Celebrated Indian restaurant offering inventive cuisine. Customers can book a table ahead or walk in to our restaurant. Vij's also offer Private Dining options. Groups can book one of our Private Rooms via our website.
Our dinner at Vij's restaurant on Friday night was nothing short of extraordinary. The food was out of this world, probably the best Indian cuisine we've ever had. We started with the lamb popsicles, which were succulent and bursting with flavor. The butter chicken and naan were equally impressive, easily the best we've ever tasted. you can tell the chicken had a flame grilled flavour, something not done at other places. The samosas, highly recommended, came with a delicious channa accompaniment. What made the evening even more special was the personal touch from the owner, Vij himself. He introduced himself at our table and checked in to see how our night and meals were going, adding a warm and personal touch to the experience. We will definitely be visiting again when we are back in town. Highly recommended!
This was our first time here, and the chef came to the tables to greet everyone. The staff was very thoughtful, and the food was delicious. I have nothing negative to say about this place—my boyfriend and I really, really liked it.
It was cramped and crowded when we visited. The space between the tables is very limited. They gave us some cheap complimentary (coloured)fried stuff. We didn’t even touch it. The vegetarian gravy and sag paneer were ordinary. Starter and the breads were decent. Their service, friendliness, follow ups were excellent.
Amazing place. We went on a date to try Indian food for the first time and we loved it. The place is really nice but the service is really amazing. The waiters were really attentive and friendly and the owner came twice to our table to check how we were doing. The lamb and desert were our favourites We really recommend it.
We visited this restaurant for the first time last night to celebrate my birthday, and it was an amazing experience! Chef Vij was there, personally greeting each table. The servers were fantastic, and the food was full of flavor with perfectly sized portions. Everything was wonderful! Beautiful restaurant! We’ll definitely be back! 🇮🇳♥️
Our first visit at Vij’s was a great experience. They have a great selection of unique drinks and appetizers to enjoy before the main course. I’ve never had such delicious goat meat as I’ve had here, and the paneer korma is 10/10. The rose ice cream for dessert was to die for. If you’re looking to enjoy Indian cuisine from a well thought out menu and a great atmosphere, this restaurant is the place for you. I can’t wait to eat here again.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Vij's in Vancouver with some friends from Ottawa, and I must say it was an absolutely fantastic experience. Not only was the food unbelievably delicious, but the service was top notch as well. Vikram, the owner, was there and his personal touches and conversations really made the night unforgettable. Despite our guest’s efforts to convince him to move to Ottawa, he made us feel right at home in his restaurant. The dishes we tried were all bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. The presentation of Indian flavors with modern twists was truly something special. I highly recommend trying as many dishes as possible but the pork belly spoons and the better chicken - they were both stand-out dishes. Overall, I cannot recommend Vij's enough. If you're in Vancouver and looking for a memorable dining experience, look no further. The food, service, and atmosphere all come together to create a truly unforgettable evening.
Incredible! We brought our 4 year old and they were wonderful! Chef Vij stopped by our table several times to chat with us and our son. The food was phenomenal! Table mechanics were excellent and when we needed extra time with our son, they were completely understanding. Also, their wine list is lovely and the restaurant is somehow gorgeous and casual.
great tasting food, but slow service. atmosphere depends on where you get seated as it is a large restaurant where only some parts have good atmosphere
I did order Shahi Paneer and Lamb Lollipops. I felt like Shahi Paneer is way too saltier than expected and I told server as well and she said it is supposed to be like that. I couldn t eat Shahi paneer and did take out for that and brought it home. I warmed it up and pictures are attached. The amount of oil completely it has is insane. If we are paying a premium price at least put some butter or clarified butter or at least less oil. Snacks were ok but main course I will give 1 star.
I had really high expectations from everything I ve heard about Vij s but was left just a little disappointed. The chicken vindaloo was incredible and perfectly cooked but the lamb roganjosh was dry and not tender at all. Prices are also super high here for what you get. One thing I really appreciated is that the owner, Vikram, is awesome and takes time to greet people and ask about the food. The service was top notch and every staff member was wonderful! Overall I enjoyed my experience here
The best Indian cuisine in Vancouver. Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options Food : 5/5 |
Went for an anniversary dinner tonight after seeing on the Michelin recommended list for Vancouver. Frankly speaking- this place is significantly overrated. It s cramped, loud, service is quite poor. Waiters/servers were mixing up tables. Portions were quite small, etc Also for perspective: They don t know how to make parathas! We ordered stuffed aloo paratha and the center was all dough with the stuffing all on out the side. Even I can make a better one than their Michelin recommended chefs tbh. This is a very basic Indian food item that everyone should know how to make-especially if cooking professionally. Only positive is that the menu had some interesting plates-Alpaca biryani, jackfruit, gunpowder pork (not actual South Indian gunpowder though, just the name). Always wanted to try Vij s, now having tried it, won t go back nor will recommend. Disappointed overall.
The food and drinks, the staff, the ambiance and the owner are amazing! Hands down one of the best meals we have had. Thank you Vikram for your hospitality!
This restaurant is pure magic. I have eaten all over the world and this was one of my all time favorite restaurant experiences. Vij is a true restauranteur who clearly cares about all of his diners and his staff. I couldnt recommend this place enough! If youre in Vancouver, you must come here!
Very disappointed! We have had much better food in N.E. Calgary, as well as on the trains in India. Unfortunately I was able to give Vikram feedback (way too salty on some dishes and bland on others) and he quickly dismissed it (instead of being humble and apologetic). Don t waste your time and money.
All food is spicy and heavily seasoned, this food might not be for everyone. My husband loved it but I didn t enjoy anything
The food is really good. Maybe a bit too expensive.
Kid-friendliness: We took our two kids to Vijs when we were in Vancouver for the night. They were the only two kids (3 and 3 months) in the restaurant. The staff was AMAZING! They were so attentive and genuinely loving to my 3 year old - talking to her constantly, asking her about the food and what she likes. The food and atmosphere is wonderful and I would 100% recommend, but the service and genuine kindness of the staff exceeded all expectations.
Very tasty food, good service. Vikram, the owner, coming to greet at your table was a nice touch. Bit pricey.
Delicious food, great atmosphere, and Vij is a Rockstar!!
The first thing that comes to mind is .. Wow! From the friendly service, to the amazing atmosphere.. my husband and I were left happy and full. The warm, buttery dishes were cozy and satisfying . Overall we absolutely loved our night eating here. Recommended to all.
Packed tighter than a mall foodcourt. Definitely would not recommend for a nice dinner, can barley talk to the person across from you as the dining area is so poud and filled to bursting with people. Food was standard indian food, nothing special and certainly not worth the price.
Used the private room upstairs for a work event, food and service excellent!
Great food, good service but very expensive. Just shy of $100 for one person (including 1 drink and tip). For that price the value isnt there since there are so many great Indian food restaurants out there for less than half the price whose food is comparable.
