Stage: A neighborhood Bistro with simple bistro food focused on responsible growing practices and set in a professional yet relaxed locals friendly environment.
Great food and wine list. You can always count on something new each time you drop in. They order from local farmers and base the menu around what's best of the season. They rotate their wines by the glass to pair daily. Overall - you get the sense it's run by people putting in the effort and doing what they love. Just go.
My favourite place for a cozy evening out with the girls! Boujee vibes with a relaxed atmosphere. Cocktails are delicious, food is amazing! I love that they change out their menu, every time we come in it feels like a new experience. The staff are so accommodating and friendly. Very inclusive space, they make you feel like a regular.
From out of town, our first visit, came here due to high ratings before attending a performance at the Belfry. Great ambiance, busy, good energy. Helped with the menu by our competent male server. The sticky pudding for dessert was a great ending.
Small plates, great atmosphere. Was here some years ago and came back again. Stake was made medium rare without asking and pre-cut before arriving to the table. Belfry Theatre in the neighbourhood if you want to watch a play too.
Excellent food and wine menus with lots of incredible options. The pork stuffed olives were fantastic and the Brie was delightful. The service was among the best service I have ever had. They hung up our wet rain coats and checked in with the table at the perfect times. When we got up to leave we were promptly met with our coats at the door. I cannot recommend this place enough and I cannot wait to go back!
Excellent food, minimalistic with spices but focusing on enhancing the product itself. Love the approach. Sebastian who served our table is a top professional, who understands the definition of personal, attentive wine service. Compliments to Chef Finn and Sebastian - a perfect match!!
So glad this European & Natural Wine Bar / French Bistro is in my cozy Fernwood neighbourhood. It is a Victoria must. Happy hour 4-6 is such a great deal but the French-inspired food is well priced, in general. Also generally open late. Check hours as they change with the season. Best Burgers & Fries ever, but also the hand made pasta, beef tartar & steak are go-to’s. The veggie dishes are always made from the most local and fresh ingredients. The bread is freshly baked and comes with rotating, European cheeses. The staff go above and beyond, every single time, and the owner & the chef are always offering creative long table events. If you aren’t impressed by their ever-changing wine list, which includes low intervention and natty wines among other European and local winemaker stars, they have amazing cocktails. This local neighbourhood restaurant is a gem. Victoria is lucky to have Stage.
My friend and I came for dinner on Tuesday evening and absolutely loved it. The food was tasty and the vibes were great. Service was on the slow side, but our server was very friendly and knowledgeable (we had lots of questions) so we didn’t mind. Definitely will be coming back!
Great night! Will come again
We were six for dinner, it was not explained to us that the menu items are for sharing. So when we ordered what we thought was an entree ie the rockfish, all we received was a piece of rockfish without any sides. The pasta is so small that it couldn t be shared, for $29 for cheese pasta one would expect more than a salad plate size dish. I wish the server had explained how the menu worked. We will not be back, even for a sharing menu portions are small for the price and quality. Parking: Have to find street parking
We had an incredible experience at Stage! The whole idea is to share so you can try many things. And go with an open mind because they change their menu on a regular basis. The music is awesome, the atmosphere is very Europa and the food....incredible!
From a total experience perspective, unmatched. Humans who love what they do; huge give-a-shit factor; and food and drink that heals the soul.
Very noisy but great place. Recommend highly
Great food and great service! Very friendly !
Pleasant room. Helpful, friendly, and unobtrusive service. However, the food was really disappointing very small servings, even accounting for being on the Happy Hour menu, and expensive. Good bread on the charcuterie plate (no board & not enough for sharing). The rest was disappointing. Definitely not value for $$$. The Room is pleasant, but I doubt we ll return.
Yeah it was that good. Go all the way after dinner with a bottle of wine, and have dessert too you ll need a walk afterwards, but will have a smile on your face.
Service- Service was a mixed bag initially, we did not know what to expect. We were asked us whether we would like [specific brand of pinot gris] or [specific brand of cab sab]. When we expressed confusion over why we could only have one of two wines, rather than choosing from the extensive wine menu, we were told these were the only options with the set meal. No explanation of why. Now I wonder whether the two wines were paired with the different elements of the meal, but this only occurred to me after we left, since it was never explained, even when I asked. Otherwise, the servers were attentive but not intrusive. They re-folded our napkins nicely when we went to the washroom which was unique and pleasant. Food- Neither me nor my husband enjoyed the food. The starter was crudite, bread and cheddar/brie, and a slab of pork on a plate with a sweet sauce on it. Salad: a massive pile of sliced endive with a floral vinagerette which was okay. Entrée 1: pasta noodles with melted butter as a sauce, which was a bit hard to finish as for some reason it tasted just like movie theater popcorn butter. There were no spices, vegetables, or anything else in the sauce- it was just melted butter. Entrée 2: A whole rockfish, deep-fried on a plate by itself. My husband who can normally eat anything could only eat half as it was super salty. He also had pomme frites which were the best part of the meal and very delicious. Not a single part of the meal was plated attractively or garnished. Serving sizes were large, which is nice if the food is edible but unfortunately this was barely the case. This entire meal, with one bottle of wine, cost almost $300. Wine- Plenty of nice options (though again, our wine was pre-set). Wine went well enough with the meal. Ambience- The ambience was the highlight of the dinner. The restaurant itself is in an old, brick building, and the exposed beams, warm glow of low lighting, and open kitchen make it a cozy place to pass the time. Because of this, I would consider returning in the future (but only for drinks).
