2379 Queen St E, Toronto, ON M4E 3K2, Canada
Old-fashioned standby since 1952 with booth seating, classic Chinese eats & American fare.
Very affordable and delicious! How this place does not have a huge line out the door - I do not know. Everytime we visit from Vancouver - we always go to the goof. The goof is great!
We come here after our appointment. It wasn’t busy when we went, we were accommodated straight away. We knew what we want and everything was delicious most specially our go to fried rice and chicken wings it’s my daughter’s go to meal. It’s a very affordable pricing.
Have been going to The Goof for over 25 years, whenever I’m in the Beaches neighbourhood I try to make a point of stopping in for lunch or dinner. Excellent Chinese food. Raymond was an awesome waiter going back a few years, do miss the original setup of the restaurant which was a nice atmosphere all those years ago but food and the people working there are still great.
Have walked by a few times and last night the GF and I felt like eating Chinese food for dinner and walked over to Garden Gate. We just moved to the Beaches and checked google this place had good reviews. The restaurant had a patio which I have not seen in other Chinese food restaurants. The Service was excellent. The food was fantastic and came quickly. We had a great experience here. We will definitely come back and try some different dishes. Was very impressed when I notice they had breakfast on the menu and my favorite Eggs Benedict was only $14.00. You will not be disappointed.
Ok food and not too high prices considering the neighborhood. Food ordered: Crispy Shrimp dumplings Peking pork dumping
Enjoyed weekend brunch here. Vegetable Mapo Tofu was great. The price was friendly for the size of the dish.
Oh, the Goof: we love this joint. Is it the best Chinese-Canadian food you’ll ever have? No, but what it lacks in that department is abundantly made up for in charm and service. Can’t beat it for the price; we’ll definitely be return customers and will try some of their diner-style food as well.
Went for lunch with a friend. Service is fast and efficient. Prices were reasonable. The General Tao was average, had a lot of rice on the plate, could use a vegetable on he plate. Spring Roll was hot and crispy. Friend had Shrimp with Bok Choy which was delicious. Unfortunately we found a piece of plastic in the meal. Server inspected the plastic, confirmed it was but then made no effort to apologize or compensate in any way. It was a cool nostalgic Toronto restaurant but I will not return.
Ordered the chicken balls and rice with egg roll combo. The egg roll was noticeably burned and the rice tasted burnt as well, almost like it was old oil, which was unfortunate because if it werent for that I feel like recipe would be just right. I gave a 3 star instead of 2 because despite this, the chicken balls were unbelievably good. Not too much batter, tons of red sauce and very tasty. Please please please fix your oil situation
Its a decent greasy spoon. They serve Chinese food as well as some Western staples. The food is pretty good and the prices match that. Parking: There is street parking but it can be hard to find at times. This is Queen Street, so it can be busy. Kid-friendliness: There is food that kids will like.
Great food you can get a fresh well made meal for under $15 staff are super friendly and ambiance is really cool
We have heard such good things about this restaurant and have ordered the orange chicken a few times. First two times it was good but the last time it was tough and dried out even with the sticky sauce. But the worst was tonight. I ordered Wanton Soup with bbq pork. The soup stock tasted like coloured water. It had been watered down so bad it literally had NO flavour. Plus there were only 2 little pieces of pork and 4 wontons in a small container. That s it. Not even a piece of green onion. Also the lotus rice seemed like it was frozen and then microwaved!!! The rice was burnt onto the lotus leaf with it being hard and dried out. I had to try and scrape it off but couldn t so half of it went into the garbage. It was the same for both. I love sticky rice and have it at places all the time or buy it in bulk and steam at home. I ve never had this experience with any rice before. When I called about the soup, the restaurant didn t take any accountability and told me tastes fine to us even though all my family tasted the soup and agreed it tasted like warm water. What a waste of $25. Two tiny dried up lotus rice and a watered down so called wonton. That s it. And half went into the garbage. Now I m going to Wendy s drive through because I m starving. Very disappointed with the food and customer service. I will not be recommending unfortunately.
