1661 Granville St, Vancouver, BC V6Z 1N3, Canada
Refined spot for Chinese cuisine & a full bar amid classic decor with seasonal outdoor seating.
Very child friendly. They prepared a high chair and child plate for my friend's son. The food is exceptional. Best duck in the city compared to iden, mott32. Service was attentive. I highly recommend this place.
Comfortable sitting area. Good service. Food is Okay level. Duck is not too juicy. A little bit try. 肉夹馍is pretty good. Xiaolongbao is lamb filling. That’s quite different.
The view is very nice here, especially on a sunny day by the water. Parking is also very easy, although it may be confusing getting here if it’s your first time. Food is excellent. Lots of people talk about the duck already so I’m going to expand on other dishes. I recommend the hand made spinach noodles. It’s a nice small portion and very flavourful. My husband enjoys the wagyu fried rice and boneless beef ribs. The beef is very tender! I also love their passionfruit pudding dessert ^^ Service was excellent
Food was great! Service was not great for a fine dining restaurant. The worst interaction with the server was when I paid for the bill. It was my boyfriend’s birthday and I did not want my boyfriend to know how much I was paying so I tried to do it all quickly. I tipped $40 total on a $530 bill, I originally wanted to tip $20 but changed my mind last second. I notice a change in the waiters face as soon as he sees the tip and he asks if there was anything wrong and I told him the food was great. He then says well you didn’t even tip 10% and points to the $40 tip. I am confused and ask him if I’m required to tip a certain percentage, to which he says no and I respond “I don’t understand what the problem is.” My boyfriend and I leave after that. I tip based on service. I just didn’t think it was good, so if you go be prepared for the servers to request larger tips if you are tipping less than 15%. That last interaction soured the experience for me and I’m very disappointed as the food was phenomenal. When we were ordering the food I was trying to ask the server about the Peking duck I had ordered the day before and his response was “we are sold out” in a rude tone and I had to repeat to him and explain that I had ordered it yesterday and I just want to confirm they know that and it will be served. It was not a big deal at the time so I didn’t think too much of that interaction. My boyfriend and I throughout the night would have to wait a long time before anyone would come help us. When the Peking duck was being served the chef had finished cutting the duck skin and he stood there continuously looking around as no one was nearby to help serve the duck. Once we finished eating they did pack most of our food for us except for the dumpling soup that comes with the Peking duck. I’m not sure why they decided to toss that out as I did not even take one bite of it since I was already so full from previous dishes.
This dining experience was truly exceptional! The peking duck dazzled with its perfectly crispy skin and tender, flavorful meat. The wok-fried cumin duck bone was a delightful surprise as well. Dining among predominantly Chinese patrons added to the authentic atmosphere. I'm already looking forward to my next visit—it's a must for any food enthusiast!
Second time here and we were back for the duck. As usual, the view was amazing and we came on sunny day so that was even better. Chef put a show on the duck so it is recommended for those who like to take pictures. Service sometimes great sometimes could be better though, I guess only Chinese go to this place because whenever we called for reservation they always speak in Mandarin first.
High end Chinese restaurant that specializes in Peking Duck. Like all similar restaurants, you must pre order the duck in advance and it is worth it. What was unique about this place is that the Peking Duck is served with “sweet” condiments of jam and pear along with the usual hoisin sauce and green onions. Service is amazing and the owner clearly paid attention to ambiance, which is to be expected for a restaurant like this. There is lots of free parking available. This is a good place for a special occasion or romantic event. If you get a table by the water there are nice views too.
The best Peking duck I had since I came here in 1992. Nice duck on fire in front of you. The lamb in the picture is ok. Other dishes not bad. Good service. Free parking. Just ask for a permit from the restaurant and place it on dashboard. No beer on tap. Only bottle beer with nice & cold chilling glass.
Really. . . generally. . .
It s just expensive The roast duck is delicious The atmosphere is great
Its very awkward that the server asked why we tipped a certain amount, and put in his own amount of tip on the machine, and pass us the machine to tap on. I never expect a high ended place like this will give this kind of service. Very disappointed. The food is in general too greasy and heavily season as well, such as the wagyu fried rice and the stir fried dish of the peking duck. Some of us felt unwell after the meal because of that. Just dont go to this place.
The dishes are unique and reflect the unique flavor of Xian cuisine, the service quality is in place, and the environment is beautiful and comfortable!
Solid Peking duck, but not unique enough for 140$, add the standard side dishes which were unfortunately subpar, youre at 200$. Would go elsewhere if you are looking for duck, but other Chinese dishes were solid, if overpriced. Location was very hard to find. Parking: Need to get ticket from host Wheelchair accessibility: Not accessible
The northern Chinese food, this is the best i like in Vancouver..view++ service+++
They force you to purchase the more expansive duck when you want to get the second duck.
Overall its great to check out, however the price for the cost of the food as well as the amount doesnt seem to be fairly adjusted. Way too expensive even just for a TEA. OVERPRICED Food
Excellent place with excellent food, top notch service
What a view, even on a rainy day. Service was outstanding. Food was delicious,..but Im not Asian so I cant dispute the other reviews that didnt think so. But this place doesnt need to care about Google reviews.. theyll just keep doing what they do, give you great service in a beautiful location with high quality food
There were only two of us so I couldn t order too many dishes, but the highlight I was hoping for was the Peking Duck getting torched in front of us. While the fire we had wasn t as dramatic as some other reviews, food was delicious. The staff were amazing, the chef who prepared the duck in front of us, to the people who refilled our drinks and cleared our tables as soon as we were done, we didn t have to flag for their attention. Restaurant itself was clean and had waterfront views.
tasty! The product is stable, the taste is not much different every time, and the environment is comfortable. It would be better if there is a private room. I still look forward to more privacy.