What a stunning find. Perfect in every way. Thank you!
Love being able to walk through a eibe bar and chat with the server about the different varietals and vineyards they carry. Food was to notch and unique- besides having the best sticky toffee cake this side of Cornwall!!
Always made feel like a VIP in Stage. From the amazing front of house staff that always remember my name even if I havent been in months, to the waiters, bar staff and food. Always a 5 star experience. The candlelit setting is so romantic and the wine list is out of this world. Its a cant miss If youre in Victoria.
Had a lovely experience appreciate that we weren t rushed out. Loveliest server with an Irish accent. One of my favourite burgers in town.
Come with a full stomach. Stage has a great atmosphere and nice drinks. Go for that! The food menu feels like a prank. Bread and butter. Canned olives. French fries. Sliced sausage with ketchup. Raw veggies with ranch. Hand cut noodles (maybe just clamshell pasta) with...cream? Prepare to be underwhelmed if food is on your mind. Drinks and a snack.
Our fourth of fifth time here and we all agreed its quickly becoming our favorite place in Victoria.
We really enjoyed our experience here. We opted for the Sunday family meal (set three courses) and it was really good. The atmosphere and location are lovely and our server was great.
We went for happy hour. The martinis were delicious. Our server was great. He answered all our questions about dirty martinis!! I gave the food 1 star only because the portions of our appetizers were so disappointing. The charcuterie board would be laughable if it wasnt so expensive ($22). 5 small slices of sausage, 3 slices of cheeze, a few pickles, and 1 slice of bread... all on a small dinner plate. I would go for drinks but forego any food.
always happy to dine at Stage...and see Anna and Clare, we always feel so welcome and like the innovative food, last night the Endive with parmesan was our favourite...noise level is always a tad high for us, but love being in such a busy place
We had a fab night. The bartender really was exceptional. We ll be back!
lovely evening and great happy hour deals
Very impressive and lovely atmosphere
Amazing place to go !
Best restaurant experience in Victoria. Food, drinks, service, management, ambience, patio, burger all 5/5.
$18 for one 6oz glass of wine. We were absolutely shocked. Their menu does not list prices for wine by the glass, so you are instructed to ask your server (nice tactic). She presented us with 3 options, the first one mentioning $11. We expected the other options to be similar prices especially since we mentioned we came for Happy Hour (which turns out they do not offer in the evenings). By the way our server never came to check on us, we found her outside the building with her jacket on as we left. But the fact that you can charge $18 for one 6oz glass of wine (plus tax and tip) without advising the customer beforehand is so outrageous. We will never go back. Disgusted. Furthermore their menu is so vague its impossible to understand but we were told one slice of cheese is $15 and does not come with any bread, crackers, etc. Their ceiling is duct taped with a huge hole in it. No wonder they had no customers.
Incredible food, service and atmosphere TOP NOTCH . . . An incredible surprise! HIGHLY recommend! We ll definitely be back. Worth it.
We dine here semi-regularly and the expertise is always top-rate. Incredible food, inventive menu, great wine selection, lovely staff and charming setting
Dietary restrictions: gluten-friendly options Food
The staff were extremely friendly and efficient. The bartender was knowledgeable and very entertaining.
Highly enjoyable evening at Stage. The food and service were exceptional. We will be back!
Stage continues to be my absolute fave. Not just in Victoria. My favourite ANYWHERE. Food is Michelin worthy. Service is exceptional and the vibe is perfect: but shhh don t tell the tourists.
Amazing wine selection, thoughtful and creative food. If you aren t sure what something on the menu is, order it anyway and prepare to be blown away!
The service was fast, friendly, and knowledgeable. The place is cozy and has great atmosphere. The food and drinks left my friend and I looking forward to the next visit! If I would say one tiny tiny negative was simply that its so dimly lit (at least at our table) that I had to use my phones flashlight to read the menu, but Im definitely reaching on that front. Will definitely be back!
Love everything about this place
A phenomenal dining experience. We ate here on the first of our two nights in Victoria and the food and service were so outstanding that we decided to return again for our second night. Thanks to Claire and Sebastian for taking such great care of us. Victorian must do.
Certainly has become one of our very favourite places to dine out . . service, and food are superb . . .
I surprised my fiance with a dinner at Stage for her birthday two weeks ago. It was a place I always thought wed like but we just never got to. We both really enjoyed it. Fantastic service, great food and drinks. We had the daily chefs choice 3 course and all of it was spectacular. My only small complaint was that being in the corner there was a speaker above us and the music was a little loud, but I figure if sitting elsewhere its not so bad. Still didnt hamper the evening, great place and we will be back.
