It was decided somewhere between the end of bottle one and the middle of bottle two that it would be a French Diner, and as soon as we put 'French' and Diner' together, the menu basically wrote itself. There is a strong connective line between bistro classics and diner standards: comfort food, so it was easy to see how happily beef (cheek) bourguignon would share menu space with meatloaf and mashed potatoes, or how natural it seemed to have a choice between steak frites and chicken fried steak. It all comes together in a beautifully lit room that calls back to an old school diner from a bistro’s landline, all pushed through a smudgy, deco lens. Our main goal is simple, we just want you to have a nice time.
My husband and I went out to eat at Le Swan for the first time last night. We never get date nights and we were super excited to dine! I'm a big fan of Jen Agg and le swan is a true gen among her collection of amazing restaurants. We ordered two cocktails, Boys Don't Cry and Cherry Coloured Funk. Both were phenomenal in creativity and taste. Boys don't cry was very refreshing and light, and Cherry Coloured Funk was so delicately layered in delicious winter flavours. For our food, we ordered the grilled cheese and corn dogs to start, which were a gourmet comfort food dream! Our entrees we ordered the beef bourguignon and the steak frites. Both dishes made me feel like I was back in my French Canadian grandma's dining room. The bourguignon was melt in your mouth tender and the gravy was perfect in flavour. All night was just hit after hit of amazing dishes and cocktails. And to top it off, the server, Maddy, gave us a taste of local sweet vermouth when we said we were too full for dessert. Her service was next level and you could tell the other diners around us loved her as well. We cannot wait to come back and to try other menu items and soak in the cozy atmosphere.
I recently visited Le Swan in Toronto for a friend’s birthday with a group of four, and the experience was incredibly disappointing. The evening started well enough, but things took a sharp turn when the bartender approached our table and told us to be quiet because we were "too loud." This was shocking and embarrassing, as we weren’t being disruptive—just enjoying a birthday celebration like any group would. Later, when the dessert menu was brought out, we decided not to order anything because of how poorly we had been treated. Instead of making any effort to make amends or offer a small token for my friend’s birthday, they brought us a plate with a lit candle on it. No dessert, nothing special—just a candle. To top it all off, we had spent $450 on dinner for four people, and this was how they chose to handle a birthday celebration? It was insulting and left us feeling unwelcome. Don't even bring the candle... Le Swan needs to seriously rethink their approach to customer service. This was supposed to be a special night, and it was completely ruined. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a positive dining experience.
Super lovely dinner spot, great for an intimate night out. The vibe is incredibly sweet- cozy, dim, bustling, and with lots of swan decor everywhere! Definitely check out the bathroom here for a cute mirror selfie. The menu is small and very well curated- both food and drinks. We ordered the steak frites platter and a banana foster. Green beans were incredible, fries were incredible, steak was incredible. Banana foster was incredible. It would’ve been a really perfect night if not for our server. I understand that the place was busy, but he had us feeling uncomfortable on several occasions throughout the evening. We felt rushed with ordering, and a bit dismissed with a huff when we passed on ordering drinks or an appetizer. I knew I wasn’t making up the attitude when he brought us the slip for the bill and slammed the cardholder down while walking by- not even giving us a glance. I understand that the service industry is brutal, but for a nice meal out it sucked to have service like this. The one thing I’d like to mention is that we were out for a graduation dinner (which I wrote in the resy notes) and they gave us a lit candle with dessert- super cute and lightened up our mood with the odd service. Would come again, but might be a bit wary!
A delicious, cozy, food spot! We went for dinner to celebrate our anniversary and had a blast. We got the oysters (not listed on the menu but def recommend!), onion rings, steak platter, mashed potatoes and apple cake as recommended by our server. The onion rings were great, sweet and salty and very crunchy. Yes, get the steak! The meat is very tender and juicy, the fries were extra crispy, and the beans was the perfect acidity to cut through all the creaminess. The mashed potatoes is one of my favourites in the whole city! Apple cake was on the sweeter side, not sure if would reorder that one again. For drinks we got their Ocean Mary and this ‘Lillet cherry cola’ cocktails. Both were delicious and would recommend—esp if you like caesar’s or your cocktails on the sweeter side. They also gave us two glasses of sparkling wine on the house to celebrate! Service was very attentive and my partner and I had our waters refilled very frequently! It became like a game for us and my partner timed them, at most it took 4 min from drinking water to refill lol. All in all, delicious and fun night out!
This was my second visit, this time on the patio with a friend and her pup. We enjoyed the oysters and their classic grilled cheese. It’s a great spot for casual bites and a relaxed atmosphere, but the flavors in the classic dishes weren’t as elevated as I’d hoped. Overall, a solid option for a laid-back meal, but don’t expect anything too fancy.
Steak frites was the best dish! Tender meat and yummy fries but the green beans were a bit too salty. The fondue was pretty tasty as well and a good appetizer. We requested an espresso martini and they delivered even though it wasn't on the menu! Their milkshakes were pretty good but nothing special. The place is quite small so fair warning that I can get noisy when busy. Great service, low lighting and sweetly simple atmosphere.
We came here on a Thursday night without a reservation and managed to get seated at the bar. The space is cozy and beautiful! We ordered the fondue for two, tuna melt, fried chicken, and cucumber tarragon spritz. The fondue was delicious and came quickly. However, our other items took quite a while. The fried chicken was tender, juicy, and crispy, and the fennel coleslaw was great! A little bit too much on the sweet side, however. The tuna melt was a surprise - flavourful and VERY cheesy - a little too salty and too much sauce, in my opinion, though. The service was accommodating but felt quite passive-aggressive. Worth checking out, for sure!
Délicieuse in every way! Le Swan is a classic, chic, elevated French style diner. The food is amazing, service is top notch & the cocktails are delicious. We loved everything & had such a great time there. Our server was friendly, funny & very knowledgeable about the menu. He made excellent suggestions of both drinks & food. Some of our highlights were, well, everything! We are excited to go back to try the items we didn’t get! Pics are from a couple different visits but couldn’t resist posting because this place is just so so good in every way! We love it. Shout out to Adam - our fav! Thanks for always making our experience the best.
Onion ring tower was delicious & the steak platter was convenient and yummy to share with a friend!
