L’Abattoir is located in the heart of Gastown between historic Gaoler’s Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver’s first jail. Originally buttressed to the city’s main butchery and meat packing district, the name L’Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood’s colourful past. Chef & Owner Lee Cooper is dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in a comfortable, yet refined setting. French-influenced West Coast fare is paired with an award-winning wine program and innovative cocktail list to offer an elevated and unique dining experience.
Girl friend’s birthday wants to bring her to one of the best 100 Canada restaurants and rated the best in Vancouver for a number of years. The restaurant didn’t let us down at all. The only thing is i made the restaurant as my friend’s birthday celebration but they forgot 😅. Food and environment is so great. Chef menu has choice of 2 for every course and both options look great. We ended up ordered every dishes. We also added truffle tart to share. It’s absolutely worth it.
The food was not bad, but it was not amazing and I did not find it to be worth the price of the tasting menu. My whole table especially disliked the sauce that was paired with the steak, it tasted like dark soy sauce/ oyster sauce and that definitely is not suppose to go with steak. Everything else was not bad and I absolutely loved the popcorn ice cream, that is likely the only dish here that I would order again. There were no drastic issues with any of the other dishes, but I also did not find it to be super delicious either. Very nice atmosphere, cool decor and great service.
We celebrated our anniversary with L’Abattoir and it was a treat! Warning! If you usually don’t have a big appetite, just go for their five course menu. It got us stuffed midway and we considered ourselves heavyweight eaters. We asked for wine pairing and it worth every dime (since we don’t use Pennie’s anymore). Wine steward would introduce the wine and gave you a brief introduction of it and why they chose this to go with the dish in front of us tonight. Every drop tasted like heaven! Will definitely return for more!
We have nothing but amazing things to say about L’Abattoir. We chose their private venue for our wedding ceremony and reception. We had a total of 33 guests including us two and our photographer for our wedding. From our initial contact with Laney, to the night of our rehearsal and wedding day with Emma, everything ran flawless and smoothly. Laney delivered superb customer service and guided us along the planning of our wedding. During our wedding day, Emma seamlessly coordinated our timeline perfectly. We are in such awe at how lovely and memorable our most special day turned out! The food was excellent, the employees were kind and courteous. Our guests couldn’t stop talking at how delicious the food was! We are so happy we chose to have our wedding here at L’Abattoir! They have exceeded well beyond our expectations!
I knew it's a famous French restaurant in Vancouver but I didn't like the food. We had chef menu but only a few dishes I liked. Most dishes were too strong and lacking of freshness. Especially, my steak was overcooked and the sauce was bitter. And strawberry sorbet was too sweet and its cream sauce was very milky. I really wanted some citrusy to refresh the tastes.
One of my favorite places in Vancouver. The happy hour is awesome and a good way to sample their food. We had our wedding ceremony and dinner here and the staff was amazing. They were very understanding and accommodating. The food is always very good quality and delicious.
Lovely setting, though we weren’t impressed by the food and found it overpriced for the quantity and taste. The 7$ bread was tiny and we didn’t enjoy the spread very much. The steak Diane was cooked well but tasteless. The potato was the best part. The sablefish/black cod was, black cod. The tomato based sauce was very good though. The tuna appetizer with sorbet was interesting but overpriced for 4 pieces of fish. We enjoyed the only vegetarian dish the most - ironic considering the name of this place. It was the truffle corn agnolotti. The strawberry dessert was good but everything just tasted strawberry. No surprised there.
Incredible night, the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. We had the chef menu, it was incredible. We also had the wine pairing which was amazing and learnt a lot. It was a truly memorable meal. The pacing was perfect, and was satiated without being too much. I hope to go back again!
Tonight we went on a true adventure with our wonderful host, Prableen. Ive never tasted anything like we did tonight, this is a place well remember for a very long time.
This is a late review, but well worth sharing! We started with an assortment of breads, which was a great touch and set the tone for what was to come. The sablefish was cooked to perfection rich, buttery, and flaky, with just the right seasoning. The lobster, oh, it was truly indulgent every bite was packed with love and perfectly prepared to highlight its natural sweetness. The Pacific oysters were as fresh as ever, offering a clean and briny bite that set the stage for the rest of the meal. The sommelier at L Abattoir was fantastic, guiding us through wine pairings that enhanced each dish beautifully. By the time we reached the mille-feuille, I was almost full, but this dessert completely closed my appetite with its crispy, creamy layers definitely one of the best desserts I ve had. It left me with a smile, tipsy and satisfied. Whether you re dining in or grabbing a drink at the bar, L Abattoir consistently impresses with excellent service, delicious food, and an inviting atmosphere in Gastown. I ll definitely be back!
We were in dark room, and had appetizers to start of Lox, and variety of meat slices. We could not tell what the accompanying sauce/condiments were as no note with them. Found out boiled chopped egg yolks and build chopped egg whites accompanied the salmon....odd! Would be better with whipped cream cheese or better still whipped salmon cream cheese. The salad that started the meal was different and delicious but a lot! This was followed by either seared tuna which was perfect, but I had the fois Gras which was not that but a turbine. However, it the accompanying sauce and sweet bread were a perfect match I then, had the steak which was perfectly done, medium-rare, succulent, melt in your mouth tender, but the caramelized onion sauce was burn my mouth too salty! The desert of Creme Brulet was also perfectly done. However, the Black Forest cake was too strong with dark chocolate....Not my Grannys recipe. Like many restaurants BC wines seemed a focus which I find over rated and over priced. With a few improvements this would have been 5 stars!
Excellent service and descriptions of the plates. The tartare is a life altering bite!!
Great food and ambiance. The service was very professional but still friendly. I highly recommend.
High quality delicious food
A wonderful dining experience! On our first night visiting Vancouver we walked by the restaurant and after reading great reviews and liking the atmosphere, we decided to give it a try. Despite being a busy Friday evening the maitre D was very warm and friendly, she found us a great table and spent time chatting with us, such a difference than our usual dinners out in Los Angeles. The ambience created the perfect atmosphere; the dim lighting allowed intimacy while the brick wall leaves one aware of being in a major urban environment. The service was impeccable; each dish was explained in detail upon presentation, and in particular Matt our server was very thorough with his knowledge of the menu. The food was excellent, from the presentation to the inventive juxtaposition of flavors. The menu definitely has something for everyone (I m pescatarian and had many options). Overall this was a true gem, I am shocked the restaurant doesn t have a Michelin star. We will certainly be back on our next visit to Vancouver!
Ooh la la! Delightful for a special night out. Food
Absolutely blown away by the seven course tasting menu. Surprised my boyfriend with a birthday meal here and the service was simply superb. Attentive and great pacing. Every dish was flavourful and spot on, and we loved learning more about each dish, the technique used and its history. - bread course - so crispy and buttery. The cheese spread was amazing. - chutoro - perfect one bite, the fish was so fresh and soft. - baked oyster - wow, that sauce. So rich and packed with umami. - octopus - cooked perfectly. Loved the crispy jalapeño on top. - scallop - a perfect autumn dish. The lentil ragout was so rich and comforting and the crispy pork was a great touch. - beef tenderloin - pleasantly surprised by the broccoli purée. I also loved the bone marrow sauce. Beef was cooked perfectly. - sorbet - great palate cleanser. Loved the touch of grape. - chocolate tart - so rich so beautiful. Great tart shell but with a rich gooey center. - shortbread - wow I am obsessed. What a way to end the meal. Perfect chocolate matching the restaurants tiles, caramel center, rich buttery shortbread. Overall amazing meal. Can t wait to come back.
