General Public is inspired by trying to imagine what an upscale English pub would be if it had the heart of an American brasserie (and was open 11 to 11). It’s also going to signal a little bit of steakhouse, but not too much. And finally, it will look behind itself at The Black Hoof, because too often we forget all the paths we took to get where we are — a small chop of nostalgia is always welcome. The main floor is ‘everything’s gone green’, with lush banquette seating, warm wood, and barstools designed for long conversations over many cocktails. Upstairs you’ll find a a completely different space that transports you to a peachy 80s dream. Somehow these two halves make perfect sense, and complement each other in a seamless conversation.
Service was fantastic, the ambiance was impeccable and the food was to die for. Though it was somewhat pricey, it was worth every penny. I really enjoyed the curried lamb tartare, the lemon tart dessert and the passion fruit cocktail. Highly recommend!
Fantastic food, beautiful ambience, friendly attentive service. Can’t wait to be back. Started with the shrimp cocktail, wedge salad (recommended by Phil Dunphy), curry lamb tartar, tuna carpaccio , tongue and tail pie, skate wing, and the crème caramel and butterscotch pudding - which they make and can in the restaurant) Cocktails and wine were also fantastic. Overall a cozy, fun, and gourmet and delicious experience.
From the decor, to the lighting, to the service, to the food, and even to the bathroom soap dispensers, everything about General Public is executed impeccably. If I had to pick one word to describe this restaurant it would be ‘thoughtful.’ That might not seem exciting but when you have the pleasure of dining somewhere where no detail is unintentional you realize just how important that thoughtfulness is. Our service was excellent - attentive, unfussy, consistent. The overall vibe of the room is as spectacular as I had hoped and a really perfectly unique escape on Geary. All of that is truly secondary, but complementary, to the food. It doesn’t hit you over the head Immediately, but after a discussion around the table we were able to easily and remarkably identify a subtlety in each dish that was thematic and cohesive. It felt a little akin to someone interpreting the Met Gala theme with panache: not obvious but perfectly right. Every dish was impeccable but what really stood out were the sides. The bread basket full of variety, warm and exciting, served with a marmite honey butter that I want to buy by the tub. Creamed leeks that I only wish I could replicate in my own kitchen with a beautiful hit of sweetness. The perfect french fry with a dusting of malt. The level of intention and preparation that went into those sides tells you all you need to know about a General Public experience. Our cocktails were also a smash hit. In any other restaurant they’d probably be the standout of what we spoke about but General Public suffers from so much excellence across the board that they almost feel like an afterthought when reminiscing on the meal. The wine list has something for everyone and excitingly has some eclectic finds that make it feel uniquely Torontonian and also distinctly its own vibe. Kind of sums up General Public, honestly.
Went for a birthday dinner with my friend. The place is stunning! Vibes are high. We had the Ham plate as well (not pictured) this was one of my most favourite bites of the evening. Any hiccups were quickly resolved and it was so great to be able to meet Jen in person. She is warm and lovely. Can’t wait to go back for lunch and to try more dishes.
Amazing experience! Came here for some appetizers and drinks, and everything was incredible. The service was consistently top-notch from the time we walked in the door - everyone was so kind and attentive. The space is unlike anything I’ve seen before - we sat upstairs in a fun, curved corner booth, and the whole room had an incredible 80s vibe. Glass bricks, pastel colours, 80s art details, mirrored furniture. The music was awesome and suited the space. The energy was so lively and fun - everyone was having a great time, and you could feel it. My partner and I shared the endive salad, chicken wings, and baked oyster rarebit. Everything was unique and tasty to the friggin’ max. The chicken wings were unreal. We also enjoyed their beer offerings - really awesome choices! They had a really excellent non-alcoholic beer option from Burdock as well, which is always appreciated. We had a cake for dessert, and although I can’t remember the name, it doesn’t really matter because it was delicious and was a perfect way to end the meal. The whole experience felt so thoughtful from begin to finish. Highly recommend! Also, the guinea pig branding is an out-of-this-world level of cuteness that I wholeheartedly appreciated. Basically, just check it out already, okay?
