The McKenzie Room might be the best restaurant no one’s heard of, and I’m tempted to keep it that way. Logan, Brett, Emily, and Chef Sean made us feel like family from the start. The food? Flawless. The espresso martinis? Emma says they’re the best she’s ever had, and she doesn’t hand out compliments like that. The duck? Andrew was speechless after the first bite. They even slid in a secret birthday cake mid-meal, which somehow didn’t feel weird—it just worked. The service hit that sweet spot between laid-back and first-class. If you’re into exceptional food, drinks, and people who actually seem to enjoy what they do, this is your place. Logan’s your cocktail king. Brett is your server extraordinaire and the rest of the team is just icing on the cake. Highly highly highly (yes 3) recommend! We’ll be back in no time.

I really wanted to like this as much as everyone who has recommended it to me and everyone on Reddit. For a restaurant with a tasting menu vibe that was named in the Michelin Guide…it is priced very reasonably. I did the solo 5 course tasting menu. The only exceptional thing I ate was the salmon with squash puree in the hidden gem entree. It was cooked extremely well and tasted soft and buttery. The beet dish was also very good. The worst dish was the Cap’n Crunch - a couple pieces of raw fish with vinegar that were not particularly enjoyable to eat. The most disappointing dish was the pork and beans. The pork belly was overcooked and tough. The beans were unremarkable. I was also unimpressed by the chocolate mousse with banana crème. Almost like it just existed because it had to fill the space of a dessert. Interestingly, as a solo diner, I was only served 1/2 of one dessert. In contrast, all of the couples around me received 2 full desserts (the full size mousse and the carrot cake) - so 1 full dessert per person. That math does not quite add up to me considering I’m paying the same price per person. But with all of the incredible reviews this restaurant has, my opinion is probably more reflective of something wrong with me wrong with me, not them. I would like to reiterate though, how unbelievably well priced the tasting menu is…$85 CAD for 5 courses. You really can’t beat that.

I just love this place. We've been going for years and most recently went for our anniversary. They are consistent in surprising us with new and delicious flavours, and we'll never stop ordering chicken of the sea. During this visit our favourite was the duck and cherry dish, which was such a decadent, deep, and flavourful experience. For those who haven't been, the tasting menu is the way to go. The atmosphere, staff, and chefs are lovely people with a passion for their crafts. If you bring 4 people, you get to taste the whole menu and it is amazing. Even the desserts surprise me every time.

Attended for my partner's birthday and had a great visit. Servers were attentive but not overbearing, happy to provide appropriate wine pairings to my partners tastes. Added some flair and humour. Cocktails also fantastic, love the Mia Goth (the name and the drink) and the Poor Charley's Armagnac. Just the Two of Us was wonderful, great array of layered complex flavours, well crafted as a whole, nice stepping through of the menu with variance and separating more rich courses with more refreshing courses. Accommodated my partner's allergy with grace. Music choices were right up my alley. Overall vibes very much my shit. Overall excellent.

The Mackenzie room is a beautiful restaurant across the street from Oppenheimer park. Don’t let the area fool you as it is a fine dining restaurant with top tier food. The tasting menu is the way to go at this farm to fresh place. Giving a taste of a few options on their seasonal menu. The serves are well educated on everything and offer good pairing options with the delicious food.

Heard about the place through a friend + Robin from HIMYM. It was one of, if not the best dining experience I’ve ever had. Currently solo travelling through Canada and got the solo tasting menu, which was beautiful. The bartender was absolutely great, atmosphere was so good and sparked a conversation with someone from NY. There was a waitress from my home country which made it even better. Overall it’s definitely a place to go!

One of the best meals I’ve had in a while. The food was incredible, the ambience was amazing and the “I want it all” tasting-menu style option allowed us to try everything on the menu and was fun/interactive. I wasn’t drinking tonight but the cocktail options were extensive. Highly, highly recommend.

We did “I want it all” and it was a fantastic culinary experience. Please make sure you budget plenty of time for your meal. We made the mistake of booking symphony tickets after our dinner reservation and we cut it close. You will want to savor the delicious flavors and pace yourself to enjoy the full experience and progressive menu. Nevertheless the service was excellent and our server was fantastic and helped us get out the door. Straight Outta Compte was hands down my favorite dish, I’m still dreaming about it! Highly recommend diners to try it! Thank you Mackenzie Room, we will be back!!