Server B was extremely slow, and even when they came to take the order for the table next to us, they ignored us completely. When they took away our plates with full of leftover food, they didn t ask us a single question about what s the matter. While we were waiting for the bill, two cockroaches crawled onto our table. Despite the commotion, no one came over, and eventually, a guest from a neighboring table had to kill them for us. We tried to leave quietly to avoid disturbing other guests, but we had come here to celebrate something special, so we expressed our extreme disappointment. The host at the front claimed, We ve never had such an issue before, and said the manager would reach out to us. It s been three days now, and we haven t received any message. This was one of the worst dining experiences I ve ever had, a complete waste of my tip, my money, and my time. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Attached photos are the proof of dining in here.
Never disappoints! Always a treat to have a meal here! One of my favorite go to when in Vancouver.
We popped in here for a drink and a little bite at the bar. The service was so amazing. We were treated so nicely and there was proactive accommodation made for me to be able have something suitable to eat. Cocktails were PHENOMENAL. The atmosphere is swanky and cozy. Love it! Dietary restrictions: Very accommodating with my dietary restrictions.
Did not have a good experience and regret coming here. Their boneless rack of lamb was 3 small pieces of meat in a sausage casing that did not taste great. There was a more than 30 minute wait between appetizers and main dish despite not being busy. I watched the bartender use less than half a can of Diet Coke put it in a glass and fill the rest with ice and not give the waitress the rest of the can to give to me. That is pretty ridiculous.
Tried the Chefs Menu at this stylish Gastown restaurant. Favorite part of the meal was the first trio- crab salad, steak tartare and duck foie gras. Very helpful Sommelier. A nice night out!
Had the tasting menu and it lived up to the hype. Standouts were the baked oyster and the foie gras amuse. The sorbet on the sabayon was also great. Service was excellent. The restaurant was a touch loud. Overall, excellent. One of the top restaurants in the city.
I dined here for my birthday and the atmosphere was great, food was amazing, and the staff were so friendly. I would highly recommend to anyone!!!
Outstanding food and service. Really felt the creativity of each dish from the chefs. I highly recommend checking their tasting menu out!
This place is high-end, meaning expensive! I found it pretentious in its food presentation: we used to call it noveau cuisine. I was treated to the meal by a very generous couple, and thats why I was there. I loved the oysters and liked the octopus appetizers but thought the steak wasnt the best. For a place called LAbbattoir, I expected better! Im definitely not of the demographic they are looking to attract, it seems! Our server served us in an off-handed manner, as though she had better things to do.
You could get better service at a fast-food restaurant. This review is not about the food but rather the appalling, unprofessional, and outright disgusting attitude of their server. The fact that L Abattoir has the audacity to call itself a fine dining establishment and worse, a Michelin-recommended restaurant is laughable. It perfectly illustrates why Michelin ratings have lost credibility, and L Abattoir serves as a filthy stain on Vancouver s culinary scene. From the moment we arrived, the experience was marred by the server s condescending attitude. His rushed demeanor made it abundantly clear that he cared more about closing the kitchen early than about the guests. Although it was only 9 PM, with the restaurant scheduled to stay open until 11 PM, we were made to feel as if we were an inconvenience. His sense of entitlement and lack of professionalism soured what should have been an intimate evening. As if that weren t enough, the server interrupted our conversation by slamming a cupboard door directly into my chair without so much as a word of apology. It was the final insult in an evening filled with passive aggression and careless service. This establishment s arrogance is astounding, given how poorly it treats its patrons. I urge anyone considering dining here to read through the many other negative reviews detailing the horrendous service. L Abattoir stands as a prime example of how far supposed fine dining can fall. I m still disappointed in myself for leaving a tip for such despicable service it certainly wasn t deserved. Save your time, money, and dignity.
I have to say this was an underwhelming experience. Given the pricing, description of the restaurant and the praising reviews, I had much higher hopes for this restaurant. Afterwards, we just felt it wasnt worth it :/ From the food to the atmosphere, things just felt incohesive and confusing. The music was loud (r&b, hip hop, etc.), the bathroom didnt have clean towels or a hand dryer, tables were crammed and we were seated in a corner right up against a glass exit door so it was quite cold all night. We did the 7 course chefs menu. Most of the dishes felt very uninspiring, flat, basic and one dimensional. The main dishes were just more like a well plated The Keg style meal, there were no stand-out flavors or textures. Presentation was neither unique nor beautiful. Starting from the tuna and roasted scallop dish we thought perhaps it was building up to something more exciting, but that climax never came. I have no idea what was tandoori about the sable fish. And the artificially green condiment with the beef fillet had no flavor and was not pleasant to look at, i have no idea what that even was or why. The couple of unseasoned small brocolli florets that it was garnished with just felt sad. Dessert followed similar trends. As for the warm chocolate tart, Im not a fan of the large amounts of cocoa powder and the thick/dense souffle that will have you reaching for water to get it down your throat. I cant believe the millionaire shortbread counted as a course, I genuinely thought it was just a chocolate that came with my bill as it was placed on a plastic paper in a brass plate. There were some interesting and exciting dishes, such as the steak tartare and baked oyster which were very amusing single bite appetizers. They nailed these ones, great texture, flavor combination and creativity. The feedback from this review was of course expressed politely to our waiter. I hate to leave an unpleasant review but I think a restaurant with such high reputation and price point can handle it. Compared to some other establishments, lAbattoir felt lacking of attention to detail and effort.
One of the best restaurants in Vancouver for sure. Service was outstanding, cocktails were creative and perfectly executed. Kitchen killed it. Foie rocked, octopus with blood sausage too. Will absolutely be back.
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Gastown, so I looked forward to showing my SIL this place. As my SIL was still recovering from a bout of diverticulitis, I didn t order a bottle of wine. I had two wines by the glass, and we shared a few dishes. We started with their fabulous bread service, then a Dungeness Crab salad, an Artichoke tart and their Terrine of Fois Gras. Our main was their Agnolotti. I had a glass of 2022 Garnier et Fils Chablis with the salads and a glass of 2016 Synchromesh Pinot Noir from Storm Haven Vineyard in Okanagan Falls, BC with foie gras and agnolotti. The Artichoke Tart was half salad, half egg custard tart with pieces of artichoke between the two. It was a light, refreshing dish. The Dungeness Crab Salad was a visual surprise the crab was placed between thin slices of radish and decorated with green leaves. It was interesting; perhaps a little too subtle in flavor for me. The foie gras terrine came with two thick pieces of brioche. The square of terrine was decorated with squares of wine jelly, and cherry halves. The terrine was soft and silky and the brioche so buttery. The star of the evening was the Sweet Corn Agnolotti. Pillows of mascarpone pasta were covered with pieces of sweet corn and a generous helping of sliced black truffle. This dish was to die for and I wanted to order a second plate. I love the food at L Abattoir and dine here every time I come to Vancouver. I was sad to see they no longer offer breakfast on weekends. I miss their Full English Breakfast.
Really outstanding meal here for my husbands birthday. We chose the chefs tasting menu with wine pairing and were really pleased. From the enchanting setting of the restaurant, to our knowledgeable server and sommelier, we absolutely got what we paid for and more.
Great place with excellent and well-informed service.
Food was very underwhelming. Got the bread that everyone was raving about, but it tasted stale. Mentioned it to the waiter and they were like that s odd. They didn t include it on the bill, which was nice at least. Steak diane was very good texture, but sauces didn t go well together.