I took my partner to this place for our four year anniversary. And I could not have made a better choice for that. Both of us normally don t like to eat steak and mashed potatoes, but this place genuinely serves the most amazing food despite of being steak and mashed potatoes and for the price point that you pay compared to the quality of the food, it is well beyond worth it The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, despite obviously being our first time there they even gave us a small little drink, complementary because it was our anniversary. Definitely looking forward to bringing some friends here. we also got a corndog appetizer because we wanted an appetizer and it was good. It s hard to write a review on a place that s good because of how good it is in fact if you re still reading this review, I feel like at this point you re just confirming whether or not it s good. Trust me, it s good just go here. Ask questions later. Vegetarian options: The restaurant does offer some minor vegetarian options, but it markets itself as a French diner and French cuisine does prefer its focus on meat. I d recommend you just look at the menu before you make your reservation to make sure that this would be a good choice for you Dietary restrictions: The staff are very respectable in regards to dietary restrictions. You were given multiple opportunities to present any restrictions before the reservation and even before you start ordering anything. Parking: The restaurant is located on Queen Street. Just passed Trinity Bellwoods Park. given the age of the neighbourhood and obviously the age of the building there isn t any built-in parking. But if you re going to a place like this, you re probably not bothered about that and if you are go somewhere else. Kid-friendliness: given that this place operates as a bar as well as a restaurant, it might not be a kid friendly place and most of the diners and patrons are probably looking for a more adult night out. Wheelchair accessibility: Unfortunately, given that this restaurant is located in an older building. There s only so much that the owners can do to build out and make this place accessible and there s only so much space that they have access to do that with. If you re in a wheelchair in here, it will probably be a little bit cramped. My personal suggestion is to call them beforehand and inquire about any other wheelchair accessible options for yourself.
Steak frites were fantastic. Cocktails were great. Loved the ambiance. Server was a bit disorganized.
Very tasty food. It s nice to have choices between the French menu and the diner menu. The only gripe I would have is the portions are a little small. For example, if the loaf comes with mashed potatoes, it isn t much to serve the mashed as a proper side rather than a smear on the plate that s more of a garnish than an accompaniment.
Cozy and chic with good food
Had one of the best dining experiences Ive had in a long time here last Friday. Luckily they were able accommodate a last minute reservation for my birthday and the service we received was nothing short of exceptional. We sat at the bar with Adam and he really guided our experience, making great food & bev recommendations throughout the night and even surprising me with one of my favourite chartreuse cocktails. Overall amazing hospitality from start to finish, happy to say Ive already booked a follow up reservation!
I went to have dinner with my friends for a birthday celebration. The place and food were amazing, and we had such a good time. However, I would like to especially mention the great service that Alana provided us. She made us feel super comfortable at all times; it honestly felt like she was hosting us in her own home very lovely and professional. Thank you so much for the experience!
The staff was great. The fondue was incredible. I usually don t like steak tartare, but this one was sublime. I also highly recommend the coconut absinthe milkshake
A bit too loud but food was fantastic and cocktails were spot on
Came here on my birthday! Server was amazing. We started with the corn dogs, potatoe salad and beef tartar. For mains we all split the steak platter which was probably the best steak I ve had in the city so far. The fries were also perfect as well as the delicious buttery garlicky green beans. I got the bananas foster for dessert and it was sooo yum. Will definitely be back next time I m craving some steak frites. Perfectly cozy for winter I adore this place.
Perfection!
Great food, excellent service. Well be back soon!
Cozy restaurant with delicious food and wonderful service
Have returned. Highly recommended. IG: @trebzheng Make a booking. This cosy diner seating establishment will be sure to impress your date. Order the Steak Fries and Beans. Oysters: Fresh and served with the usual acompanyments. Steak Tartare: Not my favorite one in Toronto, but has its own character with less mustard and more texture in the beef. Would suggest they grill or warm the bread up. Beans: Yes, get the beans. Steak Frites: Perfectly cooked, high grade beef. Tender yet cut thick giving you a beefy bite, good marbling too by the taste of it. Fries are actually pretty decent with a solid crunch. Bourguignon: Tender, fall apart beef with a creamy delicate mash and gravy. Perfect winter food. Old Fashioned: Clear Ice, clean taste and everything in balance. Not overly strong like some. Overall, a very pleasant night. Special thanks to our host and kitchen. Takes AMEX. $80-$100pp. July 2023: Beef Tartare: Savoury and they took the feedback on toasting the bread. Its now thin and crisp without being crunchy and hard. Beef is fresh and tasty. October 2024 5th+ visit. Absolutely top notch. One of the finest places in Toronto. Celebrating our first date in this location - service made it so memorable and this will be our place for hopefully years to come. Tartare still one of my top 10 in Toronto. Steak Frites are fantastic for sharing. Wines are a little pricey now. The milkshake was actually so so amazing, I never thought to try it, but now its a must order.
The cocktails are unique and amazing and all the food we ordered was out of this world. I was recommended this place and now Im going to HIGHLY recommend it as well!
Overall always a good experience. The Steak Tartar was very bland, but the corn dogs were delicious. Our steak frites came out cooked to the perfect medium rare but came out so cold the butter did not melt. Overall flavour was great but I would have been nice if it was hot. Our server was attentive but did not really make an effort to converse with us. Le Swan is a great date night spot and regardless of a couple minor errors that were made I would definitely make a trip back!
I ordered the steak tartare and I it was amazing. The waitress was very kind (I think her name is Kim), always worried about us, asking if we had any questions or how was everything going. I really enjoyed everything.
Really lovely place. Nice ambiance and the steak was perfectly cooked. I usually don t like bananas but took the recommendation to try the bananas foster and it was amazing.
Wowzers!
perfect. friendly staff in an adorable little old diner serving french fare and diner classics? and the bar is walk in only? heaven
Going to Le Swan is 60% experience and 40% the actual food. Dont get me wrong, the food is SUPERB, but the staff... Oh, the staff is BEYOND. Theyre the welcome at, the friendliest, the nicest, all the good superlatives. Adam recognized my mum from her last visit a year ago and that made her night. Its the perfect place to sit at the bar if youre solo, and also perfect of youre in a small group of friends or in a date. I guess its just perfect.
Second visit and I was again, happy to the have chosen this place to wrap up my week.
