All Perfect!

We had lunch here ordering fresh uni, unagi teriyaki, toro oshi (pressed sushi) with real wasabi. The real wasabi is great to eat by itself and if you never tried try it. The uni was ultra fresh and tasty. You don t need the wasabi with the fresh uni imho. For the unagi it was served on a bed of nice noodles and veggies with a great home teriyaki sauce that work well. The pressed sushi was very tasty and I enjoyed it with the wasabi. Service was great and attentive. I would repeat the next time I visit from Toronto.

Our first time dining at this excellent restaurant. We were greeted right away, seated very quickly, received excellent service from Isabella & Andy, and the food was delicious.

Visiting from out of town and I really wanted fresh sashimi and oysters. We also ordered salmon tempura roll and deep fried gyozas from the happy hour menu, which was a nice surprise. The fresh oysters with ponzu sauce were flavourful! Salmon sashimi melted in your mouth. Everything was absolutely amazing. The flavours and toppings on the sushi roll and oysters were delicious as well. Ambiance was very nice. Chill music and beautiful decor and lighting. Luckily, it wasn t busy. Very nice first experience. Andy was friendly and knowledgeable. Will be back!

Best sushi I have had on the island, fresh, beautifully plated and wonderful service. The inside of the restaurant is also gorgeous. It is a must stop! Dietary restrictions: Have several gluten free options!

It was not my first time dining here, but I often return for dishes that are rarely found in the area. The food was fresh and delicious, especially the uni sashimi. A special shout-out to our server, Andy, who was very friendly and ensured everything was perfect. The prices were reasonable for the quality of the food. My friends and I were delighted to receive complimentary tempura ice cream desserts, which added an extra special touch to our experience.

My family had a wonderful dining experience at Uni. The wait staff were incredibly kind and attentive, which made the experience even more special. Mary and Andy were particularly outstanding they both spoke Mandarin, which was a lovely touch, and Andy even spoke Shanghainese, my parents mother tongue/dialect, making us feel right at home. The food was absolutely delicious each dish was flavorful and well-prepared. As a sweet surprise, we were treated to a complimentary dessert, which was a lovely gesture. Overall, the combination of excellent service, great food, and thoughtful touches made this a memorable visit. Highly recommend!

Great Japanese food, favorite To Toro and Dancing Scallop rolls. There is also the plump grilled eel that is addictive. Andy introduced us that the Japanese beer was also delicious. Thanks to our waiter Mary for taking good care of us. I like her Christmas headdress, it is very cute.

Fish was not fresh

I stopped in for a quick Nigiri & Sake meal, 45 min. before having to walk back to a ferry. The staff was very pleasant, the nigiri was great, and their sake menu was plentiful. Thanks for a quick 5 star experience. Cheers!

Had a reservation for 14 people (including 3 children). The staff is amazing! Super friendly and helpful. Food was delicious and came out promptly, especially for a such a large group. We brought a large cake and the staff was so great in bringing it out and everyone sang happy birthday. They also gave us a free tempura ice cream for the birthday boy. Recommend this restaurant for a large group or if you re just looking for great Japanese food with great service.

Exceeded our expectations by like a mile. Lucky to have our two incredible servers Mary and W; so warm and kept dishing out the ginger upon request cheers! Seats are very comfortable, ambience makes you not to want to leave and the food was to die for. Thank you Uni for the experience. Be right back!

We had a great time last December 14, 2024 at Uni Modern Japanese Restaurant! The food was delicious we had teriyaki rice bowls, wonton soup, takoyaki, crispy calamari and BBQ Triple A that was presented by the chef. The ambiance was lovely, even on a bustling Saturday night. Despite not having a reservation, Andy got us a table. The staff was super friendly and did an amazing job despite the crowd. Highly recommend this restaurant!

The Server was very gentle and affectionate. The prize was obove average, but it looked and tasted like it should cost double the actuall prize. The menue veriaty was incredable and we were even able to choose between normal and very fresh and high quality Wasabi. I will definatly come back here if i got the chance.

Had a really good first experience at Uni. We were attended by Koto and Andy. Everything from food to service was amazing. They are such happy people :). We are vegetarians and came in looking for a Ramen. We tried that and a Mango/avacado oshi, which was so good. Definitely recommend, cheers!

Had dinner at this restaurant yesterday. A real cozy place. Food quality and service are incredible. Wenny & Andy provided amazing customer experience.

Honestly, this is the best sushi in town. The unfortunate thing is that they are located on the corner of an absolute tourist trap which cheapens the brand significantly. But don t let that fool you! They also own Toro BarBar which is almost always booked for resos at night and it is for a damn good reason. If you know what good sushi is, you will appreciate Uni and Toro and don t listen to the negative reviews - they don t know what they re talking about.