The lamb tartare, steak with salsa verde, butterscotch pudding and the pigs head terrine were stand-outs. Even the fries that we ordered with the steak were 10/10, and had some malt vinegar salt which is a great touch. The cocktails were amazing, and as always service impeccable. The little details take it the extra mile for me though. The forest green and pink colour scheme, down to the tin that the pudding is in. The lighting! The bathrooms!!! Will be back many, many times
I would definitely recommend coming here for a cozy and intimate dinner with few friends. The space is definitely small but it has nice decor and ambiance to it. There’s not too much on the menu but everything tasted great. I’d definitely recommend the lamb tartar which was very unique along with the tail and tongue pie.
Beautiful restaurant and atmosphere. Service was great besides the fact our reservation was at 9:15 and we didn’t get seated until closer to 9:50. Food was fine. Portions were small, but flavours were underwhelming for the price. Halibut was probably my least favourite. Cocktail was great though!
Exceeded my expectations! Every single detail was thought of in this place. Vibes, service and food were immaculate. I dreamt about the chicken wings the same night.
Sophisticated and delicious drinks and food. Exceptional service and atmosphere as well.
flawless lunch with a platonic ideal bloody mary. perfect service - chill vibes but always attentive. the room is stunning. plus my dining mate said she d like to live inside the bathroom bc it was so beautiful.
The place is not bad for an upscale joint. But the surf n turf is without a doubt, the worst surf n turf I ve consumed in my food tasting career.
Wow, just wow. Amazing, delicious, service was impeccable. Do yourself the favor and experience this place!
Visited General Public for lunch and was pretty disappointed by the entire experience. We love Jen Agg s other restaurants so came here with high expectations. Food - ordered the steak and egg and chicken tartine. When I saw the steak and egg I thought it was a joke. Steak was bleeding everywhere, and the egg was unseasoned. For 47$ it didn t come with anything else, not even some salad. Also the presentation of it was pretty off putting. The chicken tartine was flavourful and plated a lot better. Service - was ok, the food was served while one of us was in the washroom, which I normally don t care about but at this price point it s a no. No compensation was offered when we gave the feedback regarding how disappointed we were with the steak and egg. Atmosphere - it s cute but I don t think Jen Agg s usual aesthetic and decor works at a larger scale. My favourite thing about her other restaurants is that they are cozy and intimate, General Public doesn t inspire that same feeling. I would like to visit for dinner as the reviews and menu look so much better.
This restaurant is miles away from the Toronto standard. Yes it s vibe-y and insta-friendly but the food is missing a special touch. The cocktails are delicious. I had the Italian and its a refreshing take on a Negroni. The Lamb Tartare is definitely a standout, however me, my husband and a friend ordered the pork chop and halibut respectively and said there s definitely better out there. I ordered the roasted chicken and I wish I hadn t- it comes in a full bowl of oil and it s poorly accompanied. Save your cash and dont be fooled by the influencers
Beautiful restaurant and very well thought out. Amazing service. The menu offers a good variety and everything we had was tasty. Nothing mindblowimg but all very good. Would recommend avoiding the 2 seater booths on ground level, or if you sit there be careful as the light bulbs at each table are uncovered and close to you (the booths are a bit small) so its easy to get burned by the bulb if you brush against it.
Great experience. Everything is lovely. Beautiful spot with great food.
Incredible experience and what a unique atmosphere! We will definitely return
I went to GP 3 times over a period of 1.5 weeks in September. Lunch, dinner, happy hour. Mainly because I enjoyed it so much each time, I just wanted to bring other people back. Lunch - a great spot for a nicer lunch. With a friend, for work, and especially if you re a tourist and looking for a great lunch dining experiences. Food was perfect, we had fish and chips and a harvest salad. Dinner - perfection. The shrimp parfait is my dream come true. Cocktails were fun. Huge wine list. Everything was just right. Chefs kiss. Happy hour - brought my dad and my baby. Oysters were amazing and the burger was exactly what I hoped it would be. Thank you for this! Also thank you for not making me feel bad about brining a toddler to a nice restaurant lol. She loved the fries. Ps - decor and staff, 10/10
Ive been looking forward to this spot opening in our neighbourhood and it did not disappoint! Every dish was presented uniquely (i.e. a wedge salad we were told you can eat with your hands?!) The flavours were simultaneously inventive and nostalgic. Highly recommend the crudo, wedge salad and the butterscotch pudding. We will be back!