Beautiful environment, unique dishes, highly recommended
First time for me in restaurant, amazing. 5 stars. The duck omg, i recommend this place,
The second time I went there, I felt very good, especially when the sun was setting, enjoying the beautiful scenery and eating delicious food with my family and friends. The lamb chops were very delicious, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. But as a Beijinger, I feel that the roast duck needs to be improved
Great!
The food tasted much worse than the food I ate here two years ago. This time I only took a few bites and it was hard to swallow. The beef ribs were really greasy. I felt a little nauseous at the first bite.
Overall a great experience. Being well known for its Roast Peking Duck, we all agree that it was the best dish out of all plates - definitely worth a try. A few cons appear at its service and atmosphere: a) no wet towel served while eating duck required a lot of touching. The duck was served instantly after order and recommended to eat immediately while it was warm still, leaving us no time to wash hands before eating. Either way, a wet towel is still highly suggested. b) AC was way too cold. No blanket was provided. All the staff who s running around are wearing long sleeves, but your customers aren t always ready. Although most of the dishes were served with a candle heating at the bottom, they still cooled down relatively too fast. The best taste could remain longer. c) the server didn t ask for dietary restrictions. No excuse, a strict NO, unless your dishes are premade and can t adjusted- in that case, this wouldn t be considered fine dining. d) cold plates. Ugh you could do better. e) we didn t feel welcomed. No greetings, lack of smiling, no checking, even hard to get someone s attention, and no one said goodbye before we left. f) dishes werent introduced when they were served. Again, service makes a very important part of experience. g) the overall atmosphere and music are a bit not compatible with the cuisine. But this is just a subjective opinion. With a high price and highly suggested tips requested , I believe you can and should do better Chang An. Looking forward to seeing your improvements till next time. Dietary restrictions: Server did not ask at all.
We booked for 5pm, arrived at 5pm, seated right after. Waited for a duck we RESERVED for a whole hour. I don t understand why the table behind us arrived later got their duck first? If there s a reservation requirement for their Peking duck why is time management so difficult? We didn t order much besides the duck because we have two kids and they are here just for the duck. Last words, very disappointed. I ve came here many times with friends, this is the worst service I ve received.
Fishermen sing at night, enjoy delicious food and beautiful scenery
This restaurant chef and owners should really go to China and learn how to cook Chinese fine dining food. Service is bad as well. I didnt even know xiaolongbao could be so bad before coming to this restaurant.
Good service received here hands down. Food here is mainly focused on fine chinese dinning as you can see from the price on the menu. IMHO the peking roast duck is not worth the price. I can find the same taste in Cantonese restaurants for only half of the price. Duck itself wasn t very juicy and tasted a bit dry and soggy. Other dishes like sczchuan peppers with Beef I find the beef slice is very high quality. Would get that one again next time.
The environment is good and the food is good, but the terrace is too cold! It is recommended that everyone wear more clothes, even in summer , the main thing is to eat cold quickly! Overall, its very good. Ill definitely book a room next time.
It was a great experience dining in Chang An. We came in as a large group for a birthday dinner. The food was great, the sunset view was stunning and our server was top notch. He s able to make our birthday dinner amazing and smooth. We want to give a shout out and a big thank you here to our server - Steven.
So good. You get so much food.
I visited Changan Restaurant yesterday, and I must say, the quality of the dishes has somewhat declined. The roasted duck was quite dry and a bit tough, which was disappointing. I also tried the duck soup wontons, which were pretty average; the broth seemed to be flavored with MSG. It was my first time ordering the Hulu Chicken, and I didn t find it very appealing either. Overall, I was quite disappointed with my experience this time.
It was a fantastic experience. First, the location. Its by Granville Island and if you dine by the window you will have beautiful views. The food was really good. We ordered the lamb, tofu with mushrooms and the peking duck. The peking duck is split into 3 courses: 1st its the skin with sugar 2nd is the meat with 2 kinds of sides and you can wrap on a kind of a rice paper tortilla 3rd you can choose between fried duck or soup. We chose the soup and it was a home run
I went two years ago and had an amazing experience. Brought back a group of friends and we were all very disappointed. We ordered the peking duck along with many other dishes. The food all came out at once, and we were completely rushed through dinner. The food was so overpriced and very small portions. They made last call at 9 o clock on a Friday and rushed us out the door. Nothing was a wow .. Apparently, this is Michelin star and I ve been to many Michelin star restaurants so I don t know how this would make the list.
Peking duck is great. Dish also serves very fast!
Wonderland in downtown Vancouver. Unbeatable location with beautiful views plus free and easy parking space. Pre-ordered duck, served tableside with a fire show . The skin was crispy and the meat was juicy. Highly recommended. The fresh chive mushroom with Chinese yam was simply fabulous!! The stir-fried wild chilli with beef was, to be honest, beyond our expectations, the combination made the beef tender and juicy, but not greasy. We seated at 5 pm, not crowded. The service was remarkably attentive. The servers were knowledgeable about everything from drinks to food. We didnt do a coat check and chose to put our jackets on chairs beside us. The server covered our jackets nicely with our permission. These small things brought our experience to another level!
It is rare to see one place thats tranquil, exquisite, sensational, creative at the same time (many more expensive places fail at this). During my visits here, I can trust any menu item would not disappoint. These qualities makes it a great choice for many occasions. Do try everything.
Price is a bit high for New Year s Eve ($200+ per person before tax and tip), but food quality is good. We were forced to tip, and after paying the bill, they forced us to leave immediately claiming there s a dining time limit. Never heard of this kind of thing before, even at McDonald s, and this really made a bad impression on me after the meal. Honestly, this kind of service is not worth it for the 15% tip, and they have the guts to ask for more tips The only good thing is the food, but the service, nah, not so good
Food is very tasty. Really good Peking Duck!
Great place to have a traditional Chinese cuisine. Tasty food, but veggie are bit oily.
Situated in a lovely area close to the water, the restaurant itself is beautiful. I really enjoy the food and service here. Clearly, its pricey, but I think its worth treating yourself to something nice every now and then.
