Famous for our incredible rooftop patio and 4 levels, Hemingway’s has become an iconic Toronto hotspot. We've called the beautiful neighbourhood of Yorkville home for 39 years (and counting)! We're known as the laid back bar in a ritzy area. There's no dress code - we're casual and trendy. Everyone is welcome! Our restaurant features three bars, restaurant seating, and four patios that are heated and covered during the winter. Not to mention, delicious daily specials and 24 draught beers on tap. We're from New Zealand, and open until 2am 365 days/year. Decked with large screens, we're perfect for local and international sports. Hemingway's is home to Rugby. Always busy with events including Silent Discos, Themed Trivia, and Live Music.
They need to fix their leaky heated patio. Great spot except for the table we sat at had leaking water dripping from the tarp/mouldy wood above. It dropped so much that it caused multiple holes to form on tissues we left on the table to prevent it from splashing on our food and drinks.
This place was very busy and lively. Ordered Long Island iced tea for myself - perfectly mixed and refreshing. As for the food, it was average. However, faster service would have improved the experience. Overall - 4/5
Perfect place to watch rugby. Friendly and engaging staff. Prices were excellent. Serving sizes were generous (not overly). Variety of food choices were satisfying. We had a lamb plate and BBQ ribs special, they were delicious. Heated patio with lots of light. Our server was knowledgeable about the selection of wines.
We made a reservation for Friday lunch on the patio to make the most of last days of summer and patio season. We were seated very close to the bar and we could see everything coming out of the downstairs kitchen and being served to other customers; everything looked so delicious. We ordered “Thai Chicken Salad”. The ingredients were fresh and the sauce was very delicious. The service is fast and staff are friendly. Parking could be a challenge here, but it’s perfectly accessible through subway.
They have a nice rooftop patio/bar that's great for date nights or hanging out with friends. The food was not bad although it's your standard pub/bar fare. The fish and chips were crispy and the fries were like Costco fries (yum), and the portions are actually huge. Service wasn't bad either but sometimes quite hard to flag down our server since she was always busy making drinks at the bar too. Definitely a cool place to go to, and I'm glad I tried, but probably not for me again!
Great fish and chips that had a very tasty big piece of fish. I had the butter chicken with rice and although the sauce was very good, the chicken pieces were very dry. I had to cut in small bites and run through the sauce in order not to choke. Also had to request more rice but was given white rice instead of basmati 🤷♂️ I would come back to be on the rooftop again, but definitely go to an Indian restaurant next time.
We had a terrific time on the rooftop patio. Service was terrific, I really enjoyed my avocado peach salad, my partner enjoyed his clubhouse sandwich but it could have used a bit more lettuce and tomato. All in all a nice place to spend a warm summer afternoon!
Incredible patio in the heart of Yorkville! Perfect spot for catching some rays and enjoying delicious drinks with friends on. Sunny Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere is energetic and the staff is friendly. A friend of ours had their wedding reception nearby so we came here for some pre-wedding drinks 😉 Highly recommend checking this place out if you are in the neighborhood. Bonus: there are numerous tv screens throughout the patio so you can enjoy the sun while catching up with the latest sports. 😊
I ordered butterchicken to go. Came home and took the container out. Only rive with no chicken. Called the restaurant back. They said the kitchen is closed. I asked to have the butterchicken meal ready fore to pick up tomorrow morning at 10am when the restaurant is opened. Will see if they are really going to give me back what I have paid for. I actually gave $23 tip to the server.. What a nuisance. So, next morning, my husband and I went back to the restaurant bring back the original container of food to show them that butterchicken meal has no. Chicken. I received a newly prepared meal of butterchick. Still have to wait for another q0 minutes. But at least the manager came out apologizing and gave me the real butterchicken meal. But I had to travel all the way from Scarborough. They will not pay me my extra mileage nor gas. So, I took my business somewhere else for breakfast / brunch. My husband and I went to Sassafraz for a beautiful breakfast. Parking: Convenient. Just next to the restaurant.
Nice rooftop environment. They provideexcellent food and service , washroom is very clean. Will definitely go back.