It was amazing experience, we ordered butter chicken and couple of other dishes too, even the chef came to our table multiple times to know how everything was , food was amazing and soo flavourful, they even made custom drinks for us
We had family style dinner and managed to try a lot of different dishes. This was not the best indian food I ever had since dishes were hit and miss, but what stands out is an amazing service and hospitality we received. I really liked: Paneer Korma (mushrooms there so good), VIKRAMs FAVOURITE SNACK( the sauce is to die for), Lamb Popsicles(great sauce and the meat without a strong lamb flavour), rice pudding was good Ghee Parathas - had really strong ghnee taste, Chicken Curry was not to my taste, Chai was waaaay to sweet, I was not able to drink it. But, overall it was a really good experience, thank you.
Highly recommend. We had such a wonderful experience at Vij s. The food was amazing and the service was so warm and friendly. As parents of young children, it s hard to have a night out, but this restaurant is definitely worth booking the babysitters to come enjoy an evening of delicious lamb and naan and chai tea. We can t wait to come back.
An incredible culinary experience!
Best Indian Food I ever had Vegetarian options: There are many vegetarian options
Vijs used to be one of my favourite restaurants when easing people into Indian food. The staff and atmosphere are still great, but the price has gotten so ridiculously expensive that I can no longer recommend anyone go there. The lamb lollipops used to be one of my favourite dish at Vijs. However, in our recent visit they have effectively tripled the price and halved the portions from just a few years ago (not to mention the naan and/or rice you have to order on top of that). I guess that mortgage for such a big space is hitting them hard.
I recently had a fantastic night out with friends at Vij s. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed evening with great company. The Indian food was absolutely delicious every dish was rich in flavor and beautifully presented. The drink menu was also impressive, with creative cocktails that complemented the food perfectly. The service was attentive and friendly, making the whole experience even better. Vij s is definitely a must-visit spot in Vancouver for anyone looking to enjoy exceptional Indian cuisine in a vibrant setting. I m already looking forward to my next visit!
Tasty but incredibly overpriced. The dishes should be $15 each at most, not $30 or more. We ordered over $200 worth of takeout and it barley fed a party of four people. Absurd. Will not return.
Incredible food and service, Vikram gave us an experience that will bring us back many more times.
First time trying Vij s! Have heard good things about this spot for ages and finally tried it for dinner. Easily made a reservation online. Service was prompt and courteous. I liked the crunchy snacks to start. I got the mango lassi and it was really good. I also got the chai, and thought it was a little watered down and not spiced enough. As for the food, we got the butter chicken with rice and naan, as well as the pakora. The pakora was crunchy and I liked the sauce. The butter chicken was nice and rich but a little salty for my liking. Overall the food was just okay for the price point.
Excellent Quality Indian food, We had Lamb and Goat Dishes. One of the best lamb hands down on the planet if not in Canada. Its amazing to see Chef Vikram Vij and his passion and care to his customers and his humbleness. Boys and Girls, This is by far the best you going to get to for Indian food in Canada. Try everything there. And there great service.
We came to Vancouver for our 10th anniversary and met some friends from California. We love Indian food and decided to go to Vij s for our dinner. The food was very tasty, and the servers were very attentive. It was great to see Vikram so involved in his restaurant and interacting with the guests. Dietary restrictions: Most of the menu is Gluten Free
Awesome food, yummy cocktails, great host,
We had a reservation for four at six o clock on a Wednesday. The restaurant was not busy but by six thirty it was almost full. Our waiter was very attentive and soon after our arrival we were greeted by Vikram himself. We had pakora and samosa then Vij s chicken curry, Better chicken curry, goat curry, lamb popsickles, rice and garlic ginger naan. Everything was wonderful with deeply developed taste profiles, and the serving sizes were generous - enough to eat hearty and still have enough to take home for another meal or two. We thoroughly recommend Vij s! Dietary restrictions: One of our party is severely gluten intolerant but there are a wide range of GF choices and all GF items are prepared in separate section.
A stellar gem of Vancouver! Our Uber driver tried to recommend a different Indian restaurant but he had no concept of what Vijs is - a one of a kind experience with some of the best and unique flavors you can imagine with friendly service and Chef Vikram himself checking in on tables. Well worth the Michelin guide mention and not to be missed when in Vancouver!
Best Indian Ive had since moving to Canada 12+ years ago. Good, attentive service too.
I visited this restaurant with my son recently. We ordered panner for starter. Only r cubes of panner with watery gravy. My son ordered palak panner. It was horrible taste. No spices at all in palak panner. Ordered Dessert Gulabjamun rose something not good taste. Also too much bothered by staff when we were eating, it was irritating every minute.Wasted money.
The food at Vij s Restaurant is the best Indian food I have eaten. The staff were friendly and had great suggestions about the menu. I loved the whiskey sour as it really stood out with beautiful colours and design on the top of the drink. The food was so flavourful! Chef Vikram Vij walked around the room talking to guests which really was nice to see the owner of his restaurant really making everyone feel at home at his restaurant. I will definitely be back!
We had the most incredible experience at Vijs. The entire staff treated us like family and that is even more wonderful as we brought our one year old. The food was sensational, hot and tasty. Portions were lovely and we recommend bringing a group so that you can order many dishes and share. We cannot recommend this restaurant enough!
Great food and service. Our first time here as a family. Loved the flavors and presentation. Great service and atmosphere
I dont know how this restaurant got on the Eater and Michelin guides. The restaurant may be pretty, but the food and service provided are not worthy of a spot on either of those guides. The curries were bland and overpriced. Disgrace to Indian cuisine because there was zero flavor and only color. It also felt like they were trying to turn over tables quickly because the staff was rushing everything. The server would stand at the table tapping his foot and try to rush ordering. He also walked away at one point. The restaurant is falsely advertising that they are a Michelin level restaurant by putting a Michelin 2023 sign on the door. Not worth it, wish I could get a refund, and shouldve went to a different restaurant. If you want to have excellent Indian food in Vancouver, go to SULA! There are 3 location and they are levels above Vijs. I dont understand how Vijs is recognized on the guides and Sula is not. Again this restaurant is lame and not worth it. Not actual Indian Food!
Delicate flavors, surprised to see gravy appetizers. Chicken fry came with butter chicken gravy and lamb kebabs served with dal . Typical westernized indian food.
Wow Vij s was incredible! We came here on recommendation from some family, and I am so glad we did! This was one of the best meals I ve ever had. Everything was delicious, especially the samosas. We also enjoyed the palak paneer and the cauliflower koftas. I can t wait to come back again! Vegetarian options: Cauliflower koftas, samosa, palak paneer & others
Ambiance, music, and decor are quite nice at the restaurant. Their service is fantastic as they come to your table often to make sure everything is alright. Food just was not it. Ordered the Better Chicken, Lamb Kebabs, tandoori naan, and goat curry. Better Chicken had to be the most disappointing dish after I saw the review from daily hive on tik tok. Chicken was not tender, didn t have much garlic and overall lacked flavour aside from tomato. For the cost of $31 it s a travesty. Lamb kebabs were okay with the smoky taste but nothing special. Naan was atrocious, lacked garlic and did not even taste like it was cooked in the tandoor.
Indian food for senior citizens. Bland and boring. Been here 5 times because my friends like it. I dont get it. The food is not particularly good. The food looks great and tastes boring. Earls has better indian. So many good Indian restaurants in the lower mainland this is not one. Its just not good food. Totally overrated. Blah. Hope I never have to go again. Its the white spot of Indian. Mind you Im ok with white spot.