The best Peking roast duck in Vancouver. Excellent food and atmosphere
Came back for the second time for this month and it was amazing!
We went to this restaurant on the New Year s Day. The food was masterfully prepared. Everything looked like a piece of art. To me, food presentation is half of its taste. The ingredients were fresh and delicious. Just take a look the photos I took and you might get a bit of the taste! Parking: There are two open parking spaces and n indoor parkade. All free. Just remember to get a pass from the restaurant.
The roast duck is pretty good. I particularly recommend the stir-fried sea cucumber and pork. It s very delicious.
After making a reservation, I found that the door was not open. After calling, I only left a message saying that the kitchen was broken and closed. Then why didnt you call to inform me?
Great food and atmosphere.
We had to make a reservation for the duck, and our expectations were extremely high. But when the duck arrived, there was meat on the skin, and the duck meat also separated from the skin! Bad review! ! ! ! !
Ive been here a few times because of the waiters fight with the foreigner. I feel like your waiter is too proud. It shouldnt be. The service quality has deteriorated and tipping has become compulsory.
It s delicious. Thanks to the guy at the front desk for arranging the roast duck! The service is also very good
Not as good as before in every aspect
Amazing Peking Duck - crispy and succulent. One of the best in Vancouver. Other dishes are great as well - Braised abalone and pork bellies and the handmade spinach noodles with truffles oil really stand out. Lovely views. Great services.
THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, EVER. I called in to confirm my OpenTable reservation and to pre-order the roasted duck for a birthday occasion. I was still in shock by the horrible customer service from the male staff who picked up the phone. When I confirmed with him if theres a 15 minutes grace period for the booking (which is a common policy for many restaurants when booking online) in case were late, he gave me a really bad attitude and replied: What the hell is a grace period?! He was just so impatient and rude from the second he answered the phone. If you simply dont understand what the grace period means, you can ask for more clarification. TBH, the food is not even top-notch, now with the service, I just have to cancel my reservation and STAY AWAY from this place.
Great atmosphere and all that. Food taste without factoring the cost is like 3/5. The only thing that saves it from being a 2 is that the duck was quite good and is a 4 or 5 out of 5.
Except for roast duck and gourd chicken, everything else in his restaurant is average. The price is expensive. For 5 people, the mutton steamed bun is even more expensive than the roast duck. But the problem is that it doesn t taste good. The steamed bun is also small and not delicious. The spicy and sour cabbage was not as good as the one I stir-fried myself (it was sour and spicy but had no other taste), the fried pork belly was just so-so, and the barrel-fat beef lost its previous delicious taste. In short, I don t recommend coming here to eat unless you want to eat roast duck. Dont ask me if the price is reasonable. Have you ever tried it at other Yaletown restaurants? Although it is expensive, it is delicious. This restaurant has 5-star service, 2-star food, and one more star for the roast duck, because the roast duck is still delicious after all. Oh, by the way, the waiter even brought us the wrong tea. It was quite fun to pay for one tea and get two tastes.
Food is great, service and atmosphere is good. Slightly pricey for some items. Have dined in many times. But apparently I found out that they have an absolutely atrocious policy of one roasted duck per table. Booked a reservation for 13 people, and was told we could have more ducks if we broke up and sat at different tables. Otherwise its just one duck. No exceptions or accomodations.
Fantastic food, great views and good service! Our server was welcoming and patient. Peking Duck needs to be preordered as it s one of their recommended courses. Perfect dining experience and I will definitely return!
The setting , atmosphere and service was excellent! The only thing was the the Peking duck was kinda over rated, it was kinda dry for me,not up too its standard, the rest of the meal was delicious though! This place is great for formal business dinning, clients would love the whole setting! So I guess it compensate for the Peking duck! Enjoy everyone! Parking: Remember to get your parking pass at the front desk!
3 stars overall = 4 stars for taste and 2 for value and experience. Be prepared for it to be expensive, especially the fish. With such prices, itd be nicer if they did not require you to pre-order the roast duck and theyd allow you to order it upon arrival. We had the live fish, lamb and chicken which were all well-prepared.
This restaurant has a splendid view of False Creek. It has the feel of upscale dining, but the food doesnt necessarily live up to the promise. Except for the incessant saxophone music, the atmosphere is lovely.
Very good dining experience, will come again
Foods are dedicated. View is also really good
very interesting service. decor is perfunctory. some waiter s attitude is horrible. if you want normal standard of the service, STAY AWAY from this restaurant.
My worst dinning experience in 7 years of eating out in Vancouver. Three terrible dishes for $195. The salad appetizer was good, Two mains were very underwhelming. Crispy chicken with Dried Chilli. I had Wagyu fried rice. A few shaving of beef and rice. Certainly not worth $73. My female friends broth arrived with a long hair in it, the server had the audacity to suggest it was her own.. despite it been a completely different color. Maybe we got them on a day night. Overall disappointing experience.
Wonderful location and friendly service. However the duck is not as plump as it suppose to be. Recommended dishes
Great restaurant, great service
The duck was good. Good view during dining
Took my family here and really enjoyed the experience, Peking duck was very authentic, the view by the water was beautiful. Would recommend for special occasions.
I have eaten here a few times, and my personal summary is that four people can eat: roast duck (a must), wooden barrel beef, cold skin, roujiamo, roasted eggplant with green beans, and if it is not enough, add a fried sea cucumber (recommended by the manager). Regardless of the price, these dishes are the least likely to be missed.
This is fine dining for Chinese food. For a combination of location, ambience, and food, this place is much better than the likes of Kirin and Sun Sui Wah, if you are looking for a northern flavour profile. My family came from Beijing, and we thought the Peking duck was surprisingly excellent. I would recommend this place for their duck alone, though their other dishes were also quite good.
Its obviously a special occasion place but worth trying at least once. Pricey but definitely a 4-5 star restaurant. The service was outstanding and extremely professional. The duck with accoutrements was absolutely delicious, which includes the second part of the course where they made an amazing wonton soup. I would also highly recommend the lamb dumplings because they were simply incredible. Overall a great experience.
