Upbeat izakaya with inspired decor, offering inventive Japanese small plates & bento boxes.
we ordered: wagyu beef tongue on a hot rock, yuzu tuna oshi, bluefin oshi, pork bibimbap, tomato kimchi, black sesame panna cotta, and they gave me a green tea creme brulee for free for my birthday 🤗🥳 everything here was around $90 before tax and tip! (but I wasn't full after 🫣)
One of my favorite places I’ve tried on my trips to Vancouver! The portions were generous and our mains tasted authentic. The beef tongue on the hot stone was a fun and interesting experience. My partner and I enjoyed sharing our dishes, and I’d come here frequently if I lived closer. Note: Came during the three-day weekend during rush hour, so it did take them a few minutes to acknowledge us and seat us.
We decided randomly to eat here and we got there when they opened. We were accommodated even though we didn't have an appointment. The servers we very friendly and the food was good. We had the cow tongue cooked on a rock, and it was delicious. I have the sushi, and it was decent. The ebi mayo was good also. The Miso was different than I have eaten in my past. My wife, who is Japanese , said it's red miso. I liked another Japanese restaurant better, but my wife really enjoyed Kingyo. Everything was clean and classy. The bathroom was clean also. I have no complaints or regrets.
I had somewhat high expectations due to their great ratings, but the food we tried didn’t quite live up to them. As a fried chicken lover, I ordered their karaage and Hell Chicken—a special menu item coated in hot sauce. Unfortunately, the sauce lacked flavor, and the chicken marinade didn’t do much to elevate the taste. The sashimi was just okay; for some reason, the salmon and tuna tasted almost identical. The agedashi tofu felt a bit under-seasoned compared to the other dishes. We did enjoy the deep-fried fresh corn and pork cheek though. The service was very friendly and attentive, which helped make up for the shortcomings in the food.
I have been a customer of Kingyo since 2007, and came across their restaurant by accident (because social media did not exist back in the day…) while walking along Denman to visit my mom at work. I was and still am a huge Japanese cuisine nerd and addict and so I absolutely had to visit with mom. Their menu has definitely evolved over the many years, but my undeniable staples are the Ebi Mayo, Uni Miso Udon, and stone grilled Kobe Beef. These are ALWAYS on point for me. I’m just so sad the Menchi Katsu with rice is no longer on the menu!!! (Why???) We also tried the Kanazawa curry with tonkatsu and a Fish of the day teishoku. My aunt loved her fish set. Unfortunately I would recommend the restaurant try to change the bowl you serve your curry in to a more original round bowl or plate because a lot of the sauce was left on one end and wasted. Not as easy to mix into the rice due to the plate’s shape. However the Tonkatsu (pork loin cutlet) was simply outstanding in taste, texture and juiciness! Service was very prompt, polite and our server even gave my daughter a lollipop at the end of a meal. Every time I come back to Vancouver to visit my family, I have to dine at Kingyo at least once. Highly recommend!
We came here as a group of 4 scared because we didn’t have a reservation ahead of time but they were able to seat us in around 20 minutes! The food is absolutely divine and the server was kind and attentive, giving us great recommendations as well. We definitely over ordered but the wagyu and the sushi bowls we got are a must, and I personally loved the uni pasta!! I wish I could go back in time and experience this for the first time again!
Super unique experience with tons of Japanese options. Great to come with a bunch of people so you can try a bunch of things. Braised Beef (9.5/10) - really great charred flavour and meat just fell right apart Octopus Calamari (9/10) - tasted so good and you could really tell it was fresh octopus Wagyu US (7/10) - cool experience to cook it on a stone but taste wise nothing special Sable Fish (7.5/10) - fish was fresh but taste-wise just your standard grilled fish
Best sashimi I have had in a while, the ingredients used at this restaurant is fantastic. I absolutely loved the raw fish, would definitely come back for their sashimi. I did not particularly love their carpaccio as the pieces of beef were pretty thick and it is nothing like what carpaccio really is. It was more asian flavoured marinade for sliced beef. As for the croquettes and the tofu dishes, those were okay, but not something that I would say I loved. Overall, an enjoyable experience and I wouldn’t mind going back, but it is not a must.
Staff was super attentive and service was sublime. Food was a little expensive for how good it tasted, but overall worth the experience
I dont eat chicken or red meat, so didnt have many choices. I didnt enjoy the mackerel fish :( But my kids loved the food here. Food
Great atmosphere, authentic & delicious Japanese Izakaya fare. The portion size is good and the prices are fair given the location and quality. I highly recommend the kaiseki lunch (only eight per day so order ahead of arrive early) which is like a chef s tasting menu. Their donburi (rice bowls) and set lunches are also a fun option.
Tables and chairs are a bit crowded in, but the menu and service are worth it. Favorites were the Halibut Stock Ramen topped with egg and pork belly was heavenly, with amazing broth and quality noodles and the Almond Tofu Pudding with Jasmine Jelly was so delicate and refreshing and just the right amount of sweetness. Can also recommend the Salmon Carpaccio and the classic calamari. They also carry Hibiki for the whiskey aficionados.
