890 Don Mills Rd. Unit 138-140, Toronto, ON M3C 1V6, Canada
Japanese Takeout: Sushi, donburi, drinks and sweets.
I'd rate food as 1 star but put 3 here so that my comment cannot be deleted. I got the premium don and this roll for $45 after cash discount. The rice is so cold and hard, apparently rice is stored in the fridge and not reheated. It just tastes like sushi from supermarket, but with premium price. The sashimi just tastes like regular quality and not that fresh. The roll focuses more on cost-saving instead of offering the variety of ingredients that it should provide - it's mostly rice and vege, you can hardly tastes the fish. If these are $25, I'd give 4 star, but at $45, you can get much better sushi from other places....Anyone that rates this place above 4 star might have only tried sushi at supermarkets. I hope the owner can take this review seriously and re-think about your strategy. The chef should continue to work on cooking skills. Otherwise this type of restaurant won't last long.
This cozy Japanese take out shop offers a variety of donburi, sushi, drinks and desserts. Located in the C&C Supermarket Plaza at 888 Don Mills Quality and portion sizes are good at a reasonable price. As mentioned not a whole lot of seating but that's OK given it's a take out place lol
🍵 Ms. Kyoto $9.95 🍦 Croffles and Crème $9.95 - Kitaya is inside the C&C supermarket building - They accept cash and card - It took about 10-15 min for the ice cream - There are seats to enjoy your food
Food: 3 Stars Service: 3 Stars Ambience: 3 Stars Value: 3 Stars Overall: 3 Stars Toronto is home to a plethora of sushi restaurants, making the competition quite fierce. I visited Kitaya, hoping it would offer a standout experience. Unfortunately, my visit was somewhat underwhelming. The torch pressed sushi was decent but not exceptional. While it was fresh, it lacked the wow factor that I’ve experienced at other sushi spots in the city. For the same price point, there are places where the quality and flavours are noticeably superior. I was particularly looking forward to the green matcha soft serve, but it turned out to be rather average. The texture and taste did not meet my expectations, as I’ve had much better matcha desserts elsewhere. Service was another area that left room for improvement. Despite the staff being polite, the service was quite slow. It took a considerable amount of time to get our orders, which affected the overall dining experience. Speedier service would have made the meal much more enjoyable. I visited Kitaya for a casual lunch, expecting a delightful sushi experience based on its reputation. The food and service did not quite meet the expectations set by other top-notch sushi establishments in Toronto. In summary, Kitaya is an okay choice if you’re in the area, but there are many other sushi restaurants in Toronto that offer better value for the same price. I hope they can make some improvements to enhance the dining experience for future customers. kellychan360
With so many sushi restaurants in Toronto, the competition is fierce. This place is alright. Nothing sets it out. For the same price, we can get better. Just a little hick were the salmon roe, I'm not sure what it is, but it stuck to my teeth like gelatin which they don't do. So, I'm not sure.
I came in here to shop at the grocery and stopped for dinner. Phenomenal Japanese beef Curry on rice. So good I decided to post this review right in the middle of eating. She says that the beef unagi Don though is a 3.5
Been here more than 10 times already and been trying almoat everything in their menu. This Japanese restaurant is a must try as they have a lot to offer from appetizer to dessert. But what I love the most are their rice bowls. The serving is generous. The place is also a good spot to try desserts specially ice cream. Snacks or side dish that I would recommend are takoyaki and karaage. For rice bowls it's the Gyu don and Katdu don. Rice rolls everything's delicoius.
Visited to try the infamous soft serve with unique asian flavors - Kurogoma (Black Sesame), Kinako (Roasted Soybean Flour), Houjicha, Matcha, and Pure Milk! ..but sadly Kurogoma and Kinako (the flavors I wanted) aren’t available until Winter 🥲 Got Mochi Azuki with Houjicha flavor instead. Not too impressed with the representation, but the quality of the ice cream was great; very thick, strong in taste! I guess I will have to come again in Winter!
