Funky spot for creative brunch & dinner eats with coffee, craft beer & cocktails plus vinyl tunes.
This establishment is a well-known spot for breakfast and lunch. Due to its popularity, it often experiences high foot traffic, so it's advisable to plan your visit accordingly. Guests can expect prompt and friendly service, and the venue is maintained in a clean and well-lit atmosphere. Additionally, the portion sizes are generous, and the food is noted for its good taste.
Great atmosphere, fantastic coffee and delicious food! Would definitely recommend the eggs Benny or chicken and waffles!
It was a small space so it got pretty loud, but it wasn't unbearable, the food was VERY good, I got the brisket hash, needed a bit more seasoning but that's what salts for I guess haha, the service was wonderful, all staff very friendly and inviting
Good breakfast place with a lot of slections on the menu. Would recommend comming earily or calling ahead as can get quite busy. Also they have home made sauces and jams that can be purchased to take home as well.
I ordered Brisket and Eggs. I give this meal 10/10. The brisket was excellent, not to dry or juicy. The eggs and harsh brown were delicious. I also loved the onions. The restaurant is cozy and the vibe is good. I had approximately a 15 minute wait at noon.
A restaurant located in the best Western. The restaurant doesn't have separate restrooms ( had to use the hotel lobby one). Came around 945am on a weekend and had a 10 minute wait. The brisket was a bit dry. That dish was 3/5. The scrambled egg was good( not too rubbery). I don't eat poach eggs and they were able to scramble it for me. The shaken espresso oat milk tasted like the starbucks one 4/5. The service was ok, had to find them for the bill , and was a wait to order food. My partner like his food. They ask about your desired temperature for the poach eggs
Absolutely loved this place. We wanted to go to a local brekkie place while visiting Victoria. This place is a gem. It was very busy in the morning but got in right away. The food was fantastic , I had a simple egg and toast breakfast and the wife had the bagel with the salmon slices which was delicious. The service was fast considering it was so busy. Will be going back again when we are in town.
Great place if you are looking for a hearty and filling breakfast. Very reasonable and big portions. My favorite dish is the brisket hash and I've had it twice over my stay and it never fails! Both my fiance and I love it here to the point that we have to take our breakfast to go.
Top tier breakfast. Great service great food. Try the hot sauce!
Delicious food and very incredible menu selections
Breakfast tacos are fire! Dietary restrictions: Gf options Food : 5/5 |
Excellent food. Fantastic friendly servers, amazing atmosphere
Food is great. Rubys is a fantastic destination for breakfast, but they have a nice unique twist to a lot of the traditional breakfast foods. The staff are wonderful. I dont necessarily know what theyre going for with the theme or decor of the restaurant, but it doesnt detract from the experience as a whole. They get bonus points for the music being played off of a real record player.
Very great experience, their green hot sauce is delicious and it actually has a kick in it. Their hash brown has my heart
Good selection breakfasts. The brisket hash was excellent.
The food is good but mice just going around the restaurant I don t really recommend it.
Great Breakfast! Was in on Tuesday morning at opening. I just wanted to shout out the server. So professional and so calm.
Consistently good brunch fair. Have never been disappointed
Had a great experience. Food and portion was excellent. Recommend you go if in the area.
OMG where to begin... went for Brunch with an old friend today... and I have to say...THE BEST BREAKFAST/BRUNCH EXPERIENCE I have ever had the pleasure of eating... the Service was Fast & Friendly... and the food to die for... I couldnt make up my mind, so the Waitress suggested I get 1/2 orders... of the Benny & Waffles...so happy to be able to order half orders... I wanted to lick the plate clean... cant wait to come back.
Heard great things about the Ruby but it was just an average Benny, won t be back.
Had really high expectations of this place. Me and my partner went in this Sunday, was a lineup as expected. Waited for 10 minutes before being served by the front host. He mentioned there was going to be 20-25 minutes wait and to come back and the table would be ready. We came back after 25 minutes, only to be told that it was Expected time and he was trying to do His Best , where-in other customers who came after us, had their table. No issues with that, it was the tone and gesture of the server, was very rude and he made us feel that we were not welcome in the establishment. This was the first time in Victoria, that I was made to feel discriminated by this person. We were patient, we came back after the time that we had been given and yet such rudeness, with a tone and hand gesture, and being told to ***get out of the restaurant!! ***was just very disappointing and honestly hostile. I wouldn t know how the food tastes, or comment on anything else- but let s us believe that the people, servers and management are not welcoming and discriminatory, which is very sad and surprising in this day and age!! Won t be going back or recommending anyone, this joint after such experience.