I just read through the the other reviews and I have to say it reminds me why I detest the general publics total lack of understanding of food in general (Im a former film cook so I have a general understanding what it takes to put out a quality product for people with extremely high expectations), & a total inability to grasp that food costs have gone up 35%, employees 35%, rent and general expenses at least 25% if not considerably more. Sadly, I own a small business and deal with the staggering level of ignorance of the general public whose expectations have gone through the roof while they pinch every last penny. Dont get me wrong, the last few years have been brutal on everyone, but I can tell you that the people to hate-on arent small restaurants with custom menus from scratch while you pay almost the same amount for cactus club pre-made crap regularly without a moments thought because of a tight short skirt. The amount of complaints I saw in the reviews that said, we asked for a bunch of specialty stuff, change orders for our odd number diners, that the Restaurant WAS BUSY,?!?!? exemptions were difficult (an empty chair is money that they lose! I understand that people who dont run businesses are ignorant of that fact, so Im explaining it. Custom menu items slow everything down which also cost more money while messing up the production line.) So when theyre asked to kindly keep it moving as empty seats and special orders dont unfortunately keep the lights on at a restaurant they get a pissy two star review despite ALL the effort put In to accommodate those people s needs but with zero consideration for the restaurants necessity to keep things moving to make money (Im diabetic now and unfortunately I have to ask a whole bunch of super irritating questions about the menu which I as an ex-chef, Absolutely hate but in the last 5 years as all the ingredients have become considerably cheaper to meet food costs , everything has much more sugar added as its always a cheaper way to make things, but I sadly I cant eat it. Thats not the restaurants fault that I am sick and life is unfair, but more importantly, I super appreciate how irritating special requests are & tip accordingly. I mean, could you imagine that you are forming a set of stairs and a person comes in halfway through the last piece of the concrete being set and asking if they mind adding a completely different set on the side, I mean youre making them anyways right?! I have a lot more to say, but I dont want it to blow back on the restaurant as my personal bitterness towards the general publics complete and total lack of gratitude for small businesses is massive. My point is that ALL the horrific stuff that AMAZON, APPLE, LYFT & ALL THE CORPORATIONS THAT DONT PAY A NICKEL OF TAXES & havent paid ANY TAXES! Are the problem! Ive been at this location a number of times the last few years and has everything been perfect? F No! Nor has any restaurant, where everythings been perfect at any point, ever!?! However, is the food original and made with genuine love? Abso-f******-lutely and Im just flabbergasted that people could give a two-star review over such Petty things as the food was great but I felt rushed Really?!?; If you had any idea of how much it cost to staff, a restaurant, cover rent, cover all of the overhead, not to mention any of the issues with equipment for the constant problems running a restaurant?!?! You would be shocked by the fact that these people tried this BIZ at all! Because its absolutely not worth it cause no goddamn money in restaurants unless you make cactus club Pre-Made factory frozen garbage. Sure enough you two-star m************ bitching that you didnt get everything instantly and perfectly the moment you wanted it, with your specialty orders, with five goddamn seats is why these types of places will eventually close down and while the rest of us rightfully cry about not having anywhere good to eat anymore....... YOU will be also the first people to say what happened? Ugh. I despise humanity.

The Mackenzie Room is a must. Our bartender/sever Logan was so awesome and knowledgable. We did the tasting menu for 2 with red wine and added an extra dessert which they put on the house because we said we were celebrating. Its a place you could hang your hat - and we did. The food was spectacular, ambiance warm and well lit, and our favorite thing was the chocolate mousse. Thank you Logan, 10 booms, will go back

It has been a few years since I had dinner here! Unfortunately, we left disappointed. While the atmosphere was great, the menu has a very cheap feel to it now. I understand food costs have increased, though $58 (without tax) for pork and beans (literally) just seemed wild. We also had an issue with our wine, brought it to the server s attention, and she said the bottle has been open for a day or two so the vinegar notes were normal (wtf), $400 later and we were left confused.

We did not have a good experience. We thought the menu was very small and not diversified. Food was mid and expensive. I found a huge hair in my salmon, probably because 3 out of 5 line cooks were wearing a supreme hat. Besides that, they gave my gf s coat to someone else. They were very apologizing, but offered nothing in return. We had to go back another day to get it.

This was one of the best culinary experiences of my life. We sat at the bar and our mixologist/server for the evening was incredible. He was is so talented and Im sad that I forgot his name! The food was amazing. However, perhaps the real show stopper here was the kitchen symphony who performed without missing a beat. I am still in shock at how such a small kitchen and very on display, managed to coordinate the evenings dishes coming out perfectly. I have never seen anything like this. I did feel like I was witnessing The Bear (on one of their great nights) here. It was just mesmerizing. If you want to witness kitchen magic and this super talented mixologist then sit at the bar! I could rave on about the food but enough people have. Its worthy of all its awards and then some! Everything went together perfectly. Thank you MacKenzie Room for such an amazing experience. I cant wait to get back!

We got sprayed two separate times by two different waiters during our meal while they were wiping down the tables beside us. Got on our arms and water glasses (potentially our food? but we had lost our appetite at that point). Disappointing to have that type of carelessness from a fine dining establishment. Food was OK - 2/5 courses from the tasting menu were unique but the rest were just OK.. Expected a a certain level of quality and taste that was clearly lacking in this fine dining establishment

Loved the interior, food was spectacular, staff was clearly having a good time which is always a good way to set a vibe. BUT we were offered still or sparkling water - we chose sparkling and they filled our glasses and took the bottle away. Then, throughout the night theyd inconspicuously refill our glasses. I drank like 3 bottles worth myself cus it was there in front of me. Only after we left was I made aware that we were charged for the sparkling water! You gotta let people know, OR alternatively leave the bottles on the table so we can gauge our own water consumption. It felt like unnecessary gouging and Im still bitter about it 24 hours later. Otherwise, 5 stars.