The menu at LAbattoir showcased elevated French-inspired Pacific Northwest cuisine, and here s what we tried: Octopus Perfectly textured with harmonious flavors, a standout starter. Terrine of duck foie gras Creamy and well-executed, though the brioche could have been more buttery. Wild Pacific Halibut Cooked to perfection with a slightly transparent pink color, and paired with clams, asparagus, and a delicious garlic nage, was a highlight of the main course. Milk-poached pork loin Served with summer vegetables, smoked bacon, and a béarnaise sauce, was succulently tender and juicy - a dish I highly recommend. Chocolate tart A rich and decadent indulgence with a crispy shell and molten center. The industrial chic decor created a casual fine dining atmosphere with attentive service. Though the location may seem concerning, its a safe area worth visiting for the exceptional food and ambiance. _______________________ IG: #roamardtheworld #roamardtheworld_vancouver #roamardtheworld_food
A high-end, inventive restaurant. Impeccable service, courteous and even friendly. Very interesting wine list with several offers from the surrounding area. A real feast not to be missed
Fabulous! We experienced the chefs tasting menu and the food was wonderful. So many different tastes & textures in each of the individual courses. The wine pairings were perfect and complimented every dish. We have eaten at a lot of Michelin star restaurants and I cannot believe that this place hasn t received that honor yet. Our meal last night was better than many 2-star establishments that we have frequented. I wish we lived closer so that we could become regulars. Service was excellent with every server was able to describe the dishes in great detail. Cocktails were delicious too!
this restaurant has maintained world class quality for over a decade. on par with any michelin starred vancouver restaurants and should be recognized that way. worth a visit for any special occasion. From the menu, the squid and oysters are a must!
oyster is a must try
I came here on the recommendation of a chef at a French restaurant in Vancouver. Since it was my first time, I tried the chefs menu. The combination of sherbet and herbs in the yellowtail was so delicious that it became my favorite. Until I ate the oysters, I thought it would be a waste to put cream on top of them, but these were so delicious. The seasoning starts to get stronger after the salmon, so its delicious, but it gets stuck in my stomach and the second half was a bit painful. Both the bread and foie gras were delicious, so next time I would like to order a la carte. The female server had a very nice smile, and when I told her that I wasnt very good at English, she chose easy-to-understand English and made me happy. thank you very much.
What dining experience, sitting out on the indoor patio area was so pleasant. The service too notch, the details to the BC wine pairing wigth chefs dinner was spot on. The Pinot Noir Rose was both of our favorite. The highlights for us were the Hamachi w/ coconut lemongrass sorbet, insane flavor explosion. The Tartare with Toro was velvet. The dessert trio were also so tasty. Oh and that cheese for the bread course, wild flavor profile, not a big soft cheese fan but with the tomato powder was phenomenal. Its about the experience, book the reservation, drop the loot, your partner will thank you!
Choose L Abattoir when you want an extra special meal that won t disappoint! We enjoyed the sensational Chef s Tasting Menu! The progression of creativity and attention to detail throughout the 10 courses left us wanting to experience more ( even though we were full up!) The smoked and poached salmon was the best I ve ever eaten it was sublime! Great staff who served with a friendly and welcoming efficiency. Couldn t fault it! I think I see a Michelin star heading your way very soon!
Exceptional ! Fabulous sommelier, delicious food, and professional yet friendly service. From the pasta to the steak, the buratta and artichoke. Everything was yummy and had a great complexity of ingredients. This place is special. The dessert of banana was wow. Its simply amazing. This place is aust. We loved it.
Great service, local ingredients, all really good. Sablefish and octopus were great.
We decided to try it on a whim. It was on our list to visit during our trip to Vancouver. We had no reservation, but the host was incredibly accommodating and got us a beautiful table in their covered patio. Service was absolutely first class and the food fresh, tasteful and beautiful! If you can, so give it a try. You will not regret it. Dietary restrictions: One in our party had a dairy allergy. Waiter and chef were very accommodating with alternatives.
Expensive, but very, very nice.
An iconic restaurant in Vancouver with an intimate and gorgeous interior. The hospitality and food are among the top in the city.
Food was yummy and service was ok. We ordered the chefs menu, it took 30 minutes for a server to even ask us what we ordered??? After that our moods were instantly lifted when the food came out. Until it started to take over THIRTY minutes between dishes. Once I finally said something the server just walked away, once I was in the bathroom they finally had a good response and said all of our dessert was ready at once as we had asked after being there for so long. As a compensation they brought us Amaro instead of asking if they could comp anything on such an expensive meal that was spaced out so poorly? Our salmon plates were hot but the salmon itself was luke warm at best. Then we waited over 30 minutes for anything else. The place had all the potential but poor delivery. Disappointing.
Very lovely interior and atmosphere at the front bar. Service was incredibly slow, our appetizers came out around ten minutes apart and digestifs took over fifteen minutes. Our server also felt rushed and didn t have a great grasp on the menu. We were there celebrating a birthday and there was no extra attention that was given to the ocassion. Thus, I recommend the restaurant but for a casual drink and tapa rather than a full meal I think it would have been a much better experience then.
Exceptional! The Sable Fish was a saffron Indian fusion that blew my mind. Staff were awesome as well. Highly recommend
Not too impressed by the food/tasting menu. Comparing to other restaurant with same price level, tasting menu is just at meh level: bread was not fresh, hard to chew, each dish is finger bite size, but 15-20min wait in between (???) cocktail is kinda basic. Menu is not creative, sense the laziness from the chef(team) not sure if they short, the wait in between is quite annoying.
Extremely disappointed with the tasting menu for a group private dining. Nothing to write home about, especially dessert. It s just whipped cream with a cheese flavor. Very uninspired. Won t go back again.
A favorite spot for a nice evening out. This is my second time coming, they are very reliable in making their fish and they are known for their bread with their dip and it s definitely delicious and I would 100% recommend Had their steak once as well and it was delicious In the summertime, you can enjoy the small patio, but at anytime of the year the tables in the back of the restaurant, I set in a gorgeous area, filled with windows is, both the ceiling, and one wall are just windows
Every single bite has so much thought and flavor put into it that I cannot form the perfect words to describe their greatness. On top of that, we were seated on the second level looking upon the bar which was seriously the best place in the house and provided all the ambience we needed for the night. Our waitress, Jamie, and the sommelier (I forgot to get his name ) were always on top of giving their best recommendations for flavors and pairings. We traveled all the way from Oregon for our anniversary and I would easily return any other time of the year.
Food is very good. Wine selection is extensive. The atmosphere and vibe are nice. However, I would say the service quality is not good compared to other restaurants of this price tag and positioning that Ive been to. Water is not filled often enough, say yes but didnt bring what we nicely asked, had to ask 2 or 3 times. Some kind of like warm, and phoning in kind of service.
So good. Highly recommend
I want to premise by saying that quality and presentation/attention to detail of food was excellent; especially great were the bread, foie gras, and the lamb. However, the choice of desserts was very limited and there were not light options that go well with the dinner. My two very disappointing notes are the following: 1) the acoustic was terrible, and indeed it was so loud we could barely hear each other at the table; 2) even though waiting stuff was cordial, we waited about 45 minutes between appetisers and mains, which is absolutely unacceptable. We received somewhat of an apology and they offered a small glass of iceweine as well as the palate cleanser from the tasting menu, but that is not enough. If they don t fix this, they will never earn a Michelin star. Would I go back? Given here in Vancouver there are better options (Saint Lawrence or Le Crocodile), I highly doubt it.
I have a review that needs explaining. Firstly, the people I went to dinner with had awesome food and drinks. Myself not so much, Drinks, fantastic! The dish I ordered wasnt right. HOWEVER, the way the staff dealt with it was amazing. Immediately, they took the dish away, made sure i was ok, and made no scene about my dish not working. That is 5 star to me. Thank you!
Excellent we shared smoked trout, halibut and linkcod. Plus a bottle of wine. Definitely coming back. Delicious preparation.
Incredible dining experience. All the dishes looked and tasted incredible. Definitely a must try for Vancouver fine dining.
While the food tasted 5/5, it is the quality that I am doubtful about and hence the two stars. My spouse had the halibut and as soon as we exited the restaurant he started feeling uneasy in his tummy. A few hours later he was puking his guts out and had diarrhoea. This went on for entire night. I can t blame it on anything else as this was literally the only meal which he ate out in last 3 days.
Bread service, baked oysters, fois grae, lamb and halibut paired with a half bottle and pastries. Absolutely superb.
