I enjoyed the Carne Asada, with a Negra Modelo and a slice of Lime. Great, homey service.

This is a review and comment to the so called extended review. Really this restaurant should be closed down. The service is really slow, we waited more than 30mins for food. Waiters are ridiculously confusing, didn t know they gave us water already, and same happened for table next to us. Bar tenders made 5 drinks, which just laid on the counter for more than 5min and not been served. Price of food is expensive, you will spend at least 20 dollar for a regular portion of dish. I am happy to pay if the food is good but it s not. I can taste the meat in the taco has been cooked, put it in the fridge, and reheated. The meat is dry and has a leftover taste. This is not like the other comment said they make everything fresh. Ordered the spicy on the side, but ended up inside the food. If you don t want the restaurant to be closed, you will need a lot of work on it. Otherwise, I don t think it will survive for long. Good luck.

Looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant with great food, an eclectic atmosphere, and generous portions? Look no further than El Sol. While the service can be a bit slow, the wait is well worth it for the delicious dishes that come out of the kitchen. The enchiladas is is a must-try, the mole sauce has deep and complex flavours that are sure to delight your taste buds. I also had the hard tacos, and they did not disappoint. The refried beans are also delicious, not the run of the mill stuff out of a can. I look forward to going back and ordering the chile relleno ahead of time (The menu says it must be ordered 24 hours ahead) Overall, we had a good experience at El Sol, and we left feeling satisfied, with some take out to boot. So if youre in the mood for some tasty Mexican cuisine, definitely give this place a try - just be prepared to wait a little longer for your food.

1) I particularly asked them to make it spicy and they made it bland as f*** 2) food is expensive 3) they placed food on some paper in takeout container. Obviously it got soggy and paper coming into my mouth when i try to eat the food. Recommended dishes Pozole Prehispanic RCP, Tostadas Nortenas, Chile Relleno

If you have time and love Mexican food, then go here. Its one of the feemw restaurants where I feel like it was truly made with love. The platter was delicious and incredibly filling. Somehow the tacos were incredibly hot despite them having about 20 minutes to cool. My only warning is that those in a rush sholsnt come by. They were slightly understaffed, but everyone did so well.

Had a wonderful date night here with my wife - the food is unbelievably good and the owner was friendly, courteous, and he practically bent over backward to make our evening as lovely as possible.

We went here last night after a long time. The food was excellent, very authentic and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. The platter for two was the prefect sampler of the restaurant. Vegetarian options: Plenty of vegetarian options available

The decoration is beautiful and the waiter was very friendly.. Unfortunately in this first visit the food was only okay! We ordered the meat combo for two. The hard tacos not great flavour. The soft tacos were a bit better. I found a big miss for a mexican restaurant that they did not have several hot sauces (and spicy ones!). I asked for some hot sauce and the one offered was the one that came with the hard tacos (a red one), but it was zero spicy. A bit disappointed that there is no Agua de Horchata on their menu.

We do not often eat out but when we do our first choice is Mexican. We have tried a variety of venues but always come back to El Sol. We always have my birthday dinner there, my family meet up for a feast. There is always plenty of street parking in front after 6 on week days. It is cute and fun inside and the food is the best in the city. We start with margaritas and guacamole with homemade chips, then we order 2 platters of soft and hard tacos, there is always take home for the food we cannot finish. It is all homemade once you place your order, warning, dont go if you have somewhere else you have to be . If you want fresh food be prepared to spend the evening, it is so worth it. The owner is very friendly and we have never been disappointed in the quality of food. I highly recommend you try this family owned and run restaurant for an escape to Mexico for a very reasonably priced and unforgettable experience.

Shared El Sol Meat Platter for 2 ($54) It was enough for 3 portions. Loved taco aguilenos( soft flour tortilla w/chicken, potato in adobo sauce) and taco sonorenses( soft flour tortilla w/ chorizo, egg & veggies). Was so filling and flavorful. However was not too crazy about their hardshell taco offers. Taco dorados( hard shell corn tortillas with chicken & potato) was okay but corn tortilla itself was not too impressive, Tostadas Nortenãs with shredded beef had almost like jerky texture. Both hardshell tacos were covered with thick matchsticks of carrots cucumber which have no flavour in wintertime Canada. I still have not try their Enchiladas, empanadas, mole, tamale & pozole, therefore it is early to say if I liked their food or not. But for tacos I would stick to softshell choices.

