Middle Eastern & Yemeni Cuisine
Mashallah is one of the best tastes in Ontario, not in GTA. Ontario is the best mandi ever as we used to have in Arab land. The owner Abu bakar is a very friendly and very welcoming person thanks. We will keep coming back & again. We enjoyed our dinner. Yummy mandi lamb 😋 and chicken.
Amazing taste and unique menu options. I wish we got a bit more lamb for the BBQ lamb we ordered but aside from that critique, the food was phenomenal.
We have visited On Coal more than 7 times in the last year for large gatherings (8 adults and 6 kids). The double mix platter of lamb and chicken are consistently delicious and done so well. The rice are so flavourful. We enjoy it every time and the guests we host love it as well. The team is friendly and always serve us so well. Love the prayer area as well.
The best mandi I've ever tasted in Canada! I've tried various places in Kitchener and Scarborough, but this one is truly the best. Their shawai mandi is exceptional, and the regular mandi is also incredibly flavorful and delicious. Plus, the prices are very reasonable, with dishes costing just $12. The service is great, the place is clean, and there's plenty of parking available. Highly recommended!
Best Mandi ever so far in Canada! I ordered half chicken and lamb. Chicken was super crispy on the outside and extremely juicy and tender on the inside. Lamb was melting in mouth. Amazing authentic mandi experience!! 💯recommended!!
First off, "On Coal" offers an exceptional array of authentic Yemeni dishes, including kabsa, grilled chicken, and mandi, earning it a five-star rating for the food alone. The Arabic decor and traditional seating are incredibly appealing and provide a rich cultural dining experience. The quality of the food is a rare find in Canada, making this restaurant stand out as a newly discovered gem.Serving traditional foods with such high quality in an inviting environment is an accomplishment worthy of praise. I highly recommend "On Coal" to anyone looking for an authentic Yemeni dining experience
Had a fantastic meal at Oncal Halal Restaurant in Waterloo. The atmosphere is unique, with traditional seating and a prayer area, adding to the authentic experience. We tried the lamb and chicken mandi - both were tender, flavorful, and served with perfectly seasoned rice. Portions are generous, offering great value. Service was quick and staff were incredibly welcoming. Highly recommend for anyone seeking authentic Middle Eastern cuisine in the area. Just a suggestion to keep the restroom and every clean and make sure to have enough space for hand wash and all.
A few friends and I recently visited on coal through a recommendation I received recently. And WOW what an experience, the interior was so nice and very well themed , they had traditional ground areas to eat, prayer areas, and plenty of tables! Each table had a plastic wrap that you can eat on, super unique (first restaurant I've been to like this). Service was SUPER fast, they finished making our food in less than 15 minutes. We were a group of 5 and ordered the "Double mix lamb and chicken mandi", it was amazing! Lamb and chicken were so tender, and flavorful, and the rice was cooked perfectly and well seasoned, they are so generous with their portions, that we had 2 take out containers full of rice afterwards. We also got 5 cans of pop, and in total it cost us about 20 dollars per person, so much value! Employees were super kind, and were more than happy in providing us extra sauces at no extra charge. I will definitely be coming back here regularly, really excited to try out other dishes they have. This is the perfect place for big groups who like sharing their meals, definitely a Waterloo gem. . Do yourself a favor and visit! Overall review 9/10 Well done!
I came from Ottawa to visit my friend, and they invited me to dinner at this restaurant. Honestly, it was an amazing choice! The food was absolutely delicious and cooked perfectly, with an authentic Mandi flavor. We tried both the chicken and meat, and they were incredible. The portions were very generous and reasonably priced we were six people, and we could barely finish the dish! After dinner, we ordered dessert Masoub and it was spot on, 100% authentic. They also have Adani or Karak tea, and you shouldn t leave without trying it! It s rich with the perfect blend of Karak spices and pairs beautifully with the dessert. I also want to thank the staff for their amazing service so friendly and polite. Special thanks to Abu Baker, who went above and beyond for us. Whatever we needed, he brought it with a big smile. This was truly a memorable experience, and I d highly recommend this place to anyone!