Hands down the best fish I have ever eaten I am not messing around. The sashimi bowl was insane. Thank me later
1st time here and it was an amazing restaurant. We will definitely be back! Friendly servers and very welcoming! Delicious delectable dishes!
I came to the place starving, so theoretically I would think whatever I eat is fantastic, but all the dishes at this place taste soooooooooo bad that even I m starving I left most of them untouched
service was great but how ever the food.. Who ever make this menu need to learn the meaning of balance i been working in food and beverage s industry for years, there are so many thing on the menu just dont make any sense it is creative but how ever the presentation and taste is way way off. Like I said service is mamzing so i dont blame the server and cook for this horrible experience but who ever made this menu, please show some respect to your customer.
One of the best restaurants in Vancouver. Favorite for Japanese.
Absolutely charming local restaurant with great food and delightful wait staff. It s the kind of place you could go to every day!!
This place has a great atmosphere and delicious food. Had a few items during our visits and all were great especially their Wagyu or beef tongue on a hot stone, The same goes for tiger shrimps in tempura . Will definitely visit again!
Phenomenal food, friendly staff, and great ambiance! I always get their assorted bento! So worth it and the portions are great. Their steaks are always so flavourful and tender. The sashimis are fresh and high quality. Highly recommend
This place was so nice we had the most amazing food and everyone was so nice!! 10 out of 10 would most definitely recommend!
love kingyo so much!! especially the truffle udon highly recommend all the restaurants/izakayas in this chain, kingyo, suika, rajio!
Food was really good. The miso soup tasted more like Korean Doenjang-jjigae soup since I felt like it used Korean Soy bean paste which was very good but salty so needed rice to eat with. The Dan Dan noodles was good and so was the seafood bibimpap. It could be used with more sushi. We came earlier - like right when it opened since we didnt have reservations.
We had an array of dishes. And everything was fantastic. I loved the tan tan ramen.
Came here for the rock meat, stayed for the rock meat you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn t come to this fine establishment -
We had a fantastic meal at Kingyo on a fairly quiet Tuesday night. The servings were impeccably presented, incredibly fresh, and flavourful. Weve eaten here before and will definitely be back again when were in Vancouver. The sockeye salmon carpaccio was divine. The miso soup was unique. Pressed sushi is highly recommended. Friendly service.
I had to make a reservation 2 weeks early. Food was great.
Very nice restaurant like a Japanese brasserie The food was super fresh and good Food : 5/5
Always good time at kingyo, good food, always consistent quality, service is good enough, the vibe is fun, staff keep shouting things. And surprisingly the best avocado sushi in town. Parking is a hassle
I had a nice experience for their Sushi and beef on hot stone
Absolutely amazing restaurant ! The food is all so fresh and quality is amazing. Staff is friendly and efficient. I highly recommend tuna or salmon sushi, the karaage chicken. And get the corn entrée ! (You can t order enough !) Food : 5/5
Wagyu rice bowl is average and can be used for taking photos. The dandan noodles are delicious Don t order the cabbage snack. The drinks are good worth trying a glass
Its delicious. You can meet Japanese polite customer service again.
Wonderful Japanese spot in Vancouver!! Lovely atmosphere, great food options, wonderful quality sashimi and ingredients! 100% recommend and will return!
Great drinks and great food! Very reliable izakaya experience
Everything we ordered looked fabulous and tasted great! A friend got the last special and sharing that in the first photo. Top restaurant in the area, must return!
We walked in and the host gave us a table that was not reserved and didn t tell us that we have a dining limit for time when we sat down. Our sever didn t show up to our table for 20 min. We had ordered many dishes as well as sake. After an hour he walks over to us and says last call for food and I looked at the time and it was 6:30 I asked him why last call you close at 10pm? He said you will need to leave and I said we still have another bottle of sake to drink & he just walked off. He was very rude and kept forgetting items we asked for and we didn t have a pleasant experience at all. I always dine at Hapa Izakaya and the service and food is top notch. Don t waste your money here food quality is not great and service as well.
Food was delicious!
Every single thing is delicious, my favorite always the stone wagyu beef
The best sushi we had in Vancouver! I was not expecting so much sushi in Vancouver and this was the absolute best we had Great staff, overall excellent choice! Food
My gosh, the best little sushi joint I ve ever been to. Exquisite food. Great service and good atmosphere. We sat at a community style table. Loved cooking our meat on the hot rock and let me just tell you The corn was out of this world. As the menu says, you must try it!
My must go everytime Im in town since 2015. Always enjoyed the seafood bibimbup.
Its okay except for the ramen. I dont know if it was because the Seafood Shio Ramen Ive eaten so far was spicy, but it just smelled like seafood and didnt feel as delicious. I may not know much about it, so Id like to try ramen with the same name somewhere else.
Fantastic taste, loved it.
Great food. Recommend beef tongue and wagyu beef. I don t recommend the extreme wagyu bowl as it s too much wagyu. Try sashimi + wagyu beef if you can.
