Incredible staff and lovely atmosphere

Found this place by accident just walking up street and decided to enter. We ordered the teriyaki chicken, szechuan beef and spring rolls for 2 people. Food was very tasty, beef was lean with fantastic flavor. The service was also excellent, its a family owned place and it shows in making us feel welcomed. One of the best places we have tried on our trip out west.

Came here with my husband and had a good fresh meal and the best service ever.

Quirky. The decor is part brew pub and part funky diner. Music was hits of the 80s played on solo piano. The brother-sister duo who run the place are very cute and funny. She was like the Chinese grandmother we never had! The food was a mixed bag. The tempura was excellent, the spring rolls were delicious but quite greasy. The vegetable chow mein had a little bit of a funny taste. Chicken teriyaki was good per the picky teen and the other teen s schezuan prawns were great and they weren t too spicy. The boba tea looked fun and the lemonade tea was tart and sweet. Server was helpful at navigating the paper straws. I would recommend for a group. Vegetarian options: Combo dinner or a la carte options.

First time going and will be bringing any friends and family I can next time we go, nicest owners I have ever met. Very slow service...they said it was due to holiday although the place was empty except for us and one other table. We had a chicken dish and a beef dish. Both were described as loaded with veggies. Not the case. Few veggies other than onions and celery and no flavor. The chicken was of poor quality. I would skip this place next time. On a positive note, the host and waitress were extremely friendly. Unfortunately their positive attitude couldnt make up for the bland food.

My husband and I had the most lovely dining experience here tonight because of how warmhearted, friendly, and caring the owners are. If I m ever looking for a place to eat that reminds me of the home cooked meals I had at my aunty s house growing up, Hope Key is where I d go! This is not a typical Chinese restaurant you can find even in Chinatown in Victoria. If you want to taste home-cooked Chinese food, this is the place. I suddenly miss He Kee. Ten years have passed in the blink of an eye. When I first came to college in 2013, I was very confused about what to eat every day. Because when driving downtown, I would choose He Kee when I missed Chinese food. When ordering fried rice or rice noodles, I would go to Lao Gan Ma desperately. The landlady and his brother are really very enthusiastic and helpful. At a time when everything here is unfamiliar, Hop Kee really makes me feel like home. When you dont know where to go, just come and have a meal. It was quite happy to chat with the bosses in Chinese to pass the time before going back to the car. In the blink of an eye, I haven t been back to Victoria for several years. I hope everything is well with the boss lady and my brother.

I came here with my husband and 4 kids aged 21, 18, 15, and 11. Our meal here was a highlight of our 5 day stay here in Victoria! We ordered the meal for four plus an extra entree and with 3 hungry teenagers we had leftovers. The food pleased the picky eaters and the food snobs alike in our big family. We all got bobba tea and decided the real fruit tea was the best. If the great food wasnt enough to make you happy, the joyful service and human love exuding from the service would make it a joyful family dinner as well. If everyone were as kind and friendly as these wonderful people what a world it would be. If only i lived here in Victoria, i would be a regular here!

Came in unsure what to expect. The atmosphere is the definition of kitschy, the service was wonderfully enthusiastic & decently quick, but the stand out was the food! While I admit our dish choices were rather white people Chinese food in selection... The food was honestly a big stand out from many Ive had before. Incredibly flavorful, tender meats, lite rice & noodles and comfortably filling. I highly recommend the honey garlic chicken & pork fried rice. If youre searching for some good eats, this will do the trick and more! Wow we went here based on the excellent reviews for dinner and must say they didn t disappoint! The food was delicious and the staff were so so friendly and lovely! Highly recommended! Kid-friendliness: The staff were absolutely lovely and very sweet with our daughter.

I walked by this restaurant many times and was very curious to check it out, and finally went here a couple of weeks ago. I was really only interested in the decor and cozy atmosphere; and was surprised by the unique vegan options, huge portions and wunderbar service. I had the Spicy Tofu Veggie Vermicelli hot pot and it was really really good. They had an option of 1-10 for spiciness and the spices they used were made from scratch in house. The portion was huge and I got 2 meals out of it. I want to try some of their other vegan options next time! My friends had combo dishes with meat and they were really happy with their meals saying that it was some of the best Chinese food theyd ever had. I didnt tell the servers it was my birthday dinner, but they made me feel like it was and went out of their way to accommodate my dietary restrictions and brought me free egg rolls (that didnt actually have any egg in them). The family who run this place are so great :)