One of the best meals we ve had in a long time! Service was impeccable
Too fancy for such an unremarkable food
This was our second time at the restaurant and having the Tasting Menu. Both times the staff welcoming us in and getting us situated were attentive and friendly. Our servers were knowledgeable and paced our meal at a leisurely pace. The cocktails are inventive and tasty. Each course of the tasting menu was delicious but the oysters remain a favourite. Dessert was fabulous. We will definitely return and most likely have the Tasting Menu yet again. The photos do not do the food justice. It is dark in the restaurant which sets a nice ambiance but not the greatest for taking photos.
Latest: emailed management twice using the email in the comments below and NEVER receive any follow-up from the restaurant. Very disappointed in how they handle the experience of their customers. We dine in and sat at the bar for dine-out Vancouver. We ordered two sets of dine out menu plus a plate of baked oysters during Happy hour. The food was tasty and service was welcoming. Unfortunately, my friend and I came home to diarrhea and vomiting. We suspect that the oysters is not fresh. I tried to call the restaurant several times later the same evening hoping to let them know about the Oysters, but they must ve been too busy and no one picks up the phone.
My wife and I came down for a trip and ate here on our last night. We actually had a discussion at the end of the meal and debated if it was the best restaurant weve ever been to and we agreed it was! We got the bread, baked oysters, stable fish and then banoffee for dessert. Everything was 10/10. The wine 10/10. Atmosphere, service and everything else 10/10. Will come back for sure!
For the hype, this was a let down. I had the fois gras to start and was disappointed. It was bland, lacking in any flavor despite the silky texture. The halibut was perfectly cooked but had bones in it. That being said, the service was outstanding and the sommelier recommended a delicious wine to pair with the meal
I had high hopes for L Abattoir based on the menu, but was only cautiously optimistic because of some reviews on this site, and I m glad my hopes weren t too high. When we were seated, we were told there were two chef s tasting menus left, so we should decide if we wanted that option or a la carte. Five minutes later, another couple was seated who immediately asked for and were given the last two remaining chef s menus. Not a great look for the waitstaff service, but fine. We opted for a mix of mostly entrees and a main depending on how full we were. We also ordered two glasses of white wine, followed by a bottle. At least 6 other tables received their bread service before we received ours - it was about 25 minutes after we were seated and had ordered before we received any food. The bread was great, as was the high end pizza cheese that came with it. The wait time between our first pair of entrees and our second pair was at least another 20 minutes. In the meantime, the sommelier poured our white wine into my sparkling wine and barely apologized for the mistake. The wines we had, at the recommendation of the sommelier, paired reasonably well with our dishes. Of all the entrees we ordered, the baked oysters were the most disappointing. They were almost flavorless and just not that thrilling. The squid, hamachi, and foie were all far better. After we finally received our main, our plates were cleared, some time past, and our server finally wandered over to ask if we were ready for our bill. I asked to see the dessert menu, she said that they had booked a table right after us, and we couldn t stay at our table to enjoy dessert. If we wanted dessert, we would need to move to the bar. Umm no, thank you, we will not be giving you any more money. Four hundred dollars for lazy service and not even dessert, because your kitchen was so slow and because you don t have a solid understanding of your diners behaviors. Save your money for a better restaurant that will treat you like a valued customer.
Food is creative and very very enjoyable. Drinks are well made as well. They updated their menu once in awhile and thats great cause they experiment! They might close early if it is a slow day so best to call ahead if you are coming in late. Drinks are good as well. Nothing to complain about.
I d give it no star if I could ! A very disappointing experience, I just could not believe the food that was placed in front of us! Tasteless unprofessionally prepared! And of course they charged so much money because it s supposed to be a high end restaurant but nothing starting from the food the location the interior design the lighting and even the staff ; nothing was pleasing. I couldn t be more disappointed. For a French restaurant I mean put some effort please! I feel terribly sorry to have brought my partner here for his birthday. It looked and felt like we were in a burger place with unclassy music and experimental food. In a small space it felt like we were on blind date with other the people sitting next to us that s how close the tables were placed next to each other. So much for French culture! Get your staff in a neat clean uniform. Something that s presentable visually Will never go back. forget about the money; that was a waste of my time I will never get back!
My husband and I celebrated a very special moment yesterday evening at LAbattoir and it was truly excellent in every regard. The service and team at LAbattoir were very kind and knowledgeable, and the food tasted as good as it looked. Rich, indulgent but also delicate (we had the oyster, artichoke salad, foie, halibut and pasta). I have always loved dining at LAbattoir and I certainly hope the team receives even more Michelin recognition this year as it would be very well deserved. I highly recommend LAb to anyone local or visiting Vancouver.
Response to the manager: A. I was told there were no other alternative courses. Therefore I wasnt given an option. B. I did have the dessert that was already included with the menu, no pre-dessert C. I did mention the drink that was offered to me and am thankful for that. D: I was told that the main meal, which I did not eat, was not able to be removed from the bill... we did pay for the drinks that we drank minus the one that was offered to us. Their response further proves my point that the restaurant is too good for its customers. I have eaten in many fine dinning restaurants and have never felt this way! I will not be contacting your restaurant, nor will I ever return. Its decent but not GREAT! The managers customer service isnt #1 so that severely tarnishes my experience. Long story short, I couldnt eat one of the meals so I asked for a different one as a replacement, which they couldnt accommodate, so I said no worries and asked the meal to be discounted and apparently that wasnt possible either... Was given a drink but the whole situation was very off-putting. I wont be returning. Our server was amazing though! :D
Nice Good Excellent
I accompanied a friend to this restaurant where we opted for the chefs menu paired with Canadian wine. The total bill, including tips, amounted to $700. At $350 per person, having experienced several top French restaurants globally, I anticipated a certain level of quality. However, the reality fell short. The ambiance was overly loud with tables crammed closely, offering no privacy. The food was disappointingly average, lacking any standout courses, while the wine selection failed to complement most dishes. Service was minimal, with waitstaff providing cursory explanations and seldom checking in. Despite the steep $100 tip, the experience left me questioning its high ratings. Id recommend opting for a genuine Michelin 3-star experience, even at $900 per person, as it undoubtedly offers superior value compared to this establishment.
Went with my friend the day before Valentines Day for the tasting menu. Service was average, but kudos to the lovely hostess who acknowledged special request for our reservations, and wondering why the dining room servers not paying attention to details like the hostess. Overall the tasting menu was of average quality, nothing of vow factors comparing to my first dining experience years ago here. In particular, the main course European Sea Bass was quite dry, and not sure why it was complemented with chickpeas and salsa like sauces, not quite the chemistry! We have asked the bus boy for taking our picture, but he said he would ask our server who showed up only when serving us the 3 courses, and at the end, the bus boy took the picture for us. Yes, we completed the 3 courses and the pictures, but we both didnt feel completed with a good dining experience!
Came for happy hour and will do it again!! Amazing and yummy
Excellent food and staff.
Fancy spot. kind staff with knowledgeable wine pairings. The food was good, unfortunately I was unimpressed with the food. It was delicious, but the portions size was a joke. Paid a premium dollar and left with a grumbling stomach.
Great meal and drinks.
LAbattoir is an exceptional dining experience. The staff is incredibly attentive, the wine selection is superb, and the dishes are outstanding. The branzino and tuna tataki are flavorful, and the gnocchi is a pleasant surprise. Dont miss out on their desserts theyre simply delightful.
I experienced terrible racism at this restaurant. When we arrived there were a lot of empty seats. The staff gave us a seat right next to the bathroom entrance. I asked to change seats, but the staff member made the excuse that everyone had reservations, but many of the seats remained empty until we finished eating. They never once asked if we needed anything or didnt even care. For the first time in over 20 years of living in Vancouver, I experienced the worst racism I have ever experienced at this restaurant. I would never recommend this restaurant and would never go there. Its hard to believe that in 2023, such base racism still exists. I would like to say this to the owner and all employees of this restaurant. If you havent received an education, go to school and get an education again. And dont teach that to your children. I honestly wish restaurants like yours would disappear from Vancouver.