Got the cricket which is definitely worth for the price since they make it fresh. Sashimi was also good because it was nice and thick. Purchased around 1:30pm.
Havent had such horrible sushi in a while. Too much rice in the oshi sushi and everything was bland.
matcha soft serve was just okay - not a super strong matcha taste and very milky. hojicha soft serve was really not good too.
This is always my favourite place for salmon poke
Goood combination! Will definitely try the sushi next time
Very, very good desert, the best Asian desert I ve had in a long time. Only thing that could make it better is if the ice cream were a more intense flavour.
Desserts are ok not that wow for the price, same as the customer service (male/female) probably owners, are no greetings at all, I thought Japanese culture is all about customer service?
Its a takeout store. Sushi is very fresh and the dessert are delicious . Highly recommend!
Says opens at 12 noon, 12:03 just arrives and need 5 more min for them to change clothes. because I was in a rush, just ordered poke salmon and unbelievably it took 25 min to get the poke ready. Not sure how long will get other food ready. Maybe I expected wrong from a Japanese food place. Poke was so so ...not that different than other places.
Paid $16 plus tax for poke bowl. Literally got a bowl of rice with a few beans and some seaweed. What a rip off! Don t waste your money. The sushi competition is so high in Toronto. There s sooo many better options out there.
Maybe its delicious. But they werent open when they said they would be. =\ maybe next time.
Ice-cream is really yummy. I will try hot food next time.
There are many places that the food was just average, but I would go back because of the service was good. This place is definitely not one of those. I had matcha and hojicha twist with my azuki mochi but the matcha was just not strong enough. Hojicha was also just meh. What bothered me most is the attitude from the male server who, in my opinion, one of the worst I have seen. An old lady who was ordering before me was having difficulty reading the menu yet instead of helping her out, he just kept telling her that he doesn t get it. This is one of the very few places that offers hojicha soft serve so I was really let down by the quality. Not somewhere I would revisit.
Definitely a hidden gem. Despite being a small shop, the quality is better than many Japanese restaurants in the city. Their don has good portion, and the flavors are wonderful. Will definitely come back to try out their whole menu!
Cute Japanese store with lots of options!
The milk soft serve here tastes like rich milk from a farm and is the most delicious Japanese-style ice cream in Toronto. The matcha soft serve was also very delicious and not too sweet. The J-pop music being played in the store is modern and very Japanese-like.
Delicious food. When I find myself around this area agaun, Ill stop by. Had the Hayashi rice and one of the dons. Really tasty, Japanese food.
Amazing drinks!
Cute shop, love their matcha dalgona candy drink. I was afraid the candy wouldnt melt but it does! And soo Good
I ordered the ikura salmon don, which was $22. Maybe I have high expectations, but I guess I was expecting a little more than just 4 pieces of salmon sliced on a huge bed of rice, with packet soy sauce in a 6 inch bowl. The rice was light and fluffy which was nice. I feel for this price point, I you can get dons with better value at other places. Also the menu on google is not correct, so be warned. Please check the website or the signage in the store.
This was a nice little shop, I go to for sushi. Just wow, their quality is top notch. I really wasnt expecting it to be this good. Definitely gotta get their tuna specials. If you like better sushi take out definitely you should consider this place!
Come here every time I go to Toronto. Love this place so much! Salmon poke ball is fantastic, so fresh and taste. Also their riffles are must to try. And matcha latte always 10/10. Pure love!!!
Great place for sushi, curry and dessert. Regularly come here for lunch and their specials dont disappoint.
So slowly
Decided to eat here on a whim. And I m so glad I did. One or the best authentic japanese sushi experience (traditiona)I ve had in Toronto. The seafood was so fresh, yet the space was so no frills like any small restaurant shops in Tokyo. Really good, highly recommend, and I hope it stays.
First time is great, second time is ok
Fantastic food! The sashimi here are very fresh. Reasonable price
Dont order the chicken or beef dishes they taste terrible, I think they buy the cheap meat from across the Chinese place. Sushi and deserts are ok.