Great service and delicious food!
A fantastic vibe, staff were great and the food was excellent. A hidden gem that s worth seeking out. Highly recommended
Incredibly pleasant atmosphere, very delicious and authentic food and drinks! The service is top-notch.
We had an exceptional experience. From the moment we walked in, the service was impeccable. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made us feel right at home. The food was nothing short of fantastic. Every dish we tried was expertly prepared, showcasing the chefs incredible skill and passion for creating a creative and diverse menu. This was our favorite stop in Victoria, and we cant wait to return on our next visit. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an outstanding dining experience.
Delicious dinner with excellent wine. Service was very attentive and professional. Recommend, especially, the bbq d shishitos and the steelhead. Happy hour menu is a very good deal also.
Such a wonderful dinner! Great selection of foods and wines, extremely knowledgable staff and nice atmosphere. The food was spectacular!
After several wonderful experiences, our last visit was a disappointment. Prosecco served was flat. Wine offerings by the glass were very limited and not up to snuff. Steak tartare came without any side of baguette or crostata and was very bland.
Music inside was too loud for my standards, but a highly recommended restaurant
A very tasty dinner with good white wine!
The attention to detail and passion for food and wine at Stage Wine Bar truly shine through. Its clear that they are committed to providing an outstanding dining experience. The Menu du Jour provided a significant amount of food and was a culinary journey I wont soon forget. The staff was delightful and their knowledge of the menu was impressive.
Loved the food and great wine selec
Everything was fantastic!
Everything was perfection. An absolute gem.
Great food, great service, great atmosphere.
A fabulous night out with excellent food, wise and tasty cocktail nd wine recommendations and great service. Thanks Stage for a great night of food and drink.
Had the most wonderful evening at Stage. Delicious food from starter to mains, with the portion size of the mains being far more generous than expected. The wine list is the best we ve encountered in town and our server was very knowledgable and helped us select a bottle that matched our tastes. The cherry on top (apart from the expertly crafted cocktails at the end of the night) was the service. Our servers were kind, helpful, attentive, relaxed and very good at their jobs. We d heard good things about Stage and our night there lived up to them all. Thanks to the whole team!
The food was delicious, only a little expensive.
Everything was excellent! Including Jordies service. Desserts were ok. Jorge. Food : 4/5 |
A group of us ate there last night. The food and service was outstanding. It has a really cute, neighborhood ambience except for the music. It was so loud I couldnt hear the conversation at the other end of our table, only 2 people down even after askingto have it turned down. It was also very unpleasant music. For that reason only, I wont return. Too bad as it has so much else going for it.
best bread ive ever eaten in my life
Okay, theres a lot I can say: that the service was great, that our server was knowledgeable and steered us right, that the steak was great (if a little overpeppered), that the location was lovely, or the drinks were amazing. Theyd all be true, but theyre not the most important thing. The most important thing is that the bread was so good, we ordered it again for dessert. Dont sleep on the bread.
Exquisitely, expertly-crafted food and a stellar wine list (along with a huge range of spirits and liquors) in a relaxed setting. We are from what is widely considered a destination food city, and Stage would be an a top level restaurant in any city in the world.
A rather disappointing experience. Went as a group of 3, and while the appetizers were good, 2 of our mains left us a bit shocked. One was the Smokies...... which was $37 for 2 good (but nothing special) dogs and 4 fingerling potatoes with like a fancy honey mustard sauce. It just wasnt worth the cost..... Second, was the $51 steak frites! It was basically (and Im really not kidding about this) 2 thin pieces of steak (around 6oz total?) covered with a TABLESPOON worth of pepper and peppercorns as part of the peppercorn sauce. I could taste nothing but pepper, couldnt even tell if the steak was any good. I should have sent it back, but I hate letting a peice of meat go to waste. The last meal was the Rockfish which was admittedly tasty and well balanced. With the bill totaling $270 at this point (includes a $60 bottle of wine) we decided to skip the soft serve ice cream dessert options and go elsewhere. We just simply wont be returning.
I need to update this review as every time we go to Stage we are always left more impressed than the last. The current menu is absolutely outstanding. There is flavour combinations going on that will make you question everything you think you know. With so many great restaurants to choose from in Victoria Stage is still a cut above the rest. 11/10 Love going to Stage
Never thought Id be dipping a sliver of raw onion into a tuna orange dip in the middle of a stack of raw veggies and loving it. The Stage is our go-to for interesting, big meals.
Menu was limited, crudite was difficult to eat and lacking substance, waiter did not ask how we would like our choices delivered. Staff was inattentive and disengaged. Left hungry and would not got back.Did enjoy the martini and rose! Parking: Street parking where you can find it
Burgers are back on the menu - perfect for warm sunny evenings on the patio. Had another great meal after a long week - shared a few bites with the pup. Cocktails, beer, wine and many tasty items were enjoyed.
Wonderful service and food. Lovely atmosphere. Wine complements food really well.
We felt we were well taken care of professionally and friendly. The food was outstanding
This location is ideal for any event; the food and service are exceptional.
