Great family diner for breakfast and lunch
I love a good local greasy spoon. Firstly, the space is tiny, just a few booths and counter seats. And it’s no frills - a straightforward menu of diner classics cooked behind the counter. But the staff are friendly and the food is tasty and that’s all that matters. The smoked meat sandwiches were fantastic. Watching the potatoes being cooked, we couldn’t help but order a side of home fries. Overall, we had a great experience and will definitely be back when we’re in the area.
A fun environment, just like a classic diner you’d see in the movies. The service was good, especially the young guy who was super friendly. That said, their opening time was a bit questionable. It says they start at 8, but it seemed like even they weren’t sure when they’d actually open. The food was tasty, and the coffee was fresh, but the smell of bacon stuck to us so much that even our underwear reeked of it. We had to wash everything afterward! The place looks very affordable and cheap but in reality it is not!
Old style Diner and nothing greasy about this spoon. Ordered bacon & eggs and steak & eggs. Meaty bacon and a perfectly cooked, tender breakfast steak. Generous portions. The coffee is easy to take and the service is friendly. A few booths, one table for two and counter seating. One of those little gems with family tradition. Sorry it took me so long to find it.
This place is amazing, food is incredible, vibe is great, prices are too. It’s very small so don’t go with a big group unless you’re okay being separated. Service is good too, staff is really nice. Didn’t want to leave a review as I would love to gatekeep this place but every time someone from out of town visits I take them here and they all love it! Get the smoke meat, it’s really their best thing, the smoke meat and eggs is really good as are their sandwiches.
The smoked meat sandwich hit the spot! Very nice restaurant with limited seating. The layout is neat because you can see right into the kitchen. Would love to try more of their items next time
It was a pleasure having my traditional breakfast inside Avenue Open Kitchen. 65+ years in the business and I can say that they still got it!!
Best meat sandwich in Toronto with authentic feel. Generous portions and friendly service. The smoked meat is always on point.
Avenue Open Kitchen is a gem of a diner, exuding charm and warmth from the moment you step inside. From the inviting ambiance to the friendly staff, every visit feels like coming home. The menu boasts a delightful array of breakfast classics, but it's the eggs and bacon that steal the show every time. Cooked to perfection, each bite is a symphony of flavor that leaves you craving more. What truly sets this establishment apart is not just the exceptional food, but also the impeccable service. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure every guest feels welcomed and cared for. With its unbeatable combination of incredible food, top-notch service, and cozy vibe, Avenue Open Kitchen never fails to exceed expectations. A five-star experience that keeps me coming back for more.
Classic lovely staff and great food
Food was fantastic, service wonderful. I had the smoked meat reuben with dijon.
A hidden gem!
Just like the movies. Little diner with cozy atmosphere, great service and large portions. Went for breakfast and had bacon and eggs. A great start to my day here in Toronto
Great little hole in the wall, fast and friendly service, Ill definitely go back!
Got the smoked meat and chicken salad sandwich. Great prices. Staff are great and great prices as well. Would definitely come back.
Small and cozy like a diner but soooo much better. Service is 5 stars. These boys know how to cook AND how to serve food. Great sandwiches, breakfast and burgers. This place is gem! Coming back here for sure.
Great breakfast. Egg, cheese, and bacon sandwich was very delicious. Host was super friendly and it was overall a welcoming environment.
Great neighborhood spot. It s our regular go to
One of the last open kitchens left. Toronto
A chill low key place suitable for a Sunday morning The food quality was ok but not great Food
Awesome. Staff, food, comfort. Its all in there!
Great spot, greasy spoon vibes, fantastic food. Also excellent customer service by Val. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to get an old school dining experience . Keep up the great work fellas
Great little breakfast/lunch spot. Very friendly staff, classic dinner style
Great prices, awesome brunches, genuinely nice people :) what else could we ask for? Will be coming here often Food
Great smoke meat sandwich and the poutine was awesome. Generous portions. Service was great. Greek family owned. Ill try the dutch western omelette and club sandwich next time.
Home fries are homie Waiter was awesome the guy in the construction hat looked at me weird .. 5 Stars
I loved it! I am a little claustrophobic, so until we moved to a booth, I wasnt sure I could stay... I am so happy I did. This modest and quaint space gives big service, big servings, and big savings! The price was very reasonable for the delicious breakfasts we had. Fabulous!
