514 Eglinton Ave W, Toronto, ON M5N 1A5, Canada
Dimly lit mainstay for steak, East Coast lobster & Chinese food, with vintage '60s Asian decor.
Have had both steak and crab here and both were excellent, you can get equally good steak for a similar price at many other steakhouses in Toronto but the seafood stood out to me. Side dishes weren't anything special but are included with some orders. It's not cheap but service was very friendly and to me it was worth it.
Consistency is the truest measure of performance. Hitting Chan for 20 years. Always perfect
We went in with hopes of this being a replacement in some way for Sea-Hi, my favorite Canadian Chinese restaurant (may it RIP). We ordered two egg rolls to start and enjoyed the fried noodles and (okay) homemade plum sauce. The egg rolls arrived almost burnt. Cutting one open, we found shrivelled bean sprouts and GROUND PORK. Still, I thought it might taste good despite the texture being all wrong, but it didn't. It was horrible. Flavorless and dry and just bad. Any Chinese restaurant that can't even make a better egg roll than a food court restaurant needs to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror. If you look at their reviews, this used to be a good restaurant, clearly. My friend used to go for their steaks alone, which were fabulous and are now inedible. He took me here hoping the Chinese dishes would be better. We'll never know - we left after the horrible egg rolls. Service was exemplary, atmosphere lovely, food inedible. Please fix this, House of Chan.
My boyfriend and I were on the hunt for a good steak restaurant. We’ve tried The Keg and Outback, which were both good. Recently, we decided to try House of Chan on Eglinton. From the outside, the restaurant gives off an elegant and serious vibe, with its jade green color and red and gold accents. However, looks can be deceiving. The restaurant is not very large; it feels more like a fine dining Chinese restaurant. We sat in a booth, and while the servers were nice, our experience was ultimately disappointing. We ordered steak, which was decent but tasted like something I could cook at home. It felt like a $50 steak, but we paid $88 and $90 for each! The price was definitely not justified. House of Chan is located in a wealthy neighborhood in Eglinton, so I can see why some people might be drawn to it. They can afford to eat overly expensive chinese food! Maybe the chinese food was good, but we didn't try any. Based on our experience with the steak, the price is not worth it. If this place has a 4.5-star rating, the reviewers were probably paid. On TripAdvisor, it's rated 3.5, which seems more accurate. P.s the Martini sucks ! Never going back!!!! We felt we were robbed! Thats alot of money! But oh well! And its my bday!! Smh In summary, do not order steak here. It's not worth the price. This is my honest review.
Service was great! Couldn’t say that about the food. The food is ok but definitely overpriced, think it’s because of the area but I came here off of the reviews. Don’t like leaving not so great reviews but spending $90 ish plus for 3 dishes with quality that I could have got from a takeout spot I really thought it would be more..should have gone to mandarin if I knew the quality would be like this (no offence to mandarin) I’m simply comparing price with quality and for me I’ve had better, much better. 3/5 and that got bumped based on the great service nonetheless.
The 42 Oz US Prime Steak was unbelievable! The rest of the food was also very tasty. Service was excellent !! House of Chan was packed with people and now I know why. For sure we will return. Highly recommend.
The House of Chan is probably one of the best steakhouses in Toronto yet is simultaneously one of the best Chinese restaurants in Toronto. It is definitely worth a visit. No reservations though! The first thing you're thinking when you see this restaurant is "what cuisine is this? Is this Chinese food or a steakhouse or some fusion stuff?" The answer is that the House of Chan is both. This family-run place serves amazing steaks much like any other upscale steakhouse (pricy!) as far as I can tell. It also serves extraordinary Chinese food that you can get with or instead of the steaks. It's a great restaurant to go with vegetarians for this reason. In terms of my actual enjoyment of the food, I got the prime rib steak with a side of potatoes and (fried?) onions. The steak was one of the best steaks I've ever had and the potatoes were also very good. I'll let the photos of the other food speak for themselves since I didn't eat all of those, but according to the people I was with the food was also great. The service was also terrific, and I constantly was getting refills whenever I needed more water or whatever else. Great staff. The reason why this place doesn't have many reviews on Google Maps already is because it has a primarily older customer base. This isn't that surprising given that the restaurant looks like it's from a 50s movie, is somewhat dark, and has a bar. But hey, it's got amazing food and I'm not going to give it a 4 because the decor isn't trendy. The people who run the House of Chan have been here for decades and know what they have. This place was packed on the Tuesday night where we went there for a reason. Go here if you want to eat at one of the last authentic Toronto restaurants and don't mind paying $60 for a really good steak (the Chinese food is cheaper).