I cant say enough good things about this restaurant everything was absolutely exceptional! From the moment we walked in, the service was top-notch. Adam, who helped with our reservations, was incredibly patient and accommodating. We had to change our party size several times right up until the last minute, but Adam remained welcoming and friendly throughout the entire process, making everything smooth and stress-free. The servers were all outstanding attentive, kind, and truly passionate about what they do. And the food? Spectacular. Every dish was a masterpiece, bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. This place has set the bar for dining experiences, and I cant wait to return!
Always one of our favorite places to dine, the food has been consistently great with service to match, I have gone through almost every item in the list and everything is better than good but you be the judge. Huge thanks to Adam, Kim and Matty, thanks for making our experience perfect each time
One of my favourite restaurants in the city. Simple dishes done perfectly. The steak tartare, steak frites and roast chicken are my favourite items. The corn dogs are also amazing. The only thing I wouldn t order again is the Niçoise salad. But the service is always great here. I love that they take reservations. And the food and drinks are unmatched. Always a great experience at Le Swan.
Cute spot for a date. I liked the meatloaf more than the steak frites, which I found was nothing special
Love a high/low restaurant. Oysters + corn dogs, nicoise + wedge salad, great cocktails and wine.
Everything is great. The chicken platter was amazing.
Four of us came in the evening. The service was good, but we were really disappointed with the food, especially given the reviews. The proportions of the dishes were poorly distributed. The chicken wasnt cooked, and the potatoes werent either. The bottle of wine was the only thing four of us were able to share at the same time. When the bill arrived, no goodwill gesture was offered. Damage.
Discovering Le Swan was a happy accident when searching for Toronto s best niçoise salad during the pandemic. Not only does it have (truly) THE BEST Niçoise salad I ve had ANYWHERE in the world, but the remainder of its small menu is also REALLY good! Our favourites remain their steak frites and sole meunière. Of course, this should come as no surprise from a Jen Agg restaurant. But while the food is amazing (we ve had the VERY odd occasion where the fish in the salad is just a little too fishy, or the steak is a little over), their service is where they truly shine. My boyfriend and I come once every 2-3 months, sometimes more (it would be EVEN more if we lived closer). This past summer, we have had an influx of out of town guests and we have brought every single one of them to Le Swan. However our last set of guests had very specific dietary restrictions that are hard to meet at ANY restaurant, and we often run into issues at most restaurants because of it. Sadly, we also ran into issues here. Despite that, our server and the manager did absolutely everything they could to make it right, and the night ended on an incredibly positive note. If we weren t already in love with this restaurant, we would have fallen right then and there. Go for the food, return for the service
Everything on the menu that I have ordered so far is amazing down to the drinks. Environment is diner style. The service is very unwelcoming and passive aggressive. I ve gone many times, but especially the last two the staff seemed very short-fused and treated us as if we were an inconvenience. Makes me not want to return
Everything was absolutely delicious and service was charming. We will be back!
Ive eaten here a few times and cant fault it. The food is always incredible, the atmosphere is great for a date night or catching up with friends. The wine selection is good, I just wish they had a draft beer. Hot tip: get the steak platter ($76), shared between two with a bottle of red. An unbeatable dinner.
Great cozy little rustic french diner. Reasonably priced. Great for a drink at the bar or dining in one of the booths. Steak tartare 10/10
I went here about 4 months ago for my first date with a girl I absolutely love. It was a fantastic experience and our service was quite good, so it s unfortunate to hear its hit and miss in the other reviews. A couple dishes took some time but it was nothing egregious and the server was very good about updating/checking in on us. Food and cocktails are all really good but don t expect anything too out there . It s a pretty classic French spot aside from the atmosphere, which is a lot cuter/cozier than most contemporaries!
Really cute spot with tasty comfort food, but above all, excellent service. We were hit with some bad news during our meal and our server brought us dessert on the house. This was beyond sweet- she absolutely did not have to do that. Thank you thank you!
The fries are so GOOD, and the steak was delicious and tender. The wedge salad and corn dogs were also amazing.
Great chicken, wonderful experience
Nice, small unpretentious spot. Had the Steak Frites platter and a reasonably priced bottle of wine. First time in my life Ive said these green beans are delicious. There was a medical emergency that the staff handled professionally and discretely which hardly slowed down our food. Madeline was/is a friendly and professional server, gave us great suggestions.
Talk about people who get hospitality. Is the food and drink great? Yes! But the people who work here are why I love being a quasi-regular here.
Loved the steak tartare and steak and frites! Service was great too
Came here on a Monday night at 9pm and we were able to get a table for 2 inside. I was surprised how busy it was on a Monday night. Great spot for a date, but it definitely isnt cheap. We ordered the salad nicoise, the steak tartare, the rotisserie chicken platter and the bananas foster to finish. The salad was a bit too sour for my liking but highly recommend the tartare and chicken. The chicken was super juicy and the green beans were delicious. Highly recommend and not rushing to come back as there are so many other restaurants to try at this price range (~$90 pp w a glass of wine each tax tip in).
Feels like you re in your rich friend s parents basement in the best way. Lots of dark woods, oldies playing and very cozy vibes. French diner comfort foods. Leave room for dessert, the bananas foster is yummy.
Disappointing since I ve heard good things and it s been on my list for a long time. The food was generally good though nothing memorable or that I d feel compelled to get again. The portion size for the steak platter was good. The service was pretty damn bad though. Our server didn t know the size of any of the three steaks on the menu, then when asked what comes on the platter just mentioned green beans - not the massive amount of fries. The worst was saved for the guy that I asked politely about my friends drink about after waiting for 15 minutes in a mostly empty restaurant as the bartender was cleaning up for close to which I received the response of okay yeah and walked away instead of a simple let me check on that . If you re so miserable at work it might be a good idea to find something else.
french food without the pretentiousness, le swan delivers on the food but the perfectly crafted ambiance is what to come back for. cozy and warm, great for a date or intimate gathering with friends and refreshing amongst the trendy & vibey restaurants in toronto. overall, would come back but might skip the cocktails. corn dog: a little gimmicky but still tasty steak tartare: good app if you like steak tartare steak frites platter: well made dish and good portion size (serves 2 people). fries and green beans also a hit.