I loved the soft serve ice cream and they even had an affogatto which was delicious. I forgot to take a picture until I was part way through but that it was delicious! I cant say much about the savory food/sushi but overall the dessert was a great experience!
Japanese takeout place located near the same plaza as Oomomo, it offers a variety of Japanese takeout snacks, desserts and sandwiches. They also offer sushi sets and donburi. They recently had its soft opening and are open for takeout. The Tokyo Cheesecake sundae was good with matcha ice cream but had a bit too much on biscuits. A suggestion would be to crush more of the waffle biscuit topping on the bottom to allow for more ice cream. However it was still good as a dessert overall and would try the other sundaes.
Got the Ms. Kyoto and it was delicious. Sushi looks good, will have to try the next time O am back!
Tried their cold matcha Latte and twist ice cream. Pretty good. It is a take out oriented restaurant
Hojicha soft serve is my new summer refresher
I have yet to find another hojicha soft serve that tops this place. Amazing!
I got the matcha and hojicha swirl in a waffle cone. It was so creamy and the tea flavour wasn t over powering. Would highly recommend you go and try one of their tasty treats
Located inside the plaza. Great service and delicious desserts! The place is more of a takeout spot. Lots of variety to choose desserts from.
We used to love this Japanese takeout place. We supported it many times during the pandemic. Unfortunately, their food quality has deteriorated. We ordered the Kitaya Crunch, there are deep fried crunchie bits inside the roll, but it was obviously cooked with stale dated oil. The roll actually smelled bad. We couldn t eat it and threw it away. I contacted the restaurant with good intentions hoping they won t serve it to other customers. Disappointedly, the owner has chosen to disregard my call. A simple acknowledgement would have been nice. Very disappointed with your poor customer service and lack of care about your food quality.
I like it... its an odd location. But everything else was good
Affordable and freshly made meals and desserts. Match pudding a la mode was really good, and so was the karaage croffle. Tastes like authentic Japanese!
A bit on the pricier side. Ice cream had a nice tea flavor
A small shop inside C&C Supermarket. I forgot to take photos but I was only there to pick up food. I ordered the premium Chirashi Bowl and it was totally worth it. :) super delicious. They also serve drinks and desserts that look amazing! Will get that next time. Parking: a lot of parking space.
Nice Food,Clean Place,Good Serve Highly recommended!! Food
Love the gyudon and the croffles here!! Also tried a hojicha latte last time I visited and it was bussin will definitely come back to try their matcha latte too hehe <3
Nice hojicha float and ice cream. Would not recommend mochi with ice cream as portion is smaller. Matcha soft serve has good amount of tea flavor.
Great place for desserts!
No sesame flavour in summer But the matcha and hojicha flavour tastes great too! Food
Yummy food. We ordered Premium and Deluxe Kitaya Sushi Don, Japanese Curry Beef w/ rice, Cinnamon Sugar Croffles, Hot Candy Latte and Iced Candy Latte. The Sushi Don is gorgeous, the seafood is fresh .Long time haven t had such fresh premium sashimi, Toro, Kajiki, Hamachi, Hotategi are very good. The croffle is soft and fluffy. The Candy Latte is also good. We ordered hot one fist, after the first zip, we immediately order another one in iced. Personally, I like the hot more though the Candy melts but they blend with the drink better and the whole cup of coffee sweet and silky smooth. In iced version, the Candy keep crunchy while drinking the coffee. The coffee is more bitter after all the Candy are eaten but also good.
Loved their Hochija ice cream!
Get the hojicha ice cream!
Ordered Salmon Aburi and the salmon is as thin as a piece of paper. No layers and rice is not seasoned and does not have a kick of wasabi in it. Thats NOT how Aburi is make. This aburi can only fool those never have aburi before. Not recommend at all.
A hidden spot with delicious treats! The ice cream was super rich in flavour and the croffles are pretty cheap!
we love this place for their soft serve desserts!