Serving good food since 1952 . Indeed. I remember Chinese food from the 1960 s and perhaps even the late 1950 s. Globs of chop suey smothered with some heavily corn-starched sauce. Or deep fried something or other. To my recollection, was no good Chinese food in that era. It was all mediocre or bad. Our dish of sweet and sour (there was no sour, just super sweet) chicken and pineapple (I couldn t find any pineapple) took us right back to that time. Oh, rice was not included.
Place was always my go to for lunches once every two weeks for the past 5 years fresh food crisp veg was great .recently past 6month some of my meal are not fresh they taste like they ve been microwave. Pretty nasty very disappointing that a place like this a staple of the beaches would raise there price and serve food of such low quality
Got food as take out the interior is plain but the exterior has been updated with signage retained.
We went there specifically for nostalgia reasons cuz they are known for their homemade Western style egg rolls in comparison to most restaurants who serve spring rolls! They didn t disappoint; was very good as was the service!! The restaurant has history and is affectionately known as the Goof as one of the lights burnt out and was always just known as that:)))) A real throwback
Had the orange chicken it was so salty it was good but Ill tell you I was dying at first after
Tasty and quick place for dinner in The Beaches. I like their menu with western and Chinese options. I went for their burger with home made patty and it was very yummy. Great spot to grab a quick bite before going to The Fox. Has a side patio too.
I think people only like this restaurant so much because its the only Chinese food beaches people have had, compared to other Chinese food for example around Spadina I think its just average. But if live in the Beaches and dont want to go that far then itll do.
Has been a while since we were there used to hang there years ago place seems to stay same.I had eggs Benedict and hubby all day breakfast it was ok did not like home fries boiled then slightly fried Chinese food looked good Food
Noodles came like a brick with a few veg on top. Chicken stank like it expired days ago. Careless. Never again.
Rice is burnt. Can t finish it
Great food and incredibly friendly service. Highly recommend the Garden Gate Fried rice and the Szechwan noodles. Absolutely delicious and incredible value for the price. We cannot wait to go back to try other dishes.
I dont feel this place values its customers. This is the second time I went to this place and the second time I was disappointed with the quality of food. I ordered their chicken choupsey combo item for takeout. The rice in it reeked of really old cooking oil. So do the other things on their combo items. I could barely take a bite. I had to throw the whole thing. Nothing tasted fresh. Everything was stale.
Classic diner and Chinese food all under one roof. A beaches legend
Always a fave! Great Can-Asian food, old school, nuclear S&S colours etc. Always fresh, big plates and small price tags! Vegetarian options: Half the menu! Dietary restrictions: Peanuts on site, but they will adjust other things to suit (glutens etc)
My familys favorite restaurant. For five generations.
Great selection of food at really good prices. Quick service and some really nice staff as well!
We decided to try out the restaurant based on the good reviews on google. We ordered a chop suey dish and a chow mein dish. The chop suey was bland, with the only vegetables being onion and celery, and the sweet and sour pork was of questionable quality and mostly breading. I took one bite of the egg roll and immediately spit it out as it tasted off. The filling was dark brown, almost like it was rotten. The chow mein was also bland with the only really edible parts being the chicken and shrimp. The noodles were overly fried and greasy. We ended up eating less than half of the meals. Maybe other dishes on the menu are better, or maybe we should have just ordered burgers, but our meal did not merit anywhere near the 4.2 stars that google rates this place.
Good food even better prices
This is a great place for a date, family or friends to get together for great food and service. Its long time operation serving has been three generations and counting for my family so far. A must visit anytime!
Love the Goof! A Beach staple. Been going here for years. Great Canadian Chinese food and breakfast. The Clubhouse sandwich also a great choice. :)
Always reliable. Generally good service. It s my go to joint since the Tulip closed. Food
Been going here for years. Great little place. Great to get a seat by the window to watch Queen St.
