We are Vancouver's only full service Indigenous restaurant. We specialize in wild fish, free range and/or organic and wild game meats. We bake bannock fresh daily. In our small and casual bistro everyone is welcome as they are. Reservations are always recommended.
Salmon n’ Bannock is a wonderful experience from start to finish. The service is some of the best I’ve experienced in Vancouver. The staff are very friendly and they do a fantastic job explaining the menu. And the food? Exceptional. The Sablefish and Bison pot roast are incredible! Be sure to try the cedar jelly with your bannock!
As a first timer in Vancouver, I wanted to make sure to try some of the local First Nations’ fare. I am part Taino Arawak, so I don’t share the same foods as they do. I wanted to learn about it by trying it first hand. This place did not disappoint! Every bite of food was delicious, and I truly loved the information shared with me about the owner and the local bands. My waiter was kind and made sure to chat with me since I was eating solo. I highly recommend this restaurant- especially the salmon mousse, bannock, and bison pot roast. Insanely delicious!!
This restaurant is wonderful. I came to Vancouver for vacation and wanted to interact with some of the Indigenous culture. I was shocked to hear this is the only brick and mortar restaurant in all of Vancouver fully owned and operated by Indigenous staff. The food is beautifully presented and very fresh. It's not overpowered with seasonings, the flavors are subtle, and everything is delicious. I loved that the playlist was Indigenous music as well, and the staff were kind enough to share the name of the playlist so I could explore the music more on my spotify later. Truly a great culturally rich experience. I hope this business can grow and thrive!
Had an excellent night out enjoying Indigenous Cuisine presented in a French style of cooking. I had 3 different appetizers, pemmican blueberry mouse, game sausage, bone marrow which was rich and flavourful be sure to mix onto the arugula and eat on a cracker. I had a sable fish main course and my guest chose the wild rice risotto. Our meals were coupled with a N’Kmep Rose, and local ipa brew for my guest. I unfortunately skipped dessert after filling up on appetizers and will need to return as it was difficult making a decision with so much variety. This is a very cosy, personal, and calm atmosphere and beautiful charming staff members. Salmon n Bannock has always been a wonderful treat and experience for myself and very special friends❤️🦅🇨🇦
Salmon and Bannock offers an unforgettable dining experience. The flavors are rich and authentic, showcasing the best of Indigenous cuisine. The bison dish is incredibly flavorful and tender. The bannock is a perfect accompaniment, adding a lovely touch. The cozy atmosphere and attentive service make this a must-visit in Vancouver.
An amazing experience. So grateful we went. It is now my new tradition with my daughter for her birthday. The staff. The food. The atmosphere. The fun facts you can read. A learning experience. Vegetarian options for me. My daughter loved her salmon burger. The desert was divine. A local business that definitely needs to be supported! Thank you!
I was visiting Vancouver from Germany and wanted to acknowledge the local indigenous culture and history. So having lunch at Salmon 'n Bannock was an obvious choice to me. I had the sockeye salmon on wild rice and some beautiful veggies, and the bannock bread with butter. This was so delicious. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It was not too busy, the waiters were very kind and took some time to introduce the menu to me. While I was waiting for the food, I was given the "Sixties Scoop" picture book by the owner, Inez Cook. Overall, the experience was worth the money. I‘d definitely revisit should I return to Vancouver.
What a wonderful experience. We were greeted and made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived. The decor and ambience as well as the music was inviting and quite beautiful. The staff were well informed of the menu and gave us good advice. We both enjoyed the Land and Sea menu and the portions were formidable and delicious. The history of the establishment and its owner was moving and we will definitely return in the future. Thank you making us feel welcome.
Amazing service and out of this world food.
Celebrated my birthday here and the service was so accommodating to our partys needs and created a memorable experience for us. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was fantastic. Thank you for a great birthday!!
Enjoyed a nice dinner celebrating a birthday. Service was outstanding. We did need to wait for our reserved table due to the previous party finishing up. Not a lot of space to wait inside but staff were accommodating. They made us feel very welcome and did a great job explaining all the interesting dishes. The Salmon burger was very satisfying, although my sweet potatoes fries were a tad soggy. The other dishes at our table all looked very appetizing. The staff made the night special with a tasty dessert to share for the birthday girl. Thanks for the experience.
food was awesome , order the drink , didnt taste sweet but when i drink it with the food it was soo good .. good match .. everything was good . loved it
The food and the service was amazing! Recommend the bison pot roast!
Great service, excellent food. The elk game sausage and bison are especially tasty. The bannock is hefty, and the cedar jelly unparalleled.
Five stars, without a doubt. Great food, friendly service, really cool atmosphere... Only downside is that the tables are book for 2 hours and after that you get a polite reminder you should get going... But this seems to be the practice here in Vancouver, so, it is what it is. Really worth visiting!
First time trying native canadian food and learnt that they re vancouver s only indigenous restaurant (which is both an empowering and sad fact). My palette has limited exposure to such fare so take this review as just one opinion. Also love the educational pamphlet on indigenous culture and lands. The fish n riss: 7/10. Was very interesting trying the wild rice and i wish there was more! The salmon was alil dry/overcooked. Main drawback of this dish def was the smaller portion size for the price. I really liked the bannock and was pleasantly surprised to see the jam and butter pairing (reminded me of a scone). My friend s elk sausage and mash was much better. 9/10. Meat is not too gamey and the mash/sauce had a nice zesty zing to it. But the sausage def is on the smaller side too. Servicr was great. Atmosphere is def cosy. On the smaller side and quite dark.
A cozy little spot with hearty, traditional food. The service was excellent and the servers engaging and the atmosphere was perfect for date night. I had this on my list to try and I was not disappointed. We had the Three Way Salmon to start, then Bison Pot Roast and Game Sausage Dinner, all of which were amazing. And the Bannock bread was a perfect side to mop up the gravy! Will definitely be back!
My GF and I went to this absolutely delicious restaurant which offers a great experience. Its not fancy but is cozy and the atmosphere was chill and friendly staff. The food was something beyond and yes, we are going to be back again to try more of their dishes
Excellent place in Vancouver to try Canadian indigenous cousine!, the bison, elk and salmon dishes are simply amazing, and the atmosphere and service was friendly and cozy!