Fantastic for desserts. Been here more than once and have not been disappointed. What I ve ordered: - cinnamon sugar croffle - Nutella croffle - Osaka style croffle - Tokyo cheesecake with twist - croffles & creams with matcha EVERYTHING was delicious. Only comment is on the Osaka style croffle which is a savoury croffle. Personally did not like it but that s due to its fishy taste ( personally don t like fishy flavours). But the people I was with loved it. The pure milk flavoured ice cream was surprisingly good. Was a bit skeptical but after trying it , I loved it. The matcha had a very good and strong flavour with prefect sweetness. The croffles were warm and flaky and also had just enough sweetness. The environment is quite calm and quiet but the staff allows you to sit and enjoy and converse as much as you want with no interference. I believe the young lady assisting us was named Elaine both days, she was AMAZING. She provided suggestions and managed to answer all of the questions we had. Overall, HIGHLY recommend.
Love their sushi! Very fresh!
Friendly service and a wide variety of menu options. Food was prepared efficiently - only about a 10 minute wait for Gyu Don. It was pretty tasty and a reasonable price. Karrage was crispy and fresh. Looking forward to trying some of the sweet drinks.
The latte + hojicha soft serve is amazing! I just became addicted to this beverage. It contains the exact amount of sweetness, when the coffee mixes with the hojicha is just amazing. The service is fast and polite! Food : 4/5
Great little corner in this plaza, located right across C & C supermarket (Asian groceries; massive variety & fresh produce). Hojicha soft serve: smooth, creamy, good flavour balance, didnt melt too quickly. Croffles were made from very buttery croissants (A+ from me). Sprinkles of dalgona cookies gave the perfect crunch and added some texture. Matcha pocky were a nice addition, but not the main star. Serving size: Quite large. Sharing recommended but not required Vibe: Minimal seating, with high chairs (beware if youre short legged). Clean, good A/C. Calm music, minimalist Japanese aesthetic. Server: Great. Efficient, polite. Details: Blue fin tuna sushi and curry were definitely tempting. On the pricier side. 50 pcs for approx. $130, and curry for $16-18. Cash discount. Unsure if dairy free or gluten free options available.
Super high quality sashimi is served here! Their milk ice cream is pretty amazing too! Would definitely go back to try other menu items.
Best ice cream I have ever had. Highly recommend pure milk. I had 1 in the morning and I came back in the afternoon because I was so crave for it!!!!!!!!
Very nice place & people. Highly recommend hojicha icecream!
Crazy fresh sashimi in an unexpected food store
I cannot believe it took me this long to try this place. So many of the downtown options for sushi and Japanese comfort food has gone downhill. Kitaya is great.
Best Japanese soft serve ice cream place with delicious take out fresh sushis, sashimis, pokes, waffles, and specialty drinks. The staffs are very friendly and the place is well kept, clean, and chic. Its a small place so great for take out and have a small snack. I absolutely loved the kinako flavors ice cream. It is known for kinako here, so great choice to choose. Parking: Lots of parking spot
Nice sushi, wonderful desserts
We tried the Kurogoma (Black Sesame) + Kinako (Roasted Soybean Flour) Soft Serve Ice Cream. Both flavours were quite mild, but overall still very good! We plan on returning to try Kitaya s wide selection of Japanese menu items.
We ordered the pudding a la mode and the yuzu green tea and they were both great! We will go back and try their sushi as they look really fresh.
Located in an indoor plaza conveniently across the grocery store. Can order prior to doing groceries and pick up your dinner right after. Tried the roasted soybean and black sesame soft serve! Loved it! Also tried the premium sushi set. I think theres too much rice in the sushi roll. We also ordered the Kaiden Don. Sashimi is much better than sushi imo. Its still good and price is fair. Will go back to try other items next time.
This is hands down one of the best sushi places that Ive ever eaten at. Kitaya has extremely fresh sushi. Ootoro and seared sushi here are wonderful. Ever time I go to the C&C supermarket I pop by here to grab something. Their Croffles is amazing as well. Be sure to get the brown sugar ones - those are my absolute favourite. Their soft serve ice cream is also amazing. Definitely taste the hojicha, matcha and sesame flavours coming through.