My wife and I s first visit together in Remembrance Day ( very busy). She is celiac. From the first connection with the front of house to our server, wait times good quality all was perfect! Friendly people, efficient service, delicious food! Way to go Team Ruby!
The food was pretty mediocre, I just feel as though there are much better places right near by
Huge portions. Good solid breakfast.
Noting that the service is better than the one on Douglas, which Ive also been to reluctantly a couple of times and at which I have also not enjoyed the food. Its not inedible, its just not tasty or memorable. Its a bunch of insipid ingredients thrown together without a lot of care or intention. No one at the table enjoyed the meal, no one hated it. Its expensive, loud, and mediocre.
5 stars just isnt enough
I got the rotisserie chicken & waffles & it was nice to have the option for rotisserie chicken instead of fried! My boyfriend got the eggs Benedict and says it was the best hes ever had.
Food is awesome!
Quite possibly the worst breakfast I ve had in my entire existence eggs weren t cooked chicken wasn t cooked it was bright pink inside hashbrowns were bland I don t know if they even season there food.
Vegetarian options: Falafel was great Food
100% recommended...without a doubt if we return to Victoria we will stop by The Ruby...one of our best breakfasts on our vacation in Canada.
Absolutely delicious food, we loved it so much, the staff is also really nice! Will come back next time were in Victoria!
Too loud couldn t hear the people I was there with.
$4.50 for a little cup of rough coffee to go lol...wow guys..
The brisket benny was fantastic all 4 of us got it.
Money first, people second. Thats how Im feeling. I was coming about once a month with my friend. Both of us are disabled and we take longer than most - but we order breakfast and dessert and, between the two of us, usually spend $80 to $100. Twice we have been pushed or asked to leave so the table can go to someone else while we are still finishing our meal. Yes, we are slow eaters, and I understand a restaurant wants to flip a table for money and short wait times. But I feel unwelcome and judged negatively for being different. Its amazing food. And the service is usually lovely. But I will try to talk my friend into not returning - which I image will only make this restaurant happy
Great staff, The food is great and portion sizes are decent, lots of options definitely worth checking if out. Dietary restrictions: They substituted bacon with falafel in the salad which was excellent
Real food, real music what a great cafe with amazing food. Fam was in town for the Victoria Marathon and we stopped here for breakfast. All of us had great tasting food, huge portions, and great service. A must visit for breakfast and cool fact, real turntable with albums playing..we had Queen and the Hip nice! We were Fully..Completly.
The good: Cute spot, liked the decor and music The brisket benedict was tasty. The bad: acai bowl wasnt very good or fresh My drip coffee was never refilled. They didnt take American Express, despite being a hotel-attached restaurant in a tourist area.
Brisket Bennie was excellent.
Great waffles!
Very good club sandwich! Fried chicken was also delicious! Unfortunately, chocolate milk wasnt that tasty - it had a very strange aftertaste. Service was nice and attentive. Clear recommendation for breakfast/lunch.
Fried Chicken and Waffles. Breakfast Poutine. Brisket and Eggs. That is all that needs to be said.
loved my brunch here on labour day weekend! the chicken and waffles was supreme. the chicken was cooked to absolute perfection. not dry at all. it was stunning! four stars only because they have had pretty bad coffee every time i ve been here. other than that - great spot!
Such a great menu, full of options from a classic breakfast to fried chicken eggs benny (personal favourite is the Healthy Hash). Typically a wait time, but the line moves pretty fast. Service can be slow during peak times but the food has always been great.
I ordered beef brisket hash, the taste was ok but it s really DRY!!! You can see in my picture there only little bit of bbq sauce on brisket, it s really dry my boyfriend ordered brisket & egg waffles, his comment is underwhelming . Our drink is really good though, we ordered strawberry fields and brunch punch.