I have always liked the taste, but the venue is a bit dated, but that doesnt stop me from continuing to like this place.
5 stars for dining experience and food. The duck was a spectacle. Lost stars for price. They charged me $5.50 for a sprite!!! $28 for a pot of tea, and overpriced rice, it s a bit insane. It s definitely one of those luxurious, once in a blue moon overspending experiences. Even the automatic tipping options started at 15% as the lowest option up to 23%. Sorry, this is Canada, and tipping that high for just a party of two sounds absurd. (The service was good though, but it was an empty Tuesday night). If you can get over the price then it s a great experience overall.
The advantage here is that the location is good, the food is okay, and the price is not cheap. At this price, you can enjoy better meals. The waiters attitude needs to be improved. He urges the guests to leave, saying that the next group of guests is waiting and the spicy noodles are not delicious.
Overpriced
Good atmosphere and excellent service, will come back again
Delicious! Unique atmosphere. Tried the pecking duck, lobster, lamb rack, scallop, prawn, wagyu, ribs, gailan, fish. Highly recommended. Best service
It s really awesome. I was asked to wait for 20 minutes to pay the bill. The manager was even more awesome and asked me out. I wish you a prosperous business.
The roast duck in Changan is probably the best in Vancouver. Friends say its better than the one in Hutong.
The best roast duck in Vancouver YYDS!
ChangAn captivates with its breathtaking scenery, creating an enchanting backdrop for a memorable dining experience. When it comes to their culinary offerings, their Peking duck stands out as one of my cherished favorites among the diverse options available in Vancouver. The succulent duck, skillfully roasted to perfection, delivers an irresistible combination of tender meat and crispy skin, leaving a lingering taste that satisfies the senses. Beyond the renowned Peking duck, ChangAn showcases its culinary prowess through their impressive selection of Xian-style snacks. Each bite reveals the careful attention given to flavor and texture, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of the ancient city. Among these delectable offerings, the liangpi, or cold noodles, hold a special place in my heart, with its refreshing taste and delightful interplay of ingredients. Furthermore, during the summer months, I highly recommend indulging in the experience of their inviting patio. Basking in the warm sunshine while savoring the exquisite flavors, one can truly appreciate the harmonious convergence of nature and gastronomy that ChangAn has to offer.
Overall a great experience. The view towards the water is lovely, and the majority of the food was great. The Peking duck skin was incredibly crispy, better done than at Mott 32 or the restaurant on Cambie and 12th for comparison. Other highlights of the meal included the wonton soup and lamb, though the lamb was slightly more cooked than my preference for medium rare. The fish was overdone however, the pork ribs were slightly dry, and the bread to start wasn t very impressive. Also be aware that tea is not included in the meal if you order this. Overall a good experience though; a nice place with regard to ambience, dish presentation, and especially for the Peking duck. Would consider returning for a special event for upscale Chinese food.
Premium looking and tasting Chinese food.
The roasted duck is really small, and the cutting technique results in a bad skin-to-meat ratio. You have to pay extra to have them prepare the leftover meat and bones. We had them make soup from the carcass, which I dont recommend. The soup barely tastes of duck and they put in two very thick skinned wontons (also not made of duck) and this cost 10 per bowl. Overall this is one of those places you go for the view rather than for the food.
It is very authentic and exquisite, suitable for gatherings of many people. Remember to call two or three days in advance to reserve the roast duck.
Quite a 6, I can only say yes. Halfway through eating the spring cake, I found a piece of spring cake with a hair mixed in it. It didnt just fall off, but it was kneaded into the dough and blended together. After talking to the waiter, he said it would be OK to re-order it. I packed it up and took it home yesterday. I opened it today and found that only the portion we had touched was packaged. The new portion was said to be given to us but we had not touched it and then it was not packed together for us. hello? So even if you were trying to save face, you would pay a share and then secretly take it back after the show, right? Are you done with all the good guys? So can we understand that even the spring pancakes we ate might have been served to other tables and then the uneaten ones were given to us. btw The spring cakes are so thick that they can be covered with quilts, and the roast duck meat tastes like it has been cooled and reheated. They say there is a problem with quality control now, and it turns out to be true.
High end feel, and one got to be in the mood for pricey Peking duck! Comes with great show, kids will like it. Nice views all around, easy parking, just need to register yr plate if u park on their ground or another lot directly below.
Help! That lamb chop is really unpalatable. That durian sorbet is really unpalatable. Oh, so disappointing! There are also little bugs flying around. Oh my god, I won t go there again!
Love it
The best roast duck and the best water view in Greater Vancouver are actually at Shaanxi Restaurant, hahaha Parking: Parking is very convenient and sufficient Wheelchair accessibility: convenient
Really a beautiful space right at the water. Great food and ambiance. I found it very authentic Chinese food and many of the patrons were Asian. Refined. I thought the food was great. It can be spicy which I generally like so be advised. The service started strong but at the end we felt a bit neglected. Still, overall, a great place for dinner.
Peking duck is amazing
Came here with my family for Mid-Autumn Festival dinner. The roast duck tastes good, the duck skin is crispy and delicious, and the juice is juicy when you chew it. Use brown sugar to relieve greasiness, leaving only the fragrance. The bolognese is also very fresh, baked with butter that adds a sweet taste, and the flavor is very unique. The fat beef in sour soup also makes people salivate. Of course the price is also very nice. Its just that I dont know a thing. As a Jiangsu person, I know that most of them are not Xian cuisine!
Always good as usual.