Went for breakfast, was fantastic! Especially since I requested my bacon to be cooked well, lol, they listened! Noticed other foods being made, while sitting at the counter seating ( has booth seating as well ), it all looked great, especially the Greek Salad. Small establishment but very well run. Friendly staff, care about your happiness with your order. Its a bit pricey, but its worth it.
If you want to dine in a typical diner, you should venture here. Uncomplicated and delicious - just how you imagine a typical diner.
Great hidden gem
Posted Hours are not correct. Call ahead.
Literally the nicest staff I have ever encountered at any restaurant. So sweet and great breakfast foods!
Had a great bacon and egg breakfast. Fast friendly service. My one son arrived late, had his breakfast in front of him in less than 5 minutes!!!!
Fantastic neighbourhood gem tucked away right in the middle of downtown. They serve the best club sandwich Ive ever tried in the city; portions are good and prices are fair. Staff is very friendly and efficient and the atmosphere makes you feel right at home at this family run diner. Excited to come back for more! A note that it does get busy at lunchtime and there may be a wait.
We love coming here for breakfast. The staff is fabulous and friendly.
Kid-friendliness: Sii Food
Perfect Breakfast or Lunch Spot. Friendly Service and very delicious food.
Avenue Open Kitchen surpassed all expectations! I went with four people, and everyone enjoyed the food. It was a gem of a find. The vegetarian options were great as well. The only small niggle I had about the space is that the booths were too small for five people to fit in. I had the Greek omelette and the vegetarian breakfast sandwich. Yummy!
If you are looking for authentic old school Canadian food, this is the place. Open since 1959, they feed tourists, locals, construction workers, students to steak and eggs and French toast and more in abundance. A real treasure.
By income
One of the best of the remaining old school diners in Toronto. Always a good meal, with excellent burgers, gyros and greek salad.
Amazing food and service. This is truly a go-to. Lo recomiendo
Great spot. Great service. The guys are friendly and welcoming and meals are comforting. Chicken clubhouse is my favorite. Worth it!
Great open kitchen diner with awesome breakfast, four stars instead of five because we felt rushed from the moment we sat down till the bill came. I understand they want to turn over tables quickly to make more money but there wasnt anyone waiting for a table so no idea why they pushed us to leave. Out of habit I guess.
Gosh that Rouben is the best deli sandwich I ve ever tasted, simple yet perfect .
Delicious, quick, friendly, cozy atmosphere.
Was gonna get a slice, but found this great little rest on the way today, tastey lunch(chicken souvlaki plate)amazing, friendy staff, will absolutely return, next time Im working in area!!
Great food, it really is an open kitchen! The burger was really good. 5/5 would recommend. Def will come back
Best diner in downtown Toronto. Breakfast/brunch is always top notch, super friendly owners with great service. The space fills up fast so it s best to get there a little earlier in the day!
Had the Challah French toast with sausage and coffee. Service was at the counter, quick, and food was great. Nice little deli/Diner with smoked meat sandwiches that looked fantastic.
Stood in line like an idiot while the staff talked past me and around me. I waited in line for about three minutes and then the waiter operating the cashier literally talked past me to ask the guy who had just walked in how many people he was coming in with. Waited another two minutes and asked him politely if I could place an order to go. He said to give him a minute, then proceeded to help two other customers, wipe down the counter, straighten the menus, make eye contact with me, and then go take someone elses order. Waited for another three minutes and then left, so I have no idea if they would have eventually gotten around to helping me or if they were making a point of not helping me. The bit where he straightened the menus seemed like he was trying to send a message considering they looked the same before and after he did it.
Fine, a greasy spoon, lousy service but whatever
Best breakfast meals in toronto
The take-out food is PIPING HOT!!!! EVEN THE LENTIL SOUP IS BOILING! LOVE THIS PLACE!!! PLUS the Chicken Rice soup comes with MASSIVE chunks of chicken that you will NOT find in the lentil soup!!!
What an awesome find. Everything was beyond perfect. Food was so fresh and fast. Waiter was extremely organized and friendly. I almost went with the marry me tip amount. I ll be returning when I m in the big city
Lovely little place, had a great vibe. The staff was very friendly and the food was delicious! I had the Reuben and it was perfect.
Holy Kamoly Batman!! This pastrami-stacked masterpiece on rye is so perfectly crafted, it hits hard on flavor and the touch of Dijon mustard is a perfect note, leaving your taste buds applauding for an encore. Also quite filling! Thank you so much!
Awesome place: big portion and delicious food
Love this place. Big portions and good value to your meal!
Great Old School Diner close to Downtown!