The Goof should be declared a historical site! In the heart of The Beach, and better known as The Goof, this restaurant has been around since 1952. Situated on the south side of Queen St east right across from the equally historic and vintage Fox Theatre, this dynamic duo is a guaranteed evening of nostalgia and comfort. I have been going for over 40 years and my family has since the 50s. The staff is part of what makes this place. The recently retired Hall of Famer Hazel os a legend. Hazel worked there for several decades working into her 90s! A past Hall of Famer Kenny, would yell (in his own endearing way) at you if you didnt eat your vegetables or if you took too long to eat (which all added to the experience) but Stephanie and Lucy will take good care of you. Enjoy. Kid-friendliness: Always have remembered my family and made us feel welcome for over 40 years.
The goof is so goofy
Friendly staff and both great Chinese food and North American favs like burgers and shakes.
A classic! No frills, affordable, massive menu and perfect for the kids.
We went for the first time yesterday. The food was terrible, the food came out one person at a time so one person was eating while the rest waited, the bathrooms smelled awful and the after we paid the bill, the waitress came back and insisted that we had made a mistake on our credit card as there was no tip and then went on to demanded a tip. First of all, as a former waitress, this is appalling. Secondly, we ALWAYS leave cash as a tip, always. Is leaving cash no longer acceptable? Im still stunned. First and last time for us! The GOOF can stick it!
Sunday, April 16, 2023 Combo for 1 (sweet and sour chicken balls with fried rice and an egg roll) was most delicious and of good value. Lots of chicken in the chicken balls! Wednesday, April 12, 2023 Imagine - back in the early 70s, I was a student at Malvern Collegiate Institute and going to this restaurant (lovingly known as The Goof) to indulge in fries with gravy and a Coke, served by the best waiter in town, Kenny, world renowned for his Argyle socks!!! Today Im ordering Pad Thai!! And good Pad Thai at that!!!
Beef ho fun was okay. Schezuan chicken was not at all what I expected compared to other places. Chicken quality was also really questionable. And 1.50 for fried chow mein ... came out to two tiny packs of what looks like pretzel sticks. Tried this place based on reviews but wont be ordering from here again.
The Goof has gone down. The owners need to hire a cook that knows how to properly prepare broccoli so that its not semi-raw, and how to cook rice without making it extremely greasy. The Shanghai noodles were also overcooked and bland.
Ive been going there for over 40 years I always enjoy going there the service is great and the staff is friendly and personable practically a historical landmark whatever you order here is delicious I highly recommend it
I, personally, have been coming here since the mid-70 .. it predates me buy a couple decades. The food is, as it always has been, good. Amazing place for Chinese /Canadian meal. Good Food, done right, and you really cant beat prices. If youre taking a swing through the Beach, stop for lunch or dinner.
Large portions and great food.
This place has a long tradition of just a wonderful place to eat and socialize, indoors and outdoors. 60+ years. Kid-friendliness: Welcome!
Simple food for cheap. Service is mediocre and food took forever to arrive. But the patio is pleasant to sit in and we had a good time.
Rude and offensive stuff. Worst experience ever.
My fav dish is the orange chicken
Very dissatisfied with the food. Ordered for delivery and the egg roll that came with the combo for one was filled with sprouts that have clearly not been cleaned. Tasted of nothing but dirt, completely brown inside in a way where you can tell its not from seasonings or sauces used while cooking. Gritty, grainy, disgusting. The fried rice and chop suey are alright, but not great. I would skip the chicken balls unless you like corn syrup covered dough. I could forgive all the things listed above, but that dirt filled egg roll is going to haunt me.
Legendary Beaches restaurant. Ive been eating at The Goof for the past 40 years.