Best waffles I have ever had . Its like the flavor of a freshly cooked waffle cone but crispy and yet fluffy. Brisket was spot on so tender. There breakfast poutine is now my guilty pleasure... With no guilt. They have a homemade warm sauce that is smoky and sweet perfect for eggs. home made strawberry jam yes please. Service was amazing like your best friend made you breakfast the morning after a great night out. The spinning records just added to the vibe. Hell they even hand fold there napkins. Its a vibe and my new favorite breakfast place.
the food was good the service was great the only pitfall to this restaurant is the location - it s actually in a hotel which just kind of ruins the vibe. You have to leave the restaurant and go into the hotel lobby to go to the washroom. Kinda weird. Other than that would recommend.
PERF!
Food is unreal! Their hot sauces are super flavorful and not too hot, perfect to add to any dish! Parking: We parked on the street this time in a 2 hour max paid parking spot. We had enough time but it cost us $6 to park.
Simply the best! Brunch is my jam and this (with Blue Fox being a close tie) is the best in town.
It s really cute in there. They play real records on a player and the food is 12/10. Super yummy chicken and waffles!
Disappointing experience. Having to wait in a busy weekend is understandable, but the lack of communication and disrespect can only bring frustration and leave one unsatisfied.
Great food, great service. All around great experience.
Excellent service and family atmosphere. I loved the presentation of my Sunday brunch plate. The flavors were there and the coffee exquisite. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great food and service in a friendly, casual environment.
Can t say I would eat here again.
Everything delicious, excellent service and everyone friendly, one of the best places to have breakfast that we were lucky enough to find
Food is decent. Service is okay. You definitely wont walk away unhappy but may second-guess another attempt at eating here. Its super crowded for breakfast/brunch on the weekends, and the crowds outside the door build up the hype even more. Its crowded partly because its right next door to a hotel. Yet when we came, we noticed there were a couple of empty tables but we were told to come back in 45 minutes because of a line of people waiting ahead of us and something about the kitchen staff trying to keep up with the crowd. So we left and came back in 45 minutes ... only to have to wait over 30 minutes more for a table. It was annoying to say the least, and while the food is decent as I mentioned before it wasnt worth waiting nearly 2 hours for. So, moral of the story: If theres a crowd when you get there, rest assured you wont be missing out if you skip this place as good options for food are plentiful in Victoria and you can save all the time you would have waited here doing something way more fun.
Had 2 breakfast s here and both were great. Very large portions. Conveniently located inside the hotel I was staying at and open before eight.
Superb. I ordered the salmon benny, and my husband ordered the breakfast tacos. Super tasty and top quality.
Food so fresh and delicious
Had an amazing breakfast and the coffee was great too! We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and had wonderful service!
I thought it s just normal brunch cafe, but they have so many choices of menus such as mexican taco!!!!
Week-long trip between Victoria and Vancouver and ate well at many places, but the seemingly simple beef brisket and waffles from this place stood out as the best meal I ate. Fluffy waffles made to perfection and the brisket was some of the best Ive ever had. Decent coffee, great atmosphere and service. Well worth the visit.
Hands down one of the best brunch places in the city!!!!
Great housemade sausage, funky vibe and friendly service.
Group of six. Short wait but comfy lounging area in hotel foyer. Excellent menu with lots of breakfast options. Nobody was disappointed. In-house sausage was delicious! Friendly, courteous, and efficient service. Generous portions. Great experience
Good food! Wouldn t recommend the gluten free hash, they only cook the outside of it in a big log and the inside is all mush. No flavour. Eggs are good, your typical and the house made sausage is bomb! The Mexi Benny was great! Both our dishes were great, would get the croissant over bagel next time based on preference. Server was in training and she was amazing! Thanks The Ruby!
The sandwich and salads were really good but their fries are mushy. May go back for the sandwich and salads but will never order fries again, thus the 3 stars.
You know when there is a line to get in that the experience must be great. Well that was true for here also. Amazing options and even though it was crazy busy service was excellent. Recommend waiting, it s worth it!
The portion is so big I can t finish one portion by myself and it s so delicious! The waiters are super nice and patient with children. But I don t like coffee. It has a sour taste, but overall it s good. It s worth a try!
This is an excellent place to have breakfast or brunch. We were staying in downtown Victoria and required a convenient restaurant for breakfast The food was/is flavourful, and the service was friendly. The atmosphere is that of a family restaurant. Its a lively, busy restaurant. I will return to this restaurant when I return to Victoria. Kid-friendliness: Very child friendly. The staff and servers are good with kids.
Fun and inviting breakfast spot. Their bennys were really good and they had a nice selection of drinks to choose from. The wall paper was also really fun.
