Follow @bredgyeats for more food pictures! I wasn't disappointed with my first omakase in Toronto and its relaxed atmosphere and excellent value. They know how to handle their rice and fish, serving up the freshest seafood I've never even heard of, from the subtle sweetness of the white fish to the indulgent creaminess of the otoro. The rice is seasoned for a subtle sweet vinegar taste that balances and complements the fish, and the meal is finished with an aromatic taro ice cream that's as smooth as silk.

I recently visited Shunoko and it was such a lovely experience. The service was exceptional and the food was fresh and delicious. It's always a pleasure to go there, and it never fails to put me in a happy mood. I have been coming to this restaurant since they started at St. Clair Ave. and now relocated to Yonge St.

At $100, it is one of the best value omakase in Toronto! This can be my new bi monthly sushi restaurant. Like most other Omakase in the GTA, I have to ordered a few extra nigiri at a reasonable price to fill me up. Try and reserve at the sushi bar since you will enjoy a better experience.

I was in search of a budget friendly omakase around town. This was the first place that was recommended by Google as well as my peers, thus I gave it a try. For $100 dollars, it blew me away. The fish were good quality and I had nothing to be mad about. There was even a toro piece which is my personal favourite. They didn’t have any uni pieces when I went. Interior was great and I had no complaints about the service. I would give this restaurant a 8.5/10!

Casual dining experience with exceptional food and service. Watching the sushi chef in his element, as he crafted each nigiri, was very special. He was meticulous in his work and observant of his guests’ needs. Can’t wait to go back.

Small clean restaurant, 10 seats at chef’s counter with extra seating around the shop. $100 omakase for 17 courses was great value. Really enjoyed most of the courses, especially the sashimi platter and otoro nigiri. The veggie handroll was bland and unimpressive, could be improved with added fish or protein.

One of the best value Omakase offerings in the city. Interesting, a few uncommon and fresh ingredients from Japanese and European waters were used for the Sushi Neta. Very friendly and informative sushi chef and lady server. The 'all fish' routine, with very similar dressing, tends to become a bit monotonous after the first 6-7 pieces. The use of other forms of seafood.....shellfish, crustaceans...etc to break up the routine should add more enjoyment. The use of truffle oil in a few toppings tends to be ' hot or miss '.....for me, the pungent aroma was a bit too overwhelming! Wines chosen for the pairing was interesting but not totally compatible. IMO, Sake is a better pairing choice!

First ever omakase experience and it did not disappoint. Favourite part was most definitely the sushi round which served individual pieces at a time to patrons. Each sushi was unique to its own with specific ingredients procured from different regions of the world. Time passed by too quickly as I could’ve eaten more. Given the process of serving food, dining etiquette was at first confusing for a first time noob like myself but I quickly adapted to the experienced patrons near me. The staff here is also exceptionally kind as my wife mentioned it was my birthday and the chef presented me an extra piece of sushi with a candle. Turns out you can also let them know ahead of time and they’ll generously prepare a piece of birthday cake. All in all it was a great experience and a definite recommendation for sushi lovers and foodies alike.

Fantastic omakase experience, the chef was sociable, friendly, and had amazing stories of his travels to Portugal sourcing local fish, olive oil, wines etc. The fish was sublime, some were imported from Portugal too. Recommend opting into the wine pairing option as the chef had personally selected them for the nigiri portion of the dinner. By far one of the best omakase experiences, will be a returning customer.

Not the best service here.. at least not as an Omakase Restaurant. The food is not the best but nice quality. Overall it seems like they don t care about your business. After we paid with the machine, they didn t come grab the machine back nor said anything to us or have any eye contact with us - even though the session for that time was finished. We stood there for a few minutes and still nothing, so we just walked out ourselves. FYI, tips % starts from 18% and higher, which also doesn t make sense as it was already priced at $100+ per person BECAUSE it is Omakase. No interaction from the chef either.

The prices were very reasonable for the quality. During our visit, our daughter accidentally broke a wine glass. The staff quickly made sure everything was safe and clean, so we didnt have to worry. This was my first omakase and definitely one to remember. I really loved trying all the different fishes that I d normally wouldn t go for. They started on time so make sure you re there early or it might take a while as it was taking quite a while for them to bring items to the table side. There was definitely a lot sushi so in my opinion it is a great bang for your buck. It was a really small intimate spot so it felt quite cozy . My favourites were the otoro and the taro ice cream I would ve came back just for the ice cream if they sold it separately!!