We had a fabulous evening at General Public! The food and service were spectacular, and the space is so pretty. As a guest with a gluten allergy, our server Alex was attentive, kind, and knew exactly what was in all of the food. I really appreciate a server who is confident in the menu, and assures me that my meal will be excellent even considering my allergy. We love you Alex! We also were referred to the sommelier for a wine choice, and she was fantastic! She knew everything about wine, spoke to us about it in normal English, and she even made me want to learn more about wine! In terms of food, everything was delicious, and the food was fun! We were really impressed by the shrimp trifle, and rainbow trout tartare; really everything from the raw bar was amazing. We will be coming back, hopefully soon!
An absolute gem! The atmosphere and intentional design create a vibe that feels both elevated and welcoming. Cocktails are meticulously crafted, bursting with unique and thoughtful combinations that make each sip exciting. And the food? As always, delivers. This steakhouse-inspired menu is nothing short of exceptional a must-try for any food lover. I d encourage you to over-order and share with friends or family; the menu s variety appeals to every taste, making it the perfect spot to celebrate a birthday or special occasion with a larger group. Truly, an experience for the books! Oh and they are open for lunch as well. Cant wait to come back!
No bad seats. Love the swivel chairs at the bar. The interior design is immaculate. Food is creative, drinks are well balanced. Both times Ive been, service feels a bit off. A little bit missing, nothing offensive, but not the high end service youd expect for the price point. All that being said, will be back as its great date night spot.
Jen Agg s relatively new spot on Geary is a sleek and stylish restaurant, although when I went, it felt a little like they were still ironing out the kinks at the beginning of October. Meeting a business contact for some cocktails at the tail end of Happy Hour led to a degree of confusion and unnecessary restrictions to what could be ordered from the menu and at what specific time. That dish? Oh no, you have to wait 21 minutes before you can order that. Ok, can we order it to come shortly after 21 minutes? No you have to order it in 21 minutes. Service is everything at fine establishments, no? Making guests negotiate seems an odd approach. Anyway, let s just put it down to fine-tuning the timing of things. As mentioned, I quite liked the interior, the modern touches, piled in with a calming palette, throwback vibes and a lot of wood. Given that industrial and urban Geary is steps outside the front door, you wouldn t know it from the cozy and inviting interior. Ostensibly there for cocktails, they were served up fairly well. Nice presentations and pretty looking little things. We had the Call The Whole Thing Off, the Werewolf, the Eton Mess and the Helter Skelter. While I didn t quite get the underlying British theme coming through in the cocktails or tying into the cocktail scene in London, the drinks were, as mentioned, well-presented and certainly not disappointing (well, perhaps the Eton Mess was the least satisfactory). Overall, a good job. Best in the City? That s a tough level of competition. We also ordered some snacks, the chips and the creamed leeks. Both were fantastic and the chips fried to perfection, although for the portion sizes, the prices seemed a tad steep. Especially as we had to order two of the chips to feel that there was enough for two. There are vegetarian options, and this is a Jen Agg restaurant with nods to Black Hoof, so perhaps one shouldn t expect too much. I wouldn t describe, fundamentally, side dishes and a couple of salads as catering to vegetarians. Again, however, we were primarily there to catch up and have a few cocktails, so it s maybe a little disingenuous to comment too much on the food. I can imagine to the meat and fish eaters out there, that the food is going to be well-received. Will visit again to see how it s settling in.
What a vibe! Super cool space while being very comfortable and not pretentious. GET THE BURGER. And the seafood tower. But the burger. Can t wait to go back!