Generous portions reasonable price
Great intimate atmospwhere, I love the food and the great staff
Unassuming breakfast diner-y restaurant, great for post night out debrief over eggs.
A classic deli experience for those seeking a more traditional style diner. They have a great montreal smoked meat sandwich. Food : 5/5
godly, from a montrealer who came to watch ufc
Great great service:), delicious food, will forever be coming back!!
Last couple of times I ordered from Avenue Open Kitchen the food wasnt enjoyable. Both the roast beef sandwich and french fries + gravy was super salty and the meat was dry -not juicy like before. Food used to be far better prior to pandemic.
We loved it!
One of the best smoked meat & roast beef sandwiches I have ever had
The steak sandwich is always perfect.also very good Montreal smoked meat. No coleslaw at a deli does not make sense to me though. Cheers!
Best diner
This is the only place Ive found downtown with such a great smoked meat sandwich. Good prices and good breakfast. Service extremely fast and friendly.
Enjoy it
If you want some decent, affordable diner food, look no further. Sitting space is in a bit of short supply, so you might have to wait a bit if youre showing up on a Sunday morning (or settle for a seat at the counter). Im personally a fan of the breakfast club sandwich, and even though it usually fills me up, admittedly Id rather have more sandwich and less homefries - even if theyre some real good homefries. Free refills on the diner-quality coffee make up for that a bit.
Amazing! Been coming here for the last few years. Best smoked meat sandwich in the city
Great staff, great food, at great value.
Better come hungry!! Tasty, insane value and monster portions!!
The absolute best smoked meat sandwich in the city. A real old school deli. Not many places like this anymore or anyplace. Huge portions. You can just tell there is quality and love in what they serve. When a smoked meat sandwich needs no mustard you came to the right deli. I will be back soon!
I ordered breakfast peameal bacon and egg and coffee. A total of about $20. When I looked into it later, I learned that peameal bacon is a dish unique to Canada. They used to cover bacon with yellow beans, but now they cover it with corn. I ate it for the first time and it was juicy and delicious. I intended it to be breakfast, but it ended up being brunch because it was so big. The clerk was very kind and a very handsome guy. The location of the store is not on the main street, so its a little hard to find, but I was able to find it without any trouble thanks to Google.
Cheap and cheerful. Try the smoked meat.
Fast and friendly service, clean, generous portions, good home cooked food, good value. Would definitely recomend.
Great little diner. Seating is limited so get there early if you want a booth. Steak and eggs was great, and the coffee was good. Will come here again for that breakfast hit.
Great breakfast, friendly staff, and a touch on the expensive side to keep it from getting full marks, may very well be worth it. Edit: price be damned, 5 stars.
Excellent diner just west of Spadina. Good food and quick service.
Fantastic breakfast spot with fantastic people that work there! As soon as i walked in I was greeted and sat. Out came out the menu with a cup of coffee and a cup of water shorty after. My breakfast was the sausage and egg breakfast which comes with three eggs done anyway you like, four sausages, potatoes and a couple pieces of toast. Its alot of food for $13.99 and that included the cup of coffee! Highly recommend this place if youre in Toronto.
Honestly great place, good people serving and great efficiency they all know what theyre doing and how to do it well. Its a nice hole in the wall place atmosphere is great, of course free coffee refills as it should be is great! Oh and the food is good as well of course the cooks do a great job and fair prices!
Used to live down the street 10+ years ago and loved it. Whenever Im even remotely close i stop in, nothing has really changed. Younger guy running it now and doing an amazing job. Same food, same energy, great service, delicious food and good prices. One of the only still left of its kind
THE SOUPS ARE TO DIE FOR ESPECIALLY THE LENTIL SOUP!!!
Best breakfast we had while in Toronto. I had never had peameal bacon before and it was a revelation. The French toast was also out of this world. Highly recommend!!! Food : 5/5
Rich breakfast, very well served. Friendly staff
Our friends took us here and we couldn t be more happy that they did! The burgers are out of this world and their portions are as generous as their staff. I can see how this place has been around since 1959! We plan on stopping for lunch before we leave to go back home to Niagara Falls.
My new Tuesday lunch spot. Tried the burger and the club house, and they were some of the best in the city. Going to work on the deli sandwiches next.
what a gem!
All day breakfast. Excellent service!
This place never disappoints!! Best deal is the large pizza with 2 toppings and 2 cans of pop! We ve had it many times.
Very basic flavours, burgers were oily.