You can get a Beijing roasted duck for lunch! It s not only available for dinner. Great Beijing Roasted duck! The master cook was very skilled in peeling a plate full of skin pieces from the duck, yet still leaving a nice piece of skin on almost every piece of duck meat. Duck skin with sugar is delicious! One duck yielded one plate of skin, and two plates of meat. The wonton duck soup was rather tasteless. Should have chosen the store fry version. The cabbage was okay but not grand. Update 1 The roasted duck bone was alright but we were too full to eat much of it. Update 2 Went for the Lychee shrimp. It was sweet sour and a bit spicy. A bit too sweet for my taste. There were 8 shrimps in the dish, and fried lychee. Sautéed nagaimo was alright. None other dishes was as good as the roasted duck. Will certainly come back for the roasted duck. Update3 The pork belly slider was very good! topping
DO NOT RECOMMEND. Ill say again, DO NOT RECOMMEND. We have 8 parties and were told tips will be included. We paid $600 for $550.12 check, the waiter asked if we need a change. A few waiters are as rude as waiters in dim sum place. The inability to be a polite person does surprised me. The Peking duck is overrated and overpriced. We ordered one Peking duck and duck bone soup, the soup has no taste of duck. Essentially, its wonton soup. This business cheats. DO NOT GO!!
Ordered lunch today for 4 guests Beef with pickled chilli ( very good dish and not too suan, well balanced . Braised cabbage (nothing exciting here) Preserved meat with morel mushrooms (noticed no morel mushrooms in the dish only tea tree and shitake asked waiter , first said would check with kitchen , then said tea tree mushrooms were morel mushrooms , showed him photo , then changed and said Chinese menu is correct and English menu is wrong . Offered to remake dish but said it would be same so we declined . Paid a premium and excited to see morel mushrooms as it s a more expensive ingredient. Peking Duck This duck was terrible skin was not crispy and it was very oils as the fat under the skin wasn t rendered . I had better duck at cheaper places like Yan s and New Mandarin .. the skin was soft on this duck . Duck wonton soup Very good dish it was very tasty and wonton wrapper was very thin and duck meat soft and ducky . Service and View was very good but won t be back as price and food aren t very good for what you get . I wouldn t care about the price if the dishes were all consistently good . The signature dish was so bad. I think they may deep fry the duck ..
We went for my dad s birthday this weekend. Such friendly staff, fantastic service, lots of attentive people bringing food and drinks and clean plates between courses. We tried the Peking duck (24 hour notice) which they lit on fire at table side. It s a great fun family thing to do, cost is a little higher, compared to some other Chinese restaurants, but the taste, and quality is top-of-the-line. Other dishes that we ordered were the spareribs, the chicken, rack of lamb, prawns, and sautéed beef. And a whole lobster, which they steamed, then broke up into pieces and pan fried in a house chilli sauce with some vegetables, it was outstanding. We ordered the noodles which you can tell are made in house. They have a large selection of drinks, martinis and wine. All around great night.
High end northern cuisine hiding in our backyard. Hard to complain about anything, and the prices weren t so bad either. The Shanghai smoked fish was fried so well, but I was expecting more fish, and ended up being overwhelmed by the batter. I think the special home made tofu was good but call me a philistine, I couldn t taste anything special about it.
This place has some of the worst service I ve ever experienced in Vancouver. Which is hilarious because they have so much staff, yet they re all useless. Normally I don t care about service, but when it s this bad, it ruins the entire night. Not to mention the food is overpriced and average, if that.
No crispy duck after 8pm... Rest of the food was great! Food
On the water.
Pricing is a little rough. Try to speak Chinese I feel it will be better for you getting service. Beijing duck is quite nice
We came here to celebrate a friends birthday. I felt that the dishes recommended by a manager in a professional way were really delicious. The sour soup and fat beef were recommended. They were really delicious. The roast duck cannot be compared with the ones in China. Compared with the last time I had it, I felt it was a bit inferior and not particularly amazing. All I can say is, I recommend the sour soup and fat beef! ! ! Parking: The parking garage is right in front of the restaurant, when you enter the red the front desk will give you a parking pass which you can display on your windshield.
Posh place for Roasted duck, which they set on fire for a few seconds as part of the presentation. The roasted Duck was just alright for me, whereas every other dish we got came with stronger flavor profiles. Every dish was excellently prepared with care given the price you are paying. Parking is complimentary- just grab a parking slip from inside after you park.
The duck was amazing! It was a lot of food for 3 people. Really enjoyed the presentation and flavor.
Beware of the servers and managers. ALL RUDE. We went there with our oversea friend and we also pretended to be tourist. Because of the service, we paid only 1% tips and the rude server demanded min 15% tips and told us its the Canadian Law to give min 15% tip. Then she brought over her manager where he also demand more tips and this time min 18-20%. I will never go back there again ever.
The quality of the roast duck might have declined a little since 2018, but the service is still top-notch.
I don t know what all the complaint about regarding the amount of food. The three of us reserved the Peking duck and added a vegetable dish and some dumplings. We still had a lot of duck leftover. This was hands down the best meal I had while in Vancouver and the price was not bad at all. We also had drinks. Also, the starter bread and dip was delicious you re supposed to spread the dip on your bread, not dip in the oil! I would definitely recommend this place!
Maybe Im missing something...food was good but not what I was looking for...will try again as I dont like to give bad reviews.....any suggestions on what to order?
A male called Mr Ma is TERRIBLE!
The roast duck is a must try. Ordering in advance is required. Ideal place if you want to have Chinese food in style. Mention you want a table by the window when you make the reservation.