The Goof! What can I say...a local stalwart in the diner biz. Quickest service ever...#8! Regular now for 25 years and counting, but sure do miss the original decor....update: first time back in a couple of years and hands down the WORST Chinese food I have ever had. Egg rolls were so bad and dehydrated...tasted literally like dirt had to throw them all out. Now I know why this resto that was once so busy is almost always dead. Do not go.
Great Chinese/Canadian Food at reasonable prices, fast service, small outdoor patio, bank seating inside. Has been in the beach east for decades. Food
Food was overcooked, not quite burned, still eatable, but would have been better if not deep fried slightly less. Restaurant is reminiscent of an old time diner without the atmosphere. Clean location and attentive staff. Food : 3/5
Mix of American-Asian, breakfast and diner food. Took away a dinner special and some baos, which were pretty good. Low price point as well. Overall, pretty satisfied.
We ordered based on a 4.2 star review. Ordered cashew chicken, chow mein, egg rolls. Spent 65$ on 2 Mains and 3 appetizers. Cashew chicken was 90% uncooked white onion and celery (photo below). Everything else was about the same. Called to mention that we weren t the happiest with our order. They just set the phone down and walked away. I honestly wasn t going to leave a review, but then I called, and now here I am.
When downcast the Beaches we always have a visit to the Good Food (GOOF) great food and large portions. Chinese abd Canadian dishes. Outdoor patio and nice wait staff.
We moved into the neighborhood not too long ago and weve been going to garden gate very often. Its clear why its a Beaches staple and theyve been around since the 50s! Staff are super friendly, atmosphere is nice and the food - a mix of Asian cuisine and American diner fare- is tasty and probably the most reasonably priced in toronto! 2 can dine for a very nice price.
First of all, let me say that the servers here are truly excellent. During the pandemic they really stepped up and exceeded my expectations. I think it is time for Garden Gate (The Goof) to update or revise their menu. I know this would disappoint some customers, however, the specific cuisine called Canadian-Chinese food is on its way out. China of course has an immense wealth of cuisine, and I would like to see more of that on the menu. This is the kind of restaurant where if you come in around 2:30 pm, the staff will be eating their lunch and you can look over and say to yourself, I want that. Where is that on the menu? There are some dim sum items but the issue is the deep fried, salty nature of so much of the menu. May I suggest white rice, greens, and freshly bbqd char siu ( )? If that was on offer, I would be at Garden Gate once a week.
They offer free delivery within the beaches if you dont mind waiting 3-4 hours. I stopped in while running some errands in the neighborhood and they told me the wait would be 30min, I asked if they could just deliver it if its free and they said sure. I expected the food would have been delivered by the time I got to my friends place a block away from the restaurant (spent about an hour on errands). Unfortunately it ended up taking just under 4hrs for the delivery to be made, we had to call a few times wondering what had happened and never got a straight answer. When the food finally arrived it was all stone cold and even heating it up really didnt make it taste any better. On top of that the quality of food is really questionable, the chicken balls were massive but only had a marble sized piece of chicken on the inside of all that breading. Its an unfortunate shame, the goof used to be an amazing staple of the beaches neighborhood, just wish their standards were upheld over the years.
For anyone looking for a good restaurant in the Beach with good service, prices and food thid is a good place to gom
It wouldn t be the Beach without The Goof
Very disappointing
Weve been going to the Goof for years and always enjoy the experience. The food is good and the service is friendly and very welcoming.
I m not sure how anyone can give this place a bad review, we have been customers of theirs for at least 15 years. We order Chinese food for special occasions. We have never been disappointed once. The food is always delicious, it s always hot, always fresh and delivery is always quick. We particularly love the lemon chicken. The lady who delivers the food is my favourite, she s always so friendly and nice!!! If you want good old fashioned Chinese this is the place for you.