Got the poke bowl which may have been the wrong choice to get here. Nothing outstanding about the ingredients added. The rice to protein ratio was also super odd with significantly more rice than fish. On the other hand I also got the hojicha kinako soft serve twist which was fantastic. Definitely will return but probably more for the dessert than the food.
Rating is based solely on the ice cream options. Truly delicious with many options of things to eat. You can get matcha based ice cream/sundaes to poke to sashimi to croffles. Small spot inside the mall and not much seating. Compared to tsujuri I would say its en par or even slightly better (with flavour and consistency of the product.
Everyone raves about the dessert but their sushi dons are really good! I love that it shows the real authentic sushi like in Japan and none of that sushi pizza or deep fried nonsense. The salmon and hamachi don is what I would recommend!
Ordered a Hamachi Toro Ikura Don and Negitoro roll as a snack. This place has the freshest fish for take out. It is a must try! The Ikura is well marinated. most places dont marinate well or use old Ikura which has a fishy smell and taste but this place has it perfected.
They sell frozen food.
Never had the food there, but their soft serve selection is bomb!
Extremely impressed with the quality and selection. For such a small restaurant/take-out location they really have it all. I ordered the Premium Chirashi and it blew my taste buds. The lady at the cash register was extremely attentive, knowledgable and kind. Happy to have stumbled into this place and will definitely come again!
My fav part of grocery shopping--the dessert! Sesame ice cream for the win. Service is quick. Cant wait to try their sushi and other desserts
The food quality and serving portions are excellent with reasonable pricing! I always look forward to ordering my favourites: oyako don, black sesame soft serve, and the sashimi set (any). Ill never get tired of eating food at this place. Everyone should come and visit their store!
Tried the blueberry croffle, and was good. Think it tasted a bit undercooked, but otherwise worked well. It was definitely hard to cut with the plastic cutlery given though. Ended up just picking it up and eating it with my hands.
First time when I came here, we ordered chirashi and mixed black sesame and kinako soft serve. Second time I decided to come back just for the soft serve but they didnt have black sesame since it was a seasonal flavor. We got roasted greentea which was mundane nothing amazing. Cant wait to come back here again in winter to try again the black sesame sundae!
I love the parfait so much! It was real Japanese parfait I ate at Japan and all the ingredients are delicious. Also the woman staff was very kind.
Cashier handled money and then proceeded to handle food right after. I love their ice cream but after this experience I don t know if I want to come back.
Unassuming little place. But the flavor is huge !!
Great food selection from a little store. Fresh sushi, quality entrees and yummy ice cream!
Tiny fish, gigantic price
I came to this place a couple times for the ice cream and decided to try the sushi. Wow the sushi salmon was so good for the price, it melts in your mouth. The mochi and red bean ice cream is so good as well. I highly suggest the mochi as it is very very soft and high quality. This place takes very good care into their food, definitely recommend.
If it doesn t say Tuesday, it won t open! Its a waste of time! Google map didnt show closed on Tuesday!
SOFT SERVE WAS DELICIOUS, SWIRL WAS DONE BEAUTIFULLY TOO
Fantastic poke, fresh, good portion size and tasty.
Amazing crossant-waffles, and friendly owner! Will come back to try the sushi.
hojicha soft serve absolutely delicious, $6.22 incl tax Parking: easy, always space
Came here cus they had matcha and got the matcha & hojicha twist and loved it. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu
Bought an ice cream in a cone and a hojicha coffee float. Their hojicha ice cream is very good and has an unique tea flavor. Coffee was made from an espresso machine.
The karaage and croffles was delicious Parking: Free parking in a large lot out front
Best Green tea soft serve in the city! Hands down, no question.
Ootoro is good, but the temperature of the Sushi rice balls is not up to standard. You know, temperature is the soul of sushi. Dont destroy your own brand.
Theyve got amazing food! Both their Matcha and Hojicha ice cream are so flavourful and smooth. Love their croffles as well. So flakey and chewy.