Excellent brunch! Very abundant portions, varied menu, good service, the place is spacious and clean! The day I visited it was very cold and inside everyone treated us very well and gives us a table next to the fireplace. Food
Had breakfast here on an overnight stay in Victoria. The atmosphere here is really cosy and quaint and we found all of the staff very friendly and helpful. The menu is really large and it can be hard to choose! We were there over breakfast time and enjoyed an omelet and smoked salmon Eggs Benedict. Absolutely get your eggs Benedict on a local bagel! Coffee was strong, hot and delicious. We would definitely return when visiting the city.
Tremendous. Absolutely tremendous.
Very busy on weekends, so be ready to line up (if you dont have a reservation), wait a little bit longer than usual for your food and eat in a loud environment. Foods good, I enjoyed a lot their brisket meat.
The cuisine and service at Ruby on Johnson are excellent. enjoyed spending time with pals... We relished every meal we ordered from this place.
Interesting menu items well done, all around
Alex is the best! Wheelchair accessibility: It is wheelchair accessible! FYI, I always ask for table 25, or the other ones wth the table legs that arent in the way of my manual chair. They only have a few tables without the cross legs. They are always very accommodating and nice!
Best breakfast omelette I ve had in a million years. Eggs cooked to perfection. Tasty bacon and cheddar. Homemade sourdough bread and tasty butter. If the blood orange mimosa is available as a daily special, get one! Tables big enough for hungry big boys too.
Great food. The staff is very accommodating to modifications. Food
I ordered the Featured breakfast with French toast. The fruit compote was good, not to sweet but great flavor. Side of bacon was good and the Mocha was also pretty good. I liked the music they were choosing to play. It seems the place is popular so be prepared to wait during those peak times. But, its worth it. All the staff was pretty friendly.
Great breakfast menu, always a lovely spot
When youre a brown man with brown parents standing between white people. The person at front desk, attending customers it happen nearly 29-30 January, but they ignore you and keep asking white people who were standing in front and behind us in line, and ignoring us. This happened 2-3 times and I felt racism for the first time in Canada at this restaurant. You could see in his eyes that he was not happy to see brown peoplein this restaurant. But it happened with my friends too the next day.
I feel unwell after eating their food..I am sorry to say that, but their food is the worst thing I have ever eaten in my entire life.. we ordered Canadian Benny, the sauce is too heavy and way too sour , you could not taste anything else, it was horrible. But that s was just beginning, we had açaí bowls after which literally made me throw up it was warm, super sour , stomatizing .My boyfriend tasted it and immediately lose his appetite I have waited 20 min then truly suffered 20 min trying to finish my food I feel sorry,I have never leave any leftovers on my table and I am always enjoying having food. I am glad to know there are still something I can not take up I wish I could forget it now..
I went with some friends for brunch. Even though the wait was long, it was completely worth it. The food is delicious and the service is very good. the portions are very large. this is one of my favorite places now for brunch :)
Went for brunch and was welcomed warmly by both host and server. My friend had the chicken and waffles and I had the chocolate waffle. Both were delicious and very filling. I appreciated the suggestion to add bacon to the waffle too from the waiter. Cappuccino was beautifully made and delicious!
We were on vacation to Victoria this week and stayed at the Best Western Carlton and enjoyed our first meal at the Ruby on Johnson. On our 3rd visit, at breakfast, our waitress kept refilling our coffee, even tho it wasnt asked for. The end result was that we were charged an extra $17 for 4 coffee on our bill. That meant that a nice $43 breakfast quickly became over $65 with a generous tip. I never thought to examine the bill until after as i assumed your staff would not pad the bill. It would be good to advise good customers of your refill policy rather than gouge them at every opportunity. I hope this is not the reputation tou are trying to convey. Sad sad service.
Stopped here for brunch on our family trip, and am I so glad we randomly chose this place. It was busy, but the wait wasnt too long. The service was really great. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. And the food. Some of the best brunch Ive had. I ordered the Elvis waffles, and every bite was just to die for. My daughter ordered the house made sausage Benny, and I can almost say it was better than my waffles. I had a mimosa that was on special, and it was truly one of the best mimosas Ive ever had. I cant wait to come back to Victoria just to come back here and eat again!
Best brunch in Victoria for sure! Staff is always friendly too!