My group did the tasting menu and I explained that I had a shellfish allergy when we arrived. The server assured me there was no shellfish on their menu and also said that they would tell the kitchen as an extra precaution. I dont think they did that as we were served Chicken of the Sea which has sea urchin and squid ink (both are shellfish) with no warning of its shellfish contents. We were told that its the restaurants most popular dish, so its pretty concerning they didnt know that it contained one of only 10 priority allergens outlined by the CFIA. The rest of my group ordered drinks which arrived in a timely manner except mine. When I reminded the server they said let me go check with the bar and I watched them walk over to the tablet (the opposite end of the room from the bar) to input my drink into their system. Food was overall great - particularly the showstopper salad, strawberry fields, cease and desist, the salmon and the halibut. Would not recommend the lamb or either dessert (blue velvet, golden ticket). Lastly, not sure if it was a misunderstanding on my part for I want it all but there were 3 dishes on the chalkboard that we were not served. It may have been mentioned to us at the beginning of the meal but it was extremely loud so I couldnt hear everything that was said. Dietary restrictions: I informed them of my shellfish allergy, was told there was no shellfish on the menu, then the first dish served contained two types of shellfish.

This used to be my favorite restaurant, but today s experience was pretty disappointing. The flavor of the Reed s Radishes was way too overpowering and didn t feel balanced at all. The duck breast was undercooked almost close to perfectly cooked, but honestly, it was raw. The server was great overall, but when we mentioned the duck issue, she didn t actually check the meat. Instead, she just explained that it was cooked sous vide, so it looks pink, and said the chef said it was fine. It was strange because the restaurant was really dim, and no one even took a proper look at the duck. Diners know what raw meat looks like, and this wasn t a matter of personal preference it was undercooked. I gave it a try since the server reassured us it was safe to eat, but my partner didn t. After dinner, I ended up with a stomachache and diarrhoea. It s sad because my last experience here was great, but after tonight, I don t think I ll be coming back.

Humble neighbourhood a stones throw away which you can t help but be aware of, maybe keeps the rent down so they can focus on quality produce.

Chef Josh exceeded our expectations with the sea urchin pate, brioche died black with squid ink and the stuffed rabbit leg. Both the bartender and chef served one of the courses, which was neat to hear their voices explain the dish they presented. The downside a couple was obnoxiously taking photos of their food and wine (it was some sort of photo shoot) throughout the entire time we were there and even wielded a light box.

We dined July 13th and did the shared menu, the food was delicious and as my partner is a vegetarian, accommodations were made to exlclude any meat ingredients! We sat at the end of the bar closet to the kitchen, the seats are wooden and not very comfortable for a two hour dining, cushions recommended. Diego when drying the knifes and forks please stop dropping them into the utensil holder...it was so loud and annoying, all other servers placed them in the holder after drying. We used a gift card and thought it was hilarious and very cheeky to have the bartender inform us that the tip must be adjusted on the balance to reflect a tip on the overall cost. Saying something like that to us even though already known left a bitter taste.

Every time I go here with my girlfriend, we are reminded why this is our favorite restaurant. Everything is top-notch. The food: we always get dinner for two and share the selection of dishes on the menu. We clean every plate, and there is nothing we have not loved after my 5th time going there. But the Sea Urchin pate and squid ink bread goes against all my initial instincts to be my favorite dish. The service is great, and the detailed explanation of the food and drinks is both intriguing and helpful. The waiter promised to do his take on my girlfriends favorite drink for her birthday, Ceasars! Atmosphere is always a treat. We have almost always ended up in great conversation with both the waiting staff and tables beside us. We came with reservations for 6pm. We were promptly seated in a very full restaurant. I ordered the pearl martini. It was a little too strong for me and had a bit too much onion flavour. We got the I want it all! For 89$ per person. The showstopper salad with legumes, cheese and salsa Verde. It was really fresh tasting. very big portion. The chicken of the sea was complex and delicious. But I was really disappointed with the black squid brioche. It lacked the fluffiness that you usually get with the brioche. The texture just wasnt right. But the sea urchin with the hazelnut was a really good combination. I liked the addition of the fruit as well to help cut through the sea urchin. I would recommend this dish if it wasnt for the brioche. The garden state was probably one of the best dishes of the night. I loved the puree on the bottom. It was really good and addictive. It needed a tad more chicken skin for a bit of extra crunch but other than that. I also loved the asparagus. This was perfect. The faux tartare was disappointing. The beef had no beef flavour. I liked the crackers. Very crunchy. But other than that it was disappointing. The pierre Elliot credo with the hamachi was okay. Nothing show stopping but the flavours were there. Needed a bit more sourness for it to taste fresh The straight outta comte was not bad. I loved the fingerling potatoes and the endive. The arctic Charley was okay. Not my favorite. I loved the crispness of the skin. I didnt think the sauce Vin rouge went with it. The de la sole with leeks truffle and pate brisee was okay. It needed way more truffle flavour. The Cauliflower cakes were creative but didnt tie well with the sole inside the pastry. The sole itself was very flaky and light. A bit too seafoody for us. The down the rabbit hole was quite interesting. The mortadella inside the rabbit was very interesting. The chicken skin wrapped on the outside of this dish was pretty good. I loved the contrast of textures. The mortadella was a bit tofu feeling but interesting. The full English with the morel mushrooms was okay. The lamb didnt have much lamb flavour but this dish tasted pretty standard, nothing special. The desserts pear necessities and pink chiffon desserts were okay. The pear necessities was kind of one dimensional and tasted mostly like chocolate. The chocolate part on the bottom had a kind of weird texture. I didnt have enough room for the pink chiffon . The creme diplomat was delicious though. Overall the service here was really good. The food started great and ended on kind of a disappointing note. If I visit again I would not get the I want it all because its just too much food. Off their current menu I would recommend the garden state, chicken of the sea, straight outta comte and down the rabbit hole.