Walking up to this place just reminds you of a classic mom-and-pop greasy spoon joint serving up homemade style breakfasts. Service was fast and friendly and the food itself was cooked well and tastes pretty good. The only let down for me was the fact they didn t really have any hungry man or lumberjack breakfast options where you get multiple meats or other food from the standard bacon and eggs. I could have added it a-la carte but that would have pushed up a breakfast to $25-30 which just seems too much. The portion was decent but nothing special for the price. The lunch items look good and more in line with what I would expect to pay elsewhere so will probably try one next time but if looking for a cheap classic breakfast will seek out other options.
A true gem in Spadina!!! They have nice warm homemade-style diner food! Its Greek-owned, and the staff are lovely. You must check it out at least once. Food
Tasteless food despite simple items. Gave a side of three slices of tomato to replace bread for my gluten intolerance. The home fries were inedible. Really confused why this place has good reviews. Maybe it was a bad day but wow.
Went here 3 days in a row. Breakfast is fantastic. Old classic diner. You cant go wrong with the Montreal smoked meat with eggs. Or the western omelette. You also get unlimited drip coffee.
Went for the first time and we loved it. Great staff, very attentive. Food was stellar. We will definitely be back again. Wish we found this place ages ago
Great place, really yummy food.
Ok. So. The wife and I were leaving downtown Toronto heading to Oakville. On the mess to get to the Gardiner we veered off for a bagel shop. Looking across the street I saw Avenue. Im in food and beverage, and just knew. I pivoted, and walked across. Throwback to a proper deli. Nothing changed on the inside, The menu seemed similar. I ordered chicken salad and tuna salad w fries. Omg. This place throws down. Exactly what I was craving. The young man at the front (2 Sundays ago) was top notch service. Every time Im in Toronto Im coming here. Well done. As a bartender and industry professional of 20 years, I can tell you their food, service, location, love for the community.... should be supported. I know I will.
Small but mighty. Kinda like a MA and PA restaurant, good food, good service and friendly staff.
Went there for the first time today, it was so good. I would definitely go back
Best classic breakfast around and great service
So happy this place is still here .. one of the last of the truly great Diner joints in the Downtown area.
Stuck at Billy Bishop for the day and needed some real breakfast. These guys did the job! Very much worth the trek into the city.
Good breakfast with abundant dishes. Coffee with little flavor, as is common in Canada
Great little open kitchen. Foods great. Coming again
Mom and pop shop old school diner style. Big portions, pretty good price, quick turnover and getting food.
One of my fav places
I use to go there every day when i worked across the street at metro taxi . Then we moved . But always think of this place they seemed so friendly and always a smile and friendly words made my day .
One of the best Diners youll visit in Toronto, great staff, great food. Quick service with an open kitchen.
Great breakfast place in the area. I really like the Montreal smoked meat omelette and the great morning vibe.
My favourite and probably the only consistently good breakfest in the city! This is the only diner anywhere near us and by far my faaavourite breakfast. The staff are also so nice and funny and the food is always the best and the price is pretty great for being downtown!
Cool place cool dudes excellent food! Smoked meat and western omelette both delicious!
Great place for Montreal smoked meat!
These guys are awesome. Amazing old school diner in the heart of the city. Fast, reliable, awesome. Wheelchair accessibility: Steps in front
We got 2 montreal smoked meat sandwiches and coffee to go. The sandwiches were delicious, the service was friendly and they got everything ready pretty quickly. There are some dining spots inside and they were all packed at 9am on a weekday. We ll be back to try out other items on the menu!
I have been to many fancy restaurants in toronto, but the best place is here I think. The foods are delicious and the owner is really kind. I think I can go here everyday morning before I go to work. The food is not that expensive and its actually delicious. I miss this place.
Great place, down to earth. Really friendly owners and just a pleasant place to drink coffee and eat a big breakfast. Nothing fancy - that s why I come here.
Simply delicious! great atmosphere.. love the service. 100% recommended
Stopped in here in a Thursday morning for breakfast and so glad we did! It s a small hole in the wall but what a gem! This is a classic city diner! The sugar pourer and mismatched salt and pepper shakers are so nostalgic and typical of a small diner. The open kitchen is legit!! We sat at the counter (there were no empty seats, a great sign)! The server was super nice and attentive! I ordered the cheese omelet and home fries with rye toast. I asked for the home fries to be well done but that was not really in the cards since the flat top grill was constantly in use and the home fries are legit potatoes with no oil so they d have to cook for so long! The cook explained it to me after and i appreciated that he doesn t add anything to them. The omelet was good, exactly what you d hope for at a diner. My mom loved her BEC on rye! The coffee is ground fresh on site and was good. The prices are reasonable and you can really feel the love from these guys!