Outstanding! Had been looking forward to visiting and it exceeded my expectations! Such a warm cozy atmosphere and the most attentive staff. The food was incredible. Every element on the plate so full of flavour. Well done to you all for what you have established here. Highly recommended!
The sandwich bread was as hard as my Nike Air Force ones
Our server was amazing! So funny and entertaining. Food was superb, what more could you want!?
Fantastic food, very happy to see indigenous representation here at the airport!
This was a recommendation from a waiter at another restaurant. It was amazing. Delicious food, amazing service. I will definitely come back next time Im in Vancouver.
This place is simply a gem in this city! In my opinion, it is a must because it allows you to eat good indigenous cuisine which is really worth the detour. The waiters/waitresses are very friendly, beautiful place, well decorated. Everything we ate was delicious. Bison soup, red salmon with wild rice and berry cheesecake. In terms of vegetables, I would have liked to find more local vegetables (like one of the three sisters perhaps?) Special discovery of cedar jelly, delicious!
Very nice little restaurant. Loved the food.
So freaking good. I gnawed on that bone good after the bone marrow was gone, and that gravy is truly drinkable. And Brigitte - such a great server. Shell love it if you call her if you have questions!
I took my boyfriend here for his birthday on July 8 as it was recommend to us by an acquaintance. Hes been really interested lately in trying game meat, which is very hard to find if youre not getting it yourself. We booked a reservation in advanced which was a good thing since it was quite busy on a Monday evening and its not a huge place. It seems to be a place very popular with tourists. The decor was really neat with lots of Indigenous art that also seemed to be available to buy so its cool that theyre also supporting local artists. Our table was actually a longer one divided in 2 by large clear glass. I thought it might bother me but I hardly noticed our neighbours at all and noise wasnt an issue. Our plan was to start with the bison marrow then he would get the bison pot roast and I was going to get the smoked sablefish. But since a busy weekend just passed, they didnt have everything on the menu available BUT they had a special item that day: elk steak. So we got the game sampler for the appetizer, I got the bison pot roast, and he got the elk steak. But first, for drinks he got the Sea-zer (caeser garnished with candied salmon) and I dont remember the name of the drink I got but was a mocktail with sprite, orange juice, and something else. It was topped with lovely soapberry foam mixed with some other berry to make it pink. Id heard of soapberries so I was pleasantly surprised to see it appear (theyre neat--look it up if you dont know about it!) We got the game sampler that came with bison salami, some other kind of bison cured meat (cant remember what it was called), dried bannock crackers, cedar jelly, and blueberry pemmican. The cedar jelly had a light, floral, bright taste and the pemmican had a nice whipped quality with a subtle rich flavour. The bison salami tasted like any normal salami (in a good way) and the other cured bison stuff was also very good and tasty. It was a softer texture than the salami, almost similar to prosciutto but not super salty. Back to the mains--by boyfriend was really excited to try the elk steak. He cannot eat beef and having steak is one of my favourite things to have for special occasions. It came with a tasty, smooth, rich gravy, buttery mash potatoes, carrots, and asparagus. The veggies tasted so good, I think they were roasted. He ordered it rare and it was cooked perfectly. He was nice enough to share a few bites with me and it was very very good, not gamey tasting at all. It tasted very similar to a beef steak so if youve never had elk before and if youre lucky to come in on a day where this is available, do try it! I got the bison pot roast, which was very good as well! The meat was so tender, and it came on top of the same buttery mashed potatoes, carrots, and asparagus. All mains come with bannock and it was perfect to dab into the sauce. The taste was also very similar to beef and was not gamey at all either. The plating was beautiful and overall the taste was also very homey like a good Sunday stew. It was topped with horseradish, which seemed freshly grated and was not harsh at all. The dessert options were very enticing, but we had a birthday cake waiting at home so opted out. Instead of after dinner mints, I loved that we got 2 small freezies since it was a hot 30+ day. But the temperature in the restaurant was very comfortable. The service was excellent. We interacted with all 3 servers that evening and they were all very good. Overall, it is a bit pricey but well worth it. Remember that these are very difficult ingredients to procure. This is also a busy place so keep in mind that some things may not be in stock if you are coming in earlier in the week. You could always call ahead too to see if what youre planning to have is available. I highly recommend trying out their game dishes especially if youve never tried it before. This is the only Indigenous restaurant in Vancouver so support it if you can! Itd be great if there were more of them. We want to come back for some fish dishes and bison marrow! (edited: added pic captions)
If youre looking for Indigenous food this is the place! A must visit once youre in Vancouver. From cold plates to Bison soup. Everything was good! Friendly and attentive staffs as well.
Dinner at Salmon n Bannock was a delight for the tastebuds. We had the slow cooked fall off the bone, tender, juicy Bison pot roast with delicious gravy & roasted veggies. And also had the buttery smooth smoked sage sablefish on polenta with roasted veggies. Both dishes came with bannock and we opted to get the cedar jelly which is aromatic & delicious. I even bought a jar of the cedar jelly to bring home.
This food isnt good.
Had the bison pot roast was best ever, also salmon sampler was delicious and salmon on wild rice was exquisite.. 5 stars for food, and service. Thank you
We embarked on an adventure with Pacific Northwest cuisine and what can I say, we havent regretted it. As a starter we had the elk soup, the main course was the bison steak and the dessert was also a dream. In a nutshell, it was a successful evening. We can only advise everyone to stop by and enjoy the ambience and traditional music. Keep it up.
Innovate and tasty cuisine, great atmosphere and so good to be served by people by who cared about their culture and the importance of seasonal and locally sourced food.
Don t miss this restaurant if you re visiting Vancouver. Everything was delicious, novel and interesting. Make reservations.
Spectacular restaurant to enjoy authentic Indigenous cuisine. We love the atmosphere and sourcing of local and Indigenous ingredients. A truly unique and grounding culinary experience
Great service! Amazing food. I recommend this restaurant to everyone. It s a must!
I usually don t take the time to write reviews but the food here was OUTSTANDING. 100% recommend. We got the elk sausage, salmon sampler, mushroom, risotto and bison and would order all of them again, seems like you can t go wrong with any dish
Amazing food and incredible service - couldn t ask for anything more! We were celebrating my wife s Canadian citizenship and wanted some authentic Canadian food. We had the bison pot roast which was delicious, the gravy was really flavourful and the meat melted in your mouth. Came with our young daughter and they couldn t do enough to accommodate us and keep her entertained. The food was a little bit delayed but they more than made up for it with the very kind and generous extras and service. We will certainly return!