Really good food and a very nice ambience. I d recommend their chicken broast and the lamb muhammar. Their garlic dip tastes fresh and seems homemade.
food was great
Not honest people, always incorrect portions size. At least go get some basic training oh how to behave decently. Washrooms are dirty no paper towels. Every time I go I get different portions sizes and when I ask them they argue. And their beverages choices are funny for a ridiculous price
Very underwhelming food and terrible service. Dry meat, flavorless rice, and terrible quantity for the price. Gave us cups but refused to give us water. Not coming here again.
Lamb is amazing
Horrible service . Poor ambience.
Come to this restaurant if you want to have the best lamb in your life. It is extremely tender, juicy, and does not have the gamey taste that youll find with most other places. The lamb prices are a bit steep, but thats because lamb is fairly expensive. The chicken and rice are very good as well.
Best Shawaya in Town! I had an amazing experience at OnCoal!! The Chicken Shawaya was absolutely delicious the rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked, and the chicken was tender and full of flavor. The portions were generous, and the traditional seating made the whole experience even more authentic. The service was quick and friendly, and the ambiance was cozy and inviting. If you re a fan of shawaya or want to try it for the first time, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended!
I congratulate you on the quality of the food, the rice, God willing, the meat is tender, the food is spicy. Keep it up, and may God grant you success
Food was good but the service was very bad
Got the lamb and chicken mandi. It was super flavorful and fell off the bone.
Mandi is great but the Farouj is too die for. Best halal food option in this region and if you like middle eastern style Broast their fried chicken is good too.
We visited OnCoal Restaurant for dinner and ordered full chicken shawaya for a family of six (2 adults, 4 small kids). The food quality was good, with the chicken being flavorful and well-cooked. However, the masoob was underwhelming due to poor presentation. While the bill was reasonable overall, the portion sizes were insufficient, forcing us to order extra rice. The single-person rice was overpriced at $4.50, giving the impression of upselling. The atmosphere was just average, offering nothing particularly memorable or inviting. The most disappointing aspect of the experience was the service, which was very slow and affected the overall enjoyment of our meal. While the food itself has potential, improvements in portion size, service efficiency, and pricing could significantly enhance the dining experience.
How can you be that cheap I got half chicken shawaya and you send me only 1 sauce is it that expensive for you this food for 2 people should I eat the sauce and the other person just look at me this is very cheap I know arabs aren t cheap I don t know what kinda people you guys are when you selling half chicken or more just give the sauce at least 3 don t be cheap not worth it losing a customer for some cheap sauce when they pay you $30 and more for the order common sense and add rice since day one you guys never have enough rice it is cheaper than the chicken guys just give the people what they pay for the rice never enough I orders over 20 times and the rice never enough and every time I call you guys say will give you more next time and it s never it s actually less than before
I liked their seating arrangements and ambience. However, Customer service is very poor and servers were quiet busy doing their prayers near the dining area while the customers were waiting. Washroom is not at all clean. Not impressed with the Chicken Mandi that I had and i would just give it 2/5 rating for the food. Not going back here again.
First time and the food was really dry i hope they work on this :(
The food is amazing
Great food, lovely people
Great Mandi in Canada
This is my go to place when in Waterloo. The food tastes great, is hot and fresh and never fails to deliver! The lamb mandi and roasted or BBQ chicken are my faves.
Hello Folks, A huge disappointment at my recent visit to Oncoal. My party arrived at the restaurant at 8:57 PM and approached the counter to place our order. The individual at the counter informed us that they were out of chicken and lamb. Okay, we will order something else. Shortly after, another staff member came out from the kitchen and mentioned that they do not take dining orders after 9:30 PM, even though it was only 9:04 PM at the time. I pulled out my phone showed the time and pointed out that the website clearly states the restaurant is open until 10:00 PM on Sundays. Still, they have not taken our order at 9:04 PM. The experience has left me quite frustrated, as I was expecting a different level of service.