Bouche was a fine start, but because it was only one-bite-size, I cant recall the details other than it had caviar and tasted good. The chicken liver and uni mousse tasted bitter and gamey, the squid ink brioche was good, but I hated the mousse. The Gardens (I think thats the name) had a rich and interesting texture. The fried chicken skin was crispy but not greasy, the maitake and asparagus were very delicious, and at the bottom, I recall the server said it was roasted tofu, which had a texture similar to Greek yogurt. Dipping the asparagus in it was very flavorful. This was my favorite. Arctic char was cooked to the perfect texture, very tender and umami-rich. I usually hate split peas, but the split peas in this course were too tasty not to finish them all. The rabbit course was good, but nothing stood out. The choux had a crispy crust, and the mousseline was creamy but slightly heavy. The apple puree was very refreshing and cut through the heaviness a little. The music was too loud, but I will probably visit again.

I went to the restaurant for the dine out menu with my friend. The two main meals were really perfunctory. Char Char Blinks was only a tiny salmon on top of the sides with sause, the fish skin was even not crispy, and the fish meat did not tastes very fresh. Notorious P.I.G was the dish I expected the most, however it was most disappointing. The meat itself was too fatty to eat, obviously, they are not using good quality meat as ingredient. There was only super little part of meat we can eat. The dessert also tasted very dry inside. I think it was pre-made instead of fresh made. The chocolate glaze was totally apart from the cake inside, and the whole flavor wasnt cohesive, as different ingredients didnt go well with each other. Also, we were also not satisfied with the service. Servers response was slow and we finially got the tissue after three callings. The waiteress seemed very impatient and didnt simle when introducing the meal. The atmosphere is noisy, it was very hard to talk with my friend. Overall, we didnt feel full after finishing the whole meal, even we are just two girls, but it cost us $75/person after tax and tips - Not worth the money.

Being so close to such a high calibre restaurant in St Lawrence, it would be easy for The Mackenzie Room to be living in the former s shadow. That was my worry when I came here for dine out 2024. And after enjoying a delicious meal, I was very happy to find out that is certainly not the case. Each dish was packed full of flavour and technique, I was quite impressed. Three dishes stood out from the rest. Root 66, an unassuming showing of parsley root had a puree of sorts that had me licking my plate. Char Char binks, a funnily named arctic char dish, was one of the best pieces of fish i ve ever had. Full of flavour and incredibly tender. Another perfectly balanced dish. Pear necessities, my final standout dish was the dessert. An intriguing treat consisting of pear, chocolate, salted caramel, and peppercorn. The Mackenzie Room is not an establishment to be ignored, and I will recommend it as a must try for Vancouver foodies.

Had the tasting menu for two. The service was nice, and atmosphere was cozy. Unfortunately the food was a big disappointment. Aside from the salad (which was excellent), everything else was totally lacking flavor. In the end I felt sad that we splurged on this place ($250 for two with tax and tip) only to leave so underwhelmed. The pork belly wasn t rendered properly, so the texture was gummy and chewy. The fish totally lacked salt and flavor of any kind. The dessert was dry and not sweet, save the sauce. The best part of the experience was the beautiful plating of the food and the drinks, for which I ll give it two stars. I left feeling taken for a ride distracted by and charged for a cool factor , while being served food that tasted of no creativity.