I had the açaí bowl, the yogurt was warm and it made me very unwell
DISRESPECTFUL AND OUTRAGEOUS. .. On a Wednesday noon, waited 40 mins for a food that never arrived. Wasted an hour (40 mins for food plus 15 mins to be seated) here just to drink one coffee?!! Ok, here is what happened. We arrived here around 1 pm, waited 15 mins to be seated. I mean, it s not too bad, till this point. We were super hungry and ordered food within 5 mins after being seated. Then after 40 mins, nobody talked to us about how and why the food hasn t arrived. The table seated before and after us has been served with food. We decided to pay for the coffee and leave since I got stomachache after such long wait. The waitress just shrugged and saying that it s holiday time and things like happens. You can get ur coffee for free . SERIOUSLY? Don t come here unless you want to be treated like this.
Best Fried Chicken and Waffles in Canada. Great environment and vibe.
An airy and pleasant place to have breakfast. Greeted warmly, a nice specialty of Bennys in many varieties. I had the house special, not knowing what a Benny was. (I know stupid American). Truely enjoyed a new treat for me.
In addition to being a stunning location, The Ruby on Johnson serves wonderful meals, which makes our stay worthwhile. They also provide excellent service.
A fantastic place to eat. The food is the best and the staff are even better. Thank you all. Dietary restrictions: Celiac safe.
It took a long time between ordering and actually getting our food. The food was ok, nothing out of the ordinary but really enjoyed the coffee. Food
It used to be free to get the Eggs Benedict on the croissant (instead of the bagel) but now they charge for the option. Adding bacon to the veggie benny used to be $5 (which was already steep) but now its $7; this is an insane upcharge for a few peices of bacon. Theyre pretty light on the hollindaise sauce so if you like it saucy its $2.50 to get extra (and its a very small cup extra). Overall, if you dont mind spending $25+ on breakfast youre not going to be disappointed, but you can get a similar breakfast anywhere else and probably have a shorter wait time.
Yuk. Ordered the specials, both of which were quite terrible. Soup tasted like it had gone bad and the chorizo was essentially fancy hot dog and was unfortunately on both of our meals. Would not revisit.
Amazing spot for breakfast/ lunch/ brunch. The food here has massive servings and is super filling. The staff are kind and social and make sure youre cared for. Try the Mama Fried Egg Benny, you will not regret it!
We had the waffles and the bacon & eggs, both were delicious and the coffee was superb, service was exceptional. Vegetarian options: Substitute avocado rather than bacon/sausage
This place is always packed, & I can see why!! I had the breakfast poutine, & it was fantastic. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived, but you can sit in the lovely lobby of the adjoining hotel. The service was attentive, but not at all overbearing, & I wound up taking half my meal home for dinner
A M A Z I N G breakfast! Definitely order the brisket Benny, it s one of a kind!
I am very glad that I gave this restaurant a chance. The food was delicious, and the service was great. On a Sunday morning, with a line up out the door, I was seated with food in front of me within an hour. Not too bad. I would come back again for sure.
Great place, delicious food , good atmosphere and friendly staff. Vegetarian options: Has good vegetarian option. And the food is tasty Food : 5/5 |
We were in search of a breakfast place in Victoria BC, Canada and located this one not far from our hotel. Good brunch options. Way too much food but so good. Server was great.
Great place to enjoy breakfast. The coffee is supurb, even their decaf. Steak and eggs were perfect. Fast attentive service who are both knowledgeable and friendly
Excellent breakfast.
One of the great breakfasts of Victoria that has something the rest cant match: seating. At peak times I have never waited longer than 20 minutes. That being said, the experience is good enough to warrant a 60 minute wait. Ive never had less than a great meal, but the standout is the Brisket Hash. A symphony managed with only 5 parts: potatoes, eggs, brisket, BBQ sauce, and hollandaise. It all works together seamlessly for a comforting and simple start to the day. Plus easy to eat with one hand so you can read a book.
Great food!!! Love the environment. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Best breakfast Ive had in Victoria. Excellent food, excellent service & good portions
Came here for breakfast every day on our trip to Victoria because we just couldn t get enough!! Keep doing your thang miss Ruby
Overall quite good. The proteins are dine very well. Will definitely visit again.
The chicken Benny are delicious
The breakfasts are creative, the staff are helpful and the decor is intriguing. Our family went to a few breakfast places in Victoria this one stood out.