The male manager had a very, very bad attitude. He booked a time and roast duck on a special day because the baby was sleeping, so he changed the time at opentable. He called me and told me that they scrapped a duck because I missed the time! There will be no roast duck for me today, and there is no extra duck! ! They even asked me why I didn t call when I changed the time! If this is the case, please indicate it in opentable. I changed the time in advance and it is not right now. You didnt check the reservation information yourself and you still blame the guest for not calling? Every roast duck restaurant will reserve roast duck. If the customers dont come, there will be others. What will the customers order to scrap it and cheat? The policy was not stated when locating, so you have to call to make changes! The guest didn t know that he had to call in advance to make changes! They refused to provide names when asked, saying that if they didnt go there, they wouldnt be their guests and refused to provide names. I was asked to go directly to the manager. It turns out that I go to Changan on holidays, birthdays and holidays. So disappointed! I will definitely not go there again. Management is terrible! You don t have any problem-solving skills, and you re so awesome that it s like you own the restaurant! Follow-up: Had the family call and listen again to ask if there were any ducks and was told by the same manager that there were extra ducks! There is no extra duck that he told me. It is extremely disgusting. And it doesn t take more than 25 minutes before and after.
been this place many times. authentic Chinese food. my favorite is Peking duck. All other dishes are pretty good as well. Food
Delivered balloons for their guest. Staff was helpful in facilitating the delivery Food looked good
I really like the food at this restaurant in Changan. I highly recommend the spicy stir-fried baby abalone and fat beef bucket
best Chinese food in Vancouver. Outstanding!!
The taste was okay, but we didn t finish much and wanted to pack it away. There was a lot leftover. When we packed it up, we found that it was packed with leftovers from other people s meals . Its not ours at all, its a mistake that even fast food restaurants dont make. Why
very delicious
The view was nice but everything I ordered was so greasy and salty. There was also lots of flies and mosquitoes at the entrance
A bit different place for Chinese cuisine
Keep up the standard as always. The geographical location is unique, and I love the beef in wooden barrels.
Food is ok for special occasions. Service is what you expected at this level of dining experience. Overall a little overpriced because the food is not that tasty
Good service! I think Chang An does a good job of encapsulating traditional Chinese dishes, such as chicken (goji, red date) soup and white fungus dessert soup
Very nice but very expensive Beijing duck, great location on Granville Island with a nice view. I would not come here often, but good for when you want to impress.
Food amazing. Service was really good. Our server was very helpful. Went with a large group, all had good time and enjoyed the food. Itll cost a bit but youll be pleased. Duck, lychee prawns, wagu fried rice, duck soup just some of the great dishes.
The roasted duck( )is very good. The skin is crispy and the meat is tender. The chef s slicing skills are outstanding. I love their homemade tofu with dipping sauce. The tofu is tender and bouncy with the natural aroma of soy bean. It tastes clean and delicious. Strongly recommend! The starter is very good. Their chili sauce is very delicious and MO(typical bread in Xi an) has a very crispy crust. Delicious! The other dishes are mediocre at best. The chili sauté beef is so so. Beef is not hand cut which I am not happy about. They just try to the same pre packaged beef cut for multiple dishes. This is not what I would expect for such high price. The mushroom soup is clear but not umami enough. Shanghai style smoked fish is not good. The smoke flavor is not strong enough, and it is way too sweet and salty. The crispness is impressive though! The BiangBiang noodle is not good. The noodle does not have the same thickness and the chili is not aromatic. And way too sour. Even I make a better one. Basically none of the dishes makes me feel like ordering again.
I ve been there for several times ~ I m not the fan of Beijing BBQ duck, even their BBQ duck tastes good But I like the view and service, and the food is yammy and pretty.
Closest Peking duck experience to Beijing that Ive had in Vancouver. The fire show where they present the duck is flashy and unnecessary, but some may enjoy the fanfare, and it certainly doesnt take anything away from the delicious duck. First course is carved tableside and served with the standard crepes, hoisin, green onions and cucumbers, but also coarse sugar, plum sauce, and pear, which gives a nice variety. Other standout dishes include the pan fried Angus beef with house special sauce and a spicy soup with fish. Theres parking available for customers, a small lot at street level, but also a small underground lot (entrance to the lot is close to the restaurant entrance). Parking: parking available for customers, a small lot at street level, but also a small underground lot that is easily missed (entrance to the lot is close to the restaurant entrance)
Excellent food and service
Bad dining experience for the price. No AC for the seat by the corner. Felt like 28-30 degrees. Dining while having a sauna.
Great place, great food. The price is expensive, but worth it. The other guests were loud... There was this guy, he gave an hour long speech about business management. We all heard him loud and clear..... All night long.
Nice place for priming
Roasted duck was very good. Very authentic chinese food.
The price is expensive
The 1st time visit after pandemic. You have to try their roasted duck, advanced book (at least 1-day prior) is required, its superb delicious, pear slices replaced by melon slice, matching with strawberry jam instead of soy source. The others cousine are also above average, such as mushroom braised deep fried bean curd, soybean stewed pork, pork breaded, etc.. If you like, you can also order some different flavored of noodle to share... awesome..!!
Pricey but great new experience. Food has excellent creative tastes and flavors. Would repeat.
High quality food and dining experience that is reflected in it s price as well.
everything is good except you need to book the Peking duck in advance
- Good view on the patio. Customers can enjoy the sunset and dinner at the same time - Many parking beside the restaurant. Customers do not have to worry about packing when they get there - Service is excellent. The servers are friendly and have a great attitude to every customer - Food quality is okay. Beijing duck is a must-try dish, and the rest is alright - Food is not cheap there. Expect over 70 dollars per person.
Very fancy and great atmosphere. We enjoyed watching chef cut duck.
Overall, the price is exaggerated. Two people ordered 4 dishes, and none of them had quality soups. The soups were all terrible. It s hard to find such a cost-effective dine-in restaurant in Vancouver. It s not worth a visit. It s not worth eating. Just look at the other good reviews. I know how to spend money (I know this is disgusting) to deceive major consumers to gain points. Several friends around me went to eat at it and they all said it was a rubbish restaurant and the environment was not delicious.
A pleasant dining experience at Chang An. Roasted duck is our focus of this dinner and it didn t disappoint us at all. This dish alone worth the visit. There is room for improvement(such as how the lamp rack was prepared) but overall chang an is a great choice for fine dinning, especially Peking style roasted duck.
My favorite roast duck restaurant in Vancouver. The food is more expensive, but the decoration and environment are great.