Shunoko is the next best thing for omakase in Toronto. I hate to say it but Shunoko can raise their price from $100 to $130 a head and they will still see me eagerly making reservations for their incredible omakase; for now, $100 for what they offer is simply a steal. Shunoko offers simple quality ingredients and expertly crafted nigiri. We start with a sample of sashimi, each one offering unique flavours that highlight the quality of the individual fish. Then a tuna tartare with puffed rice served on nori. After these appetizers comes 12 nigiri, most notable pieces are the kanpachi, botan ebi and the otoro, but honestly each piece shined in its own way. Finishing the meal off we have a small veggie handroll and a fish miso broth, ending with a taro ice cream that really emphasizes the taro. We also got a bonus kanpachi at the end and an unagi for the birthday folks. Wine pairing was also available for a measly $34 dollars for a tall pour of riesling to start, and a smaller pour of 3 other distinct white wines. The wine tasting (not pictured) was not bad but I would probably enjoy a sake pairing instead. As per any omakase, the bar seat is the best way to experience the restaurant ambiance and the chefs work. Make a reservation and you wont be disappointed.

My wife and I had dinner at Shunoko to celebrate our first anniversary and it was a truly memorable experience. Our waiter and the chefs made us feel welcome as soon as we entered and despite the strong recommendation to be seated at the sushi bar, we chose a table for the omakase for a more intimate celebration and they were happy to accommodate. The omakase experience was absolutely incredible. Each course was given an introduction to ensure we were familiar with what we were about to enjoy, and the quality of the fish and ingredients was top notch. Some pieces melted in our mouths, with the chefs allowing the natural flavor of the fish to shine through, while others had an accompaniment (garlic, or truffle for example) that allowed us to enjoy an explosion of flavor, but balanced in such a way that doesnt mask the fish. The chefs carefully planned the experience and orchestrated the ordering of course like a masterful conductor guiding a symphony of flavors. On top of the fantastic meal I couldnt possibly say anything better about, the chefs and waiter were thoughtful enough to treat us to an extra course of BBQ eel that came with a candle as a celebration of our anniversary and it was truly appreciated. It started to get a bit busy prior to us finishing dinner, so we quickly departed after finishing our meal and I regret not taking a moment to show my appreciation for the experience the chefs and our waiter have clearly put a lot of thought and passion into, so if you see this, my wife and I couldnt thank you enough for the amazing meal, thank you!

It was my second time Omakase with my husband. I found four fishbones from one piece of sushi. We ve tried few omakase places in Toronto but never experienced fishbones. I was very disappointed by the owner s attitude. There was no apology, he didn t even come to our table. The server just brought us a free sashimi plate. I was so satisfied with the first omakase that I returned with my husband. While eating, I was very surprised to see four thorns coming out of one piece of sushi. It looks small in the picture, but it was a very thick thorn and it pierced my gums, causing it to bleed. It could be really dangerous if a child swallowed it. When I told the server, there was no apology and he didnt seem surprised. After a while, he brought me a free sashimi plate, saying it was the chefs service. I had already lost my appetite, so I gave in to my husband, and what we wanted was not a free service, but an apology. I paid $300, including tip, and the chef didnt even look at me until then, which was very disappointing.