Had an amazing experience there. Delicious food with a warm environment. Great service too.
Wow! What an amazing experience all around. We walk into the restaurant and were immediately greeted by Vij himself! I was a little star struck at first because I d only ever seen him on TV. We had reservations for the rooftop patio and were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful it was up there. Vij checked on us throughout our evening to make sure we had everything we needed and were enjoying our meals. He was so kind and so gracious, it really elevated the whole experience. We will definitely be back! Thank you so much, Vij!
Dinner with a friend who is a great patron of Vancouver restaurants (including Vijs on many occasions). The meal was not the norm; it was late, lousy, cold. When friend politely said something, Vikram was appallingly rude, accused him of being dishonest about the quality of the meal. I was shocked. Thought it was a very unkind manner in which to treat someone. Arrogant and rude. Wont go back.
I don t leave many reviews but felt compelled to leave one due to the questionable (memorable?) experience I had. We had reservations for 7 pm. By 7:20, I was a bit tired of standing so we took a seat at the bar and had complimentary chai and complimentary snack that they serve to their guests. I was appreciative of this. You can see by my photo time stamp of the snack that it was taken 22 minutes after the 7pm reservation (you can also tell the pic was taken at the bar because the lighting in the pic is much brighter than the other two pics taken in the dining area). We didn t get seated for a while after, perhaps 730. No big deal, I understand at times that places can get busy and things get held up. Once we got seated, we ordered some starters, a side, and a couple entrees. The server was very pleasant and helpful and so were the wait staff. The starters arrived at 7:58 (28 min after seating), no big deal and they were quite tasty. After eating them, we waited quite a while for our entrees (veg thali and beef curry). Time stamp of beef short rib curry is 50 min after receiving prawn starter. Our entrees were room temp at best. My date made a comment and the owner arrived and mentioned they don t get started on the entree until after the starter is served. I do think 50 min to get the entree to our table after serving the starter is excessive but I didn t want to debate about that. He graciously returned the thali and returned with a hot one in less than 5 minutes. Towards the end, my date expressed his displeasure that we had reservations at 7, didn t get seated for 30 minutes, food service was too long, and that the food was not hot and that the beef was dry. In my limited experience in the customer service industry, it s best to just let the wookie win as they say. No point in arguing, just leave it be. Unfortunately, the owner brought the hostess to our table and said that we only waited 20 minutes, not 30 and called my date a liar, which escalated things because no one wants to be called a liar. I don t blame the hostess for saying 20 minutes, she deals with a lot of customers and it was busy, how is she to remember every detail. None the less, my snack pic shows 7:22 and we didn t get seated for at the very least 5 minutes later. I ve never been so mortified in my life to see an owner of a restaurant calling a customer a liar which is why I was prompted to write a review showcasing time stamp of pics to prove our wait time. Needless to say, we won t be back and I know Vij is happy that we won t be :( Left 2 stars for the hostess and wait staff for having to witness the uncomfortable debate between the owner and my date.
Amazing space, food, and staff! The best!
Service was terrible to begin with but they listened to our concern and quickly overcame and provided a solution which was great. But service shouldn t be like that to begin with. Vij s claim to be not a traditional Indian restaurant as it is a little french Inspired Indian cuisine which I appreciate but the combination has to taste good, it was indeed very weird. Lamb Kebab s were too spicy, didnt see any french inspiration there instead they were served with tamarind sauce which to be honest I tried 5 times to see if I am missing something, the combination just wasnt for me. Chicken schnitzel s were very bland, the butten chicken sauce was good but the chicken was too oily. For the mains, we got dal makhni, malai kofta, an lamb popsicle, dal was below average, malai kofta tasted like kadi pakora, lamb popsicles, once again a weird combination of curry. Rice and breads were fine but what do you eat them with, we didnt even finish. I asked them to get us smaller portions of all the three deserts, mango kulfi was good, rose kulfi with gulab jamun was extremely sweet and rice pudding was average, nothing special.
Given the Indian food standards in Vancouver, the food was very average.
Amazing bar program and great wine list!
Mmmmm
Placed an order for takeout and was told I would be called when it was ready in 20 minutes. After 30 minutes with no call I went to pickup my order and it was just sitting there so already not happy. After getting home I opened the bag to even more disappointment, the portions were extremely small for an order of butter chicken, rice, and naan. Most places this order will feed 2 or more people whereas this portion for all items wasn t enough for one and mind you the order was over $40. To make matters worse, the naan was bland and the butter chicken was all spice and NO flavour. Very disappointed.
I had an amazing experience at Vij s Restaurant! I ordered the pakora, veg thali, and Vikram s favorite snacks, and the taste was absolutely fantastic no doubt about it! Every dish was bursting with flavor and cooked to perfection. The customer service was also top-notch, with Vij himself and his team going above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking for incredible food and outstanding service!
Extremely well serviced restaurant with amazing Indian food. The food is not your typical Punjabi food, which is really refreshing. Great vegetarian options!
Best tasting kabab ever
Hairball baked into the Naan. Food was medicore at best, restaurant was underwhelming, carpet was grimey. I honestly do not understand the hype. Go to Surrey, where you cant throw a stone without hitting some superb restaurants! To make things worse, one of our party received a Naan that had a ball, yes a BALL of hair baked into it! Very disappointing.
What a sublime experience at Vij s! The ambience on the rooftop patio was absolutely delightful - exquisitely decorated. And the food was unbelievably good! We had the portobello mushroom curry and the paneer for starters - both were absolutely delicious. The highlight was the tiffin - dal and Gobi aloo served in a tiffin box. Simple, and so tasty - reminded me of home. We had the mango kulfi for dessert, which was creamy and decadent. All in all - a fantastic meal and experience! Chef Vij himself came around to ask customers about the food and their experience - a really nice personal touch. Vegetarian options: Outstanding vegetarian options.
I had the worst dining experience I have had in years at Vijs. It took somewhere between 30 and 40 minutes to be seated for our reservation . My date likes to photograph food and has photographs with time stamps to confirm times. Finally seated at somewhere shortly after 7:30 we ordered two appetizers the prawns and the chicken cutlets as well as a Nan. These arrived at 7:58 these were passable and tasty enough but not what I would call exquisite. We ordered the beef short ribs as well as the Thali. These arrived 50 minutes after receiving the starters. The beef short ribs were tough and warm at best, the Tahli was cold. I suspect these sat in the kitchen unserved for some time but perhaps not. Regardless hardly what I consider food worthy of a good restaurant. Vikram the owner tried to tell me they don t start the entree s until the appetizer is served, not sure on that one it seems a little excessive. I eat in a lot of high end restaurants and haven t experienced those kind of wait times ever. They replaced the thali which I really didn t even want at this time, it came back in 5 minutes piping hot, possibly microwaved. When the owner came by for the second time and I remarked we all have bad days to which he replied I don t have bad days He then called me a liar . I have to say he clearly knows nothing about customer care, satisfaction or retention. In closing the food was at best so so. The server pleasant enough. The owner is a real piece of work, a real pompous ass. Based on my experience it s hard to believe this restaurant gets the ratings it does. There are dozens of restaurants in Vancouver that far outshine VIJs I will never go back.