Hugh quality Chinese food (focus on xi an cuisine and Peking duck) with a waterfront view! Every dish was exquisite. Pricey, yes, but the service was also great which is rare for Chinese restaurants. The (gourd chicken) and king mushroom casserole were surprisingly good. Don t forget to reserve the duck!!
I have never given a restaurant such a low score! Its really disappointing. If it werent for the managers excellent service, I really wouldnt want to give it a star. Please ask the restaurant to train the waiters. Although the food is not terrible, it is not as delicious as before. The crispy lamb chops were not crispy, and the meat was very woody and tasted wooden. But the star I gave it has nothing to do with the food in the restaurant, because it s not just that the quality of the food has dropped, the key is the service attitude! ! ! First of all, when the waiter was clearing the table, he hung the standing lamp on the table and hit my feet. I expressed my understanding because I knew it was not intentional. Dont be so anxious to clear the table next time. I was not in such a hurry. Want to leave. What I want to focus on is that if I came to your restaurant to eat, not the buffet, I don t know why the waiter left after putting the water on the table shelf. Just put a little bit forward and put it in my hand. Where can I go? This way I can get there by myself Why do you have to wait for your manager to come back and pour water? After all, this is a high-end Chinese restaurant. I hope the quality of the waiters can match the quality of this restaurant.
Really love the people here, the Peking duck and the beautiful setting. This restaurant is truly such a hidden gem. Definitely reserve ahead and reserve the duck because it sells out!
I loved the Peking duck which was served with a flat pancake crepe/wrapper. The skin which is to be dipped in sugar was real good. The presentation of the duck was also nice: it was brought table side and flambéd before it was sliced. They serve the duck with Hoisin sauce and peach jam. Access via Granville street (under the Granville bridge/99). Not in Granville Island!
Sub-par service and food was average, the A5 wagyu fried rice is absolutely horrible
Good ingredients, fine workmanship, excellent service
As most reviews here mention, you come here for the nice sunset view and Peking duck! Without a doubt, in my opinion, better than Mott 32, China Gate, Neptune, etc This is because they prepare your duck assuming you show up on time and order in a timely fashion, the longer you delay the duck, the quicker it will dry out. Otherwise, everything else is way overpriced! For instance, almost $30 for that small vegetable dish! If it was brought out in larger portion, I could ve accepted the pricing, but that is a portion for two or three people. Go there to try it once for yourself and you can decide if it was worth it!
I cant sing enough praise for the restaurant. Ive eaten at many high end Chinese restaurants around the world, and Chang An really is at the caliber of good service that I have not found anywhere in North America. I brought a good friend who was out of town to Chang An and they did not disappoint. In fact, they impress both of us by a mile! The reception staff had actually relayed my requests and the wait staff lead was able to execute everything to a T, right down to the delivery of what he said to our table. They served their special tea, a passionfruit pudding and sticky rice dessert as part of the experience. We preordered a duck that was just right - not overly fatty, crisp and sliced at table side thinly. We also ordered the crispy mushroom casserole, a hot and sour marinated beef and beef tendon with abalone sauce. My only dislike were that portions are small relative to the price, which is certainly higher than similar institutions in the city. We got a great view and the evening was just lovely. Will return and also a top choice for any out of town guests as they really deliver on quality and service.
Had a okay meal but it was HORRIBLE SERVICE and the server lied to us to get more tip The waiter didn t ask us or check up on how we were doing, when I asked for recommendations he said everything is good and when I asked about the rice he said yeah we have rice and we have noodle . Overall he had a very dismissive tone? And rude. Afterwords we tipped like 5% (out of a $230 bill). And then one of the younger waiters came up to us and said Hey if you ordered the duck the gratuity has to be 15% - my partner and I BOTH heard this He handed us the machine and said can you pay 27$ more . Afterwards I asked for clarification because I didn t see that policy on their website. That s when he backtracked and said Oh it s not our policy, just the standard in Canada he literally lied to us about the 15% going to the guy who served and cut the duck for us, and handed us the machine to demand us pay more. He also backtracked and said that the gratuity goes to the waiter. Right after i paid and asked more questions. Asked to speak with the manager, and the manager said that the waiter told him that he asked us if there was anything wrong with the service, and then suggested a higher amount. WHICH IS UNTRUE! Afterwards they said that they can t refund us the tip but will just give us a complimentary appetizer??? The waiter literally lied to us, fabricated a fake duck server gratuity policy, shoved a credit card machine in our face and entered in an amount he decided on. This is a very nice restaurant, I can afford to tip, but this service and experience is just horrible. There are many different restaurants in Vancouver.
Bad service, oily duck skin
The best peking duck compared to the ones Ive tried in Vancouver ( Den & Quan Ju De Beijing , Red Star, Dynasty, Sun sui wah and Mott 32) Great service and view! Vegetarian options: They have few Vegetarian options. Tofu+mushroom was so good!
What a speechless and ridiculous restaurant, I will never go there again. Other guests who want to go should also be careful about the overbearing terms and conditions regarding Changan Roast Duck. I made a reservation for 5:30. The guest I invited was late because of something else, but the waiter came to me at 6:00 and told me that the roast duck was ready. Would you like to serve it first? I asked if you could postpone it for me a little longer. The guests havent arrived yet. The waiter said to ask the manager to take a look at it for me. The manager came over after a while and told me that because I had ordered the roast duck in advance, it had to be served now, and I had to pay even if I didnt eat it. I said okay, you can pack it for me and I can take it away, and we can order other dishes when the guests arrive. The manager said that we couldnt take it out, and we didnt do takeout, so we had to cut it up and serve it now. I said, is it okay if you serve it to the table and I take a bite and then pack it away? The manager still said no. I was stunned when I heard this, and I said you go ahead, we are full, and I will take it away after cutting it. The manager said that the restaurant wouldnt be able to order roast duck for me in advance. I said it didnt matter and I wouldnt come back again. Then the manager left without looking back...Does the restaurant want me to eat half of the roast duck before seeing the guests, or does the restaurant want me to let the dishes cool before serving them to the guests? I also specifically said that we should just serve takeout and wait for people to come before ordering other dishes. I didnt say that I wouldnt pay the bill or make unreasonable demands. Instead, your restaurant acted like I broke your rules? In the past, I spent an average of 200 to 300 yuan per person every time I came here. Today, I was so angry that I left the store because of a roast duck. I was really speechless. In terms of food, environment and service, which one in Quanjude or Saner Gongguan is not better than yours in Changan, not to mention there are so many cost-effective roast duck restaurants. Today I got to see the management of this restaurant. Maintaining the roast duck is more important than protecting the guests. Then I wish you more punctual customers in the future and help you save some money.