The food waa excellent and I will certainly come back - thankyou! We dined in - a bit noisy but not much you can do about that.
Wonderful food, engaging staff, awesome atmosphere- Well be back!
We have been here twice (we would not have gone back except it was chosen by a friend for a night out). Both times we found the food disappointing. The three course menu is a bit flimsy in terms of what you get, but more salient is that it s just not very tasty. Our main course was a battered fish with curry, and the curry was very very basic; we expected more sophistication. Service was friendly and efficient, and the room was busy and had a good vibe. We wouldn t choose to go back, though, given the lacklustre nature of some of the food.
The food here are super delicious and staffs are friendly.
Excellent dinner! Thanks Stage Wine Bar Vegetarian options: The burrata pear salad with honeycomb was delicious. The recommended wine pairings were spot on. Food : 5/5 |
Great but too pricey for my pocketbook.
Our server took the time to explain the menu. The music was loud and we had to talk over it (loudly). I wouldve preferred less upbeat music such as jazz. . More jazz/more chill music. I found the price of food was was very expensive. On a side note... The bread very good.
Great atmosphere and food is pretty good but just not good enough for the price. Small portions and just too expensive. Menu is limited and zero descriptions so unless your more cultured than me youre Googling. Wine options by the glass are very limited and the Wine menu font is small and very difficult to read.
My experience at this wine bar was absolutely outstanding, and I owe a huge thank you to Claire, our server, for making it truly unforgettable. From her extensive knowledge of the wine selection to her impeccable service, Claire ensured that our evening was nothing short of exceptional. And lets not forget about the bread & butter - it was absolutely divine! It was the perfect accompaniment to our wine selection and added an extra layer of enjoyment to our experience. Overall, I cant recommend this wine bar enough. With its incredible service, inviting ambiance, and delicious bread, its a hidden gem that deserves all the praise. I cant wait to come back and explore more of their offerings. Cheers to Claire and the entire team for a truly wonderful evening!
Very good!
Been here 3 times so far, all 3 have been fantastic. Most recently came with my parents, tri tip tartar was so good we ordered 2, trout Amandine was delicious and rich, and we couldnt stop eating their house-made focaccia. We also ordered the bbq scallops, citrus salad, comte noodles and burratta. Will be back again for sure, wished wed ordered the butternut smash soft serve but we were simply too full!
This was my first visit to Stage and we loved the experience. The adherence to local food is a definite attraction for us and you hit it out of the park across all dishes we tried. With such an expansive wine list, its unfortunate the same local focus isnt reflected among the vintages. But that wouldnt stop us from returning again. Loved it.
This is the best restaurant in Victoria.
I had the deep fried cod curry. It was a big piece of cod and the deep fry was tasty, but it didnt taste like curry and no vegetables. My wife had Trout Almondine. A slab of trout with Almonds on top and a tasty sauce no vegetables. Olives and bread appetizer was pricey, nothing special. Atmosphere was loud (Saturday night). I didnt think the loud music was necessary except that it prevents you hearing other peoples conversations as one is packed in like sardines.
Always such a great time coming to Stage. Our favourite place in Victoria for good reason: from wine selection to service to food.
Had a girls night at Stage recently. We ordered nearly everything on the menu and enjoyed it all. I think we raved about the pasta dish the most! Great service, amazing food. Will be back!
While the food itself is amazing, the experience otherwise is off-putting. The bartender was friendly and welcoming, but our server wasnt very helpful when we asked about the cocktails, specifically when we asked what was in a Brooklyn and was told its like a Manhatten without elaborating on the ingredients, and made us feel as though we were expected to know already, despite the lack of ingredients listed on the cocktail menu. The menus font is also difficult to read, especially with how small it is and how dim the lighting inside is. Also, each time Ive gone in the music is always incredibly loud to the point where I struggle to hear the person sitting next to and/or across from me. Its good for a drink and a snack, but spending too long in here is tiring.
They have the best Tiramisu in town!
Good spot to have good wine and good food. They are updating their menu on regular basis and overall food experience is good (not exceptional, but good quality). Good selection of local beers and wine. Excellent service
Love this place..feel like Im in Europe..the home made vermouth is excellent..the bites are sublime
The food was amazing, but the service was only ok. Also loved the vibe except the music was a bit loud making it hard to talk.
We were unfortunately disappointed with the food. To be honest, it was downright embarrassing. We waited for more than 40 minutes only to leave completely hungry after this so-called meal . We visited this place with our friends, a group of four. We tried almost everything on the menu. Starting with the appetizers, out of the five options, the tastiest were the cheese and olives. The various types of prosciutto were disgusting. I ordered scallops for dinner and ended up with just two scallops covered with lettuce and chorizo, accompanied by some small potatoes masquerading as scallops (as if I wouldn t know the difference! ). It was a huge letdown, especially considering the high prices and the over 40-minute wait. According to my friends reviews, the other dishes weren t great either. We left hungry.
Really fantastic little place, like we havent seen since living in a big city. Great atmosphere, service, food and wine. Will definitely come back.