One of the best Mandi available in kwc area
One of my favourite places to eat at in Kitchener Waterloo. The lamb mahammar is to die for. Only thing I wish was it came with a salad or had an option to buy a salad on the side or even just a plate of raw onions and hot peppers Maybe there is and I just haven t seen it. But definitely the best meat and rice combo the quality of the meat is incredible. Both the chicken options are also really really delicious
I recently went to this restaurant. I have to say the food is good. However, the service is exceptionally poor. Downright RUDE! I was looking forward to having a meal and possibly becoming a regular customer. The person looked least interested in taking orders and didnt care at all about treating a customer well. I am very disappointed in the service and wont recommend this restaurant even if their food is good.
I give my thank you to Abu Bakr who helped us and gave very good service The atmosphere was very nice and the food tasted astonishing Food : 5/5
Excellent food!
I love their chicken here
Great food... Chicken Mandi
Very tasty food.
This place is a hidden gem for authentic arbi Mandi & desserts! All their menu items are very delicious, however their service is slow. The dining atmosphere is clean, but the washrooms need attention. Parking: It s located at a huge plaza so there s plenty of parking Wheelchair accessibility: There s a wheelchair option available
Worst experience ever. The rudest and the non hygienic service.
Halal food Machallah very delicious Food
Order 2/4 mandi, it was awful. Chicken was okay but rice didn t, doesn t provide mayonnaise with it and quantity also seemed to be less.
They are unhygeinic and rude
They have the best mandi ever
I love the mandi rice, its very tasty. I prefer their chicken mandi.
The food tastes phenomenal. The decor is very rustic but clean. You might need to wait for your food but its worth the wait. The Lamb is very fresh here. My favorite is chicken sawiyah & lamb muhammara.
Truly felt like I was in the Middle East! Amazing food and atmosphere.
I drove from Mississauga for one hour to try this, please. I get it. It was a busy day and they had big catering order in front of us. Delay I understand because of the order that s not a problem, however Mandy meet single portion was a real insult. Small pieces of very little portion of meat. The size of the rice for single is very small though it says 1 to 2 person on the menu however it s not even for one person if moderately hungry. I am in the area. I may try the chicken however I will never drive that far for this place.
The place is tidy and clean, something more luxurious than the other, and the taste is as if you are in Hijaz, God willing, may God bless you in your livelihood, and the Iraqi cashier has taste and the highest morals
The service was on point and the food was delicious
Its the best Yemeni restaurant . I drove 100km from Toronto to try the food. Everything was perfect, grilled chicken, the rice tast, especially the lamp, was so tasty I hardly recommend....... Food : 5/5
Most of the positive reviews posted here are just fake. They just copy and paste the same old replies to each and every reviews. Just imagine the audacity of behaving rude to the customers because they posted a 1 star review. People with ZERO TOLERANCE. Food is bad, overcooked and dry. Zero hygiene ! They keep the trays and utensils near washrooms! (check attached video) A big zero rating if that was available. Highly recommended to stay away.
Absolutely delicious authentic mandi at reasonable prices
This is my third time placing a large food order for a party, and once again it was so delicious! The food is really good and so fresh!!! The staff are really incredible to work with. They are always so gracious and kind. Would 10/10 recommend this place for dining in, and ordering for parties!
Great food and service..
Everything about this place is perfect the food is very tender and delicious it melts in your mouth!! Also costumer service is on point the staff is very nice and friendly good job on coal team!!!
The food was really good and we enjoyed it very much would reccomend to anyone 1000/10
Food is great but the person who was at the front desk was an annoying person who was just not interested in answering us and looked super reluctant bad staff bad atmosphere but good food..
Yamani Restaurant offers an exceptional Mandi experience with tender, flavorful meat and perfectly seasoned rice. The inviting ambiance and friendly staff enhance the dining experience. Don t miss their Aareekh.
Great food quality, authentic atmosphere, and friendly staff.
We tried the lamb muhammar. It was good and flavourful. The staff are kind and generous. The atmosphere is family-friendly. Definitely going to try more stuff soon.
3 time. I come and tell him but extra onion and he but nothing
For and customer service was amazing. Seated and served us right away and the food speaks for itself. Must try if you re in the area.
Traveled all the way from brampton kist t9.find out coal In food.
Good place alhumdullilla
Had an event in the restaurant. The Lamb mandi was amazing, the rice was flavourful, the lamb was cooked to perfection, and they gave extra rice! Highly recommend.