One of a kind in Toronto. Both Western and Asian dishes are very ok. Reasonable price for a tomahawk steak with excellent quality. House fried rice is also good. Surprise of the night was the onion fries. Really good. But skip the sizzling seafood platter, it's not served on any sizzling hot plate and quantity is skimpy.
Many new customers probably go to house of chan expecting different things. This isn t a traditional steak house, and it s not a Chinese restaurant. People who have been going here for 20+ years understand its more nuanced. It s both somewhere in between and neither of the two. They do a few things really really right, some things OK, but the atmosphere is homey and nostalgic for many, and the service and hospitality is incredible, and the little fix ins and accoutrements complete the experience. Its not fine dining, though its not cheap. it s a high end - casual hybrid, much like the cuisine. I feel like most newcomers order wrong - usually they get too much, and order a steak each, lobster, and treat the menu like a western steakhouse and ignore the Chinese. Or they do the opposite and go solely on the Chinese dishes. IMO, this is wrong, and a waste of what is supposed to be a collaborative meal of two cultures. The joy here is sharing dishes - dishes that normally aren t had at the same meal. Sliced steaks to share - the king rib eye is a winner every time. Start with a wonton soup as an app, egg rolls, chan ribs, a couple Chinese dishes and then a few steaks to share is how a group table might get the best experience. Occasionally stone crab or lobster add on. But not every time. I don t particularly love Chans Chinese dishes on a Chinese food standard, and I do love Chinese food. Rather, you should understand it as Canadian-Chinese comfort food, and they make excellent sides to a steak main, and the food is consistent. Nothing is likely going to wow you, except maybe the chan ribs, but no surprises either. The steaks are reliably great, but basic. The plum sauce and dry noodles is easily the best welcome present of all time, and that plum sauce comes in handy for a ton of other uses - wonton soup pork slices are next level with it. Same with the hot mustard on the ribs. Everyone has their own style here, their own order, balance. But for it to be a great meal, you need that balance. Oh, and the martinis, while basic are strong as hell and a classic.
Whenever my family comes in from New York, House of Chan is where we go for dinner
Beautiful presentation of lobster broken up for the perfect way to consume with utmost ease and delight. Waitstaff outstanding and hope to return very soon.
Was curious to check it out based on the buzz around how amazing the steaks are. Cool looking space and very attentive service. The food however was a let down. The steak was overcooked. The crab was not good. The sides were bland and sooooo uninspired. The cost is not in line with the quality of the food, but I expect the location of the restaurant drives the high prices. Because the space is cool, I might go back and try the Chinese food with 4-6 people so you can split the hefty bill.
Best Chinese restaurant in Yonge / Eglinton area. The ribs are delicious!!!
SCAMMERS! They tried to charge me 2 times more money than I supposed to pay! I thought its just a mistake! but they were pretending like they dont know, super weird people who give you such a fake attitude and smile! Plus its So overpriced!! Ordered 3 dishes, wonton soup was super small!!beef with vegetables cost 25$ and its like half portion! And the worst is ChanS Wontons!! Its just some overfried wheat staff like Wheat chips but without any meat and served with just some sweet sauce. And it cost 21$???!Are you kidding me?????? WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!
Amazing
Nice atmosphere and very helpful service. Great steak and back ribs. Good place to bring the kids. We come here for the steak, less so the Chinese. Would definitely be expensive for Chinese. Parking: Theres a big paid parking lot behind the restaurant plus street parking. Kid-friendliness: Good range of food, should be able to find something for everyone. Westernized Chinese and steak.
Decided to finally check this place out after hearing all the hype, and Im baffled what all the praise is about. The food is decent - nothing spectacular, and similar to any strip-plaza Chinese take-out restaurant. The big difference is the at least double to triple the price for all their dishes, and the much less portions you get from any other take-out Chinese restaurant. And as far as them having the best chicken balls, they were okay, but not even close to the best chicken balls in the world from my favorite Chinese restaurant King Asian on Hurontario in Mississauga Four of us (2 gals, 2 guys) ordered 6 dishes, and even with the smaller portions the gals ate with the guys eating the majority of all the dishes, we were all still hungry, and thats even after eating three bowls of their complimentary fried noodles. Sure the service was exceptional, but even that doesnt justify the over-priced and small-portioned dishes they serve. The restaurant was also way too dimly lit, you could barely see across the small room. Cant say we will ever go back there again. Youre better off paying the inflated UberEats or Skip pricing and order from your favorite take-out Chinese restaurant and have it delivered - youll still pay less, get bigger portions, and never have to leave your couch.