Absolutely loved this place! Food was amazing ! Food
A Toronto must try If you go, you have to try the corndogs A lot of people said that the steak tartar was too salty. I disagree. I think it was perfect. Heads up a little pricey Definitely gonna come back probably one of my top five restaurants in Toronto right now
Le Swan is one of the gems of Toronto. Even though its still so new, it feels like a classic. The food is humble and delicious every time and the service is 10/10. I visited this evening with a friend and had the pleasure of being served by the kind and witty, Adam. He made our night extra special and we cant wait to visit again soon! Thank you Adam! PS the steak frittes are a must.
Absolutely love this place. Great food. Very attentive service and amazing wine. Highly recommend for a romantic cozy atmosphere. It s my partner and I s favourite go to for a wonderful date night. Try the steak frites platter it never disappoints. Bon Appetit!
Solid joint - went for dinner without reservations- so ended up on the patio. Food and drinks were good.
Food was amazing, great comfortable atmosphere, our server Adam was outstanding!
Amazing cocktails, steak, every thing is good. The best part is the ambiance and the booths
Been multiple times and have not been disappointed by anything on the menu. The food and drink cards change seasonally, so there is always something new to explore. Recommend making a reservation as it is typically quite busy.
No notes. Food was incredible! I had the meatloaf and mash, with a non-alcoholic cocktail, the Blue Velvet. My friend had the French Onion Soup and said it was similarly fantastic. The fries were probably the best I ve had in years - and I eat fries pretty much daily. Service was friendly and overall lovely, and we sat at the bar. The restaurant itself is beautiful in design. It was a busy night but that didn t slow anything down. Highly recommend Le Swan!
An absolute gem of a restaurant in the heart of West Queen West. Our server Maddy took such incredible care of us. Well priced and incredibly tasty food... we had the Salad Niçoise, Sole Meunière and Corn Dogs, and with some excellent wine pairings had a perfect meal. A must try!
Just went in for a snack. The tuna melt is what dreams are made of. Thank you
The food was good, service was great, and the atmosphere was very relaxing! It is a super quaint and unique place! I would go again!
Good food, fair price
This is a quaint French inspired bistro on Queen West that never disappoints. The cocktails are delightful, the steak frites are some of the best in the city, and the service and ambiance are superb.
I was truly impressed by my experience from start to finish at Le Swan. My friends and I normally do family style at restaurants we visit. Everything that touched our table was delicious! The Steak Tartare and Corn dogs were my favourites. For dessert we tried Banana Foster and the Apple cake - both an excellent choice for something sweet to finish off the night with. We will be back!
Food is always great. We love the steak frites platter than comes with the fries (mayo!) and green beans. We also always get the banana foster. The banana texture/ripeness can vary based on what they have on hand but the caramel drizzle and large (and perfectly round) vanilla scoop is so SO good! Milkshakes are good too. Note: there is an extra fee for the malt bits regardless of which flavour you order. I think their menu only mentions it for the chocolate shake. Wine glasses have a cute little swan etching on them. Be careful when going downstairs to use the bathroom. Ceiling is a bit low and you ll have to pass the kitchen. So watch out for the staff coming in/out. Parking: City parking. No dedicated spots for restaurant patrons. The 501 streetcar passes along the Main Street (Queen), but there are spots. If parking in the neighbourhood, be sure to read the signage as it s very residential. Wheelchair accessibility: Toilet is not wheelchair accessible.
I recently had a lovely experience at Le Swan! An intimate and low lit art deco influenced interior make this place ideal for a date, or a more sophisticated outing. Something I want to mention is the outstanding service I received. I happen to be gluten intolerant, and I was very pleased with how in depth and helpful the waiter was in informing me about which items I could eat, what substitutions could be made, and what I should avoid due to cross contamination. During the entire meal, I felt well taken care of in regards to my gluten intolerance, and was assured multiple times measures were followed to ensure my dish was safe. The food and drinks themselves were delicious. We had a Salade Niçoise and a Steak Frites, accompanied by orange wine. The Salade Niçoise, while not wholly traditional, tasted very nice. I liked the addition of sundried tomatoes. The sauce was also lovely, but it was definitely different than what I expected (not necessarily a bad thing). As for the steak, it was well cooked, the fries were crispy, and it was accompanied with a delicious seasoned mayo. I do think the potions were rather small for North American standards, but I used to live in France, so they were quite normal if you re comparing it to that. Overall I very much enjoyed my meal at Le Swan and I would recommend it! Dietary restrictions: Gluten Free
Ive only been to Le Swan once (for lunch), but it was an excellent experience. We started with a fish appetizer that I cant recall the name of (though it was fantastic). I had the trout rillette, my partner had the special (brie and duck sandwich) they had on that day (I am unsure how often the specials change). The rillette was incredible, cooked perfectly and so delicious. The sandwich was good aswell, though it was incredibly rich and too much to eat in one sitting so we took it home. The fries it came with were great as well so often I have bad fries in Toronto its always nice to find a good french fry spot. The server was very kind and was very knowledgeable about the wine they had available. The ambiance here was very cool. Old school diner vibe mixed with french fine dining. Very unique and fun experience. We have to go back as we didnt try the corn dogs which are apparently one of the best things on the menu.
The lightning is beautiful and the food is great in this cozy French restaurant.
Cozy place, lovely staff! Good drinks, good food, great service!
Excellent food and service. Tartare and steak frites were phenomenal.
Nice restaurant
-French Onion Soup -Salad Niçoise * -Steak Frites -Beef Bourguignon
Food was great until the green beans came out abysmal. Tasted like a chain smoker
Great food and service! Can t go wrong with the steak frites. Onion rings were also crazy
Came for my birthday dinner and it was spectacular! The fondue, corndog and beans are delicious but the steak frites were outstanding! So tender and flavourful, cooked perfectly! For the quality of food, the price is so reasonable! Will definitely be back. We made a reservation a couple weeks in advance and it was quite busy, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation! There was a decent amount of seating at the bar tho
Amazing food, I highly recommend the steak frites and banana foster. The flavoured butter they serve on the steak is delicious. It does get busy, but if you go before 6pm it s not too hectic.
I recently had a reservation at Le Swan with my mother to celebrate my graduation, and our server, Helene (I believe that was her name), was exceptional! She was kind, engaging, and very patient with my mother, who primarily speaks French, as we are from Montreal. We highly recommend Le Swan to anyone visiting Toronto! Thank you.