Overpriced for what you get. Server had the audacity to ask for more tip and wanted me to tip on the after-tax amount. Peking duck flaming is a gimmick. Small portions for price. Service is average. Expect to pay at least $70 per person. Realistically more like $80. Pu Er tea starts at $28/pot. White rice is $6/bowl. Ambience is nice, great views. Restaurant is relatively quiet. Dining area is very clean. Presentation of food is good.
I really enjoyed my two visits to this restaurant. However, it is not the best place for the duck. There are some restaurants in the lower mainland that cooks their duck better. However, they don t compare to the professional service, attentiveness, and restaurant atmosphere. It s is definitely a great place for a date, small event, and family functions. It s right beside the water so the view is amazing, especially during a nice sunny day. Their other dishes are quite good but expensive. Is it worth it, I d say it s up for personal opinion. But, I would return for special events. Parking: They provide parking passes
The Peking Duck is still the best in Vancouver. The rest of the dinner was also well done. The service needs improvement if considered as a high end restaurant but its not bad either. Atmosphere is good because of the location, but space seems to be verily tight given it is more of an high end place. Parking: Good parking spaces.
The roast duck and crab are both good, but this dessert is not delicious. The service is OK but there are no private rooms. There was a birthday party at the back table and it was very noisy when sitting in the lobby.
Washrooms and kitchens are very clean and tidy. Ambience is very nice. Restaurant is quiet and sitting is very comfortable. A good place to have rendezvous and enjoy dinner. Foods are low sodium, low chicken broth mix and low sugar. But oily. The taste doesnt WOW me. The Changan Gourd chicken tastes worse than KFCS chicken. The chef doesnt know what kind of alcohol he use to flame the roasted duck when was asked. (Need more product training!) Service is generally good Definately a place you pay for settings and ambiance, but not for food. It s rare to see Chinese restaurants keeping their bathrooms and kitchens so clean. (Other restaurants can learn from this example). The restaurant has a good atmosphere and is very quiet. It gives people a very comfortable feeling. It is a good place for a low-key gathering. The taste of the food is nothing special. The food is not salty and the chicken powder is not used much. It is just a bit oily. Changan Yipin Gourd Chicken was terrible, dry and tasteless. Money wasted! Longjing tea is very light and has no fragrance. The chef didnt know what wine he used to sear the duck when asked. The service is up to the standards of mainstream restaurants. Parking is also very convenient.
This price and this amount of food. . .
The dish has a relative taste, not as pure as eating at the place of origin. Particularly, the chef is very skillful in slicing the roast duck dish.
I really wanted to love this place because I read reviews that it was fine dining and Im a big fan of Chinese food but to be honest, it did not taste any more special or better than what I usually have in and around Vancouver, so I left a little disappointed. I do not think it was worth the price but the service is far superior than what you receive at the usual Chinese restaurants. In summary, if you want to pay more to get much better service at a Chinese restaurant then I would suggest this restaurant, but if youre going there for better tasting Chinese cuisine, I think you will leave disappointed.
Best Peking duck I ve ever had. Need to make reservations for the duck in advance. The duck skin is crispy and light, not greasy at all. Crepes are perfectly steamed, very thin and lightweight. The entire experience is amazing. Yes other dishes are overpriced but for the Peking duck itself I think it s worth it!
Great northern Chinese food. Peking duck is authentic. Then lamb chops are my favorite. But I do prefer canto style Chinese food better. The location of the restaurant is amazing too. Reminds me of a restaurant in Paris but I would only suggest people come here for business style dinners. It s kinda over priced.
Excellent spot for Peking duck. In addition to being one of the best tasting ducks in the city, the flaming display is corny but always a treat. Some other dishes are good like the braised beef and the cold chilli noodles. Great spot to bring a group and order a few things to share.
This place has delicious food and I almost let the reviews that talk about it being overpriced (and the food not being exceptional) get in the way of me trying it! So I decided to write a review to share how much I liked it. I found the food really interesting while still being authentic Chinese dishes (but probably modified for the local tastes - I am most familiar with the milder Cantonese flavours and found the food here to be very balanced for my palate even though the spicing is from a different cuisine. The flambé of the duck might not accomplish anything besides showmanship and fun. I liked it and it s memorable. Both the chilli crab (served with a wonderful selection of veg and surprise crinkle fries!) and fried eggplant were standouts! Lamp chops were great. With our big table of 8, we were very satisfied and spent less than $100 per person before tip. I ve been spending way more than that at non Chinese restaurants without having such delicious and diverse foods. This is a restaurant to be fancier like fine dining. Service was excellent. We had cocktails which were priced like at other higher end restaurants rather than buying the very pricey pots of tea (too accustomed to getting Chinese tea cheap or free). I didn t like my Blue Sky that much but would try some others next time. I suspect that people who didn t like their experience as much just didn t order well or didn t have anything to compare the restaurant to or perhaps the chefs changed or something. Not cheap. Worth it. And if you check in and get a pass, there s free parking!
Most of their stir fries are pretty good. But the peking duck is the worst I have ever had. Fir those comments who recommend the duck, they haven t had a real one
The location (on the water), the service, food, everything is just perfect.
