Good service nice stuff

I recently purchased MAiiZ stone ground Tortillas - using organic BC corn which is important to me. Simple healthy ingredients! I can t stop buying them! They are without a doubt, the very best ones I ve ever had or that are available that we can get here in Victoria or quite possibly in all of Canada next to Mexico of course. I hooked and I ll always buy my Tortillas from Israel the owner and chef @ MAiiZ. I can t wait to try his restaurant out. I m sure it will be delicious and fantastic just like everything else he does is. Chris Y

I ordered MaiiZ on a whim and was absolutely, completely, blown away by the flavour of this food. I am desperately trying not to order again tonight. Vegetarian options: I had all vegetarian food. The mushroom based choices were amazing, the corn was silly good.

The service is more than wonderful ..we were discouvering the area randomly when we passed by Diana and she is just sweet person to offer and let you tast their entiry hand made food. She offered us esquite, atole, horschata !! For me i travel an trt alot around but that was all new to me and very cheerful to my apetit ..give the more than 5 stars

Esquites (street corn) is the best I have ever had!! Also enjoyed the beef & chicken tinga tacos, the tortillas are the perfect match for the amazing flavours the proteins have! Highly recommend and wished I lived here so I could return time and time again!!!

This food is absolutely terrible. Not authentic mexican at all. The tacos were so dry and flavorless. Guacomole tasted like it was frozen. Chips were bland. Jaimaica had a cinnamon taste in it for some odd reason. Genuinely terrible, dry, flavorless food.

The chicken tinga tamale was delicious. We also ordered a bunch of tacos and they were okay. The barbacoa was a bit dry and not as flavourful as expected. The shells were pretty decent, but Ive had better stone ground tortillas. Prices were inflated. I was really disappointed by the fact that they charge $1 for a slice of lime. Ive been to a million taquerias and not once have I been charged for a lime. A whole lime costs $1, and they probably get wholesale prices which are even cheaper, so to charge that for a single slice is ridiculous. They will upsell you at every corner - do you want to add lime, maybe some cheese, do you want horchata, how about a dessert. And if you add cheese, lime, or salsa etc., they wont tell you that its extra unless you ask. Its not listed on their menu board, only on the online menu once you select a dish. You should be telling your customers that information upfront. As someone who worked in restaurants for 10 years, I would upsell my customers, but not without first being transparent about how much it would be. TLDR: food is decent, pricing and customer service need improvement. Personally I wont be back.

One of the best places located in downtown Victoria to grab a bite to eat. Id recommend this place to anyone that would ask me where to go! Keep up the great work. :)

I just have three things to say: The tortillas, the street corn and the hibiscus water. Amazing! No, that s actually not true; there s way more to say, for instance the chef inspires with his passion and commitment to the cause and the place it s greatly located in the Main Street of Chinatown so don t miss this place out when you come to take pictures. Also, tamales are a little piece of Mexico in your mouth. Trust me, I m Mexican. ;)

Amazing kind staff. They make the BEST Pazole! A must try. Just like the Pazole I had in Oaxaca! I ve been thinking about it non stop since I last had it and can t wait to go back again! Nice location too!

I love this place. The food is genuine in every sense, and delicious. The service is just as genuine and thoughtful. I was introduced to huitlacoche there and Im obsessed.

The menu featured interesting items like grasshopper and special mushrooms, but the dishes were overly salty to taste the items. They focused on making the tortillas colorful, and the dish lacked flavor. I found it terrible that they charge extra for every topping. When salsas are usually displayed on the tables. Out of all the Mexican places Ive visited, this was the most disappointing. The prices were too high for the quality and quantity of the food. Im sorry to be harsh, but I was not impressed.

Brillant Mexican in the middle of Chinatown. Everything is made from corn (no wheat here!) locally grown in BC. Chef showed me the whole process of grinding etc. Best churros ever.

Wow. Nicely tucked in China Town, this place was a real treat. Authentic Mexican food. The staff are super friendly and appreciative. Highly recommend. You wont be disappointed. Kid-friendliness: My two teenage daughters, who can be very picky at times, loved it here.

We had such high hopes for this place my partner and I are both Mexican and saw that they had a tortilla maker so we went in and order the beef and huitlacoche it was pretty pricey about $20 for 3 tacos. The tacos were super super dry and the tortilla was not fresh it was stale and dry as hell. It didn t come with lime and one 1 of each salsa. When we asked for some they said they would charge us for a single salsa and 1 lime but wouldn t this time. For beef tacos lime should always be included especially when the meat is that dry. Place was nice and the workers are too which is why I rated the service well. I literally never leave reviews but I was so disappointed because it was our last meal in Victoria before leaving.