Came to the restaurant as a walk-in on a week night, was pleasantly surprised that a table could be available and was seated immediately at a very small cute table in the back, Jenn Aggs table near Harry Potters room under the stairs. Enjoyed the ambiance, good buzz and lots of good looking people having fun dinners. The staff service was outstanding, from the door person, manager, wait staff, all super exceptional and friendly. I had an aperol spritz, which I must admit was terrible, Ive had way better (re: Dannys Pizzeria). The food was top notch, I had the fish, and it was out of this world. It was like a flavour explosion in my mouth, I could have eaten another portion. Fries were great, having just been to Greece where the fries are incredible, these GPR fries were nice to come home to. I would definitely come here again, would definitely like to try the happy hour Burger that the staff was raving about. See you soon GPR!
Going to a restaurant on a weekend in Toronto is an actual nightmare. Best to go on a random Wednesday evening or something. There was absolutely nowhere to park, construction everywhere and the restaurant was absolutely so busy that it took us a good hour to get our main dishes. We only had cocktails and oysters to start which came out in decent timing but the main dishes just took way too long. It s like I get it that it s busy, but like, an hour is just unacceptable. We got a few half assed apologies but that s about it. The food was not stand out at all. Chicken was fine, skate wing was fine but very salty , cocktails were fine, the only thing that was exceptional was the banoffee pie. Wouldn t come back here. I do love Bar Vendetta though, so will stick to going there.
Detailed service, exquisite food in an outstanding environment.
Got to check out our neighbour GP at last and I must say that it surpassed my expectations. The first thing that we encountered is the warm and bustling vibe. We were greeted and seated fast. Service was excellent ( sorry, I forgot our servers name, maybe Toby?). I wasn t expecting the food to be as good as it was. The lamb tartar, endive salad and steak were all perfectly executed With sharp and perfectly balanced flavours. . What a great addition to Geary Av. Good job Jen Agg!
5/5 service, food, and ambience. A real treat.
Fantastic service. Loved the tongue and tail pie. Nice peas too.
General Public has such an excellent vibe the minute you walk in with friendly faces greeting you, the place buzzes with energy. The 90s playlist was perfect for the night. Even if it wasn t a jammed Saturday night I imagine the interior on quiet afternoon would be cozy and comfortable. Service was top-notch friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The menu had plenty of sharable options. Seafood choices are really impressive, loved the nods to Hoof too. This place truly feels like a restaurant for everyone great food, great vibe, and fantastic service!
A truly stunning restaurant that feels unique and grand. Great music, drinks and *ambiance*. I got a walk-in spot at the mezzanine bar on Friday night with a friend. I was a bit worried about sitting at a bar, but being up top was quiet enough for a conversation and we also got to people watch below. The space is incredible - I felt like I was out for dinner with my glamorous aunt in 1988. We ordered a couple plates to share and tried a bunch of drinks. Food was solid, drinks were amazing and the whole vibe was great. Jen Aggs restaurants always feel special and like a unique offering to the Toronto restaurant scene with every detail thought out. It feels like an experience eating at General Public. Will 100% be back.
Service was excellent. Food incredible. Everything inside from the music to the flowers in the bathroom vase was considered carefully and chosen with exceptional taste. Jen Agg must be the coolest person her friends know.
the food was absolutely delicious - from the lion s mane schnitzel to the banoffie pie - delectable! the atmosphere is cozy yet chic, and the staff is incredibly kind. we had a wonderful experience at GP! <3
Had Brunch at General Public and it surpassed expectations across the board. The atmosphere was beautiful and classy, the food was executed perfectly (especially the omelette) and the staff was very attentive and friendly. Cant wait to try their dinner menu! -Edison Jang
Excellent burger. Loved the raw bar items and service was fantastic!