Small place hidden inside a small shopping plaza/mall with a grocery store across. Large parking lot. Gyudon and hayashi rice are both great with large portions. Their ice cream parfaits are ok - I recommend plain soft serve instead.
ice cream is good chirase is good also
Good take out experience. I was able to use website online order, however note that its literally an ordering system, you dont pay until you go and pick up. Also note that when you put in the order, youll need to wait for the confirmation email and THEN its around the time they quote you (which initially it said 20 mins on the website). I still had to wait 5 mins when I got there at the quoted time tho. Nonetheless, I wasnt in a hurry, just a bit confused on the whole ordering process. Ordered the salmon and unagi ouzisushi - loooooved the salmon one, unagi actually was a bit dry. Salmon sashimi comes in 3 ginormous pieces. Will come again, would recommend. Edit: also forgot to mention, saw the pickles at the snacks area and added that on to my order, which proved to be a great choice!
order 2 rolls and a set of 40 pcs sushi. waited like an hour. it is not happen during rush hours I was the only customer in the store ordering sushi. too too slow.
Fresh and delicious food for a fair price. Will come back again. We also tried the matcha ice cream and it was very good. Creamy and smooth. Well-deserved 5-star
Very delicious Japanese food! We tried their Kaisen Don, Hayashi Rice, Spicy Tuna Roll, Matcha Soft Serve and Matcha/Kinako Twist in Charcoal Cone. Loved everything!! The quality of the sushi/sashimi was superb. The Hayashi Rice was very flavourful and dessert was absolutely delightful. Will certainly be back!!!
2022 October 4 This review is only for the ice cream. Located inside the C&C plaza/supermarket, youll find a few storefronts including this Japanese style restaurant serving sushi and ice cream. The sushi itself looks pretty decent for what it is, but its the ice cream that lured me in. Ice cream ~$6.70 after taxes The ice cream typically comes in two flavors and there might be some seasonal/special flavors. The soy ice cream was light yet fairly good in flavor. The black sesame was also just as good. Smooth and also fairly good flavors. Would certainly come back for the ice cream. Free parking in the plaza.
Premium Sushi bowl which is their best seller according to the staff - tasted like old fish. Will keep me off sushi for a good long while.
I tried the Kinako Roasted Soybean flavour and it was delicious. Generous amount of soft serve. Well worth a try if youre in the area.
Spent 40 bucks on uni hamachi and tuna don. Hamachi and tuna had ice in it. Uni is just about the most bitter thing Ive ever had. Ice cream is really good though, with a vast choice of unique flavors.
Fantastic place to go for traditional and unique Japanese food. A far higher quality then one expects from a place with takeout in the name.
Got the cheese cake ice cream parfait. Its awful. The bottom was filled with graham crackers, only the top half had ice cream. How are we supposed to eat the crackers at the bottom ? The cheesecake was hard and frozen, the nuts on the top were expired and left an awful after taste. The only saving grace was the hojicha ice cream.
Tasty interesting dessert, quite pricey though, store associates were nice
Japanese take out place located inside C&C Supermarket building. They serve specialty ice cream (matcha/hojicha) as well as a variety of donburi (Japanese rice bowls) and sushi/sashimi. We ordered unagi (eel) don and katsu (pork cutlet) don for take out. It took around 10-15 minutes so we were able to do some grocery shopping and come back to pick it up. The katsu don was probably some of the best Ive had in Toronto. And Ive been to a few donburi places in Japan. The pork and egg was perfectly cooked and the sauce was just the right amount to not make the rice soggy. The unagi don was also great. The eel still feels warm after the drive home and feels like it would melt in your mouth. I will definitely come back and try their other bowls.
A little pricey, but definitely worth it! I ordered the Tokyo Cheesecake and Mochi Azuki sundae. The soft serve green tea ice cream was delicious and the cheesecake is so buttery soft. I wouldnt order it everyday, however as a treat once in a while, I would absolutely recommend it :)
This was a fun find. Great staff and good selection. Definitely worth a try.
Tried the premium sushi today. It is delicious. Will definitely buy it again Too bad no UNI today
The ice cream had a refreshing flavor not too sweet. Definitely enjoyable for the right person. Other people might be a swing and a miss.