Sad to report a negative experience but also businesses who dont look after their customers dont deserve to stick around. We placed an order for delivery which arrived pretty quickly but turned out to be missing a dish (one which we really wanted and which had definitely been ordered as the lady on the phone checked if we knew it contained peanuts). Called to get it sent out and they asked if we were sure we wanted it as we hadnt been charged for it. We said yes and delayed eating, thinking it would turn up within about 30 minutes. Got a call back 20 minutes later to say it would be another 40 minutes, at which point we reluctantly turned it down so that we could eat the rest of our meal. The food was okay, nothing special. The bottom line is that they made a mistake and they did whatever they could to avoid fixing it, leaving us regretting giving them our business. Not a place I will ever go back to.
Love this place, my childhood and now as an adult still loving the place and owners Keith and Wendy always willing to please
Toronto staple. Long live The Goof
We ordered with UberEats and several dishes were super stale and old. The orange chicken was rubbery and the chow mein was not edible as the noodles were either fully dried out and hard or not cooked properly. The fried rice was also stale and old. For a place that charges a premium in the beaches, you expect more, especially when the order isn t small. Their spring rolls were great but I guess you can t mess that up when deep frying something. Not impressed. Spring rolls is only reason they got 2 stars and not 1.
Value for your money
We ve ordered from here before so we knew something was wrong. The food was ridiculously greasy, and at times pieces of chicken and beef seemed close to raw. Vegetables looked like they were roughly chopped and thrown in, the only things looking done were the spring rolls and chicken balls. We didn t have much of a choice so we ate, a day and a half later I was racing to the toilet. I don t know if cooking staff were rushed but I m definitely not ordering from the goof for along time.
Was told by staff to order at 4pm for a 6pm delivery this evening. It s almost 7pm and nothing. Can t even get through on the phone to cancel. I understand that it s NYE but this is a bit much.
Nostalgic trip back...got take out. Its decor has changed. Allowed us to wait inside at booth while we waited for order. On the coldest day of the year!
It s coming on 2.5 hours since I placed my order. I can t even get through to them as there phones go to busy. Even though it was late it came hot and was good. I ve been a loyal customer for 24 years. They were very apologetic, this was the first time this has happened.
First time here. Came for Valentines and really enjoyed the food. It was also a charming place. Got busy around 6:30 between take out and sit ins so choose your time accordingly
Pretty good. Ordered a takeout, food was ready very quickly, tasty and not too oily.
This was my first time ordering here. Amazing Chinese food. It was very delicious. Thanks for a great meal
Excellent all around
We ordered mango chicken & beef asparagus, and not only they didnt come with rice, but the meat had no flavour at all :(
Had roast pork dinner. Mashed tasted like instant. Frozen mixed veggies, not very hot. Small portion of pork, sliced so thin I can see through it
Great food, reasonablely price, great and fast service, I would highly recommend them to order from
I am a big fan of dives. This is because you get a great portion of food at proper price. This dive Chinese food was incredible. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable.
I made an online order at 8:41 PM on April 30 I then called the restaurant to specify to not ring the doorbell because I am a tenant in a duplex. The woman I spoke to assured me that that would be fine. delivery is approximately 30 minutes according to the website my order never arrived not only that I telephone the restaurant only to find out that it closes at 9 PM I received an order confirmation by email this is disgusting absolutely disgusting I will never order from them again.
Met with a group of friends in a place that s been around for years. Ordered spring rolls & egg rolls to start. Spring rolls were basically just cabbage, & extremely greasy, egg rolls tasted like greasy straw. My Pad Thai was absolutely the worst I have ever eaten, it tasted like the noodles were tossed in ketchup. There were no bean sprouts, peanuts or lime, just noodles & a few strips of green pepper. I know this is a favourite in the Beach, but I m at a loss why. Maybe it s the prices because it sure isn t the food.
Meat is amazing!
Great Chinese and American fish and chips. Great value too.
Excellent Chinese food, service with a smile. Very reasonable prices, big portions.
Amazing choice of food selection, affordable price with cold beers!