Really good experience. The food is excellent. Food
Amazing service and phenomenal food. The staff are great people!
They serve great food and are very friendly and welcoming. Would reccomend to anyone looking to get good food at a good price in a great atmosphere! Parking: Great open parking lot , free with many spaces!
Very amazing food and great service
Whenever I call to make an order I dont get what Ive asked for!. Whoever is taking the orders on the phone does not pay attention to what ppl are ordering, guys we are paying MONEY here so provide better service.
The lamb it s so good
This place is a hidden gem in Kitchener Waterloo area. Their mandi is just perfect as how it needs to be . Very authentic and a must try
Peace and calm place to go with family and good food to eat.
Not a good choice for indian taste.
My husband especially took me to this place from Mississauga and it was worth it. Mandi was amazing. Servers were very nice and kind. We loved everything. Recommended. Food : 5/5
One of the best food Ive eaten
Expensive & tasteless food, unfortunately we were very disappointed.
This restaurant is amazing, offering delicious meals. However, I wish they would increase the quantity of rice served with the meat dishes for a more satisfying meal. Overall, still a great dining experience!
Very good place , rice was flavourfull, good prices
We had the chicken and lamb mandi with a salad on the side. It came with an abundant amount of rice, and we enjoyed the dish overall. I particularly liked the lamb, which was very tender. The chicken was a bit dry though. We got the salad just to have vegetables, but it wasnt very fresh. I dont have many points of comparison for the food, so its difficult to judge. The utensils provided were not very good, but I think its traditional to eat using hands rather than utensils. Service was decent - food came a bit slow, but the person working there helped us decide what to get and set up our table.
Absolutely phenomenal. Had Chicken Shawaya with 4 friends. Taste was superb. Highly recommended
Good chicken to be ordered, too much rice added compared to the meat if you order meat.
Food was kind of okay. The quantity of chicken is very very less compared to the price and the disposable plates they provide has very cheap quality. There is only one functional washroom which is women s and it had a very bad odour. After having food you wouldn t want to go there. Food
Amazing food and great atmosphere. The meat falls right off the bones.
Best mandi[ chicken and lamb]
The best Mandi in town. Its absolutely phenomenal. Ive tried Mandi around the world and this place is truly up there in its standards of excellence. The seating is spacious and has a charming traditional aesthetic with Yemeni floor sofas as well as wooden tables. The service is warm and friendly, although I would suggest picking up the pace at times (not a huge problem by any means). The owner is a blessed person with a deep love for Islam, and compassion for all customers. I appreciate that deeply. Dietary restrictions: Halal and hand slaughtered meat provided.
Best place for Mandhi. Never get disappointed. Their atmosphere and service are awesome. Also budget friendly. Strongly recommend for Mandhi lovers..
A great Yemeni restaurant
The food is superb
Tried lamb and chicken mandi. Both tasted pretty good, in fact, the best I have tried in Canada so far. Just 2 for service. Need to improve a lot
Went in with my family and ordered the Lamb and Chicken Mandi. The food was good. They did not seem to have water! or jugs or glasses. I was directed to the refrigerator buy sodas or bottled water. Surprised they did not consider tap water!
A great place for food in home test
Food is amazing, the restaurant is so beautiful, great for families.
Food quality wasnt good. Meat served on our order wasnt fresh, and the pieces were too hard.
We went to this rasturant to have a dinner first of all we stood for a long time No one to even say hi or welcome us .finally a person came from the kitchen and without saying hi or anything pointed to us the manue which was on the front where you walk in .the most unfriendly place I ever been .so we decide to walk away and eat somewhere else .not a ,good experience
I had chicken Mandi and Lamb Mandi. Only the Chicken skin taste was good in Chicken Mandi otherwise rice was ok. The Lamb Mandi was good, the meat was juicy and delicious and the rice was the same. It tastes much better with Ayran/Laban.
We had the Quarter Chicken Mandi. It is bang for buck. The rice was flavorful and the chicken was well seasoned.
If its about Mandi, onCoal is the place. Disclaimer: They do not have a modern ambience but if you care about authentic and delicious Mandi, then its a must to go. I have had the best of Lamb Mandi ever.