First time here and we were genuinely wowed. Authentic Mexican with delicious flavours! We got the beef and chicken tacos and they were elite. Their in house made organic corn tacos are something really special. We had the fresh churros for dessert and they were the best we ve ever had. Maiiz will definitely be making our regular rotation.

By far the most authentic Mexican Restaurant north of Mexico! Will be back again soon! Vegetarian options: I had the enchiladas which they made vegetarian for me but large selection of vegetarian menu items

Only place to get Mexican food in victoria, so good I always come back every week from eating in to delivery quality is always top priority and consistent. I recommend everything on the menu and it is safe for celiacs! Its a MUST try!!! Dietary restrictions: Celiacs heaven!

If you re in Victoria, Canada and you don t stop here to grab a bite, you re truly missing out. Right in China Town we found some of the best Mexican food we ve ever tasted! From the tacos, to the quesadillas, the chilaquiles and even down to the guac and chips, everything we put in our mouths was delicious and left us wanting even more! A cute little place with just a handful of seats, and the staff there were all amazing. They made us all feel very welcome and explained the whole menu to us as well as the concept of the Maiiz (corn) that they use in their tortillas and chips. We left very happy that we decided to dine at Maiiz and if I make it back to Victoria, I will definitely be making my way back here as well!p

Right in china town in beautiful Victoria this little gem of a restaurant stole our hearts (and stomachs!) The staff was wonderful, the atmosphere was cute and the food was out of this world. One of the best meals I ve ever had. Everything we had was amazing. Especially the salsa for the tacos. But the quesadilla was my personal favorite.

Very friendly staff, yummy tacos and pozole soup! Also fresh churros for dessert and horchata. Comfort food at its finest, but if youre daring they also offer a grasshopper taco which have a nice mix of salty and spicy.

We had a great first-time experience at this eatery in Victoria s Chinatown. Our son is celiac and we were very pleased to learn that everything on the menu is gluten free. The atmosphere in the restaurant is very appealing and the staff are so welcoming. You can tell they really care about their customers. We got takeout but will definitely eat in during our next visit to Victoria. We ordered the beef barbacoa tacos and mushroom tacos and they were delicious and so fresh! We will be back! The best Mexican food I have ever tasted! Found this great place on a recent visit to Victoria and it shouldn t be missed. I live in Southern California, have lived and traveled extensively in Mexico and known great Mexican cuisine - and Maiiz Nixtamal is at the top! The richness of the corn flavors, the nuances of the sauces and the incredible treat of the Huitlacoche Corn Truffle are the best. Service was also excellent!

The food is delicious, full of flavor and each dish is unique in many ways. It also happens to be fully gluten free. I went two days in a row, I needed to try to the chilaquiles after having all of the tacos the day before.

I don t often post reviews but Maiiz is a must do if you ever go to Victoria. We had their chicken and beef tacos, guacamole nachos, and the ice cream and wish we ordered more. With every bite I felt myself itching to eat more. Secondly the service was amazing, all the staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, and by the end of our dinner the chef even came out to ask us what we thought of the food.

Never eaten at such a good Mexican restaurant in Canada. In my opinion it is the best I have been to. The dishes are delicious, and are very authentic. The chef prepares them with great care and passion. During this dining experience, my mind drifted back to Mexico and I thought about when I was there. It made me very happy to eat at this restaurant and when I return to Victoria, I will come to eat here again. Thank you so much for the wonderful experience. I highly recommend it!

We are visiting from Ontario and Mexican food things to eat out but we find it difficult to find a place that is gluten free not just gluten friendly. When we got there the owner was so friendly and explained everything to us. We had the best Mexican food we have ever had so much flavour and honest food without the fear of being exposed to gluten. Dietary restrictions: I am gluten free and dairy free due to medical issues. No issue with gluten at all and they were able to make it dairy free very easily

stop sleeping on MAiiZ. especially thw Pozole. it is one of our all time favourite dishes in the world. i love the beef barbacoa. the flavour will take you to new heights. we love the authenticity of and hands on production in house. unreal spot, nothing like this anywhere else in canada.

Found this place on Google and loved the look of it. My family ordered the chicken tings and barbacoa tacos. Both were really good and my kids loved the colored taco shells. I ordered the barbacoa chilaquiles. The green salsa was a little tarter than I expected, but it was still delicious. I love that their tortillas are made in-house. The hibiscus tea was also good. Not to sweet like it can be sometimes. I would definitely go back.

Ill be very honest, they were left to my whim, its a bizarre attempt at Mexican food. If youre craving Mexican food, dont go to that restaurant! High portion costs for both food and water. We ordered barbacoa tacos, pozole, and horchata water. The taco meat had a good flavor, but the combination of cabbage and onion broke the flavor, genuine of a barbacoa taco, the tortilla is a little stiff but it has a good presentation. The pozole... oh the pozole!... that doesnt taste like pozole... As the chef said, it is his creation, so if you want to get to know it, it is an excellent place, perhaps it is a good option to define your culinary taste.

