Ive been going here with my daughter for years. Since the ownership change I havent noticed any significant changes other than the staff faces. Keep up the great work, thanks!

I love the staff, they are very cheerful to me.

Food quality has dropped since the beginning of the year. Staff has been replaced. The old vibe is missing. I have heard many negative comments. Sad that the business has changed so much.

Its not hard to give this business 5 s acoss the board. Just after covid shut downs I was a student and really needed a place where I could discuss subjects with my classmates and this is the only place that welcomed us with open arms and I will never forget it! Plus the coffee and desserts are to die for!

Recently visited with kids. Place is under new management. Very poor choices of baked goods. Offered pop and chips to young kids instead. Washroom dirty and smelly with garbage bucket overflowing... Windows, floors dirty ants crawling and eating crumbs under the tables. We had fun playing games with kids. But atmosphere is not the same anymore. Its April 10th. New owner keeps Christmas decorations on the counter... New barista girl didnt smile, looks overwhelmed. So sad that place lost its vibe... Please improve

Was super!! My boyfriend and I have had quite a few dates here (before and after ownership change) and we always have fun! Great way to pass the time, and an affordable outing! Food, especially the sweet treats, are always good, and my personal favourite, an iced chai, never disappoints. I m glad it s here in town

Hands down, the best scone in Vernon. Im diabetic so I havent tried their sweets, but they look and smell fantastic. They have great coffee and a wide selection of other beverages. The other half of their business is the boardgames. The staff is very knowledgeable and readily able to give recommendations if you are looking to buy. You can also play games in store for a small fee and they have a huge selection to try. Without a doubt, this is my favourite spot in the city.

A great spot close to the bus... I needed to kill some time for my next bus and had a fresh berry scone and a chi latte. There was a plugin for my phone free wifi and to top it off I had service with a smile:) thank you.

Very neat place, lots of games and some good treats. I like that they explain the game rules. I was dissapointed to learn afterward that you have to pay $6 a person to play a game, even when you order food! This should be something they let you know, maybe asking the customer if they have been there before and then giving them the run down.

This is a unique place in Vernon, and the location is great. They have a great variety of games, as well as games for sale. The owner is also really nice and I can tell that her and the employees are passionate about board games. I have found many a new favourite game because of suggestions from the lovely staff. The reason I left one star off is because I dont think they should charge you $6 to play games if you are buying food or a drink. I completely understand if someone is just coming in to play games and not purchasing anything else, they should pay for the table. But if someone is spending money on food, charging them to sit at a table on top of that makes no sense and is something no other coffee shop does. Even just a discount if someone buys food or drink would make sense to me. Like 50% off the table fee. I understand they need to make money, so it might not be in the budget to do this. But as a customer who usually comes weekly, this just discourages me from buying any food or drinks when I come play games. If Im spending $6 just for the table, Im going to bring a water bottle from home.

It is actually a board game cafe, what I didnt recognise until I entered. You pay $6 for a flat rate on playing games, and theres a big choice. The cakes are absolutely outstanding, too. I totally recommend a visit, even if youre only passing Vernon.

This place is a unique & wonderful spot to hang out. Wonderful coffees & delicious treats. Marilyn & her team are outstanding hosts. The only trouble is beating others out for the comfy sofa.

Starbucks and McDonalds only have bad coffee, so I went here in search of delicious coffee. When I asked for a hot cup of coffee with a strong flavor, the coffee was exactly as I expected. It was delicious.

It used to be a great place thats why its getting two stars but ever since the new owner got it its fallen when you get a milkshake you get warm colored milk that only fills half the cup and the new owner has a very bad habit of standing right behind you while you are sitting at a table using your phone. A little sad about the ownership change, but nonetheless a nice little place. I m bummed that they don t have their hot apple cider anymore. I tried the pumpkin chai and it was ok. New owner or employee was not the friendliest. All around it s an ok place, just won t be the same.

I love this little place! Great for a quick stop for lunch with the kiddos, or even by yourself or with friends. They have a menu that covers something everyone could want, and even made my picky eaters happy! (They had a sausage roll and a grilled cheese) I personally recommend the Panini They have a huge selection of games to choose from, you can stay and play- they even offer popcorn, chips, or a candy bowl for a small price. The food is yummy and made with care, the coffee is great, and the overall feel and atmosphere is wonderful. What started as a quick stop, is turning into a weekly outing with the fam.

So much fun! There were some games my kids had tried to school that they wanted us to buy so we went here to play them and we ended up having so much fun. We were there for 2 and 1/2 hours playing different games and we didnt even notice the time go by cookies and tea and coffee soda. And you can buy some of the games there. Its a $6 per person to play whatever games you want but it is so worth it. We spent less than $40 and had two and a half hours of absolute joy and now brand new game to take home

My wife and I LOVE this place. The owner and staff are as personable as family. Tons of awesome games to play and of course you can purchase the ones you like the most. Always busy and the nice selection of drinks and snack food is home-made and delicious. If you are a gamer looking for a unique and fun night out, look no further. Extremely affordable and every game and game piece is well cleaned to keep everyone COVID safe.