I like how the place is set-up with all the bright colours and various display pieces. There is a great sense of authenticity with the whole aesthetic. We were already supposed to dine here one Friday evening a couple of weeks back, but the place was packed during that weekday night. This time around we were able to secure seating during a Sunday evening between 8 to 9PM. During the time there were 2 other table groups of diners present. What we had was the Tacos Dorados ($18.75) and the Enchiladas De Mole ($26). We were supposed to order their Menudo ($26), but they mentioned it was not available to order during that time. There were a couple of other dishes in the menu which we tried to order, but they cant be ordered during the time which led to us settling with the Enchilada De Mole. The Tacos were great. The Enchilada De Mole was something else. It was a lot of different flavours at the same time. I personally enjoyed having it because I am someone who enjoys trying out new unique tastes and flavours. The menu items are on the pricey side. There is also a long wait time before the order gets ready. The last unfortunate wrinkle in the whole dining experience was that our server even had our order cheque mixed up with a different table.

I love this place and have been coming to it since I was born. Im overjoyed to see its still open. I have a few of their signature suns all over my home here in Alberta, it always reminds me of that familiar taste of home. My favorite thing on the menu here is the Tacos Albenil but you really cant go wrong with anything else they serve. Its all authentic (take it from me, a Norteño).

Would be nice to have a more comfortable or larger patio but you work with what you got. The food however, was outstanding. Flavours that rivaled places Ive been in Oaxaca, Chiapas, or Sinaloa. This food is exceptional, you can tell its all family recipes cooked by someone who really knows what tastes good.

Went for dinner last night, it was delicious food, nice atmosphere and the art on the wall is very creative. I had the enchiladas and they were so good. Dont forget to try the sangria! That was my favorite.

I had the enchiladas with mole sauce. Really good, tasted like how my mom used to make it. Good portion as well. Atmosphere was nice with bright colours and it wasn t busy when we went on a Saturday evening. Only thing I have to complain about is that it is a bit pricy and it took a while for our food to come out. Not sure if they are short staffed, but the taste and authenticity of the food made up for it.

By far the worst Mexican I have had in Toronto. Soft tacos were soggy. Chicken had little bones in it and it tasted old. Steak was old and sinewy. Tacos and nachos were stale and over salted. It was also highly overpriced. Never again.

What a disaster dinner, the menu don t reflect the same prices online. Secondly, almost all the menu items were sold out and run out everything like first Mexican restaurant they don t have more guacamole. Just 15 people on the restaurant s and we wait 1/2 for the food. Very disappointed of this place.

Best authentic Mexican food, and for a great price too! The dinner for two deal is amazing and you get to try a few different dishes. Great serving sizes as well. The restaurant itself has so much character, cant wait to visit when COVID restrictions ease up! For now it is a take-out favourite :)

Everyone complaining about the wait time needs to realize the food is Home made and fresh, not frozen or packaged, of course it will take longer to cook. That being said you will likely be waiting 30-50 minutes for your meal, but it is hot, fresh and DELICIOUS. Definitely worth the wait. Without question the best Mexican food I have ever had. We ordered salsa chips for appetizers. The tortillas are homemade from scratch and it shows, tostitos do not hold a candle. The salsa was fresh and delicious, served with some of the best guacamole ive ever had. And then my entre, the portions are HUGE, I was served a hearty helping of delicious flavourful Spanish rice, along with THE best refried beans I have ever tasted, they were the perfect texture and taste for refried beans and they were amazing!. I had the Tacos Aguilenos, it was spicy and, delicious, and very large and filling. So to sum it up, great rice, great tacos, and EXCELLENT refried beans for my entre. The atmosphere of the restaurant is a little daunting and may be hard on some people eyes, the walls are covered in irritatingly bright Mexican pottery, It is unnecessary but not detrimental to your experience.

Mexican food is my favourite food. And this place is the most authentic, flavourful, colourful, and friendly mexicain restaurant Ive ever been to. The managers are welcoming and the staff very accommodating. Order your main course early, as they prepare for you fresh and with care. It will take more time than a typical north American restaurant. If you like spice, get the guacamole with chips, salsa, and a bowl of hot chilies. All dishes are generously served and the drinks are excellent. The decoration is authenticate and vintage giving a real soul to El Sol!