We ordered take-out over the phone (we couldnt get the website to work for us) on our last morning in Victoria. They helped us pick gluten-free options, and everything was delicious, especially the potatoes. Dietary restrictions: They have GF toast. Kid-friendliness: The scrambled eggs, sausage, and potatoes were all a hit.
This just may have been the best breakfast Ive ever ordered at a restaurant. We ordered the berry waffles and the poutine benny and my oh my were they delicious. The contrast between the sweet and savory meals was delightful (my wife and I shared our meals). The waffles were honestly the best waffles I have ever eaten. Each bite nearly brought a tear to my eye from being so tasty. The only complaint is that I live about 1000 miles away from The Ruby . This restaurant alone tempts me to uproot my family and move to Victoria just to eat breakfast here every week. A side note, we were with our 17 month old baby and the staff was sooo kind and accommodating with him.
Amazing! The Rotisserie Chicken Hash was so good and I could order it again. Service was excellent as well. Would definitely recommend it if youre in the area.
What a great spot for some breakfast! Welcoming staff, cozy atmosphere, great coffee and cappuccino, staff go above and beyond to accommodate customizations and time accommodations. All their shredded hash breakfasts are absolutely delicious and packed with nutrition, I personally ask for well done hash so it s nice and sharp when they flip it over.
Came in for breakfast with a group of 11 and kids, we requested separate tables as we were going to pay separately, but they offered 1 big table together as they were quite empty. First issue, kids were not prioritized even though we mentioned that they were hungry and adult can wait. Server only took drinks order then prioritized smaller table to get their meal order as it will take short time to do so compared to our table regardless they were seated after us. Last thing was they added gratuity to our bill without prior information which left us no choice but to pay. Thats was the main reason we wanted separate table and being charge for service that we considered not there. Other than those issues that left us disappointed, food taste was incredible, freshly prepared ingredients with jam, sauce, everything taste amazing. Worth to visit for food only.
Food was very quick despite a busy time of day, and the Migas tacos were honestly mind blowing (assuming you like cilantro)
I CANT DESCRIBE HOW AMZING THIS FOOD WAS JUST KNOW IT WAS GOOD
Clean
The meals we ordered were awesome, but man, it took forever for our food to arrive. I was starving and totally forgot to snap a pic! But hey, it was absolutely delicious, no complaints there. The restaurant had such a cool vibe, and my kids had a blast posing with all the animal decorations for pictures. Kid-friendliness: One of the waitresses gave our boys colouring stuff.
Worth the line up, its not surprising this place is so popular. Had the fried chicken benny and Id get it again next time!
Love this record playing breakfast spot. Sadly was the only place I had poutine while in Canada. We also had the banana waffles not pictured that was very good as well. The poutine breakfast was delicious! Thank you!
We showed up 30 minutes before closing and the friendly staff got us seated for a table of 8. The service was great and everyone regally enjoyed their meals. A great combination of both healthy and comfort options. And the comfort food is fresh and as healthy as fat and carbs could be made. Def recommend stopping by.
Nice food
We were in Victoria for 6 nights & had breakfast twice at Rubys. Our take on the place: * Coffee is full bodied * We had granola, yogurt, omelette and bacon & eggs. All were well prepared and flavourful. Particularly tasty egg yolks (they were orange !) * Staff is attentive, quick & good natured * No wait time to get a table * They spin vinyl which is an added bonus * The vibe is relaxed & low key Kid-friendliness: Children are welcomed
Absolutely perfect breakfast spot! Wide selection (including about 10 choices for eggs Benedict), really good coffee drinks, and super friendly service. The restaurant is right off the lobby of the Best Western Plus. Highly recommend the hashes, bennies and standard breakfast.
Best breakfast around!
This place is seriously the best, must go-to breakfast places on the island. The food, atmosphere, and service is beyond incredible! There s great music, warm vibes, and it isn t too loud despite it being packed, rightfully so :)
We had a lovely breakfast here early on in our vacation. Its a nice spot with kind staff and a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. There was a great selection of food and we thoroughly enjoyed our bennies. I never expect to get a great coffee when sitting down at a restaurant but I was so pleased with the coffee here!