This is the evolution of Sushi Nomi. The original spot was a super small take out counter at the base of Roncesvalles. It had its following and a constant flow of people purchasing their platters and maki sets. It was one of the rare places where you can find interesting fish beyond the typical tuna, salmon, and red snapper AND it didnt cost you a fortune. This new spot on St.Clair is quite a bit bigger than the previous spot. It has at least 10 tables of varying sizes in addition to the sushi bar in front of the chef. It is quite spacious and if they really wanted to, they could squeeze in a few more tables. Thankfully they didnt and they let the minimalist zen like decor also be held in the atmosphere. Soft jazz plays in the background which just adds to a nice soothing night. I highly recommend doing reservations. When I was there, it was a constant line up of walk ins hoping for a table. As for the service, we lucked out and it was very good. There was the primary hostess who also did triple duty as main waitress and food runner. SHE WAS BUSY but she also super sweet, thoughtful, and attentive. She either cleaning, speaking to different tables, or checking in on those who already received their dishes. There were a few others helping but no one was the star player like her. Their menu is easy to read but definitely ask for the daily specials. They regularly have fish flown in from Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. Sometimes theyll have a lot of varieties and theyre so unique to 95% of what Toronto sushi spots offer. Sashimi B set - For only $35, this sashimi set has 24 pieces of 12 different fish. That is so rare in Toronto. Usually theyll only say 7 types of fish ... 8 if youre lucky. So when this platter arrived on the table, it was beautiful. Not only were the slices clean and well portioned, the colours and different sauces they added to the fish were just a great touch. We were also blessed to see we got 30 pieces of 15 different fish! This was just unexpected and we were very grateful to try even more. Of the 15, only 5 were common (salmon sake, tuna maguro, fluke hirame, black sea bream kurodai, and yellowtail hamachi). We also got sea bass, spanish mackerel, horse mackerel, red sea bream, striped jack, amber jack ... and others I cant even remember. Many of the fishes were really good. Some were supple and smooth... others were meaty and had a rich bold flavour. There was only one was just a bit unusual for me. I never knew a fish could be crunchy. Not my favourite but appreciated that I got to try it. I loved this set especially for the price point. Just well done overall. 4.5/5 Coconut Spicy tuna roll - This was a fun and interesting roll. If you love textures, this one youd might like a lot. It has finely minced tuna in a mild spicy sauce with avocado. Then it is finely rolled up altogether and then covered in crispy popped rice and roasted coconut flakes. The added crisp and crunchy pieces kept it interesting. Flavour wise, I liked how their spicy tuna wasnt mayo filled but the roasted coconut was distractedly sweet. Im not sure the added sweetness worked for me. 3.5/5 Afterflood roll - This is a solid choice for anyone who likes maki rolls. Filled with asparagus, cucumber, creamy avocado, and spicy crab, its then topped with 7 types of fish and avocado. It is a pretty looking roll with lots of colour and the addition of the green onion. Its not as spicy as the spicy tuna filling... just a hint of spice. I think this worked well overall. 4/5

Heard of this spot on BlogTo and being a huge sushi lover myself decided to pay it a visit. I went on a sunday with no reservation and was able to get a table in about 10-15 minutes. The place inside was very nice and lucky for me we were able to get a table at the sushi bar. We ordered the Sushi Saiko set with 9 piece sushi and spicy tuna roll. The selection of fish was super fresh, garnished very nicely and I dont remember the name, but the last piece of sushi in my picture was very unique and and probably one of the best sushi pieces I have had outside of sea water eel and toro. The spicy tuna had lettuce in the roll which was not expected but still was good to finish off the set with., One thing preventing the place from getting a 5 star review was the service, the chef was super friendly, but the servers seemed to move very slowly and were not customer centric. They served us our miso soup and salad without having utensils set up on the table. Overall, great sushi spot and for the price it was definitely worth it given the freshness and quality of sushi you are getting, would definitely got back.

this owner use to owned sushi nomi before opening this restaurant, i use to go there alot, becuase the quality and the taste of the sushi and sashimi was top of the class, and also they made right away for their tamago, and even the owner knows who i am. i am writing this bad review because after he opened his new shop call shunoko, everything was horrible. especailly there sushi saiko! they had good flavor and freshness and it was such a good food, however, there sushi got smaller and the quality was horrible, i could smell rotten fish inside my mouth. there shrimp tempura was so tiny and its actually different visual than other place. The tamago i ordered was so cold! they use to make right away for you. so it was fresh and make me think to comeback again. i asked the waitress about the tamgao, is it suppose to be this cold? i told her about i came here because of this food. She talked to the owner and camback saying as a new restaurant, we dont serve fresh tamago no more. and eventhough the owners knows me, he didnt bother look and me.THE OWNER BECAME SO GRUDGE WITH THE MONEY, HE NOW DOESNT THINK ABOUT THE TASE, QUALITY AND THE SERVICES! I WOULD NEVER GOING TO THAT PLACE! THERE OTORO WAS $12 A PIECE AND TASTE AWFUL AND I THOUGHT I WAS CHEWING GUM BECUSE THERE WAS SO MANY TENDONS . PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE! Ordered: Miso, Edamame, Spidey Roll, Sashimi, Steamed Rice, Kappa and Dynamite Roll. The Spidey Roll is remarkable and a great option for sushi-lovers as well as those who are unsure or trying it out for the 1st time. Sashimi is stellar. Some have a subtle fine citrus, others have a perfect hint of smokiness. It is not fishy in aroma or flavour. The texture is clean and smooth. The vibe of the space is fitting for a nice date. My only feedback is that the combination of the floor and table legs is terrible. The slightest lean on the table sends it rapidly sliding forward, requiring one to constantly pull the table back into place... or anchor the table in place with one foot. Other than that... Shunoko is as close as I can get to tantalizing sushi gratification in Toronto. First time in 5 years I have found sushi that rivals my Vancouver-sushi experiences.