Such amazing service and so kind and welcoming. Brigitte was wonderful and went above and beyond. Ada had wonderful recommendations and Isaiah was so full of information. Hands down one of the best meals I have ever had. My husband and I will be returning! Try their rotating menu, it is worth it!
We really enjoyed our evening at Salmon nBannock. Brigitte, Ada, and Isaiah were so welcoming! For our appetizers, we ordered the Signature Bannock with butter and jam, and from their rotating menu, the Elk Soup. Both were very comforting on a rainy evening. My wife ordered the Duck with mash and cherry reduction from the rotating menu. She enjoyed it so much! I tried a few bites and also thought it was great! I ordered the Fish n Rice Sockeye with wild rice and seasonal vegetables. It was delicious! I recommend making a reservation when you visit. Thank you for a wonderful night!
This place is amazing! The food is very delicious and filling. I am beyond happy to try local indigenous food. The staff are very friendly and great. I highly recommend this place.
Best meal I ve had in a really long time
Excellent place, incredible food, very kind people. 100/10
Elk burger was amazing, salmon equally delicious. Refreshing locally brewed honey lager was also excellent. Perfect flavours of home before going abroad.
Amazing Indigenous food.i had elk sausage with huckleberry. Delicious. Excellent service.
Went for my birthday, good service and great food. Wil definitely try to visit again sometime
The food was really good and something different that we had never had before, so we really had completely new taste experiences that we were able to experience. If we are in Vancouver again, we will definitely come back Vegetarian options: There are vegetarian dishes to choose from, but few. Dietary restrictions: Upon request. Parking: Unfortunately there are no parking spaces at the inn. Kid-friendliness: Probably not, there arent many child-friendly dishes. Wheelchair accessibility: Its all on one level, but the entrance is very narrow and the restaurant inside is also quite narrow, so I dont think its wheelchair accessible.
Most delicious food, including salmon with wild rice, game sausage, and mushrooms on toasted bannock. Servers were really friendly and helpful. Will definitely go back to try the other dishes.
This was truly an amazing all around experience with fantastic people providing delicious, thoughtful food in a supportive environment for first nations empowerment and cultural sharing. Recommended wholeheartedly!
Tried the Salmon, Bannock, and Bison Roast and all dishes were incredible. The service was also great - all the staff were very welcoming and gave great recommendations. Looking forward to dining again!
It is one of the few restaurants in Vancouver where you can eat quality food that is not international. It combines an extensive menu of permanent dishes with others of the day. Both times I went were very good experiences.
Didnt reserve a table, so sat outside. Cant really comment about the atmosphere, but the staff were very attentive and took their time to go over the menu and offer their recommendation. Ordered the urban sage smoked burger. I wasnt sure whether Id like a salmon for a burger, but it was surprisingly good. I only wish the portions were larger. Will def have to come again to sample some of the other items on the menu
Wonderful rotating menu with some stand-by s like bison pot roast and smoked fish. The game sausage and Haudenosaunee polenta are stars.
Great dinner, very interesting conversation about the history of the Indigenous people. Great experience.
Great service and food. Unique experience for anyone visiting Vancouver
Best fish ever! I loved the tower for 2
Small and nice restaurant with authentic indigenous food. We had the salmon sampler and the elk steak.
Delicious food! The service is excellent and friendly. I got the game sausage. The type of game is different every time. This time, it was venison blue berry. The art is very beautiful and adds to the atmosphere.
Never have I wanted to lick a bowl more at a restaurant.
This restaurant is a core memory for me from my Vancouver trip in 2022. I just recommended someone traveling up there to visit and encourage everyone to check this place out :)
Small, cozy shop. Good food, nice staff. Something different. Parking: Parking garages all around at usual Vancouver prices.
Excellent food. It really gives you something different than other restaurants. If you want to mix it up a little bit, and at the same time experience some real North American culture through your tastebuds - go here.
What a lovely little place! Food was absolutely delicious, staff were very friendly and accommodating, and they had some gorgeous art on the walls.
Everything we tried here was amazing
Very unique restaurant, I tried the tasting menu, the smoked sable fish is amazing ~ good selection of drinks.
Amazing food, amazing team - one of the highlights of my time in Vancouver after having not visited for afew years. Will definitely make a pit stop here when Im back in town next year or so! Great produce executed well, with great service - turning what was initial a cold dreary day into a lovely evening.
Wonderful food, great staff, and a cozy and fun environment. The bison pot roast was amazing - rich, warming, and generous on the beautiful gravy! The pemmican mousse was also a real treat - that on my bannock was a perfect dessert. Thank you to Chef and his team for feeding us well. Also a shout out to the lovely and fun front-of-house team. I honestly felt a little bit emotional - Indigenous food plus the Indigenous sense of welcome, and hosting us patrons as a group (I was one of the birthday victims!), it reminded me a bit of the potlatches up north where I am from.
The place is pretty small, I would recommend booking in advance. Food is of amazing quality, service is great and friendly. Inside is cozy and welcoming. Will definitely be back.
Absolutely delicious food and the hostess was incredibly kind to us and so accommodating of my partners dietary and health needs. Cant recommend enough! Dietary restrictions: Delicious gluten free bannock available
The food was absolutely amazing. The salmon soup was so good. My partner had the sablefish and he said it melted in his mouth. The service was incredible!!!! Our server was amazing, in fact the whole staff was amazing. Even the owner came and introduced herself. It was an amazing experience. I cant wait to go back!!
Just Wow! A unique and inspiring restaurant. Run, dont walk, to this eatery. Way better than expected. Parking: On the roof of toys r us next door. Very convenient
My best dining experience since Ive been here! The bison roast is fabulous, the staff takes great care of us, and the setting is very pretty. I cant wait to go back for risotto and dessert!
I had the elk steak (medium rare) on a bed of mashed potatoes with squash & cauliflower on the side (came with a cheese sauce in a small pitcher but did not add it). The elk was hands down the best steak I have ever eaten. Everything paired wonderfully with eachother as well as individually. Such an amazing meal, without question best I had on this entire trip. Cannot recommend highly enough.