One of the best diners in town. We used to go here as a team to get lunch and it was wonderful each time we went, the prices are very reasonable and the waiter is such a nice lad!
Great breakfast, and friendly, helpful service! Definitely recommend!
Mouthwatering and perfect!
Prompt service, great cheese omelette
Best breakfast and Clubhouse in the city
Nice little place food was fresh staff were very friendly and attentive.Would definetly recommend.
I brought my mom here yesterday, and I was blown away. The service and food are top-notch Do yourself a favour and try this local gem.
What a fantastic experience! The diner-look is brilliant. I love sitting at the counter and eating my breakfast while watching the chefs cook their scrumptious food. I highly recommend this place. A true gem in the heart of downtown Toronto!
This place is awesome. People are very friendly.
I like this place! Fun to watch the staff preparing the food. Super friendly energy. Food is good and portions are large. For two of us to have a big lunch cost $29 before tip.
Amazing place!
Small family-run place with great food and great service. Highly recommend for a good breakfast (thats what I was there for).
Absolutely recommended. Fast and friendly service, good food, well-measured portions. Everything you would want from this type of restaurant.
BBB compliant though, the food is seriously delicious and the coffee is refillable, whatever you want.
Will never go here again service was terrible
kids and i just devoured peameal, egg & cheese sammies. they were amazing! small diner with one guy knocking out breakfast orders left and right. this place is great!
Smoked meat was delicious
Awesome place, thanks Val
This place is a gem. Popped in a couple of times while in town for work and the service, food and price was amazing, kind of what youd hope a funky little old school style breakfast place might be. Recommend the montreal smoked beef and eggs.
The staff (or owner?) was great - very friendly and accomodating! And the FOOD!!!! Tasted awesome, with very generous servings! I look forward to dining here again, when I am in the area!
Love this place... the neighbourhood is changing around them.. again. Classic diner well worth getting off Spadina for a bite
Relaxed deli, good sandwiches and friendly staff
Good food and service.
Amazing people
Great breakfast food. Big portions. Vegetarian options: Its breakfast. Lots of vegetarian options.
Very small, food was good but we all had the same breakfast yet all 3 were different. Missing items on 2 of the 3 sandwiches. I think it was called the avenue club.
Great service and excellent food. Reasonably priced traditional diner/deli. Will certainly be back.
Tremendous
Very good Smoke meat and Pealmeal bacon sandwich. Very reasonable price. Nice little restaurant.
Discovered this place on a whim and loved it. Unpretentious spot with great breakfast/brunch items at reasonable prices. Really enjoyed the simplicity of the diner-esque decor. The eggs and peameal bacon dish was great. Would recommend for quick in-and-out bites or for small groups.
Fast, cheap, and good diner food.
Anyone who would ever give this place a negative review is probably missing the point of this awesome little restaurant. The foods great, the people who work there are super-friendly, and its truly a last-of-its-kind counter-top diner experience in Downtown Toronto. Writing this review makes me want to go back there... so I will, right now.
Great place. Great service. Good food. Super small and quaint. Great quick mama and pops type shop.
Fabulous little restaurant great service super breakfast although everything else was good too....highly recommend
$32 for two breakfasts and no free coffee refills. I go to greasy spoons for the free refills FFS.
Always get Pastrami on Rye its the best! They do not skimp on meat and its moist, freshly cut and not too salty. My doggo cant walk past the place without stopping for a snack. Me, my husband and him share a sandwich. Definitely a great neighborhood diner spot, guys working there are really friendly too!
Love this place for all reasons!
I had a great time, the French toast was delicious and the team took great care of the customers! Thank you very much for the advice and this warm welcome. I will come back during my next visit to Toronto!!
Best smoked meat in town lots of meat i really enjoyed it.
Very authentic ~ super delicious!
Guys were friendly, I had a poutine and it was tasty. Good amount of cheese and gravy and fries were perfect. My friend had a chicken salad sandwich with fries and gravy. It was also quite good.
Great place for a really quick breakfast. Good food, great service!
Great breakfasts, friendly service, old school vibe. Hopefully the lunch specials (e.g. roast turkey!) make a comeback soon.
Very good, I got the breakfast club. It was a huge portion. Staff are friendly and the service was great. My only issue was some of the potatoes were undercooked. Would have been a 5 otherwise! I ll definitely return.