I grew up in the Beaches before it became singular. Could not afford to eat at the Goof then but now that I am nearly 60 and better off, I had to visit this legendary resto. Service was friendly but I found the food wanting (even by NA Chinese standards). Sorry, I wish it wasnt so.
Worst sweet and sour chicken balls all batter barely ant chicken.i heard this place was good . I will never go back.
Good food. The dim sum, chinese food and the Eggs Benedict were all excellent.
Nice place. Patio is a nice spot for people watching
I love this place. My dad used to come here in the 70s after nights out and since moving to Toronto it s one of my fav diner spots! Both the Chinese and diner style food are great and the prices are super fair! perfect for hangovers or just for some comfort food! So happy it s still around and I get to experience the goof from my dads stories!
I love my tastey turkey dinner , just needed a bit of salt. Very reasonable prices.
Absolutely adore The Goof! Great diverse menu, affordable prices, and wonderful kind staff And in a great location near the beach and along the shops on Queen E. Highly recommend!!
What a great place with a fantastic menu! One of our regular spots in The Beaches. The pork chops, liver and onions with onions, and the sweet and sour fish were really satisfying tonight...
Has been in the neighbourhood since 1952. Good hot chinese food.generous portions. Lovely service
If you are craving some Chinese in the Beach area . A decent food joint with a patio, quick service but not so chilled Corona. The Schezwan noodles with Chicken was nothing to write about. I liked the Thai Basil Chicken though.Ok if you are tired and hungry. Period.
Had not been there in many, many years.Good food at the GOOF.Almost historic.A must if you are visiting the beach.
What once was our favorite spot has now become unrecognizable. The food has dramatically decreased in quality. General Tso was practically beef jerky, nothing has sauce. Sad to hear our beloved Goof changed chefs... Time to look for a new spot.
Love the staff and food at this local Chinese-Canadian diner. The patio is a gorgeous for breakfast. Cannot say enough good things about this historic restaurant. Some people get angry that they renovated and miss the table jukeboxes... theyve been open for about 65 year, so the renovations are already 30 years old. I miss those juke boxes too, but stuff wears out, and they increased the dining area by moving the Open Kitchen out back. I hope theyre open long enough to renovate again and again!
First time ordering from here and Ive received texts that its been delayed twice. Not a good impression. Food was okay but as good as I hoped . Oh well...search is still on for good afordable chinese food.
Delicious, good service
Great value for very LOW prices!
Good food friendly staff, and probably the best deal youll find on all of queen street
Best Chinese food
Its The Goof, a Toronto landmark. Family owned and run with a delightful old-school feel. Love it!
Really great chines Canadian! Best place around for this! Arrived fast and fresh!
Wasn t the greatest food I ever had. Although, sweet n sour ribs were good and the fried rice. Never again. Water was amazing.
Great Food and good service
Very disappointing. Hot and Sour Soup was cold and sent back to kitchen. Pad Thai was bland flavored and not at all hot. Was offered to have hot sauce added! Not really the hot tasty food experience. Waiter explained that kitchen forgot to add the sauce, meaning it was not prepared as a hot dish. Should have read the reviews here first.
I will be back for sure the waitress was very nice and friendly the food was delicious and inexpensive.
The fried rice has tasted burnt the last few times Ive ordered it. Im not sure how you mess up fried rice but please change your oil or the pan so the rice isnt bad or has that bad taste.
Best general tso in the city.
Great
Its cheap chinese food. Dont complain if its kinda bad sometimes. Its exactly what you need at the time.
Best casual Chinese-Canadian restaurant in the beaches area. Miss the old vibes from before the renovations years ago, the definitely made the milkshake portions smaller but the place is still great.
Cantonese chicken chow mein & beef hor fun - delicious and generous portions. The chicken chow mein had an assortment of fresh veggies and the beef hor fun had tender pieces of meat.