The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the food. The food was delicious and presented really well. I would definitely go there again!
Totally experimental for us, but very successfull. Great food. Nice people.
Excellent evening at the Salmon nBannock restaurant. The dishes are delicious. We particularly appreciated the bison soup and elk meat as well as the kindness of all the staff.
A must-visit when youre in Vancouver! Make sure to reserve ahead. My partner & I went after a long day of walking in the sun and the bannock rejuvenated our bodies the way that only delicious and dense carbohydrates can. The Bison Pot Roast was a revelation. Perfect food & a great lesson in the true local history of the area!
This is such a special restaurant. The food is amazing, their role of celebrating and educating about indigenous culture is so important, and it s a really unique (and enjoyable!!) dining experience. I m devastated there aren t more places to get indigenous food, especially since this place has gotten me hooked
I was looking forward to eating here to learn about First Nations cuisine while visiting Vancouver. I can easily say this was the best restaurant we ate at on our trip. Our group tried some of each others dishes and found each to be fantastic. I hope I can return here again.
Lovely place to treat myself by eating some Salmon & bannock. Atmosphere was nice, food was delicious and the knowledge of land, food & history was superb. Was surprised the jam was from Quebec though lol
Great experience, definitely offer something different than every other restaurant in Vancouver, Bridgett was a lovely server as well
Amazing, delicious indigenous food and excellent hospitality. Do yourself a favour and experience this food in person for yourself.
Absolutely delicious!
So hearty and delicious. Sablefish was excellent.
Food was amazing, we had salmon sampler as starter followed by fish (salmon) and rice and smoked sablefish and the taste was really great, really recommended dishes. Not to mention the friendly and wonderful staff, the restaurant is quite small but well decorated with artist work.
When specialized restaurants that are far and few in a city have 5 stars in Google, I question if people are being nice because of the lack of options and tastings in that area. So I went in judging this place hard. How could they have simple dishes with game and fishes be worth the price they were asking. Well slap me silly, I walked away in awe and inspired. Its a small joint, so reserve and expect an intimate eating environment. This was my only issue if it was even one to consider. Food: I had a smtaste of everything. The Sable fish and corn palenta was so good I think I found my spirit animal, the Sablefish in a creamy sauce. Not sure what it was that made that dish brilliant, but it made me sit back and think about all the wrongs that colonizers did to the Indigenous and only if they ate this, maybe it would have been all different. 100% perfect dish worth every penny. Bison pot roast and mash, a classic flavor with a bit of game to it. Id say if youre from the south and feelin like a taste of home, heres a great dish that will fill you up. The asparagus was flavor packed too, never before have I had it cooked this way. Okay, for our appetizers, we had the game and salmon combo board thing. Sliced salami style elk and other game served with a cedar jelly that I could eat every day. I dont even like jellies! Venison patte with blueberries, crazy smooth and not harsh on the palette as many pattes. The salmon mousse was my favorite from the selections as I think every time Ive tried it anywhere else, I was left with a stanky fishy breath and unsatisfied. Yet, they crushed it! The salmon on rice was good, but I felt it was a little more dry than expected. I see what they were doing with it sitting on rice and asparagus, but it was my most I liked dish. The tacos for a vegetarian option were great as they were on fantastic bannock and packed full of various flavors. Salmon burger I did t try so I needed to take the work of my friend that it was awesome Overall: 9 out of 10 for food (which is higher than I give nearly any high end restaurant) Service was spectacular, she was on time and perfect. Music was environmentally satisfying. Lighting was dim and intimate, so I can focus on my dish. So when you pay for these meals, thinking, this better be worth it. Know that you are in good hands and each bite is a taste of professional chefs and culture. BRAVO SALMON n BANNOCK!
Every detail was amazing. Great service, and the food was amazing. The game sampler app was so good, and the simple beet salad was very complex with flavors and texture. Highly recommend
We absolutely loved this place and were so honored to have been allowed the opportunity to eat here. Its a beautiful place with beautiful people. We had a very busy Vancouver area (Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil-Waututh land) vacation and this place was so calm and relaxing- we were actually able to enjoy each others company and our food. The service was excellent and the food was delicious!! The gluten free bannock was awesome too. And we appreciated being able to learn more about indigenous and first nations cultures. Cant wait to go back! Vegetarian options: I had the vegetarian risotto which was really good and one of the appetizers I had the bison gravy on the side (had my family eat that). They were both delicious! Dietary restrictions: Gluten free options! I believe most if not all of the menu was also soy free. Some of the items were dairy free. They arent necessarily listed on the menu but its pretty obvious and also the servers are super knowledgeable. They did also have a gf beer and several great non alcoholic drink options. Wheelchair accessibility: The place is very small. Its possible there may be a spot in the outdoor seating for a wheelchair and they may be able to make a spot at one of the indoor tables, however, the entryway is small and definitely no wheelchair accessible washroom or washroom access. All parking is only parallel street parking as well. (Potentially a parking garage nearby though).
amazing food, service, and menu! I would highly recommend the salmon mouse. Can t wait to come back!
I walked by around 4pm and could smell the food from outside. After glancing at the menu, I immediately made a reservation for the next night. The staff are so friendly, helpful and accommodating! The food was the best I had all trip and I cannot recommend it enough
Exceptional experience. Traditional foods executed in a stunning & elevated nature. The owner is an inspiration with a warm heart. Cant wait to go back!
I was very impressed with the wait time. I guess I may have got lucky . Be sure to call in first!! The free parking we couldn t use because our truck is too big. Never the less the food was spectacular as was the service. The Salmon sampler platter was out of this world. Excellent Bison Stew. The infused drinks were amazing. I also tried the Salmon and Bannock Sandwich. Yummm! Original art work all throughout the restaurant. Don t be shy and come try something different. You won t be disappointed. Thank you Salmon and Bannock Wheelchair accessibility: On ground level so no need for elevator.
A wonderful, welcoming restaurant. The food was amazing. Wait staff were relaxed and also great at what they do.
We did our research and this place came up as indigenous Canadian experience which really piqued our interest. We made a reservation and glad we did because the restaurant is a popular boutique - meaning not many tables and big demand! The experience was more than we expected. Inez and her team took the time to explain the history and the meaning behind their people, culture, and food. This makes it so much more meaningful when we get to eat the incredible food. Thank you for the experience. We left full - belly and brain!