Went for trivia night and dinner. Nice atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff. Great food and prices are very reasonable. Had such a great time and will be back
Good food at reasonable price. Staff are very nice. NOT handicap enabled. Top floor extremely noisy. Vegetarian options: Limited, Vegetarian fajitas very good.
Always fun to grab a quick bite here with some friends. Never disappoints!
great staff, great bar
To give context: a group of 10 of us were there for a birthday party. They were slammed and I want to be lenient but it s kinda hard to I ordered nachos and specifically asked for them to be brought to the table before all of the other food and with chicken -they came out 30 minutes later with no chicken with all of the other food and were cold. -even if they were warm they were the saddest mot bland and underwhelming nachos I ve had. Honestly you can make better ones at home -I would complain to the waitress but she never came around to check in on us after and our waters for the table were never refilled -one of the people in our party had their food come out 10 minutes after everyone else and it was also cold -I asked for the bill 2 separate times because I had to leave early for work and I ended up having to have someone pay for me at the table and I paid them back later I normally would give a place a second try but it was such a bad experience I am not going to and I would tell others to find a better option and pass on this one
Our server Linda was phenomenal, fast, efficient, friendly and had a wonderful connection. She was VERY attentive and took great care of us. Bri also was also AMAZING and made the experience memorable. Thank you Hemmingways!
Everything you d expect from a pub that has maintained a price of $20 for entrees, while every other place in Yorkville charges $50 for an appetizer. Good place for drinks and when you have had a few more than you should the food is just fine.
Nice place to dine with friends and family.
Great spot for rugby in Toronto
Have been going to Hemingways on and off for 20+ years. Wonderful service, decent food and inexpensive drinks. Amazing rooftop patio - glorious Toronto summers, and heated in the winter.
Hemingways in Yorkville exceeded expectations with its delicious US Thanksgiving dinner. The turkey was tender and flavorful, paired with traditional sides like creamy mashed potatoes, savory stuffing, and tangy cranberry sauce. The rooftop ambiance and attentive service made the meal even more enjoyable. Perfect for a festive celebration!
Be prepared for the mandatory 20% tip if youre in a group. So even if the service is terrible (which it is) youre still paying 20 freaking percent!
Beautiful place in the Yorkville neighborhood, lively atmosphere and dishes of absolute goodness and quality
Great location on Cumberland! Happening hotspot for casual pub fare with a cool patio vibe. Heated (somewhat) in winter, cooled in summer. Something for everyone on the menu and variety of daily special feature items. Fries are good. Portions are decent. On a recent visit after several years, food was ok, not amazing not bad, just middle of the road. Ambience was good for a casual pub vibe, per usual. Service friendly but slow. My sesame ginger chicken wrap was ok, but a bit bland. Needs more of that ginger hit and some kind of Asian umami to take It from ok to WOW. I thought Jerk chicken was an odd pick for a sesame ginger wrap which on paper, is typically a more Asian than Caribbean flavour profile. Even the Jerk spice was super mild and almost undetected. I ordered a Caesar and was asked if I wanted mild or spicy. I said mild, but got spicy. Waitress offered to replace it but I said it was fine. Didnt want to wait. My one friend oohed and aahed over her fish tacos so would recommend these. Would go back but would go more for convenient location if in the area and just want easy casual drinks vs fancy or upscale.
Never disappoints! Servers are always kind and hilarious. Patios are great to enjoy Toronto s Yorkville. Nachos are always a must! Good for a catch up or large gathering. Always a fun place to meet for sporting events as everyone is in the spirit!
This place gets points for location. Service was slow, food was ok but its a great affordable option when in Yorkville.... And a chill vibe
pretty good but nothing special, especially for the prices. oddly put off by the lacklustre commitment to the new zealand/aotearoa theme
Great outdoor experience even in the winter! Casual spot for dates, hangouts in Yorkville, not overpriced.
Typical bar. Lots of tables for big groups. Beer for four people was about 20$. Quite loud and busy.
Location is good. Prices have been jacked up. Great atmosphere but the food is horrible. Just go for pints after work.
Lamb burger with goat cheese is terrific, crispy chicken also good (slightly over cooked but better than under!) and the gouda and lemon garlic aoli on it are awesome. Considering how busy it was the food and drinks came in great time. Have been a few times and will be going back again.