I ordered the torched sushi set for $18 and i got their matcha and hojicha soft serve for free. The ice cream was good but the sushi was bad. The sushi rice was overcooked and they had way too much rice. The seafood didn t have much flavor and was mostly covered by the mayo.
Amazing soft serve sundaes! Sandos are just lovely. But the food is out of this world too. Really enjoyed the uni and ikura on rice. Very well prepared, the rice is perfection and the servings generous. Must try!
Great Hojicha ice cream and Matcha ice cream! Been here too many times during while doing groceries on the side at C&C. Their Hojicha ice cream has a stronger tea flavour which is refreshing as there I often have too many matcha flavoured ice cream elsewhere. It does cost $1 more to get the Hojicha flavour or twist vs just match on it s own. Recently tried the sashimi don which came with a free ice cream and they had a large portion of salmon + hamachi sashimi and rice for $15. Overall I love their ice cream in a cone but they also have sundaes too which are fun to try but a bit on the sweeter side for me. Would always come back for dessert!
Today I learned that Hojicha is roasted green tea flavour...in an icecream! It was so delicious. A lightly roasted herb taste. This is how grown ups eat icecream Beautifully out together with rice balls, chocolate sticks and Oreos at the bottom. The service was informative and kind. And my icecream was made quickly. Its in a cup the size or a small Timmys iced coffee. I would only recommend that there be options for what bottom youd like. I could use more rice balls in my life
This was Yummmmy !! The tea flavour is refreshing and light
If I were rating the hojicha soft serve alone, I wouldve given 4 stars, maybe even 4.5. I was so impressed by their icecream that I returned to try their food. Boy was I shocked by how inedible the uni botan-ebi don was!! Dont be deceived by my photos. I was initially pleased with the overall presentation. The uni looked so bright and inviting, but when I actually tasted it, it was extremely bitter and slimey (aka starting to disintegrate). Im a big fan of uni and this was probably some of the most unpleasant tasting uni Ive ever had in my entire life. Without a doubt, the uni was no longer fresh. I also noticed that the shrimp lost its translucency and the flesh looked dry and discoloured. The shrimp tasted off, like it had been left in the fridge for a few days. The Katsu don was thankfully homey tasting but the uni botan-ebi don scared me off of their food forever. For $39 before tax the uni botan-ebi don was not cheap. It pains me to write this because I want to support this new and local business but they really need to ensure that their seafood is fresh before serving it to customers. That being said, I would only return for their icecream...if I can erase the taste of that uni from my mind...and tongue.
We ordered a premium sushi set ($32) and a ootoro set ($39). The seafood is very fresh. The sushi rice could use more sugar and vinegar though. But overall, very happy with the quality at this price point. Will definitely come again. The sushi trays also came with two free croffles. The cinnamon sugar one was so good. A side note to the owner, providing customers with made in Japan soy sauce would be much appreciated. We didnt like the taste of the made in China soy sauce that was provided. Fortunately, we have a bottle of Kikkoman soy sauce at home
Tried the Nutella croffle and Katsu don, not worth the price. Will not come again.
This place sell the fusion or pastry Croffles (a crossed of Croissant and waffles) Like other Japanese-styled pastries, it is sort of chewy. So, not my kind of snack. Price-wise, it is decent at about $3.50 palm-sized. Many flavors to choose from. I had the nutella and cinnamon sugar croffles.
Very delicious I ll be back again for sure!!!!
Got the ice cream with croffle (croissant pressed into a waffle shape) and while I wasn t wowed by the ice cream (hojicha and matcha) my taste buds definitely loved the croffle. I liked it so much that I purchased it by itself.
I was very impressed with the food at Kitaya. I went with the poké special which came with fresh mango, edamamé and for me, huge chunks of fresh salmon. They were also offering a wide range of sushi and noodle dishes with a focus on freshness. And if you dont try their croffle (a delicious croissant/waffle hybrid) youll kick yourself.