Such an amazing place to explore new wines and dishes in an intimate space. Ive found incredible new wines here and like to order dishes Im unfamiliar/hesitant with (Who would have thought beef tongue and chicken hearts could be so delicious?!) The cheese portions are so big it seems crazy that theyre able to make a profit on them. The only reason its not 5 stars is I find the bread to be really dry and almost inedible. Maybe it was a fluke but it seriously stood out as being so bad which is disappointing from a French restaurant.
Cocktails (three ordered) were very underwhelming and should have been sent back. Four tapas, three in very rich sauces were delicious in the beginning and middle but by the end they were just too much. For a $180 for two it was not worth the price. Service was good, The atmosphere was nice and festive but intimate, our reason for going besides looking for great food and cocktails. To avoid burping up rich sauce during a Belfry play we will do the Fernwood Inn or something downtown next time.
Absolutely, viciously gorgeous in every way. Every aspect delivers. Get involved.
Amazing food, amazing service. Always a joy to visit!
The experience was wonderful, the food was delicious but some dishes were very salty.
I absolutely love this place. Took my beautiful bride here for Valentines dinner. Fois Gras on steak!? How can you go wrong. Delicious food, very cool atmosphere, killer cocktails and great service make this a must visit in Victoria.
Coming back to this restaurant after a great first impression last trip. The food is so delicious here and the smell of the charred bread is divine. Our server, Anna, is so great! Love all her suggestions for food in both Victoria and Vancouver. She is also just super friendly to chat with. Lovely vibe as the evening progressed and had more people come in.
This could have been a 4.5 star review but it isnt. Two of us went to try the feast at the Stage early on a Friday evening. The concept is great, essentially offering diners a 4 course meal at the discretion of the chef. Theres definitely talent in the kitchen. Scrumptious bread served with the first course which included two lovely cheeses and marinated olives. The cheeses were right out of the fridge and a little too cold to be at their best. Second course was cured meats and crudites and the crudites were the course highlight served super fresh and lightly dressed with a buttermilk herb dressing on the side. Third course was halibut cooked to perfection with leeks and a cream sauce with salmon caviar and a superb French salade verte. Final course was chocolate cake which was not very interesting. So, the food is very good. Unfortunately, the music is a disaster. The room was too loud to allow for dinner conversation comfortably ( I could feel my chair vibrate from the bass at times) and turned what might have been a marvellous evening out, into a big disappointment. I could hardly wait to finish ang get out. I asked our server about turning it down or a change of pace from pseudo rap only to be told that it would actually be turned louder shortly. We arrived at 6 for dinner. I wont be back and cant recommend it for dinner despite the quality of the food.
Very good experience but since it was my first time there and we only got tapas to share. I dont want to give full 5 stars yet until Ive tried their actual meals. Overall very cool place.
I only rate it with 3 stars because the menu was not to my taste, I didnt find anything French in there, (and yet I am) I ended up with cheese and bread. I found it very expensive and for the quantity served. The wine was good but not exceptional and the glass was 17 dollars...... My friends were happy with their dish (plates of clams with bacon), although it was still expensive for the quantity. However, the waiters were exceptional and the atmosphere and decoration of the restaurant were very nice.
Incredible place to eat. Go with an open mind, buy a bottle of wine and feel better about your dumb little life. 10/10 would tell my friends to ensure they know Im better than them. Bread slapped.
This is the most disappointing meal we have ever had on this island, we came to this restaurant with high expectations, the vibe of the restaurant is pretty good, it the food is incomprehensible, we ordered feast set meal for 5 people, because the server said this is chefs choice, if we are very hungry, we can try it. First, we got three pieces of burned bread and two kinds of cheese, and canned clams. The second dish was a plate of vegetable salad :)The third dish was a plate with two pieces of halibut, which tasted fine. When the fourth course two chocolate cake was served, we were shocked, paying $325 and getting this, After such an experience, we talked with server, he said about the price of the ingredients because of inflation, of course we know that everything is going up in price, but paying $325 for such 4 courses meal is unreasonable, I believe if we order all the food on the menu, it will not exceed this price. In the end, our discussion did not have any results. The server dropped a machine with amount and said if you don t wanna pay the tips, that s is fine. Horrible night.
Just felt funny when people thought they are so superior. We came with an open mind to be honest, would want to explore some French cuisines. One friend of us went to France last summer so he wanted to try some French cuisines in Victoria. The food we got served turned out to be innovative and good? Couple breads that were usually served as appetizers (in many restaurants), fresh veggies from 30 miles away? four pieces of local fish filets, and two no taste superior chocolate cakes. $65 per person was nothing, but just felt funny when people kept talking about discount and tips free . Services were good, we can come back and do 25% 30% tips if that was what you wanted. We don t really mind and care to contribute and support this lovely restaurant . Hope everyone enjoy Stage, come checkout some fantastic and superior services and treatments. BON APPETIT!