I recently bought shrimp fried rice. It was rice.....and shrimp. Thats it. No peas, no carrots, no onions, no egg. Truly a joke. Save your money, dont bother.
Nice patio, good selection and cross section big food, meal was very good.
Just moved from Niagara the food is amazing just had the best hamburger ever
Advised by the server that a scallop dish returned to the kitchen for tasting off would have to be paid for by her if she removed it from my tab. As a repeat customer, I will not go back to a restaurant with this policy.
Always fast, always good, always well priced. Also had the best Hot & Sour soup in the city.
The orange chicken is the best thing ever 10/10 every time
A great little spot down in the beaches! Been going there for years.
One of my favourite takeout places. Highly recommend for their quality and friendly service.
Great food and great service
this is my favorite restaurant me and my dad have been coming here for years and the food has always been excellent and the staff beyond friendly i really recommend coming here (get the chicken soo guy and garden gate fried rice you cant go wrong with that)
Perhaps I ordered on an off night. I saw this local restaurant recommended on Facebook but my own experience was something that will not have me returning for another order. My order was made on their website; order took about 45 minutes not bad. I noted and specifically asked to be called upon delivery, instead I had someone bagging and yelling at my window. I was not really happy about that, after even seeing on the recipe that my phone number was listed. Food review: we really enjoyed the chicken balls, well cooked and a good amount of chicken. You can never go wrong with sweet and sour sauce either! We also ordered Cantonese chow main but the noodles were hard, some burnt, crunch and not enjoyable; only the middle was soft. The shrimp dumplings were soggy, so we were disappointed there. We ordered sesame chicken, but the taste was more bitter to this version we got; also a lot darker. While the chicken balls were really good, the noodles really missed the mark and were so disappointing. The other dishes also fell short of our expectations, and the delivery issues was less than professional. (Personally never had anyone NOT call the number listed vs banging on random windows)
Its about time I reviewed The Goof. Initially, back when the Jar Do wings were free if your order was over $X, the food was just meh. Now you have to pay for the wings and the food is stellar. Maybe it is under new management (dont know) but something has changed for the better. Weve been getting delivery quite frequently and the quality is always there. Also the delivery girl is a pleasant individual (great ambassador). Definitely recommended this establishment and will continue to patronize.
The Great Goof!
One of the oldest AND best restaurants in the Beach! Family run since opening and they have everything you could want on their menu, from Chinese to American, and their prices are incredibly reasonable for the quality and size of the servings. You cant go wrong by choosing the Goof - its a classic in the area. We like their Jardo wings and classic black bean calamari and chicken chow mein. Well be back again soon!
Good food at good value.
Good food for picky Canadian palates. Excellent service.
My favorite place for Chinese.
Tasty comfort food excellent price and good service. Thanks
Good price, good service and amazing food
Food?
Gotta love the goof, friendly staff good eats good vibes all around. Order the lime drink
Nice spot for a quick lunch. Well priced, good eats, very helpful and friendly staff.
The Garden Gate can never be appreciated enough. It is a Beach anchor, with a shockingly wide variety of choices on the menu. Going there with a friend who doesnt like Chinese food? No problem, their diner selections are classic and excellent. Going with someone who only likes Canadian Chinese with bright red sauce on chicken balls? Theirs are wonderful. Going with someone who only likes actual Chinese food? Theyve got it, and their service is remarkably fast.
This is a great place! The breakfast menu is delicious and for a great price too.
Good food and fast service
Been going here since I was a kid still.go food is great
Unfortunately it is currently take away only right now. We have ordered from here before and they once again came through today as I celebrated another birthday. The food is tasty and the cost is more than reasonable. The Shanghai vermicelli curry was done perfectly.
We love the Goof!!
Was easy to find and order was ready upon arrival.
Pretty good Chinese food. The gen tso should be a little bit spicier
Always delicious and always great service. Try the green beans with pork! Amazing.
It s the goof !!!!!
A classic in the beaches! Everything is pretty good. Generous portions.