Great food, huge portions! The brisket was fantastic. Kid-friendliness: Kids menu available. Food : 5/5 |
The choice brunch joint in downtown Victoria! On our way for a South West Island retreat on a Thursday, we made a stop at the Ruby on Johnson around 10am and despite a brief line, were seated within 10 minutes (party of 2). We were immediately enthralled with the quaint and comfortable homestyle aesthetic and CCR album playing over vinyl. The food and service was even better! Our server, Lauren, served us the Mexican Eggs Benedict and the Traditional Eggs Benedict (with gluten free modifications). Food was absolutely delicious and downright filling. Well certainly be back for round 2! Dietary restrictions: Gluten-free modifications for the traditional eggs benny were easy breezey! Just ask away - our server was able to offer a GF English muffin and shredded hash fried in a separate fryer to avoid contamination.
The food and service could be better. The service was pretty slow, there were many empty seats with many servers but it took a while to get seated. Once we were seated, the servers didn t come back to check on us until we called for them to let them know we were ready to order. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles as I heard that it was a popular dish of theirs. I d have to say it s not as good as other places I ve been in. The fried chicken was okay, it wasn t necessarily that fried (a little bit soggy), and the waffles were too sweet and quite soft/mushy. My partner ordered a different dish (it was their daily special) and it contained hollandaise sauce but very little, so she asked the server to bring a bit of extra sauce, the server took over 15 minutes for us to get the sauce when the food was already served and getting cold, and also charged us for it. She didn t even tell us that there would be an extra charge. I wouldn t come back again; it was a disappointing experience, and I was pretty excited based on the reviews I saw.
Honestly, I was very surprised by our experience given the 4.5 rating. We stood at the door waiting for someone to acknowledge us for five minutes, we were the greeted by a very friendly guy (the reason I m giving this two stars instead of one). The service from that point was very poor, the server was incredibly slow, charged us for an add on that we didn t request and the food was mediocre. I try not to give negative reviews unless they are truly deserved but I strongly feel this is the case. We had someone tell us that The Ruby was a tourist trap and not very good before we went but we didn t think that was possible after seeing all of the positive reviews but unfortunately they were correct
AMAZING FOOD and SERVICE
First-time customer alert !! - Its nice that this is located near most of the stores and places downtown. - I tried their special since I wanted to try something different. - Its a chicken dish with tomato with some bread. (Chicken Breakfast Bowl -$21).. - My honest review, I did not like this. The chicken was supposed to be quoted on the quote from the waiter Juicy, but it was dry, and they just added a bunch of tomato sauce/pesto hollandaise sauce. - I requested more pesto hollandaise sauce and said it still didnt taste good/was dry, end of the bill, they charged me $2 for the sauce and did not mention the additional cost for it. - I also tried my partners Chicken and Waffle and I still was not a fan of it since they added gravy on everything. What do you do with the maple syrup then? add onto the already-soaked gravy waffle? - Would recommend putting both gravy and maple syrup on the side. - I would have been nice to try our first choice, but it was closed on a Wednesday. - Wouldnt say this place was anything special for me per the price & ratio cost.
Delightful experience. Great coffee & food. Staff are awesome. We had a celiac with us. They were really looked after and happy too.
Super yummy eggs Benny. Its always been busy when I went, so make sure to come early. Service was ok, its ways super load but the food is really good if you like lots of seasonings. Definitely worth a try it you like having flavor in you food, the portion sizes are also pretty good for the price, depending on what your getting.
Had unique food combinations. Nothing I ever had before and the food combination worked so well! (Rotisserie chicken, gravy, and waffles)
Yummy. Best breakfast I ve had in a while.
Ruby entry was in the lobby of the Best Western Carlton. Easy to go from the lobby to the dining room. We had smoked salmon and bagels. Fantastic tasting Salmon Best in town. Cant wait to get back and try other dishes.
the fried chicken and waffles was incredible. great spot for a bite and a drink, definitely recommend
Staff was awesome and so nice. Food was really good.
Quick service and excellent food. Breakfast poutine is worth a try. Love it here
So glad we went there on a non busy Friday instead of lining up on the weekend with our hangry toddler. All plates and cocktails were amazing and so was the service! Highly recommend and will gladly go back on our next trip to Victoria for sure. 10/10
Honestly I m disappointed. Been to Ruby s many times for brunch, but thought I d order something to go. Took 25 mins to get a chicken club with salad. I was waiting on the bench and I think my food was also siting there for a while. The bread was soggy, chicken dry, salad was already dressed, no,fork, so also wet and limp. I think it had to do with the tip I gave. For pick up, tipping is different. In this case I m only tipping kitchen staff, so I m not going to give 18-20%. More around 10-15% which I think is fair. I work at a job that is very dependent on tips, but I still never expect it and maybe at least 10% but omg, even liquor stores expect tips for just standing there and ringing in your purchase. Tips are not a given, and if you treat people poorly depending on that, that s just low.