Everything about the place we loved! Was glad to meet Vikram as he was coolest guy as expected! Definitely will be coming back time and time again! Food : 5/5
Amazing food and such a lovely atmosphere
Came here last year and it was great, decided to have a birthday party the following year with a large group (15ppl) and was very excited. I dont recommend doing so. This place is great if you are on a date or a small group (6 or less) The floor manager decided to bring dishes to our table at random, against our will. (We requested against this in the beginning and specifically ordered dishes individually as a group) Part of our group did not receive their requested dishes until most people finished their meal and yet they were able to consistently bring food to our table that we did not order. Afterwards, they refused to split the over $1000 bill between the people who ordered food and drinks, forcing us to deliberate among ourselves who ordered which items from the inaccurate list of items. Frustrating on its own. At the end there were items that we were charged for that we did not order. The food quality was also not as great as I remember from the first experience. Overall, disappointing. I received exponentially better service at an Earls during a 25 person work dinner. I anticipated much better. I am omitting numerous other complaints because I dont feel like typing everything out. None of us will be returning in the future and I wont be recommending it moving forward. A shame.
We visited Vij s on a busy rainy Monday evening. As we were in line to get in, Vij in person came to serve us chaï and to welcome us as we were waiting. Then, incredible flavours, great service and relaxed vibe made it such a great experience. Would highly recommend to anyone!
Great restaurant, love the food, everything is done well, each time we ve visited it s been the same high quality. This time we came with our 1 year old and the experience was wonderful as usual. Thank you to the all the staff and chef/owner for their kindness and creating such a welcoming atmosphere.
I dont usually write reviews, but this had to make it to the wall!! Being someone who loves to eat FOOD, this is something worth more than just any Indian food. Met Vikram and he has done an amazing job representing the Indian culture and the food, every little inch deserves an applause. The staff is doing an incredible job there. Great place!!
We have been coming here for over 30 years. This is our GoTo location for the family. Our visit as always was wonderful. Chef Vikram always stops by our table and we love that. The food, the service, the ambience was excellent. We will always keep coming here. You are guaranteed a great evening.
Amazing food! The best quality food Ive had in an restaurant in Vancouver. You can feel the freshness and richness of the ingredients through the perfectly seasoned (not overpowering) spices. We had the following: FARMERs EGGPLANT - even though Im not a fan of eggplants still loved this dish. Jalfrezi Vegetables - Stunningly good vegetarian dish we had with some chapatis and veggie rice. This isnt the type of Jalfrezi you mightve had in other Indian restaurants. Its mild yet so yummy. Rose Syrup Ice Cream - Reminded of how a good ice cream must taste. Vegetarian options: Great vegetarian options that arent treated as an afterthought to meat based dishes.
Its fine but way over hyped and not worth waiting in line or huge reservation lists. Your not getting Canadas greatest samosa or the butter chicken of your life. Vijs offers fine Indian foods, but with no spice level creating a mass market sort of taste that appeals to most. Naan is excellent, but the flavor I would be hesitant to drag my Indian coworkers all they way from Seattle to try supposedly canadas great Indian treasure.
I thought it was overpriced and overhyped for what it is.
It is one of the best Indian food I have ever had.
Edit: google reviews don t let you add a response, so I m editing my original review as a response to the owner. The food did not satisfy my taste buds but I had no complaints because everybody s palette is different. The hospitality was definitely a concern. I would never come on here to make a false claim about an interaction. My partner and I have worked in the service industry and specifically the food business. We have nothing but massive respect for people who run kitchens. We were shut down twice after being asked a question, hence it felt odd and unnecessary. I m more than happy to never return but kindly don t dismiss my honest concerns. Original review: I rarely ever post reviews but I ve mulled over this several times and do feel it s imperative to put it on here, given the fine dining prices charged here. The food is an interesting fusion take but some flavours are odd and don t really blow your mind, per se. However, what really crosses off this place for me is the service. I had the opportunity to meet the owner and chef, Vikram Vij. The service was choppy despite my partner and I making an advance reservation. We had to wait at the front along with walk ins. Once seated, we had the chance to interact with the owner and let him know about our Indian roots and our fondness for fusion food. Several times during dinner, the owner and the servers would ask us for our feedback on the food. But they d never stay to listen to our responses. Specifically, my partner was asked by the owner how he found the lamb and as soon as my partner was about to respond, he patted on his shoulder and gestured him to end the conversation. Since this happened several times over a span of 2 hours, it was quite awkward and humiliating. And for that reason, I won t be returning here.
Wow! If you want Michelin service and cuisine, Vijs is the place to visit. Absolutely every staff was extremely friendly and efficient from the hosts and servers, to the lovely lady from France who took our orders and looked after us. Vikram Vij came by to talk to us a couple times, such a genuine and friendly guy. Really felt like we were visiting someones home for dinner. The food was so authentic and incredibly delicious, with large portions. We were so impressed, what an amazing experience. Sat at the rooftop, it was so lovely. Cant wait to visit again, highly recommend Vijs! Vegetarian options: Thali was so delicious!
Food is very good. Especially braised Short ribs. We had an issue with the waiter forgetting to put our order through, so we had to wait for about 45 minutes longer until they realized their mistake. Otherwise nice service and food
The atmosphere and service was great, but the food was average and didnt justify the price. I was pretty disappointed as this is one of the only Indian restaurants recommended by the Michelin guide in Vancouver, but the food was pretty much the same as any regular Indian restaurant. From what Ive heard, the quality has apparently declined over the past decade or so as it used to be very well regarded.
Food was great. Service was amazing. Vegetarian options: Several options available, the paneer korma was really good. Food : 5/5 |
Visiting Vancouver had to stop at the renowned restaurant. Pricing is great. Food is amazing and the service was stellar! Mr Vij greeted us at the door and did a table to table satisfaction check, would deff recommend this as a must stop. Vegetarian options: 50% of the dishes are vegetarian
Amazing food great staff super attentive to our needs. Owner greeted us with a smile and checked in on us while eating!
A beautiful Sunday evening with my husband was encapsulated by amazing authentic Indian food cooked with just the right flavor and spice. The romantic music surrounded by the sweet ambience of the kitchen made for a delicious and memorable meal. We met the owner and he was so nice and caring and welcoming. Which other restaurant does the owner and chef interact with its patrons offering to hear feedback and support? I can t see any reason why anyone could give this exemplary place less than 5 stars. It s a true gem that we should never take for granted.
I came here for my birthday a couple of days ago for the first time, and I had an amazing time. Literally everything I tried (from my cocktail, to my entree, to my dessert, etc) tasted amazing. Considering what we ordered, we thought the taste itself was a great value for the price. But apart from that, the atmosphere was so lovely at the rooftop patio portion of the restaurant. And even all of our waiters were so personable and friendly (shout out to Pracketh - oh gosh, hope Im spelling that right). And to add to all of that, Vikram, the owner, stopped by everyones table multiple times to make sure everyone was taken care of. Will definitely be back :)
Delicious and flavourful, but had especially slow service for ordering and food. Some dishes are a bit salty which some may not like. Recommend portobello appetizer with naan. Vegetarian options: Vegetarian menu available Dietary restrictions: Gluten free items available throughout menu
Food was average, overhyped and overpriced. Service and ambiance were the only good things. Stick to Surrey for good indian food! The food lacks authenticity. For instance, the lamb kebab was not seasoned and was served with sweet chutney, when it is traditionally and sensibly served with a tangy sauce. The vegetable jalfrezi was bland and watery. And other dishes were middling at best.