I ve been twice and had vastly different experiences. Each time we sat at the bar. My first visit was for brunch and I loved the food, drinks, and service. We had oysters, the ham, endive salad, and fried clams and mussels, as well as sharing four house cocktails. It was a blast. Everything was perfect and we both agreed that Let s Call the Whole Thing Off was the best cocktail we d had in ages. The next visit was for dinner. I wanted to try the other menu. I found this experience far less welcoming, aside from the bartender who took care of us and was delightful. Unfortunately, the drinks were inconsistent. Our Let s Call the Whole Thing Off had a completely different profile. The food was okay. Nothing stood out aside from the butter sauces. The halibut was overcooked, and over seasoned. The texture was rubbery. The restaurant was slightly busier this time, but not enough to justify the difference. This restaurant is gorgeous and some of the staff that I ve met are lovely, but inconsistency in food and drinks, coupled with a feeling of discomfort through the meal, ruined the experience.
7.8/ 10 Theme: really amazing food, but overly expensive for what it is. Warm atmosphere and nice people serving. Sat at the bar with a friend and had a great night, every single dish was super delicious. The sausage, the lamb, the potatoes and leeks were especially good. The sauce on the lamb. The sausage was incredible too. But left surprised as a dinner for 2 with no alcohol was $240 + tax and tip. Insanely expensive considering. $23 for one sausage. $18 for potatoes But excellent food just know what you re going for as far as pricing. Inflation I guess, who knows.
Magical spot. Ive been here several times for lunch and dinner and everything is always perfect. Grateful to have such a beautiful spot for lunch in the city. The brûléed porridge and masala eggs are particularly wonderful. Oh, and the bread is incredible, and all of the desserts are to die for.
We had a blast. This place goes hard. Serious food and drink without taking itself too seriously. Ambiance is like a hallucination of a 70s Miami steakhouse. The Guinea pig mascot is on the wine glasses. I m still thinking of the meal weeks later.
Instant classic. I cannot say enough about the food - everything we tried was done to perfection (the banoffee pie was life-changing). Wonderful ambience and the vibes of the staff were just what you d want - professional, friendly, helpful. It s cozy but polished and each dish and cocktail is thoughtful and well executed. Will be back.
A glamorous brasserie that s open for lunch with a wide-ranging menu (delicious chips and an unctuous omelette. Fresh oysters. We wanted about 10 things on the menu so we ll have to go back!), accessible and wonderful wine list, gorgeous lighting and colour palette, and kind servers? Oh sign us UP!
The restaurant decor is stunning! While the dishes were decent, the flavors fell flat. The cocktails were a highlight, and we did appreciate the overall ambiance and attentive service.
Wow! What an amazing experience at General Public. The food was top notch (as per usual with a Jen Agg establishment). The lions mane schnitzel was to die for. The bluefin carpaccio melted in the mouth. The service was perfect. We sat at the bar and the bartender was super lovely, giving us great recommendations and good conversation. The restaurant itself is beautiful. Some big nods to 90s nostalgia which felt cozy and chic at the same time. Loved it! Cant wait to try brunch.
Absolutely lovely experience - cant wait to come back!
My kind of place! Loved the decor and ambiance. Given it has only been open a few weeks, the service was flawless and no one missed a beat. Special shoutout to Erin who was wonderful and even went out of her way to ask if I could take one of the guinea pig wine glasses to go because I had one for a pet as a kid (I couldnt, only downside of the entire night, haha!). We had the bubbles and a bump, oysters, popcorn clams, bluefin carpaccio and tongue and tail pie. The wife had the cherry dessert and because Im different, I had the chicken wings. Both were very good. Grey Gardens is one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto and now I can say the same about General Public. Great work again Jen and team!
The food here is excellent--not to be overlooked. As was the service. But what really stood out for me was the awesome design of this space. You feel like youre in Palm Springs or L.A. Amazing color choices, wood panelling, fixtures. All the details were thought of and it was just nice to be in a restaurant that was chic, but not boring design-wise. Plus, so rare to see a two storey Toronto restaurant that gives a nice sense of airiness. Overall excellent experience! Went on a date the first time and would absolutely go back again.
Loved the space. Found service super attentive and gracious. Thought the value for the money, and portion sizes, were quite fair! The food was excellent! Highly recommend.
So lovely! Service was warm and welcoming, vibe was energetic but chill. Food was flavourful and thoughtful. Unfussy, uncomplicated, but clearly very thoughtful.