The food here was absolutely delicious and the service was wonderful. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant and the energy all the cooks and servers had. Eating here was one of the best eating experiences I have had in a long time!!!
The food is very delicious , I am visiting this restaurant very often, service is amazing as well. Everything is fresh, and also nice atmosphere inside of the restaurant. I will recommend everyone this restaurant.
Amazing experience. Great food
Out of all the sister restaurants, i have to say kingyo is the best price wise for the quality of food. Kingyo interestingly has more chinese-japanese influences. I tried their tan tan noodles and it was like a spin off dan dan noodles but with ramen. It was good, albeit on the smaller side but the soup helped me feel satiated. May not be able to say the same for other items Beer was good and the sesame panna cotta was delicious. Service was good. Interior is fine, albeit abit cramped. It s less lively than suika, so good if you actually want to be able to hear others lol
Visited Vancouver from Seattle and stopped in on a whim. Great choice! Great food, beer and atmosphere!
the oshizushi is quite boring and nothing special, but had some interesting pickled veggies inside, while the uni udon didnt have a single hint of udon taste inside of it and was saltier than the ocean. the noodles just tasted like typical frozen udon noodles from the grocery store.
Hands down our favourite restaurant! Honestly, the menu these folks have put together is amazing. The Chinese balsamic rib . Is perhaps the greatest dish in Vancouver restaurants.
Restaurant with high quality Asian cuisine at reasonable prices. You can taste wagyu cooked directly on the hot stone or taste many other traditional Japanese raw and cooked dishes. Wide selection of sake. Advised.
One of the best meals we had in Vancouver. Everything was super fresh and tasty. Favorites were the karage, sashimi salad and black miso cod. Only drawback is they don t have highchairs so might not be the best for very young kids. We managed by having our baby in the stroller.
Fantastic food, very nice service and pleasant atmosphere!
The seasoning was way too salty as it should be, and we expected more from a resto rated at 4.6. You know how bad it was as we couldn t even finish the chicken karage (sth we see it as basic and could nvr go wrong). Very disappointing.
Don t come here, please. Stay away from here So there isn t any wait time for me when I come BACK! I m sorry but I m too Full to explain how amazing the food , service and ambiance this place has! I forgot to take a picture of the food but here s dessert! If you have ever pondered on coming here, just do it! 10/10
Food was good, pricey tho. I liked the atmosphere. Service was also okay.
Came here for Lunch after a walk at Stanley Park in the morning. We saw this place on Google and decided it will be a good place to have lunch due to the high reviews. We ordered Pork Loin Cutlet (Tonkotsu) Combo, Beef Tenderloin Steak Bowl, Pressed Wagyu Sushi, Kanazawa Curry. The food here is excellent! Fantastic place offering delicious Japanese food, and the servers are Japanese too. My only complaint is that the lighting inside the restaurant is a little dark, but apart from that, the restaurant is very organised and orderly. Parking lots can be a little difficult to find here, so perhaps you could park nearby at Safeway and take a short walk to Kingyo.
Went to try an Izakaya and Kingyo didn t deceive. Very flavourful, great service. Strongly recommend trying out the Deep Fried fresh corn as well as the Tomato Kimchi. As for the wagyu; it was very good as well. A unique experience to have it cooked on stone grill, a first for me
Wow this is such a nice place. Unique, authentic, an experience and extremely good food. This place should have 4.9 - 5 stars
OMG so good. Could eat the entire menu.
The food is good, but the portion sizes are very tiny especially for the price. You can get the same quality food elsewhere for way less money. The workers are very nice though and the environment is fun.
Go feel the japanese vibes and great foods. Little pricy but worth it
I came to Kingyo and ordered the beef on the stone. The server confirmed my order, but after waiting for about 45 minutes, I was informed that my order was forgotten to be entered into the computer system. This resulted in a significant delay in receiving my meal, which was frustrating and disappointing. To make matters worse, when I finally asked for the bill, I had to wait for another 20 minutes before it was brought to me. The extended wait times and lack of attention to my order greatly impacted my dining experience at Kingyo. I understand that mistakes can happen, but the long delays and lack of communication from the staff were quite disappointing. I hope that this feedback can be used to improve the service quality at Kingyo in the future.
Deep fried corn is so good and the wagyu cooked on a stone is
The portions are really small and there is just a lot of rice in every meal The food lacks any real flavor and just tasted greasy The service was adequate given that they were busy so could be better The restaurant is quite busy but I dont get the hype
Tasty food for a reasonable price. Fantastic service in a cool setting. Vegetarian options: Rice n vegies Kid-friendliness: Lots of kids seated at tables
Its delicious
Food was exceptional, service was fantastic. Very fast and love the setting.
Only the best
Excellent Japanese food and very good and friendly service!
Creative Japanese cuisine, really delicious!
I am definitely a regular here. I always order the carbonara truffle udon and tomato kimchi!! They are delicious!
Loved the sashimi bowl and their uni miso udon, cant wait to try some other dishes Would 100% recommend the place for the cuisine, the service and the overall atmosphere of the place
The best sushi in Canada!