Excellent customer service with great food! The food served here does not make you feel like youve over-eaten like most restaurants you go to. The restaurant environment is very neat with lots to look at, you can really tell that the owners put a lot of their personalities into creating a lively, funky, and welcoming space. Ive been thinking about it for a few days and I have to share. The Chinese food at Hope Key on Douglas was amazing. The owners Brenda and James are an adorable brother/sister duo I believe. The service was amazing, the food was unforgetable. So delicious, not greasy or oily, and piping hot. I have not stopped thinking about it for days now. The spring rolls were perfectly stuffed, the filling didnt fall out in the first bite. The broccoli in the beef and broccoli had an amazing crunch while still being soft. The chow mein and sweet and sour pork were so good. The prices were extremely reasonable with the quality of the food. My party scarfed the food so fast we didnt remember to get pictures. It was so good. I look forward to going back. Highly recommend 5 stars! Dietary restrictions: I have a food allergy that is a pretty common ingredient for Chinese and they made accommodations for me. This restaurant is one of the hidden gems of Victoria. The owners are lovely people and make everyone feel like a regular. Their regulars are treated like family. The food is good the portions are generous. The prices are reasonable. If you ask me, they serve the best bubble tea in town.

My husband Brad Martin and I just moved to Victoria and were looking for great Chinese food! Well we FOUND IT! Not only was the food unbelievable with very generous portions but the FAMILY is amazing. I was running late from an event I hosted and they were all waiting for me when I arrived! I was able to meet with them and chat and get to know them a little and they even threw in a nice surprise dish of Spring Rolls for supporting them our first time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Thank you. Good Chinese food (North American style), great flavours and good value. When the warm-hearted people running it learned I was a new neighbour they welcomed me with extra spring rolls in my takeaway order. Yum! They clearly love what they do and have fun with it, and are just fun people. All this is evident in the quality of the customer service, which is very kind, attentive and feels like family. Great quirky decor matches their bright personalities. Nice place.

I ate at this restaurant while shopping in downtown Victoria last year! The shop owners are really enthusiastic and care about how well you eat. The lunch buffet is also very cheap and the taste is just like the average Chinese buffet. But to be honest, the pearl milk tea is not that good.

I have to admit, I am absolutely shocked that this restaurant has a 4.4 rating from ~200 people. I usually only write positive reviews about a restaurant, however, this restaurant is the exception. The buffet food served was bland, dry and had been sitting by the entrance to the front door which opens out onto a busy downtown street (unsanitary). The chow mein had just come out so I tried some and it was very much undercooked and dry. I love chow mein, but I could not stomach this one. All of the meats were breaded and covered with way to much sauce. In addition, cabbage, carrots, and onion comprised most of the vegetables (there were a few pieces of broccoli in the mixed vegetables and corn in the wonton soup).The only saving grace of this restaurant (in my experience) was how welcoming and lovely the owners/servers were. The service was great and the only reason that I tipped. It is possible that they could have had an off day in the kitchen, but my friend and I will not go back to this place again.

Looking in from the street the restaurant looks dim and unspecial, but once youre inside youll find a cozy dining environment with super friendly staff. We came here for the dinner buffet with a deal from the Entertainment Book. The owner happily accepted it and was very kind showing us all the different kinds of Chinese food they served. I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience here. The food reminded me of home. I would definitely come here again on my next visit to Victoria!

Absolutely the worst Chinese buffet Ive ever eaten at!! It will be a miracle if we dont get sick!!! EVERYTHING was cold and super tough. The selection was just aweful! The wonton soup had corn in it!! Gross!!! We walked in at 5:30 on on a Saturday night and the place was completely empty. We should have taken note of that, but we didnt. The couple who run the place were super sweet so I feel a bit bad leaving such a bad review but it really was BAD! Im not sure if maybe ordering off the menu would be better but PLEASE dont eat from the buffet!!!

Friendliest and most welcoming service I ve had at a buffet in a long time. Though not the most diverse selection, the food is dynamite: especially the salt and pepper squid, tempura vegetables, and noodles. Lots of fresh fruit. Hope key is a neighborhood Chinese food diner with soul. The owners there are always friendly and thoughtful, they always greet with a smile, and the tempura fish is my favorite. My wife is quite fond of the wonton soup. You can also get bubble tea, combos, and specials which are always fun. The buffet is an eclectic mix of cuisines, a mix of everything! I prefer to order off the menu unless Im super hungry because the portions are already generous enough for me. If Im really really hungry though, the buffet is very cheap!

We had the buffet today and found the staff to be so friendly, but as for the buffet. Well we found the food to be cold, oily and had no flavor. There was a very limited selection for the money and we just couldnt eat or stomach the food to get our moneys worth. We certainly would not recommend this place unless you just want to meet some very nice staff.

We went for bubble tea which they did a fine job of but most people seemed to be there for the Chinese. Place is super kitschy. It s like eating in the weird rec room of some Chinese relatives you never knew you had. Maybe the place has had 5 different owners of the last 20 years and each one just kept adding to the decor of the previous owner. It s fun. Lots of people in there noshing on the food and enjoying themselves. Food looked like good reliable white guy Chinese but can t vouch for it. Little bubble tea lounge up the centre stairs.