A wonderful dinner of skate wing with curry butter and labneh, baked oyster rarebit and banoffee pie. Cocktail was delicious with great vibes. Service was also excellent. Definitely going to go back to try more of their dishes. Vegetarian options: Endive salad, creamed leeks, potato roulade and glazed vegetables.
I miss the black hoof so much. The lamb tartare and pigs head terrine we had took me back. Must go again!
Wowwww. The food was fantastic and service was precise and unpretentious. Bartender was very helpful with explaining individual menu items. Handsdown the best shrimp cocktail we ve ever had and the wedge was an updated, better - still hearty - version. Will be back and recommending to others.
Opening night dinner: Fries, wedge, and tongue and tail pie were outstanding as were the desserts. Halibut was good but boring, curry lamb tartare, scallop crudo, fried pigs head terrine and popcorn mussels and clams were very good but nothing mind blowing. Service was good but not great. Atmosphere was super Second time happy hour: burger was incredible and unique. Service was much better. Third time brunch: breakfast sandwich is best in the city.
If you re lusting after a casual fine-dining vibe with a killer music playlist and cocktails that have serious Jenn Agg energy, General Public has you covered. The space is gorgeous, and the drink game is strong -- definitely worth sipping your way through the long bevvie menu. Now, the burger. Oh, the burger... its got potential, but sadly, both the very, very salty patty and the bun arrived a bit overcooked. A shame because you can tell theres something great hiding in there -- bone marrow! The beefeater fries? Malt powder-dusted and tasty enough, but they re a too-little portion. [If you re craving burger perfection, skip over to Dotty s on Dupont. Their burger is everything GP s wants to be but isn t (sorry, Jenn). Zen, juicy, perfect. And those Dottys beefeater fries? Larger, impeccably crispy, huge portion and complete with malt mayo. Dotty s knows what s up.] A quick note about the washrooms at GP -- nice to see them upstairs for a change, but what is going on with the thick hand soap? It s got that essential oil left out for way too long funk vibe. Not quite the fresh, clean scent you d hope for, though it s more of an odd quirk than a dealbreaker. At least it doesn t linger on your hands long enough to ruin the mirror selfie experience. In sum: Great drinks and atmosphere, but the burger&fries could use a little more attention. Lovely staff.
Loved GP. beautiful new restaurant. Deliciously designed. Modern schick take on English pub food. Highly recommend.
Beautiful ambience! So pretty! Great food and drinks! Can t wait to come back ! Thanks for the great evening !
Had a fabulous birthday dinner with my husband on the second floor of General Public. We felt welcomed the second we came through the door and Jen was actually the one who held the door open for us! Everything from the service, food and drink were executed perfectly. Portion sizes and quality match the price nicely. Our favourites were the rainbow trout tartare, NY strip (the sorrel verde omg) and the banoffee pie. Had a full dining experience in two hours, the perfect amount of time for me. We will return 100000%
4 stars, food and coffee not hot enough
Jen congratulations for another amazing new addition to the city . Simplicity with Sophistication. On entering is when a diners mood is set the place was filled in warmth and laughter. Fresh delicious food presented beautifully each bite begging for next bursting in flavours from around the world. Most importantly a shout out to the wonderful staff amazing chef thank you . Next one already planned. Patels .
Beautiful space with delicious food! Chips and lamb tartare were our highlights. Great addition to the neighborhood!
A beautiful spot with great dishes. Cant wait to be back
Great spot, love the decor. Yes, they have only been open for 2 days but still killed it. Happy to have this in the Geary st. Area. This will be our new regular spot! Vegetarian options: If you have any just mention and the kitchen will surely accommodate Dietary restrictions: If you have any just mention and the kitchen will surely accommodate
So happy this place opened in the neighbourhood. Wasnt sure what to expect being one of the first days it opened, didnt disappoint! Service was fantastic, decor and vibe were also amazing. We had the shrimp cocktail and wedge to start. Typically, dont enjoy blue cheese but really enjoyed it on the wedge. Not too overpowering just enough. Entrees and sides were fantastic with good portion sizes. The potato roulade was suprisingly light and paired perfectly with the new york strip and vegetables. Cant wait to come back.