The food is very good, but a little pricey. seafoods are so fresh, the beef and the beef tongue is a little bit too normal and do not worth the price. We raised our hand for over 3 minutes for a water refill, three servers had not noticed us at all. But the hosting guy is really nice and doing a good job.
Loved everything here! Got the limited kingyo assorted bento. They only serve 8/day. Everything was fresh and consisted of the more popular lunch items at the restaurant. Can add miso soup and or rice if wanted. The service was really good and the restaurant was really nice and clean. Sat near the bar, and unfortunately the space isn t as big as I d like, but just to be aware! Would love to come back to try their other items on the menu
Very good quality of sashimi. The wagyu beef was a little disappointing, The meet was tender but very small portion and there was no other garnish other than the special sauce on the side. The chicken karaage was a little salty Tan tan noodle had a good black sesame amouny but needed more ground pork... In my opinion, they need to add more pork like they used to make yrs ago.
Tbh the taste was good I really liked the beef we got and truffle pasta was average towards good. The portion for all food was super small specially the beef one not even enough for 1 person, no proper ingredients or veggies beside it. But the taste was good for sure.
Great food, the grilled stone steak is fun, but its not the best meat Ive ever had. Sushi is really good. If you like ginger, you gotta try the house made ginger soda.
The uni and sashimi are not fresh. The uni smells bad but the chef said that s how uni supposed to be smelt like . I have tried tens of Japanese restaurants including Michelin ones and ordered items with uni. I am pretty sure fresh uni should not smell like this.
We had a wonderful time having sake flights! Its always so busy here, great atmosphere
Incredible. Sensational. All of exceptional quality. Fresh and great flavors.
Everything is delicious
We arrived as soon as the place opened and were able to enjoy one of KINYOs limited lunch Tray , with only eight available per day. Everything was great the staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. I d love to come back with the kids next time.
Kingyo s classic bento is always good!
why your lunch daily grilled fish size is SO different from Dinners? Lunch should be generous, so customers can come back for next dinners. You guys put the $20.80 and serve about the half of the fish from the dinner size with rice and a bowl of miso and pickles. The dinner fish is $18.80 ALONE without rice and miso. Its not a lunch special, Its just shrink menu you made. What did you learn from somewhere? All the Japanese places I visited in Tokyo would never work like your ways.
Must try the Ebi mayo! Sushi is so fresh Wagyu was so tender but the flavour is too overwhelming for me but still good. Food : 5/5
Amazing!! 10/10!! We ordered Lunch special (12 kaisen for $70), my ebi mayo (shrimp appetizer), Kingyo salad, Kanazawa curry with pork loin cutlet, Wagyu roast beef bowl, sizzling seafood bowl. (They are out of bento box). ALL of them are delicious! Right combination of ingredient to bring the best out of the flavor. Delicious wagyu, eel, and meat, melt in the mouth tuna and other fish. Seafood bowl and pork cutlet curry that left lingering tasty peasant taste. Left so satisfied.
Greeted with amazing hospitality and great service since we entered the restaurant. Special mention to Kam who served us! Food was good, black cod and frozen matcha crème brûlée are our favs! It was a wonderful experience for us before we leave Vancouver, highly recommended :)
I have been going to Kingyo a few times a year since 2010. I really enjoyed my experiences there until the past year or so. Like many restaurants after Covid and inflationary pressures, the food quality has worsened and the portion size has been reduced. However, I have been even more disappointed with some of the more recent apathetic service and poor workplace behaviour. I don t usually write reviews, but it s very unfortunate how some of the newer staff was being treated and trained. In February, one young, very pleasant girl was being bullied by a younger Supervisor. The Supervisor was very unprofessional and unpleasant with the new girl she was training. I could tell she felt terrible after being treated so poorly. It was a very negative experience for everyone, and I have never returned there to eat since. It s no wonder they have so much serving staff turnover with training like that. I used to live in Japan, and I go back very frequently. I have a lot of experience with the culture and I admire it greatly. Unfortunately, this shop seems to have adopted the more negative aspects of Japan and left the more positive aspects behind. I would recommend people try other Japanese restaurants if they enjoy high standards and professionalism.
Amazing experience, the food was tasty and reasonably priced for what it was. Our waiter Kamue (I believe that s how it s spelled) had great vibes and made sure we had an awesome time
Quickly became my favorite restaurant in the city. Amazing food, great service, and the atmosphere is incredible. Highly recommend.
Miso Udon and the tomato kimchi are delicious. We got the stone beef which was good and a fun experience but after you get it once I recommend branching out and trying some of their less popular items too.
Fun to order several items to share. Awesome service.
This authentic Japanese restaurant is simply 5+++ stars and is my fav in a town where there is ample list of very good restaurants. EVERYTHING on the menu has been well thought, and prepared with highest quality, and same highest standard of consistency. The service is warm, inviting, peofrssional and you feel like you are eating with family. Starter wise, they have staples like gyoza or edamame. But i suggest their awesone sashimi salad, its large enough to share for 2 or 3. I recently tried a special, the wagyu carpaccio. SOO Good. If you are a sashimi fan, try the 5 piece set. Super fresh (always), and great selection. If you are a red meat fan, suggest either the waygu on hot stone, or the duck breast (if its on the menu) Save room for dessert! The frozen matcha brulee is a delicious standard. Make reservations in advance, and let me know if you enjoy Kingyo as much as I have. Enjoy !