El Sol has consistently among the best Mexican food in Toronto. The service is usually slow but when you taste the food it is always worth it. Their empanadas are excellent and their soft and hard tacos are divine. You just need a drink to get through the slow service.

Best authentic Mexican restaurant in the GTA!

Always loved this place pre-pandemic, and was pleased to see excellent precautions taken by staff for pick-up orders. Got the vegetarian platter for two and it was the best thing i have eaten since March. Cant wait to go back here in person, but pick-up from here will be my go-to pandemic treat until then.

Popped by as I was craving Mexican food and wound up not just having the best Mexican food Ive ever had, but some of the best food Ive had in a very long time. Definitely will be making an effort to be return in the near future.

I think El Sol gets a bad rap on some review platforms because their service is not Jack Astors fast - but hold your horses, gentrifiers. Everything is fresh and crisp in their food, from the tortillas to the vegetables they select. You can tell they put their heart and soul into their food and its well worth the wait. The atmosphere is an eclectic art show and thats equally rad. If youre looking for a quick bite, this may not be the place. But if you want good food on a relaxed evening, youll be more than happy here.

This has been one of our top take out spots during COVID> The El Sol Meat Platter for 2... well, it can easily feed 3, or even 4... love love love the beef tostado piled with lettuce and all the crazy fresh veg. Takes me back to Mexico and only a 10 minute drive from the house.

El Sol is an authentic, fresh and great Mexican restaurant that has been operating for 24+ years! The menu is limited but delightful. The service is quite friendly and the ambiance is simply exceptionally authentic. The restaurant also sell Mexican arts and crafts.

Theres a lot to like at El Sol. The walls are quirky, the glassware is beautiful, and the menu is far from limited. Youll find all the usual favourites along with some other fun specialties like tamales, tacos dorados, sopes, and mole. Was surprised how oily the tamales were, but absolutely loved them. Thought the enchiladas de mole were just as great. Two favourites for sure! Id much prefer if the enchiladas and tacos didnt come with beans and rice (rice compares to any old tex mex side), but I understand it. I actually think El Sol would be almost perfect if they just made their rice and beans an add on or side at extra cost instead of serving it with all their meals. I just dont get their spicy salsa. Its basically a failed version of chili oil with not much actual kick that makes everything oily. If this place can figure out their salsas, it would make a HUGE difference. Guacamole is a great side for avocado lovers as it has huge chunks, but if you like limey guac you might want to skip it. Not sure if it even has lime (wish it had much more), but its still an easy order for me. Worth checking. Definitely try something new because they have some fun specialties!

My wife & I went here recently. We were hungry and wanted something fairly quick. So we ordered a burrito plate with beef adobo. This comes with rice and refried beans. We waited 45 minutes for the food to come. When the food came, my wifes dish was really spicy, even though she asked for mild. Another customer ordered the same thing and returned the plate because it was too spicy. The beef was way overcooked and leathery. The server was understanding and was willing to make something else but we couldnt wait another 45 minutes. The burrito is $14.95 for two burritos, seasoned rice and refried beans.

Everything Ive tried here is delicious, fresh, and authentic. Other reviews complain about wait time: its not fast food, its the kind of place where you enjoy some apps and a sangria while they make your meal from scratch. The mole sauce is amazing (if you like a little spice). Prices are good considering the huge portions (I always leave with leftovers for the next day).

The atmosphere is nice and the owner as well. The food is too expensive though for the quality you get, and Im not spending $9 on chips and salsa. As a Texas living in Toronto, this is a hard pass for me.

This place is wonderful. The restaurant it self is gorgeous, since is doubles as a boutique. It has plenty of decorations, hats and some clothes for sale. The food is delicious and as some reviews say, this is not a fast food place at all. If you want something fast and cheap, this is not it. It is great is you are looking for fresh ingredients, great quality and flavor, at a reasonable price. Staff is very friendly, Mexican, and will do anything to accommodate you.

23 years on the Danforth!!! An extremely colourful and fun interior, clean and spacious. Food selection though seems minimal, has alot of choice and mix and match, with you decide how spicy... was excellent and portions were generous! They provide chips and real Mexican dip that is HOT!!! Margaritas were lime only, and seemed a little weak... would be great to have a couple of more flavours available and just bit stronger. Playlist was authentic and upbeat...just turn up a tad. You will not be disappointed... a great way to start your night on the Danforth!