Came here for a small celebration for my sisters birthday. It was a great experience, even though we did not have reservations, the staff were still kind enough to give us a table. (well reserve next time!) We ordered the steak frites, steak tartare and the beef chili, finished with the bananas foster for dessert. The food was perfectly cooked and presented well. The fries are cooked in peanut oil, for those who have allergies, and the steak comes medium rare. Some tips for this restaurant, make a reservation in advance(!) its a small restaurant, so parties of more than 4 is hard for them to accommodate, get the steak frites!
Cozy diner near Trinity Bellwoods. Glad they were a restaurant open on a Monday. They have a split menu, French and the other more of a diner style menu. Its very cute and cozy inside, the staff are very chill and attentive and the drink selection is good.
adam was amazing!! great service, super funny and he gave the best recommendations! food was also great! green beans are a must.
Absolutely one of the most complete hospitality experiences in the city of Toronto. A must-try if you like high-quality food, old-world wines and attentive service.
3.5/5 Cute cozy french diner with many many fruit flies. Given it s still cold outside, the fruit flies seem to grow inside. We counted at least 12 fruit flies on the walls. It wasn t pleasant seeing them and dining. The best dish was steak tartare. Very fresh meat and not so much seasoning and sauces. So you can really enjoy the fresh meat itself. French onion soup was interesting but the bread, soup and cheese are all separated. It wasn t harmonized well. Salade nicoise was freshing but you can find the fish fishy. Corn dogs were just corn dogs with jalapeños. Steak frites platter s portion was disappointing. It was just a regular sized steak with so much fries. We ordered fries as a side and the side fries portion was less than the fries that came with the steak. Green beans were good. Overall, it s a fancy diner.
Had a reservation for 2 at 8pm. When we walked in the host greeted us with a what s up . The server seemed disinterested to say the least. When asked if he d recommend the steak frites over the beef tartar he replied, it really depends on if you re feeling having your meat cooked or raw ok. The steak came lukewarm. The fries were hot but heavily oiled. The banana foster was very good, the server however did forget to punch it in and was needed to be reminded. The experience was just disappointing overall, especially because our servers service did not seem uniform across all his tables.
This restaurant is just perfect. Fantastic service, flawless food and amazing drinks. One of my favourite spots in the city/country.
If I could give zero stars I would. The waitress was super rude. Their fries were soggy I told the waitress and she literally touched the fries in my plate, and squeezed it and said that s how our fries are. 5min later she came and threw a new plate with fried and said These are new ones and left.
This place is such a hidden gem! In addition to their very friendly and attentive service, as well as their intimate ambience, their food is so homey (think comfort food) but elevated. We started with the wedge salad (which was absolutely divine) and corn dogs - these were definitely the stars of the show, I would highly recommend! I then tried the beef bourguignon which was okay but the portion was too small for $31. We ended the night with bananas foster (which was meh), the chocolate terrine (which was a delectable balance of sweet and salty - highly recommend), and a vanilla malt milkshake (like I said, comfort food). I will definitely be returning and look forward to trying their other menu items :)
Food, service and ambience are sublime. Emphasis on service
So happy I stumbled upon this place. Incredible food. Tuna melt was to die for! Our server Adam was spectacular. So friendly and gave us great recommendations of what to try! Will definitely be back.
went there for our anniversary and everything was perfect - food, service and atmosphere.
came here tonight with my partner and Ryan absolutely made our experience 10/10. The attention to detail during our service made it a very memorable experience as we felt very welcome and taken care of. On top of that, the food was AMAZING. I recommend the Tuna melt for sure. Altogether an amazing date spot that will make your company think you re a total foodie ;)
American fare with fancy french prices. The food is mediocre, but fine. The service was functional and efficient - but not all that friendly. The decor is nice, and the aesthetic is classic and charming.
Steak frites and oyster were so good, highly recommended.
Delicious food & superb service! Weve been to Le Swan many times over the years and its one of our faves. Came in last week for a special dinner (hadnt been in a few years) and they did not disappoint! For food we had oysters (super stoked that they had them available), fries, mashed potatoes, green beans, tuna melt, meatloaf, and the chocolate terrine for dessert. We had a couple of vesper martinis with the oysters (perfection), glass of wine with the rest of the food, and pastis + other digestifs with dessert. We really enjoyed all the dishes. Comfort food at its best. Our server Adam was excellent. Super warm and funny. Had some great drink recommendations. Thanks Adam, youre the best! Great tunes. They played lots of John Prine songs, which we were super into. Vibes are always cozy with a hint of romance. Perfect for a date night.
Delicious food and cocktails (best steak tartare Ive eaten!), cozy atmosphere and very good service. Took a star off because I didnt enjoy the cakey onion rings - not my thing. Definitely on my favourite list. I want to try other things on the menu.
Cozy little unpretentious French diner with delicious food and helpful but not overbearing waitstaff.
I ate the swan and drank the pond
Small portions, overly seasoned and sour. Nicoise salad was like eating straight vinegar.
Amazing Everytime we go. Been 3-5 times now
This place has changed for the worst since I was here 10 years ago. Ordered the Niçoise salad and it was the quarter of the size I what I remember. It used to fill the plate, the bottom was lined with herbed seared potatoes, string beans and plenty of greens. Now it s just a vinegary mess with three mini triangles of tuna. And 1 half of a measly baby potato. Service is slow too. The onions were greasy and coating was a weird cakey onion donut.
I think this is my favourite place in Toronto. Food is amazing, vibe is perfect, service is always so friendly and fun, idk its perfect.
I really enjoyed my evening and the food was very tasty! Kim, you are da best Thank you, Food
Tiny portions. Great drinks though
We came here to celebrate a birthday, and we were really excited about the French onion soup and the steak frites platter. A lot of the items on the menu were interesting to say the least. We had heard great things about the hot chicken sandwich, but it was not our favourite. To describe the sandwich is like a thin slice of toast with Thanksgiving gravy and pieces of chicken breast and green peas on the top - felt like we were eating leftovers out of the fridge? The steak frites platter was overly salted in comparison to many other steak joints in the city (ex: la palette and cote de boeuf). The green beans, however, were the star of the show. In terms of service and ambiance it was lovely (we told them it was a birthday dinner and they even brought out a small candle at the end!) It is very much so like a French diner with dimly lit vibes and booths. I would come here if you ve tried all the other better steak places in the city and you were still curious about the menu items.