We were very exited to visit this restaurant for the first time, especially having a special occasion- my friend s birthday. The room itself is cool and I liked the layout of the restaurant with two levels and bar in between. We went for dine out which was just alright. The trout and sea bass were definitely the best parts of it. Desserts weren t impressive at all, especially sticky toffee pudding - which tasted like a banana bread. Service wise, we got a nice waitress but the support team the lady who was running food that night didn t bother to put at least some kind of smile on her face. It was just a bit awkward when she brought a cake with the candle and just dropped it on the table . Just not the type of experience you expect from such a famous restaurant.
My first experience with dine out vancouver was at L abbatoir in Gastown. For this event, each person can select one entree, main, and dessert ($65/pax). P.S. Funnily enough, we all ordered the same mains . True to the stereotype of the French dousing everything in butter, each dish might look small but pack a punch due to how rich and decadent they tasted. The dishes we got are: 1. Bread service 2. Tuna tataki 3. Ocean trout mi-cuit 4. European sea bass 5. Sticky toffee pudding 6. Dark chocolate ganache Overall verdict? While everything was scrumptious, I won t be in a hurry to come back. It was a very enjoyable experience, but nothing stood out except for the bread (slide). If do come here, make sure you order the bread ($7). Super flakey, buttery, and served with their house made butter, it was well worth the extra charge (and calories). Service was professional without being overbearing. Atmosphere was surprisingly casual and a little bit noisy Vegetarian options: Quite a few vegan options
Had a great experience. You come to these kinds of restaurants for the service, presentation, and experience. Definitely one of those restaurants where you eat with your eyes first. Show off to your friends, or impress a girl that youre a food snob. Absolutely a great place to take your date, fine dine with manners, and not overeat, so you can still feel sexy. Excellent cocktails menu, definitely recommend starting with that. Main courses all looked and sounded great - Id recommend the sea bass. It was so buttery. Our party of four booked our reservation specifically for the dine out festival. We were interested in the three course dining experience. When we were seated, the hostess did not mention dine out. We had to ask about it, and then were given the dine out menu. Dine out menu is very good value, and it would have been much more expensive if we had ordered the same courses a la carte. Dine out is a great opportunity for those to try out restaurants where they normally wouldnt have the opportunity to. After our dessert course and final drinks, our server brought our bill over and advised us of the 20% auto gratuity that was added. We were surprised to find that our party of 4 would require auto gratuity. We felt that if had dined off the dine out menu, auto gratuity would not have been the case. Be aware of this practice.
Everything was perfect!!!
Delicious food. Well made and a balance of flavors. Great selection for wine and drinks. Parking: Hard to find. Pay street parking $2 to $3/hr depending how close parking is. Can be hard to find.
Came here because I ve heard many great things and thought dineout was the perfect opportunity to try them out. When you walk in, the place is quite intimate and perfect for a date night. The service was the first thing I noticed, our server was very attentive and right as we finished dishes, they were taken away. Food pacing was also nicely done where we werent waiting too long for anything. I think this is one of my favourite things about L Abbatoir. As for the food, we started with the L Abbatoir bread service. It s a Fantail roll, which is bread that s layered with butter - soft in the middle with a good bite on the outside, pulling apart by layers. It came with a side of sauvagine cheese that was garnished with tomato powder and few other things. This was honestly a must order for me, my boyfriend and I couldn t get over how delicious it was. We were both impressed - it was such an indulgent, buttery treat but probably my favourite item out of all the food we had! Back to dineout, we got the sunchoke gratin and ocean trout mi-cuit for appetizers. The sunchoke gratin was very average, I wouldn t recommend it as its nothing special, especially for the price-point. The trout on the other hand was cooked perfectly. It was very tender and I felt the side of potato escabeche was a unique but well-paired combo - acidity always helps with fishiness, especially when the fish is a bit raw . This is an appetizer I would recommend to the seafood lovers out there. For entree s we got the pork and chicken pithivier and European sea bass. I m more of a seafood person, so I liked the European sea bass a lot more. I honestly didn t think the pork sausage and chicken went well together, it was in larger chunks and not very flavourful - thank god they had a sauce to go with it. The pie outside crust could ve been more crisp, just seemed flat and chewy. The sea bass was simple, I think it was pan seared or shallow fried and simply seasoned with salt. The additions to the plate were well done - roasted red pepper sauce added a mild kick of spiciness, the potatoes were perfectly crunchy and the humbolt squid was very tender. Sometimes squid can be a bit chewy when overcooked. The only thing was the skin of one of the fish was too charred, but not a big deal. Lastly, for dessert we got the sticky toffee pudding and dark chocolate ganache. Both desserts were good, but the sticky toffee pudding was a banger. It tasted like banana bread with toffee syrup and you d think it d be way too sweet, but it wasn t. The mascarpone helped balance the sweetness and added creaminess so it was sweet and indulgent, but just the right amount. I d definitely order that again in a heartbeat. The dark chocolate ganache was a significantly lighter portion, but it looked really pretty. The raspberry sorbet went well with the dark chocolate, but I was quite impressed by the earl grey jelly (or something like that). They did a really good job of bringing out the floral taste within the earl grey and paired well with the dessert as a whole. Overall, I m a fan of this place. Not all the dishes hit home, but the ones that did were amazing (bread, trout and the sticky toffee pudding). It s not a cheap place to dine and it s reflected in the ambiance, service and quality of food. This is definitely a great place when they have promo s like dineout, but I can also see myself returning for a date night or celebration. I had a great dining experience and if you re willing to spend the money, I don t think you ll be disappointed.
Ohhhhhhh what a delight. This is a great place for a date. Food is excellent, service top notch and the room and vibe is so sexy.
Very good. This is one of those restaurants where the menu doesn t look great but anything you order will be 5/5 perfect
I can t believe I waited this long to come here. Everything I had exceeded all expectations. I m not even a fan of oysters, but the way they do it here loss for words.
For a French restaurant of this caliber, I expected better. For some dishes, such as the aburi tuna, the knifework was sloppy or the flavours were a bit off. I did really enjoy the salmon and the gnocchi dishes though. They did a good job with the cooking of the seafood. The desserts were great. I loved their banana bread, but the toffee was too sweet. The music was just very unfitting for the environment. Rap in an up scale French restaurant? Vegetarian options: Good vegetarian options
LAbattoir was a fantastic dining experience with very accommodating service by the staff. The food was also exquisite with little choice for food selection but the limited number made it easier for us to choose from. For appetizers: the baked oyster is something we were talked into getting and it was definitely worth it--very fatty with the truffle and garlic. We also ordered the Japanese hamachi which was also tasty (almost felt like a ceviche). We also got the bread and butter/tomato paste sauce which was tiny but delicious. For mains: we got the sablefish, bluefin tuna (highly recommend), steak (also highly recommend), and the gnocchi. The bluefin cuts were of great proportion for the price point. The steak was about 6oz split in half but cooked to perfection.
Decent overall but was expecting better from the Chefs menu. I found most sauces didnt go well with their dish. Service and desserts were good.
Came here one night for a birthday, we made reservations for the chefs menu, however upon being seated we were informed that they had already sold out of the chefs menu for the night. This was very disappointing because the chefs menu was the purpose of our visit, especially being for a birthday was a large disappointment. I dont really understand the point of the reservation system and requesting the chefs menu upon the reservation if they are going to sell out and not reserve it. We ended up ordering a la carte. We got the bread service, baked pacific oysters, terrine duck foie gras, sablefish, and steak diane. We also requested a wine pairing for each course from the sommelier. The bread service was phenomenal, it was like a croissant but had thin slices in it so its was very crunchy and it was accompanied with a very tart berry spread that was a delightful pairing. The baked oysters were not to my liking, it was very creamy and just not what I am used to for oysters. The foie gras was also a let down, it was very fruity and didnt really highlight the foie gras. It also came with a bunch of weird jellies and things that felt disconnected. This dish was primarily focused on presentation and not flavors. The sablefish was good but nothing special from any other restaurant. The steak diane was good, but it was served with 3 different types of sauces which again lead to a confusing, not cohesive dish. Overall this place was just OK. My favorite dish was the bread service. Everything else fell flat. The sommelier was very pleasant and chose great wines for us. Again, was very disappointed with the miss on the chefs menu reservation. The restaurant made zero attempt to make up for not being able to deliver on our reservation. With all that, I dont really have much desire to revisit LAbattoir. At this price point I expect much more.