The food was absolutely amazing! Very unique combinations with fantastic flavors.
heavenly experience!! our server, Moe, was so accommodating. she had checked with the kitchen multiple times to assure us whether our food items met our dietary restrictions
Good food. Excellent service.
The good: waitress very nice and friendly, rice was cooked very good and fluffy, things came fast. You get to cook your own stuff with the hot stone so you can make it tender? The shrimp ramen had a diff unique taste. Ok: stone kind of cools off very quickly tho and I kind of wish there was option for them to cook it because of it. The bad: everything was way too salty from beef tongue sauce to ramen to miso soup. Especially miso soup, I couldn t eat it even after adding rice to it. Both my friend and I drank so much water we were full from water rather than food. The seating at the giant round table is awkward and doesn t really provide enough space. I don t think I will be coming again unless I get there super early and can get a proper table and maybe try something else. Is this place hiding reviews that aren t good?
Very important place on the map of BC. Service, cuisine and interior on very high level and with taste and love. Food
The menu has been changed and the unit prices seem to be lower.
I was amazed by the beef tongue and the whole mackerel set meal that I had to grill myself!! The food was served very quickly. Unfortunately, the whole store smelled a bit heavy with oil smoke and the location was too hot. Although the service was good, there was still room for improvement. For example, The guests have been waiting for a long time. When there was an empty table, they did not quickly clear the table for the guests to sit. They even took the initiative to refill the water for the guests who were already dining. How long did the guests have to wait? And the service staff told the customers who had already paid the bill when the whole room was full. The customer kept chatting and kept other customers waiting to check out.
We are a frequent visitor of Suika & Raisu & New-Fuji in Kitsilano. We had been to Kingyo 2-3 times in the past and we had enjoyed it. Yesterday (May 22, 2024) we were hanging out near Denman St and decided to go to Kingyo without prior plans. The whole experience was very disappointing. The quality of the fish/sashimi was nowhere near what you would expect from Kingyo or this restaurant group but, the absolute worst, was the Octopus Confit Salad. We were chewing each of the Octopus pieces for five minutes and they were just not breaking up. It was like chewing rubber. I even debated spitting them out but then decided to be polite and swallow them whole. We thought only some of the pieces were like that but all of the octopus pieces (5-6 of them) were just as bad. I really wanted to say something but I am a shy person and all my past experiences with Kingyo, and its sister restaurants, had been good so I chose to remain silent. Today, I found myself still upset with the experience, so I decided to leave this review, which I seldom do.
taste not fresh. The sashimi taste sour and the front desk is rude. Also the servers keep bring wrong dishes. Only come immediately when doing checkout.
Must try their stone dishes, tomato kimchi, ebi mayo, toro nigiri. For 2 people 5-6 dishes should be great and enough. Stew pork rice was a great ending
Great restaurant with great food. Highly recommended.
Delicious food, really sifferent and amazing taste. Friendly staff. Oh and amazing dessert too!
The food was delicious and friendly staffs
Amazing cocktails and authentic Asian dishes, super friendly staff and atmosphere!
Visited in late May 2024. Sat at their long communal table and had the classic assorted bento which included: prawn, tomato, wagyu ball, brussels, tuna sushi, calamari, salmon, wagyu sushi, hamachi, pork belly in potato puree, chicken karaage, spicy pork, sablefish, gomae, and scallop. Actually quite a filling bento box. Some items better than others but it gives you a good sampling of their dishes. Also ordered the eel hitsumabushi which gives you a bowl of unagi on rice with soup on the side. The ideal is to try the dish various ways. While the soup was nice and hot, I think I like the plain way the best. Delicate and tender eel. The yuzu tuna tataki was ok but I felt the tuna pieces were cut a bit too thick. I feel like it would have been better if the tuna was sliced thinner.
Limited options for folks with a gluten intolerance, but had a good experience overall. Service was very good; our server was friendly and asked a lot of questions. Food came out aesthetically pleasing, even if disassembled. Beautiful jasmine flower tea!
The restaurant is quiet, the food is very delicious Japanese, the Kobe meat is very delicious but very expensive. But its worth every bit, we cooked it on a stone and the shrimp ramen was very delicious.
Had an incredible dinner here!! The whole family loved it!
This restaurant is amazing!!! Its authentic Japanese cuisine. The salmon and tuna sashimi were the best Ive had!! The kobe steak cooked on stone was mouth watering!! The rest of my family loved the Ramen and noodles. Dietary restrictions: I cant have gluten and dairy and was able to eat here! Amazing food!!!