We made a reservation to eat early enough to get our seats at the Belfry. I have never seen a menu like the one I saw tonight. Each item was one word like leeks . So the server had to recite a long rigmarole for each one. By the time it came to choose our order there was a confusion of different memories of what we heard. I knew I could not eat anything spicy so I asked for tuna without any spices. I was told firmly that no changes to any item were acceptable. So we left.
BEST CHEESEBURGER IN THE WORLD
Its good.
Dinner and drinks at Stage are always a unique experience. The menu, both drinks and food, are an opportunity for the diner to suspend belief and opinion, placing their experience in the hands of the chef and dedicated service staff. As always, we selected our top choices from the food menu and selected our first cocktail. Everything else was a catered experience, perfectly pairing our glasses of wine with the courses of food, which were thoughtfully timed and brought out in perfect pairs. We always enjoy our experience at our favourite neighbourhood haunt, and today was no different. Not one to leave a regular Google review, but this stop deserves to be on every local foodie s must hit list. Thrilled to have chef Mathew Finn back. Can t wait for many more excellent dining experiences. Cheers the entire crew for their dedication and amazing recommendations.
The food and drinks were original and delicious (learned about Tonka bean tonight). We did the chef s choice menu and wow. The best tuna tataki I ve ever had and the house made vermouth that went with it was stellar. What a gem. Will be regulars here from now on !
We really enjoyed our dinner here and also top it with great glasses of wine. We picked chef choice dish. It turned out fantastic. Server super friendly. Parking was okay. A bit walking but best after dinner. Too much good food we needed to walk it off back to our car. We would definitely visit again in the future.
Sunday family meal is the best! Highly recommend
I ve been seeing some recent, weird reviews of this place (my favourite place in yyj to go for food quality, wine list, cocktails, variety (!) & late night vibes) so I m editing my original review into a series of Haikus to underline the type of person who could even consider leaving Stage a one star review. If you identify with these haikus, I suggest you google Browns Social House and not waste your time on this gem. One word menu prints Describes food but I don t get Why not a novel? I ate here last week And they already changed food This is not the norm! World Wines by the glass, But I just really want a Bland Californian Sure the food is good I want 2019 price Why is that so bad? Late night burgers yum Why is late night not after 7 pm, huh? Ambiance in tunes Too loud! no one should have fun! I ll write bad review Fin.
Visited again for the 3 course feast/chefs special (now called menu du jour) and it was incredibly mediocre. My previous visit, the waiter asked us for our preferences and catered the meal to our tastes. On Saturday, I told the waiter that I dont eat pork. 2 of the 4 items in the first course? Pigs face and cotechino (or some other variety of pork sausage). The other 2 items were bread/cheese and crudite. I told the server, I dont eat pork and he said great, avoid those 2 items. Ok?? Why pay for something I dont eat when there are non-pork items on the menu and everyone else on the table was happy to not have pork? For $70/person (not including drinks etc), I expected better. Response to the owner: None of this was explained by the waiter. If the menu is set, your waiter should have said so and I would happily ordered non-pork items à la carte. Clearly your staff need better training, not excuses.
Stage is good folks! Doesnt try to be everything for everybody, instead it does its own lively, tasty, cute thing.
I had an unreal experience here, 1st time visiting Victoria and Stage did not disappoint. The food is everything I love in a great meal, simple quality ingredients properly executed, no smoke and mirrors. Great hospitality from the two servers on that night, both of them busy but I never felt like I wasnt taken care of. I cannot wait to visit again, this is the kind of place I would like to see more of in the restaurant scene. Hats off to Stage
Love how they changed the menu everyday Kid-friendliness: My kids favorite is the chicken breast. Not always here but worth to try Food : 5/5 |
Terrific food, amazing service, really nice ambiance. Great menu options. The bartender is very knowledgeable too, and offers lots of nice vermouth and absinthe cocktails. Highly recommend for a sophisticated night out!
Fun atmosphere, excellent food, excellent service. The menu was described to us (headlines explained) so we could make great choices. Very kind server answered all of our questions. We had a great experience!
Stylish atmosphere and friendly waitstaff. Food was alright, but not remarkable and certainly not in line with the high prices.
The perfect way to end a beautiful day in Victoria. The food was delicious, the staff was lovely and the music was perfect
Really great place for food and wine!!
Great food, fantastic service, interesting wine. Highly recommended!
Great wine experience. I was drinking reds. Food was amazing and the service was top notch.
Fantastic restaurant serving amazing food and very well presented too. Staff very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Great range of drinks and soft drinks. Highly recommend to all.
Amazing food, great choice of interesting wines and knowledgeable and welcoming staff. AND best value for money in Canada
This restaurant is an absolute gem, a little bit off the beaten path, but well worth the trek. Excellent food, great service, wonderful atmosphere.
Absolutely stellar evening of food. Great care taken that my wife is Celiac, and that she could eat specific things safely. Insanely good crudo, best fried rockfish I have ever had with Japanese green curry. Beautiful chicken. Seasonal tomatoes. Granita with fresh peaches and apples with crema and celery green syrup. Genius. Wine values are exceptional with highly pedigreed and curated wine choices. Solid cocktails. A Northern Sicilian liter of red wine was light bodied and perfect. Team floor making sure we were taken care of. Our friends visiting from out of town were also equivalently happy. Highly Recommended.