Loved the food! Soo good! Very authentic with a modern twist. Very delicious! Love their homemade bannock bread! Great customer service and super friendly!
I cant say enough good things. Went with a large group of 12. Everything down to the last detail was perfection. The owner was so lovely, funny and informative. The cocktails superb. The food was INCREDIBLE - I had blueberry salad, salmon and vegetable rice, and some kind of magic blueberry cake made with voodoo and ice cream. I ate so much I thought I was going to need a wheelbarrow to get me home. Seriously stop reading this review right now, get over there and start eating.
The food was delicious. I highly recommend the tasting menu option. I had the bison pot roast. The meat was so tender and delicious. My husband had the sable fish. It was flaky and buttery. We were also obsessed with the cedar jelly served on bannock.
First time here and the food was so delicious and the atmosphere so cozy. The staff were sooooo friendly and welcoming. Will need to return for a proper full meal.
The food was super awesome and very good hospitality and so friendly
It was a real treat to be able to dine here and experience a taste of indigenous cuisine during our time in Vancouver! Everything that we ordered was delicious, including the salmon, wild rice, game sausage, bison, gravy, bannock, and homemade sodas. (Id love to be able to go back in the middle of winter just to have the experience of warming up with a plate of hot bison pot roast with potatoes and gravy.) The staff are welcoming and clearly passionate about what they do- also happy to assist with recommendations. The dining room is small and intimate, so Id recommend reserving in advance so that you dont miss out.
One of the best dining experiences we had on our trip to Vancouver. The food told an amazing story of the region. Michelle did an excellent job.
They got game! It was a beautiful experience at Salmon n Bannock. The servers are very attentive but not overbearing. They seemed to be genuinely friendly people who enjoy their work place. The food is stellar. There aren t any vegan options and only a few vegetarian however, if one intends to come to an indigenous restaurant and not try the complete riches of the land they are truly missing out. The all the game meats were outstanding and was only surpassed with how filling they were. Among two grown men we shared a soup and a charcuterie board then had separate entrees. We were stuffed with no from for desert. This restaurant is a must for all Vancouverites and should be on the list for anyone wanting to try heightened Canadian indigenous cuisine.
Wonderful accommodating staff and amazing food! A really lovely dining experience!
Wonderful experience! Delicious food
Such an amazing experience and would recommend this place to anyone! The staff were so incredibly nice, personable, funny and helpful! My friend has a severe food allergy to nuts and they were so helpful in making sure to find answers/alternatives to make sure his experience was enjoyable (and safe), Ive never seen anyone in the restaurant business go this above and beyond. We were also lucky enough to have a small welcoming gossip session once the restaurant closed and it was SO MUCH FUN! The food was absolutely delicious and I basically licked the plate clean. If it wasnt for the fact that I was so incredibly full (and the kitchen was closed) Id have kept ordering more dishes so that I could try them. Such an amazing place and I cannot say enough to express how great they were. Keep up the great work and will definitely be back when Im visiting Vancouver!
Food is amazing, fresh, and the flavours are delicious. I love the tenderness of the bison and the flavours of the garlic mash and vegetables Vegetarian taco was amazing. Had a fresh flavour and the bannock was moist and fluffy. Shared amongst 2 ppl, we both walked out very full. Will be back to try more!
Amazing experience last night , very nice atmosphere, amazing food , excellent service.
Indigenous cuisine is a must try if youre visiting Vancouver, and to truly try it all, you need to get the tasting menu! Id highly recommend the bison roast, and grab as much bannock as possible. The staff is lovely, we got some great food and wine recommendations. However, the restaurant is a bit cramped, might not be the best spot for a large group.
Lovely, happy, genuine service. Great and filling food in a lovely little restaurant. They sang happy birthday to a patron which brought a lot of joy.
Food taste and presentation was good, but I find the bannock quite heavy. Sausage was ok, and the fishes are also ok. I find the variety on the menu quite limited. Its mostly bannock, salmon, and sausage heavy. I find the price too high for what it is and didnt quite meet up to my expectation. Food prep time can be improved as we had our main dish served close to or maybe an hour of wait. So id say 3/5 for this part. I liked the First Nation pieces of artwork and the concept, but I find the place uniquely dark and had some disco light inside. Service is friendly, and Im greatful that they still made a table for us after someone left as I made a mistake on my reservation day, thats hospitality 5/5. Otherwise, we would be sitting outside and it was cold as there are no heaters. Ambiance for me is 3/5 as lighting, placement of decorations, and chairs can be improved. Overall its 3-4/5*, worth a try when one wants to immerse into a First Nation dining experience and Id suggest just go for the Bison meat as it is quite rare to have when in the city. Go local!
The food is made with love and eating it can be emotional at times. The staff take care of you. This is a sacred space. This place deserves several Michelin stars. My heart is full and I am thankful.
I highly recommend to try this unique restaurant with even more unique flavours! The meals were fantastic, the staff were very welcoming and friendly. Food
Loved the bison and salmon with wild rice! The bannock went so well with the cedar jelly too. Service was top notch and even gave us books to read written by the restaurant owner.
Fantastic food, exceptional service. Will definitely go again, and every time I m in Vancouver. Vegetarian options: Veggie risotto
I enjoyed every aspect of this business. The staff, the food, the atmosphere was all 100%!!
Unfortunately no. I was looking for a good seafood restaurant. Because of the high score on Google I thought I would go there. Unfortunately, the food wasnt what I expected. I ordered risotto with salmon. Unfortunately I couldnt tell that it was risotto. And the salmon was very small, bland and a bit dry. Too bad! But the staff was very friendly!
Delicious food we were pleasantly surprised
Truly nothing like it. All Indigenous food and ingredients prepared to fine dining standards in a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. Wheelchair accessibility: On ground level, but a small dining room. Maybe require some chairs to be tucked in to get around, but should be doable.
Delicious, amazing, highly recommend. Recommend saving the bannock to soak up the sauce in the main course. I just couldn t resist eating mine while it was still warm! Dietary restrictions: All main dishes celiac friendly! And they have gf fresh bannock?! Will definitely be coming back!