This is an amazing place! We felt like home. We love Mexico and having someone like Chef Israel bringing our culture to Canada made us feel proud. Thank you for sharing a little piece of Mexico with Victoria!

The food is wonderfully authentic, traditional and fresh. My mother is from Colombia and my step-father is from Mexico. They were truly pleased with their incredible meal.

This may sound corn-y, but this place is a-maiiz-ing. We ordered the mushroom tacos and huitlacoche quesadilla. Both of them were delicious. I loved the multicolour tortillas that matched the colours of the Mexican flag! What a creative touch. The service was fantastic. Chef Israel was super knowledgeable about all the ingredients and I admired his passion for food. All the staff were really friendly and did a great job. We will definitely be back!

January 10 early evening we walked in to Maiiz, by chance. The environment, food, products and staff were super!! Truly enjoyed the whole experience. Had good conversations and explanations to the questions we asked and were v pleased with learning everything is organic , mostly made in house and gluten free. Their baked buns come from theartofslowfood up the street. Loved it all. Thank you.

We got the tamales. I ve been searching for a good tamale since I moved back to Canada from L.A. 30 years ago. My quest is over. The flavour and texture honestly made me emotional. Eat here.

Very cool place. The owner(?) was extremely nice and let us come back and see the the machine that makes fresh tortillas, they even let us have a fresh one right off the machine!! Ive eaten at every mexican restaurant in Victoria this is by far my favourite!!

Atmosphere: I came in as it opened, it was clean and well presented inside with many different salsas and sauces made in house. Service: The service was excellent. The moment I entered, I was greeted and shown passion for their restaurant and how the tortillas are made. Food: I ordered the chicken tinga tacos. It tasted very fresh and was nicely presented. The flavours were on the light side, I feel it could use a bit more seasoning. The salsa on the side was also very nice tasting. Next time, however, I would ask for one with some heat to it. Overall I would recommend and would love to come back. I bought some homemade chips and salsa and they pair beautifully.

Just happened upon this place while searching for dessert in Chinatown with the fam. Saw that they had ice cream, so we stopped in. Wonderful service from the first hello! So friendly and helpful. The woman who helped us heard it was our first time in and she told us all about the food and how everything is prepared in house. We were sold. The kids had the ice cream and loved the tasty purple treat. The hubby and I decided to get tacos for dessert (or would that be considered second dinner??). They sounded too good to pass up. So glad we tried them. Absolutely delicious! The salsa was also top notch. If we are ever in Victoria again, we will definitely stop in again.

Today was my first experience with this delightful, small Mexican restaurant in the heart of Victorias bustling Chinatown. I had the Chicken Tinga tamale for lunch and it was seriously the best thing I have eaten in months. Hoelune provided impeccable service and was even able to compliment Chef Israel Alvarez Molina who was in the middle of the open kitchen making (yes, making!) tortillas (which they allowed me to sample - delicious!!!) I came away with an array of beautiful house-made goods - a bag of tortilla chips, jars of salsa and mole, and a bag of dried ancho peppers, and a package of tortilas - for my own cooking, though Im not sure why I would make my own Mexican food when I have this amazing place nearby. A not-to-be-missed culinary treasure.

The passion and pride in this food is on display. So fresh and delicious, I want to eat here every day of my visit. The pozolé and chicken tinga tacos were such a good blend of flavors. The Agua de Jamaica was just perfect. Usually I have had such sweet Jamaica it should have been a dessert, but this was the right blend to make it so much more flavorful. If you get a chance to try this place, please take it. I am so glad we did.

$22.60 for 3 small tacos?? I m still hungry, I feel ripped off, I could ve eaten 8 of those. You should be charging $9 for 3 tacos. They re not even that big.

I m so pleased we ventured to MaiiZ for lunch today for delicious and authentic homemade tortillas. The passion from these folks is evident as soon as you walk through the door. This place is a vibe. The food, the chefs, the host and most importantly, the amazing food. Thank you.

Pozole to die for!

I recently dined at Maiiz and had the pleasure of trying their beef tamale, and let me tell you, it was absolutely mouthwatering! Not only was the tamale incredibly tasty, but the generous portion size and impeccable presentation made the experience even more enjoyable. The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring that every aspect of my dining experience was superb. If youre a fan of authentic Mexican cuisine and want to treat your taste buds to an unforgettable meal, dont miss out on Maiiz. You wont be able to resist their amazingly delicious beef tamale!