Service was very good and attentive. Ambience was rustic and enjoyable. Food was mediocre. First dish was a potatoe tartlet with cream cheese and something similar to caviar - tasted like a blob of potatoes from a frozen pack of tater tots. Unfortunately a few of the dishes lacked much depth of flavour and as usual with a tasting menu, spend above and beyond but still leave feeling like you need another meal. The ink bread was amazing, credit where credit is due. Truffle mushroom, could barely taste any truffle. The quail was tender and tasty. The frois grios was decent. Desert was hard, dry and nothing to shout home about with a pear topping. Disappointing after hearing so many positive reviews.

Our dishes were tasty, especially Squid games. Didn t really appreciate the salad -Showstopper. It s too sour. The Crabby American was good, but if you add lobster it will cost you 108 dollars. The lobster is presented as a half lobster but it s just a small tale of a small lobster. The restaurant is overpriced. They don t give you an option to choose a reasonably priced wine, menu starts from 90 a bottle. I gave 4 stars because I liked the food but the dishes are small when it could have been more reasonable. The restaurant is in a rather edgy district.

Overall I thought for the food and service, the price we paid was fair. I would definitely come back with 4 people to try the full tasting menu. Areas for improvement would be check the chairs/stools to make sure theyre level as mine was wobbly. Not a huge thing but its a small fix that I think would improve the experience. Also I would recommend Ubering as the area is unfortunately very sketchy. If you are going to walk, Id recommend parking in the neighborhood with houses more south and then walking.

Despite only being in operation for close to 8 years, The Mackenzie Room is a veritable institution in Vancouver where good restaurants are never far away. The combined efforts from the attentive and affable front of service with a highly proficient kitchen produce a dining experience well worth its accolades. In broad terms, they serve a streamlined menu of pacific northwestern cuisine accented by international influences executed with a tasteful interplay between modern and classic technique. In more colloquial terms, the menus short and sweet; and it all tastes good. Its highly recommended to partake in the dineout menu while it is available and the 4 person set course menu at any other time of year. Given that the menu is subject to seasonal and culinary tides, any specific dishes I point may not be there long after this review. If these are available and youre supplementing or foregoing the set course, the following dishes are not to be missed: Sir Salmon Rushdie - A gently cooked cut of salmon upon a bed of verdant spinach surrounded by silky miso and nori sauces. Quince of Darkness - Chestnut cream and quince jam, truly sing by themselves, but the rhythm section of crisp cacao bark and bittersweet cake certainly have chops too. Hello Clarice - A southeast Asian/Filipino inspired lamb tartare thats savory to the core. Not naming names but this dish outdoes tartare served elsewhere that rely on heavy sauces and garnishes. In summary, The Mackenzie Room is a fine dining restaurant where youll actually enjoy your meal rather than be left wanting. Wheelchair accessibility: Accessible, but can be fairly crowded during service, best confirm when reserving.

Summary: Very unique thoughtful dishes, great ambience, and amazing service to round out a memorable experience! Checked out Mackenzie Room to celebrate my birthday and was very happy with the decision! We tried the Dine OUt menu and opted to sub the Pork dish for the Sablefish as my partner is Pescatarian. Ambience: 5/5 - Cozy atmosphere with great furnishings - Felt very at home and made for a comfortable environment to enjoy the amazing food - Was a cooler night than usual in Vancouver and it got a bit chilly when patrons entered and left the restaurant. This is being really nitpicky though and I wouldnt say it took away from our experience - Music level was perfect and we didnt find that background noise level was too loud as mentioned in other reviews (it being a Monday evening could have been part of the reason) Service: 5/5 Went in on a Monday evening so it wasnt too busy. We were greeted very warmly and all the staff were very friendly and came across as genuine. All the food came out quickly and our plates were cleared promptly without making us feel rushed whatsoever Food: 5/5 While Im definitely partial to protein-heavy meat dishes, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the Sea Urchin (Chicken of the Sea) and Parsnip (Wesley Snips) dishes. Each dish was very well balanced, and the flavors were unique. That said, the standout dish for me was the Chicken of the Sea because everything from the presentation and taste of the brioche bread, all the way to the texture of the hazelnut buttered sea urchin combo were incredibly well crafted. I already want to go back just for this dish! The Salmon (Sir Salmon Rushdie), Sablefish (Surf and Surf), and dessert (Quince of Darkness) were all delicious and the portion sizes were very reasonable too. The next most memorable item for me after the Chicken of the Sea would have to be the Russian Cigarette Paper in the dessert - never had anything like it and it was fantastic! I was on the hungrier side and ended up ordering the Lamb Tartare (Hello Clarice) dish for myself - gotta treat yourself, especially on your birthday right? The dish was fantastic (loved the strong acid flavours that came through). That dish definitely put me over the top, but I had no regrets! Im definitely planning a return visit with some friends to try the I want it All. Drinks: 5/5 My partner opted to try the wine pairings with the Dine Out menu. She was very happy with each pairing, though she did find one of the wines on the sweeter side. She also very much loved one of the South African dryer wines that was served with the Sablefish. I tried the Aggies Manhattan and thought it was very well balanced. It had the perfect amount of flavour while being spirit-forward. Ended up ordering a 2nd one as it was delicious! Overall Rating: 5/5 I had to write a review for our experience at Mackenzie Room as it made for a very memorable and DELICIOUS meal. Ive been putting off writing my first review, but I HAD to write one for the Mackenzie Room after how great the whole experience was! Vegetarian options: Delicious vegetarian dishes, especially the parsnips! Parking: Street parking out front on Cordova. Not the nicest area