Delicious, creative dishes at very reasonable price points for the amount and experience! Stunning interior and great atmosphere. The curry lamb tartare and blue fin carpaccio are must haves. The lion s mane schnitzel was a bit too greasy for us. Loved the creamed leeks and scallop crudo, too. The service was great; could ve been more attentive but it was the second night being open so makes sense. I liked that there were a diverse amount of non-alcoholic drink options and that our server made an effort to double check %s for me, I really appreciated that. Overall, fantastic first impression and can t wait to go again and try some of the other dishes we didn t get to.
Vibes are immaculate, service is impeccable and food is amazing
A great time in a beautiful space, great service despite being busy and just opening. Will be back to try other stuff on the quite large menu. Killer wedge salad and spicy marg, btw.
Flavour-town! Good vibes, amazing decor and vibrant dishes! From start to finish, everything felt thoughtfully curated. I cant wait to come back and explore more of the menu!
Geary Ave was missing a bit more of a fine dining experience so I was stoked when I found out what was opening. The food was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed every bite and found that each dish was super flavourful in its own way and thoughtfully put together. We ordered 5 dishes between two of us which was maybe 1 dish too much (or we shouldve swapped one for something lighter like a veggie). We know for next time now. Bluefin carpaccio was so good. The pickled onion really complimented it well. A simple and light dish to start. Recommend to get this to start. Halibut was thick and meaty, I would order this again and again. The sauce was pure butter bliss. Tip: it pairs really well with the potato side dish. Tongue and tail pie tasted very comforting. Made of oxtail and cow tongue. This is a very heavy dish, definitely want to share it. Banoffee pie was a perfect way to end the meal. It was not too sweet surprisingly considering what its made of. Not a large restaurant, but the space was designed well to fit groups of all sizes while still having your own privacy. Beautiful decor, you almost feel like youve transported to a different era. You dont even realize youre on Geary once your inside.
Went there for lunch and the food was fantastic. I ordered the curried lamb tartare, large salad, dippy eggs, and breakfast sandwich and can recommend them all The large salad with roasted vegetables was my fav but I can easily recommend everything I ordered. Chris is also a great guy.
We dont really need to go anywhere else now... Dietary restrictions: Very gluten friendly menu Food : 5/5 |
We went during first weekend open and had a delightful experience. clearly so much thought and effort put into the beautiful design of the space and innovative menu. Can t wait to come back to try the daytime menu.
Great atmosphere!! Inviting vibes! Delicious food and great service. Parking was a bit challenging though!
So, I walked into General Public, saw the decor, and thought, Wow, this place looks like it s going to be fire. Spoiler alert: the flames fizzled out pretty quick. We had a reservation, but apparently, that s just a suggestion, because we waited 30 minutes to be seated. And, yeah, I was calm at first, but then came the next level of fun. We finally get seated, and it takes another 30 minutes just to get a caviar bump and a champagne shot because apparently, popping a bottle and scooping some fish eggs is a Herculean task. Meanwhile, the staff was doing their best impersonation of ghosts, floating past us like we didn t exist. Then, the waiter takes our order without writing anything down. Bold move, bro. What could go wrong, right? Well, he shows up with half the food. We figured the rest would come 15 minutes later, we ask about the missing sides, and he s like, Oh, I forgot to put that in. Fabulous. At that point, we decided to call it a night. And guess what? Gratuity was already included probably why the service had the enthusiasm of a sloth on Ambien. We ended up next door at North of Brooklyn for some pizza slices because, well, at least there we knew we wouldn t have to wait 30 minutes for someone to remember our existence. Plus, pizza never disappoints unlike some restaurants I could mention! I might give them another shot in a few months, but right now, for the price and the experience? Yeah, hard pass.