Worst service and food was ok!! I think in the previous year it was much better!! Overpriced everything!!
So we went with a large party just before they opened for business because we had a large party and they dont take reservations. WRONG! They do take reservations now. Apparantly, there has been a change in policy. We went there because this is the favorite restaurant of one of the peeps in our party. The food did not disappoint. I wish I could tell you what we had, but we aye family style and my buddy did all the ordering. I do remember the Jack Fruit curry (appetizer), lollipop pork chops, and Better chicken (yes, better not butter) were fantastic. The food is somewhat tailored to the Canadian pallet (English not French, lol). The staff was great and checked on us often. The dining area, table, and cutlery were all clean. The dining area was loud, partly due to my party, but loud none the less. The parking sucks. Use a ridedshare. Do anything you can go eat there. Bring a credit card because its expensive, but you get what you pay for.
After being a loyal patron for over 8 years and a big fan of Vij s hospitality and amazing food, after tonight s dinner I have only one word to say highly underwhelming !! We were hosting our guests from Toronto and wanted to take them to the best Indian restaurant in Vancouver, but we were so disappointed with the taste that we have to go to another restaurant after having food at Vij s to call it a day. The portion sizes have been reduced, and the taste was definitely not at all comparable to what we have had in the past here! We ordered for eggplant with curry but hardly any curry in that. Chicken curry didn t have any special preparation and the taste was like having at any other rookie restaurant. We are a big fan of Gulab Jamun at Vij s , in fact it is the only place where we eat it, but even that was not good enough. And the price for 4 gulabjamum was 28$ before taxes!! I haven t had more expensive gulabjamums. I really hope that they can work around this and get the restaurant to its past glory as it is one of the very few indian restaurants in Lower mainland which has an amazing vibe, ambience and food that s different!
Excellent dishes. Very tasty and the staff (including Vij himself!) are very friendly.
Great ambiance and friendly staff.
The restaurant is very well decorated and the service was top notch. We were seated very next to extremely loud guests which was a bit distracting. The cocktails and mocktails we ordered were mind-blowing. The food however was lacking flavour. The fish dish was completely overpowered by other spicier dishes. It was a bummer because they recommended to order several dishes and share. We tried Vijs favourite snack and it was good but we had higher expectations given the Michelin recommendation.
Not worth the price . Ordered vegetarian and non vegetarian. Very disappointed with Jackfruit Kale curry two pieces of Jackfruit and rest was all cauliflower and kale . Dal Makhni was undercooked. Two samosas for $17.99 not only pricey but very spicy . Non vegetarian had more flavor than vegetarian. Had to try but will not go back
My favorite restaurant ever!
Didnt like food and congested place
Great! Matt is a very talented musician!
The service, food and ambiance was great. We ordered vegetable pakora, vegetarian thali, paneer korma and kulfi ice cream. Korma was extremely flavorful, and kulfi was great too.
We stumbled upon this beautiful restaurant and were invited in by the lovely staff. The patio is so beautiful and we were served by Praketh, who was so kind and helpful. The pork belly spoons are a must. Vikrams Favourite was crispy and flavourful. We cant wait to come back and try more food!
Nice ambiance, server was very nice & helpful in recommending dishes. Food- I enjoyed the chicken curry & lamb popsicles combo. Food was not spicy at all, so you may have to request for additional spice. For 2 people we had 1 appetizer, 2 mains, 1 dessert, 2 side dishes, and 1 bottle white wine and it came out to $100 (including 18% tip).
Another lovely dinner at Vijs. We try to come here every time we are in town. Today was perfect for dining on the rooftop patio. Food was excellent as always. Thanks to Diego and others for perfect service. Nice to see the man himself.
Honestly, this is probably the worst Indian food I ve had in Canada. Given that this restaurant is on the Michelin guide, everything in this restaurant lacks flavor and the curries almost have water like consistency. I would not believe the hype that has been built around for this place. Trust me there are better places around to try
Food is pretty average. Not made for Indian taste buds.
This was probably some of the best Indian cuisine in Vancouver! I would call it s more of a fusion Indian food. I started with Pork Belly Spoon appetizer. I had Chicken curry and Lamb Popsicles for the main dishes. Food was so delicious and service was good. Highly recommend to visit.
Amazing Food & Fantastic Staff! Absolutely 100% recommend this restaurant, everything was perfect. The owner, Vikram, was lovely and he truly made the evening memorable for us. He is extremely personable and when we asked him to personally select our appetizers and dinner items he went above and beyond. We will definitely be returning
I would say the food was definitely good, but not quite worth the price. The chicken in the better chicken dish was a bit dry, as were the short ribs. On the positive side, the goat curry was fantastic. However, $7 for a Zevia soda seems a bit steep. That said, the owner walks around and chats with the tables, which added a nice personal touch he s very kind.
Michellin star for a reason. Vij comes by every table. Reasonably priced for the food for the level of excellence. Amazing place. Don t miss Vegetarian options: It s Indian. Good variety Kid-friendliness: Willing to change some menu items to adapt Very kind Wheelchair accessibility: Main lounge accessible and ramp leading in
Highly recommend! Good food and great service! Waiters are always super nice, accommodating and they always give good recommendations!
What an amazing experience. Chef met us at the door. Welcomed us into his restaurant like it was his home. He took the reins for the appetizers and it was outstanding. He spent time with us, and made us feel like family. The food and drink is outstanding but the chef and staff take it to another level!!
Theres no other way to describe the food here. But, to put it simply amazing. I have had no problems what so ever here. Service was top notch, and the man of the hour himself has ensured to check in with everyone. My partner and I were extremely happy at the end of our food experience.
Vij is a well celebrated michelin guide Indian restaurant on Cambie St. The ambiance and service truly made it a memorable visit. However, I do feel like the dishes were made for people who can t handle spice or have been adjusted to the local palate. Pork Belly Spoonful ($6.5) 6.5/10 Very tender and flavourful, not sure if I tasted any apple or mint tbh. Thali ($34) 7/10 The roasted eggplant and chickpea kofta were my favourites, with the rest of the dishes being alright. My friend claimed that traditionally we would have gotten rice or naan but apparently not in here. Lamb Popsicle ($33) 7/10 The reason why we came to this place. Our friends raved about this place so we had to try it. The fenugreek cream curry was delightful, however I do have to say that the lamb was actually super tough to eat and somewhat small. Whole Wheat Chapati ($3.75) 5/10 A thinner flatbread made from whole wheat. This was supposed to be healthier but honestly I prefer naan. Rose Syrup Ice Cream ($14) 7.5/10 Served with gulab jamun. A sweet bomb for sure, even coming from sweet tooth like myself. Personally eating the ice cream with gulab jamun was a bit too much sugar for me, with that said the ice cream itself was lovely.