This is the second time this has happened. As a Vernon downtown citizen who uses the bus alot to move around, its often the only place warm and in view of the bus. Especially during these cold winters and sometimes you just might need to give your phone a little charge while waiting for your bus. Now one would assume that if someone sees someone regularly, who purchases many many things from their establishment and even engaged in nice conversations with the owner, you might think you might want to keep your place a comforting place for repeat business by not demanding someone leaves if they do not IMMEDIATELY purchase something or pay the table fee. Especially in a place like Vernon where word of mouth is essential. Its a trend in business I despise and I will not be returning to The Boarding House. Want a better atmosphere? Go to Triumph coffee, or head over to Bean Scene. If you need to get board games, get them at Ebbenezars.

We were very excited we came across this place as were avid board gamers from out of town. The woman who took our order was pretty unfriendly and told us that if we wanted to stay and play it was $6 per person but left us with the impression that if we brought our own game there was no charge. We opted to not play as we werent staying long. We ordered coffee and food. My sisters grilled cheese sandwich took half an hour to come out. As we had to wait so long I ran to our car to get our game What do you meme which is an easy fast playing game and I just wanted to show my sister. We played for about a half hour and we were going to purchase a $90 game on our way out. It was then that were were informed by the same unfriendly woman that we would have to pay $6 PER PERSON because we played our OWN GAME for a half hour. We paid, but left the game we were going to purchase. I hope the $18 was worth a one star review. Its a shame, this place could be great with better staff.

Our D&D group comes here for our campaigns, and we have never had a bad experience. The treats are delicious, the drinks are to die for, and the staff are so kind and helpful. We are so thankful to have a place like this locally! Our dice may abuse us with terrible rolls and crit fails, but we always feel like weve rolled a nat 20 when we come here.

You just lost two customers that were planning to spend a lot of time and money here. We spent 2 hours one evening playing games, had some cake and drinks. Awesome time! Next day the lady snaps at the wife, refusing her access to the bathroom (she waited patiently and asked nicely) because she wasnt a customer . We were planning to come back often, bring friends etc. but you just blew it. Well done.

Hands down the best place in town to visit if you are looking for something fun to do with friends, a place for delicious fresh baked goods and treats or specialty coffees and warm drinks. We have been coming by The Boarding House for about a year now and cannot say enough how amazing the staff and Marilyn are. They are by far the highlight of our week and make the day better. Some of the best baked good Ive ever had, Marilyn also does full cakes and treats to order if you are looking for something amazing for a party or event. Or just for yourself if you are extra hungry. Selection of board games to try out is phenomenal and well maintained and all covid safe. And the selection of games to buy is honestly better than many of the board game specific stores in town. All around, a perfect place to stop by and get away for a few hours. Cant say thank you enough to Marilyn and all of her staff for the amazing time we have gotten to spend there and the amazing treats she constantly has on display for everyone. 10/10 you have to stop by and check it out!

I guess I can give this place 1 star rating as the food was tasty. But the owner was extremely rude to her staff in front of customers several times. One person in front of me and a 10 min wait to order and then a 30 min wait to get the greek salad and cinnamon bun to go. Very noisy inside with the machines (blender and mixing coffees). The vibes are very toxic in this place. And to the owner, when you no longer have something available on your menu as sold out thats what an eraser is for and chalk to rewrite it on the board. NOT for making your employees feel incompetent.

We stumbled across this gem and nearly 2 hours flew by! The treats are delicious and made by the owner! Rave reviews for the chocolate raspberry scone. The drinks were varied with some unique selections - try the blueberry lavender milkshake. The snack options are just right (popcorn for the snack-y, grilled cheese for the slightly hungry). The game selection is huge! If you cant find something to play it is because you dont want to play (which is an option) or you are overwhelmed by choice. The cost is reasonable. $5/person to play (July 2021). Most other game cafes charge by the hour which makes the experience rushed. Our regret was getting there so late! I understand that eventually the cafe may be open later and I imagine a more adult group than ours might be interested in that option. For us, 9 pm got my youngish crew in bed at a reasonable hour! We walked so I cant comment on parking. We are visitors but, we will be back!

We just got gelato after dinner and we noticed the board game cafe and got super interested (being the board game lovers we are). And we were just hanging outside looking through the window and the owner was so lovely and invited us in despite outside food . It was such a nice place here and staff was so friendly. The owner was so welcoming and spent time talking to us and recommending games to our friends. She was such a super lovely lady, and we can definitely feel the love she has for board games. My friends ended up getting two new board games and were super happy about it! Definitely love to support this cute place. If we are ever visiting Vernon again, we would come back here for sure.