Everything about this restaurant was a step above - the service from each staff member was unpretentious and friendly, the food was top notch (the bread service, as many other reviewers have recommended, is a must get), the prices are reasonable given the high quality of the ingredients, and the restaurant design is unique and beautiful. This is one of the best restaurants in Vancouver.
One of the best restaurants in Vancouver. The food was really good. We loved the smoked steelhead trout (with an incredible country loaf!) and the ice cream cake.
Have been there before seems to be good but not fantastic. Food seems to be slipping. House suggested beverage was uninspiring. Wine selection fantastic.
Labbitoir is by far one of my most favourite restaurants in the city. My husband and I held our wedding rehearsal dinner here years ago and have re-visited recently and are STILL blown away by how amazing it is (just very sorry we havent come back more often). We dared to show up Friday Dec 23 at opening without a reservation because we happen to be in the neighbourhood and did secure a nice non-bar table for our meal. We started with foie gras and baked oysters for entrees. The best baked oysters I have ever had anywhere in the world. My husband and I both got a different fish main, to die for. However, I think dessert was the real kicker, the mille feuille was exquisite. Despite being a fancy, now Michelin recommended, restaurant, they NEVER skimp on the portions so I always leave full and satisfied. We really like sitting the solarium back area as it is a quieter brighter vibe there.
Go to spot for casual French spot. Great vibes and cocktails
Ok experience. No tasting menu if didn t book ahead, so ordered a few things to share from the a la carte, but choices were limited. Appetizers were more memorable than the mains. People rave about the bread, which was nice, but I didn t come to a bakery.
The food and service were good, however it s pretty loud. Could be our seating area. My favourite part of the meal was the dessert.
We came in for dine-out and found the serving sizes very small and overpriced. There was a 20% gratuity included despite the website clearly saying Beverages, tax and gratuity are extra. The service was pretty casual and almost infrequent considering. I ordered a Tanqueray and tonic and our server charged me the more expensive one on the menu without clarifying or asking. Overall disappointing, but the vibe of the restaurant was good.
Food is good. Execution and technique is there. The flavours do not explode in your mouth though.
The chef menu was a wonderful taste adventure led by many guides. Each remove had its own person who explained the creations. The cocktails were a sensory experience themselves, but the wine pairings with dinner were worthwhile. I appreciated the primarily local ingredients and vineyards. The only thing that detracted from the experience was being out by the windows was a little cool for the dress I wore; a light shawl or long sleeves would have been ideal. The space with all the glass and courtyard was still enjoyable.
Thid restaurant is increíble. Food is top-notch and the chef is very creative. I love the wine pairing option. I think the flavours are worth the price. Great for celebrating something or dropping in for a date.
The service is very good, I can give it full marks. The environment is a bit crowded. There were three appetizers and two main dishes. The only thing I thought was delicious was the quail for the main dish, which was full of flavor and properly seasoned. But it s really not as fancy as what Xiaohongshu claims. The three kinds of bread before the meal are very ordinary, most of the dishes are salty, and the taste is ordinary. Two people ordered 250 and were not full. The main menu items are too It s less, and you don t have much choice if you want to eat more, which is a bit sad. The appetizer portions are super mini, and they are thoughtfully paired with a lot of bread for you to try. The foie gras as an appetizer really looked like the packaged foie gras in French supermarkets. It was not tasty and salty. I did not mean to discredit this restaurant. In addition, my companions who were traveling with me could not accept the half-rare pork chop as their staple food. The meat only looked the same on the outside. It was layer-cooked, with not even a hint of cooked meat fiber in it. You can eat medium-rare steak, but I really don t dare to eat pork chop. Do all foreigners eat it this way? My friend said the pork chops smelled weird. But fortunately, the restaurant handles the food very well. They will also ask if they are satisfied with the food, and then cook it thoroughly according to the friends preference. Thank you, I think everything can be improved. Apart from that, I really recommend the quail. It s a pity that it s off menu.
The highlight of our trip to Van City. Will def come back again and again
one more favorite restaurant in van. flavors were perfect, i can say they handle the steak better than Vancouver any restaurant, even steak house. // Love the oyster (I m not in to oysters) but they made it taste like escargots à la bourguignonne, love it!
We just got married at LAbattoir and they absolutley exceeded our expectations. Lainey was a pleasure to coordinate with, and the staff were so accommodating and attentive the entire night. Our ceremony and reception were gorgeous, and our guests are still taking about how delicious the food was and how beautiful the space is. The staff also care deeply about reducing food waste and giving back to the Gastown and DTES communities, which we appreciate and value. If you are looking for a venue to host a small, intimate wedding, we highly recommend LAbattoir. Thank you to everyone at LAbattoir for making our day so perfect!
I reluctantly visited her at the behest of a dear friend, I say reluctant because normally I wouldnt steer in this direction for the type of food I enjoy. Im always extremely happy to be surprised and impressed, and this was one of those occasions. Walking in feels very warm and comforting, like slipping into a study filled with treasured books but instead filled with delicious bites. I had the lamb chop and ordered the oysters, which both were prepared perfectly and had an incredible amount of flavor. Will have to definitely stop in next time I visit Vancouver. Highly recommend.
Perfect for a business meeting.
If you are looking for a high-quality French restaurant, you cannot miss this one. This restaurant offers excellent service and delicious food, making your dining experience even more perfect. Here, you can taste some carefully crafted French cuisine, some of which are designed by the chef himself on the set menu. These dishes are very tasty, and every bite can make you feel the chefs heart and passion. One dish that is highly recommended is the Pacific oysters, which are fresh, delicious, and sweet, and an absolute must-try dish. In addition, the service at the restaurant is also very good, with the waiters always being very enthusiastic and attentive, making you feel at home. Overall, this restaurant is a great choice, whether you are dining with friends or sharing food with family, it is a great choice.
We had the trout, the halibut & salmon. All very tasty and well prepared. Also a quite extensive whine list. Unfortunately they don t serve espresso. But a great to eat in Gastown.
Great service, good food and delicious food
Fabulous place, the stand out meal for our 10 day trip from England. The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable on ingredients and dishes, a lovely ambience, terrific food (the quail starter is off the chart), great wine list and Sommelier. The only thing we couldn t understand is how this place doesn t have a Michelin Star?? It ticks every box -trust me.
Overall, a great dinner service! I would recommend this to anyone who s looking for a nice date night spot. The baked oysters are an absolute must.
Food was good but not worth the price. Better and cheaper fine dining elsewhere in Vancouver. Service was also weird. We had several different servers - they were nice enough but the experience didn t feel very personal :s
Food and service overall was great. I really believe that this restaurant can take it to the next level or even Alo restaurant level. They have the staff and quality ingredients. Maybe just some more constructive feedback when testing dishes for the tasting menu. I was disappointed by the lingcod which was visually appealing and had brussel sprouts and caviar, but basically tasted like a boring butter and fish. The shrimps flavor in the soup seemed washed out and I wasnt sure what direction this dish was going. The lamb was interesting. I think the centre was usually a medallion and kind of wrapped in a lamb shawarma type minced lamb?? Wine pairing was good for the most part and I could ask some questions about wine with the sommelier .