My boyfriend and I came in last night for the first time to try their Dine-out Vancouver menu and we were seated at the bar. The service and food was good overall, we loved the rustic ambiance, though it was very dark and noisy. We also noticed a tense atmosphere between staff. The person we assumed was the manager was yelling at staff members to the point where it disrupted our dining hall experience. We thought it was unprofessional and left a sour note in our mouths so I doubt we will be returning. In comparison to other restaurants of this price point, it was a huge letdown.

Incredible food! Culinary artistry served up in East Van. The chef s menu has everything. I found it to be filling. (For the guys, not quite.) the space was cozy, very cozy. The decor, furniture and lighting made it feel antique, like a community of old friends. Similarly, the service was also chummy, like we knew each other and could joke around casually. They also knew their staff, introducing each plate perfectly. The space and washrooms were clean. Some things to know before you go. The area is not upscale, downtown Van. I wouldn t walk from my car to the restaurant in the dark by myself. (Maybe that s just me.) The building is old. I noticed that my table was on a slight slant. If you re with vegan friends, the restaurant will accommodate, which is amazing and not too common. And make reservations, if you can!

I really tried to like the dishes here after thoroughly enjoying the food at one of their sister restaurants: Collective Goods Bistro & Grocer. Four dishes were ordered in total: 1) Chicken of the Sea, 2) Weekend at Bernaise, 3) Lifes a Biche, and 4) Pigs in a Blanket. 1) Chicken of the Sea - Creative dish and uni was delicious, matching well with the squid ink brioche. 2) Weekend at Bernaise - Im a huge fan of lamb so I was looking forward to this dish. The tartare was overall not too bad, although I felt the flavouring was a little overpowering and covered the actual taste of the lamb. What struck me as odd was the hollandaise sauce that was added to it. They simply did not go well together. 3) Lifes a Biche - This one was quite a disappointment. I felt the flavour clashed and I couldnt like any of the sauce/spices used for this dish. 4) Pigs in a Blanket - This one is quite creative, but again, similar to the comments above, the flavour just did not mesh well together. I also couldnt understand the pairing of pickle with mashed potato. Overall, salty and sour sort of overpowered everything. I have to give props to chefs for being creative and original, but I felt in some cases I wanted to say just because one could, does not mean one should. I understand food can be very subjective, but having tried countless restaurants in Vancouver from every cuisine with prices ranging from cheap to expensive, I was somewhat disappointed with this one. I felt overall the dishes were too saucy and hide the freshness of the ingredients used.

This was our third time here and unfortunately I do believe it will be our last. Before I explain my dissappointment I will start of by stating a few things: 1. The food was still certainly delicious, creative, and innovativ. While the Mackenzie Room sometimes lacks the polish of some of its contemporaries, it always makes up for it in raw creativity. 2. The Servers were wonderful and deserve everything for their hardwork and charm. Now, onto the disappointments. 1. Our first disappointment started with their handling of our reservations. We had set a reservation for 5 at 8:30 and upon arriving they were completely unprepared. It took a good 10-15 minutes for them to clear a table while we awkwardly stood near the door being jostled by others, including a walk-in couple that got a seat before us. 2. The second, and one of the largest disappointments, was how they handled our group size. This restaurant makes it clear the tasting menu is only for groups of 4 or larger. Not a problem, we brought 5. Or so we thought until our server had to rather awkwardly explain that the tasting menu is really only designed for 4 people and even though its charged per person, the amount of food would still be the same for 5 as it was for 4 and wouldnt be enough for our party. Have no fear though, there was a seperate tasting menu for 5 our waitress told us. Its the same as the normal one but with fewer dishes, just larger portions of the fewer ones. It also costs the same as the normal tasting menu. So we get less selection for the same price. At the waitresss urging we did the latter, and found the pacing and taste juxtapositions seriously lacking compared to our previous experience with the tasting menu. Not to mention, once again, that we paid the same we would have to get the entire experience had we come with one less. There is nothing on the website or menu stating that you should only come as a group of 4. It states 4 minimum. Overall I found this anti-customer approach to a menu extremely disappointing and unless they take action to change this, well therebare more french-inspired canadiana restaurants in vancouver for us to go to.

Menu items had funny names such as Weekend at Bearnaise, Hal 9000, Of Bison Men and my favorite Rhubarbra Streisand! Cocktails were very tasty and imaginative in their ingredients. I certainly will return on my next visit to Vancouver. Mackenzie is a little bit of a walk from most hotels, a taxi can make route finding easier.