Its a nice pub in the yorkville just to go casually with your friends or date. Sometimes they play live music which can be too loud, makes impossible to talk with your friends. But the overall food and the service is good. Food
Great place have been going here for years. Highly recommend!
The rooftop patio is covered and is warm in the winter. The pad thai was ok but it was not authentic. The fajitas were average.
Oof. I LOVE quiz nights at Hemingways, Quiz Master Jess and her team are fantastic. Id give them 5/5 stars. But Hemingways? Nope. I feel like every time the service gets worse and worse, and the last time was so bad that my friends and I are taking a loooong break from coming back. It took an HOUR for us to place our order; not get our food, place the order. I had to get up from the table and go speak with a server because I couldnt flag one down. It was busy, and Im sure theyre understaffed. When we finally got our food...part of the order was wrong! We explained the error and they took ALL the food away, including the one that was fine! More waiting. We finally got our food. It was fine, standard pub food. We asked for our bills ahead of the end of the quiz to avoid the crowd. The bills were wrong! We had them correct them, paid, and then my friend pointed out the bills were STILL wrong and wed been overcharged! So after an hour wait to order, getting the wrong food, waiting again...we got charged extra for the privilege. Ill follow the trivia team elsewhere because I wont go back otherwise!
Great service.
Good spot, good bar food.
They have no hospitality, me and my friends were trying to have a good time after class and they found a hard time finding a table to serve us and after a long time of wait the bartender/server took 20 minutos to take our order, and she was clearly ignoring our table by serving other people and passing by our table, a staff member said her name was mamy. Horrible service!
First time I went there it was nice, but the second it was SO bad. The worst customer service I saw. We were a big group and I understand it s difficult to allocated everybody, but they were so rude to us. They never came to the table, we have to beg! I felt so bad there that I think I m never coming back again. I definitely do not recommend
I came her for brunch before watching a game with friends. We were all very happy with our meals although it is important to note that the max and cheese portion was quite small. The prices are very fair and the vibes are good.
Server was great but whoever the hostess was on Sunday seemed deeply angry that she had to do her job. I asked for a table and she acted like I had interrupted her. Consider someone else to greet patrons.
Lots of space, they accommodated a group of 12 late on a Friday night which we very much appreciated. Can t speak to their food but service and drinks are great.
Went for Seinfeld trivia night, I know it was busy but food was disappointing. Had pad Thai was pale in color, some noodles were hard, chicken was dry and pad Thai flavor was light. Shrimp on pad Thai and crunchy peanuts were good. This is a $20 dish and I dont think it was worth that. I had a delicious spicy Cesar to drink. Venue and Atmosphere was great for the event I attended. Ive never sat in the lower bar area before so that was nice to discover. I really enjoy the patio here as well.
Trivia here was so so fun! Enjoyed the themed drinks!
Very good value for money, we ate upstairs it was nice
Great vibe. A good place to hang out with friends and have a few drinks
Top notch service from door to table to checkout Love the heated patio Thank you so much for hosting us
Worst experience ever. The food was bland, service lacked heart and the trivia tickets said it starts at 6 while the fineprint says 7. Worst possible way to spend your time and money. 0/10. Would not recommend.
Great breakfast!
Had to book it earlier to appease my guests and their time; was still was able to get a Thanksgiving Dunch today. It was unbelievably good. Service was outstanding. I moved back closer to this area of Toronto after 15 years, and Hemingways doesnt seem to have lost its charm. RIP to Mr. McSkimming. What a great place and lasting landmark. A dynasty to those that love the game -or really sport in general. Cheers!
Best restaurant Thanksgiving dinner weve had in Toronto!
We had a wonderful time. Kiwis in Canada at a Kiwi themed bar.
We come here all the time, mostly because its convenient location. We always get a prompt service, and you get what you pay for. Great place for a casual hang out with friends.
Attended a LOTR trivia night. Quiz master Jess was excellent and the service for drinks was very prompt and easy. The nachos could do with some improvement, was definitely not worth $25.
I went there around 7pm on a Friday and it was quite crowded, but I was given a seat on the rooftop. A great sense of freedom. As someone who doesnt usually drink beer, the strength was just right, and I enjoyed the chicken wrap and onion rings as a side dish. The staff often come by to ask how Im doing, and even though the store is outdoors, there arent any large insects flying around. I dont think the price is too high either. Also, the security guy is nearly 2m tall and has ridiculously thick arms, so I dont think he will cause any trouble inside the store.