You really need to try this restaurant. Our first visit and it was a good experience. Our server Andy made sure to let us know about the fresh uni they had. Made sure we were aware it was still happy hour when we arrived. He was very pleasant and friendly. Andy sat us on the upper level took our drink order while we perused the menu. I ordered the Vancouver Island beer they had on offer and started with the deep fried gyoza. On our table we had, salmon oshi, amazing spider roll, beef Angus (aburi) and tuna sashimi Everything was simply devine, the sashimi was so fresh it melted in your mouth. All of our rolls and oshi was prepared excellent and the flavours spot on, very beautifully presented. Its a nicely decorated place, warm and inviting. The staff are all professional and personable. Andy made sure we had everything we needed. Price point is around 40.00 per person with food and drinks We will be back

Really fantastic, unique atmospheres - had the foie gras aburi, gyu tongue, smoked diablo, and spicy seafood udon with my mom. Fantastic service under the team of waitresses and Andy s management, there are a range of cheaper and more expensive items to suit everyone. I really don t think there is a restaurant I ve visited in Victoria that can be replaced by my experience here; I look forward to the next time.

Kid-friendliness: My picky son who usually only eats California rolls enjoyed the chicken karaage, edamame, and the miso soup!

I dont know if we came on a day where they were short staffed or something but the service wasnt as good as the other reviews said, my fiancé and nephew had spicy food but the waitress didnt come by to refill water until we were ready to leave. We didnt really see her much. The decor is great and very nicely curated, it was a clean establishment as well. I do, however, think the TVs and paper napkins felt disjointed from the high prices of the food. Personally, we have had better tasting Japanese fusion cuisine for less money in Victoria but it could just be our tastes or perhaps we didnt order things that were stand-out items.

Sushi was super fresh and really tasty. Sashimi was melt in your mouth.

Visiting Victoria from San Diego OMG! The Oshi Sushi is absolutely amazing! A must have! Andy is awesome! He will make sure you are taken care of! So recommend Uni! Definitely hit this spot up if you love good sushi!

Hidden gem.

We dropped in on the Black Friday evening and were absolutely delighted to do so. Food was great and the server, Koto Hirotsuru, was an absolute gem and made our experience at the restaurant all the much better. We look forward to coming back and bringing family and friends. Domo!

To say I was looking forward to eating here would be an understatement. But so disappointed in the lead-up to eating here and how they manage reservations. :( I even read all the reviews and planned in advance what wed order in advance as it was a very special occasion honoring a major life milestone: Multiple starters (the sweet BBQ octopus sounds DEVINE!), BC uni sashimi, blue-fin o-toro with caviar, flaming unagi (my partner has never tried barbecued eels before) and OF COURSE: the wagyu and the Diamond Omakase. Ive heard amazing things about this place and was so excited to share what real, fresh, authentic sushi is like to my Canadian partner. Made reservations on November 20th for 4pm. Got written confirmation of reservations on November 22nd. Then got a message on the day of our reservation (today) at 12:07pm via email saying: we have a spacial [sic] event at 5:45. So we will try to make all your food AFAP, also make sure you have a good time here, Thanks. That sounded okay. Would prefer not to be rushed but TOTALLY understand. Got into the car and missed a call at 3:26pm (we were already on our way so I couldnt answer) saying: Unfortunately were hosting a banquet tonight so we are canceling you reservation. If you head to our sister restaurant and wait outside theyll take you. Once we got downtown and heard the voicemail, we called the number on the restaurants website multiple times to receive a no one is answering and theres no voicemail message. I was willing to get seated earlier if possible. Went to the sister restaurant and they werent open. Tried to make an online reservation with the sister restaurant and they had nothing available until late in the evening. All in all, a fail. Most other fine dining establishments downtown Vic were already booked full for the evening. Ended up driving out to Sooke to Wild Mountain to make up for it...really want to try this place, but curious if the food quality is on par with the reservation protocol (hopefully not).

I just happened upon this place when I was having a walk , I m not from Victoria and actually live in Asia half the year , been to japan many times and know what real Japanese food is supposed to be like. Japanese owned is very crucial , which it is , menu is exceptional , they also have Orion beer from Okinawa which is rare , I was brought back to Tokyo when I was here , super authentic and delicious. This place is a must try if you want to experience real japan.