It was a lovely summer evening that we enjoyed in the outdoor covered seating area at LAbattoir. The service was impeccable, the food delicious and appropriate size, and the wine selection and cocktails divine. Wonderful classic artistic presentation, typical elegant French attention to sauces and presentation. A dozen steps or so from Gastown and Chinatown, so a great way to end a day or start an evening in quintessential Vancouver. Earns its Michelin rating with every plate that leaves the kitchen
Food was great and the staff were very friendly, but I can feel my server tried hard to upswell. I didn t like this pressure. The default tipping option starts at 19% and 25% so prepare your cash accordingly.
Food was unbelievably good! Service was perfect. Music was a little loud but our table was near the speaker.
This place omg!!!! This by far is one of the best meals I have had in my life. And given the amount of places I have eaten at that says something. This place legit sent us to heaven and then got us back so we could eat more. The baked oysters - to die for. Nothing could ever match up. The pork tenderloin and sable fish were amazing and even the dessert we had with a caramel base was delishhhhh. I would go to Vancouver just to eat those oysters again. If you re in town you absolutely cannot miss this place. Take this from a food lover and someone who has done her share of experimenting all across the world. Go here!!!!
Amazing Food and good options for drinks.
Ive had the pleasure of dining at this establishment multiple times, and on each occasion, Ive been consistently impressed by the exceptional cuisine as well as the sincerely kind and attentive staff. Despite having a few challenging allergies, the staff has consistently gone above and beyond to accommodate me, ensuring that I feel completely comfortable and included. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for their hospitality.
Amazing food and service! Best French cocine in the city
We ordered one portion of each dish for three people to eat, and the steak and quail were both amazing, even though the menu that day was only limited to that day.
What a wonderful night ! Delicious cocktails to start and the food was even better. We had the foie gras - simple, layered delicious and their baked oyster - easy to understand why its their signature dish as it was a mouthful of heaven ! We then split the days kitchen feature which was a ribeye with mushroom jus (Im simplifying) it was melt in your mouth decadence and paired so well with the lovely wine that was suggested. Food aside, what sets this place apart is the outstanding service! Attentive, friendly and you can see pride of work in everyone you encounter. These people take hospitality seriously. Special thanks to Prableen, Andrew and of course Jean Charles (JC) for taking such good care of us! Waiting on the summer menu to be back for a full meal but that doesnt mean I wouldnt pop by for oysters and drinks in the meantime!
A nice restaurant in Gas town, however I never get along with the name ! Hope it will be changed.
I sat at the bar and ordered 3-courses, I was served by the bartender (Caleb) who was an absolute GEM of a human. I gave him dealer s choice for all of my cocktails, and he did NOT disappoint. His breadth of knowledge and attention to detail was fantastic. The Maitre d and Andrew (self-proclaimed wine nerd) were also extremely welcoming and friendly. Each dish was presented so nicely, and tasted FANTASTIC. If you don t get to L Abattoir you ll be missing out.
an amazing dining experience - food, wine and service were wonderful. Wish I could give more than 5 stars!
We had an amazing time celebrating our anniversary at L Abattoir! We tried their 2010 prix fixe menu and everything on the menu was amazing. We also got the bread service and their signature baked oyster dish and both were divine! The highlight of the prix fixe menu for me was the Smoked ocean trout. I didn t love the Bete Noir but the carrot cake was too die for. I highly recommend giving them a visit!
Always great food!
I heard about this restaurant for so long and I love French food but for some reason never came around to trying until this year. They did not disappoint and they lived up to the hype. Exceeded it even. The first time I came my boyfriend took me for valentines and they had a set menu and everything was so delicious! They were still serving the baked oysters a La carte that night in addition to the Valentines menu and oh my I fell in love. I came back a couple months later just to eat the baked oysters! I ordered other things too of course and they were also so delicious. We didn t do the set menu the second time but I saw they had the millionaire shortbread on the set course and I really wanted to try it so I asked if I can have just that even though I did a La carte and not set menu. They agreed luckily and it just made my evening! I was so happy they did! Little things like that really go a long way. The millionaire shortbread was so good btw. I ll be back here many many times I love this restaurant so much. I love the Canadian twist they put on the French food, so unique and very BC. I ve been to many Michelin star restaurants in Europe and I feel this place deserves a Michelin star more than some of the Vancouver restaurants that did receive it. It s all about the details.
Jenna created such a warm and welcoming environment for me and my friends tonight! Great drinks great food and great vibes!
Great food, one of the fine dining restaurants where I felt I was getting my moneys worth. Great for special occasions.
Great experience and very nice staff
Delighted to have dined in this restaurant of great finesse, with real cooks who know how to cook!!! The only downside would be the foie gras which is more of a foie gras mousse... top service, we recommend ++++
Beyond happy that we chose to celebrate our anniversary this year with the chef s menu and BC wine pairing at L Abattoir. The food, service and atmosphere were all superb, and this was one of the top dining experiences of our life. In addition to the bread service (sooo good), the chef s menu consisted of 10 items - each one super delicious. It was truly challenging to pick our favourites. Definitely highly recommend the steak tartare, smoked steelhead trout, pacific oyster, lamb, and summer berry tart. I ve never eaten oysters before and the cooked oysters with truffle and garlic butter were so amazing that we will come back just to have them. The lamb was from another world. The berry tart is one of the most memorable desserts. One of the menu items was a gazpacho soup. At the beginning of the meal the server/host asked us if we had any allergies. I noted that I could not have tomatoes and that my partner would just eat my portion. I was not expecting any accommodations based on the information provided on the website in advance, and knowing that a lot of effort is placed in preparing each dish on the menu. The server informed us that the chef would be able to provide an alternative, a surprise dish for myself in place of gazpacho. The alternative turned out to be a refreshing and delicious hamachi. It was one of the highlights of the night. On top of this, the sommelier adjusted the wine pairing to ensure that I had a complimentary wine to accompany hamachi. Very heart warming. While each wine was nicely paired with the dishes, the Quails Gate 14 Chardonnay (Stewart Family Reserve) in particular stood out. The service was spot on throughout the entire evening - prompt, professional and personable. Every member of the team made us feel welcome and cared for. The overall ambiance was wonderful. We sat on the upper level, which was spacious and comfortable. The lights got dimmer as the night went on. We also enjoyed the soundtrack. While we have tasted chef menus at other high-end restaurants, this was the first instance where both my partner and I loved every single dish. The service and ambiance elevated the culinary experience. L Abattoir exceeded our expectations in every regard. Thank you for a wonderful time that we will cherish for years to come.
Beautiful restaurant with amazing food. Attended a wine tasting with a set menu, everything was superb.
Took my friend here from out of town to celebrate a special occasion. We loved it We had the laminated baguette with a cheese spread it was very delicious and fancier than any bread Ive ever had, so buttery! Also loved the light and healthy artichoke tart and then the buttery and kind of Indian flavored sablefish. I could eat this meal every month and not be sick of it. We shared the dessert feature, the ice cream tres leches and it was fresh, delicate and rich all I one. Everything was so good that my friend from Tennessee, a pescatarian, told me it was the best meal she had ever had. It was not purely French cuisine, its unique and inventive in its own right. Our servers were attentive and explained the dishes eloquently. Service friendly, prompt and courteous.
Great food as always
Weve often referred our clients to LAbattoir Restaurant for intimate weddings and elopements as we know that their food is not only spectacular, their service is even better. Weve had several recent experiences at this venue and each and every time they over delivered. Im very happy to say that we will continue to recommend them and are happy to be recommended by them as well. Quality service all around. As a professional wedding vendor, we notice that often the greatest impact is as a result of the venues service. LAbattoir impresses each and every time!
Big thanks to Lainey, Emma, and team for making our company retreat dinner LAbattoir a success. Their private room is beautiful and great for 30 people. The team was highly organized planning our event and the food and service night of were A+. Highly recommend hosting your event here - get the oysters!
Why you re not Michelin Starred is beyond me. I ve had the chef s menu twice now and have been blown away each time. Couple that with the premium wine pairing and you re in culinary nirvana! If I could give more than 5 stars on google I would. You have a life long patron here!