Amazing dining experience! We ordered the steak frites platter, an order of corn dogs and a few nova scotia oysters - more than enough food for two people, portion size as mentioned by other reviewers was not an issue for us. Everything was so delicious, we will be coming back very soon to try more.
I was here to celebrate a birthday and got the Steak Frites Platter, along with some salad. The steak portion seemed a little sad for what appeared to be a shareable for two? But I guess thats inflation for ya The mood and setting was on point though The service was above average up until the point when the waitress decided to tower over me as I was paying. I have no intention of stealing the card machine dont worry
Excellent place, simple food well made with very good service
Maybe we came on an off night, but the steak frites I ordered was tough and lukewarm. The server awkwardly said ive never had it here so I cant speak for it, implying it was a strange order. Not the friendliest of guys. Overall an odd and underwhelming experience for a popular French bistro.
Upscale diner chic serving French classics and innovative cocktail selections. Ordered the steak tartare to start and the meat was fresh and well-prepared, a nice way to cut the richness of our following dishes. Fondue was a little underwhelming as the cheese curdled quickly off heat and was served with plain white cubed bread. Loved the flavor of the chicken fried steak! More mash on the side wouldve been a great way to balance the amount of gravy. Would also recommend dipping the steak in the fondue. We finished off with the corn dogs, a huge hit! Very reasonable price point for Queen St. Coming back to try the steak frites.
A beautiful step back in time diner with amazing drinks and delicious food!
Can t wait to try everything on the menu !
Update 2023: We came here on a weekend evening without a reservation and we were able to get bar seating. They have hooks under the counter for you to hang your jackets and your bags. We just wanted a quick drink and we had a tuna melt and bananas Foster to share. The quality and ambiance are as amazing as last time that I came to this restaurant. Its just perfect for a romantic cozy date night. Highly recommend. 2022: A casual French bistro/diner with great ambiance and high quality dishes, le swan is a gem. My bf treated me to a dinner here; we made a reservation just in case, but it was not too busy. The servers were super nice and always refilled our water. We got a capuccino, steak tartare, tuna melt, a side of green beans, steak frites, and bananas Foster, all to share. Every single dish we had was delicious and ingredients are high quality and well prepared/presented. For example, the fries were the best I ever had, and the bananas Foster had perfectly crunchy bruleed sugar on top. I like that the menu is not too large, and it seems like every dish is their specialty. Everything is reasonably priced, and a good size. Our bill came to $100 after tax (before tip), but that was because we ordered so much. The downstairs washrooms are clean. We will be coming back to try other dishes!
Great spot, great food, probably the best fries Ive had in a long time.
Rotisserie chicken was great but the hot chicken sandwich was underwhelming. Seemed like they were rationing mashed potatoes and the chicken was tough (in stark contrast to the rotisserie which was delicious). Corn dog was also a super fun bite. The repeatedly condescending bar service made the experience significantly less enjoyable.
Absolutely incredible experience here. First off, staff are incredibly warm and approachable. Doing dry January i asked about their Seedlip Cocktail and they made me a bespoke drink based on a negroni. They hit it out of the ballpark. We also ordered the corn dogs as widely recommended (and rightfully so, despite not being a corn dog fan) as well as the famous tartare which was equally appetizing. Not sure why others comment on the portion sizes, its a french diner of course portions are small. Why is everyone obsessed with quantity? Have zero negative feedback and already excited to return and try everything else. 1 drink, split corn dog and one whole tartare i spent 40$.
Delicious food, fun and cozy atmosphere, and excellent service. Everything Ive tried has been excellent, tuna melt is the best in the city! I recommend making a reservation so you can sit in a booth.
Fairly affordable considering the quality and asthetic What a fun place with interesting menu options that appeal to everyone, recommend the fondue for certain Food : 5/5
Went for my birthday was a great time food was great but smaller portions- didnt leave hungry though, and the service was tops
[Sorry for lack of photos, in advance!] I typically always eat cuisine such as this at Le Select Bistro, but was pleasantly surprised when visiting Le Swan at their superior quality, service and food. I havent been to Le Swan in a few years (pre-pandemic, I think). I was really happy with my visit at the weekend. Here are my Five Ss: Service: impeccable service, amazing down to every detail including De-cumbing, cutlery changes, napkin changes and very attentive. Fantastic cocktails, too. Staff: An amazing team. They will welcome you with open arms and are really knowledgeable and experts in their areas. Seasoning/Spices: Perfectly seasoned. Really lovely food. Space/Style: Diner style space, but has style and Parisien(ne) vibes in a relaxed setting. The booths are nice and private and you can spend quality time with your other dinner guest(s) without battling talking over other patrons or the music. The bar seating looks nice, too, and gives you a good chance to see cocktails being made & to ask questions about them. Size & Spend: Id definitely recommend sharing food. The green beans were amazing, as well as the Bread and Butter (basic, but its comforting knowing they even care about small things like that). The main dishes we had were excellent, including the fish and the steak tartare. Just fantastic! The portion sizes are fantastic. Bonus: Potato salad. Wow. Just incredible.
evokes superlatives only
This is a cute diner with a French twist. The staff are knowledgeable and the menue included classic diner comfort foods plus Gallic additions including steak tartare, steak frites and cheese fondue (tasty-although a bit skimpy on the quantity) among others. Nice choice of wines by the glass or bouteille. Eclectic clientele makes for good people watching. Worth a return visit to sample other menu items.
This super cool old school French diner in Ossington serves up classics like steak frites and beef tartare as well as some vummy cocktails. Check them out! I Steak Tartare, French Onion Soup, Onion Rings, Oysters, Salad Nicoise, Steak Frites, Chocolate Terrine, Bananas Foster.
It was my second time at Le Swan and I love the place. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff is so friendly and nice. I really like their cocktail menu. From the food menu we ordered Steak Tartare (definitely recommend it), corn dogs, onion rings, jambon & raclette on baguette and as dessert, chocolate terrine. Everything we ordered was perfect for sharing. Food was delicious and I enjoyed my time there.