Had the bison pot roast and pemmican mousse with bannock crackers this evening. Very tasty. Also tried the dreamcatcher sauv blanc. I enjoy coming here when I have visitors from out of town. The staff and owner are great. It s an intimate setting, but there is enough separation between the tables that you feel comfortable and private enough to visit with your party. Chloe was a very kind and personable server.
The love n of and for this place is evident , from the food to the decor!
We had dinner there on the weekend. It was a fantastic experience. The atmosphere was wonderful, the decorations truly unique and the staff was amazing. We shared the game sampler, the salmon sampler and the game sausage for starters. All were fantastic, but the sausage, salmon mousse, and candied salmon were truly amazing. We especially liked the fact that local berries were part of every dish. We had the bison pot roast and the smoked sablefish, and both were excellent. I was very happy to support a truly unique Indigenous business that was well worth the price. The only negative was that the wine list was very limited. I would have liked to see a bit more of a selection. We will definitely go back again, next time reserving farther ahead.
Great food. Very lovely service
Absolutely amazing! Definitely will be back :)
Great place to try out when in Vancouver. The experience is excellent and the food is fantastic. The Bella Coola soda is a must-order. It is deliciously fruity with an underlying herbal note. The soapberry foam on top further adds a sophisticated texture to the already distinctive drink. The salmon sampler is a delightful combination of flavours. The salmon mousse is light and fluffy, the candied salmon sweet, and salmon ceviche is very fresh with a satisfying dill flavour. However, each portion alone falls short of having truly complex flavour unless paired with the crunchy bannock chips - my favourite part of the dish. The bison pot roast is - contrary to my expectations - super tender and mellow. This is my first time trying out bison, and it is very good. The mashed potatoes are soft, fluffy, and pair excellently with the rich gravy. The roasted peppers and cauliflowers exist, but they are outshone by the bison to the point that I forgot I ate them. Portions appear small, yet I ended up so full that I skipped dessert. The owner is a super friendly lady with a ton of stories. Definitely not a cheap place, but one worth visiting.
Great atmosphere and food was delicious. I had the game sausage and loved it. Appetizers were fantastic as well
I came into this establishment with very high expectations and I m sad to say that they weren t matched. The entree and desert I had were entirely bland and tasteless. The entree was a bit of aragula with some very dry corn and beans. Unacceptable from a fine dining establishment to me. Same with desert: Dry apple crumble with very little apple and a scoop of cheap-tasting ice cream. The serving sizes were also very small, which isn t a problem for me but I expect the food I m served to be of high quality both as a product as well as in the way it s prepared and served. The wine was also not good and overpriced, as well as the homemade drinks, which I saw were just poured straight from storebought tetra paks. Again, I expect more from an upper class establishment. The only reason why I m giving this restaurant any stars was because the main course was good and the atmosphere is quite cozy. When I leave with a 200$ check I expect every single course to feel as if it was of quality and it really was no where near what I had expected. Lastly, it might be good to know that salmon n bannock regardless of its name actually barely serves fish, it only had three items on the menu and was out of two of them (and we had an early reservation too, so I don t understand that). That might be because it was dine out week but considering there wasn t an a la carte option, I felt mislead as I specifically came here for salmon. Sad to say I would neither come back nor recommend this establishment.
We enjoyed the food at Salmon n Bannock so much that we ate there twice in four days. Our favourites include the elk sausage, bison bone marrow and the bison pot roast. The rich, gamey, earthy flavours offered us a memorable culinary experience. The service staff were also impressive. Always friendly, approachable and ready to answer any questions. This restaurant is a must visit if you are in Vancouver.
We had a disappointing experience at the restaurant. The food took a long time to be served, and one of the servers did not make us feel welcome and we think she is not polite. It was our first time dining there, so we were unsure about what dishes to order. When we asked the server for recommendations, their response was, Thats why I am here. This is the exact wording of the server s reply. This made us feel uncomfortable. We also asked about a particular dish called game sausage, what kind of meat it is . But the server simply replied that it was a rotating flavour, sausage without specifying the type of meat. Furthermore, we were forced to leave the restaurant at 6:50 PM because the server mentioned that they had other customers coming. However, we didnt see any other group of guests waiting. Overall, our dining experience was unpleasant due to the delays, unfriendly attitude of one server, lack of helpful recommendations, and being rushed to leave the restaurant.
was really good would come back again
The food is delicious and the staff are amazing
Stunning food by an amazing team. Well worth flying 8,000 miles to try!
What a delightful find on West Broadway. Salmon n Bannock serves regular mains with a great regional aboriginal fusion. They incorporate locally sourced and fresh ingredients. I enjoyed my group meal, we shared tastes and enjoyed 2 appetizers and tasted each others 4 mains. You have to visit this Vancouver special restaurant. Parking: I found rooftop Toys r Us parking easiest to use
The airport employees at salmon and Bannock on the fly are sooo nice and helpful!!! <3
We had a lovely dinner at Salmon n Bannock. The space is cozy yet private and adorned with beautiful indigenous artwork. Staff is friendly and attentive. The food was cooked to perfection and the fresh quality ingredients really stand out. We started with the salmon sampler, for entrees we had the bison roast and game sausage dinner. The roast melted in your mouth. Both mains come with baked bannock. For dessert we had the strawberry cheesecake which was delicious, creamy and fresh. Would highly recommend Salmon n Bannock, we will definitely be back.
Ah, only one star. Sry friends. To preface, we did not have a reservation, and didnt realize it was Dineout. Note, the $60 dine-out option is the only option over the festival season. As well, The server/host apologized to us following the meals which I thought was very nice considering the slower service. The reason for 3 stars: we waited around an hour for our appetizers (shepherds pie) which were quite small. The following entree was another good while afterwards, an elk steak medallion and some roasted veggies. Also, not massive portions, but no big deal. Lastly, the dessert came out. It was decent icecream and bread pudding, but upon this service we were told that we had ten minutes left before the next reso. At this point we had been sitting for over two hours. Think I couldve eaten everything well before this point, but to be told this and having waited so long was a bit annoying. Unfortunately, I dont think i would do the dine out here again. That said, I understand the restaurant busniz is tough, and it was an early start for them. Perhaps there was more behind the scenes than we were aware of.