Hojicha soft serve was great, it has more creamy side than the tea itself. Still awesome for people who doesn t want strong taste of tea. Waffle is more on the chewy side almost like a mixture of mochi and waffle in between. It isn t bad.
Ice cream tastes good. I picked the one with cheesecake, pretty special. Most of the ice cream has walnut base which is not that common in other places.
Thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Sashimi was fresh and the price was decent for quality. First time trying a croffle and definitely wont be my last.
I only passed by there today. Due to there were too many people and we are still under the pandemic, will try next time. The waffles looked nice though.
Okay so I have a new found love for croffles ~ croissant waffle They are buttery and soft but also a little crisp. The perfect combination. The cheesy one was great for those who like savory and the strawberry cream cheese is great for those with a sweet tooth. The strawberry sandwich, OOF. So good!! The bread was milky and fluffy, the whipped cream was so light and the strawberries were well strawberries . Ive seen endless insta posts about the fruit sandwiches and I can firmly say they are immaculate. The tuna and salmon don was so fresh along with the sushi The hojicha icecream was so delicious, the flavour was intense but not overpowering. The icecream itself was very light. And who doesnt love castella. Hojicha is Japanese green tea unlike others because it is roasted.
Already been here twice! Both times trying different soft serve combinations and croffles. The soft serve was very nice and refreshing! Amazing for hot summer days! The amount of ice cream is very generous too! I have been on a big hojicha craze this past summer and extremely loved their ice cream! The first time I had the castella classic and added on a Nutella waffle. For the soft serve, it did take me getting used to as the ice cream melts a bit and soaks into the cake it did come out a little too moist for my liking, but I did love both textures separately! Second time around, I had the pudding a la mode and mochi azuki and added the strawberry cream cheese and cinnamon sugar croffle! This time the add in of the Japanese pudding worked out a lot better and loved the textures it brought! The croffle as always has been on point! Nice amount of chew with a flaky texture as well! Service was decent and enjoyed my service more the first time around with a lady, but the man the second time seemed a little more rushed. But no major complaints! Definitely would return as they also have japanese fruit sandos, sushi offerings and more soft serve options! Great job overall! Follow me on IG @thirst_and_taste for better pics and more amazing content!
I ve always been a fan of matcha ice cream. Initially, when I first saw pictures of the matcha ice cream from here, I thought it looked very milky (and presumed it wouldn t have a very strong matcha tea/flavour). Turns out it was pretty good! I especially liked their option to choose the matcha/hojicha twist - seemed like the best of both worlds . However the prices are a little pricier compared to other matcha ice cream places.
Came here for the ice cream. It wasnt bad, the ice cream had really good strong flavour with the nice silky texture of well made soft serve. The mochi bits can have drier edges as theyre microwaved to soften. Overall enjoyable experience, would go again if Im in the area, but not something Id have strong cravings for.
This place is hidden the C&C grocery plaza and not visible from the street. The croffle was amazing. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Definitely will get that again. I can see some of them getting soggy if you didnt eat right away. Tokyo cheesecake was good too. Never had hojicha soft serve (roasted green tea) before and I personally prefer it over matcha. I love ice cream so I wish they had more soft serve flavours. Its on the pricey side but its a big dessert Didnt try their sushi.
Ive had sundaes from here twice and both times they were great! The hojicha soft serve is probably my favourite, but its nice to see theyre adding more flavours even if its only temporary. The kinoko and black sesame are tasty and distinct flavours on their own but also mix well. Cookies and mochi is a little too sweet for me but pudding a la mode is just right!
Excellent desserts and soft serve ice cream. Best soft serve Ive had so far in the GTA.
Havent tried their desserts but their sushi definitely lives up to their price point. Cute little spot and friendly staff. Look out for the specials to try the menu items!
I know this place has a lot of hype for its ice-cream, but their SUSHI - probably some of the best sushi Ive ever had. Have ordered their platters twice now (torched and non torched) and both have been insanely good. On the pricier end but you get what you pay for. Would recommend! (picture of whats left anyways )