Fantastic place for any and all. Game lovers of all ages are congregating. Super laid back friendly service. So many games to chose from. Games are well organized by style (strategy, cooperation, ... ) so you can easily find something new and random that your group is interested in. There are also a good amount of solo games available, so dont feel you need company.

I stopped in to grab a drink and get out of the smoke for a bit. The customer service is top notch. Looking forward to going and doing a game evening with my family.

This place is one of the few places open late in Vernon. Really nice pleasant place to hang out, drink some good coffee, and play some games with your family or friends. We tried Risk and Sushi Go for the first time and loved both games. Simple cafe food. Nice atmosphere. Excellent owner and staff. Will definitely return to this very relaxing fun place.

Its an unique type of place, where fun and families can unplug, and once again discover each other over literally hundreds of board-games to test, play, and even buy if the fun doesnt want to stop. Everything from the classics like Monopoly, Catan, and Ticket to ride, to Code names, Wingspan, Pandemic, Planet and too many more to even list. Making this virtually impossible not to find a game for every type of person and skill level. All with the help of the local game curator Dan, who is fantastic with teaching people on how to play the game for the novice to casual players. So no matter the person, this still creates countless hours of natural imagination just waiting to be experienced and explored. Yet this is also a place to just sit and relax alone, or talking with friends, in a modern, yet home-style cozy atmosphere. All while indulging in one of Marilyns baking delights, like an amazingly rich chocolate cake, or various other fresh muffins, cookies and treats. Or trying one her tasty paninis and/or grilled cheese sandwiches, with a freshly brewed coffee. Or savoring the more creative espresso drinks and lattes made to order. And now you can explore all this for yourself.

We cannot praise you enough , Marilyn! We all want to thank you for coming to our rescue during this time, and agreeing to supply, not only the food, but an absolutely ,beautifully decorated and Deviously delicious cake, for our small backyard wedding. The salads were some of the best salads I have ever tasted! The Jamaican Rum cake was such a hit! The comment of one of the Jamaican guests, says it all... It is the first thing in three years , that truly reminds me of home! Everything was simply perfect!

She has some amazing treats! Bacon cheddar scones are amazing. Today she had a maple walnut, and its delicious! Her iced coffee is made with Coffee iced cubes, which is fricken awesome. Doesnt get watered down. Definitely check them out, if not for board games, then the great freshmade treats.

For $5 you can play as many board games as your heart desires, either alone or with friends! In stock is a wide variety of games for you to play! Not to mention the owner does her own baking, and has made some astonishing and delicious foods. Like what you see? They also have board games you can purchase and take home! Closing remarks: The Boarding House Cafe is a locally owned business with the main goal of bringing people closer together. Bring your friends, bring your family, I guarantee youll have a good time!

Wonderful service and excellent food and a nice place where you can play board games

This place is absolutely amazing! My husband and I were there about 2 weeks ago and loved the atmosphere. The charcuterie board is fabulous! The owner also has homemade cheesecake which is probably the best I ve ever had. An amazing family owned little place with coffee that hits the spot. Support local, and especially this family as their customer service is amazing! And they provide a warm, homey, welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended

Vernons first boardgame cafe and by far my favorite place to hang out. Even without the boardgame aspect, they have a great food and drink selection. Cakes are baked fresh in store everyday, and the owner is one of the most wonderful humans ever. Its a great spot for big group games such as dnd. Hopefully I get a chance to visit soon!

I wish I could rate this cafe higher than five stars because my wife and I have had the best time hanging out here. Were wrapping up a vacation in Vernon and one of our friends recommended the place. Marilyn is knowledgable, friendly, funny, an amazing chef and barista, and really helps to make your experience as good as possible. The prices are fantastic and there is a huge selection of playable and purchasable games - all easily sorted and displayed. They have also been following all covid 19 protocols and we have felt extremely safe and welcome. Seriously, there is something for everyone. Marilyn is absolutely passionate about her store and full of joy everytime I have come in. Her food is amazing, and she has a great selection of boardgames from checkers to advanced strategy. If you have always wanted to try a new game, spend time with the family, or challenge your partner, this is the place to be! Its open a bit later than most cafes in vernon, and has a very laid atmosphere. Also a great place to run your DND gatherings Id thats your thing!

Have a group of friends and not sure what to do? This is the place. Came here for a visit while in Vernon. Will come here again as it is a place built on passion, and it shows. All goods baked in house by the lovely lady who owns it and her baker for quality home made style baked goods and sandwiches. There are IMMENSE amounts of boardgames to play while in the cafe as well as a section for purchasing table top games. Its open space provides lots of breathing room to enjoy coffee even in large groups. Will reccomend to any local or traveler. Its worth checking out.

The staff are friendly. Tons of games to play. Deserts are really decadent. Shakes are made the way you like them.