We came here without expectations and were blown away. The staff was incredibly warm. We ordered the mushroom starter, smoked sablefish, wild game sausage, and upside-down berry cake for dessert. Everything was outstanding, will come back!!
Do yourself a favor a go. The array of dishes is top notch. I loved the Fiss n Rice and the cake at the end was excellent as well. Be sure to get reservations as the restaurant was understandably packed by the time we left.
Love this place! Went back in February just to try it out and had booked a reservation for March before even leaving the restaurant. The bison pot roast is to die for and the candied salmon is fantastic (and I m not typically a fish person at all). Cozy atmosphere to hole up for a delicious meal on a date or with friends. Very friendly servers too and a good wine selection.
Absolutely awesome! A very welcoming space, friendly/happy staff with great people skills! The food was delicious, flavourful and exactly the right size portions! The owner ,Inez, was very approachable and took the time to chat! Highly recommend, whether you want a full meal, appetizers or dessert! (Reserve your table ahead of time to make sure you a spot.) Dietary restrictions: Gluten Free Bannock!
Took a little bit of time getting food out, but it was well worth the wait. Food was delicious, servers were very friendly and kind, & atmosphere was great, will definitely recommend and come again!
Great food, good staff but the restaurant could use a makeover
Came here for dine out, service started great with a land acknowledgement and then the first course came, both dishes were fine but bland. The bannock was amazing (gluten free bannock included) but the main dish came and both the elk and salmon were perfectly cooked but rather bland. Then I think they forgot about us because it took so long for them to clear our plates. Ice cream sundae, their gluten free dessert option, was the most flavourful thing I had all night. TLDR: Protein and veggies cooked to perfection but quite bland. Service was up and down. Dietary restrictions: Accommodated my celiac well.
This place has an absolutely amazing experience and atmosphere, great to support an Indigenous business and a friendly staff. However, I must say that for the price we paid, I expected the food to be truly amazing and it just wasn t that. All the dishes are conceptually well designed and the ingredients are clearly fresh, which I really like, but I felt that the wow! element wasn t there for most of the food, although the dessert was excellent. I would like to try this place again when it is not the dine out festival.
Excellent! Im definitely coming back to try other items on the menu, portions are filling, service was super kind, the art on the wall and the smell of sage create a great atmosphere. If I had to point any down side: my potato was extra crispy and hard but I still ate the whole thing lol. The wait time was a bit long, our appetizers took 40 minutes but once they were served, everything else was served on a timely manner.
Very cozy and food was delish. Service was great Food
Ive been wanting to come here for a while now and finally did for Dine out. The food was interesting and delicious, atmosphere was cozy and service was second to none. Big shout out to Malaia and Bridget. These ladies are wonderful and will make us come back for more of their hospitality.
We had an absolutely wonderful time stopping in for small bites and a drink. The staff were incredibly warm and welcoming and the food was to die for. An absolute must-visit!
Amazing food and really reasonably priced! Such a wonderful restaurant
Bison gravy is amazing. The bread has excellent texture and a very homemade feel. Cheesecake came in a smallish portion, but it was beyond delicious.
Excellent service, food and ambiance!
The food was great. Definitely recommend the charcuterie board.
The salmon on wild rice is to die for, and surprisingly the cauliflower included in the dish was another standout. Highly recommend the bannock with the jams--the cedar jelly has a wonderfully unique taste but is much lighter and more subtle than the berry jam. Both are delicious. We each got a dessert--the cake and the ice cream. I thought the berry flavor of the ice cream was stronger and more unique, but the cake was basically perfect too. Man oh man, this place is so good.
Had a nice date dinner here. Small place that can feel a bit cramped but the food and staff elevated our evening beyond expectations.
Thoughtful menu, everything from the appetizers to drinks are unique. All the food was cooked well, including the vegetables, very high quality
I m so glad I made a reservation here before my trip to Vancouver! Being from the UK, I admit I m not very well read in Canadian history, but I really wanted to support indigenous-owned businesses. Salmon n Bannock came up on the indigenous tourism BC site, as well as being recommended on other tourism sites, and safe to say I was not disappointed! Our hosts were very welcoming, especially as our reservation was very early and we were the only people in the restaurant but we learnt a great deal from the information sheets at our table about the indigenous history in BC. The restaurant was really accommodating and had delicious gluten-free alternatives, including the crackers for the salmon sampler and gluten-free bannock, which tasted incredible (Unlike normal gf bread) and was ideal for dipping into my main! The salmon sampler was really surprising - in the best way. I especially enjoyed the candied salmon as it was my first time eating salmon this way and it was prepared beautifully. The main dish with the game sausage was delicious and a very generous portion so prepare to take leftovers! Overall I really enjoyed eating here and can t wait to visit next time I m in Vancouver.
The elevator from the roof parking lot worked as of 29 December. Access the parking lot from the alley off Alder St. Its actually over the Toys Are Us. Go down the elevator or stair and go right. Its a small place so, reservations recommended. They called us when they had a cancellation so we were able to get in a little earlier, which we appreciated. They do very well with diet restrictions.
Had the bison pot roast. Good portion but pretty bland and mash potatoes werent that hot...definitely need to add salt. Meal came with bannock which was bland.. adding jam would have been extra. Probably just not my kinda food which happens from time to time.
Love this place! Took my partner here for his birthday, atmosphere was great, food was incredible, can t wait to come back!
Absolutely delightful dining experience. Will be bringing in all my friends from out of town to visit! Every part of the meal was exquisite, NYE mocktails were delish & the owner was so lovely to interact with. All the stars!!
We read many good reviews, and all is true. Excellent service, really delicious and unique dishes. But as for me, the main benefit of this place is that Mrs. Owner could create an atmosphere of holiday. We have a very pleasant surprise on our birthday. Thanks a lot for our positive emotions and great mood!
Omg everyone needs to go here! Their food was soooo good and the staff were super friendly. It s a super cute place and I seriously recommend it! (If the staff working there are reading this, you all were super sweet and I will definitely be back!)
Amazing staff and amazing food
Incredible experience, we came for Dine Out Vancouver 2024 and we could not have been more pleased. We left with our bellies full and had great interaction with the staff. Felt like going to an elevated and upscale dinner party at a friends. We had the Fish Stew, Bison Hunter Pie, Bone Marrow (20/10 so incredible), the Smoked Sockeye, Elk Medallion, and the Apple Cobbler desert. This is absolutely a place I want to share with others. Cannot wait to go back!