Loved it here! Great food, fantastic service and awesome ambiance!
This place deserves a Michelin star! Decided on the Chefs menu and everything was exquisite. I especially loved the gazpacho. It was so refreshing to have in between the many courses. Great food and great service. Prableen was wonderful and friendly. The sommelier Michelle did a fantastic job in pairing different wines with this amazing meal. Overall, an excellent experience. LAbattoir is definitely one of Vancouver s gems. Until next time.
One of the best tasting menus I have ever had. Pauline (I might have said that wrong) was fantastic, the wine pairings enhanced the meal, and elevated even higher. I could not recommend this place more!
Amazing food as always. My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary as we got married in their private dining room last year, sadly their service felt a little impersonal. Our waitress said very little to us and had to ask a couple of times for a wine pairing recommendation. Just disappointing with the service overall especially since we had such high praise for our experience with Lainey last year.
The place is nice, por server was really attentive, the food was good, I had a steak which was really good, there are some pastries that are really good but there was one that wasn t good at all. But overall it was pretty good
4.5 Had a delicious meal here, the baked oysters are definitely a highlight starter, but I also enjoyed the artichoke tart (a bit lighter and refreshing with the mixed greens on top). The gnocchi with mushrooms and fried sage had a wonderful flavor and texture, and the halibut with lemon buerre blanc was light and citrusy. The Mille Feuille was larger and more decadent that we were expecting, but the ice cream accompanying it was so good; definitely plenty to split among 2-4 people.
A Big thank you to Chad the host who took our rolling carry ons, which allowed us to wander Gastown and enjoy a few (too many) cocktails before ending the night at L Abattoir. Thank you also to Caleb who made our drinks and a special beef tartar appear from the chefs tasting menu. the perfect pre wedding de-stressor.
A bit overpriced but the dishes are very well prepared and presented! And also very delicious:) Friendly staffs and very nice atmosphere! Need to reserve in advance Food : 5/5
Quite a interest layout for this restaurant. The bar and the kitchen is downstairs and the seated area is upstairs. I would highly recommend the baked oysters (MP it was $50 when I went). The presentation and taste was really good. For the mains we got the sablefish and pork chop. I thought both were decent. It was a unique taste for sure. Last thing we ordered was the carrot ice cream cake and I thought that was a nice touch.
Great food and service! The 2010 prix fixe menu for $75 pp is well worth the price. Highly recommend the bête noire if you re a chocolate lover! Its rich taste with layers of texture is amazing
A great chefs menu and a fantastic wine selection. Its west coast food with a classical flair, and the sommeliers offer a truly outstanding experience. Highly recommended. Dietary restrictions: They offer many celiac friendly dishes
Food good but not great: dishes are trying to do too much & quality of ingredients can t shine through. Excellent service.
When I visit Vancouver, this is the one restaurant I visit every time. The food is exquisite, the cocktails are incredible the service though . It s the best there is. Jenna has been my host at the bar at each of my visits. She is the epitome of flawless service. It is rare to find someone so passionate about the food and drink they serve, who exudes kindness and a spirit of welcome that makes me feel like I m returning home. Phenomenal service and everything we ordered was amazing. We ordered the bread service (unreal), baked oysters ( ), beet carpaccio, the steak diane and the sablefish (and the carrot cake dessert). Servers and sommelier were so friendly and efficient, and truly every bite was a 10/10. Can t recommend this place enough!
Good, but not great. We chose L Abbatoir for a double date based on the favourable reviews but were let down by both the food and service for this calibre of dining establishment. Although we recognize some of our party was late to the 6:45pm reservation, we felt rushed from the beginning. The server rushed us to order food while we chose a bottle of wine. This was after we had ordered cocktails. When we asked for a few more minutes with the food menu he told us they had rebooked our table for 9pm, suggesting we had to order soon. We understand we cut into our allotted time given we were late, however the restaurant cleared as our reservation time progressed and there were a number of tables of varying size available around us. In our opinion the implied pressure to rush was done in poor taste, especially as the restaurant had table availability. On the food side, no sooner had the staff removed our appetizers/entrees, they arrived with our main plates which were lukewarm, suggesting the server was expediting the process and as a result the dishes had been sitting for some time. The entire evening seemed rushed, from the service to the food. Overall a disappointing experience for a $600 dinner ($150 pp) at a lauded restaurant.
Formerly a slaughterhouse, hence the name however it is not a steak house. Instead I feel that it s focussed on Canadian produce with French techniques - similar to Modern Australian. The size is intimate, with the kitchen and bar being downstairs whilst the dining area spread between upstairs and the back. I had to add the bread as an add-on to my course as I kept seeing it everywhere. The fan-like bread was a baguette-croissant hybrid with its crunchy texture and beautiful lamination to go with the cheese spread. I tend to be a tad bit skeptical with degustation portion sizes but I was full.. too full to finish the beautiful mille fuille. sigh. But props for the beautiful trout entree and lingcod main - those I did finish. Service was fantastic. Food was nicely paced and explained by the waitstaff. Shoutout to Brandon for giving me foodie tips for Vancouver as it was my first time there.
Good experience for date night
Bravo! Outstanding experience and top marks on creativity and balance throughout the chef menu. Highly recommend the BC wine pairing. Andrew the sommelier elevated the whole experience with his passion and knowledge.
It s a lovely space with good ambiance. Server was super attentive, kind and helpful and staff all around are great. Food was of very good quality, however I found their style of cuisine overly complex in flavour to the point that it tasted muddled & overpowering. I had the foie gras terrine which was superb and I recommend! Sablefish I couldn t eat. It was incredibly rich in dairy which I m not used to with seafood & had salty, sour, hot, and milky flavours to it. Fish felt saturated in heavy cream and it was just all too much. Everything on the menu had a lot of dairy in it too so a heads up - very RICH dishes here. It s good but your body does need to be in the mood for it!
4.2/5 Nice ambience and spacious interior. They have seats at the back and upstairs. Professional staff. The entire course was overall salty. We asked to reduce sodium level, it was much better but still salty. The complimentary bread was too hard to chew. Hard and thick shell. Inside was soft tho. The dip that came with it made it taste like pepperoni pizza. It was cool. Amuse bouche was interesting. The salmon caviar was the best. Fried shiso was too oily and didn t have much shiso flavour. Loved the oyster. Best dish of the night. The rest were good but not mind blowing. It s worth a try.
An upscale experience, maybe fine dining. Started with scallops followed by steak Diane, 2nd to none. Also enjoyed a taste of the sable, wonderful. Ask for the main room evening, back room for lunch maybe. Best to car service, rather than risk parking nearby. Wheelchair accessibility: Looks difficult.
We had the chief menu $160 and food is a bit disappointed. The service was fine but Im sorry to say that the food is not worthy the price we paid. One of the dish we all (4 of us) tasted like a burnt food and we told the staff but no feedback. The only food we like the best is the bakery items. Thats what I want to say about the meal.
Never had such an unforgettable night of pure gluttony! Service was on point! Not to much and not to little! They new what they were serving and they made the food with such finesse it made my tastebuds wanting more! If you have some money to spend you should treat yourself and a specail someone!
Their drinks were great, and the service! I think the food overall was very good but the dessert wasnt to my liking but was presented very nicely
A fantastic experience - we decided to try out the prix fixe menu for our first foray at labbatoir, and we were not disappointed - beet root carpaccio, smoked trout, ling cod, pork belly, chocolate and mille fieull. All delicious offerings - our sommelier was exceptional, pairing each course with a thoughtful, great wine, and he went the extra mile to ensure the experience was a good one knowing that we were sharing courses as couples. We opted for the optional truffle risotto which, while flavourful, unfortunately was undercooked. They gave us a discount for the botched order, though we would have preferred a replacement and been glad to pay full price. A minor hiccup in an otherwise great meal. Well go again!