Id give the food, service, atmosphere 5 stars but for me personally only 3 )its okay). Definitely more of an expensive place than Im used to. Neat concept. Menu changes frequently to the point you dont know whats there every couple weeks. Food was expertly prepared. But for me it was a little too upscale and too expensive. I can see foodies loving the place and while I enjoy food, Im more about the atmosphere and the experience. You sort of have to expect spending a fair bit here. Everything is a la carte. The focaccia was GREAT (had some in Victoria that was almost like pound cake ) - this was crusty and light! But it was about 10 bucks for a couple slices. When you need a couple orders of break because the plates are bare, and you need multiple people to order different things... Just not my preference. Although it was a unique experience and I can see it being very popular with a certain upscale crowd.
Such a fabulous little restaurant with an amazing food/wine menu...tops in Victoria
Fun place with great food and atmosphere, just a bit expensive
This is cute little restaurant that upon arriving had all the makings of being a great food experience. The service was top notch and the wines they recommended were great. The food however had all the components for being really good, but didn t quite make it. We did the chefs tasting menu and it started of with cheese, charcuteries and slow cooked pigs head. All the components from this starter that were really good, weren t made in house which is unfortunate. The ranch dip was amazing, but the pigs head literally had no seasoning or flavour. Since it had an XO sauce, it should ve been bursting with flavour. Our main was the roasted chicken. Again there was absolutely no seasoning and since they did a honey marinade on the outside of the chicken it made the skin taste burnt and bitter after cooking. No flavours penetrated the actual chicken itself. The only flavour was in the skin. The dessert was a mint chocolate cake, which was fine but didn t wow or beg us to come back for more. Overall we didn t leave unhappy, but we do wish the food had hit its mark. With some tweaks I believe it can!
Food wasnt great, small portions. poor presentation (look at the shrimp cocktail in the bowl) lol. Not much taste and WAY overpriced. A slice of bread $7 ... come on ; 5 olives $9... Can NOT recommend this place, was here years ago and just confirmed by experience - unless you are coming in for the atmosphere...
Loved the vibe. I heard of this place from a friend. And it was close to the Belfry theatre, which I was going to. So I suggested Stage and was very impressed. My friend said the menu was pretentious, but I thought it was very fun and exciting to explore the options. Im excited to go back and try the other things.
Sebastian is the man. Great food, beautiful vibe and service that is at another level. Thanks for sharing your passion and making us feel special. Food
Once again an amazing dinner. I don t go often - maybe three times a year at most. It s a go-to special occasion dinner and every time the food, drinks, staff and ambiance is wonderful. Part of the treat is seeing how a two word menu item comes out as a masterfully prepared dish. Don t miss the cheese, cured meats, amazing veggies and meats - and get some of the house liquors.
Love the ambience, staff are friendly and superb, West makes the best drink .
Frequent menu changes and always delicious wine + cocktails! Great service and an amazing atmosphere, a must in Victoria.
Hate to say it I won t be back. Food was small, lousy and much too expensive for what it was. I sure don t mind paying if it s worth it but was weak at best. Poor wine selection for a wine bar. Service was worse at the bar. Bartender poured different wines into same glass. Had to request a clean glass. Trend is over. Not even close to what Stage was sadly.
Stage effortlessly combines elevated nose to tail cuisine with the comfort of your neighbourhood watering hole. Their selection of wine varies from natural to traditional and the staff have spectacular knowledge of such. Whether I m headed there for a solo bite and glass of wine, or a gathering with friends, plenty of food and drink, Stage leaves my belly and heart full.
Had been trying to get here for over a year, coming from Vancouver, and was worth the wait. Would definitely dine here on a regular basis if I lived in Victoria. The space is romantic, sophisticated with exposed brick. My only complaint was that the wines by the glass were not listed on the menu, and when we asked the server what they had by the glass she just stated the varietals nothing about the winemakers or wines themselves. I had to request to see the bottles. Strange for a wine bar, right? Vegetarian options: Burrata, and often veggie pasta options.
Incredible dining experience! The staff demonstrated extraordinary service we will be back!! Thank you Anna!!!
Check the menu before you go. The choices didnt suit my appetite,
Food tasted great and server was kind and exceptionally professional.
The food is always delicious, beautiful and fresh. I love that the menu always changes. While they dont offer a cocktail menu, the bartender makes delicious cocktails upon request. I also love the décore, cosy atmosphere and dimed mood lighting. Dietary restrictions: So many great options that are GF, by omitting the bread
Great food and tasty wine. Noise from music and other patrons was too loud to be able to distinguish a conversation with my guests at the table, let alone hear the waiter. Comes with the nature of a tightly seated space in a main common room so is what it is. Very impressive quality of food from the small kitchen and limited cooks they have.