We had dinner here for the Dine Out Festival. The food was delicious and filling. The service was friendly. The restaurant was well decorated with a variety of artwork by Indigenous artists. We ordered the bison hunters pie and west coast wild fish stew for the appetizers, the elk medallion and smoked sockeye for the entrées, and we received the apple caramel cobbler for dessert. Our meal also came with bannock and butter, which was a plus. The server gave a land acknowledgement before the dinner, which is important and always good to see.
I enjoyed the food overall, the salmon burger was lackluster as far as seasoning/taste.
Excellent food - we had the bison pot roast, sable fish, venison sausages and mushrooms on bannock. Also tried some great wine from Apricus Cellars and beer from Locality Brewing. The service was great. It was very busy so took a little longer to get our food. Well worth the wait!
Restaurant was freezing cold and so was most of the very expensive food. One entree didnt arrive at all so they packed it to go and amazingly still charged for it. The ventilation system is so poor that all of our clothes ended up smelling like the kitchen. Extremely poor experience all around.
Service was great. However our mains took 45 mins and when they did come they were cold. Mashed potatoes were under seasoned and veg wad bland.
The atmosphere was so warm and welcoming. They were so accommodating and I really appreciated the history behind the land we were on and the history of the people.
Ate the Bison Open Faced sandwich at YVR today. Never had bison before and it was very good!
What an experience! The salmon platter is a MUST! The food is soooo delicious, lovely staff and great atmosphere. Definitely will be coming back!
Thanks for everything, it was perfect !
Wow, what an amazing dinner. The food was unique and amazing. Filled with subtle bursts of flavour. My fiancé became a Canadian Citizen. What better place to go? Nowhere else.
Very beautiful place, atmosphere and authentic cuisine, very original tastes. I recommend getting away from traditional restaurants. Vegetarian options: Fish and vegetarian dishes
Exquisite Bison and Elk main dishes. Lovely atmosphere and indigenous craft beers. Food
The best place we ve eaten on our trip to Vancouver, even after visiting a Michelin star restaurant.
I just had the BEST breakfast sandwich at the YVR airport location!!
The service was very slow and poor. They were fast just to bring the bill because they wanted to free the table for the next customers. The quality of the food is just ok and it s quite expensive. Not a nice experience
Long wait for my food which was really mediocre.I ordered the Elk.Very small portions. Wont be returning. Food
If youre looking for a unique and memorable dining experience in Vancouver, this is it! The restaurant is conveniently located on Broadway and has a wide variety of Indigenous dishes. Our pick of the night would have to be the Bison Pot Roast although our game sausage appetiser and the Fish n Rice were also very good! If youre looking to get the Bison Pot Roast I would recommend getting in early, it is very popular and they were sold out of it pretty quickly! The restaurant was super busy for a weeknight, due in part to the Healing Our Spirit Worldwide conference of Indigenous health care leaders and professionals taking place in Vancouver at the time and there were diners from all over the world (ourselves included!) coming to taste the food. Overall a really good experience and one I would definitely recommend.
We were curious to experience this west coast restaurant and it turned out to be a feast for the senses from the warm welcome, the smells of cedar, the sound of indigenous music, the decorative touches, to the flavours of the food and drink. The menu was proudly described to us which helped us make our selections and this enhanced our dining experience. We were invited to take our leftover bannock home. Extra points for reducing food waste. The service was wonderful. Reservations recommended as the restaurant has limited seating. Several groups of walk-ins were turned away while we were there. There s paid parking at the back but it s difficult to access the restaurant from the upper lot if you have mobility issues as the elevator is not in service. If you drive around to the lower lot there are stairs.
The servers were lovely. Unfortunately the food was quite tasteless. Had the smoked sablefish and fish and rice. Its not somewhere I would recommend for the best salmon sadly.
Took my friend for her 70th birthday the other night with another friend and my daughter. We all had the salmon sample and the bison. It was absolutely delicious. Have had it before and highly recommend. I am sure everything on the menu would be outstanding. The ambience and energy is so warm and welcoming. As are all the staff. They went over and above, making my friends birthday so special. Thank you.
This is an indigenous owned restaurant with traditional indigenous inspired food. It is Michelin listed. The service is wonderful they accommodated us just at closing time and theyre really friendly and share books about the tragic history of Canadian First Nations. Its poignant reading about the owners personal experience while reading through the menu. We ordered the upgrade to turn a main course into a 3 course meal. The first thing that hits you, literally in the gut, is how heavy the bannock is. Its so heavy and filling it could be a meal on its own. About the size of a large dinner roll with the weight of 7 of them. But it was surprisingly soft, natural tasting and great with butter. There was a beef and celery soup with so much shredded meat and celery it could have been a stew. Dipping bannock in it was great. We also had mushrooms and gravy on another large bannock. This was so good. The highlight was rubbed grilled salmon on wild rice. This was exceptional and we didnt finish it so we could share it with our daughter. Ice cream with berries was an excellent close. Let me not forget to mention 2 indigenous beers a vanilla porter that reminds you of a dark English beer and a Saskatoon berry that reminds you of a sour lager.
Had a great dinner with friends while we were visiting from Sydney. Amazing food and lovely staff! Will have to visit again
Great service. Mediocre food.
Exactly the experience I was hoping to have, the food was delicious, and the service was wonderful. I felt like I was visiting a friends house for dinner. Must try if youre anywhere near Vancouver.
Called said they had space, so we walked over for dinner. At the door do you have reservations ? No! Sorry we cant serve you....they could have told me that when I called 20min before...
Incredible food that is very moorish! Dont forget to check out their location in the YVR airport!
Right as I walked in, I knew it was gonna be great because the whole restairant smelled incredible. I got the rotating sausage meal which was venison. It was excellent!! The wine was also fantastic. I highly recommend this place. I will absolutely be back.
Simply amazing! Will be back for sure!
Such a amazing experience i had while sitting here on the secure side of YVR airport. Absolutely felt the love and passion that goes into this business. The bannock tasted like coming home to me and the salmon was incredibly moist and delicious. Will def be back and congratulations on your one year opening (the date just passed i know)