Ok food after so-so attempt at fusion and modernization. Ex. raw fish on (box) pressed rice instead of nigiri means things fall apart when dipped in soy sauce. Carpaccio is fish hidden underneath tons of sauce and salads look, looking more like an overdressed sashimi salad. Yuzu martini was barely drinkable and glass came 3/4 full only. Uni miso udon was yummy, and the beef tongue on their hot rock was interesting. Quick service and kitschy decor. This review is for food and bad mix cocktails.
Good japanese food. Reminded me of my trip. Would definitely go again. Affordable and quick service.
Wow! That was like a dream. Amazing food. Highly recommend getting the truffle carbonara. Can t stop thinking about it now. Also the Kobe beef is delish. Brought my bf here and now I think he might propose. ladies, if you want your main to bring the ring out, take him here.
Ate a tuna a sashimi and a ramen shrimp soup. After half an hour had to run in a wash room for a diarrhea
One of best Japanese restaurants
Delicious food, I really recommend the udon carbonada and the waygu pressed sushi! Aside from that the chicken karaage was SO GOOD! I cannot stress enough! Order this three food items and I am sure you ll review will be a 5 as well!!
We actually wanted to have lunch here, got a seat, but the atmosphere was so unpleasant (it smelled, the tables and floor were sticky) that we decided to just leave quickly.
The food and service are so good. We ordered sockeye salmon sashimi, blue fin tuna sushi, wagyu menchi-katsu croquette and the signature classic bento with miso soup. For there of us is more than enough. Will be back next time. Parking: Hard to find parking around during weekend.
Truly fantastic!
We ordered salmon pressed sushi (3/5), strips (5/5) and desserts (5/5). Quite well. P. S. If you wanna go here for bento box, it s only for lunch time from 12 to 2:30
Fantastic food, nice drinks and staff were extremely friendly. The atmosphere was very clean. Very kid friendly, and I definitely recommend going.
No Chinese! No Koreans! No foreigners! The waiters here communicate with each other directly in Japanese! Pureblood Sakura Shop! This is higher than the Japanese food restaurants run by Fujianese everywhere in Ottawa. I don t know where they are. I highly recommend flying here to eat there.
Amazing lunch for my daughter and wife and I visiting from Seattle. Each dish was super thoughtful and amazing, and it was a nice change to eat Japanese food that was not only sushi.
Nice restaurant and customer service, food is good.
This restaurant is truly amazing as soon as you walk in, the decor will whisk you away from the rainy streets of Vancouver.
A great find in Vancouver! When you walk into the restaurant, you immediately feel like youre in Japan. From the decor to the food, everything is authentic and just perfect. The Wagyu beef is incredible and all the fish dishes are amazing. Would definitely recommend!
One of my favorite places in Vancouver! Its so authentic, from the food to the decor. Its also amazingly delicious! Cant wait to go back!
Favourite restaurant in Vancouver : Amazing food and service. I ve tried everything on their menu , not even one complain :) Food
We reserved the special bento box in advance as there are limited quantities. There are a lot of varieties of food. Good for someone who wants to try out different food. In general quite tasty, except some components are on the salty side. Suggest to make reservations to secure a table.
The stone experience that they re famous for wasn t great. The wagyu got stuck on the stone when cooking. I should have brought my own pan. We enjoyed the deluxe sashimi set which saved the experience. We also got other dishes but it s not anything special. The table seating is a little cramped in the big shared table. Try reserving a seat if you need that extra space otherwise your experience will be disrupted by people moving around. I was looking forward to discovering a great Japanese food experience but got disappointed since this was hyped up by people we know from Vancouver.
I had the 16 piece bento, corn, pig cheek, sushi, and sake sampler. For the price point, I d say it was not as I expect it to be. But it is still good
Everything fits in this restaurant: authentic ambience, extremely friendly staff, delicious and fresh food. My highlight: the Beef Tongue on Hot Stone!
The fresh ingredients are fresh and adjusted according to the season. They are really careful. The lunch eel set is particularly popular, and I have seen customers order it several times when I come to the store. All kinds of cooked food are good, but ramen is not on the list, and the rice bowl is not big but just right. I personally prefer seafood, which is full of color and flavor. The grilled fish a la carte is also a favorite. The mackerel is not fishy and very big. Add a bowl of white rice and it is satisfying. However, the price is slightly higher, and the I was not satisfied with the wagyu beef I ordered for dinner twice, so I recommend having it for lunch rather than dinner (the roasting smell in the restaurant is stronger at night).
Kingyo is my must-go restaurant every time I traveled to Vancouver. The food is beyond amazing. Recommend everything on the menu
Amazing service, food was great, especially the karage chicken and the udon noodles. Would definitely recommend, plus the servers were so nice!