Normally hit up the Douglas location, but since its temp closed I decided to drop into the Johnson location on Sunday. Jenna was an amazing server and the food was delicious! Ordered a brisket Benny (highly recommend the in-house made hot sauces over ketchup. The green is mild but smokey, and the red isnt crazy hot, so a mix of the 2 makes some of the more subtle flavours pop!)
Excellent service, amazing food, and a wonderful breakfast experience. The staff are very accommodating of disabilities as well as very helpful and friendly. I highly recommend this place for breakfast. The eggs Bennys are really good. Parking: Difficult to find street parking anywhere around there.
What a delightful place to come for a meal. The staff were amazing and the food was absolutely fabulous. I had the beef brisket hash and Ive never been so happy with a meal. No wonder its so well known and loved.
One of our favourite spots to go in Victoria! The Ruby is the best. Highly recommend it.
Wait times were horrendous on a Sunday afternoon. About an hour wait for meal to arrive. Service was non-existent. It took them so long to bring my coffee.. I dont understand it. People that were seated after us had finished their meals and left the table before we were even served. Sure, the hot sauce was great, but the serving portion was abysmal for 2 people (maybe 2 tables spoons, if that) so I cant see why I would ever go back. But thats just MY experience. Thanks.
Amazing food, decent to good service and a fantastic vibe. But PLEASE can you offer a different blend of coffee that isn t discovery? It s like drinking ground down liquified rubber tires! Even just offering another blend would be appreciated lol.
The food was awesome, and the service was better
Maybe I ordered the wrong thing here, but I didnt have a great culinary experience. Service was great and the place is a bustling, cozy, little establishment though. My eggs over easy were hard in the middle and the sausages were crumbling and werent that tasty. Potatoes were average as was the toast. Given the praise The Ruby has received from friends, I may give it another shot and try something else next time.
Great food, great service. Staff is amazing. Thanks for another good time.
Food is fabulous, always our go to Brunch place
Please don t ever visit this place if you don t want to leave with a bad experience! I went with one person more and next to us there was another couple, although we both ordered at the same time they got served and finished their meal before we even got our drinks. Please don t ever order hot chocolate because is a small serving of nesquik syrup for $6 dollars and it s not even hot
The food is good but the service is bad the waiting time is terrible. If a restaurant knows the busiest hours, it can consider having more employees to meet customer expectations. We ordered a chocolate and an iced tea, nothing complicated, and 2 pieces of chicken, two topped with potatoes and after 40 minutes of waiting, we decided to change restaurants because the wait was already too long. Sim doubt this is their area of improvement that has time and nevertheless They have not attended to it
We expected more from the food. Huge menu, but the bacon on my Benny was rock hard, the hollandaise was sort of sour tasting, dry sausages. Service was quick and super friendly. Just the food fell way short of what we were expecting especially for 20+ a plate
The food and the staff are great, the only thing that I would ask for is a better waiting system. We were told it would be a 25 minute wait, and it ended up being an hour. Vegetarian options: I saw at least one vegetarian item and there may have been more. Dietary restrictions: They have some gluten free options
We had a family lunch at the Ruby. The food was good. We enjoyed breakfasts, soups & salads. Great service - superb attention to dairy allergy and they even turned the music down (maybe always keep it lower?). Love the decor and homey feel. Thank you.
It wasnt very good omelet. It wasnt closed
I had a omelet and milk. The omelet fell apart and toast. I had to eat the inside, because I had no bottom teeth. I was disappointed. I wont go back there
luv the menu. staff are so nice. they play records! Food
We had brunch it was fantastic. Great location didnt have to wait too long before getting a table. Food : 5/5
Not what I expected given the multitude of 4/5 star reviews. Busy little restaurant, wait was rather long if you wanted a table(quicker to get a seat at the bar since hardly anyone has a small enough party for bar seating) The service wasn t quick at all, I sat for a long time before I even received water and even longer for the food. The meal was subpar in the flavour category, the hot sauce did a lot if not all of heavy lifting especially for the potatoes all in all I was disappointed
A definite must visit in Victoria.