The service is good, the food is just Ok.
The ambience is good but crowded. if you re looking for a nice place to spend a time with friends in Yorkville this place is fantastic.
Only had drinks
This restaurant is nothing special. It only has clout because it is situated in yorkville. The food is mediocre and generic, the fries taste like they are from costco. You can easily find a restaurant that has better food/service and atmosphere in Toronto for a better price.
The nachos were a disappointment. While the flavors were enjoyable, the vegetable toppings were overly large and made it difficult to eat. A little more chopping would have significantly improved the overall experience
I always get the Jambalaya and I love it. The atmosphere is great but the service is consistently a bit slow. Last time I went as a party of three and our dishes came out staggered (some food got cold as we waited for one of our parties dishes).
Hemmingways is a reliable, comfort food, home away from home, for me.
Drinks were good, food not so much. We had popcorn shrimp for starters & they were good. Trivia night was well done & a lot of fun!
I really like this place, great atmosphere on the patio. Food is okay, and inexpensive. Not a massive choice but nice enough. Nice serving staff.
This was a good restaurant. The Lamb Burger was EVERYTHINGGGG! I definitely enjoyed it! I forgot what drink I got, but it was the drink of the season (?) it was on tap, but super sweet and delicious!
Buttermilk chicken sandwich was great. Raspberry lemonade cocktail perfect too. Boyfriend got the kiwi burger and loved it as well. We both got Cesar salads and the dressing was sour/tasted like it had gone bad. Other than that, food and drinks and service was great. Would still recommend.
Love this place. Great atmosphere, the nachos are amazing
Pretty loud
Good space and atmosphere. The upstairs patio bar was pretty well laid out and a good atmosphere with easy access to the bar but also good amount of room around to spread out.
Why dont you answer the phone? I have tried different times of the day and no one answers. Right now I am trying 3:22pm no answer and it says mailbox full. Also you used to post the daily menu on the website and now you dont.
What New Zealand looks like once they murdered the majority of the Maori population. There is no location across Toronto that is more mid than this spot.
Great food. The fries were incredible. The breakfast hash was quite surprising. A beautiful mix of flavors that made every bite different from the last and an absolute experience. The service was slow. Food
This bar is absolutely adorable! I ve been multiple times now and it never disappoints. They have a beautiful covered rooftop patio with so much seating. Heated in the winter. Drinks and food are very reasonably priced and the food is fantastic. Everything from classic pub favourites to NZ classics. I will continue to come back whenever I m in the area.
Good lunch, the rooftop patio was great. Id go back.
Love the food and the vibes. Great staff and always a good crowd. The only minor complaint is that it gets so loud. Not much to absorb sound in the areas Ive sat in the past.
The food was great, although there didn t appear to be a lot of New Zealand choices on the menu, as most of the food could be found at most restaurants. Also, I asked for no onions on my burger and it came with onions, so I told the waiter that and as he was taking it back to the kitchen, he spilt the balsamic vinaigrette from my salad on my skirt. Aside from that, they were accommodating and quick which was good.
It was OK Not the same has it used to be Our server was great Our drinks not so much Food was OK...took a while before we got our food
Thank you all so much for your hospitality and understanding during the celebration of life. Cheers
Great location. The patio was excellent with a great atmosphere. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. Prices are reasonable similar to Boston Pizza prices. Food was mixed. Fish from the Fish & Chips was over cooked, similar story with the Club Sandwich. Lamb curry was very good. The drinks, service and atmosphere were great but the food was only average at best. Would definitely go again. Kid-friendliness: Took my 17yr old and there were some other children at around 7pm. Adult only after 9:30pm
good food great service
We sat on the rooftop, which was pleasant. The main floor area was very loud.
The service here is quite bad. The waitress put the plate on the table in a dissatisfied manner, did not come to refill the water even though the glass was empty, and her way of speaking was quite dissatisfied. When asking anything, she did not even ask if the food was okay. I was quite disappointed because my friend recommended this restaurant and said it was very good.
Its been years. Nothing much has changed other than the portions are a bit smaller now.