The food was really good. I Recommend the chicken shwaiya on rice. It was fall of the bone tender and very tasty. I liked the floor seating as well.
Great middle eastern food with a rustic aesthetic! We ordered the lamb mandi and the roasted half chicken - incredibly tender and flavourful with large portion sizes. Coming back here for sure!
Great restaurant with nice ambiance. The food tastes authentic and delicious, enjoyed the bbq mandi and mutabbaq. Love that they also offer a little prayer nook. Keep up the great cooking!
This the best Mandi experience for me in Canada. The taste is authentic, environment is authentic and hospitality is authentic as well.
It is my goto place for lunch. I always get the Chicken Mandi, the chicken is very soft and juicy and the sauces are delicious too. It s also very fairly priced and would recommend for all chicken lovers who are health conscious. Kid-friendliness: Good place for family.
Order two lamb mandi for 1 adult and 1 kid It was not enough total lamb with bone less than 400grams for two meals Food
Great envirinent
Nice food
Great place to eat...Ma Shaa Allah very flavourful lamb a must try! Its mandi style food so get ready to eat with hands and if you prefer they have 2 majlis style seating booths as well that is if you are comfortable with sitting on the floor with your whole family. Lots of free parking outside as well. A bonus is that they have a separate prayer area as well.
Amazing food. Must try!
Great food abd beautiful restaurant
Chicken Mandi is cooked really well and very good smoky flavor
The food is too good! 10/10 on food taste and cooked to perfection. Highly recommended. The only thing which they should change is the spoons and forks, they give you plastic spoons and forks which are not suitable for their cuisine. Food
Almost tried everything over there in my 5 visits Food is really good and portion is good as well. Always service is a bit slow, but once you start eating, you will forget everything thing Food 10/10 pakistani Food 06/10 arabic Service 06/10 Ambiance 08/10 I can go again
We opted for the charcoal-grilled chicken, which proved to be excellent. However, the honey-glazed meat fell short of expectations, as the honey itself had a syrupy consistency. While the motabaq was satisfactory, I do not intend to reorder it in the future. My preference for subsequent visits will be exclusively for the chicken dish.
Nice people, food was okay. Lamb was delicious but the chicken had an almost tuna-y texture? Not fun to eat.
Great middle eastern restaurant. Huge amount and original flavour. Thank you Dietary restrictions: Halal Food : 5/5 |
Good
The food tastes amazing!!
why does this place close so early????
Their chicken Mandi was pretty good. Had quite a bit of flavor to it and their service was brilliant. My first experience here was positive.
Food is delicious and definitely the best Mandi you get in tri-city. But if you are looking for a dine-in experience it s not that great. Service was not that good.
Parking: Authentic Mandi Food
Al-Mandi has what it needs
Very delicious food at a reasonable price
Amazing food. Got the Lamb Mandi and the 1/2 a chicken. Best Mandi eaten yet
The taste is really great. You get the same tenderness of Mandi Chicken in all the three options i.e. Smoked, Barbeque and Plain. However, the prices are a little different. All the 3 options are available with the same Mandi Rice option. We took half chicken which was sufficient for the two of us. However, for people with larger appetites, they might want to go for more. The two accompanying dressing sauces are spicy and tangy. We coupled that with an Ayraan drink which is similar to Indian buttermilk. You have other options too. There is sufficient seating and options to sit with friends and family on cushions on the floor and eat in a traditional Islamic/Muslim way. It goes without saying that its Halal. They provide a use and throw table cover for dine in which is not a very fancy way to eat. This was our second visit and its a decent place to try a simple, tasty meal with friends and family.
I recently had a dinner at on Coal at restaurant, and I must say, the food was absolutely yummy. Every dish we ordered was bursting with flavor and made with the utmost care. The service was good and the staff was welcoming.