This is one of the few Japanese sushi restaurant that has real wasabi from the wasabi plant. Actually, first we came across in Toronto! We ordered Cant go wrong roll--which was delish--sashimi set that had very fresh smooth and tasty sashimi, avocado roll with fresh avocado, and otoro. Everything tasted good and service was excellent! Definitely not the cheapest place but you get what you pay for: good service and great sushi! (We went with our kids and there were few other tables with young ones...tho we want to try going by ourselves next time.)

Excellent. I ordered Inari, ume shiso, unavo ans octopus sashimi. Inari was sweet and delicious. Ume shiso was the perfect summer flavor with sourness from the plum and nuttyness from shiso. Unavo was flavourful and delicate. Lastly, the octopus was tender and soft. I can never go back to eating waxy octopus sashimi.

A minimalist setting with clean, fresh architectural lines. It only recently opened, and when you walk in you can still smell the new wood, but it quickly recedes into the background. The service (read server) was demure, attentive and efficient. The food was definitely above average, and the ingredients were very fresh. For other parents, my preteen really enjoyed it, and well definitely go back to explore more items on the menu.

Outstanding sushi place. Mostly set up for take out, but there are a few seats for eating in. Real cozy. I had the sushi sekai set. This is really good sushi. This is the kind of place where the chef has applied the correct amount of wasabi to your nigiri and brushed it with the perfect amount of shoyu, then topped with a few flower petals, or a piece of shiso leaf, or a few tiny slivers of red onion. The kind of place where they care about the balance of flavour in every bite. Fresh fish from Tsukiji is sometimes available too. Friendly casual vibe, really good execution. Its a good time.

Incredible sushi spot. Fish is extremely fresh, service is great and the value is incredible. Highly recommend the Tuna Tataki starter and the Sushi Saiko - 9 pieces of different Nigiri along with a spicy tuna roll. The iceberg lettuce in the roll is a different but welcome change from the typical avocado. Comes together perfectly. I generally avoid eating Mackerel given it can be a bit overwhelming, but the mackerel here was some of the best Ive ever had. Kanpachi, Tuna, Seabream were also amazing... The Butter on fire roll was excellent but they are a bit heavy handed with the garlic/butter sauce that goes on top, IMO. If you have a group, this is a great roll to get, but I wouldnt want more than a couple pieces given how rich it is. You arent going to get Yasu level quality, but you also are paying waaaaaaay less. Shunoko is the best bang-for-the-buck sushi spot in Toronto hands down.

I came here with a few friends on a Wednesday night. It is a cute small cozy place. The food was not bad. The price was fair for the quality that you get. However, I rate this restaurants 3 stars only because of the poorly run operation. We waited nearly 40 minutes for our food even when the restaurant was not very busy. We had a brand new server who didnt seem well trained. Our orders got all mixed up, more than once. In fact, the chef had given me the the wrong item 3 times in one night. Our server was very apologetic with all the mishaps, but I expect more from a restaurant. Although food was good, I would not come back due to the headaches.

The beautiful taste of simplicity To take that which is simple, basic, pure and to bring out it s most subtle yet profound flavors is a difficult task. As ironic as it sounds, simplicity is truly a difficult element to tame, nevertheless, it is an element which this chef has mastered. To take something as simple as rice, and bring it to its height of flavor. To take an ordinary fish and reveal the panorama of aromas and savors that lay inside. And to then make all these elements dance on the tip of your tongue. From something as basic as the soy sauce even to the most delicate fish each and every ingredient chosen with care, and, more importantly, with purpose. I highly highly recommend this place.