A little bit expensive but I must say that if the food was delicious, the service was particularly excellent! The girls were extremely friendly and professional. Thats why I recommend the place.
Pretty good place also trivias are fun
Maddie and Kayla were the best bartenders/ servers, were so accommodating and were so nice about my restrictions, some of the nicest bartenders I ve ever had an encounter with, anyplace is lucky to have them! Thank you for experience!
Maddie and Kayla are the nicest bartenders and recommended the best cocktails ever, as a service industry professional I m very impressed by the amazing staff here
Nice place, great service and very friendly staff, good food, good variety of drinks
Great place for hanging out, good food!
Great restaurant vibes. The lamb was too chewy for me personally.
A classic place with a patio. Nice chicken wings. Decent price.
Dietary restrictions: Theyre were some gluten-free meal. Food
I have a disability with impacts my speech and motor functions. When I arrived tonight I was told to leave by the head bouncer with no explanation. The experience left me physically and emotionally shaken, and I implore you to think twice before going here!
What a fantastic place! The food is first rate and the service excellent.
Excellent food and service, suggestion, always ask for white sauce for the fries, it is delicious
Good drinks. Food was ok. Good customer service.
The jambalaya was awesome.
Went for a trivia night. Food was pretty standard, service was pretty good. Room did get very hot and humid.
Deserves a reno, but otherwise, its a nice spot. Food and drinks were good!
Very busy, service was not as efficient as previous times. Food was ok.
This restaurant was just ok. The service was slow, but the server was friendly. Very generic food, burger was dry. I also ordered a nonalcoholic Raspberry Sour, but it just tasted like pineapple juice. I like pineapple, do I didnt mind, but dont order it expecting berry flavour.
This place was okay. I ordered a jerk chicken burrito bowl which was not really jerk chicken at all lol. The fries were really crispy though! Service was kind of slow but I get it because it was busy. It felt a bit dirty in there as well not sure if I d go again.
Great drinks great people great prices amazing location. Winner all around
Top notch top floor patio.
Great restaurant super close to the Royal Ontario Museum, I stopped in before heading to the museum. I ordered the Plant-Based Chicken Burger with poutine and it was great. My only complaint is the service is a bit slow. It took me 20 minutes after finishing my food to get the check which was a bit annoying but overall still a good experience.
Possibly the least flavourful burger I ve ever eaten. Fries were alright.
Good service awesome lamb burger but the breaded chicken fingers and the sweet fried potatoes were way too dry , a bit disappointed and price wise too high for the quality of food
I have now organized two events for my work on the patio at Hemingways and they have been so easy to work with and accommodating. The space is awesome, and everyone who came loved it there. The food was also great. I also wanted to give a special shout out to our server Ben, who happened to be working at both events. Awesome guy, did an amazing job, even with 50+ people ordering drinks and food (and in 30+ degree heat the second event). Cant recommend Hemingways and the team enough!
We were all very satisfied with our food! The menu has a variety of meals to choose from to meet all needs. Although, not sure what makes it a New Zealand style restaurant. The atmosphere was very fun and electric and the service was great!
Service is slow Dietary restrictions: Good amount of gluten free options available Food : 2/5 |
the place is nice, the staff isnt, they presented us with the bill with the tips already inserted chosen by the staff without even notifying us, really rude!
A solid three. Cool name. When booking, I chose from the options: sports, bar and hall, the latter, but they also broadcast football loudly there. In terms of food, there was nothing special; the leg of lamb had almost no taste, and in the kiwi burger, I expected at least a little kiwi. Toilets are at pub level, not restaurant level. And again, if you ask for a reason when booking, then you need to select a table accordingly. Prices are high, especially for drinks.
As a Kiwi in a restaurant like this, it was a very good experience. The owner is great guy and service is awesome. Me being a big boy that loves food from New Zealand the lamb is at the top of my list great food and drinks were up to par. Lucas, Wellington NZ.
We ordered a pitcher, but it wasnt a pitcher. More than half of a pint from that pitcher was just foam. We showed the server when we poured the beer into our glasses. She then refilled our pitcher with the foam from the tap(I saw that with my two eyes.) The beer was totally flat, and we were very disappointed. We will never come back.