Expectations were fully met. Awesome service, atmo was cozy and comforting and food was out of this world. Ordered a handful of sides and an entree to spilt with a friend. Great place for a friend date or a date date. I dream of the green beans every day. Best ever. Food
We had a great time here. Server was super and the vibe was amazing. Good selection of wines. Food was ok. Interesting takes on pretty normal dishes. Was quite expensive, but not the best food on the street. I would go back for the atmosphere - probably try different dishes. Overall, really enjoyed it.
Quite a fantastic casual yet elegant spot. The food is great and a very simple menu makes it easy to order. The service, drinks and mood is also great here. Will definitely come back!
Great music, nice lighting, delicious food. Love the banana foster dessert.
Great discovery. Just a step up from hole-in-the-wall, which was big part of the charm. And service was a bit slow (theyre French after all ). But the food, just amazing. They could double their proces and it would still be a great deal. Definitely return next time Im in Toronto!
Very good
Le Swan has been one of my favourite restaurants in Toronto for a long time now. I love the unique concept of an upscale French diner and I love the unusual menu -- the food is consistently delish. The cocktails, wine and vibe are simply top notch. Hey man, if you know, you know! :)
Great customer service good food
Based on nothing more than a quick reservation from walking past we hurried to Le Swan on a Thursday, hungry and tired. From walking in and reading the menu we immediately knew we were in the right place. Immediately revived from just reading the half diner half French restaurant menu we were excited to tackle what it held. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was definitely lively. Perfect for settling in and appreciating the food. We had the Salad Nicoise, a lovely light touch that set up the meal leading into the Steak Tatare, an amazing plate of food with a golden yolk surrounded by a bed of chives. Getting the patty melt was the way to balance out this luxury, alongside the smoked trout rillette. Both super refined and tasty dishes. We have been craving a patty melt ever since. The corn dogs were just the best bite and we couldn t leave the table without the fish sticks, super fun and moreish. All finished off by the bananas foster We already miss Le Swan, but hopefully it won t be the last time we visit.
Unpretentious French. Food and wine list makes pairing and sharing easy. Great service, didn t feel rushed even with a late reservation and the food was paced excellently. Everything we had was delicious but the tuna melt is a thing of beauty, get it.
Wanted to visit this place for a while and finally made it. Great atmosphere, amazing service and decent food. Was worth a visit.
This cozy establishment is well worth the wait if you didnt reserve a table. Their cocktail selection is eclectic yet oh so good. Spicy watermelon margarita? Yes! The Steak Frites is their most popular dish, and once you have a bite of the oh so tender steak, that just melted in your mouth, youll understand why. Their Porkchops and Applesauce is amazing in its own right and will not disappoint. Youll be hard pressed to choose your favourite between the two. We finished our evening with the two equally enjoyable desserts. Ive never had Bananas Foster that reminded me of the bliss of a creme brûlée. The decadent Chocolate Terrine was heavenly and silky smooth. I almost lost my composure and licked the plate. Thank you so much for sharing your passion for excellent food with us!
Small niche little spot for a good byte.
Stopped in for a drink and was not disappointed! What a cute spot off Queen, a true hidden gem with a lovely selection of antique glass wear too! Would come again.
Great food, great service. A must eat if in the mood for French cuisine.
The chocolate milkshake was amazing. Very beautiful and warm ambiance
Top tier, great food, great cocktails and excellent staff. Should book in advance for a table as it can get busy. Almost hesitate to post this review as its a hidden gem lol
Nostalgia abounds! Lovely, cozy spot for an intimate dinner.
Such a fun menu! Loved the tartare and the trout rillette. Flawless service.
A sleeper of a joint. Went in for a drink as it was recommended to me by Jacob Martin, who knows his stuff. The decor is simple, causal dinner and the food looks good, nothing over the top, but just simple french diner food. Will definitely come back for food, but the drinks are solid, better than a lot of so called bars. David Greig put together a solid cocktail menu that from what Ive learned, changes with the season. Would recommend to anyone in the area that wants some good food, and good drinks... A solid place to start a night out.
What a gem! I love this place, for the food, for its staff and the decor.
Beautiful place and great ambiance with friendly staff. Beef tartare was very nice and the corn dogs were delicious. Steak had a bit of a chew and a slight gamey flavor, but was overall very enjoyable and cooked perfectly. Their french fries may have been my favorite dish. Will definitely be back for another date night
My friend has seen this restaurant passing by Trinity bellwoods and wanted to give it a try. It was great! We were seated a the patio and had the waitress give us her recommendations. I really enjoyed the salad niçoise and the steak tartare the most!! When it gets colder , I ll be sure to get a seat indoors!
Everything was awful Very bad taste Small and expensive The worst restaurant that I saw Food : 1/5 |
Always a fav of mine in the city.
Service was horrible & food was average. Not worth the hype
I went here to celebrate my anniversary with my husband. I had a serious craving for steak frites and based on the reviews, this was the place to get it. I was hugely disappointed. The beef was extremely salty and the fries were soggy and oily. It was not very pleasant to eat. I was surprised based on how much everyone praises this dish. We also ordered the fried chicken, tuna melt and oysters and enjoyed each.
Best restaurant in the area!
Diners done delightfully! Le Swan is a hidden gem on one of Toronto s busiest streets, with a fabulously intimate and warm atmosphere inside a diner that had everything you d hope for, and more. Wonderful service complemented great food and wine, at an affordable price point. Recommended to friends and can t wait to return!
Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible. Food
This was the first place I came to when visiting Toronto and I barely wanted to leave. Such a quaint and lovely place. The steak frites were amazing and they even gave me a little treat for my birthday. Our server was a doll, absolute sweetheart. Whenever I get to return to Toronto this will be one of the first places I go back to!
We were in the Ossington/Queen area and decided to try out this place since it has high ratings. The inside is very casual but a great set up. The menu is kept small and therefore all items on the menu are worth ordering. We decided to order the quarter rotisserie chicken as well as the steak frites. Steak was medium rare and they executed that well while the fries were good. The chicken was as most rotisserie chicken dry on the inside but they did have great gravy to pair it with. I liked the food but it wasnt anything super special. The dessert looked interesting so may want to try that if I come back.