I love this restaurant. We ve been a few times before, often for special occasions. My 10yr old wanted to try sea urchin, well you can t go wrong with Chicken of the Sea! Once again food was amazing, service is perfect. Bartender made my son some custom drinks that were delicious and made him feel welcome in a fine dining restaurant. Great restaurant for special occasions and family night out. We went at 5:30pm, there was Indigenous drumming and dancing in the park, great chance to see that part of the community.

My husband and I went here for my birthday dinner last month and overall feelings of this place was a mixed bag. Area around restaurant is a bit sketchy but we knew this coming in. Upon entering, the restaurant was about 1/4 full if that, but the hostess sat us uncomfortably close (as in right next to) another couple in the restaurant. We exchanged awkward glances with the couple before asking our server if we could please be moved to literally anywhere else in the near empty restaurant. Annoyed she goes, well you know the restaurant will be full by dinnertime before reluctantly moving us to another table. (This was literally a Monday at around 6pm and by the time we left a couple hours later the restaurant was not even half full, and no we didnt need to sit right next to another group) Food was hit-or-miss, we ordered the Showstopper Salad which was beautifully presented and well-balanced with the earthiness of the greens and the freshness of the cheese; the Chicken of the Sea- the urchin and squid ink brioche were unlike anything weve ever had before and the umami flavors of the squid ink played off very well with the slight sweetness of the urchin. Then we ordered the bison which we both found to be small, underwhelming and overseasoned, though the spinach side was very tasty. I cant even remember the other entree we ordered, which speaks for itself really. We are incredibly disappointed given that we had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while now, and especially after it was revealed to be Michelin recommended. Im not sure if they let their popularity get to their heads or if we just went on an off day, but honestly just the attitude of the service staff alone would make me think twice about coming back again. P.S. It doesnt cost your staff anything to smile and acknowledge a special occasion by the way. Something as simple as that goes a long way in my books

Dined solo to kick off my last week in Vancouver on this trip. Focusing on locally sourced ingredients, the solo menu is comprised 5 courses. At only $74, it s an incredible value. The menu has pun names which I absolutely adored; Sashimi Not, Zucc I am Your Father, Trout Krout Sprout, of Bison Men, and Le Big Mack. My favourite bites were the zucchini two ways, the trout (minus the brussels) and the King Salmon sashimi. The bison was very well cooked and the spinach was delicious but the potato was lacklustre. Along with the meal, the bar manager made me a beverage pairing which had cocktails and glasses of wine based on my preference. The final digestif had pickled spruce tips stuffed in an olive. There were a number of other dishes on the menu which caught my eye. I definitely will have to come back the next time I am in town.

We went in for the tasting menu. I can say honestly everything was well cooked and tasted nice but I always felt something was missing. When I go in for a fine dining experience I was expecting that the flavours on the dishes would be unique, but mainly I got unique ingredients but the flavours came off as ordinary. My partner specifically did not enjoy either dessert presented. The flavour combinations and sweetness were just not to her taste. I found them alright. To their benefit my partner also did not enjoy her cocktail and they replaced it with a specialty drink to her tastes, and at no charge. This may be a small detail but I found the combination of tables to water cups to be a poor match. The cups because of their girth were hard to grasp with smaller hands and since it didnt have a clear grip on it made the cup feel unsteady in the hands. This in combination with the cup would somewhat sticking to the tables after sitting for a couple minutes made that part of the experience uncomfortable. It is worth a visit but I would recommend going to other fine dining occassions as well as The Mackenzie Room.

Giving this a 1 star simply because the Bison dish I had was disappointing and a waste of time & money. The spinach was extremely salty, as in it tasted like it was just salt, no other flavours, and a lot of salt at that. The bison was cooked well but had no flavor on its own, and with the spinach it just ended up tasting like salt. Didnt bother to eat the mushrooms, the shallots were mediocre (the temperature was too cold to match the other items on the plate). The potatoes were the only good thing, and well, hard to mess up potatoes. This was a disappointing experience. At this price range I expected the quality of food to be at the very least, OK, but it was not even mediocre. It was gross. The service was okay. Our server was wonderful and made up for the poor attitude from other servers.

This local restaurant is one of my favourites in Vancouver. I haven t come across another restaurant that has consistently delicious food. Their I want it all menu is reasonably priced at $85 for 12 courses and all reasonably portioned that you d be full by the end of the meal. The service is excellent and the vibe is quite lively. The only thing I d note is that I d like the lights a tad brighter. If you are coming by vehicle you can come down Powell street after a left turn from Knight street. Park in front or on the next block, at $1 per hour. Definitely a must try if you are a local or visiting Vancouver for your first time. Make sure to book your reservations in advance (1 mth). Of all the courses I really liked the chicken of the sea , Hal 9000 , lamb tartare , Pigs in a blanket , and Rhubarbra streisand .