The food is different and has a lot of unique flavors. However, it somehow does not hit home. The fact that there are shareables instead of appetizers and mostly in curry form, its confusing with the main course. Id like to address Vijs comment here, since Google does not allow nested comments. My response is really well summarized by GPT-4o, which I am quoting below as is gpt-4oToday at 1:58 PM In a restaurant, including Indian cuisine, the primary differences between an appetizer and a main course typically include portion size, complexity, and their role in the meal. **Appetizers:** 1. **Portion Size:** Appetizers are generally smaller in portion compared to main courses. 2. **Complexity:** They are often simpler dishes, designed to stimulate the appetite without being too filling. 3. **Role:** Appetizers are intended to be the first course of the meal, preparing the palate for the mains. **Main Courses:** 1. **Portion Size:** Main courses are larger in portion. 2. **Complexity:** They are rich and more complex in terms of ingredients and flavors. 3. **Role:** Main courses are the focus of the meal, meant to be the most substantial part. Regarding curry dishes: - Curry dishes recommended with bread (like naan or roti) are typically considered main courses because they are hearty and filling. The combination of curry and bread forms a substantial meal. - However, in some scenarios, smaller portions of certain curries could be served as appetizers, particularly in tasting menus or special events. For example, a small serving of Chicken Tikka Masala in an elegant setup might be offered as an appetizer. It largely depends on the portion size and context in which the dish is served. In a traditional restaurant setting, curry dishes are usually part of the main course.
Best meal I have ever had - period! Fantastic 10/10 in every respect
A vegetarian meal. Pakora, palek paneer, portabello in cream sauce, naan, rice, jackfruit etc. All very good with attentive service. The roof deck, screened by vines street side kept the evening sun shaded. Food
Fantastic!
An amazing meal from start to finish. Beautiful atmosphere, great service, flavorful food, and to be greeted and served by Vij was a real honor.
Vancouver institution. Vij still walks around and checks on you during your mean. Great ambiance, centrally located in Cambie Village. Excellent execution of largely Punjabi flavors but creative uses of fusion elements and local ingredients. Vegetarian options: Its an Indian restaurant. Lots of veg options. Interesting use of jackfruit.
Went there for my sons 16th birthday and was worth it! Excellent service, good food!
Not worth for non alcoholic and vegetarian or vegan people. Not up to the mark as expected. Hope for more improvement with some more good options. Food : 1/5
We ordered chicken curry last night and it was absolutely very bad. Gravy didn t have the chicken flavour and chicken didn t have the gravy flavour. The process mentioned in Menu and the taste were polls apart. I have tried the same in many other restaurants but this was the worst that too from a star rated restaurant! May be good for people who don t know the real taste of chicken curry!
We have been visiting Vijs at its old location since 2001 and for the first time have seen a serious drop in quality, services and atmosphere. We used to vista the vancouver locations from White Rock even while MyShanti was active in South Surrey. The food has lost its legendary quality and the flavours were diluted. Sad to see the decline! Hope this is taken as a constructive review. We miss your original quality!
Everything about this place was great: great service, food and drinks. However even then it feels a bit too expensive. If youre willing to pay for great Indian food, would highly recommend.
My partner and I came here for dinner and Im glad we did. The service was 5 stars, plenty of kind and caring staff which I appreciate. In terms of food, I wasnt blown away and this is not the best Indian food Ive had, Im sorry. I ordered the thali which should come with rice or naan bread but here it comes with neither so I ordered this on the side. The curries themselves were okay, some were too spicy and others too oily unfortunately. Also, a thali usually is accompanied by a savoury and a sweet dish, here it comes with neither. Typically when I order a curry or a thali, Im asked how spicy I would like my food but I wasnt asked this here. My partner ordered the lamb rogan josh with rice and naan. He enjoyed his meal. Overall, we had a good experience but I wont be coming back. Ive enjoyed some really yummy Indian food at a more reasonable price at other establishments.
Top notch service paired with a creative take on Indian cuisine. I love all of the flavors of India and couldn t pass up a chance to taste them combined differently than I ve ever experienced. We re already forward to our next visit.
It was so good. and the staff was all kind!
I was honestly so disappointed by this meal - by far the worst of our otherwise wonderful culinary experience in Vancouver. I expected so much more from a Michelin-starred restaurant. I honestly feel that our run-of-the-mill local Indian spot in New Jersey serves better food and provides better service. Our servers forgot a portion of our order and didnt know the name of the dish they were serving, despite checking in far too frequently. And the food just wasnt interesting or elevated - the flavors were dull by comparison and gave the impression poor ingredients and spices had been sourced. I would skip this place.
Amazing service and knowledge staff. They got us in when it was super busy after only 10 min. Patio is super nice. Food was amazing. Only thing I would change is next time I will ask to increase the spice level. Vij is super nice and attentive to all guests
Some of the best Indian food I have ever had. The lamb Popsicles are devine. The goat was great. Its very flavourful, but not too hot. Every thing we tried was excellent.
Had a wonderful evening at Vijs. The service and food were incredible, lamb popsicles were amazing. Lovely evening!
This is one of the BEST RESTAURANTS EVER! Not only was the food delicious and the atmosphere on the rooftop sublime, but the STAFF WAS WONDERFUL. We especially enjoyed Allen, our conversations with the owner, and our fantastic and fun waiter. And MICK JAGGER and his band were dining just 2 tables from us. Everyone was super respectful of the situation to give him privacy. What a memorable night. We ll be back!
Great Indian food, excellent service and not to expensive. It helps that the owner is right there on premises, watching everything and chatting with the customers.
What a great Restaurant! Delicious food, great warm an friendly service, nice atmosphere and reasonably priced.. Really can recommend the often times mentioned lamb popsicles

Awesome food!!! Nitesh and Alan did great job
This place is not a restaurant, it s an amusement park. Today I was taken on the best ride of my life. Firstly, the lack of music created the perfect orchestra of ambiance with Vij as the composer. What a man. The better chicken was best in class. The pakoras packed a punch. Best dining experience I ve ever had. Vij s will be a staple for me for the rest of time. Thank you.
Probably the best Indian food I ve ever had. The service was impeccable and Vij, the owner came to every table to talked to everyone. Amazing Lamb Lollipop was the best followed by the Lingcod curry. I wish I could eat more. Will definitely come back again.
I found the flavours to be more mild and suited for a western palette. Still good vibes nonetheless
Very unique combination of Indian spices. Must try in Vancouver
The most amazing service from the moment you walk in. Very very good food, woulda given 5 stars but I feel like a place like this can always do a bit more with their commitment to excellence. Atmosphere was great too but mostly thanks still to the staff (not that the place/decor needed improvement)
The service is amazing. The best part is the owner comes and talks to each table. It s a really nice experience.
Great vibes. Good service and food despite being super busy. Great collection of wines as well, Also some quirky cocktails were nice but I preferred a bottle of Justin Cabsave, perfectly complimented the food. Good to see host on-site and taking care of the service.
I came here with my fiance on our vacation and the decor and atmosphere is impeccable! However we were very surprised by the mixed levels of service and the food, and would not recommend this overpriced restaurant. This is a very bland, watered down version of Indian food. My fiance is Indian, and cooks amazing homemade Indian food, so we know the difference. The first no no was when it took 45 minutes for our samosa (appetizer) to arrive. The waitress told us there was a mixup in the kitchen, and once it arrived, the owner came over and said it takes that long to make. Hmm. We asked for complimentary chutney given the inconvenience and the waitress just ran off and never came back. I guess that was a no! lol Also, the food is so overpriced. I got the veg thali, and it was fine. My fiance got the chicken tikka dish and again, just fine. Neither dish was wow, and each cost over $30. We wouldn t go back. It s not authentic.