Excellent food, very good price and good service. Also cheap for the amount and quality of food. 110% recommend
Vegetarian options: Not many vegetarian options but the ones that I tried were delicious (agedashi tofu and avocado sushi) Food
Certainly this is NOT JAPAN!!!! We ve been going to KINGYO for since it opened, for the last 7 or so years.. management/service really sucks! We used to be greeted with warm welcome , we always felt they re very inviting; NOW , they won t even let us make reservations when we called in & worst, they kept trying to sit us at the counter! We used to go there once a week & the food was great, food now is usually good but not great so we like to show up once every half a year now & still it s a hassle to just get a table! Also I m Asian & when I m with my White Friend(s) .. we ve gotten much better service.. when I m with my Asian friend(s) .. we re told to sit at the bloody counter & a long waiting time for a table!!! I m very honest about this claim & any restaurants reviews as I ve been in the service industry for decades ,, my mogul is Treat ALL our Customers with eEualities & Respect.. unless they re rude or crazy .. then professionally let them go! We re NOT GOING BACK to KINGYO! It s an Insult to All of Us!!! Well, being in that restaurant months ago, it was just 1/2 full, where at noon .. there used to be for years daily line ups & the restaurant was packed (everyday!) Not anymore!
Between 2 people, we ordered the Weekend special assorted set Kobe beef on Hot Stone The service was great and very friendly, however the assorted set was quite disappointing. Though it was visually appealing, each little bowl consists of 2 pieces of fish and the rest being rice and chopped of fish. It did not feel the best while eating, as it felt like I was eating the left overs from the fish that was already being used from something else. It would have rather been nice, if it consisted less rice, and more full chunks of fish rather than it being chopped up. The beef however was tender, and the 2 sauces it came out it was good.
If you want try calming and traditional atmosphere, with a beautiful greeting smile, high quality food, and awesome service, please come and visit here
There for dinner with a friend. The service was amazing got the tuna tartare and truffle carbonara. Loved it! The negitoro sushi is a succulent bite. You will not be disappointed.
Ill continue to dream about the uni udon and beef tongue, they are so so good - the tomato kimchi was otherwise okay.
Excellent Japanese restaurant just like Suika & Raisu. Had the beef tenderloin bowl cooked medium rare with an egg on too of rice, it was melting goodness. Just wished it been in a hot stone pit so Ill probably get the eel next time or the duck pressed sushi our table neighbors seem to delight on. My partner enjoyed the beef croquettes combo and the black sesame panna cotta. Well definitely come back, the place was packed but the service swift and kind. The prices remain reasonable for quality ingredients in Vancouver.
I got the bluefin bowl, which was very flavorful and fresh. I would have preferred slightly more fish and slightly less rice for the price though.
KingYO-uve got to go here la! This place was very good! Went here with my friends and a Japanese student, he said it was very authentic and delicious. This establishment is a Japanese style izakaya. All the employees speak Japanese with one another. There is a special bento. This is a limited item. There are only 8 per day la! Overall, very good and not super pricey.
Everything delicious and the service very attentive.
Came early for lunch, was already a line but luckily got an allocation of the bento boxes ..amazing variety and flavor. Also ordered shrimp tempura and pork katsu .felt like we were back in Japan. Great service too ! Highly recommend
The portion is way too small for the price. Dont recommend it.
The very finest Japanese food outside of Japan. It blew us away.
This little spot is a hive of activity. Second Valentines Day for my partner at this cracker of a restaurant. They have the sweetest staff, vibrant atmosphere. Serving the freshest, yummiest food. I have an iodine allergy (shell fish) the staff were excellent in keeping that in mind when ordering. Definitely worth repeat visits. Dietary restrictions: Allergies
First time for me to eat at Kingyo on Denman Street. Went for lunch and loved the food and restaurant design. My server Shohei was also friendly and thorough. I ll definitely go again.
the tan tan ramen was so amazing 10/10!
The trendy bento box is only available during lunch! Regardless, they have a lot of other enticing options. Their drinks are also pretty interesting so we had the Moscow mule, cactus, and raspberry apple cider. They go down like juice, so watch out lol. For food, we ordered the salmon tartare, bluefin tuna and avocado carpaccio, wagyu and toro donburi, and the special wagyu hot stone with beef from Mie. I think the salmon tartare was my favorite, with butter salmon in rich seasoning on crunchy battered seaweed. The carpaccio was pretty messy and it didn t seem like they wanted tuna to be a highlight of the dish, more like part of a bit of salad. The donburi has beautiful presentation, but it s a little disappointing. There s only like 4 chunks of tuna at the top, and the Wagyu is pretty substandard; you can see from the picture that it s not really marbled like what you typically imagine. The hot stone beef is much better and a little fun to cook as well.
Very great dining experience. Stone beed tongue and wagyu is a must try. The supreme wagyu bowl also tasted wonderful, in particular urchin is fresh. Also after knowing we came here to celebrate birthday, they gave us a complimentary choice on dessert menu. The final dessert is very tasty and decorated with wishes. Overall had a great experience here, service is also great and quick.
The ingredients are fresh and delicious, the beef portion is very small, and the desserts are very unique
Must try Blue fin Don, so good
I saw this place on Instagram, and I thought this place would surpass my expectations. Unfortunately, Kobe beef was tough, and the portion was small. Sushi was okay, but not sure if it was worth the price that we paid. I felt like we were paying for plating, look, and atmosphere rather. Sadly, the food was not top-notch, just okay.
Delicious!!