Extraordinary food. Cocktails were not our cup of tea. First, the food. The tartare is obviously a must have, among the best in the city. Steak frites also, obviously extraordinary. The jambon and raclette baguette is an incredible combination of flavours. The patty melt is seemingly so simple, and yet was so tender and...melty. the corns dogs are a great side. The cocktails were a little disappointing; the ocean Mary, while a great idea on paper, is very spicy and salty. The swan 75 was less than stellar. Service was extraordinary. Highly recommend for the food and service, less so for drinks.
An incredible meal and cozy atmosphere. We had the smoked trout, steak tartare, green beans, corn dog and steak tartare. All dishes were fantastic. The fries were maybe the best we ve ever had and steak perfectly cooked and seasoned. Service from our waitress, Allie, couldn t not have been topped.
Went to Le Swan a couple weeks back for a birthday. The place is pleasant, inviting and warm but it was super loud at times due to a rowdy group seated nearby which was distracting. The service itself was great - attentive and consistent. We loved the French comfort food. My favourite was the chicken dish & the ham & racellete baguette. Will definitely visit again in the future!
Best French food in the city
Steak Frites were good. The size of the steak was small but logical for the price point. It was very juicy but a little too juicy. The fries were good. The green beans were good. The fondue was good too, but the heat of the cheese died and was getting dry, and the proportions of bread, broccoli and cheese weren t calibrated as we were left with surplus of bread and lacked broccoli. The salad we liked very much! The drinks were great as well. What was most disappointing was the time interval between each dish. There was a SIGNIFICANT amount of time just twiddling our thumbs from cocktails, to salad, to fondue, to steak frites And there wasn t a lot of customers at the time of our visit.
Not meant for vegetarians
Edit: been back since over the years and less impressed. The steak frites as a dish has been hit by shrinkflation - its a few slices now, the steak frites for two used to be a really nice meal. Never fail steak frites. Sole meunière is really well done. Great comfort french food. Small menu but everything is always delicious.
The chicken platter is delightful.
Food was good, but nothing so memorable. Onion rings were way too greasy for our taste.
cute little french bistro with great vibe
An overall underwhelming experience. The beef tartare was very chewy and salty; the beef bourguignon was lacking in taste and was quite bland; the steak frites came out with the steak being very chewy and barely warm - the butter on top would not melt. Onion soup was amazing though and the wine was good too:) Did not cause a scene or ask for anything to be remade as the mood of the night was ruined and we did not want to spend extra time at the establishment. Le Swan did not live up to my expectations for the price point, unfortunately.
Wanted to go there for a while but got genually disappointed as everything was not only up to expectations but below average to be honest. Blood red rose cocktail was unbalanced and way more on the bitter side than it was supposed to be as my assumption is it is supposed to be Mezcal based drink and not amaro. Very weird choice of garnish for the drink as well. 3/10 Steak tartare was just ok, absolutely nothing special about presentation or taste whatsoever. Meat could ve and should ve been softer than it was. 4.5/10 Onion soup was lacking onion (make it make sense) and cheese, so it was just decent. 4.5/10 Beef bourguignon was my biggest anticipation and eventually is what completely destroyed the dining experience and threw me off. Both mashed potatoes and gravy were very good but the meat itself was missing flavour and I got an impression it wasn t even seasoned enough. Not to mention the portion was tiny. Surprisingly, the worst beef bourguinon I ve ever tried. 1/10 Steak and fries was the only dish that was decent, but I found it weird that the server didn t ask us about how we would like the steak to be done, so I assume they generally cook it to medium rare level which is exactly how we wanted it. However, it was a bit chewy and took some effort to cut it into smaller pieces. The dipping sauce for the fries was just generic mayo, no added garlic or seasonings. 5/10 Overall, very mediocre experience for its price, 200$ down the drain.
Amazing. We had an amazing dinner on our first night in Toronto, we gulped the Canadian red. Food : 5/5
Enjoyed coming here tonight! The place has a elevated diner vibe and serves many diner classics with a bit of a French and modern twist. I would say certain items stood out more than others, but I highly recommend the onion rings, steak frites (or even just the fries if they offer that), and the banana foster. The fries were hands down our favourite part of the entire meal! The portions here are also on the smaller side, but overall it was a good experience!
Cute french diner with delicious food and great service. They do french classics very well. Steak tartare, green beans, and roast chicken are very good. Chicken was very juicy and cooked well.
Loved it here! The menu was so unique and such good value. Interesting cocktails and a killer wine list as well. The corn dogs are a must!
What a great little cozy restaurant. The service and food were amazing. You got to try their tuna melt and you have to try it with their tabasco sauce... My mouth drools just thinking about it.
Really cute diner that is unassuming from its storefront. Food is traditional diner food with a French twist. Had a great time!
Excellent dinner food / French staples mashup. Service is amazing, with very cool atmosphere. Great cocktails as well. This is based of my second visit
Steak was chewy and drenched in a peppercorn gravy rather than the bone marrow compound butter. Server failed to tell us anything about the menu so we had to send it back. Fries, steak and French onion soup were all very salty. Very small place and felt tight. Malt chocolate shake was served three quarters full, shame considering it was really good. Wouldnt return unfortunately!
Fantastic! It was overall a great experience, I personally liked the space because it gave us time to really indulge and take our time with eating. I would say that we did ask for medium and it was more along the side of medium rare - rare, however the steak, fries and beans were all very flavourful. The atmosphere is great and makes you feel like you re not in Toronto, I would definitely recommend visiting!
The cocktails here are always tasty and well balanced so I d definitely recommend getting one here. The food portions are quite small, however the flavours were great. Would recommend trying the tuna melt! The vibe and decor is cute, a spot I d visit again.
Came here on a Monday late night and we were satisfied with our experience! I d heard really good things from TikTok, and I can see why - the ambience is lovely, dim and romantic but also great for friends to hang out. The service was good considering we were there 15 mins before last call, because my parents were flying into Toronto on a layover so we had little options for where to go. Food was what you d probably expect for a casual/slightly upscale French restaurant with a reputation for great food. It all felt very homey, but with quality. Can t complain! Here s what we had: CORN DOGS were yummy - this is a popular dish here STEAK TARTARE always a favourite dish of mine, this one is good but could use some mustard to elevate the taste. STEAK FRITES simple, and the steak is cooked very well GREEN BEANS had a delicious flavour, would recommend! 1/4 ROTISSERIE CHICKEN I don t remember much, I think it was fine but could have been a bit juicier