Cantonese lo mein - plain noodles with big pieces of vegetables, not appetizing. Vegetarian Cantonese chow mein - plain and wrong noodles, with large pieces of vegetables. Egg rolls are doughy. Sweet n sour spareribs - breaded for some reason... Beef and broccoli - both under cooked with no seasoning. Do not order food from this restaurant unless you enjoy eating bad food.
Good food, friendly staff. Reasonable prices too.
I like how that they have something for everyone.....but also means that none of the menu will be exceptionally good. Ordered four Chinese food and they were all really salty and not true to the taste (when compared to other Chinese restaurants) but its also pretty cheap so cant really complain when you cant find alternatives in the area.
Totally disappointed that they renovated and removed the diner look. The food changed as well, I do not believe it taste as good as before unfortunately. The seat where I was sitting was very dirty and the waiter did not clean it. Too hungry to mind. Overall the food was not what it use to be anymore. It was too salty. I wish I saw the reviews before coming here again.
This menu had something for everyone whether you want comfort food, breakfast, burgers, sweet and sour, crispy chicken, club sandwiches, eggs benedict, its a very comprehensive menu - and last time I checked the most expensive thing was $14. The folks who work there are quick and courteous, youll get your food quickly and not pay a lot. Is it 3-star Michelin dining? No, its a nice, low key restaurant for a quick cheap bite to eat with friends and/or the kids. I hope it never closes.
Love the food. Awesome prices. Clean restaurant. Friendly staff. Always have a great meal here.
Good Chinese food at fair price, and the old school diner type atmosphere are appealing for repeat lunches when working in the area!
We ended up here because of the Jazz Festival, we wanted to try some local cuisine instead of a food truck. However the food was quite a disappointment: they have a huge menu but many options were not available, poutine had cheddar cheese on it and very salty, the Chinese dishes were salty and over cooked.
Nice price and nice food
Ordered this for my moms birthday... Terrible experience. The pineapple fried rice had seafood and meat in it, even though their website didnt say that. Whatever we got when we ordered sweet and sour chicken balls definitely wasnt that. The spring rolls were burnt. Everything was overcook and over salted. It was just a terrible experience. Would recommend never eating here.
Still the same. Still amazing!
Lots of options! Food okay. Good prices and food portions. Not waiting lines. Fast service. Traditional landmark of the east end. Breakfast all day long!! Chinese and American food
This diner was use in the movie Frequency (2000). Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel. Rocks! Yet to try the food though..
We had a Sunday brunch with a crowd of our extended family. It was a wonderful affordable and casual experience. The staff knew we were coming and stood ready to welcome us. The food was great and the coffee was surprisingly flavorful. I gave it 5 stars based on the excellent table service and fresh food. However, the physical state of this 1952 restaurant is declining. The washrooms are awful and the furniture legs etc are corroded. Lots of old restaurants are also a bit grungy but this is unnecessary.
Very hit or miss. Half the time it s 4/5 the other half it s 1/5. So it averages about 2.
Typical Chinese Canadian food place. Dont expect any authentic Chinese food. Good prices!
The food was quick and delicious
Loved the Mapo Tofu, Eggplants and fried rice. Sweet servers too.
The Goof has been a staple in the beach forever. I am glad it is.
The value earns this place four stars for Sunday brunch. A reasonable Benedict at nine dollars is the priciest thing on the brunch menu. Standard egg and meat specials are delightfully well priced. Pancakes are not too heavy, french toast is yummy, and theres even a small offering of home made dim sum. Its clean and friendly, the owner is attentive and kind, and coffee is refilled frequently even when the place is slammed (which it typically is by 10am on Sundays). I intend to come for dinner to try either some Canadian Chinese dishes, a burger. or something else from the expansive menu. What a great find this place is. Unpretentious and great value.
Great go to in the Beach. Consistency and good service. Never had a problem with anything here.