Did a tasting for 4. Came in with high expectations and loved the atmosphere and plating/punny names of the dishes. The food however was a disappointment. Under seasoned . missing umami, no layerjng in flavour, unseasoned blanched veg, all we tasted was yuzu. Would love for this place to be a gem in such a rough neighbourhood to bring more awareness of the issues at hand. But we left feeling underwhelmed. On the plus side, service and knowledge of the food was fantastic.

Excellent food- lots of different flavours. A great example of a tasting menu done very well. Wine pairings also good and varied (all Canadian wines). Servers were excellent but we did feel a bit rushed which took the edge off an otherwise excellent meal.

December 23, 2023

If I could go back in time and not eat here, I would. I felt like I was in an episode of Portlandia. The food is extremely try hard, with no flavor. There was a lot of ingredients, but none of them worked well together. We felt pressured into doing the tasting menu, but decided not to, because a patron was pregnant. The staff never forgave us. The 37 ingredient salad was the only good thing we had. The bend and snap was honestly disgusting, the flavor profiles didn t work well together, at all. The vegan latkes should not have been called latkes because they were the furthest thing from that, and tasted like sad flavorless vegetables. We never got bread, which wasn t on the menu, but was on the receipt.

We did the tasting menu for 2, on their website it says it comes with 6 dishes, it now only comes with 5. We enjoyed the food and ambiance but for the price point it should be 6 courses like it used to be. The drinks and our server was fantastic. Unfortunately not in the best neighborhood and it was definitely sad to see on route to this restaurant.

The food was superb. We came away reminiscing about several of the dishes and wishing we had more. The service was very friendly and prompt. Everything we could ask for in service. The only gripe I had, and it is indeed a small one is that the restaurant was way too dark. Walking out to the street after dinner we were dazzled by the brightness of the Vancouver lampposts.

I enjoyed the Mackenzie room at least a dozen times between 2016-2019, and everything was great then - the food was unbelievable, and the service fantastic. However, I have returned for the first time in 4 years and I can only describe the service as mean and off-putting. The waiters are no longer the knowledgeable and friendly people I interacted with before - this new cohort now treat me more like an annoyance than a welcome patron. The general manager in particular is unjustifiably mean, in a way that made my first experience if 4 years (my husbands 40th birthday no less) incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. I would go so far as describe the atmosphere as toxic because of the poor attitude of the waiters/general manager. It is breaking my heart to put this review, as I adored the Mackenzie room before, but can no longer justify paying 200-300$ for a meal to be treated like an annoyance.

This was an uncomfortable and stressful dining experience. Upon being seated for our 6pm reservation, we were quickly told (more than once) that our table was needed by 8:30pm which we agreed was not a problem at all. We were celebrating a friends birthday and looking forward to what should have been a nice, relaxing and fun start to the evening. Instead, we felt extremely pressured by both of our waitresses to order immediately and that we should all order the tasting menu at $89 per person. We hadn t even been asked to order our drinks yet and were being rushed to order food 5 minutes after sitting down. We were also asked several times when our fifth guest would be arriving as she was running a few minutes late. She arrived at 6:08pm. It was rude and unnecessary and we were made to feel much more like a bother than a welcomed customer. We had to insist SEVERAL times that we would not be ordering the tasting menu as two of our friends had various dietary restrictions including no meat and seafood. The waitresses were not warm or welcoming at all and seemed irritated that we were not following their requests to order the tasting menu. It was extremely unfortunate and none of us will be returning again. Unfortunately the bad service ruined the experience for me to even enjoy the food.

We came to the restaurant on the recommendation of a colleague, and what a delightful discovery it was ! The ambiance and restaurant design are very pleasant. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by a charming staff, and our server even made the effort to address us in French, which truly added a special touch to our experience. However, the real star of the evening was the food. The dishes were simply exceptional, and it was evident that a lot of effort went into crafting the flavors and presentation. Every bite was a burst of flavors, and we were pleasantly surprised by the creativity of the dishes. Personally, Im not a big fan of desserts, but the plum choux with pistachio cream was simply divine. It was the perfect sweet touch to conclude this memorable feast. In summary, I wholeheartedly recommend this place. The restaurant offers an exceptional culinary experience, a pleasant atmosphere, and attentive service. If youre looking for a memorable gastronomic experience, look no further. This is a must-visit address.

For $89, you can get it all which is actually for the size of 5 people for each dish if you want to choose alacarte. Went in with a group of friends for dinner. Ordered off the a la carte menu, waitress told us it was only enough food for 2 people and then kept pestering us that we should order more or we will be hungry. On top of that, she didnt leave our table until we ordered more food and then just forgot our dessert at the end. When we asked about it, she told us she didnt even put the dessert order in.... None of us are big eaters, dont appreciate being what felt like scolded and pressured into ordering more. Food itself was fine, albeit overpriced, but what can you expect. If you are going to go here, its probably best to just shell out for the tasting menu or go somewhere else.