The mustard tasted like PVC paste, not sure why this was good enough to be served as a condiment. plus this Cantonese dish of chowmein was tasteless wasted money buying that.
Lobster and steak...yum. but they also had a bunch if other stuff. We spoke with some life long regulars who said everything on the menu was good. The place was busy, so I assume they are right. Will definitely go back.
Best steakhouse in Toronto for almost a century. Reluctant to rate for fear of giving away the secret (and making the wait longer) but great family businesses deserve it.
The service here is always so genuinely friendly and welcoming, that you right away know youll be coming back again. The food? That just seals the deal, it is hot, fresh, and every dish Ive tried has been delicious! We love the steak and lobster, so dont skip past that I the menu. The general tao, lemon chicken, pork fried rice and chicken balls are all the best Ive had. We rave about this hidden gem and reccomend it with confidence.
Always quick and fresh delivery. Great food with classic Toronto nostalgia.
I ve lived in the neighborhood for a long time and only started coming to House of Chan recently! My only regret is not knowing about it sooner. The food is great, the staff is so friendly, and the whole family loves it!
Classic fine dining decor. Amazing staff. They are friendly and courteous. The food is astounding, great quality and flavorful. The only downside is that it is quite expensive.
Wonderful food and ambiance, great seafood and Chinese dishes
I have been wanting to go to this restaurant since a child, I finally decided to go early this year and was extremely disappointed in the food, the ambiance is awesome and the workers are very friendly but the food was very bland, very mid. As well prices are kind of ridiculous in relation to the portions you receive. First and last time there.
The food was tasty. Small portions. Over priced. The waiter seemed impatient. Small restaurant.
Classic North American Chinese Food. Excellent steaks. Superb service. Food : 4/5
Amazing service, steaks, and seafood. Everyone from the moment you walk in gives amazing service. While the presentation can be a bit odd and borderline brazen, e.g. sliced raw onion, steak on a white plate, that adds to the experience in a way. There is a confidence in what youre provided that most places couldnt pull off. Always enjoy an evening at Chan!
Ordered steamed lobster expected it be juicy. Was very dry. Service was excellent. No goes there for the ambulance just for the excellent food.
One of my favorite spots in TO. Classic old school dishes and wonderful steaks. Try the taste sensation, you wont find them anywhere else. Not cheap but I always leave satisfied.
Porterhouse medium rare is the best in the city.....and so is the key lime pie(which is flown in from NYC).
Food court quality Asian food at Michelin Star prices.
Air was stuffy and had an odour. Food was ok...have had better. Service was friendly but slow. Maybe it was a bad day.
Amazing restaurant where you can have one of the best steak and lobsters in town or go for high quality chinese food instead. The only drawback is you are not able to make a reservation.
Disappointed in the quality and amount of Chinese food, not a great idea. Very underwhelmed
We tried a few appetizers and mains, what stood out was the STEAK! perfectly executed steak that will bring me back. I have no comment on the rest of the food. We didn t get the lobster but it looked nice on the other tables. A Chinese resting might not be your go to for steak but totally worth it here.
I have no idea what all the fuss is about with this place. I wasnt all that impressed. Food is meh. Oh well...
I used to Be a Regular at Chans, Once a week type deal. I have always liked their STEAKS & LOBSTER. Their Chinese Food is a Disappointment.
Great steaks and Chinese food with warm service. Wine list could be better!
It had been years since I visited the Chan but as it so happened I had dinner there twice this past week yes the prices are a bit high but you can t take away the quality of the steak that they serve perfectly done and the service is fantastic . The fried noodles and dipping sauce is addictive. Needless to say my partner snd I really enjoyed the evening and I would highly recommend the Chan for a special dinner out
Great atmosphere, service and steak. I love the look of this place inside and out. It has a dimly lit but warm feel. We had a marvellous and humorous server and our experience was very unrushed as we spent hours there talking and eating. I had the sirloin and it was one of the best steaks I ve had. The French fried onions were great. The menu has lots of interesting Chinese options as well, so you can try some unique pairings of mains and appetizers. Price point is not low but the value is solid. Glad I finally tried this place as it is a Toronto institution. I ll definitely be back.
Nothing compares to the steak here. Full stop. They have lobster too, maybe its great. I will never know, I will only ever eat the same order again and again.