We ordered takeout dinner, the chicken curry was different got used to the flavours, took a while but was good.We ordered takeout so cannot speak much on the atmosphere but the service in takeout is generally just the packaging of the food which was surprisingly below average especially in comparison with all the other restaurants here can surely be worked upon. The pudding was again something which was not outstanding maybe my expectations were high!
Vegetarian options: We had vegetable pakoras, jackfruit curry and paneer curry I dont remember the exact name but it came with mushrooms and coconut gravy. All the food were amazing even the cocktail drink the dark army was something different and refreshing. Our host was amazing too. Overall had a great evening. I highly recommend if you are looking for something different than a regular Indian food. We loved everything we ordered and are looking forward to visiting again. Ps: I really appreciate how conscious team was regarding environment that there were cloth towels in the washroom instead of paper towels. These little details made me appreciate this place even more apart from their delicious food and drinks :)
I loved everything about this place. Food was tip-top, atmosphere was lovely, and I was really impressed at how lovely the staff were and how the owner/head chef would walk around the dining room checking in with all the tables. I wished I lived closer, I would eat here all the time.
Absolutely delicious food, wonderful service! Vegetarian options: Great vegetarian options Food : 5/5 |
What a great experience!!! Served by the master chef himself he makes the finest food! It was magical! Incredible staff! Look forward to returning. Thank you Vegetarian options: Many options available all incredibly good. So much flavour.
Went there to celebrate with a group of 5 people. The wait staff were very friendly, I was greeted by each server I passed as I came in. The servers were always nearby to assist when needed and the owner was walking throughout the restaurant helping to attend to each table. The service was a 10/10 and noticeably better than most restaurants. The food was incredible and so flavourful. We ordered most of not all the appetizers to share and they were amazing. We had a vegetarian in our group and there were plenty of vegetarian options to choose from. They also had a variety of gluten free and dairy free options too. I will definitely be returning to try their entrees. The lamb popsicles are what I have my eye on for next time. They also had an extensive drink list which included a good variety of non alcoholic options too. Are the prices high? a bit but food costs have increased and most restaurants have had to adjust their prices for this reason. For the experience and the value of the dishes, it s reasonable. The ambience of the restaurant was nice and dimly lit. We all enjoyed our time there and I will definitely be going back again soon!
Excellent spot for tasty Indian cuisine. Cocktails were really great as well. Chicken curry and the eggplant starter were my top two, but everything was amazing and everyone in our group had different favourites. Vegetarian options: Lots of great vegetarian options!
Vija caters Air Canada flights. The food was nothing short of dreadful. The worst Asian Vegetarian food I have had in 60 years of flying. Inedible breakfast
Absolutely perfect! Unfortunately I didn t have any food because I wasn t feeling great, but my friends and family loved every dish they ordered! I did have some cocktails and they were absolutely delicious, I had the G&T but they managed to make it 10 times more delicious than the simple G&T. Also Vij stopped by at our table which was such a lovely thing for him to do! Also our server was the nicest, most attentive and efficient server ever!
Vijs in Vancouver is a must-try for anyone looking for an exceptional Indian dining experience. The restaurant offers a unique take on Indian cuisine, using fresh, local ingredients and traditional cooking methods. The result is food that is both familiar and innovative, bursting with flavor. The service at Vijs is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality of food and service. The restaurant is also a Michelin-starred establishment, so you can be sure youre in for a treat. If youre looking for a delicious and memorable Indian meal in Vancouver, be sure to check out Vijs. And dont forget to save room for dessert - their Rose Gulab Jamun is not to be missed! Vegetarian options: Vegetarian Thali
Wonderful experience. I ll come again when back in Van. Mo is an amazing server!
We have been visiting Vij s since the early days, we have always had a good experience. Thank you Vikram!
This place certainly does not need my stamp of approval but here are my two Canadian cents. Came here due to Anthony Bourdains visit. Had no clue my life was about to change..I consider myself a fan of Indian food and have traveled the world tasting different dishes of this fabulous cuisine. This place is hands down best I have ever had..and I cant think of a close second. The flavor profile of every dish just jumps and submits your flavor buds into submission. The spice level of the dishes is just right.. enough for you to feel its there without being scorching and a distraction. We came twice during our week long stay in Vancouver. If I could take Vijs hockey shirt number and raise it up into the rafters I would..but instead Ill leave this review.. proceed at your own risk from here because once you come you wont come out the same person. PS service and ambience were Also too notch on both visits so it was a completely excellent experience both times.
A single line. The best Indian food I have ever eaten in my life, period. I would leave it here but my husband would criticize me if I dont say why. Well her we go. Starting with the warm and welcoming welcome from the owner himself with a unique smile. Second, the atmosphere worthy of a 5-star restaurant. The music and the courtesy of the waiter made me feel like we were the only ones in a full restaurant. Then the deliciousness of the food Wow with a capital letter. That drink that I will never forget, a taste between the sky and the mountains. The dish we ordered was the best lamb I have ever eaten, a flavor that never interrupted each of the ingredients, it was like eating everything separately but at the same time together. I can not explain it. Come and you will understand why. It is the best restaurant in the world for me. I would return a thousand times more
Food is Mid, at least for the vegetarians. Definitely not worth the price tag. We had - Chat Salad - Tiffin - Palak Paneer - Kofta - Homemade Paneer Most things were alright. Homemade paneer was sour, they went overboard with Turmeric. Ghee Paratha was good. Naan and Chapati were not good. They know it better but I don t think that was chapati. Breads are very reasonably prices tho.
`If you are a fan of Indian cuisine or simply looking to explore new flavors, Vijs Restaurant is a must-visit. It is a culinary journey that will leave you craving for more. Just be sure to make a reservation in advance, as this hidden gem tends to fill up quickly.
Best place Restaurant in the world. I can even describe it. Just come and see for yourself. Them you will understand.
The food is decent, though not extraordinary. Theres nothing to complain about, and overall, the experience is good, but the food is average in my opinion.
Amazing meal!
6/19/24 Not great on all fronts this time. No idea what happened since the last time I was here, which was great. The owner was present last time though, and maybe he inspires the crew to perform well? Or maybe things have just changed? Or the B team was in play? No idea, but a bit of a bummer -- prior was maybe a year ago-- truly excellent meal Ive had in Vancouver. Get some!!!!
Seems like the food is made according to Americans palate and not Indian one. I ordered daal makhani and my wife ordered chicken curry and there was no Indian flavor. The daal was not creamy and was more like daal fry, same with chicken. I guess it works fine for the restaurant as they seem to be targeting non-Indian population which is good for them I guess.