The food was good, but we were highly disappointed by the lack of service (and water) we received, so we are not inclined to return, nor do we recommend this place. We spent the entire dinner feeling really thirsty because we never saw our waitress. Given how much we spent, the price of the menu items, and the atmosphere of this place, we were expecting more attentive service. We got seated immediately, but it took about 15 minutes before our waitress acknowledged us. Usually, at restaurants, drink orders are taken before food orders, but since we had been waiting for some time, we went ahead and ordered our food and drinks at the same time. Food came out at a reasonable time, but then our waitress ignored us the entire evening. She never stopped by to ask how the food was or to see if we needed water refills. We were so thirsty during dinner because we couldnt get more water. We were seated in the back corner near the Uni sign. I would periodically see our waitress off in the distance by the bar and kitchen, but she never checked up on any of her tables. There was one other table beside us, but she also ignored them the entire evening. After we finished our drinks, water, and food, we sat waiting for a good 20 minutes before I got up to try and get the attention of one of the other waitresses to ask for the bill and more water because I had no idea where our waitress was. Our waitress came out with the bill. No questions about how everything was. We paid, and I politely asked for more water. She returned with the water jug, put it on our table for us to fill our own cups, and left without saying a word. She left before we could even thank her. Lastly, the seating in the back corner is weird. The table felt too high if you were sitting on the booth seat against the wall, but then the table felt too low if you sat on the high chair.

Sushi was so fresh tasting and full of flavour. The gyoza was delicious as well. One of the spicy rolls we got didn t taste very spicy but still good. We also ordered the higher quality wasabi based off the servers recommendation, but it seemed not very hot and didn t taste any different lol. Friendly servers, drinks were yummy, overall impressed can t wait to go back and try some other dishes & rolls. Also the menu is quite big, lots to choose from!

It was my first time eating at Uni for dinner this evening & it was quite the pleasant surprise that will make me come back again & might make you want to stop by to check out their menu :) I had the pleasure of being promptly greeted & served by Andy (Restaurant Manager), who promptly took my order after stepping into the clean lines with a modern vibe of this gem of a restaurant located at the corner of Wharf & Yates. Shortly after being seated, the food came out much sooner than I was expecting (A+, keep reading, you ll see why!) A huge fan of oysters, I ve tried them all around the city, finding that, while few restaurants offer Japanese oysters, they weren t served the way that Uni serves them with their flavourful mouthwatering garnish & presented so visually eloquent that I wish I had *doubled* my order & savoured them at half the speed since they were THAT good! My first foray into trying Kusshi oysters started at Marilena, the fine dining restaurant just down the street & even Uni knocked their version of the Kusshi oyster out of the park! These mouth watering morsels were followed by an order of the Salmon Oshi, which is my favourite type of sushi *when it s done right*. Other places around town either have too much rice on top & bottom with minimal filling & minute spicy mayo Uni? Nope. It was perfectly proportioned rice through & through, married to an equally proportionate filling & dressed with a blanket of spicy mayo that will make you clap as you chew! I ll definitely be returning to Uni in the near future for their oysters & Salmon Oshi with the hopes of trying out other hidden treasures on their menu! With a glimpse of the Harbour & Wharf St Bridge, filled with staff dedicated to offering decadent Japanese cuisine at great prices, you ll sure leave satiated & planning your next visit! If you haven t tried Salmon Oshi or Kusshi oysters before, you re going to want to stop by Uni if you want them both done right! It s Uni for the win!!!

It was great! Andy, the manager, was super nice and friendly. The food is amazing and the menus are very well done. Surpassingly, the prices are low, food quality high and it wasn t very full. We didnt have a reservation but the host got us a great seat in literally 5 minutes. What a fantastic experience from our super sweet and funloving server to the incredibly creative and delicious sushi. I would go here everyday just to try each roll. They had only been open for a couple of weeks and were completely full so I definitely recommend reservations. Parking: Parking lot is less than a block away and is free after 8pm

We tried recommended sushi rolls from our server , and each one was a unique blend of flavours that just melted in our mouths. The presentation was beautiful, almost too pretty to eat! The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. Definitely recommend trying their pressed sushi rolls! So yummy! Takoyaki - they are tiny pieces, really tiny. But flavor is unquestionable Ika karage - not crispy. Sashimi otoro - 4 pieces for $36. Quite over price if you ask me. Still delicious Dynamite roll- really good. Would come back again Shout out Andy

After eyeing Uni s menu online for quite sometime, I finally went there for lunch and it was such a wonderful experience! I had Yuzu Hamachi, Oysters, Lobster Motoyaki, Foi Gras and Wagyu Nigiri and all these items were so delicious! Also, Uni is the only place in the entire city of Victoria, where you can find foi gras. Both female team members, who were taking care of my order, were very attentive and overall service was a top notch! Certainly will be back for more!

Excellent meal and great location. Must haves: yuzu g&t, edaname (add spice), Bao Bao Bao, and tuna nigiri (add spice). We will definitely come back next time we are in Victoria to try more.