Went here with my co-workers for lunch. We sat on the back patio. It was quite nice. The service was slow given how many people were around. I ordered the lamb burger and sweet potato fries. The lamb burger was decent but the sweet potato fries were gross and undercooked. The lemonade was much too sweet and needed to be watered down.
Food seems to be just ok, atmosphere is good. The Pad Thai is fairly flavourless, do not recommend. Also, one of the hostesses is on a mega power trip, and it s the opposite of inviting.
Mariam was extremely rude. Yelled at us to leave and yelled at her staff in front of us. And she is a manager
Everything was great we thought but after an hour we (my family including me) had GI issues. We came there for lunch as suggested by the lady at the Royal Ontario Museum. So after lunch we went back to the museum but after about an hour we all had some kind of Gi discomfort/ Gi issues (lower GI for both adults and the daughter had both upper and lower issues).. good thing the museum has a good wash room. We left the museum and after we returned to our room we e tried calling the establishment but unfortunately the vm was full and unable to leave a message. My husband tried again but no one answered. We didn t have anything besides the food from the restaurant.
I didnt go in, but it looks good to me
Awesome atmosphere. I got the Jerk Chicken Burrito and the Tom Collins for my drink, both were great choices. Everyone at my table (8 of us) were satisfied with the service and with the food they ordered. We were upstairs on the 3rd level where there s plenty of room for larger parties.
Had lunch, with two of us, on the upper patio. Its a great spot, all the staff were friendly and helpful, and the location was great. We had the chicken sandwich and jerk chicken burrito. Both were tasty, with good-sized portions. Highly recommend it for a fun meal. Good for big groups, too.
The curried lamb was delicious. I highly recommend this place.
Has not changed in 30 years. Still a great patio in Yorkville
An institution that just keeps going and going and going ;)
im heavily tattooed and maryam made fun of my tattoos in front of me and to the security guard saying why she doesnt know why somebody would get tattoos in certain spots of their body (im leaving slurs that she mentioned out) and then when i called she continued to disrespect me and act like it never happened after admitting to it. i was there to spend money and she ruined it for me and my 3 friends. i dont recommend coming here if you want to be judged disrespected. all the other workers were amazing except her when she made that comment. i wont be returning and neither will any of my friends. absolutely diabolical behaviour from her end.
Justin was an excellent server! Prompt service, good vibes ..
Kiwi bar with lively atmosphere. The lamb shank was not cooked through. I ll Get something else next time.
My experience here was not so great me and my friend visited in the afternoon and asked for a table on the side, the server told us those table are for 4 people and cannot make any adjustments. Even though the restaurant was half empty and they could ve made adjustments. However the two people who just came after us they just moved on their own and sat on the fourth people table and nobody said nothing. It felt unfair and I would prefer a more accommodating place. The food was OK, we tried the fajitas and the vegan burger. It wasn t bad, but it wasn t great either. However, their brownie with ice cream was amazing. I truly liked it and I think that s why I m giving a three out of five stars for food. Atmosphere was like usual patio atmosphere however, the people sitting next to us were super loud and it was hard for me to hear my friend so maybe it s just that one time we went, it wasn t that great.
Vegetarian options: Salads, pizza, pasta Food
Cool place for a nightcap. Was there in the middle of the week so pretty quiet.
Average food
They don t even see you sharing hand all 20 minutes to order a single drink in a really calm time of work
Amazing food. Lamb shank was really good! Highly recommend this place :) Food : 5/5
This place is an utter joke. Picture a college bar like environment on steroids. Best part? At the price of Four Seasons. We paid $85 dollars for two watery drinks and burned calamari , and to be seated in plastic chairs that you wouldnt even find at a coin laundromat. LOL oh Toronto.
It was an amazing experience the food, drinks and aesthetics was incredible and I plan on being back very soon. A special shout out to Ben (server) who made our experience extra special. We were impressed by his energy, and his professionalism was fantastic!
This restaurant is dope! Patio vibes are a must. And the service was amazing for this private event. BEN our server is the KING OF THE BAR, he took care of 50+ ppl and appreciate the customer service!
The patio here is nice and the place has a great vibe overall. It s not an upscale restaurant but something fun and sporty! The food is good and service is quick. Check them out!