First time visit, based on Michelin Guide recommendation. Reservations are preferred though not always necessary. Food is great, delicious combination of East Indian spices in the curries. Their supervisor / manager Alan was a perfect host and gave great suggestions, making it a point to visit all the tables Their Rose Syrup Icecream (kulfi) with Gulab Jamun was excellent. Overall, if you are in the area, you have to go dine there. Parking: Parking is scarce, easiest option is paid parking lot off 13th avenue, 2-3 mins walk from Vijs
We were lucky to get a good seat on a Saturday night in Vij s on his rooftop patio. We were greeted by Vij himself who quickly got things started for us. Our top favourite drink is the Dark Army which featured flavors of rum, mango, ginger ale, allspice and garam masala. We had the pakora and Lamb skewers for appetizers followed by Palak Panner and the Chicken Curry. The food was delicious and flavorful, each dish bursting with authentic Indian spices and ingredients. Vikram Vij is a true chef & restaurateur, creating a dining experience that is both memorable and satisfying. We highly recommend this or any of the unique experiences Vij s Restaurant offers. Parking: There are a few spots out front. Surrounding streets have minimal parking unless you have a permit.
Extremely delicious food, generous portions and flexible for allergies. Vikram the owner is also friendly and welcoming! Dietary restrictions: Great lactose free options
Food was excellent!
Love the rooftop patio garden! Has a clear plexiglass shelter and heaters, so you can enjoy it even if the weather is a bit off.
Fantastic meal! Attentive service, quality food, tasty and spicy but still easy to digest. I had the vegetarian thali plate, five different veggie dishes, husband had the butter chicken and loved it. Vegetarian options: The vegetarian thali plate has great variety.
No reservations
Realistically speaking the food is good and very unique, but in my personal experience it lacks some of the flavours that traditional Indian food has. No complaints and I would recommend people to try this if they want to try a unique twist on Indian food, but not for someone who wants traditional food.
Certainly the best Indian meal of my life, in a lovely setting. The chicken curry will change your life, but the coconut rice pudding set me on a path to nirvana. And the samosas . Oh so good!
It was quite good. We ordered a thali and lamb roganjosh. The dessert however was the best. A rose flavored kulfi with a gulab jamun in the center.
Missed the starter tea and pakora Food have become more expensive For some reason didn t feel the same as before you Food : 3/5
Phenomenal experience! Wonderful staff and roof top ambience. The food exceptional
what a delight! creative, fresh and classic. do yourself a favor and make this place a must!! any of these reviews that say otherwise have to come from people who are likely just unhappy and would make complaint of anything! the lamb popsicles, black chickpea cakes, eggplant with crispy onions!! yes! well done.
I have to say I was really looking forward to eating at Vij s and it has been on my list for a really long time. I had heard mixed reviews, but I was really optimistic. I finally got to go this evening and all I have to say is that it was really underwhelming. I love Indian food and have had my fair share for comparison and we (myself and boyfriend) really did not enjoy our meal. Upon arrival we got some chai masala tea which was nice and two bite size appetizers - we found both of these a bit dry. To start we got the Vikrams fav chicken and the flavour was okay but the texture was hard on the outside like it had been charred too long, it was nearly chewy and hard to cut. The naan was very thick and dry and zero taste off it I m shocked at reviews stating it was the best they ever had. The lamb Rogan Josh was nice to be fair the lamb was tender. I got the chicken curry and it was very dry, it had very little sauce and the portion was small. There was lots of chicken to be fair, but because there was no sauce it seemed so small and not what I d expect of a curry, the flavour was only okay. We also waited a very long time for our mains I had to ask when they were coming. Our waitress was lovely & let us know it was a new menu so it was taking longer as the kitchen staff weren t as familiar with it. Perhaps that s why our food wasn t amazing. Overall for over $30 a main I have had much better Indian meals for cheaper. Atmosphere and service were good.
Just had an incredible dinner Vijs with my husband and adult son. Paneer, Lincod,Goat Curry and Beef short ribs.... plus they give you some free samples and some Chai at the beginning. We finished it off with a nice Port and the sweet Balls, I cant remember what theyre called. Everything was fantastic our server was so nice, beautiful atmosphere calming.Vikram popped over to say Hi
This place lived up to its expectations. As an Indian, I was pleased to have the same taste as home cooked meals. The welcome snacks and chai were yum! Loved the fenugreek in chai! Overall great service, food and staff! Even got to meet the owner, he was really sweet and made sure everything went well on their end. Great for special occasions, or to treat yourself, as it s on an expensive end. Thanks for checking on us and for this experience:)
Delicious food but expensive, worth trying just one time
We visited the place on friday night and it was given place gonna be busy. The person at the reception was really nice and, since it was our first time there, they explained the menu and offered us some really good tea. All the dishes were delicious and so was the atmosphere (slow music). Well definitely come back again.
We are currently sitting at Vijs restaurant and have just enjoyed a lovely dinner and Vij is so personal, to come to everyones table multiple times to greet you and chat, it means so much the staff are exceptional as well. Our family are here to celebrate my wifes/momas birthday. We will be back soon ! Thank you Vij
It s been 20 years since I ve been here. Originally a frequent customer at the original location. Love the new location and set up and the service was good but not great. When the food comes out, the food server just pushes everyone on the table and offered very little explanation of what was been provided. The actual waiter was great and incredibly hospitable. But the managers need to know that the way food is placed on a table needs to be more deliberate and less intrusive. It was off putting when the server dropped a large empty bowl for bones onto me. Food was good but I ve had just as good Indian in North Vancouver too.
We had an incredibly delicious at Vij s! The food was spectacular and the cocktails inventive and tasty. We really enjoyed our experience and service.
The food no longer dazzles, suggesting Vij s is not the national dining destination it once was. I remember when this restaurant was a landmark dining destination in Canada, complete with very positive reviews from respected authorities. Today s meal was far from that and didn t provide real value for money. $16.50 for two bland potato samosas, with an extra $3.00 charge for (an admittedly tasty) tamarind chutney sauce?! At those prices there needs to be some meat in there. The lamb popsicles are a signature dish, and they were much better, but again not the scintillating flavors from the glory days. If anything, I felt the whole dish needed more salt - especially the sauce. Just three small lamb pieces cost $33, which is a reflection of the high ingredient cost, and maybe it is time to switch to a different cut. Service was very friendly although not totally smooth. It started when I didn t get a menu and finished with my server ending their shift and just disappearing. These are hard times in the restaurant business, but hopefully this restaurant can regain its former magic.
Seems very hit and miss. Ive been here twice and first time was such a great experience. Second time around, got served dirty plates and a watery lukewarm curry. They didnt even bother to inform about the preparation (taste was okay but korma isnt usually this runny) nor did they bother to serve extra bowls for a soupy dish that you just cant serve on a plate. The temperature and preparation makes me think it wasnt freshly made. Nothing wrong in your own twist on a traditional dish, but at least let the customer know. I couldve ordered something else, and maybe rice instead of naan on the side. Nobody bothered to even check on us until the end. We just wanted to be done and leave. Dirty plates are also completely unacceptable. Overall, terrible experience second time around. Wont recommend or return to this place again.
One of the best restaurants in Canada
We were very disappointed with Vij s tonight. We were seated in the heated patio area next to dead plants and lively ants. We let the server choose our dishes except for the lamb popsicles we knew we wanted for sure. He did bring a nice variety but gave us kabobs instead of the popsicles we ordered. Also, the service was very slow and trying to make eye contact when you needed a drink or the bill was very difficult. Hope tonight was an exception as it left us feeling this restaurant has become too reliant on it s past reputation and is now overpriced and underwhelming.