Ambience, quality of the food was great (5/5) but the structure of the menu was next to impossible to decipher and was misleading. The prices were outrageous for Victoria and for the type of food. Be prepared to spend about $50-60 (or more) for your small main course with sides. This doesn t include anything else. We d love to go back but we likely won t go back again because of the cost.
The waiter was extremely condescending to my partner because they didnt know enough about wine to order without a menu. The music was really profane rap (great in other contexts!) at a volume that made conversation impossible. Some grounding might be good.
Great music and fun busy vibe!
An amazing experience. The food was amazing so was the atmosphere and the drinks! Seriously cool place: ) service was great too! Very mysterious and marvellous!
Very unique selection of food. Good ambience and service. Main dishes are great but I d avoid the cheaper/smaller dishes like miniature pickles and chips since they are not filling or very interesting.
Love it!
Jesus wept.
I m rating Stage for its dining experience, not its wine bar experience, although I realize a large part of its clientele come for the wines, which are excellent. Stage s chef is creative and skilled, and I recommend trying out several dishes, which are not small, but not quite meals. We had the zucchini plate, the eggplant, and the lamb belly. Each was unique and very tasty. The zucchini was the best: it was charred and served in a light tomato sauce with goat cheese and a bit of crumbled andouille sausage. The eggplant was also very good, perfectly cooked and served on a delightful, very green gremolata sauce (parsley, lemon, garlic) with pickled mushrooms (somewhat too strong) and breadcrumbs. The lamb belly was cooked sous vide and had a sweetish white bean sauce with rhubarb. While we didn t quite love the sauce, it worked well with the salty and fatty lamb belly. Dessert of strawberries and cream was tasty, but we craved a finale as unusual as the dinner plates. Our server was excellent, although very busy. She knew all the details of the dishes and the wine list, and this proved important. One annoyance of the experience was that the food menu is so minimalist as to be a cipher. Ingredients and preparation for the six or seven plates are not presented on the menu, so the server had to describe each dish in detail (she had them memorized, but we were left trying to remember what each one had in it). This makes the dining experience more personal, I guess, but also more difficult. Wines by the glass are also not listed on the menu (nor are house cocktail ingredients), but they are very good. Outdoor patio chairs are not particularly comfortable, although we liked the heat lamps. We recommend a lighted blackboard for outside (not sure whether there is one inside) that lists ingredients and wines by the glass. Overall, this was a very enjoyable, creative, and sophisticated dining experience that was also a bit quirky.
The food was mediocre at best and very overpriced ($10 for just greens, $20 for tomatoes with blue cheese). The asparagus came with potato aioli which was indistinguishable from potato salad. The tables are super packed together and it s very loud, so you have no choice but to listen to the vapid date conversation sitting 6 inches from you.
Ive been going to Stage for years and never been disappointed. Food is absolutely delicious, and atmosphere is perfect for a dinner with friends or a date. I love that the menu changes and youre in the hands of the Chef - always tasty and better sustainability for food waste and purchasing.
Great food, great wine, and great service!
Stunning food and excellent service!
Super fun evening, yummy food and wine!
Chill atmosphere. Service was on point. Dinner was great.
The Feast and a bottle of Malbec for our anniversary
I went here on a second date and a seventh date and we both had alot of fun each time. Good food, good drink, perfect atmosphere. Vegetarian options: They have veg options and theyre tasty.
Its good.
Maddy, our waitress, was lovely and all the good things. The food was amazing and incredibly unique but also very rustic and beautifully simple. I had an amazing time.
The menu is ridiculously pretentious, you have to ask for an explanation for everything since it s all just one word like: cheese bread tomatoes Thankfully, the food is on point and worth coming back for.
Been here before, better menu and better service. Will consider other places before coming back.
Coolest place I ve been in a long time. Wine is perfectly fine, food good and the vibe immaculate. Just being here it s special, worth experiencing
Amazing food, cozy ambiance, best staff and a great view of the kitchen! Cheese, bread and olives were an amazing starter, even lovelier, pairing it with their version of a white Negroni. For mains we almost go with the chefs feast, in the end we had the poblanos, mushroom risotto , and the pithivier. Didnt have room for dessert.. Really enjoyed every second at Stage! Note: Getting a taxi in the end was an issue and after half an hour of waiting we just decided to walk back downtown.
Went here for a birthday dinner. We aren t the easiest group of people to accommodate but the staff were absolutely just the most amazing. They had in depth knowledge about the extensive and ever rotating wine list and were super helpful when picking bottles. The food is arguably the best in Victoria. Atmosphere, service, food 10/10, slayed.
Fantastic, friendly service & a creative, fresh rotating menu - all in a gorgeous cosy setting. Portions were large & the chefs choice menu is awesome value for money. Dont let the few weird bad reviews sway you. Theyre a bunch of grumpy sods who probably didnt even dine at the same restaurant that the rest of us did! We were blown away by our recent dinner experience & will be returning again + again. Definitely make a reso in advance as theyre popular!
Delicious food and the wine is amazing. Such a great place to go for a fun night out. The owner was serving and we had a chat, such a fun person and made us feel super welcome.