Easy the best Chinese I have had. The reviews were right. I ordered combo A for one a bit worried about portions as I was hungry. Nothing to worry about. Probably enough for two. This combo is chicken chow mein, almond chicken and s&s pork. The chow mein has plenty of fresh vegetables and chicken cooked perfectly. The pork actually has mostly meat, not cheaper out with mostly batter. Almond chicken, like everything else is superb. Service is super friendly, unlike any other Ive had and its been consistently good, no bad surprises.

The taste is very good, the ingredients are relatively good, and the boss is very enthusiastic. The only drawback is that the buffet has a few dishes, but there is no other place to eat such fresh and delicious food at such a low price. PS: Milk tea is really good, you can choose your own coconut and pearls

This restaurant is one that is hard to describe, eccentric doesnt seem to do it justice. Its a place that immediately catches your eye when you walk in, despite the misleading exterior. Unless you have family in Victoria, Hope Key is the real bit of home you need. Its hard to have restaurants that simply make you feel like you belong inside, Hope Key oozes this feeling, piled high like their lunch and dinner buffets. The owners here are as interesting as the decorations that adorn the walls. The food has a very unapologetic feel, one that knows what you crave and how to satisfy it, but the owners make this place feel like home, will return the next time I find myself on the island

It s a great place to go for a full belly of savoury food. The owners are amazingly generous, not only with the portions that aren t buffet but also when they give so many homeless people a large meal when them come in. The owners are so friendly that it s almost like going home for a good meal. The lady shout outs as soon as you enter and fusses over you till the minute you leave. The food is so yummy, hot and fresh. Nine times out of ten you ll get some sort of deal on something or other. Or if you get the rest of your meal to go she ll usually top it up. It s small but comfy and they can tell if you actually want to be left alone and respect that. Awesome place.

A great Chinese restaurant with the nicest owners you ll ever meet! Always friendly, always welcoming, and they make an effort to remember each customer and make sure they have a good experience. The decor of the restaurant is very charming - there are unique decorations everywhere, and each chair has a funny title on it. The food is also very good; they have a buffet, as well as a full menu and my personal favourite bubble tea in the city. Overall, Hope Key is definitely one of my favourite restaurants in Victoria!

Best service ever

Standard American-style Chinese food buffet, which is fine if you like that but also no different from a dozen other places in town. The secret of Hope Key is that they have the best bubble tea around. They make theirs with real fruit instead of using powder like everywhere else in the area. You also get to choose your own proportions of jelly and tapioca balls.

Hi, the lunch buffet is average, but I think the a la carte dishes will be good. The owner is very nice. Well, if you want to chat and have a meal with friends to find an atmosphere, this is a good place.

Superb customer service and 100% worth your money

This was our first visit and it wont be the last. We chose the buffet to get to taste a variety of the dishes and everything was fantastic. The service was amazing and we felt like family! The owner even brought some dishes hot from the kitchen to our table. I cant believe weve lived here as long as we have and never been here before.

We were looking for a place to eat because we were starving and decided to go into the first restaurant we saw. This was one of the best decisions. The food was great, the owners are lovely people who do their best to entertain and make sure youre enjoying your meal. Plus the bubble tea is made fresh and is one of the best Ive ever had, at a very fair price too! I love the owners even though Ive only been there once and hope they continue the great service they provide.

Coming from someone who works in a customer service job, Hope Key is the absolute greatest example of outstanding service. I would elaborate, but I think you should see for yourself what amazing people run this restaurant. Plus, this is the best bubble tea in Victoria, and its reasonably priced. You HAVE to come here at least once in your life.

Excellent food, friendly staff

The staff is very nice, but the food isnt. I think its all packed or refrigerated food brought from China and all they do is just prepare it for you. I feel the food is done with no effort, and the staffstaff try to become as kind as they can possibly be to Compensate for their food.

Hope Key is one of the true secret gems of downtown. A small chinese restaurant/cafe with a delicious buffet option, as well as a potent bubble tea menu. Brenda, James, and their team are efficient and exceedingly friendly. Whenever I come to Victoria, I make a trip to Hope Key, and I havent ever been disappointed

The buffet wasnt very good. Most of the food was either too old or overcooked. I cant say how good the takeout is, though.

I feel sorry for giving them a 2 stars because the owners are really really nice. Location is good, especially considering its price. To be honest, these two stars are both for their hospitality. Even in an American-Chinese food standard this is much less than one can expect... Food is simply not good.

I love Hope Key. Ive been coming here since I discovered it in high school -- around 2010. Always amazing service. Lovely, casual atmosphere. Clean bathrooms. I feel welcomed like Im a family member when I come in to get bubble tea. I will always recommend this place.