One of my favourite restaurants in Toronto! My family and I have been going for years. I recommend the butterfly shrimp and a steak (all of them are great). The service is also amazing and all the staff are extremely kind and attentive. I look forward to coming back.
Best Chinese food hands down! Must try the lobster.
Very delicious and friendly
Dinner was good, prices are very high. My wife orders fried rice and a veggie lo mein. It cost almost almost 40$ after tip and tax.. prices are outrageous imo
Great meal, service was second to none. Lobster, (not mine), was apparently very well prepared, and my steak was perfect.
As usual lobster dinner was delicious and service was excellent.
When I go out to eat my reviews are based on cost to quality. High cost, low quality is very bad while low cost to high quality is very good. Now to House of Chan and what I liked: service was great, decor awesome. What I did not like on the night I attended: my food was very disappointing (lemon chicken). Maybe i should have tried something else. Other comments: Price was a touch high for the portion of food received. Overall, I will probably not return to this restaurant.
Bad expensive Chinese food and very expensive steak that has no flavour. If you want a good steak dinner, go to Mortons instead.
NOT AS GOOD AS THE OLD LOCATION,THAT WAS GREAT ILL PASS ON THIS PLACE AGAIN, NOT WORTH IT
Quick service fun atmosphere
Sad, it used to be so much better.
The back ribs are incomparable. Best in the city by far. If you have been to chan and haven t tried them, give them a try. The New York steak is also delicious and you can never go wrong with it.
Amazing service with a pleasant, cozy atmosphere! The steak here tastes amazing and the seafood has tons of flavour. Definitely a top quality place for a Chinese Canadian style steak and seafood place!
This place is legendary though I dont really know why. Service is great but we shared a 2 lb lobster and a sirloin. The lob$ter was a little undercooked, the $teak quite ordinary, the $ide$ not worth what they co$t. At these prices the food should be as great as the service but it isnt. If value is irrelevant and $260 for two (with tip and 2 small glasses of wine) is fine, heres your restaurant, but for that money two can dine very well elsewhere twice.
This is a new location for House of Chan that opened about a year or two ago. It has captured the atmosphere of the original, and is a nice and lively restaurant for steaks, seafood, and Chinese food, which I would describe as Cantonese, for the most part. It is a bit pricey, but well worth it for an enjoyable night out. The white table cloths are a nice touch. Great place for a date-night!
One of the strangest dinners and restaurants I ve ever been to. The decor is very tacky and dated but for some it could be considered retro . The menu is a combination of western Chinese with steak and lobster. The table setting is white linen fine dining but the plating and overall food presentation did not follow. We had wanted to try this place since moving into the neighbourhood and can t say we ll make a second visit. We ordered a porterhouse, prime rib steak, and chicken/veg on sizzling rice and a wonton soup. Wonton soup was a 1/10 with terrible tasting broth and small portions of wontons. Porterhouse came with a side of raw vegetables (which to be fair was clearly stated by the server) consisting of raw onions, a stalk of celery, and thick slices of tomatoes) but the steak was over cooked and lacked in flavour. The prime rib steak was very good, albeit it was undercooked and much closer to rare than the medium rare we ordered - also both steaks seemed to be much smaller than advertised. Finally the Chinese dish with chicken/veg, a huge amount of celery was cooked with almost raw onions dumped on a bed of what I can only describe as deep fried crispy rice. The food itself would ve been okay at maybe half the price as they were quite outrageously priced. Overall quite a disappointing meal and I would caution anyone from visiting.
Best food in the city
The food is fresh. It s over priced and bland. I ordered an expensive seafood dish and it was mostly vegetables. The drinks were just sweet (you tasted zero liquor). I love Chinese food, I have eaten it internationally. This food sorry to say is lacking and for what you pay? They should strive to do better.
I went on a dinner date with my mom here and it was absolutely exquisite! From the Chinese style lobster to our blue rare steak, we were impressed! Absolutely loved my meal here! A must visit!
this is the best restaurant in the city, and its not particularly close.
If you feeling like eating chinese food, steak, and lobster with A1 service in a cozy atmosphere. Come here.
Delicious food and great people! The delivery is quick too.
Fast friendly service. Food is excellent.
One on my go toos Great food Great people Amazing lobsters
VERY GOOD FOOD! Service was outstanding and the beef was really amazing. It is too expensive for us so we will not be able to go there regularly, still very happy to have discovered it!
Best steak. Period.
Ribs and butterfly shrimp. Nothing better than that.