I dont know if this place has gone downhill since the other reviews on here but went here yesterday, was optimistic about the place as their menu and atmosphere was nice. Grabbed chicken tacos and quesadilla, beef barbacoa tacos and chicken pozole. Paid about 85 for this, was the most disappointing Mexican food experience, no flavor and bland, beef was dry when it should be moist and almost melt in your mouth, pozole was again bland, tortillas were dry and not like authentic ones, not anywhere near authentic Mexican food. Hard pass, especially for the price you pay. I will say their hot sauce that they sell was amazing. So maybe just buy that and make your own tacos lol.

What an unbelievable experience. The chef cleared our plates and I was so excited about their corn that he gave us a tour of their tortilla production in the back of the house and talked to us about the sourcing of their ingredients (Local sources by the way!). I have never tasted such quality Mexican food in Canada. I feel like that was the first time I ve had true corn. The chicken tacos tasted amazing!! Street corn was bomb!! My friend had the vegetarian flat bread (we forget the name) but it was a thicker corn base and was raving about it. We each bought a jar of their salsa to go. The lady at the front was so enthused about their food, she gave us detailed descriptions about the food and spot on recommendations.

These guys have perfected corn. The chips, the taco shells, huarache, tamale, all so incredibly fresh and delicious as well as the toppings. The taco shell has the best texture of any taco shell Ive ever eaten. I loved the grasshopper taco. Definitely worth a try. Its a perfect snack.

The food here is amazing and the staff are so friendly. Pricier than your average tacos but these aren t your average tacos. Rarely does food excite me anymore, and this place excites me.

An incredible space that focused on the magic of making amazing tortillas and unique food that is not often experienced at Mexican restaurants. This is the only place we got to try huitlacoche and it was really great. The salsa was delicious and the tacos were some of my favorite I have eaten. We had to do a quick one due to time but next time hope to have dinner here.

Enjoyed a delicious and light lunch here in the heart of Chinatown. Staff were all so friendly and happy you can see they enjoy what they do. The tortilla production line was cool to see. Food is fresh and tasty!

Food was good, but $20 for 3 small tacos is absurd. I will not be going back. $20 for 5 would be reasonable. I spoke with a coworker who said the same thing. This is not a spot for people living and working downtown. Maybe the tourists dont mind overspending.

I don t write reviews often but MAiiZ blew me away! Not only the food was incredibly delicious, the server came out from behind the counter for every guest and gave them such a personalized recommendation and had a genuine conversation with them. The chefs were singing along while cooking and the atmosphere was amazing. Best food I ve had the pleasure of stumbling upon in Victoria!

The only restaurant to which I put 5 stars everywhere is this one! An authentic Mexican in the heart of Chinatown it may surprise you but as soon as you walk through the door you find yourself propelled into the real Mexican atmosphere under the sound of Los Angeles Azules traditional dishes such as pozole, esquites, tamal and the friendliness of the staff makes it one of my favorite places in Victoria now !

i cannot recommend this place enough. the menu is vegetarian friendly and nothing you get will disappoint. the esquites are absolutely delicious and i am more often craving them than not, now that i ve had them. the staff are so so so pleasant and kind. i always leave smiling and have to hold in my urge to skip back to my office. i m not even exaggerating, if you re having a bad day, just go in there and start a conversation with literally anyone working there and grab yourself a snack. the chefs will greet you if they see you and come out to have a convo with you to give you recommendations. today he told me about nopales salad and let me try it with chips! absolutely delicious. their selection of house made salsas and sauces are also absolutely devine. they are quick to give you samples if you re unsure of something and they have it available. i love this place!!! thank you for being a joy, Maiiz <3

Great little place that I found just walking by that didnt seem to show up on my map under restaurants. Super good tacos though, super original, they make their own corn tortillas on site and you can watch the process. Service was super friendly and a great atmosphere with Latin music. Would definitely recommend! Parking: Limited paid street parking, paid lot just one block up. Wheelchair accessibility: Ground level entrance, no major lip.

I was blown away by the food. I ordered Flautas which are their special right now (pls keep them on the menu) and I was very impressed. I was in Mexico this year and while the food was obviously amazing I wasn t always sure what I was eating was gluten free. So to have food just as good AND celiac safe here in Victoria is the bomb. Food and service were excellent. Even our picky kids loved the barbacoa tacos. I wish there was more seating and tables for 4+, but I would definitely come back here.

Hands down the Best Pozole (Mexican Soup) that I have tried in the US and Canada. You have to try it! The people are all super friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is very clean and has such a nice ambience and Mexican music. Highly recommended

A little expensive for a Chinatown place. Went for brunch with a HS basketball team. Food was flavourful but serving sizes were smallish. After a $20+ order, a few ordered a second. Music was nice but the exposed seating layout doesn t make it comfortable for brunch with a small group.