I had a wonderful experience at Kingyo today! We were seated immediately as we had a reservation but it looked very busy and others had to wait for a table. The servers were all very friendly. Since we got a slightly cramped table, they gave us a free dessert, which was very much unexpected and appreciated! Food wise - I really enjoyed the salmon tartare which came with deep fried salmon skin as chips to eat along with the tartare. The hot stone beef bowl was delicious! And upon our server s recommendation, we went with the frozen green tea brûlée, which was the perfect end to our meal.
Kingyo never disappoint me! Love their stone eel don as always. Taste of authentic Nagoya
Delicious food and service. The sashimi bowl was so fresh and delicious. The eel bowl was very good. Highly recommend.
The most delicious food I ate in Vancouver! I ordered salmon tartare, uni miso udon and rice ice cream for dessert! Everything was great! Very pleasant atmosphere, great experience even for those who go alone, I enjoyed staying at the bench. And the service was special: all the staff simply greet you when you enter and the waitress Isono (I dont know if I wrote it right) was super attentive and helped choose the best options for me! English: everything was incredible, best Japanese food I had in Vancouver, nice atmosphere and the staff was very welcoming, especially the waitress Isono (maybe Im spelling wrong) who kindly explained all the options and helped me choose the best meal for me taste.
Really dying for uni to end up my trip at Vancouver. Ordered for pick up. Food was phenomenal, bit extra waiting while in rush hours. Just don t really understand how come there is no wasabi or soy sauce packed up automatically. Sashimi was pretty fresh though, just taste bland without condiments.
I adore the sashimis freshness and tender wagyu beef. Paella and dessert are also favorites.
I had a great experience here! The customer service was very nice, and everyone within the restaurant made us feel welcome. Tasty cocktail with light amount of sweetness which was just perfect. Every dish was fabulous and delicious. My personal favorite among the dishes was the kimchi tomatoes. It was so interesting for us to notice the flow of dishes and how a new one would be ready by the time we finished the first one. I would recommend a reservation in advance to grab a table, but if you are okay with waiting a bit and potentially sitting by the bar, a reservation would not be necessary. Thank you Kingyo for such memorable experience. Arigato gozaimasu!
The tasting box is a great way to try a bunch of different dishes but the stand out thing to get here is still definitely their kobe beef grilled on a rock and wagyu dons. Both were excellent and unique ways to cook and a must get here.
Kingyo is my favourite restaurant in the city. Super friendly staff and amazing food I got: - Mango calpico (yummy drink) - Sashimi bowl (yummy food)
People queued up before the restaurant opened for lunch. Each course was bursting with freshness and rich flavors. The service was exceptionally attentive.
Ordered Blue Fin Tuna pressed sushi. The rice wasnt sticking and wasnt pressed firm. I almost needed to ask for a spoon to scoop it up. Taste was ok, but there was a chunk of sth in it, I guess that is fish bone. If it is my friend asked me not to ruin the dinner, I would have complained. Beef Tongue on grilled stone was ok, but the sauce is extremely salty. Tan Tan noodle.... well, it is a Japanese style Tan Tan noodle, so... nothing to complain about. It does not have much taste of peanuts, and it is not spicy. Taste ok. Calamari.... the appy was the very last dish to come.... it is disappointed. Soggy and sauce had no flavour in it. Well, it is an old restaurant that might not need to care about the food quality anymore. Kid-friendliness: not kid friendly at all. Wheelchair accessibility: ppl cant really walk through.
Great Japanese food, nice interiors and vibe. I recommend the deep fried pork chop set and fried chicken. Eel rice is also good but too much spring onion Fried pork chop rice and fried chicken are both delicious. The steamed buns, fish and rice are both delicious, but too many onions are not my cup of tea
The best Japanese spot in the lower mainland hands down! Words can not explain how delicious the food was! I got the lunch bento and man it could feed 2 but my friend and I ordered one each. Everything was delicious, a 10/10. Nothing could be faulted or improved. They were also very kind to accomodate my request of getting torched fish - I dont eat sashimi. Highly recommend coming here.
We liked tomato kimchi, roasted corn, grilled pork cheek, ebi mayo, butano kakuni bowl, and the Dan Dan noodle
If the store only considers its own business and repeatedly shirks the needs of customers and things that the store can and should do, then your business will be affected because you lack basic kindness and only want business. I will say no to you. There will be more and more customers! I have been to dozens of Japanese cities and hundreds of stores. Stores like yours that ignore customers and do not take customers reasonable requests seriously are rare. They are indeed different. Bad review! ! !
Loved the food and the service here. We came in for a quick lunch bite on a Sunday afternoon and it was busy, but still lots of seating. I loved the atmosphere with all the bamboo and plants all around the restaurant. We got the jasmine flower tea, the beef tongue, the tan-tan noodle bowl, and the beef tenderloin bowl. It was all so tasty and very filling!
Overall, its great parking is a big problem
Great food & service, our table enjoyed all our orders, no complaints. Friendly and servers took good care of us. Great atmosphere, and the somewhat open kitchen helps with that. Nice lighting as well, you forget you re in vancity. We ll be back again. Parking: Street meter parking, not hard to find a spot.