I m very disappointed in this place after reading the reviews! We paid $115 with tip for the double lamb and chicken meal. We ordered our food and found a place to sit - it was not busy. The worker was not inviting, barely cracked a smile when ordering. After we sat down he came over to place the plastic over the table cloth and just draped it over our drinks until we started moving things weird. But okay it s more about the food .Food was ready very quickly and served on a large round plate with a bed of rice. No plates are offered just plastic cutlery. The chicken was not crispy, more jelly like but inside was decent, not dry. The lamb was ok, not stinky like some places. There are no sides included, no salad etc. The man who served us at the counter stared at our table the entire time we ate. We were given 4 sauces, two hot and two tahini in mini take out containers. When my husband asked for more tahini sauce the same man said no. No it takes a long time to make it - meanwhile there is a tray of them behind him - he offers hot sauce (which we have enough of) again he told my husband no! I m sorry we just spent over $100 on one plate of food and you say no to extra sauce? My husband even offered to pay, again a no. This put a bad taste in our mouth and we just wanted to pack our meal and leave. I went to the counter to get a take out container and it was at that moment I saw the same man packing a take-away meal and giving this customer 4 tahini containers .he saw me watching him and then asked me, you want white sauce? I said yes! He just pointed at the tray and shrugged his shoulders. I shrugged mine. He finally gave me an extra sauce and we got out of there. I felt disrespected from the moment we entered. I am a white Muslim woman and my husband is a non-white Muslim. We both felt as though we should not be there, that the employee did not want us there, almost how dare we enter their restaurant. It was shocking to me. We were so excited to try this new location as we seek out Halal restaurants and are very choosy with who we give our money to. It really makes me sad, with all the chaos going on in the world right now, this type of resentment coming from a restaurant should not be happening. Will never return
Great food! Sometimes a little inconsistent but its almost always amazing. The Lamb Muhammar and Mandi are my favorites here.
The chicken mandi I ordered was very tasty.
Authentic Yemeni Mandi with great quality...
Very delicious juicy soft lamb and chicken mandi .. stumbled upon it today but were pleasantly surprised . A great addition to the food space in Waterloo,
Amazing food! We came from Toronto to run an errand and came by this place, the chicken was so soft and flavourful, as was the rice! Good portion! The guy behind the counter recommended we try the chicken shawwaya and he was spot on!
The food and service are too good. Fair price.
We have ordered takeout here twice now and each meal was delicious. We ordered the chicken mandi and lamb meal last week and it was incredible. When I picked up my food, I was recommended to try the Shawwa Ya next time. I tried it yesterday and it is the best chicken I have ever had in my life. It is so flavourful and the servings are plentiful. We re already looking forward to the next meal!
Ended up there very randomly as my wife was googling Murtabak... decided to have lunch as the aromatic smell of mandi at the restaurant was intoxicating.. We ordered Chicken and Lamb Mandi and it was one of the best things I have eaten in Canada in my 10 or so years. The Lamb was so tender it was falling off the bone and the rice was very well flavoured. The red and White Sauces(Chutney) complimented to food really well. Definitely a place I will be taking an out of towner. Special shout out to Abu Bakar who took great care of us.
Best mandi in canada
The price is to high more than other Mandi Restaurants like munasabah and Mandi afandi in Mississauga
Amazing people, good service, and good food
Best place to enjoy chicken, lamb roasted or BBQ. Parking: Huge parking lot available. Food : 5/5 |
The food tasted pretty average to me. The rice was lacking flavour and i personally didnt like the food.
I was visiting from NY, and looking for some authentic Middle Eastern food. The food was delicious, meat fell of the bone, everything was hot and fresh, brought to the table quick. The server and owner were very kind and generous, definitely a must try! Will be back the next time I visit.
i have had a great time with my friends celebrating its a nice traditional yemeni s restaurant and it has the best mendi i have ever eaten would really recommend this place for people who want to try new types of food, its a really amazing you should try the food
The Meat was excellent. We had Mandi and Roasted Lamb and both were delicious. Definitely I will go back again.
Nice spot for mandhi
I visited On Coal restaurant with my friend in Waterloo last week, we ordered Lamb Mandi, Chicken Mandi & Maasoub. If we are talking about this type of food in the area it s really consider as one of the best, the good was very good, the service and the staff were fantastic, the general atmosphere was excellent. I m strongly recommend On Coal Halal Restaurant.
The food is good but poor service even there are no table spoons for rice.