Always has amazing consistently great food!
Too small portion, too overpriced!!! Most of the plate is like $20+ and the portion was for 1 person, could not be shared at all. We came in as group of 4 people just to be full - walked out with $250 bill for Chinese food ???? No thanks, first and last visit.
Fine dining and the dishes are taste.
Best steak and lobster in the city. The Chan is an iconic mid town institution. The won ton soup is not bad either. Might sound strange but its a great combination.
Its such a treat coming here, its not only a nostalgic experience but the food is just as wonderful all these years later. Chicken balls are golden, huge, crisp to perfection, and filled with good chicken, and the steak is cooked & seasoned to perfection and always a great share item on the table. Service is great, it always has been. Would love if House of Chan could be a place we could go throughout the rest of our lives.
This is a true classic. Excellent food and service. Delicious steaks, seafood and Chinese cuisine. The atmosphere is really warm and comfortable. Its expensive, but worth it. Its a good place to have an intimate dinner or to celebrate an occasion.
Have been coming here since I was a kid; one of my favorite restaurants.... Best dishes are rib eye steak, long BBQ spare ribs, dry salted breaded ribs, dynamite chicken! And very friendly staff
Always consistent. Excellent Spare Ribs and Steak. Great service.
One of the best steaks in the city
The food was amazing! The service was so fast it was crazy! Great experience
Love this place have gone since I was a little kid always amazing
Amazing food, amazing service and phenomenal staff.
Good food not great.Very pricey for what you get.
First of all : fantastic service. Congrats to the staff. Steak was juicy and cooked to perfection and fried onions were delicious. Cant wait to dine again and try the other items on the menu
Birthday dinner tonight. Very good in all aspects.
I guess Im biased, Ive been enjoying House if Chan for over 40 years. Always delicious!
My friends recommended it s a place with quality steak within the price range which cost a bit more than The Keg. It s my first attempt to try for a table of 4 of us. Sorry, it s really disappointed for the representation and quality! It s actually way over cooked for medium rare and even can taste the burned bitter taste too. Thus I am unable to finish it.
Amazing service, food was delicious and quick! Top notch!
Nice friendly service and excellent steak and lobster.
Just ok...no reservations, steak was not anything worth waiting for, good service
Always fast always good.
This is a true Toronto gem. Service is always great too. My personal favourites are the lobster, wonton soup, dry crispy ribs, fried onions and general tao chicken.
Old school flavour
The steak is not a food, it is a experience!
Great old school Chinese food restaurant. Also, they grill a mean steak.
Different location same old food!!!
Great steak and lobster
They have done a great job recreating the original House of Chan in its new location. Good food and good staff.
Amazingly the same great food and service in a new smaller location. All the food is fresh and plenty of it for what you pay for. Can be warm inside due to the smaller size but wasnt a big deal. The place can get pretty loud though when busy. We will be back!
The best place to go for lobster n stone crab. The service is tops.
Good food, fast delivery. Steaks and lobster are there specialty.
Good food. Known for great steak and various cuts of meats, plus good Asian food.
Good steak over, totally over price and poor menu.
Fantastic steak and very friendly staff. No reservations here so go early! Convenient Green P parking lot just behind the restaurant as well.
Because sometimes you just feel like a nice medium rare steak and egg roll...
Not sure what the fuss is about. Over priced steak. Yes yummy but other places are just as yummy for less money. The service was AMAZING and the egg roll real good.
If you want to fix your craving for chinese food and steak at the same time, this is the perfect place. The ambient is very typical chinese restaurant if you know what I mean.. like a set of a chinese restaurant in a Hollywood movie. No dry age steaks but the quality of the meat is still very good. I am surprise how good the filet mignon with stirred fried vegetable taste. This is a great example of simple things done right. The chinese food are also very good. It is adjusted towards Canadian taste buds but still authentic in my opinion. A little pricy but I think is worth the experience. Just make sure to reserve in advance.
Steak and lobster done right !!
Fine steaks, fried onions, yum.
Great steaks! Friendly wait staff. Great experience all around!
Attended here twice. Once with son and once with whole family. I enjoyed the sirloin here - good cut of beef. The won-ton soup was excellent - the slices of relatively lean pork were a good addition. The side of vegetables accompanying the steak is very crude and I wouldnt recommend it - try the chef salad instead. Egg roll a bit disappointing. Pork inside it was grey and tasteless. Didnt especially enjoy the fried rice either. Beef and broccoli a recommended dish, however.
Amazing food