Best guacamole I ve ever had. The meals are good sized portions and full of colour. I ve been going here once a week for the last couple weeks.

Food is really excellent! Some of the best guacamole Ive ever had in the city. And the oil that they make to serve with the chips is also really really good and hot! There are some complaints that the service is slow, and thats true. Dont go on a night when youre in a rush, but if you have time to sit back and enjoy your meal, youre in for a treat! The beef tacos were amazing. I really enjoyed the bowl of chilli peppers for added heat/spice. The service here is slow, but the food was prepared with great care. Atmosphere was charming with unique decorations adding flares of colors. Great cocktails, and good place for a date. Can also buy random Mexican knickknacks for a souvenir.

With the moms taking their sweet time we got here really late. Server was very friendly. Admittedly the food took forever to come out (we may have also just been starving). But it was worth the wait 100%, so good, obviously freshly made, so tasty. There was also a neat little market shop thing in the back which MIL liked, she bought a hat or something.

This place was authentic, fresh and light. The food was absolutely delightful. I highly recommend this place. Very reasonable prices. This is not your typical fast food taco place. As you can see from the pictures the restaurant has a personality of its own. I am definitely going back again with a group of friends. The mixed cocktails were perfectly balanced. What a little enchanting place. El Sol has so much of character due to the random pieces of art. Almost feels like you need to spend about 30 minutes before your meal to check everything out so you know what s around you. The meal was absolutely delicious, homey and satisfying. This is the real deal when it comes to Mexican food, which can be a bit polarizing. You either love the authenticity and flavor, or youre slightly turned off by the no- compromise cuisine. I spent many years living in southern California, so Im firmly on the love side. The food is a bit slow, but is worth the wait. Have a margarita and some chips & dip while your meal is being cooked.

The food is delicious and the decor is great.

It takes a bit of time for your food to come, but it is excellent authentic Mexican food. They make the best guacamole Ive ever tasted and the meal is delicious and filling. Friendly staff. Interesting Decor. My favourite Mexican restaurant.

Was surprised given the relatively high rankings - not very good and extremely slow - decor/furniture is old, cluttered, and dirty

Not the cheapest place, $9 for a margarita, $15-$22 for an entree and for really basic food. My meal consisted of two flour tortillas wrapped around refried beans and cheese, nothing stellar. The rice on the side tasted like an uncle Bens pack and the salad had store bought dressing. None of it was bad but I was mad at myself for not staying at home and making even half assed tacos myself. It would have tasted the same and been cheaper. That being said the atmosphere at the restaurant is fantastic, love the decoration and the staff was nice. Save yourself the trip and disappointing food.

Nice server, great cocktails, colorful ambiance,... but food is gross and flavorless. I still wonder how can you make food so fat and so dry at the same time??? Kudos to the people who can finish their plate. Good luck !

Great food.. love the atmosphere

Fantastic, authentic Mexican food served here. Has a friendly vibe and the decor is an abundance of Mexican artwork and food/drink plates and glasses. Very unique spot with delicious food. Platters offer the opportunity to try a variety of items in a share plate sort of way. Highly recommend the fresh made guac and chips as an appy. Service can be slow as the food is made fresh. You can ask for mild/medium/hot. They also give you a little dish with hot peppers and some onions & carrots all soaking in oil. I usually drizzle my meal with the oil to add a little zing. Margaritas are authentic and tasty. El Sol is a place to have a leisurely meal with friends and to gear down for an evening.

Really great food and vibe. I love everything Ive have here over the years. Service is slow and not very attentive, but the food is good. I would probably eat here a lot more if the service was better. Food is very consistent.

Really lovely food in this little, family-owned Mexican food place. Two-person platters to share (meat or vegetarian) for about $36: its a lot of food! A mixture of family and traditional recipes. Well definitely be back.

Food is excellent BUT its all cooked to order... meaning it comes out if the kitchen very slow OR with a lot of love :) NOTE: apps come out faster. Other then the wait for food everything else is pretty good.

Good traditional food. It is a bit pricey but I can appreciate that traditional food takes time to make and is a labour of love. The spicing is hit or miss. We ordered a mild combo and a medium combo, and some of the mild ones were hotter than the mediums! While I like spice, for my boyfriend he didnt appreciate the randomness of spice. It was like playing spicy roullette