What a fantastic evening! From start to finish everything was wonderful. The atmosphere was warm and buzzy. We had The Most Amazing server (wish we had caught her name). Everything we had to eat & drink was thoughtfully prepared perfection. Don t miss the bluefin carpaccio or scallop crudo. The curried skate wing was also delicious, as was the wedge salad. Not one for desserts, really, but since it was a birthday celebration we got a couple to share and the banoffee tart elicited gasps all around the table. The pairing with the Amaro Montenegro digestif really hit the spot. Also enjoyed the care that went into the non-alcoholic cocktail options. Not an afterthought at all! Will be back for sure!
Absolutely wonderful food and beautiful decor. The seating is intimate and very comfortable. We had the caviar served with Yorkshire puddings! Delicious! The dressing on the endive salad was perfect and the sauce on the halibut was to die for. We loved the huge, very tender pork chop, served with roast potatoes, yum. The suggested wine pairing was spot on, complementing the food to a tee. We tried three scrumptious desserts, all great. I think I liked the little upside down cake with cherries the most. And the service was impeccable. In sum, a lovely experience, to be repeated!
obviously this restaurant is beautiful. it is also delicious and cozy with fabulous service that makes you feel right at home. we had a brilliant lunch across much of the menu and enjoyed it all. drinks were on point with really interesting and fun cocktail and mocktail options. the butterscotch pudding was such a hit of nostalgia!
I went last Friday with my mom and my husband. We had a reservation at 7:30. We waited a couple of minutes to be seated, then were taken upstairs. The circular booth we were seated in was probably the most comfortable space I have ever sat in any restaurant, and it seemed designed purposely for three people (when does that ever happen??). While the hard surfaces upstairs let the chatter reverberate a bit more than I would have liked, I appreciated that the music was a bit quieter than downstairs. Our server was attentive and perfectly intuited how to meet the needs of each person at our table. The food was excellent: the bread basket was delightful, the fries were perfect, and the steak was like buttah. Cocktails were also good. I took zero photos of our meal in progress because I was enjoying it so much.
Just walking into this place from Geary is a delight--the street has an industrial feel and then you reach for an abnormally large golden doorknob and youre suddenly immersed in a very different vibe. Whatever you rest your attention on betrays thoughtfulness. The balcony railings, the cheeky names for menu items, the way the place seamlessly blends vintage and modern decor, the bathroom doors that are all different but still matching, the little gopher character appearing on the glasses and plates. Every dish we ordered was so well executed that when I return (and it will be soon) Ill be seriously torn between re-ordering all the same stuff or trying all new things because the menu curation has thoroughly earned my trust--the same goes for the cocktails. We sat at the bar in the back next to the oyster counter and were served our dishes by Jenn Agg herself who was running food for the bar orders, so that was also a pleasant surprise. If youre a foodie who lives north of downtown its practically your civic duty to patronize this place because we need restauranteurs to know weve got their back when they open trendy spots north of Bloor! Heres what we ordered, and I dont regret a single one: Halibut, Sausage, Tuna carpaccio, Wedge salad, Potato roulade, Mixed veggies with miso, Helter Skelter cocktail.
I tried to enjoy this place, but it is just another overhyped, underseasoned not much to write home about place.
At first walk in seems like a very interesting, unique vibe. Unfortunately: - super small portions - food quality is OK but very few stand outs - price to value ratio for quality and taste is low I wouldn t go back - we grabbed a slice of pizza from north of Brooklyn en route home and that hit the spot far better. We tried the shrimp trifle, baked oysters, kanpachi crudo, lamb tartare, striploin, rack of lamb, potatoe rouladde (spelling?) - potatoes were wow, steak was good. All else was OK.
We do not deserve Jen Agg. General Public is such a generous addition to Toronto dining, and thank goodness for it. The whole team s service is timely and excellent, and our server Neil not only made sure we got in Happy Hour drink orders with two minutes to spare, but he also shared his recent thoughts on Diddy ( ) that proved crucial to our dinner discourse. Talking Heads on the playlist, a perfect martini, precious shrimp cocktail, tinned butterscotch pudding, and an upscale South Florida vibe straight out of my grandparents retirement condo. In the best possible way. Already looking forward to the next visit. Thanks so much.
